Become Nature Detectives Children discovering nature at their own pace Naturezones is run at a ten acre site consisting of wildflower meadows and native woodland at Blackwater. It is a great venue for children to become Nature Detectives. The Wildlife Education Centre was set up by Angela Hewitt and her husband three years ago with the help of Heritage Lottery funding. Numerous activities include: Tuesday Holiday Club, for 6 – 12 year olds. This includes Hide building, treasure hunts, art and craft. They offer Birthday Parties during the school holidays which include a healthy eating picnic and nature discovery activities - the parents provide the birthday cake. Parents can either stay and join in the fun or leave them in capable hands for two and a half hours. Naturezones latest project is The Green Girls Saturday Club – giving nature a helping hand. This club is for 8 – 12 year olds and is held the last Saturday of every month. The Green Girls will take part in Forest School type activities, nature investigation, help with the Meadow Makers project and even the odd excursion to other nature reserves on the Island. Naturezones supports the national curriculum in natural sciences (particularly in the understanding of wildlife habitats), geography, art and craft and social skills in all of its activities. As well as offering one free school visit for up to 30 children until July 2011. They also support the Diploma course for higher education students with work experience and citizenship skills. There is something for parents too, with their volunteer programme and workshops. We also apologise for the inconvenience caused by publishing the wrong email address in the Top 10 Things to do in the Easter Issue the website address is www.naturezones.org.uk see advert page 22

What’s on this summer page 24

One of our winners of the Family Day Out Competition in the spring issue was Heather Walker “Today mum and dad took my brothers and I, to the Blue Reef in Southsea. I was lucky enough to win this family ticket on the Hover to Blue Reef with The Rainbow Directory. It was a really hot day, when we got there we saw stingrays, otters, lizards and more. I liked the seahorses and nemo fish best, mum loved the sharks, shark talk and the shark pods where she could see the babies moving in them, that was something we had never seen before. The boys liked the otters and dad the stingrays. Afterwards as it was so hot we played in the water park and sand area there, we had our tea from the cafe and looked at the terrapins in the outside area. We all had a great day, many thanks The Rainbow Directory”. From Heather Walker age 7.

For the Summer competition see page 39 Win Family Tickets to The Owl & Monkey Haven and The Jay Miller Circus. Time to have fun this summer.

Activities Rhythm Time

Family cooking at its simplest with Anna ‘Easy Oven-baked Summer Risotto’

Rhythm Time provides three fun music courses which are specifically written for different age groups, babies, toddlers and preschool age children. If your child has benefited from funded sessions and you want to know more then please contact us. We run private sessions in Newport, Binstead, and Gurnard.

Risotto is a great slow-release energy-provider as well as a fantastic way to hide vitamin-rich vegetables from picky eaters. Even my fussy 4-year old will happily munch her way through the fresh asparagus, celery and onion in this easy supper dish for all the family. The trick of course is to chop the veg sufficiently finely. The easiest way to do this is with The Pampered Chef’s Food Chopper. An essential bit of kitchen kit, it can blitz anything (including chicken) in a few seconds, making food preparation incredibly quick and easy.

The team provide a variety of instruments for children to experience, sessions are fantastic for confidence, social skills, speech, memory, singing and general wellbeing.

Ingredients for family of 4 (ie: 2 adults and 2 children)

Birthday parties are available as well see advert page 6.

Tiny Talk

l

TinyTalk Isle of Wight was launched in 2007. Emily Pritchard, who was brought up on the Island, took over the franchise in January. Emily is Mum to 4 year old Daisy and 2 year old Poppy. Having read about the benefits of baby signing, Emily took 6 week old Daisy to her local class in Nottingham. Having enjoyed the class immensely, she soon realised its potential for meaningful communication between her and her baby.

l

l

From that day, she had an ambition to run her own classes and since returning back to the Island last year she was thrilled to have the opportunity to take over the running of TinyTalk Isle of Wight, and join the growing team of TinyTalk teachers around the Globe. TinyTalk Baby Signing gives pre-verbal babies and children the opportunity to communicate long before they can talk! Signs are learnt using simple nursery rhymes and songs and is a fantastic way of being able to tune in to your baby’s world! “Seeing my youngest tell me she wants milk or has seen a bird or flower is just amazing!” Classes held in Cowes, Newport and Ryde. See advert page 5.

Isle of Hula

Isle of Hula is an up and coming contemporary expressive arts business. Infused with a circus feel and originality spreading colour and creativity. They offer a wide range of services performance, heath, fitness and birthday parties through creating and most of all sharing.

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped finely 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 stick celery, finely sliced 100g asparagus, chopped, tips reserved

l l l l l

200g Carnaroli or Arborio risotto rice 200g fresh or frozen peas 25g unsalted butter 75g Parmigiano Reggiano, freshly grated 700ml stock (or for adult eaters, 600 ml stock, 100 ml vermouth / white wine)

Pre-heat oven to 180C Chop all the vegetables as small as possible, reserving the asparagus tips. l Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and gently soften the onion and garlic without letting it brown (about 5 minutes). l Then, along with the chopped asparagus, celery, rice and stock, tip into a high-sided 1 litre baking dish (such as the stoneware Mini-Baker pictured). Give everything a good stir and pop in the oven for 20 minutes. l Stir risotto, adding more stock if necessary, then return to oven for a further 15-20 minutes or until the rice is ‘al dente’. l l

Meanwhile, steam or boil the peas and asparagus tips in a small saucepan. l Remove risotto from oven. Stir butter, peas and parmesan through and top with asparagus tips. l

l

Serve hot.

Isle of Hula have worked with the, Isle of Wight Council, Social Services, Sandown Carnival and Extended school services, right through to international dance events. Isle of Hula school projects is a great way for the children to interact with one another, making new friends in a fun and energetic environment, all whilst getting fit!!! This could also start giving children/teens a new positive incentive for children/teenagers both girls and boys to experience the joy of hula hoop classes, workshops and clubs. See advert page 4.

Kumon Maths and English:

Has your child got special educational needs not being met?

With the changes to education on the Isle of Wight, it’s time to support your child’s learning. And with a Kumon Free Trial round the corner, what could be a better way?

Recently Bev Jessup has been very busy doing assessments for children whose parents are asking for their child to be statemented. A Statement of Special Educational Needs is a legal document issued by the Local Authority (LA). It sets out a child’s special educational needs and identifies how these needs can be met with appropriate provision.

Free Trial 21 August - 20 October

Leading supplementary education provider Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes tailored to each child’s age and ability. Through working at their own pace every day, children are given not only a strong grounding in maths and English, but fundamental learning skills such as accuracy, time management, concentration and independence in study. Enrol your child at the Kumon study centre at Sandown or Cowes between 21 August and 20 October 2010 to take advantage of our Free Trial and see how the Kumon method can benefit your child. Your first two weeks will be free of charge, but to make a lasting difference your child will need to make a long term commitment to the programme.

With the help of the school’s SENCO, your child’s needs should be met within: School Action ~ if this doesn’t work then, School Action Plus ~ IEPs should be set by the school with support from outside agencies and reviewed termly.

For further information or to enrol, call ex Sandown High School mathematics teacher

If your child is still not progressing, then you need to ask the LA to do an Statutory Assessment. If you would like your child’s speech and language needs to be assessed, to provide evidence for your application for a statement, contact Bev Jessup for more details.

Independent Schools

Independent Schools New Sixth Form opening at Priory School Priory School is an Independent Co-Educational Day School for boys and girls aged 5 to 16. A Sixth Form opens in 2010 for 16-18 year olds. This will offer a complete education from 5 to 18. It is run with a Christian ethos, which our new crest above, that accompanies a new uniform in black and gold for September 2010, is designed to highlight, where each child is considered separately, for his or her talents. We have high academic standards but also believe that the arts, including drama, music and visual arts, and team sports for both Junior & Senior pupils, are a vital part of an overall education. In 2009 all the GCSE candidates, whether academic or vocational in ability, went on to the colleges or careers of their choice. This has been confirmed by 2010 GCSE modules taken in Science & Maths from November to March where the A*/A pass rate in Higher papers taken was 56%. All GCSE results to date can be found on the website. We believe in clear rules, clear procedures and to ensure attention to each child maintain a strict policy of having a MAXIMUM class size of 16 pupils. The school is divided into Junior & Senior Schools, with a Head of each school. Our Sixth Form with its new Head opens in September 2010 with current 5th Formers staying on.The administrative staff comprise Principal, School Administrator and Bursar. The Principal Edmund Matyjaszek, who acquired the school in March 2009 at the invitation of the founder, is an Oxford graduate who trained in law, and who was also for years a Director & Trustee of the Poetry Society. His family has been in teaching for generations. The aim of Priory School is to offer a first-class education at an affordable cost in a well structured and clearly run environment to become the school of choice on the Isle of Wight. For all who visit Priory School, it is the friendly and family atmosphere that stands out, and we recommend that any prospective pupil or parent comes and sees the school to assess for themselves. See advert page 12.

The young and the elderly share the Spirit of Dunkirk at Mayville High School It was to commemorate the anniversary of the D Day landings, and in a scene that could have been any post was street party pupils from Mayville High School listened to first hand stories of war time Britain. A group of elderly people, some still very sprightly at 92 years of age came to Mayville High School and shared afternoon tea in the playground to the strains of Vera Lynn. Beryl Coplend who won’t reveal her age only that she is over 21, told pupils how everyone gathered in Portsmouth’s Guildhall Square at the end of the war, as beer flowed from every barrel at every pub in the city. She said, “It’s lovely to have young people with us”. Year 6, Lucy Shirley said, “It’s a good way to learn, much better than sitting in a lesson”. 92 year old Desiree Laxton, remembers working in a NAAFI in Bristol when the D- Day landings were taking place. She said, “We closed up and danced all over the downs and into the city”. Laura Baggott of Age Concern in Portsmouth said, “As the years progress people do forget what happened in the war, but children are actively interested in what life was like then. Events like this are wonderful”. And Deputy Head teacher of the Junior school Daren King, who organised the afternoon said “This is all about building stronger relationships in the community. Also from a teaching point of view this is first hand history learning from those who were there rather than a book, or the internet.” Tea and cakes over, Mayville’s Pre-Prep, and Junior choirs sang to those who had brought their stories to share. It was Mayville’s chance to commemorate the D-Day landings, and as young met old all returned home a little wiser, and for the pupils at Mayville they had a greater understanding of what people in Portsmouth had to endure in the war. Portsmouth High School - Junior and Senior Departments Just a short walk from the Southsea Hovercraft Terminal, lies Dovercourt, the Junior School for Portsmouth High School. The School has educated generations of girls in its 128 year history and is set in a delightful secret garden, complete with its own temple! Girls are educated here from the ages of 3 to 11, when they transfer to the Senior School, which is just at the end of the road. The school recognises that each pupil has her own dreams and enables every girl to reach her goals and achieve her aspirations. Pupils are encouraged to develop a love of learning and the School celebrates each individual’s achievements, no matter how big or small. With a host of activities beyond the classroom, including a comprehensive after schools activities scheme and an ambitious Sixth Form enrichment programme, there is something for everyone. Throughout their schooling, girls are taught in small classes and emphasis is placed upon helping them to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge that they will need to be successful in the rapidly changing world of the twenty first century. When people visit Portsmouth High School they are struck by a sense that this is how a school should be. Why not visit for yourself see advert page 12

A view to be envied

by Henry Phillips, Headmaster of Hordle Walhampton All heads will tell you of the requirement to see ‘the bigger picture’ and in that, I believe, the headmaster’s view at Hordle Walhampton is second to none. This, you may feel is possibly a little presumptuous since by their nature every head teacher is loyal, enthusiastic and proud of their school, but as I sit here in my study, I defy all-comers to have a better view. Directly in front of me acres of open lawns are gently punctuated by 19th century stone ballustrading that borders the boundaries of our rugby, athletic and cricket pitches. A small hedge divides us from the adjoining golf course and then, sparkling in the sunlight, the Solent and the Isle of Wight add interest, mystery and magic to a view that may only be described as sublime. Such a view defines this wonderful prep school, situated as it is on the outskirts of Lymington and very close to the IOW ferry. Space in which to grow, the ability of mankind to create something special out of raw materials and the identification and recognition of potential: all, I believe, are significant and appropriate similes for a prep school such as ours. As the stepping stone towards our children’s lifetime of learning, the facilities and opportunities presented by their prep school sets the course for the future and I am proud of Hordle Walhampton’s strong links with senior schools such as Winchester College, Bryanston, Harrow, St Swithun’s, Downe House, Canford and Clayesmore, to name just a few. These have resulted in Hordle Walhampton children gaining impressive scholarship and Common Entrance results because here academic achievement is encouraged and rewarded and, as one of our past pupils once said:

“this is a school where it’s cool to be clever”.

This Easter The Owl and Monkey Haven opened it’s door. It has been created to provide a safe, happy environment for primates and birds of prey who find themselves without a home. These animals and birds need the Havens care because they would not survive if released into the wild. This is for a variety of reasons such as age or injury or simply because they haven’t learnt the necessary skills to fend for themselves due to being bred in captivity. The animals and birds go to the Haven when they have nowhere else to go.

To win one of two family tickets, simply answer the following question:

“When did The Owl and Monkey Haven open?”

Please remember only one entry per child is permitted, please write clearly with your name address, aged and phone number and send your answer to The Rainbow Directory, PO Box 119, Bembridge, Isle of Wight PO35 5WZ. By the 30th July, or you can enter the competition if you visit www.thefamilydirectory.co.uk All winners will be notified by phone and by post. What is private fostering? Private fostering refers to when a private arrangement is made for a child under the age of 16 (or 18 if they are disabled) to be cared for by someone other than a parent or close relative (for example extended family, friends or other non-relatives) with the intention that it should last for 28 days or more. This does not include children who are being looked after by the local authority. Under the Children’s Act ‘close relative’ is defined as grandparent, brother, sister, uncle, aunt or step-parent. Private fostering arrangements could include any number of different situations such as: • Children sent to the Isle of Wight for education or health care by birth parents from overseas; • Children living with a friend’s family as a result of parental separation, divorce or difficulties at home; • Teenagers living with the family of a boyfriend or girlfriend. What must I do? If you think you could be involved in any kind of private fostering arrangement you must notify us immediately by contacting the referral and assessment team on 525790. We can then give you further information and advice. Under the new laws, failure to notify us is an offence. What will the council do? Knowing where your child is will help us make sure that he or she is being well looked after. We will initially undertake an assessment of the arrangement and ensure that the carer is suitable to look after your child and that the child(ren) are living in a safe, secure environment. We will make regular visits to see the child(ren) and will give help and advice when it is needed. (See advert above).

Island Families

Photography Jane, Graeme, Iona & Ailsa Why do you like living in Whippingham

Its like living in rural Isle of Wight but being within easy reach of Newport, Ryde & Cowes. We love walking to the Folly Pub on the River Medina and to dip our toes in the river & play on boats.

Favourite Local Park

I love meeting up with friends at the play park infront of Osbourne House. Its safe, easy to park, free and best of all has picnic tables outside plus a lovely coffee shop within arms reach.

Favourite Local Club / Class

Both children have loved Rythm Time music classes & PJs school of dance - lots of mums & dads come from all over the island to support these.

Favourite Child - Friendly Restaurant

Larry,Jacqui & Georgina Curtis

We are huge fans of the Bluebell cafe at Briddlesford Farm. Family run business & farm shop with superb Milkshakes & the added bonus of baby calves to watch.

Why do you like living in Brading?

Favourite Place on the Island

Puckpool Park and also Brading Marshes - a well known Nature Reserve. It has a really good bike riding route which, on an energetic day, takes you all the way into St.Helens for a well earned ice-cream at The Duver!

Steephill Cove for that feeling of being truely on holiday. A crab sandwich & ice cream and endless rockpools at low tide. Plus the bonus of the playground at The Botanical Gardens.

It is really quiet and rural with a quaint little village.

Favourite Local Park

Best Children’s Book

Favourite Beach

Favourite Child – Friendly Restaurant

Any of the Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler series... too hard to choose! Gurnard is a firm favourite. Always lots to watch on the water, an adventure playground, great cafe & ability to scoot / pushchair all the way into Cowes. Always bump into friends as well.

Georgina loves ice skating and can be regularly seen at the Ice Rink in Ryde on a Saturday morning. The Wight Mouse at Chale with its very own Pets Corner and huge ice creams.

Favourite Place on the Island

Freshwater / Yarmouth - anywhere in the West Wight. Stunning views and lovely walks.

NSPCC - We Need Your Help Nurseries on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire are invited to get on their marks, get set, GO! for the NSPCC

The NSPCC’s Pedal Push is back. And this year it’s set to be bigger than ever with nurseries in on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire invited to join in the fun. The NSPCC is encouraging nurseries, playgroups and schools from all over the UK to be a part of this ‘wheely’ fun event and raise money for children and young people who rely on the charity’s help. Pedal Push, which is now in its 14th year, is a really flexible, easy way for children to raise funds for the NSPCC. Toddlers and youngsters are sponsored to pedal, ride or be pushed around a fun course at their nursery, playgroup or even their local park. It’s easy to organise and can be held at any time of the year. There is no minimum distance or number of laps that must be completed and it is suitable for children of all ages and abilities to take part in. Organisers will receive a free Pedal Push pack that contains medals, stickers, flag template, sponsor envelopes and certificates for each child along with a poster, a finish line banner and a helpful ‘How to’ guide. The pack also includes lots of activities and top tips to download to prepare for the starting line. Joanna Winsborough, NSPCC community fundraising manager, said: “Pedal Push is a fantastic and healthy annual fundraising activity, allowing young children to get on their bikes and trikes and make a real difference for other children. The money raised from Pedal Push will go to our Child’s Voice Appeal. “Since the Appeal launched in 2008, ChildLine has counselled over one million calls, helping children through their worries, and enabled live, online counselling through ChildLine.org.uk for the very first time. We are also developing the NSPCC’s Helpline for adults with concerns about a young person, enabling us to help protect children who are too young or vulnerable to help themselves.

Vital funds raised through initiatives like Pedal Push are enabling us to train more counsellors, develop the services as technology evolves and answer even more cries for help from children.

If you are interested in organising your own Pedal Push, register now at www.nspcc.org.uk/pedalpush call 0800 10 1996 or emailpedalpush@nspcc.org.uk for more information.
