D
uring November 2013, I joined a fitness group called “Extreme Boot Camp” in Tustin Ranch. After years of a sedentary lifestyle and lamenting over my weight and body shape without any consistent results from several dietary and failed exercise programs, I found my inner power and decided to express an aspect of my strength through this fitness program.
dance for the Temple, the instructors, and students who would enroll and develop marketable skills.
In the first weeks I did things I never thought I would do, like jog up a hill, full length pushups, something called a “burpee,” and much more. I was sore every day in places I didn’t know I had muscles but, every day, I accomplished a little more. After the six weeks, I dropped a dress size, was sleeping better, had more clarity of mind, and more energy. This change in my attitude towards my self-care was years in the making that came from a seemingly unrelated experience I had the month before at the Temple of Light.
As much as I planned, organized, and wanted the event to be successful and result in the registrations we hoped for, a part of me was frightened, wary, and intimidated by my potential strength to create something so wonderful so easily.
In October, we sponsored a day of demonstrating the healing modalities taught by our Academy. We invited more than 100 people with the idea in mind that, at the end of the day, we would have approximately 30 registrations for our offered courses. This day was six months in the making. I had high hopes and expectations attached to its success in creating financial abun-
As I reviewed the potential impact of the enrollees on our financial situation, deep down inside somewhere the idea having this type of financial success must have hit some discordant or incongruous belief within my psyche that it was not safe or okay to have such a wonderful thing happen.
I could feel the contrary emotions seeping into my thoughts and feelings. I engaged in a classical move of simply denying them and pushing them down. Needless to say by the time the day arrived, because I had not addressed my fears and intimidations, they had gained enough power to govern my energy and the day ended without a single registration. I was devastated and stunned. My husband, Ardavan, said I should consider the day a “dress rehearsal” since it was our first attempt and think of it as an operational learning experience. << continued from page 5 ever, I knew in my heart there was more to it. In the weeks that followed, I tried to unwind and explore the complex emotions I was experiencing. Why did this happen? And more, importantly, how can I use this experience for personal growth? I knew from my work in this field how powerful we are energetically and it only takes a little fear to reverse or destroy what we have created. Although I was disappointed, frustrated, and sad, I knew I was on the brink of a great realization and if I could be in a place of personal non-judgment, I would see it. I told myself I was proud of how I reached for the stars and if that’s what I needed to do in order to see the bowling balls attached to me holding me back, then it was a good thing or else I would never have discovered them. So I pulled up my boot straps and said to the Universe, okay “show me my bowling balls.” I meditated and contemplated for weeks trying to touch the parts of me that unwittingly sabotaged my success. A friend uses an expression regarding a belief we may have. She says “It makes sense until it doesn’t.” Whatever fears I had that sabotaged my success on some level made sense to a part of me and all I needed to do was get to them. I comforted myself knowing I had reached for the stars with this event and I was grateful for being ambitious. I knew when I embraced a lack self-judgment coupled with pride at my courage, I would see truth. After days and days of introspection while holding myself in a place of non-self -judgment, I realized I felt I was not worthy of showing up in the world with that much power and strength to create something so wonderful and win-win in nature. I did not get angry when I discovered this, although a few years ago I would have. I thank the Universe I have come so far in my journey. In fact, I just heard myself saying “Oh, that again. Okay, let’s go a little deeper.” As I asked the Universe for guidance, I heard the voice of Spirit say, “You are ready to be strong.” I closed my eyes and breathed in those words, hearing and feeling them, asking if I was ready to accept them as truth. As I felt the words go through my body and mind searching for something inside that wanted to argue with them, I was so grateful when I heard no objections. I said, “Yes, I’m ready to be strong.” With that statement came over me one of the tenderest moments I 6 Radiance
January/February 2014
ever experienced. I felt a part of me emerge that had been dormant for my entire life. It came out of hiding and it simply no longer “made sense” to keep that part of me held down. It’s a worthiness thing. In that moment, I felt whatever I had done “wrong” in my life no longer had the power to tell me I couldn’t or shouldn’t be all I wanted to be. Everything that had previously convinced me I was not good enough to be empowered was simply my life experiences and lessons and now no longer forums for personal judgment. What I realized is when we are afraid or feeling unworthy of showing up in the world as the best possible version of ourselves, we pull back in one or more of the three following areas, career (mind), health (body), or love (spirit). When you think about it, it’s always in one or more of these areas we do most of the complaining and feel the most sense of loss. The pullback could be allocated in one area or can be evenly spread throughout the three. My ranking is: love is great, career is good but I want improvement, and my health needs much improvement. Even though we may have one area where our strength is the most compromised until all three are in balance, we are not reaching our true potential. In other words, even though I used to say, "If could just change my body all would be well," the truth is I was experiencing a hold back in all three areas. One drags the others down in some degree. I had this moment on November 1, a Friday morning, one day shy of three weeks since the failure of our event. I was exhausted and low on energy from the previous three weeks of soul searching. I just had my epiphany and I wanted to have a little rest and self-indulgence before going to work that afternoon. I made a cup of tea and watched television. I happened to find a station showing the “Extreme Body Makeover.” The show’s personal trainer makes a one-year commitment to changing someone’s life who has severe weight issues. As I watched, I heard again in my head my newfound mantra of, “I am ready to be strong.” I decide I am now prepared to make serious changes to my body. After the show was over, I checked my e-mail and in from the Universe came my invitation to step into my newfound strength. I opened an e-mail from Enzo Weber, a trainer from “Extreme Boot Camp Tustin Ranch” inviting me to participate in the next six-week session beginning on Monday, November 4. I laughed, said an
TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS
explicative curse word or two, and replied I wanted to sign up. When we spoke the next day, I told him I was afraid scared because, for the first time in long time, I was making my bodily strength and health a priority. He was reassuring and encouraging, gave me a shopping list and the locations of the work out sessions. I spent the weekend wondering what on earth I had gotten into and rolled my eyes towards the sky at the swiftness of the delivery of my request. I said, “Very funny” upward to any sentient beings of which I was sure were smiling smugly at me. Sometimes when we step into our power, the ego (who thinks it is doing us a favor by saving us from the despair of failure), will step in and give a final attempt or two at convincing us not to do what we set out to do. The evening before I was to begin the work out sessions, my husband and I had tickets to see Deva Premal and Mitten in Escondido. I assumed since the concert started at 7 p.m., we would be home by 11:00 p.m. and I would be good for the next morning. As it turned out, a warm-up band started at 7 p.m. and by the time Deva Premal came on at 9:15 p.m., it went well after 11 p.m. I wasn’t home in bed until after 1 a.m.
It was in this synchronicity and solidarity of the three did I see how easy things could be. It is truly like a machine with 99 working parts, but it only takes one part not working properly to bring the whole thing down. A friend shared a quote from Rev. Michael Beckwith in answer to the saying of “God helps those who help themselves.” Rev. Michael’s rebuttal to this is, “The Divine Universe helps those who are in harmony with it.” When we are in harmony, we are strong. Our efforts and intentions come back to us materialized swiftly and beautifully and the road is easy. Take the easy road by discovering your “weakest link” and see how paying loving attention to it will bring about changes in all aspects of your life. With love, light and prosperity, Rev. My ego told me not to go the next day, to wait a day or so, because I would be tired, etc. etc. However, when morning came, I dragged myself out with little sleep and no breakfast. Suffice it to say day one was more than a little rough. Yet I kept going back and everyday was getting stronger, more flexible, more energized, more optimistic about the changes I was going to see, and, most of all, more self-confident. What happened then was the most surprising. My newfound empowerment transferred into my job and love life. I started getting more referrals for my personal mentoring work and class sign ups. We ended up having one of our best financial months. And even though my love life was already in good shape, I became more confident there, too, sharing more, being more playful, and more intimate. Although I had always known intellectually the mind, body, and spirit are truly one with only giving the appearance of being three separate energies, it was not until I made the effort to strengthen the “weakest link” did I see how they pulled up together. 4 Ways Your
Darkest Moment Could Change Your Life
By Mark Bowness
C
rash. Bang. Reality. As I woke up, a dark misty haze was swirling around my mind. The moment I realized I was in a hospital bed, the events of the past 24 hours came flooding through my mind. I had tried to take my own life. At 26 years old, my 7-year marriage ended, and along with it, the nonprofit organization I worked so passionately to grow was pulled from under me. Living ceased to be an option. My wife walked out and as I sat in our apartment surrounded by everything we built together, the future looked dark and overwhelming. It was a future I was certain I was not willing to endure. I turned to Google and keyed in the words “most painless and quickest way to kill myself.” I will always maintain my attempt at wiping out my existence was the best thing to happen to me. It total-

ly changed my life. Whether it’s the end of a relationship, the struggle to find a job, or an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and lack of direction, we all experience “dark moments.” It is these difficult times that can become most profound. Let me share four ways your darkest moments could be the making of a better life, should you choose to see this as a new doorway.
1. Forced self-intimacy
When life takes you to the darkest places, no one can understand how you feel or what you are going through. Others may have had a similar experience, but only you can react the way you do. During tough times, we are forced to stare at ourselves and gaze deep into our soul. As we engage in these moments of forced self-intimacy, we make crucial decisions that redefine who we are, what we want, and
what we are willing to accept or not accept. It is the choices we are forced to make during this dark period that lay the foundation of a powerful life change. 2. Blank canvas opportunity
We take life for granted. Trying to end my life was my awakening moment to this truth. I realized we live only once and made a decision to view my life as a blank canvas, to start again, and paint whatever picture I desired for my future. I created an eco-island business in Fiji that gained worldwide media attention, was filmed for 18 months, and became a TV show that aired in the UK, Australia, and America on BBC. My darkest moment became my catalyst to pursuing life in all its fullness, and as a result, I embarked upon a crazy adventure.
TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS
3. Benchmarked experience
When we experience a powerful life situation and nothing feels as though it could get any worse, we have then built a foundation of experience on which to construct the rest of our lives. Nothing could be any worse than trying to take your own life. So I launched a bold, daring business idea – if I went bankrupt it could never be as bad as non-existence. The tough times we endure give us a place of reference and offer the motivation to continue. When we realize that we have endured “X” and it was horrific and terrible, yet we are still standing, we are filled with the hope we can get through the smaller battles each day.
4. A moment of awakening There are times when everything piles on top of us. We choose the wrong partners, incorrect behaviours, turn to drugs or alcohol…or worse. Friends and loved ones may tell us we are on a destructive path, but we don’t listen because it is a path that brings us comfort in the moment. There are times when we are given a place to break down. It is through this “breaking down experience,” we undergo a powerful transformation, letting go of all that no longer serves us, arriving at a moment of awakening. Then we rebuild ourselves, truly discovering who we are, what we are about, and everything we stand for – from the ground up. These are the powerful moments of true awakening.
During my darkest moment, the only person who may actually have experienced much of what I was going through was the poor guy who wrote that post on Google. If you are on the precipice as we approach the dawn of this New Year, I encourage you to not simply endure your life, but to embrace it. In fact, so you won’t need to go through this alone, I’ve created a free online community called New Year’s Revolution where you can find support from experts and people like yourself who are working to get over the hump! You’ll find a community of people, a life-changing eBook, webinars, and plenty of encouragement to start your new life. It was a New Year’s resolution which changed my life! Don’t wallow. Grab life by the horns, wrestle it to the ground, and overcome your demons. I know you will look back say this moment was the best thing that ever happened to you. I believe in you.
Mark Bowness is passionate about changing people’s lives. After trying to take his own life, he made a New Year’s Resolution to totally turn his life around, and only three months later, he had created an international business which was featured in media around the world and became a five-part time series that aired in the UK, America and Australia on BBC. This year Mark has brought together 31 life-change experts who have created a FREE eBook, Webinar and community that will empower YOU to radically transform your life in 2014. Is This
the Year? By Ellany Kincross
I
s this the year you will meet the person of your dreams? Is this the year you will get that new job or raise? Is this the year you will be able to segue your passion into a full-time career? Is this the year you will lose those 25 pounds? Anticipation, excitement, promise, and a new start. These words and more describe the clean slate we get with the arrival of a new year. It ushers in the expectation for our hopes, desires, and dreams. While we are excited, we also find ourselves feeling uncertain and confused. “Could this really be the year?” we ask ourselves. Sadly, many of us give up on our dreams, hopes, and desires before we have reached the mid-point of January. Why do we veer off track? How do we go from committed to defeated? The answer lies in our unconscious mind. In recent years, scientists have concluded that 90% of our thoughts are unconscious. The 10% of our thoughts that are committed to our desire to lose 25 pounds is often defeated by the 90% of our thoughts that are happier with the extra weight. As such, that 90% will most likely put up a fight to keep the weight. As you can see, the conscious mind takes the attitude that it should be full-steam ahead for our hopes and desires; however, the unconscious mind applies the emergency brake. Our unconscious mind contains thoughts, beliefs, patterns, and feelings we have from this and previous lifetimes. Since we are unaware of these belief systems, we are at odds with ourselves to attain the things we desire. One of the best ways to tap into the unconscious mind is to engage in a regular meditation practice which al-
lows us to go within and connect with the essence of our true selves. Inner reflection is a power tool that enables us to reconnect with those unresolved parts and pieces of our unconscious that need healing. In sessions with clients, I recommend they begin a meditation practice. When I make this suggestion, I meet resistance. Sadly, in today’s busy world no one wants to make the time or expend the energy to meditate. Why do we resist slowing down, quieting our thoughts, and entering into an inner journey? I feel the answer is twofold. The first reason is our love of technology. I am a huge fan of technology and the way it has enabled us to stay connected with each other. Cell phones, iPods, and laptops are brilliant, amazing tools. As a society, we are so busy “being connected” we do not want to be with our thoughts, feelings, and emotions. In essence, we are using technology to avoid “being with ourselves.” The other obstacle to inner reflection is our unwillingness to look at the past. The key to a better life is to heal the past so we can create a better future for ourselves. Many people do not understand that their ability to manifest something is tied to the beliefs they have in their unconscious mind. Lauren’s story is an example of this. When I first met Lauren, an attractive woman in her mid-20s, she detailed her disappointing experiences in the LA club scene. She admitted she was tired of meeting guys that she would date once or twice and then never hear from again. Lauren had had enough and wanted to know what the obstacles were to meeting the right man. Her blocks were evident to me right away. She held a number of unconscious thoughts and Radiance

A commitment to clean out your inner closet might be the best New Year’s resolution you can make for yourself and at the same time a gift that keeps on giving.
Not wanting to do the inner work, Lauren resisted my attempts to go deeper and do some soul searching. Time and again, I asked Lauren to take a meditation class, listen to a meditation CD, watch meditation videos on YouTube, read a book about meditation, or sit down, center and focus so she could connect with her thoughts. Repeatedly, my efforts were thwarted.
Journaling exercise to begin your inner work:
beliefs with regard to her parents’ marriage to which I encouraged her to take a deeper look.
Each time I saw Lauren, she would detail her recent dating adventures. There was the guy she met at work and dated once, the guy she had met at salsa class and dated twice and the current cute guy she had seen while having brunch with her friends. Unhappy, dissatisfied and frustrated by these dating encounters, Lauren complained to me. “Please. Sit down and look at the disappointment you have. The sadness is sitting there waiting for you to connect with it. Give attention to the sadness; let yourself cry, feel the pain and you will heal. By healing, you will change your law of attraction. By changing your law of attraction, you’ll be in a better place to manifest the right relationship.” I said. “No, I don’t want to be bothered. I just want to meet the man of my dreams,” she said. Lauren and I went back and forth regarding this issue for a long time. Feeling as though she should explore other options, Lauren decided to end our work together. I was saddened by her decision because I realized she would probably never face her unconscious thoughts and beliefs. The relationship of her dreams had gone from something she could reach and grasp onto to something she would let wither away and die. Going within and connecting with our unconscious thoughts, beliefs, and patterns can be a scary path to traverse; however, it is only in making peace with these unresolved parts of our inner landscape that we can release them and open ourselves to a new way of thinking and existing. What do you want to manifest in 2014? Is it the partner of your dreams? Do you want to step into a new job or get a raise? Is this the year you bring your passion to the forefront? Are you looking to lose those stubborn extra pounds? Do you want to start that novel you have dreamed of writing? Is this the year you will pursue that advanced degree? Do you desire to step into the next level of who you are? 14 Radiance

Please allow 10-15 minutes and have a paper and pen handy. Before beginning, please turn off the cell phone. Begin by sitting in a chair or on the floor in a relaxed position. Take a few minutes to relax yourself from head to toe. Give attention to your thoughts. Any thoughts that recur can be put aside with the assurance you will resume thinking about them once the exercise is complete. When you are feeling focused, relaxed, and ready, ask yourself a question aloud that pertains to what you would like to manifest. For example: What is the thought or belief pattern that is keeping me from losing that extra weight in 2014? Once you have asked the question, open your eyes, pick up your pen and paper, and immediately write the word, words, or sentences that come to you. When you have finished writing them, close your eyes and connect with their meaning and message. How do you feel about this message? Does it resonate with you? Are you feeling resistance? What are those feelings? When you are ready, come back to the room. Ponder these words as you go about the rest of your day. These words contain light, love, and wisdom. This wisdom can help you achieve your desires. Ellany Kincross is a psychic, sensitive, and healer who has been doing readings for more than 15 years. Archetypes in
the Info Cloud
O
ur continulously-on electronic devices have connected us to a pulsating web of information, social chatter, and the possibility of endless distraction. In a communications environment where everyone has a voice, and multiple “truths” run free, being connected to everyone all the time can easily overwhelm our brain’s defense systems. We sense that our hyperconnectivity with its benefits can also lead us into an endless hall of mirrors, trapping us in the morass of our electronically-magnified addictions and fears. Clearly, we need to enlist our spiritual helpers as we enter into the new information cloud! I believe by turning to the inner world of myth and archetype we can find the wisdom to navigate this new environment. One powerful tool is the deep wisdom of our protector archetypes drawn from Jungian psychology: the Warrior, whose work is to set and protect boundaries from a deeply grounded place; the Lover, who can establish clean connections with “the other;” the Magician, who is able to discern shadow from light, and recognize the larger patterns; and the Sovereign, who, through blessing and generosity, can change the codes of reality itself. We can call

By Steven R. Vedro upon these inner helpers to guide us through new territory we are creating as we extend our nervous system on to the planet itself.
The Magician In cyberspace, where every digital bit affects all others, having a guide that sees through the “data smog” and recognize the underlying patterns, the meta-information, is critical. This is the Magician’s domain who is comfortable in the shadow places, one who is a systems-seer, capable of finding her way in a sea of conflicting signals. The Magician is comfortable walking in the worlds of the manifest and potential form. She sees beyond habitual concepts to underlying patterns modulating in reality. And, because she can pass the illusion, she is not seduced by every stimulus. ‘Look at the carpets rising and the straw blowing; branches, leaves, and trees dancing; the pond wearing rippled armor,’ all these things look different, Rumi tells us, but “in root and reality, they‘re one: the wind.” The Magician must be alert to the temptation of the mental realm, becoming detached from the earth, and losing touch with her heart. Google’s reliance on its data-mining processes has much Magician energy about it: wonderful results can come forth, but sometimes
she provides results completely disconnected from life! Those who follow the Magician in cyberspace must be alert for the intoxication of data-gathering, for the delusion that “only the right algorithm can find the truth,” for the temptation to download “just one more app.” But, at its best, the Magician reminds us to venture past our fear of the unknown, to widen our reception channels, to take in more frequencies, until we can see with what Sri Aurobindo called “the eye of complete union,” finding, hidden truths in the data all around us.
The Warrior We are familiar with the Warrior’s shadow. Violence and aggression against projected demons and external enemies, rigid attachment to rules and procedures, distance from life’s messiness, are signs of the wounded or immature Warrior archetype. We see these behaviors all over the web: flaming wars, scattershot spam, hate speech, and “trolls” set out to destroy the infrastructure of the network itself; in its passive form, hierarchical systems of control that stifle others’ creativity and sharing. In its positive aspects, we call on the Warrior to protect our boundaries, defending our personal information from expropriation by those
TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS
who may want to harm us or use our data for inappropriate purposes. He gives us a shield to protect us from the constant bombardment of data distractions in our hyperconnected world. He gives us the will to turn off our smart phones, to take pause and take a breath before hitting the “reply all” button. The Warrior is not tricked by appearances (the Lover’s weakness) or seduced (as is the Magician) by the complexity of near-infinite choice. Warrior energy fuels the use of the internet and social media for justice and civil rights, for calls to use technology for global service. Listening to the cries of the Lover, this archetype takes on the responsibility of pushing the Magician to simplify and clarify the complex data patterns about global warming, population growth, pandemic outbreaks, etc., in such a way that individuals and groups can take specific action. Tapping the power of the Warrior allows us to navigate the cloud from a place of personal safety, tap our true creativity and find our expressive voice.
The Lover The Lover seeks connection, sparks our creativity, and holds us in the web in her heart center. Relationship and reciprocity is the core communications focus of this archetype, and her greatest desire is to reveal our dreams and joys to a trusting circle of friends. The Lover is a strong advocate of “crowd sourcing” and open-systems, freeware and shared content. She must be alert however, to the seduction of self-promotion and mutual ego inflation flowing like a dark current through social media networks. When in shadow mode, the Lover can lead us into obsessive concern
about not being connected, and to engage in compensatory over-communications to the point of drowning the important signals around us. She often mistakes codependency for compassionate listening, getting hooked into other’s stories as if they were “real.” A wounded lover can respond by becoming “thick-skinned” and cynical as a way of self-defense, eagerly awaiting another scandal or embarrassing video thrown up on to the web for us to see. At the other extreme, the shadow can take the form of hyper-sensitivity and the “victim syndrome,” compulsively finding more reasons for loneliness in every friend’s Facebook status update or Twitter post. The explosive growth of Facebook and social search, the flood of heart-tugging videos on YouTube, and the success of viral campaigns for human and animal rights reminds us the Lover has never been banished by the geek Magicians of cyberspace. For this we can be thankful, for it will be the Lover responding to the calls for environmental sanity that keeps us from destroying our spaceship Earth.
The Sovereign The Sovereign operates from a place of blessing and generosity. His attitude to web traffic is not to “understand it” [as a Magician] or “change it” [as a Warrior], but to observe it with love and compassion. The Sovereign understands our flood of tweets and emails can inundate and overwhelm, or invite us to pay attention to where we put our attention, knowing what signals require action, and which ones are part of the background symphony of existence. The Sovereign reminds us to prac-
tice what I call “ambient awareness meditation” – observing the “instruction codes of reality” without reflexively jumping to process them into thoughts, emotions, and suffering. This is a form of “mindfulness, watching the codes go by, indifferent” to one story over another, but still connected to life, processing the reality of the outer world in full consciousness that one is in fact, data processing! As we become more comfortable with our real-time connection to the planet’s multiple voices, calling forth our archetypical guides, we will see ourselves less as individuals competing for resources, power, or status, and more as one node in a joyously, noisily communicating system. With system awareness, comes the chance to see in the Cloud beginnings of a paradigm shift in consciousness: the modeling of a world where we connect with every being through awareness of that interconnection, with the larger network, what the mystics have understood as “unity consciousness,” stepping into the Cloud not as dependent children, or dangerously independent adolescents, but as “inter-dependent” adults, bringing forth a transformation and healing of our planet’s nervous system. New Year and You
T
he New Year is a time for new beginnings and new resolutions. It is the time for new ideas and plans to burgeon and future accomplishments visualized.
As the New Year approaches, you begin to connect with the possibilities of life, like the child that believes they are unstoppable and anything is attainable, or the plant the opens its buds to the warmth of the sun and the connection with other insects. The problem can be that you are projecting into the future what you have not accomplished in the past or rather than blooming you are ruminating about the past and fearing the uncertainty of the future. So the New Year comes, and you do not live up to your expectations. In order to connect to the myriad of possibilities in your life, the message here is that you may need to let go of what you are holding onto that is keeping you from moving forward. In other words, it means facing your fears and sweeping them out of the closet where they have been buried. Now who really wants to do that? Who really wants to voluntarily face their fears and open themselves up to uncertainty? Well children do it, unknowingly, all the time. They take risks. They imagine greatness and adventure. How often do you take risks? How many times have you decided to have an adventure? When do you use your imagination to help you mitigate uncertainty? 18 Radiance

By Eva Selhub, MD If you do, you might be able to face your buried fears and let them go once and for all, so that you could connect to the possibilities of your life. When the stressors of life accumulate, your buried fears get triggered and they activate your fear response. When in the fear response, you connect to little, least of all the potential of life. The fear will shut you down, physically, emotionally, and psychologically. In fear, the neurobiological mechanisms are such that you lose higher cognitive functioning, your heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension increase, negative emotions preside, and your sociability is null and void. You lose your connection to the social support around you, to the resilience person within you, and to the larger universe that can guide you (this includes your imagination). These are the very commodities that help you overcome stressful situations, stay healthy, and happy. Ah! But there is something you can do! You can begin by connecting to your fabulous self, the love that surrounds you, and the help that may be available to you. First, honor the tension and anxiety you are feeling. You have every right to feel this way. Second, acknowledge that this is an opportunity to heal buried fears. Third, gently and kindly allow yourself to receive the golden rays of light from the sun in the sky and the aromas of love and life to fill your lungs and your heart (real or imagined). Bask in it. continued on page 20 >>

Seventh, let yourself fully inhale and completely exhale as you receive and release. Receive and Release. You can even use your hands to sweep the tension and fear out of your heart as you exhale. Now, you are changing your physiology from stress to balance, opening up the neurons in your brain to perceive possibilities rather than fear and dread. When you open, you open to the people who can help you, the universe that can support you and the resilience within your own mind and body. Last, when you are done receiving and releasing, run around outside, for no reason, other than to run around. This may not change your life in an instant, but

The Slow Lane:
My Resolution to Quit Running, Physically and Mentally, in 2014 By Crystal Sokoff

y podiatrist gives me the news: you have tarsal tunnel syndrome, engorged veins, a broken toe, inflamed tendons, and a weak reading on your bone density scan. Your treatment options are foot surgery now - or foot surgery later. I didn’t like the options. I’m an active duty Marine Corps officer, an attorney, a trail marathoner, an active leader in my church’s youth group, a wife, and the founder of a lifestyle company. Putting my feet up for five months while they recover from surgery didn’t sound conducive to my goals. “What happened to my feet?” I ask, “How did they get this bad?” I struggle to hold back the flood of emotion building in my throat. “You over did it,” he says. “Your feet don’t like running up 5000 feet of elevation or hiking with a hundred pound pack.” Walking out of the hospital, I actively remind myself to have faith. Despair can only exist in the absence of faith. “This is just a minor setback,” I say to myself. Still, it feels like a terminal diagnosis. While practicing the refined art of feeling sorry for myself - eating chocolate covered fruit mix and watching Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies – I get a call 26 Radiance

from my friend Lisa asking me to dinner. Lisa has cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive, noncontagious impairment. Usually occurring in premature infants, it causes the body’s muscles to be permanently tense and rigid. Lisa is a beautiful, intelligent blond, blue-eyed woman, but her struggle to live a normal life with cerebral palsy has been challenging. She is in constant pain. She can’t drive a car. It takes her two hours to eat every meal. She has to watch a movie five times before she is able to understand the story. She says, “I have lived thirty-six years in the slow lane.” When we meet for dinner at the Soup Plantation I tell her about my foot drama. “We all have our little handcarts to push, Crystal,” she says, in her sweet comforting manner. “Some have to care for a handicapped child. Some have back pain. You have foot pain. Try to have fun with the pain. Ask the Lord to help you pull your handcart or lift it for you.” I am impressed by her wisdom. I am also ashamed at my relatively insignificant problem in the face of her obvious, debilitating handicap. “Have you always been this positive?” I ask. “I have always been positive, but everyone has dark days,” she responds. I watch her fork; it is shaking and jerking in the air above her plate. She is finally able to make it land on a single piece of lettuce. It takes another minute before the fork reaches her lips. As a matter of politeness, I try to slow down to Lisa’s eating pace. After thirty minutes, however, I retrieve

my third plate from the buffet line, full of drizzling chicken and chive potatoes. Lisa is still plugging away at her salad, capturing one piece of lettuce at a time. I am awe struck at her tenacity and grace under such extreme circumstances. She tries to convince me that she is blessed to live the slow life. “Slow living is the best,” she says. “Take eating for example: I appreciate every aspect. I taste everything more. It’s also better for your digestion.” “Maybe we are all meant to take two hours to eat,” I say, joking. “I would be less stressed I think.” “Yeah,” she agrees. “It’s called enjoying life.” In some ways, Lisa isn’t just being forced to live the slow life, but the better life. There is an entire movement dedicated to slow living. Lisa could be their spokeswoman. The Slow Food movement started in 1989 in response to the opening of a McDonalds in Rome’s Piazza Spagna. Slow Food’s mission is to counteract fast food and fast life with the promotion of locally grown, home cooked alternatives. There have since been reciprocal Slow Clothing, Slow Travel, Slow Schools, and even Slow Sex movements.
see every possibility before it happens. For instance, if I see a glass of water, I first look at the glass. I make a note that the glass could spill. I then move the glass out of my way. I move the glass slow, like a snail, but I don’t spill. Which way is really faster?” Lisa’s observations are profound and the perfect antidote to my ailment of doing too much. Without being conscious of it, Lisa is living the philosophy of mindfulness or Zen, that awareness that can open up new dimensions of well-being and compassion in ourselves. There are Buddhist practitioners who spend an entire lifetime obtaining the peaceful existence that was thrust upon Lisa. As the clock nears nine o’clock, waitresses start stacking chairs and sweeping floors around us. I feel worried that we are imposing on the staff. “It is only going to take us about twenty minutes more,” I tell a passing waitress named Jenny. She smiles and says, “No worries, take your time.” Lisa smiles back. Her calm radiance has a powerful impact on everyone. I remember what another Lisa fan once said: “To me, Lisa is literally an angel on earth.”
I reflect on the 1000 miles logged in my runner’s diary this past year. I’ve run up Southern California mountains, across creeks and streams, and beaches at sunset, but I can’t say I’ve been enjoying life like Lisa. I’ve been dragging myself through the mandatory miles, music up, head down. I haven’t been eating healthy. I have a disgusting addiction to energy drinks and a worrisome amount of credit card debt, all symptoms of the recklessly speedy life.

Learning from Lisa, my resolution for 2014 is to slow down and stop mindlessly running through life. I have faith that by living the slow life, my feet will start to heal by themselves.

Our
True Nature By Bob Ginsberg
I
s it just me, or have others gone through periods of contemplation where they question the meaning and purpose of their existence? I suppose this is not an issue for those who are convinced our existence is the result of a random series of events, and our death extinguishes our essence for eternity. There is no need to question a bigger plan if no design ever existed and we live in a meaningless world. However, for those who believe physical existence without purpose is illogical, that feeling of unfulfillment must arise from time to time. In seeking answers, we first must determine our true nature. Let’s assume we were put on Earth by the universe equipped with dual components. The dominant part of most mortal beings is comprised of our physical attributes – our bodies, physical senses, urges, survival instincts, emotions, and desires. Yet, when our needs are met, when the outward signs of success and happiness are present, we sometimes 30 Radiance
January/February 2014
are haunted by the nagging feeling something is missing. I don’t think my life situation is much different from many of yours. There were times I felt depressed despite the fact I was lacking for nothing. Three healthy, wonderful children, loving marriage, financial success, beautiful home, and all the toys – yet a void that remained a mystery occasionally took over. Let’s examine the other component of our essence. I’ll call it the soul – that non-physical part of our consciousness that exists in nonmaterial realms and has access to knowledge and emotions that most often remain hidden to our physical self. I believe this part is our true nature. Our physical existence provides clues and glimpses of recognition, but leaves most of us unfulfilled. Why do you suppose it feels uplifting when we do something that helps someone in need? Why do we reach an altered state of consciousness or rapture when listening to music that resonates, or become one with nature as we
become immersed in its beauty and majesty, or find solace in meditative journeys? It has something to do with tapping into our true nature as beings of love, compassion, and interconnectedness. When we satisfy our physical needs out of greed, lust, or personal gain, we remain unfulfilled as our actions go against the nature of our true self. This process of self-delusion is too pervasive in the physical world as we continue slogging along with our neuroses in a medicated society. Could it not be our anxieties, fears, depression and deficit disorders are manifestations of this feeling of unfulfillment as we yearn to discover and join our true essence? The profound fear of death shared by many is also in direct conflict with our non-physical self that knows life to be a continuous journey of discovery and progression. It’s not as if our soul doesn’t try to assist. The signs and communication are there for those who are open to receive the thoughts that seem to just appear - the dream messages and visitations, the physical manifestations
TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS
and unexplained synchronicities – all meant to provide the evidence we seek. There are some for whom these signs and assurances are never received. However, the soul paves the way near the end of life through deathbed visions or near death awareness, when the glimpses bloom into full awareness of the birthing to another realm.
What can we do to find more contentment and less detachment? I can only speak from my experience. There were years after my daughter’s death when I looked upon my death as the only possible respite from my suffering. If you would have told me it was due to my failure to recognize my true self, I probably would have walked away from you, or worse. Today, 11 years later, the feeling of unfulfillment is significantly lessened. I attribute this to an increased openness, a re-assessment of priorities, personal non-physical experiences,
scientific research, and glimpses into our true nature. There is definitely a correlation between one’s degree of grief and recognition of a higher self. This growth does not happen overnight, and we need not do something earth-shattering to move closer to our higher self. Earth splintering might be a better term, chipping away by simple acts of kindness, recognizing the subtle information sent your way, and seeing connective patterns instead of a series of isolated fragments in a disconnected life. A simple hug may be infinitely more important in the scheme of things than disingenuous obedience to religious dogma. Sharing another’s joy or pain might provide greater insight than an education that regurgitates previously established principles and theories. Empathy will trump intellect, savvy, power and wealth every time in the context of moving
MEDITATION
closer to our real self. The more we resist our true nature, the more disconnected we become. I have espoused this before, but I believe the purpose and meaning of physical life is to blur the boundaries that seem to isolate us from who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.

Introspective Year By Elizabeth Summers

everal prominent themes will move through the filaments of life in 2014. To find the predominant theme for 2014 year, we add 2+0+1+4=7. The Number Seven can be difficult to grapple with, as it is like holding a cloud in our hands. Certain buzz words need to be kept in mind as we travel through this rather unusual energy of 2014. Choice, discernment, silence, spirituality, and ethics will be guideposts to be aware of and put into practice. From a human perspective, the Number Seven influence branches out in many directions, ranging from a focus on mental health, to the environment, and spirituality. This energy ruled by Pisces can bring a strong interest in the occult and the metaphysical. However, it can also attract skeptics who doubt all that is not pragmatic and selfevident. Spiritual practices will become more main stream. People will become more discerning in choosing between preachers and teachers

who are not for their highest good and greatest joy. Listening to and trusting one's hunches will become more imperative in decision making. The Number Seven is an inner vibration prompting one to silence, philosophical contemplation, and analytical thinking, all in a space of reflection, rest, and solitude. The pressures of life will bring forth a desire to get away from it all, and the best place for that will be nature. National parks will become more popular as Mother Earth's energy becomes a healing balm in our lives. The environmental protection of trees and water will become a more popular issue as people become reacquainted with the calming aspects of nature. This will lead to an increase in businesses like camping gear, mobile homes, nature tours, and river rafting that bring us back to a simpler lifestyle within a natural habitat. This contemplative and private vibration will cause many to withdraw and spend time in solitary
activities often brought on by electronics, thus causing relationships to suffer. One might notice the divorce rate increasing in a Number Seven year as couples find they do not have much in common and withdraw emotionally and sexually as a consequence. A desire to be alone, not necessarily lonely, can become intense, thus moving the couple apart. Writing of all kinds will increase, including personal journaling. Because people will not be verbalizing many of their thoughts, journaling will become a more popular form of self-expression. Expect further development in the understanding of mental health issues. Depression caused by economic fears may become more of a public issue to be dealt with. Movement away from chemicals to more holistic approaches for medical treatments may become more popular and written about. More emphasis will be given to organic foods as the Number Seven has a strong instinct for purity of health through foods. This enthusiasm is
TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS
similar to a Virgo health fetish.
The Number Seven is a code for the intellect, inventiveness, and research. Expect advances in technology to surge in 2014 as science, technology, and research will become optimum. New appliances, medicines, gadgets, and widgets will come to the fore, boggling the mind. A need to uncover hidden answers will become a joy to many; cold case answers will be discovered by detectives, fossil forms with hidden treasures will be unearthed by archaeologists and anthropologists. Secrets in relationships never before been revealed may become unmasked.
other guy's,” in order to be happy, content, and in one's own power in life. To move forward in 2014, we must come from our hearts, not our heads and egos. Number Seven is about trust and acceptance. Stay with and trust heart-based choices will guide you where you are to go and be, doing what you need to do. Know your soul will take as long as it needs to move you forward in blessings and when you surrender (which is different than giving up), what comes into your life next will be better and for your highest good and your greatest joy. A sense of the past becomes a curiosity to Number Seven energies. People will want to enjoy “the good ole days” or “happy days” when there was not as much fear. Businesses that focus on nostalgia, such as antiques, childhood recipes, and retro fashion may show themselves again throughout 2014. Discernment will be a key word in 2014, physically, financially, and governmentally. More will be revealed as to the ethics (or lack thereof) of our elected officials, and a "push" to remove them will resound in the ethers. There will be a sense of retreat and re-evaluation in people's lives throughout 2014. It will become blatantly obvious the truth has not been provided to them by those they have trusted, and the populace will begin to understand they should no longer give their power away. The year of 2014 is about "personal regrouping." Shakespeare wrote, "To thine own self be true." The introspective year of 2014 is about finding one's own truth, not “the

The New
Moon
By Adrian Windsor, PhD
M
y grandfather was a Michigan garden farmer who grew amazing crops on his 300 acres of dark, black, rich muck soil on his farm between Saline and Clinton, Michigan. As a child, I took the diversity for granted: corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupe, strawberries, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, potatoes, beets, turnips, and parsnips. He imported grapes from Italy and made wine. His hobby was growing flowers – delphinium, foxgloves, Canterbury bells, larkspur – wonderful, healthy perennials. He farmed by The Farmer’s Almanac. He gauged every activity by the sign of the Moon. For crops that produced fruit below the ground – potatoes, beets, turnips, parsnips – he planted when the Moon was Full. For crops that produced fruit above the ground out into the light, he planted when the Moon was New – strawberries, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, cabbage, lettuce, and kohlrabi. The fruit of the “New Moon” was not only my favorite, but also it had a cheerfulness to its nature. You did not store “New Moon” produce in dark, damp, smelly fruit cellars. You either ate it or canned it at its peak. Nothing ever tasted better than a tomato on the vine warmed by the sun or a chunk of the watermelon someone happened to drop in the field or an ear of sweet corn immediately after it was picked. Some things we savor in the sun and some things we bury away for a “rainy” day. This is applicable to our life. Since you probably have not been thinking much about the moon, let me refresh your memory. The moon may appear to be fixed in the sky, but actually it is in orbit 34 Radiance
January/February 2014
about the Earth. The earth rotates around the sun, and the moon orbits around the earth. This takes 27 days, so the moon experiences about thirteen days of sunlight followed by thirteen days of darkness determined by how it is being lit by the sun. When the moon is between the Earth and the Sun, the sunlit side of the Moon is facing away from us. For one day, it is completely dark, the Dark or Black Moon. For the three days that follow, we have the dark New Moon. In other words, we have moved into the New Moon, but we cannot see it. When the Moon reaches the other side of the earth, the sunlit side will be fully toward us, and we have the “Full Moon.” At the time of the Full Moon, the sun, earth, and moon are aligned. The moon always shows the same face to the earth. Our interpretation of whether the Moon is “New” or “Full” or “Dark” is our viewing angle depending on how much of the side facing us is illuminated at any given time. If we explore this as a metaphor for a time to plant, we can see that in the unfolding of our lives. It is not about the moon, but about our perception of the moon, our perception of the phase, and its relationship to achieving what we intend. If life has taught me a single lesson, it is that perception is all there is. Perception determines how we think, act, and relate to people, things, and events. The new moon is richly metaphoric for molding our perception about when and what to plant if we want to grow. New moons are a blank page upon which to speak our dreams out loud and state our intent. When we enter the new moon, however, the moon is completely dark for three days. During this phase, we are confronted with a time to release past disappoint-
TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS
ments, acknowledge false idols, banish anything that does not serve us, forgive those who have injured us, and forgive ourselves for the injuries we have inflicted. It can be frightening because we enter the void and emptiness of uncertainty. In this preparation phase, we may embrace the darkness and accept its gift of a time to pause and make ready. This is the moment when the old passes away, the new is anticipated, and we send out our prayers, wishes, and desires to the universe. Trusting in this darkness is a cleansing act and an act of pure faith. The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins expressed this Dark of the Moon when he wrote in his poem “No Worst:” O the mind, mind has mountains; cliffs of fall Frightful, sheer, no-man-fathomed. Hold them cheap May who ne’er hung there. Once we have emerged from the darkness, into the visible “New Moon,” we can set our intentions for what we wish to create, develop, cultivate, and make manifest. This is the moment when we perceive opportunity for change, perceive possibility ready to unfold, perceive ourselves as the designers, the makers, and the doers of our destiny. It is the time to be perfectly clear and focused about our purpose and passion. It is the time to speak our word, declaring to the Universe what it is we wish to draw into our life, defining our good, cultivating the courage to move forward and forge ahead. It is the time to plant the seeds for our greater good. This is when the moon “waxes,” grows stronger, increasing healing, prosperity, attraction, success, gains, love, friendship, and protection. This is when the seeds we plant sprout, take root, and flourish. This is when our energy is aligned with the energy of the sun and the moon, when our light prevails in all of its manifestations and we travel “light,” without burden, as we find the “light” and fulfill expectations, as we are one with our higher spiritual “light” in consciousness. By the time the Moon is “Full,” we will be in a better place to enjoy the fruits of our cultivation and labor, to feast cheerfully on the bountiful harvest we have co-created. When I formed my consulting and coaching company, Wise Choices Unlimited, I must have been subliminally mindful of the dark days before “New Moon” was visible in choosing the name. We always teach what we need to learn. My focus was on “wise” choices because of what I have learned from “bad” choices. We all experience days in the darkness. It is how we use them that
make the difference. As my greatest teacher, Emerson, stated it so well in “Compensation:” The changes which break up at short intervals the prosperity of men are advertisements of a nature whose law is growth. Every soul is by this intrinsic necessity quitting its whole system of things, its friends and home and laws and faith, as the shell-fish crawls out of its beautiful but stony case, because it no longer admits of its growth, and slowly forms a new house.

Harried Holidays? Your Aura Colors, Stress Signs, & Tips to Be Happy By Pamala Oslie
W
e know the holiday season can be stressful and we may find ourselves strung out and unhappy when we are expected to be our happiest. How we handle the season’s stress has a lot to do with the type of person we are. Knowing that, we can use strategies to deal with holiday demands and make the season what is was meant to be joyous. How can we know what type of person we are? The answer is in the colors of our aura. Everyone has an aura, our electromagnetic field, and we’ve all felt it. We’ve been instantly drawn to some people and repelled by others because we’ve felt their energy. That energy is expressed in different color bands that radiate from our bodies. We call this our aura. I’ve learned in my work as a professional psychic who also sees auras that our aura colors reveal important information about who we are: our personality, relationship style and compatibilities, best career paths, potential health challenges, and more. Discovering our aura color personality type and unique coping skills is a valuable key to knowing how to handle stress. The quiz accompanying this article will help you discover your aura 36 Radiance

Community for Conscious Children
By Mark Patterson
P
eople from all over the world are noticing a distinctive change in children. They seem wiser and possess knowledge that goes beyond their years. They have a sense of knowing that can become intimidating and even overwhelming to parents. Various self-help and new thought authors have called these children “indigo, crystal, rainbow, or even star seeds.” These children tend to have much larger, more oval eyes and have calmness about them. They feel a deep connection to nature and the animals and are always ready to help other people. Often they are drawn to a vegetarian diet and show genuine love and kindness to others. These children will find the educational system boring and are drawn to video games as a way to “stimulate” their minds. Parents are often scared when their child begins to speak about things that happened before they were born. They become unnerved when a child speaks in great detail about a departed loved one. They have difficulty when a child points out things that a parent is unwilling to address within themselves. These children want to know if are you living your truth … are you in your power? During the few years I have been drawn to work with autistic and intuitive children, I have cases where an autistic child has spontaneously begun speaking with me (despite previous lack of verbal communication). It is like I am becoming a “vibrational interpreter” for these unique children. I had an autistic child who was reluc38 Radiance

tant to come back to the room where I was offering sessions. He was extremely anti-social and fighting with his mother. He was wearing a plastic mask to “hide” from “society.” Once he entered the room, I simply became still with him. Within minutes, he removed his mask and had a tear in his eye. He said, “I have been waiting for you.” He then began to talk to me for more than 20 minutes as if we were old friends. There have been other times in my life when I have had a blind child approach me and find a way to place their hand in mine and ask me, “Please, help me remember God.” It is experiences like these that have guided me to create the Conscious Children’s Network in April of 2011 at the Conscious Children’s Network Conference at ASU in Tempe, AZ. We hosted many best-selling authors including; Dr. Steven Farmer (Earth Magic), Lisa McCourt (I Love You, Stinky Face), Dr. Deb Snyder (Intuitive Parenting), Sunny Dawn Johnston (Invoking the Archangels), Tara Sutphen (Soul Agreements) and many others. The goal of the conference was to educate parents and help them embrace and validate their children’s intuition and psychic abilities. One of our motto’s was “Validate, don’t medicate.” It was an amazing experience to see parents and children sit down and talk about Angels and ET’s. It was awesome to watch Blair Souter from the Bronnikov Method have children and parents playing with energy balls. It was fun to hear children talk about their dreams and hear them speak of their gifts. It was great to see so many best-selling authors come together want-

ing to evolve what we teach our children and give our “psychic” children a voice. It was amazing to validate a couple of gifted psychic teens who got incredible validation while doing readings for two days. We simply offered an experience like no other. Our goal is to educate parents so they no longer fear or misunderstand their intuitive children, but rather embrace and accept them for who they are. We intend to create an online community with resources, tools, and information that people can access all over the world. It is the desire of the Conscious Children’s Network to help evolve our educational system to offer solutions that embrace the whole child rather than limiting ones that places labels on them. We want to create a platform that gives these children a voice for the world to hear.
