REDEFINING A SHOPHOUSE | JUKEBOX HOUSE

SITE CONTEXT

NESTLED IN THE JUNCTION OF JALAN PINANG AND NORTH BRIDGE ROAD. THE SIMPLE FACADE BLENDS INTO THE ARRAY OF SHOPHOUSES. SOFT MUFFLED MUSIC OF THE QUARTET LEAK ONTO THE STREET. INTRUIGE AND WONDER DRAWS PEDESTRIANS INTO THE ATRIUM WHERE MUSIC ENVELOPS THEM TIL THEY ARRIVE AT THE COURTYARD. A MOMENT TO REST AND RECOVER ADMIST THE BUSTLING URBAN ENVIRONMENT. 37


THIS PROJECT WAS A S TUDY OF THE SHOPHOUSE TYPOLOGY AND OUR FIRST BUILDING DESIGN. THE HOUSE ACTS AS A LIVING INSTRUMENT, SHOWCASING THE LIVELIHOOD OF ITS INHABITANTS

FOUR INDIVIDUAL DWELLINGS ARE CONNECTED VIA THE PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE RUNNI NG DOWN THE CENTRE OF THE HOUSE SHARED SPACES ARE FOUND UNDER PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE ON THE FIRST FLOOR

TAKING PRECEDENCE FROM PAUL RUDOLPH, THE HOUSE WAS DESIGNED TO HAVE INTRICATE SPATIAL COMPLEXITIES CONTAINED WITHIN A SIMPLE MASSING. THE FEELING OF SPACE IS CONTROLLED BY THE INTERPLAY OF CEILING HEIGHTS AND LIGHT.


SPLIT SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

VISUAL CONNECTIVITY IS USED TO LINK THE INDIVIDUAL DWELLINGS TO THE REST OF THE HOUSE VIA THE STAIRS LEADING UP. THE INTERWOVEN AND MULTILAYERED SPACES ARE ALL CONNECTED TO THE CENTRAL PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE RUNNING THROUGH THE HOUSE.

THIS PROJECT WAS A STUDY ON THE POTENTIAL OF TIMBER AS A CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL. USING TIMBER JOINERY, THIS PAVILION OPENS UP AS PEOPLE UTILIZE IT, CREATING A MORE INVITING FACADE AND APPEARENCE THROUGH USAGE

THIS PROJECT STUDIED THE ENVELOPE, USING THE GROWTH CYCLE OF MUSHROOMS A MOVING FACADE WAS CREATED TO SHIELD AND PROTECT THE INNER RESEARCH CENTRE FOR MYCELIUM. PEOPLE ARE INVITED TO WALK THROUGH THE STRUCTURE TO REACH THE VIEWING DECK AT THE TOP WHILST LEARNING ABOUT THE OPORTUNITIES MYCELIUM HAS IN MEDICINE AND CONSTRUCTION

Compost facility located on the edges as a primarily exothermic process to release the heat out of the building and act as threshold spaces between the outside and inside 3. Conveyor system moves bags to the inteior rooms to be harvested for research or consumption 3. Compost facility stores and processes exhausted substrate 4. Roof farm utilises compost to grow crops for consumption

THIS PROJECT STUDIED SITE SPECIFICITY WITHIN A SCHOOL CAMPUS TO SEEK OPORTUNITIES FOUND WITHIN AN URBAN CONTEXT. A TRANSPORT HUB FOR BICYCLES AND SKATEBOARDS WAS CREATED TO SERVE THE STUDENT POPULATION WITHIN UH MANOA









THIS PROJECT WAS AN EXTENSION OF KENNEDY THEATRE OUTWARDS. PREVIOUSLY A CLOSED OFF BOX, THIS BRIDGE CREATED A LINKWAY OUTWARDS FOR THE THEATRE TO SHOWCASE ITS ACTIVITIES ON A MORE PUBLIC SPACE
