Welcome Welcome! I love this time of year; the green shoots of spring are starting to emerge at last after the cold winter and the shops are filled with Easter Eggs. The days are longer and warmer, with so much more time to go out and play. We have ‘Top Things To Do Over The Easter Holidays’ on page 20. See the centre pull out for great offers with Blackgang Chine and Robin Hill Country Park and we have two great offers from JR Zone page 34 and the Shipwreck Centre page 34. See the competition on page 35 to win a family day out in Southsea with Hovertravel and Blue Reef. From this summer The Rainbow Directory will have a new name, it will be called The Family Directory. The directory and the website will stay the same; just Rainbow will change to Family. Also from this spring you will be able to sign up for the FREE Rainbow Directory e-newsletter, to receive the latest news on shows, arts, events, holiday clubs, what’s on and special offers. Simply click on the newsletter button on our home page and we will do the rest. Go to www.therainbowdirectory.co.uk This spring you can also subscribe to The Rainbow Directory, and each directory will be delivered to your door, never will you miss your copy, this is good present for any new Mum or Dad or if you have a holiday home we can send to your main home and you can book up activities before you get to the island. After the Big Day Out last autumn, a father I met asked if it was possible to have a calendar on our website so he could find out what was on that week-end or on over the holidays. Take a look at the ‘What’s On’ page. You will find a calendar of clubs, classes, events and lots more. All available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an event please email it to us on info@therainbowdirectory.co.uk and we will add the event for free. Whenever you use the directory, please mention you saw the advert in The Rainbow Directory. If a friend, family members or you know someone moving to the island that would like a copy of their own please just call and we will pop one in the post to them.
If you would like your advert to be seen in the next edition of The Rainbow Directory Please call for an information pack. If you don’t tell families about your school, club, group or services they will not know about you. If you want more business then tell parents what you have to offer. Our advertising costs, starting from as little as £20, really does offer you value for money. Our directories are produced 3 times a years and we print 20,000 copies each time. Have a good spring.

News and Updates The Ellen MacArthur Trust The Ellen MacArthur Trust is a charity based on the IOW working with young people between 8 and 24, helping to rebuild their confidence after treatment for cancer and leukaemia. Established in 2003 by world-renowned yachtswoman and IOW resident Dame Ellen MacArthur, the Trust now welcomes young people from hospitals all over the country to participate in short sailing trips, initially around the IOW. These young people have often spent long periods of their childhood in hospital, missing out on school and isolated from their peer group. The trips give them a chance to regain their independence and take control of their lives again, meeting others who understand what they’ve been through. We aim to rebuild the confidence lost during treatment, and simply have fun, with sailing being the perfect catalyst. The young people sleep and eat on board, and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of crew life, from helming the yacht, to washing up, with the emphasis on teamwork. The sailing is mixed with shore-based activities and the Trust is supported by local businesses and organizations including UKSA, Liz Earle, Plaza Ice Creams, Yarmouth Lifeboat Red Funnel and Solent Yacht Club, helping to make sure all the young people have a great time. They can then return each year, to sailing regattas, a residential dinghy week in Essex, or for longer cruising.

It was a sight that would have made Augutus Gloop, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory explode with excitement. Children and staff at Mayville High School in Southsea dug deep in their pockets, not that they needed much tempting, for a Haiti Cake Sale, which raised £260 for the Earthquake Appeal. Later at lunchtime pupils and staff emptied the change from their lunch money, and any loose pennies into a Haiti fundraising bucket. The sum total of the day came to a staggering £408.19 which will now be sent to help people in the earthquake zone.

Kumon is a leading education provider which offers maths and English programmes for children of all ages and abilities. At the Cowes and Sandown study centres, we can help your child to excel in these subjects, simultaneously boosting their confidence in many areas of life. The Kumon method of learning focuses on each child as an individual, providing them with the study skills they will need both at school and beyond. Whether your child struggles or excels, a Kumon programme can be tailored to their needs, and by regular study and repetition they will build confidence, accuracy, concentration and independence in learning. Students attend their local Kumon centre every week for around half an hour, and have worksheets to take away so they can keep up with their studies at home. Through this experience of regular study and support, strong foundations are built and your child will feel able to succeed by themselves. Kumon was established over 25 years ago in the UK, and has been growing steadily for 12 years on the Isle of Wight. To find out more about how our maths and English programmes can help your child;
Do you have a child who has any of the following difficulties?
• Unclear speech, .g. says “gog” instead of”dog”, has a lisp on their ‘s’, can’t say words beginning with ‘sh’ or ‘ch’, misses the ends of words, can’t pronounce ‘f’, ‘s’, or blends.
• Not producing enough words for their age. • Have auditory memory difficulties. • Have difficulties with understanding what is being said to them. Often parents will say their child understands everything but it is amazing how many clues we give them when we speak e.g. pointing , gestures , eye-pointing/ gazing, routines and even tone of voice. • Stammering. • Does your child have reading and/or writing difficulties?
This is an area that we are able to assess and assist in now as my assistant has vast experience in this field.

Independent Schools
Independent Schools Why Choose an Independent School? Independent schools offer a quality education that incorporates small classes and more individual attention. While specific independent schools’ missions vary, parents can expect a wide array of offerings within the academic, arts, and athletic areas at any independent school.Parents can choose from co education or single sex education and different boarding options offer flexibility for working parents and home-from-home comforts for their children. To help with costs many schools offer some form of financial assistance in the form of scholarships and bursaries. Other charities and trusts may sometimes be able to help, too. As a parent, you are in the fortunate position of having a good range of independent school choices available to you on and off the Island. We have independent schools on the island and many children also travel across the Solent each day to school. This advantage brings with it the responsibility of evaluating which school will be the right match for your child to ensure your child’s maximum growth and instill a life-long love of learning. A good website that offers free and impartial advice on all aspects of independent education across the UK. is www.isc.co.uk
Mayville High School: Closer Than You Think There is a fast growing community of children travelling from the Isle of Wight to Mayville High School, in Southsea. Word is getting around on the island that Mayville, an independent school with small class sizes, family feel and caring ethos gets results, because children are happy. Sue Curtis’s daughter Georgina started in Year 6 last September. “Georgina has blossomed. The care is excellent; I wish I’d taken the step ages ago.” Initially she was worried about the journey from the island, but points out her daughter arrives in school on the mainland before she gets to work on the island. Georgina says, “The journey is exciting, and different, and I really like school we get lots of opportunity. I’m not nervous to ask for help”. Susan Dominguez whose son George also commutes says, “It’s great for parents to know there are options for educating their children beyond the island. I like the fact boys and girls are taught separately. George is enthusiastic about school and takes so much pride in his work.” George says “At first I was scared of the journey but my friends are on the hovercraft and its fun”.
As pupils move through the year groups at Mayville one thing remains constant, teaching groups and class sizes remain small. Head teacher Martin Castle says, “Teachers here can see whether a pupil needs support or encouragement, extension or refocusing in a glance. This is the key for individual progress.” Mayville’s fleet of minibuses pick up and drop off at the hovercraft. The school offers a varied curriculum and plenty of opportunity for sport. So if you’re thinking of taking the first steps from the island to the mainland for your child’s education, we’d love to show you that we really are just on your doorstep. (See ad inside front cover)

Priory School Priory School is an Independent Co-Educational Day School for boys and girls aged 5 to 16. A Sixth Form opens in 2010 for 16-18 year olds. This will offer a complete education from 5 to 18 ensuring no disruption to your children’s education. It is run with a Christian ethos, where each child is considered separately, for his or her talents. We have high academic standards but also believe that the arts, including drama, music and dance, and team sports for both Junior & Senior pupils are a vital part of an overall education. Our 2009 GCSE results proved that we care for all children as all candidates whether academic or vocational in ability went on to the colleges or careers of their choice. This has been confirmed by early 2010 GCSE modules taken in Science & Maths where the A*/A pass rate in November 2009 was 55%. We will of course be offering from Autumn 2010 full continuity of academic studies when our Sixth Form opens. We believe in clear rules, clear procedures and to ensure attention to each child maintain a strict policy of having a MAXIMUM class size of 16 pupils. The school is divided into Junior & Senior Schools, with a Head of each school. We have already appointed a Sixth Form tutor for 2010.The administrative staff comprise Principal, School Administrator and Bursar. The Principal Edmund Matyjaszek, who acquired the school in March 2009 at the invitation of the founder, is an Oxford graduate who trained in law, and who was also for years a Director & Trustee of the Poetry Society. His family has been in teaching for generations. The aim of Priory School is to offer a first-class education at an affordable cost in a well structured and clearly run environment to become the school of choice on the Isle of Wight. For all who visit Priory School , it is the friendly and family atmosphere that stands out. We feel the 18% increase in pupil intake this Autumn term speaks for itself. The Rainbow Directory 13

Independent Schools Portsmouth High School For over 125 years, Portsmouth High School has been delivering excellence in girls’ education. Located in the heart of Southsea, just a short walk from the Hover Terminal the school provides a rich and full curriculum for girls from Nursery through to Sixth Form.Founded in 1882 by the Girls’ Day School Trust - the largest and most consistently successful family of independent schools in the UK - the School has established an outstanding reputation for academic excellence. Indeed, the recent ISI report confirms that the school ‘successfully creates a community of learning committed to academic excellence, enabling girls to build on their strengths and develop their own voice’. The report, following the ISI inspection in October 2009, which included an inspection of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) also praised the ‘outstanding quality of pastoral care’, the ‘excellent relationships between staff and pupils’ and the ‘outstanding provision’ for the needs of the children in the EYFS which sets a firm foundation for future learning. So Portsmouth High School really does offer the very best start for your child. Those precious first days at school, however, are just the first chapter. We believe school days should be happy days and we hope throughout their Junior, Senior and Sixth Form years girls will enjoy a wealth of opportunities and experiences. When people visit Portsmouth High School they are struck by a sense that this is how a school should be. Contact us on 023 9282 6714 or visit www.portsmouthhigh.co.uk to find out the answer to the question; “Where’s the best school for my daughter?” Portsmouth High School will be holding an Open Mornings on Tuesday 2nd March and Thursday 20th May between 9:15am and 11:15am

Haylands Puddleducks Pre-School Puddleducks Pre-school is part of Haylands Primary School extended schools services. We have places for children aged from 2 years 10 months to school age. We are Ofsted registered and work to the Early Years Foundation Stage framework to provide high quality care and education using both indoors and outdoors for children to explore and experience. All of our staff are qualified in childcare and we pride ourselves on having a high ratio of adults to children. We are open MonFri, 9am to 3pm term time. We believe that parents/carers are children’s first educators so we work in close partnership with parents and carers to help children learn and develop and promote equality and diversity. Together we can plan a learning journey for your child building on what they already know, their current interests and what they can already do. Please feel free to contact us to arrange an appointment to have a look around and discuss any requirements or ask any questions regarding child care at Haylands Puddleducks Pre-school. YMCA Winchester House YMCA Isle of Wight are set to open a brand new 56 place nursery at Winchester House this Spring. The nursery will take children aged 6 weeks to 5 years giving locals a reliable childcare option with a difference. YMCA Nurseries are known for their unique ethos which involves a play based learning approach whist making the most of the 3 large play rooms and self contained outdoor play area. The day-to-day programme will include trips to the beach, visiting local attractions and a healthy breakfast, mid-morning snack, a hot lunch and afternoon tea. For more information contact info@ymca-fg.org or 01983 862441 (See ad page 16).
Tops Day Nurseries are pleased to have opened a new pre-school room in the IOW College site nursery, as more parents are signing up for the ‘flexible’ childcare. The Blue room, which was opened in the new year for the children aged over 2 and a half, has a role play area and a fully resourced craft area and the children’s independence is growing as they feel grown up in their own new space and as they learn to do more for themselves away from the little ones, such as serve their own lunches! Nursery Manager Natalie Sanders says: “The older children feel very happy and grown up in their own room now and are better behaved too. By separating the older children for activities it has enabled us to provide the smaller babies with their own quieter environment in which to settle and the 2 year olds have more room to move about and explore. It’s fantastic that new children are joining us so that these improvements can be made.” The Tops Day Nursery has also received a grant to improve the large garden area and is making plans for a new safety surface and climbing frames - Just some of the extra improvements underway. The nursery, formerly Playstation, which was set for closure last July has been steadily growing under the new management of Tops Day Nurseries and as more parents hear about the flexible booking system which allows parents to book to the quarter of an hour as opposed to long sessions which aren’t always necessary. There is also a play club for older children in the school holidays and breakfast clubs and trips! There are 11 Tops Day nurseries in total across Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire.

Childcare & Pregnancy
Childcare & Pregnancy
HELP is at hand at HOME by Fran Cooper of Freedom Childcare When people talk about having a nanny I used to conjure up an image of a lady in a white starched blouse that has a very intimidating presence and who completely takes over from my input as a mother in the bringing up of my children. Eight years of running Freedom Childcare and placing nannies with hundreds of families has reformed my early perceptions. Families are unique and can have specific requirement regarding discipline, health, lifestyle and diet. A nanny has to be diverse and unique to be able to fit well within a family unit. The benefits of using a nanny as your main childcare provision or to help with some of your childcare requirements are as follows:
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
• •
Flexibility of working hours, increase and decrease hours to suit needs, weekends evenings. Unusual working patterns: changing days from 1 week to the next Overnight requirements Continuity Parent lead prescriptive care Close personal relationships built between Nanny & parents & Nanny & children Cost effective, more so for multiple children Transportation – nanny comes to you, school runs. Children in their own surroundings Help with child related domestic chores Other general domestic help Sickness cover - no exclusion policies School closure day cover Support with organising daily activities, clubs etc Allows more of the Parents time with the children to be quality time as other chores can be worked into nannies routine-ie packed lunches food preparation etc Short term help for new parent / new babies to help with routines and SLEEP!! Ability for parents to attend weekend event/ work commitments
The spectrum of care is vast but some of the main categories are: Trainee Nanny - Mothers Help - Sole Charge Nanny - Holiday Nanny
Help with Costs Nannies can now be registered with OFSTED!!This means families can claim up to 80% of their costs back using Tax Credits and Salary Sacrifice vouchers. These benefits can be used by families earning up to £55,000 a year!!!! Fran’s Story Due to a change in personal circumstances I have personally just employed a nanny to help me with my children and my life has been transformed!!! I return home from work in the evenings to a tidy house with two children who have done their homework, had their dinner, had some form of exercise: clubs, bike rides etc, changed out of their school uniforms which are ready for the next day, dogs fed, rabbits fed, dishwasher emptied, and some days even supper ready for me!!! Having a nanny has changed the time I spend with my children from a facilitator into a mother. We now have more time to sit and talk, play games, read and generally have much more quality time together as a family. My children have developed a close personal bond with our nanny, she has enhanced all our lives. It also means I am more focused when I’m at work, which in turn brings its own benefits.
If you have any questions on recruiting a nanny or childcare in general please call our free phone help line on 08000 851444

What is private fostering? Private fostering refers to when a private arrangement is made for a child under the age of 16 (or 18 if they are disabled) to be cared for by someone other than a parent or close relative (for example extended family, friends or other non-relatives) with the intention that it should last for 28 days or more. This does not include children who are being looked after by the local authority. Under the Children’s Act ‘close relative’ is defined as grandparent, brother, sister, uncle, aunt or step-parent. Private fostering arrangements could include any number of different situations such as: • Children sent to the Isle of Wight for education or health care by birth parents from overseas; • Children living with a friend’s family as a result of parental separation, divorce or difficulties at home; • Teenagers living with the family of a boyfriend or girlfriend. What must I do? If you think you could be involved in any kind of private fostering arrangement you must notify us immediately by contacting the referral and assessment team on 525790. We can then give you further information and advice. Under the new laws, failure to notify us is an offence. What will the council do? Knowing where your child is will help us make sure that he or she is being well looked after. We will initially undertake an assessment of the arrangement and ensure that the carer is suitable to look after your child and that the child(ren) are living in a safe, secure environment. We will make regular visits to see the child(ren) and will give help and advice when it is needed. (See advert above).

Moving Day by Paul Wheeler Solicitor
The Utility Warehouse provides over 300,000 customers throughout the UK with substantial savings on a wide range of utility services including home phone, mobile, broadband, gas and electricity. They provide their members with great value, great savings and the best possible customer service. Perhaps it’s not surprising that in a recent survey, over 94% of Utility Warehouse customers said they would recommend them to a friend. You may not have heard of the Utility Warehouse Discount Club before, as they do not advertise. Instead, they rely on satisfied customers letting their friends and family know about the great value services they deliver. The Utility Warehouse are very different to other suppliers. They don’t have any high street shops and their systems are very efficient. And because (unlike their competitors) they don’t waste money on expensive advertising campaigns on TV or in the National Press, they can afford to charge their customers less than they do for the same services.
Boxes and bags holdalls and packs line up alongside the door; glasses and plates footballs and skates are safely stacked up in their store; your home is compressed, your family are dressed and ready to head on their way. A lorry pulls by Removers they say: ‘Hi’ as they bear in their stride your possessions. “Cup of tea…mind your back…watch the gap…trapped your fingers?” (This is no place for workshy or whingers).

Island Families
Photography Ruth, Graham, Emily, Rosalind Why do you like living in Ryde?
Jamie, Fran, Joseph, Bethan and Harvey the Springer Spaniel
We like to live in easy reach of the mainland. We like to walk to the library and the shops. We love the sea front as it is super for small children.
Favourite Local Park
We like the Puckpool to boating lake area of Ryde. In winter, it’s a place to ride our bikes and play on the sandy slidey bits. In summer there’s the gently sloping beach and paddling pool.
Favourite Local Club / Class
Gillian Cartwright’s ballet lessons are very popular with my girls. Rosalind also loves the intimate classes at Jane McGregor’s swimming academy.
Favourite Child - Friendly Restaurant
Pizza Express were very tolerant and had children’s books and colouring in to do. Children sized food too. And they get a hat!
Favourite Place on the Island
Robin Hill is the girls’ ultimate favourite. We buy season tickets and the very mention of the place will bring forth squeals of delight.
Best Children’s Book
The most philosophical Gruffalo style book is the Snail and the Whale. Tiddler, Room on the Broom and Tabby McTat are firm favourites too.
Favourite Beach
We love Ventnor beach. We look for jewels (polished glass) in the stones and the big waves look fantastic. Good ice cream/ coffee too.
Why do you like living in Sandown?
There’s lots for the kids to do with the parks, The Heights, IW Zoo, Dinosaur Museum and the beach only a few minutes away. We love being so close to the sea.
Favourite Local Park
The Rainbow Park has great play equipment, room to play football and we can feed the ducks as well.
Favourite Local Club / Class
Bethan loves going to Caterpillar Music as she gets to sing, dance and play instruments. She is able to go twice a week, once at nursery and again with Mummy. We have made some great friends at the class as well, it’s a great way to meet people.
Favourite Child – Friendly Restaurant The White Hart at Havenstreet.
Favourite Place on the Island
It has to be Blackgang Chine, its always the first choice for a day out. We always have a great time, and 2 very tired children by the end of the day!
Best Children’s Book
Any Hairy Maclary book. Great rhyming stories about the adventures of a dog and his group of friends.
Favourite beach.
Yaverland beach has everything you could need and is often quieter than Sandown.
