VILLA DALL’AVA FOLLOWS A CUBIC GRID LAYOUT WITH A SLANT IMPOSED INTO THE GRID. A DISORGANISED ARRAY OF PILLARS IS FOUND IN THE CORNER OF THE PLAN CONTAINED WITHIN THE GRID.
STONE AS A HEAVY BASE, GLASS AS A TRANSPARENT INTERMITTENT LAYER AND HORIZONTAL METAL CLADDING ON THE UPPER FLOORS IS USED TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF THE UPPER FLOORS FLOATING.

STUDY OF WALL
VARIOUS FINAL POSITIONS OF THE ROTATING WALL ARE POSSIBLE WHICH OFFER DIFFERENT CIRCULATION PATHS.
MOVEMENT CAN BE MADE ON BOTH THE UPPER AND LOWER PORTION OF THE WALL
THE FINAL PERMUTATION WAS CHOSEN DUE TO ITS MORE DIRECTIONAL FLOW OF CIRCULATION AND SMALLER GRADIENT CHANGE.

CLIMBING IS ABOUT SEEMINGLY UNREACHABLE PLACES. THIS MICRO CAPSULE WAS DESIGNED TO HAVE SPACES THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH UNTIL THE WALL IS MOVED TO CREATE A PATH TO THE TOP. THE SPACE WOULD THEN BECOME A HUB FOR FRIENDS TO GATHER, TRAIN AND SOCIALISE, ENVELOPED UNDER CAPSULES AND THE SHADE NOW PROVIDED BY THE WALL.

THE CLIENTS ARE FOUR INDIVIDUALS RECENTLY GRADUATED FROM UNIVERSITY WITH DEGREES IN MUSIC. ALL FOUR ARE CURRENTLY PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY IN DIFFERENT SYMPHONIES. THEY ARE GOOD FRIENDS AND COME TOGETHER TO FORM A STRING QUARTET AS A PASSION PROJECT.
THEY LOVE TO BUSK TO PLAY THEIR NEWLY COMPOSED SONGS TO THE PUBLIC. THEY REQUEST FOR A HOUSE WITH INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE AREAS AS WELL AS A LARGE PRACTICE ROOM. THEY WOULD APPRECIATE A WAY FOR THEM TO PLAY FOR THE PUBLIC WITHIN THE COMPOUND OF THEIR HOUSE.

INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE CHAMBERS ARE SITUATED WITHIN EACH OF THEIR ROOMS FOR THEM TO PRACTICE. SHAPED LIKE A TRIANGLE, IT DIRECTS SOUND TOWARDS THE NARROW OPENING AND INTO THE CENTRAL ATRIUM.
51
REDEFINING A SHOPHOUSE | JUKEBOX HOUSE
ACOUSTICS CONCEPT
THEIR ROOMS ARE CENTRED AROUND THE CENTRAL ATRIUM USED TO AMPLIFY THE MUSIC PLAYED FROM THEIR INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE CHAMBERS. THIS WOULD DIRECT THE MUSIC TO THE REAR OF THE HOUSE WHERE PUBLIC SEATING IS FOUND.
52
REDEFINING A SHOPHOUSE | JUKEBOX HOUSE
GRID LAYOUT
THE PLAN OF THE HOUSE IS ARRANGED WITHIN A 2500 X 2500 SQUARE GRID, UTILISING THE ANGLES FOUND WITHIN THESE SQUARES TO CREATE SPACES THAT CHANNEL SOUND TOWARDS THE CENTRAL ATRIUM
53
REDEFINING A SHOPHOUSE | JUKEBOX HOUSE
TAKING PRECEDENCE FROM PAUL RUDOLPH, THE HOUSE WAS DESIGNED TO HAVE INTRICATE SPATIAL COMPLEXITIES CONTAINED WITHIN A SIMPLE MASSING. THE FEELING OF SPACE IS CONTROLLED BY THE INTERPLAY OF CEILING HEIGHTS AND LIGHT.
54
SPLIT SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE
VISUAL CONNECTIVITY IS USED TO LINK THE INDIVIDUAL DWELLINGS TO THE REST OF THE HOUSE VIA THE STAIRS LEADING UP. THE INTERWOVEN AND MULTILAYERED SPACES ARE ALL CONNECTED TO THE CENTRAL PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE RUNNING THROUGH THE HOUSE.
