Renovation Project

Year: 2023

Location : Iceland

Category : Hospitality

Concept

Considering the client's requirements and the fantastic landscape nearby, the project aims to have a better natural volcano view between the spa and the restaurant. Based on the research of Iceland travel seasons, there would be different sizes of groups to visit. Thus the project separates the spa area from the restaurant area. This caters for both tourists and local clients, while ensuring privacy for people during their spa treatments.

Volcano Landscape

Considering the location of the Sel Hotel and the car park, two entrances would be more convenient for visitors and people who live in the hotel.

Based on the location of nearby buildings and volcano complex, the better view will be concentrated in the area of the yellow line.

The brewery and restaurant sections combine to offer hotel guests and local visitors to accommodate daily meals, afternoon tea and parties and buffets. There is a separate bar in the spa area.

Raising the bottom floor allows people in the restaurant to stagger their eyes and get a better view. It also provides more seating for the restaurant.

Renovation Project Year: 2022

Location : Brighton, UK

Category : Hospitality

Location

This project is located at Madeira Terrace in Brighton, which is a pedestrian walkway faces south toward the sea and stands against the cliff behind. Each arch measures 4.5m in length, 6m in depth and 5m in height. The elegant complex has a common design style and colour scheme but now it was used as a car park.

Thus the project will revitalise this stretch of coastline by renovating this elegant historic space with commercial functions.

Aquatic Acivities

1.

It is usually the first pool from the outdoors, making it easy for people to acclimatise to the water temperature.

The buoyancy of the salt pools allows people to float in the water to help relax their bodies and minds.

The muscles are relaxed and massaged by the rushing force of the water.

Cold and hot water are set separately at knee or ankle depth. It can help the circulation of the joints and the body.

The heat is used to make people sweat, speed up blood circulation and increase metabolism.

Special Himalayan salt bricks are used to form salt walls which, when heated, emit negative ions which are beneficial to human health.

It is usually a land area to prevent people from feeling uncomfortable in the water. It can also be combined with some massages and exercises to relax.

The buoyancy of the water relieves stress on the joints from exercise. It is now becoming more common as a form of fitness.

Converting a Water Tower into an Artist's Residence in Matadero Art Centre

Renovation Project

Year: 2021

Location : Matadero, Spain

Category : Residential

Water Tower
Entrance to Matadero Art Centre
Buildings of Matadero Art Centre

The project represents a call for reflection on the concepts of restoration and preservation, converting the water tower into the memory and record of a place and a moment.

The water tower is 25 metres high and rises above the entire arts centre, providing a good view.

Considering its unique structure and location, the project aims to create a live-work-collection space suitable for artists to live and exhibit.

The lower space was surrounded by small garden pavilions as well as functioned as a makeshift parking zone and a space for stock and support of artistic activities. Now it still can attract a lot of people to visit the tower.

A rainwater collector

To create a series of ecological dialogues for students in Camberwell

Installation Project Year: 2023

Location : London, UK

Concept

This project aims to explore the quality that time conferred on space. The rainwater harvesting system in the installation provides a time frame for the project, drawing more people into an ecological dialogue between people, space and the environment in different time sequences.

Based on the initial model testing with a contrast of different materials, it focuses on the material language of five textiles - weaving, knitting, knotting, crocheting, and sewing were considered as a way of connecting material, time and space. There are some prototypes placed on the right.

Sketch Model

Standing in the context of modern water pollution and the textile industry, the final realization is an experimental rain collector installation. The main structure is made up of a layer of woven wire and multiple waterproof fabrics. There are many gaps in the weave. These gaps in the space allow rain, sunlight, winds, leaves and shadows to pass through. The natural elements through the gaps reflect in the fabric and floor while atmospheric rain drips off the edges. The woven materials work with the environment to form the pattern of the leaky space, interacting with people and recording a period of temporal sequence.

A "Leaky" Space

At Night

In the sunlight, the woven patterns are reflected in the ground and fabric. As the wind blows, the pattern of the space would move with the sunlight and shadows.

In the rain, woven metal wires can help gather more rainwater. Combined with the sound of the raindrops, the collected rainwater will drip down the middle of the fabric into a bucket on the ground. It can also create an acoustic dialogue in the rain.

In the dark, the light at the end of the structure of the woven bridge will be illuminated. The bright space will be seen more in its structure - which may look like a canopy. It provides a space for people passing by to rest and relax.

Pilgrims Heaven

Extension of the St Pietro church - An Architectural competition organised by YAC (Young Architect Competition) in 2024

Architecture Project Year: 2024

Location: Tuscania, Italy

Category: Religious & Hospitality

Site Analysis

Scenery

There are very wonderful idyllic views around the church. In particular, the old town of Tuscania can be seen in the distance from the north-west of the church.

Natural Light

The church is situated on an elevated site with good natural light. As the sun changes, so does the range of sunlight.

Two Circulations

The yellow doors show the location of the six side gates in use. Then, two circulations can be identified that connect the car park to the church.

Concept

The goal of the project was to breathe new life into this ancient church while respecting its long historical background and unique location. In addition, the frescoes in the church crypt also inspired an attempt at hand-painted expression in this project.

Combining natural light and view of the old town, the project also echoes the once defensive function of the old church, located within its walls and surrounding it in different ambiences. Besides, the Pilgrims Heaven is not only open to pilgrims and tourists, but also welcome the local people.
