EDITOR NOTE Hi and welcome to CONNECT. We hope you enjoyed our first issue and I would like to take the time to thank you personally for all the good wishes and positive comments received on it, we are delighted you have welcomed it so well and we look forward to bringing you more news and reviews from around the county this month, and what a busy month we have. We meet up with entrepreneur Jim Breen, who first made headlines in the limelight on RTE’S Secret Millionaire, and from there came the brainchild of Cycle against Suicide, as it nears the beginning of this amazing event we catch up with Jim on why it all began.

We go visit the team from Recovery haven, and bring you an insight into the wonderful service they provide.

We also look at what’s on offer for summer for kids by way of summer camps and entertaining kids during the holidays. We attended the fantastic fundraiser that was Ardfert idol. It was great fun and Winner the lovely Megan Sheehy wooed the crowd with her version of Amy Whine house’s Valerie. Cycle Against Suicide We’re encouraging people not just to ask for help once, but to continually ask for help, as and when needed. The thought of asking for help is easier when you don’t need it; it’s harder to ask during those times that you do need it. Getting that message out is our core focus. There is a real appetite for this pragmatic approach. This is not about perfection, where everything is tied nice and neatly in a bow.

This a great fight that we can fight together, shoulder to shoulder. This fight is to break the cycle of suicide on our island by encouraging people to seek help.

Cycle Against Suicide (www.cycleagainstsuicide.com) is the brainchild of Kerry based entrepreneur Jim Breen and came about as a result of his appearance in the RTE series Secret Millionaire in 2012.

The objective of the Cycle is to raise awareness of the help that’s out there for those who are at risk of suicide, self harm, depression or have been bereaved by suicide. Our mental health is just like our physical health, it is something we have to be mindful of and from time to time we have to ask for help.

And that is ok.

This year’s Cycle will take place from Monday, April 28th to Sunday, May 11th 2014. The Cycle, which covers all of the island of Ireland, provides an opportunity to support those who have been affected by suicide. We caught up with the man himself to get a bit of background on the Cycle and what it has done to date.

Hi Jim can you tell us a little bit about how the cycle began and why you wanted to do this so much?

It certainly has raised the awareness of suicide, is it enough or could there be more done for suicide awareness?

There’s a war that we are waging against suicide on our island. A critical part of this battle is awareness of positive Mental Health, awareness of the various things that we can do to help ourselves and to help each other. Of course, awareness is not the entire battle. There is a need for supporting people in at risk groups. That’s what all the voluntary Mental Health Organizations up and down the island of Ireland are doing 24-7, 365 days of the year. We’re a critical part of the army that’s fighting this fight but we’re certainly not the only part of the army.

Jim you are a very busy entrepreneur but still find the time for this, you must be very passionate about it, why is this?

It’s really simple I don’t have any qualifications in relation to Mental Health. I’m not a psychiatrist, psychologist or a Mental Health professional, but I do battle with depression and I do battle with mental health issues.

for the hosts as it is for the guests. It’s a chance to lend your support in a very tangible way to Cycle Against Suicide without necessarily having to get on a bike.

We found that people are connecting because we speak about why we’re doing this and we speak to the cause and the movement rather than simply ask people for money. As a result, people are very keen to help and support the movement. For us, it’s as important for somebody to pour tea and make sandwiches as it is for a hotel chain to provide us with hotel beds. Everybody is part of this fight against suicide on the island of Ireland. Everyone can play their part and I think that’s part of the magic of Cycle Against Suicide. It is all-inclusive.

It has to be all inclusive because suicide is not sexist, it doesn’t hold any prejudice and it has no bias. Suicide affects us all, Mental Health affects us all. We all know somebody, in our family, in our circle of friends, our workplaces, clubs, and schools that has battled or is battling a mental illness. It is something that touches all of us.

Organizing an event like this must be a logistical nightmare do you have a team in place for all this?

We have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of volunteers up and down the island of Ireland.

We have plumbers, electricians, project managers, banking people, solicitors, teachers, guards, paramedics, civil defence personnel, the list is endless.

We have hundreds and hundreds of supporters all working with us shoulder to shoulder to break the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland.

Have you a target for the funds raised?

I’m now 43 and I’ve only just found the strength and the ability to talk about my own challenges for the first time, two years ago, in 2012. We need to be encouraging people to ask for help as and when they need it, not to live with a Mental Health illness in silence not to feel like we’re on our own. The passion for Cycle Against Suicide is very much coming from that. I truly believe that the Cycle together around the island of Ireland will deliver this powerful message.

Our main target is directed towards raising awareness. Every year suicide claims the lives of over 800 people, including fathers and mothers, wives and husbands, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, best friends and colleagues. The issue of Mental Health is so prevalent in our society. We want to spread the message that, “it’s ok not to feel ok, and that it is absolutely ok to ask for help and that help is available both locally and nationally”.

Do you get support from businesses around the country or are they saying no more frequently as there are so many organizations out there now all looking for support?

Finally can you tell us a bit about the man behind it all... yourself, how do you chill out when you’re not flying about the country on a bike or trekking from airport to airport on business.

I think the main reason that we have captured people’s attention and, more importantly, captured people’s hearts, is that we are all about raising awareness. We’re not about raising money.

Nobody has said no. Everybody that we have asked, no matter what we ask for, has obliged and always said yes. It’s important to remember that we’re not asking for money. Predominantly, we’re asking for people’s hearts, we’re asking for people’s minds and for their support.

Our main focus is around raising awareness that it’s ok not to be ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help and that this help is available both locally and nationally. The subtext to that message is that you may need to ask for help more than once from a number of different sources to find what works for you. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another.

We have been inundated with offers of support for homestays which is a critical part of our movement.

Cycle Against Suicide operates a Homestay programme that sees people from across the island of Ireland open up their homes to participants in the event, provide them with a warm meal, a chance to freshen up and a bed for the night. Our feedback has shown that this experience is just as rewarding

I’m a regular guy who happens to be battling depression. I’m 43 years old, 41 of which I battled with depression in silence. This is an incredible opportunity for me to fight my fight against mental illness in a much healthier way. I enjoy sport and I love to spend time with my family and friends. Ultimately, I love making SHIT happen, meaning Some Highly Important Things.

After appearing on the RTE series, The Secret Millionaire in September 2012, I wasn’t expecting the response I got, which was one of absolute love, empathy and massive support. The predominant response was ‘what can we do to help?’. There was nothing to help with at the time. The idea of the Cycle came as a response to a real appetite that the men and women, up and down the island of Ireland, have to do something tangible to break the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland.

It’s quite new on the list of awareness campaigns around the country but it seems to have captured the entire island, north and south, why is this do you think?

Ardfert Idol Connect were delighted to be invited to be part of what was a very exciting and entertaining night in Ballyroe Heights Hotel on March 28th. For the first time ever Ardfert GAA Club put on a show that was entertaining for all the family, it was incredible to see the amount of talent in a small village in north Kerry. Contestants on the night included Lisa Edge, Niall Horgan, Tony O Halloran, Stephen Fahy, Sarah Louise Wharton, Ruth Wallace, Serina Griffin, Sharon O Sullivan, Rosie Young, Magan Sheehy, Seamus and Kevin Skinner, Fiona Dillon O Mahoney, Paul O Sullivan, Cillian O Shea, JJ Prior, Mary Higgins and finally the one direction boys Nicky O Sullivan, Trevor Wallace, David Culloty, Martin Feris and Chris Sheehan.

As one of the judging panel I have to say it was a very difficult decision and it was great that it went to public vote to make the final decision as it would be very difficult to send any one of these acts home.

Winner on the night was lovely local girl Megan Sheehy from Lixnaw with her amazing performance of Amy Whinehouse and Valerie. Even though she came from neighbouring village Lixnaw she was glad to support Ardfert and what they are doing to raise funds for the club, asked if she had any fears she said the most daunting bit for her was the huge crowd that it attracted, but said she was totally honoured to be asked to take part and was delighted with all the new friends she made through the event. Fellow Judge Michael Healy Rae said ‘I think Megan has a strong future ahead of her in the industry’ and went on to say that ‘with the right direction she will go far’ Chairman of the club Stephen Wallace was thrilled with the success of the night and said that he was overwhelmed with the support from businesses and neighbouring communities. He thanked Mark and the team in Ballyroe for their support and also all the businesses that had sponsored the many acts, he said ‘without the support of these companies it would not be possible to run a successful event like this, and in turn raise much needed funds for the juvenile section of

the club’ he also said ‘these are tomorrows future and we need to ensure that facilities are there to encourage playing from a young age’ One lady who must be mentioned is Debbie Driscoll from The Kerry Dance and fitness studio, she had been putting the acts through the paces on the weeks leading up to the event and I have to say she did a superb job, even with the Jedward duo and that must have been some task.. So as a Kerry publication supporting all that’s local in Kerry we were delighted to attend and support the event and would encourage other groups out there to do things with their clubs, it’s a great night and a great with to connect with the community.

Well done to all involved, Looking forward to next year.

OBESITY AND THE CHANGES WE CAN MAKE

We have all heard or read about the obesity epidemic effecting the children and adults of Ireland. The truth is we as a nation have gotten lazier when it comes to exercising and cooking in the kitchen. We take the car even if it’s to the shop around the corner, we watch our kids spend hours on what ever gadget we think will keep them quite rather than wrap them up and send them out to play. We treat ourselves to a takeaway more than we possibly should without realizing that a large meal from most fast food restaurants will amount to well over 1000kcal.

Eating healthy and exercising now will benefit every one of us in the future and by introducing a healthy lifestyle into our family now will give us and our children a healthier future. Eating healthy doesn’t mean going on a fad diet like the low carb diet, high protein diet, GI diet, cabbage soup diet etc. The one thing all these diets have in common is sooner or later we revert back to the way we were without learning from our mistakes.

Here’s how we do it. Reduce the amount of manufactured processed products we bring into our house and keep food as natural as you can. We can’t consume what’s not in the fridge or press. If a product has been grown or was alive at one time and is sold in as natural way as possible you won’t go too far wrong. Buy fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, fish, eggs and nuts. The nutrients you will get from these foods will be far superior to what will come out of a can or packet. Steam or bake rather than boil or fry to hold more flavor and nutrients. Use spices to add flavor

Use nuts or fruit as a snack between meals and keep treats as a treat and not as a habit.

If losing weight is your goal than try cutting your portion size rather than cutting out a specific food group. A simple method for this is to use a small plate for our meals instead of a dinner plate. We start each meal with our eyes first so if a plate looks half empty we automatically think we won’t have enough food. Eat slowly because it typically takes your body twenty minutes to realize it’s satisfied so by slowing down you may feel satisfied before you finish.

Try and increase the amount of exercise you and your family get. We should be aiming for at least one hour of physical activity per day.

If you add up the amount of time we spend on TV. computers phones etc. than exercising for an hour is nothing in comparison. It can be a group effort to get out in the evening for a walk and now with the change in time and the extended light in the evening there’s no excuse. Most kids like to spend time with their parents outside kicking a ball, playing on the trampoline, go for a cycle or walk the dog. if you don’t have the time to this with your child

than try and encourage them to try the old favorite games like Hopscotch, Tag , Chase, Hide and Seek, Red Rover etc ...and wait for that feel good feeling you get after exercise and bonding as a family they are memories you have that will last forever.

If running or walking for charity is becoming your new hobby than preparation is extremely important.Footware is as important as the training so make sure your fitted with the correct trainers to suit you, if your not sure than get advise from a ciropractor. Make sure you are wearing comfortable and breathable clothing and wear the outfit you use in training for the event. New trainers and clothing may look nice but can often chafe or leave a blister which is extremely uncomfortable. Never change your eating habits on the day of an event as you won’t know how your body will react. Eat as normal because if it worked when you were training than it will work the day you have your event.

If walking with friends try and set a pace that is comfortable enough where everyone can enjoy it but more importantly everyone can go the full distance.

NEW WEBSITE GIVES KERRY A BOOST A new website aimed at helping Kerry Businesses, Charities & Organisations to raise their profile has been quietly gaining appreciation within the Kingdom’s communities.

Launched on March 23rd, the main focus of this new website, Kerry Echo (kerryecho.ie) isto encourage people to shop locally and keep their business in the County. The website aims to attract people all year round, providing not only the most comprehensive free directory of nearly9,000 (and rising) businessesacross the County but also updates about latest events and news shared directly from businesses social media communications to visitors of the site. The free directory is designed to make it easy for people to find Kerry services.

The site was developed after its founder, along with many other Kerry Businesses, lost their shop last year due to the recession. The founder also noticed that ‘shop local’ schemes, usually appearing around Christmas time, were a great boost to business, but there was little supporting local names during other times of the year.Kerry Echo’s founder, Tony Hartney tells us “You may have often seen the slogan, “Buy Irish” Well, “Buying Irish” is a fantastic idea – keeping the Euro in Ireland and helping to boost Irish business and promote Irish jobs. So why not “Buy Kerry First,” that way you’re still buying Irish, but you’re keeping your Euro in Kerry, which will help Kerry businesses and Kerry jobs and also keeps you

buying Irish at the same time, killing several birds with the one stone.”

Tony is a native Kerry man who returned home from London to launch his business ‘HartneyPhotographics’ in Ballybunion.

He and his photographer wife Polly ran a successful business and were encouraged to open their photographic art Gallery in Main Street by their online customers. They ran their Wedding Photography, Restoration and Photographic Art gallery from this shop and finally gave it up last year as Ballybunion struggled to attract business; recently being listed as one of the Irish towns worst affected by the recession. They continue their photographic business online (www. hartneyphotographics.com) as they watched, in anguish, more and more shop doors closed within the County.

Originally just a Ballybunion initiative, Ballybunion Echo became Kerry Echo, driven by a determination to support and boost Kerry as a unique and valued whole.

Kerry Echobegan to promote things to do in Kerry, local news, events from businesses, community groups and charity organisations, offering a hub of all the latest, news events and information from the County.In the background, as the Facebook page gained interest, Kerry Echo’s founder Tony was developing a linked Website. Close to his heart, he launched the Kerry Echo website

(kerryecho.ie) on his birthday, March 23rd this year and already his facebook page has achieved over 2000 followers and a weekly reach of up to 60,000.

Pink Ribbon Walk

the First to be Held in Kerry

If you go out and about in Kerry over the next few weeks you’re likely to see splashes of pink in locations around and about the county in the run up to the first ever Pink Ribbon Walk to be held in Kerry in the town of Kenmare on May 18th. As well as being the first for the town and the first for Kerry it is hoped that the funds raised by the Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk will also mean that Kenmare becomes the first Pink Ribbon Walk to help the national pink ribbon walk movement reach a mammoth €1million! This is a fantastic achievement for the walks which are all run by community volunteers and one that the Kenmare committee is proud to be a part of. Holding the walk in Kenmare was the brainchild of Sandra Bias whose own family has been affected by cancer. She and the committee chairperson, Lisa Ragosa attended other Pink Ribbon Walks and loved the atmosphere and passion everyone had for the walks as well as being stunned by the turnouts. Knowing how good Kerry is at getting behind a cause and residing in Kenmare they decided to bring the walk to the town. The first thing the newly-formed committee had to work on was securing enough funds to administer the walk and immediately set about holding a coffee morning. The result was outstanding with many people donating cakes and over

€1800 being raised. The next fund-raising event secured the remaining amount needed to hold the walk and tested the metal of the people that took part. At the beginning of March the group held a Splash of Pink launch night to publicise the walk, raise awareness and thank the people of Kenmare for their help to date. The event was a sell-out with excellent local attendance and lots of people joined in with the theme of a “splash of pink” with pink feather boas, pink wigs and pink clothing in abundance. Eileen Kearney, Community Fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society spoke on the night and highlighted just how important the fundraising is. She explained how funds are used to benefit cancer sufferers and their families as well as providing funds for ground-breaking, expert collaborative research. The walk itself takes place on Sunday 18th May and the committee is delighted with the response so far. The €20 registration fee paid to participate in the walk essentially covers insurance, information pack and a special T-Shirt as a mark of the fundraising efforts. T he Importance of Dental Care Marcus Mac Domhnaill Fearful of Dental Treatment?

Many people have some degree of dental anxiety before visiting their dentist for dental treatment.

People should be aware that they are not alone in this, as it is a common feeling prior to a dental visit. There is no shame in this and the good news is that help is at hand. Ní gá eagla a bheith ort a thuilleadh.

The causes of dental anxiety or fear can be varied. It can be related to a bad dental experience in earlier life or indeed a perceived loss of control. A strong gag reflex can also make people nervous before treatment.

It is very important to discuss your dental anxiety with your dentist. Many fears can be dispelled when the treatment is done as a joint effort between the patient and dentist, with the patient having the control to stop treatment for breaks when they need to. Explaining proposed dental procedures prior to treatment can also dispel any myths that cause dental anxiety.

Some people may need extra help however. Modern-day dentistry is there to make procedures as easy as possible for the patient. Local anaesthesia (injections) can numb areas to prevent pain. Injections can be made comfortable by using anaesthetic spay or gel on the gums before injections are given to patients.

Conscious sedation can be used along with anaesthetic injections. The sedative drug can be given (I.V.) through a vein in the hand or arm and makes people feel very relaxed.

It is quick acting and very safe. It allows people to return home after an hour or so, and can have an amnesic effect surrounding the dental procedure.

A sedative gas solution is another method that can be used in conjunction with local anaesthetic injections. In this instance, a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen can be inhaled through the nose using a special nose piece. This method of sedation is also quick acting. The effects stop instantly once the gases are removed. It is very effective in both adults and children. It cannot be used if you have difficulty in breathing through the nose e.g. with colds/sinusitis.

Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation is often termed laughing gas. It needs the co-operation of the patient to breathe through the nose – especially so in children. Patients need to be assessed before I.V (intravenous sedation) or gas sedation.

Patients can continue to talk and respond to their dentist during sedation treatment.

General anaesthesia is used when local anaesthetic injections, on its own or in conjunction with sedation is not suitable. This may be necessary in difficult extractions or long procedures, and would involve a referral to a hospital setting.

Dentists are there to help tailor make a treatment plan with you. Please discuss your fears with them so that a suitable method of providing treatment for you can be chosen.

Well we are well and truly into Wedding Season, and if like me you are lucky enough to be invited to a wedding then the panic begins on what to wear, Thank God that there is no Fashion Police TV or there would be some monumental fails.

So What Not To Wear: Wearing white to a wedding is so disrespectful to the bride and is right up there with the mortal sins of a

wedding guest. Never fear though as a visit to O’Sullivan Ford Kenmare will sort out any headaches that may occur when choosing that perfect outfit. Niche Killarney is another must visit for all you fashionistas who are looking for something unique, and as the name suggests has captured the Niche market for something different. They cater in sizes 8-22. What really caught my eye in this store is the incredible selection of colourful pashminas and let’s be honest gals we ain’t living in a sunshine state and a little cover up for the chilly evenings is essential.

While there are some golden rules in being the perfect wedding guest another one is don’t show too much cleavage or wear something that may be more suited to a night clubbing.

Never wear a dress short enough that you resemble a “lady of the night” because at the end of the day you don’t want to be the talking point at the day after celebrations.

This brings me nicely along to the relatively new phenomena that is the day after outfit.

This is the day that the hair may be feeling the effects of way too much hairspray and pins to keep the updo intact for the wedding (Thank God I’ve short hair) I recently visited Taelane Store Listowel and wow are we spoiled for choice here in choosing that smart/casual outfit. As the feet will resemble a blister factory from the dancing at the wedding, check out their über cute White Stuff pumps and allow the tootsies to breathe again. There is a super range of glorious coloured dresses, jackets and accessories available and the service is second to none.

While we are all pondering on the what to wear question, there is an array of help at hand by using the knowledge and customer service of staff in shops. To be truthful the staff of shops know the stock they carry and when they suggest something that may be outside your comfort zone listen to them. It is seldom that a staff member will be dishonest with you and this is the beauty of shopping in local shops as opposed to chain stores. They want you to be happy and to return which is something that is lost in large chains. There is also something intensely gratifying in supporting local businesses. So ladies be sure and check out your local boutiques. I will try and share as many of these hidden gems as I can over the following issues. Be sure and check out coming issues of our new favourite magazine where I will cover outfits for the races and the dos and don’ts of summer fashion.

3. Please bring a pair of shoes the height you usually wear for dressy occasions, the all important foundation garment, well fitting bra and seamless knickers. If possible, bring a sample of the bridesmaid dresses to avoid clashing.

4. Don’t be afraid to experiment with fabrics and lengths and shop with an open mind.

Once you are comfortable in an outfit, confidence will ooze from you and this will make the day all the more enjoyable.

Remember you are wearing the outfit and not the outfit wearing you.

5. There is an etiquette regarding mother of the bride/groom outfit selection. Rule of thumb, mother of the bride gets first pick of the crop! As I was asked recently, for same sex ceremonies, I would advise the mothers to flip a coin.

6. Always sit down in your outfit before purchasing. How far does the hemline rise? Is the outfit still comfortable and looks well? Remember you will be doing a lot of sitting down!

7. Bring the outfit with you when you are buying your headpiece. This must compliment the outfit and not compete with it. Also, the shoe handbag and headpiece must only all match when everything is the same shade as the outfit.

A more modern twist is the shoe and handbag in the same colour and the headpiece and outfits the same. Like the song “ 2 out of 3 ain’t bad”.

WOMEN IN MEDIA BALLYBUNION

A

3 day event ran in the lovely North Kerry town of Ballybunion is an idea born to Joan and John O Connor of Kilcooly House Ballybunion in 2013. It’s built around local lady, the late Mary Cummins who was a journalist with the Irish Times and Seanad Reporter back in the late 60s/70s. She was raised in the local Garda station in Ballybunion. Ballybunion has had many famous ladies of the pen make it their second home including Maeve Binchy who spent most of her teenage summers in Ballybunion, her book Echoes is unashamedly written about Ballybunion.

We created the Mary Cummins Award for Women of Outstanding Achievement in the Media and our inaugural winner was Miriam O Callaghan RTE. 2014 saw Miriam O Callaghan return to present the Award to Geraldine Kennedy former Editor with the Irish Times.

The Event was opened by Mr. Dick Spring, former Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, who spoke about knowing and working with Mary Cummins while she was a Seanad Reporter and also the struggles women face working in media and balancing their home and working life.

Irish Times Columnist, Roisin Ingle, told us all about Maeve Binchy, her career, her days in Ballybunion and her book Maeve’s Times.

Carey, dealt with the controversial topic of Gender Quotas and Does the end justify the means? This was followed by a very lively debate from the floor and then a live broadcast by Newstalk of Sarah Carey’s show Talking Point.

Evelyn O Rourke then took to the podium to tell us all about her journey with breast cancer whilst pregnant with her second child. This was then followed by a complimentary Eco tour of Ballybunion, endeavouring to showcase our lovely cliff walks, beaches, and other unspoilt scenery and historical places of interest.

Sunday morning saw another interesting symposium, New media and the future of journalism. This was headed by Mary Dundon of UL and participants were David Labanyi On line editor of the Irish Times and Shane Phelan of the Irish Independent. This was deemed to be a very informative and successful seminar giving great insights into this area of journalism.

All in all the future of Women in Media Ballybunion, seems bright with great feedback from both participants and attendees alike. The aim of the organisers would be to build a hugely successful event, which captures both a national and international audience, generate a new awareness of Ballybunion and ultimately increase the flow of tourists to Ballybunion and North Kerry.

Inside the Beauty Bag Tell us about some of your favourite day wear make-ups, you don’t seem to have anyone in particular you are sticking by?

No that’s true; however I do adore La Prairie foundation which comes with a matching concealer with it which is ideal. As time is limited in the morning I have started using Bare Essentials, the starter kit has it all and easy to apply as I rather not go without my makeup!!!! It’s so handy as its got Primer, Foundation brushes concealer and bronzer, the works really, it’s also very good coverage and natural looking without being too heavy on the face for daytime especially.

i all hope you enjoyed last month catching up with Aoibhin, this month we meet Georgina Ahern Byrne, known to many as daughter of former Taoiseach, or wife of Nicky from west life, but we catch up with the lady herself, fitness trainer, busy mum of three and she still manages to look amazing every day. We find out what she can’t do without in her beauty bag and what tips she can give us to keep us looking good.

Do you like eye shadows or are they a hit and miss piece in your bag?

I love my eye shadows... I have some really pretty cased ones from the Dior collection, I got as gifts from my fairy godmother so I treasure them, so handy and compact for my bag, but I have to say I also love Chanel shadows, the shades are amazing. And of course the Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes Kit... see I just love my eye shadows... Eyeliners are also a must for me day and night just a little less by day.

So Georgina with a new baby and What about the lips, any special two busy boys do you have time for tips here, there seems to be lots of a major facial ritual each morning? goodies here in the lip section of your bag?

In the morning with such little time I love to use Aveeno Moisturiser, I find it very good and calming on my skin as an everyday cream. However as a treat I love ‘Sisley’ day cream and facial scrub, that’s a real treat when I have time to do the major cleanse ritual.

For my lips I always prefer the lighter tones and baby pinks, there’s also a nice pout polish by sleek in there, I got that from a glossy box gift I received it’s so handy. My one tip

is always carry a labello rose in the pocket, gives shine to lips all day.

Georgina your nails are always perfect, how do you manage that in a busy house..

I just love my tips always have them done.

French polish is a favourite for everyday, but again I love bright pinks, or fresh corals, At the minute I am loving a baby pink, I am a big fan of Shellac as it lasts... very handy when washing bottles daily.

Oh yes look after your skin we let it take the abuse of battering winds and strong sun, so be careful to look after it, My secret tip to keeping my skin soft... it’s a lovely product by Payot Paris, a body oil called Elixir Paillete, Its super for repairing and nourishing the skin and its shimmery too which is nice for the arms and legs.

Finding your personal style can be such a pain. Some people never go looking for it, but when you do eventually find your personal style - it is worth it. Imagine, when people ask you “What is your personal style?” on the red carpet years from now, you can give them a solid answer.

Even if you don’t plan to walk a ‘red carpet’ (more room for me), then if you know what your personal style is, you won’t find yourself wasting your money on pieces that you are never going to wear. So that is going to keep your accountant (mom’s count too) happy and then everything can just fall into place…

What is personal style?

According to the dictionary, it is “An eclectic interior furnishing style indicative of personal preferences and lifestyle.” Or, in simple terms, the way that you express yourself through your clothes and makeup.

How do you find your personal style?

Some people at 100 may have never found their personal style, and there is nothing wrong with not finding it. Because not many peoples’ style can fit into a certain box. It may not even fit into multiple boxes, it might be something completely off the charts. Which is fine too!

Actually, it is almost better this way.

For my generation, I could really rant on to you for a long, long time. What are you wearing to those discos? I am impressed that you have managed to stretch a bandeau top into a “just about covering dress”, but is that really what you want to wear? I know that you may not be “dancing” very much at discos, but please stop trying to be the people from “the only way is Essex”. Those are not your role models, dress your age. You have plenty of time for the rest later in life, if you really want to go down that path. (I won’t be joining you…)

Get the “key” pieces Just because you have figured out your personal style, does not mean that you need to go and spend a fortune on all the things that you have previously liked on good old Pinterest. If you have decided that this is your personal style, you only need to pick up a few things to set it all in motion. Don’t break the bank, or rob one!

You may never be able to find it, but here are a few tips if you need to discover your personal style for your own sanity. The next time that you find yourself saving something to your pinterest board or posting an outfit onto your instagram, take a look at what you like. If you are edging towards celebrities who already have that “one style”, then you are already on the right track. But, life can be made difficult as just because you like what that one celebrity is wearing, you may not wear it yourself.

So you have to delve a little deeper and put your finger on the kind of style that she (or he) is pulling off, and go down that direction. You can then continue to do this with a bunch of different celebrities that you like, and create a moodboard for yourself all about your style, (Pinterest makes this easy). You can be a little bit of everything, and if it makes you feel a bit better again you can make up a mash-up name of all of your chosen styles. Like mine would be something like “swift-funky-cute-bohochic”, and it changes all the time.

If you are going down the biker chic look, then invest in a good leather jacket. Yes, a good one. I know you may think that the one from Penneys is such a bargain, but you have to think of it in ‘cost per wear’. If this is your style, then this is your staple piece and if you have your staple pieces right everything else seems to fall into place.

MENOPAUSE WHAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW Menopause is an inevitability that every woman faces. The term literally means “last period” and occurs when the body stops producing oestrogen from the ovaries.

Driving to the supermarket-getting there and wondering what you came for!

Feeling hot and flustered in meetings, wondering has anyone else noticed Tossing and turning all night, exhausted in the morning Some women dread it, others sail through it. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare time in anyone’s life. Not everyone has symptoms but for those who do there are many options to deal with it.

The average age of menopause in women in this country is 51 years.

This means most women will live at least one third of their lives after the menopause making it even more important to be as healthy as possible.

Younger women can undergo Premature Menopause due chemotherapy, radiotherapy to their ovaries, when the ovaries are removed surgically or for genetic/ unexplained reasons.

Symptoms of Menopause - what are they like and does everyone get them?

Approximately three quarters of all women have some symptoms. Everyone is differentsome women have more, and varying types, of symptoms. All women cope differently.

Symptoms include: • Hot flushes varying in severity • Night sweats • Difficulty in sleeping • Tiredness and exhaustion- may be related to poor sleep • Joint aches • Headaches • Irritability • Reduced sex drive/ vaginal dryness • Bladder symptoms which may be misinterpreted at urinary tract infection Medical issues which can be happening silently, and unknown to women, include osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) and cardiovascular disease. We know that cardiovascular disease kills ten times more women in the UK than breast cancer each year (120,000 vs. 12,000) but women in the menopausal age group perceive breast cancer as being their biggest health worry.

Osteoporosis has a huge impact on women’s lives by increasing the risk of hip fractures and the ensuing health problems. 50% of

people with hip fractures never return to full independent lives and 20% die in the following year. Thus, where at all possible prevention is better than cure!

For women who are menopausal at a younger age such medical problems will obviously occur earlier and have greater impact- this makes seeking early medical health crucial.

Brain health can also be an issue and some research suggests an increased risk of Parkinson’s and dementia in women who have had early menopause.

I have heard about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Is it dangerous?

HRT is “what it says on the tin”!

It replaces the oestrogen that your body is no longer producing. For women who have not had a hysterectomy they also need a hormone called progestogen to prevent abnormal thickening of the lining of the womb.

HRT has many benefits including: • control of symptoms • reducing osteoporosis • reducing risks associated with cardiovascular disease • improving brain health • Reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

There are now a myriad of formulations of HRT available. It can be taken as a tablet, skin patch, gel or combination of some of the above. Nowadays people do not always have to have periods with HRT. Therefore HRT can be individualised and tailored depending on a woman’s needs.

It is acknowledged that the women who benefit most are those who start HRT within 6 years of menopause and before age 60.

The main risk that people associate with HRT is that of breast cancer. Sadly, this has been due to the publicity that surrounded one study in 2003. We know that short term HRT is unlikely to be harmful. Any risk of breast cancer, and even then the risk is small, is after five years of HRT. Importantly –for younger women HRT can be used with safety until age 50 then review.

Like all medications, HRT should be used for the shortest duration and in as low a dose as possible.

In women with complex medical histories a consultation with a medical practitioner with a special interest in menopause and/or gynaecologist may be appropriate.

• Exercise A good programme of weight bearing / resistance exercise is vital for healthy bones.

• Diet If hot flushes are the major problem changes such as cutting out/down smoking, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods may help.

GI dietary foods are known to help menopausal symptoms. It is always useful to look at improving diet e.g. calcium intake, vitamin D, improving omega-3 intake and assessing diet to make it more “heart friendly”.

Looking at cotton clothing/bed clothing, electric fans or a Chillow Pillow may help night symptoms.

Vaginal lubricants can be used by women where appropriate; there a number of specific ones available in pharmacies.

Some women explore non-prescription options such as Red Clover or Black Cohosh.

Legal Compliance – Employer Beware!

There are over 40 pieces of employment legislation protecting employee rights in the workplace and the onus is on the employer

to abide by the obligations set out in this legislation. The National Employment Rights Authority was set up in 2007 “To achieve a national culture of employment rights compliance”. They do this through announced and unannounced workplace inspections where they review employee files, take copies of documentation and interview management and employees as necessary. Examples of information they review include terms and conditions of employment, employee payslips, and hours of work for each employee, annual leave and public holiday entitlements for fulltime and part-time workers and any other documentation required to demonstrate compliance with employment rights legislation.

The NERA Inspector will take copies of the documentation for evaluation before issuing the employer with their findings. NERA may issue fines to employers for breaches of legislation and may also request back payment of wages where an employee has been underpaid. Where excessive breaches of legislation occur or an employer fails to comply with an inspector’s findings, they may be referred for prosecution by the inspector.

The following are some of the requirements employers need to have in place to be legally complaint: • Provide employees with a Contract of

Employment compliant with legal requirements • Provide employees with relevant policies and procedures and record a signed acceptance of same on the employees file e.g. Disciplinary and Grievance procedures, The Bullying and Harassment policy • Pay employees the appropriate rate of pay and remuneration benefits • Ensure any under 18 employees comply with the necessary legislation • Ensure employees get a payslip showing all deductions • Provide Statutory Leave e.g. rest periods/ breaks, public holidays, force majeure leave, maternity and parental leave, and carers leave, etc • Ensure that employees take their minimum Annual leave & Public holiday entitlement and that this is recorded It is important that all employers abide by their obligations set out in employment legislation to ensure not only legal compliance but employee well-being also. The HR Suite can conduct HR audits for employers to ensure legal compliance and will provide a detailed corrective action plan and relevant template documents tailored to specific business needs.

BY ANTHONY GARVEY, MD QUINN GARVEY PR, BASED HERE IN KERRY Your business needs PR coverage and you are wondering how to go about it. These easy steps will take the hassle out of the process, help you sidestep the cowboy or overpriced agencies and ensure you have the best chance of getting the results you want.

Firstly do you have the time and the skills necessary to promote your business yourself or would you prefer to get someone to do it for you?

If you have the time, but don’t have the skills take a short PR course.

Many organisations run PR courses for small businesspeople including the Irish Academy of Public Relations, The Fitzwilliam Institute and the European Institute of Communications. You will be able to manage the PR for your business if you successfully complete one of these courses.

If you decide to outsource, use your network to pull together a shortlist of three PR agencies. Ask for recommendations from your business contacts and then ring the agencies to arrange a meeting.

Three quick dos and don’ts will help you decide on the winner at these meetings: • Do ask them if they are working for any of your competitors or have done so in the past. Loyalty and conflicts of interest are important especially if you are to trust a PR company with your closest secrets; • Do ask for three journalist referrals, who deal with the PR agency regularly and then ring the last one they mention, immediately after the meeting; • Do ask the PR person in front of you at the meeting if they

will be working on your account.

Sometimes at a meeting with a PR agency, you get to meet the pitch team, who are sent out to win the business and then a junior executive is put on your account to handle the work; • Don’t choose a PR company that charges you a retainer.

Retainers are essentially money for old rope, a throwback to the Celtic Tiger era, often tying you to a PR company for six months to a year. There are many reasons a PR agency will offer to justify them, but they’re baloney. The bottom line is why should you be forced to pay this fee, month after month after month?

• Don’t be dazzled by fancy PR company websites, swish offices or brochures. Remember you are looking for results for your business and often the hungrier, leaner agency will deliver them; • Don’t leave the meeting without knowing exactly how much the agency charges and what your maximum monthly outlay would be if you proceed. Try and agree a results-based service and encourage the PR firm to invoice each month for the targets that are achieved, with all the fees outlined up front. Under this system, you will have much better control over your budget, as you can see from the beginning of the engagement what your maximum outlay for public relations will be. And you will be paying for results.

SUMMER TIME AND KIDS - SCHOOL TOURS, SUMMER CAMPS Its summer time and with it comes School tours for the kids before holidays, it’s always the time of year they look forward to as the school tour is planned. When that’s over they start looking forward to the holidays and what camps they can participate in, or maybe parents are thinking about where to take a nice family staycation within the county, or indeed just a day trip to keep everyone in the house a drift of the dreadful cabin fever that can set in over the long holidays.. Well here in Kerry we have no excuse, we are spoilt for choice, whether you are looking for the strenuous rugged mountain walk, or prefer to dip your toes in the water there is lots to do. We went out and about to get a taste for what the kids and the whole family can look forward to this summer.

SUMMER CAMPS

So holidays are out and the kids need something to occupy them... summer camps are a great way to pass the summer and are a great way of keeping them active and away from the XBOX and other indoor activities that now seem to take over everything... swimming camps are great fun for the kids while learning the basics of swimming for those starting out to the more experienced little floaters amongst us. Banna Beach Hotel and Leisure Centre have an excellent summer camp, for kids of all ages, where they learn the basic swimming rules and the confidence to be in the water, while also doing other activities through the day. They always make lots of friends and look forward to going back again.Another great idea this year in Kerry are the Irish Camps where kids can do a three week residency course to ensure fluency in the language at the end of it. These are in Killarney St Brendan’s College the first three weeks of July.

SCHOOL TOURS

are spoilt for choice in Tralee they can visit the Aqua dome, Blennerville windmill which has the amazing model railway, or the Museum in Denny street, Tralee Bay Wetlands and of course for the real smallies and trip to the town park for a teddy bears picnic is always a great day out. Moving on to Killarney again we are not short of somewhere to go, from the fabulous Muckross House and traditional farms, to Nature trails and of course the beautiful lake trips around Killarney. Not forgetting the lovely Kennedys pet farm on route. Dingle of course has the fab Ocean world so get to know the penguins and all about the sea creatures, or pop cross the county to Crag Cave always a great day for the family or school trip alike.

Of course summer wouldn’t be summer without the football and soccer camps always a must for little future Rooney’s, Wellbecs or indeed the Paul Galvin, and Daragh O Shea in the Gaelic side of things. These are always a great source of entertainment and with such an array of clubs both GAA and Soccer around the county there is one near you.

ALTERNATIVES I hear you say my child is too small for camps what can I do? take a trip to some of the outdoor activities as mentioned above, lots of those are suitable for kids of all age groups, they would also love a trip to the Playdium in Tralee, Crazy Cave Castleisland and Buddies Killarney are just a few excellent establishments that are guaranteed to keep your little ones entertained in a safe worry free environment while mum can relax with a nice cup of coffee.

So hopefully we have given you some thoughts and ideas on what to do this summer, we will bring you all the latest updates on further camps and activities for kids as we get them. Have a fun filled summer and remember stay safe.

WHITES WINES FOR SUMMERTIME

Summer has arrived. Ok, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but it is probably as good as it is going to get for us. Let’s be fair, to date we should be very thankful for the fine weather we have had! I am aware however that I’m likely to be out in the garden sipping summery whites and good old Mother Nature’ will open the heavens on me more often than not! Ah well. I’m happy to pay the price in order to enjoy some al fresco wine drinking in 2014.

Summer seems to last about a weekend here on our beautiful Emerald Isle (maybe an entire week if we are lucky) so you have to be prepared for it.

In just a couple of weeks, I will be writing about big brooding reds wines for those chilly autumn evenings. With that in mind, it’s time now to enjoy some white wines that are great for those summery sunny evenings…

Sauvignon Blanc

What can be better than a chilled crisp, zesty Sauvignon Blanc? It is the ultimate summer wine and Marlborough Valley in New Zealand is top of the class for this. Or perhaps try another version of Sauvignon, one that has been blended with a bit of Semillon. That’s white Bordeaux. The fruit in a Bordeaux is subtle, elegant and complex when compared to the New World’s bigger, richer, more in your face bold fruit.

Try these if you can: MOKO BLACK, New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc CHATEAU GANDOY PERRINAT, Bordeaux, France, Sauvignon/ Semillon

“Cool” Whites

A “cool” (as in trendy) white is a pretty broad description term. So what are “cool” whites? For me, it is something unusual. Perhaps wine from a region, country or grape variety that you may never have even heard of! Can’t even pronounce the name! Who cares. Some of the most interesting wines you will ever try are often from lesser known grape varieties and are often blends.

Chenin Blanc/ Viognier

One of the things I look forward to every summer is the optimism everyone has, looking forward to the months ahead - the long evenings, the warmer weather, the smell of cut grass, fruits and flowers in the hedgerows etc.

(Unless of course you are cursed with hayfever when summer is your living nightmare!)

A great white to enjoy this summer is a Chenin Blanc/ Viognier blend, which is special for its own arrangement of unique aromas. On its own, Viognier is all about peaches coupled with flora. Chenin Blanc is just so diverse. It can range from bone dry to liquid honey and everything in between. South African producers have worked hard to make their Chenin attractive to the international market over the past decade and now their wines are among the great values of the white wine world today. If you want big value on a budget, choose a Chenin. The fun is finding those that are right for summer. Treat yourself during the summer months and try some different ones folks!

WITH THE SUMMER ON IT’S WAY, IT IS TIME TO DUST OF THE BARBECUE AND START THINKING ABOUT EATING ALFRESCO. FOR ME BARBECUING IS SO MUCH MORE THAN BURNT SAUSAGES AND UNDERCOOKED CHICKEN WINGS. JUST ABOUT ANYTHING CAN BE COOKED ON A BARBECUE AND ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ALTERNATIVE DISHES IS THIS MUSSELS IN A BAG, ONE OF THE DISHES FROM OUR POPULAR BARBECUE COOKING COURSES. IT IS IDEAL TO THROW ON THE BARBECUE WHILST YOUR GUESTS ARRIVE TO GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO START WITH. SERVE WITH CRUSTY BREAD (WHICH I LIGHTLY TOAST ON THE BARBECUE) AND A JAR OF HARTY’S GINGER PEPPER JELLY TO DOLLOP ON TOP.

INGREDIENTS 1 kg mussels, cleaned and de-bearded 4 tbsp Olive oil ½ glass white wine Salt and pepper 4 garlic cloves, peeled and finely sliced 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley Crusty bread to serve Harty’s ginger pepper jelly to serve

Place a large sheet of tin foil on your work bench.

Place another sheet on top of the first sheet so that you have two layers of foil.

Scrunch up the sides of the foil slightly and place the mussels in the foil.

Drizzle with a little olive oil and the wine. Season with salt and pepper and scatter over the garlic.

“The Quarry” by Iain Banks

“The Quarry” by Iain Banks, is a strange and fantastic book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The story follows Kit, a socially awkward eighteen-year-old living with his terminally ill father. As his father’s circle of friend gather for one last meeting, Kit discovers a hidden motive. They are searching for a videotape that could destroy all of their shiny reputations. This is a book that gives us a mixed view of the shallow, self-centred nature of all human beings, the inevitability of our demise, and what it is like to be so close to this slow process of death.

“Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk is a book that will change your outlook on society, for better or for worse! Palahniuk’s unique narrative style mixes dark humour with all of the uncomfortable truths about the society that we live in. He tells us the fast-paced, highly unusual tale through an unnamed narrator. Influenced by the anarchic and brilliant Tyler Durden, the narrator leaves his sheltered, conformist lifestyle behind, to become a key member of the Fight Club and inflict chaos upon our plastic society full of sheep-people. A short read, “Fight Club” will take you hardly any time to read, but will keep you on the edge of your seat for the whole adrenaline-fuelled ride.

“Wild Abandon” by Joe Dunthorne “Wild Abandon” by Joe Dunthorne is a very quirky and unique read, for its dark humour and sharp, funny narrative style. Following Kate, a vegetarian youth living in a community of healthy, alternative, self-sufficient people, this story is maybe the only of its kind. I found it to be a very entertaining story, balancing between sensitivity and complete and utter off-beat comedy, balanced with tales of weird and wonderful human beings. I would recommend this book for both young teenagers and adults, for its wit and its individuality. The characters are wonderfully real, and the plot, while strange, is somehow appealing to people of all walks of life.

“Sing You Home” by Jodi Picoult “Sing You Home” by Jodi Picoult, is a rare diamond of a book that makes the reader think, and constantly challenges all the views you ever thought you were positive about. Picoult tackles many issues in this richly descriptive and tightly-plotted masterpiece, including the issues faced by the LGBT community. This thought-provoking, powerful, and emotionallyevocative tale tells the story of Zoe, a music therapist, and her on-going struggles, including a divorce, a new relationship that is passionate but fraught with complications; and a custody battle for children that may never be born. This is a page-turner that will keep you reading ‘til the last page is turned, and that I recommend for both teenagers and adults alike.

Election Special In these times do you find it hard to convince people on the doorstep that you are the right choice?

I have to say to date we have been getting a very positive response on the doorstep. I am well known locally as a voluntary community activist and so that track record has meant that people recognise that I am not in politics for the sake of it or for any personal gain. I am willing to engage in the political process in order to effect positive changes for all of us in our communities

Do you feel as a woman in politics its more difficult for you is there still the old perception it’s a man’s world?

Tell us about Norma Moriarty the politician and how you decided to run for the local elections this year?

I was approached by FF following the decision of Cllr Paul O’Donoghue not to contest this election.

I considered this offer an opportunity to further the projects and community based activities I have been involved in for almost 20 years.

Therefore I agreed to accept the offer.

Have you a family history in politics?

My family has always been interested in politics and current affairs, many members of the family worked with campaigns for various candidates over the years. However I am the first member of the family to stand for election.

I’ve been involved in so many committees and organisations over the years many of which have been male dominated, but nonetheless we got the work done. I do think it’s always better to have diversity in all sectors of life and especially in decision making bodies like Local Authorities. To be honest I believe I was offered this opportunity largely because I am a woman and one who is currently involved on the ground on community issues. FF and in fairness all other political parties are making efforts to increase the number of women in politics. I’m certain when it came to selecting a candidate then one of the items on the wish list was gender. However I do not believe that gender is a basis for voting for or against a person. Yet I do support the policy of encouraging greater gender balance and diversity across the board. We want our public representatives to accurately reflect us and effectively serve us

You are based in Waterville so as a small community that is a distance from main hospitals etc do the people in your area rely on you more for support in the community.

Waterville is like many such communities in the South & West LEA, it has been hard hit by emigration and is reliant on seasonal employment. Of late our core services like, Garda cover, Ambulance cover, Post Office services, and now a threat to the LEADER fund has meant that people feel that central government want to shut down rural and peripheral communities like ours. If our areas are to be properly represented then it will mean electing people from those areas to voice clearly and articulately the very real fears and concerns we have. Simply put we know best ourselves what it is we need and so we must ensure that we assert our right to a fair deal by articulating that argument clearly where decisions are made.

Tell us a bit about Norma the Lady at home, are you involved in activities, what do you do the chill out, if you have time for that?

I am a sports enthusiast and like most others follow Football and Hurling. Being from a coastal community I have always been involved in Rowing and we are delighted to be hosting for the second time the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Waterville from Aug 15th to 17th next. I love reading and film and am always trying to find time to catch up on new releases.

I’m never idle and that’s the way I like it.

Election Special their best, the best they can possibly do and I certainly have done that. So as to your question, no, it is not difficult, I engage well with people and they with me.

I work as a local representative on a full time basis, I do not have another job, this is my job, I gave up my job to concentrate fully on my committeemen’s and people appreciate that.

Tell us about Gillian Wharton Slattery, the politician and why you decided to get into politics?

I was always very active in the community; I enjoyed helping people and getting things done. I had canvassed with many of my party colleagues over the years and was very proud of the work they did as local representatives. I worked as a legal secretary for Miriam McGill cuddy, at the time Miriam was a Councillor and held the position of Mayor also. I witnessed firsthand how much she engaged with the community as a Councillor. In 2008 Dick Spring asked me if I would run in the 2009 local elections and after little thought I agreed.

It was to be fair a huge question and one I did put much thought into. It was a monumental step for me. One however I do not regret, if there is any regret it is that I did not take the plunge sooner.

Have you a family history in politics?

I am the first person in my family to venture into politics; I suppose history has to start somewhere! Thankfully I had the full support of my family and they have all continued to support me. I had an extremely good relationship with my mother who died suddenly in 1996, of all the people I would love to have had around on the day I was elected was her. I know she would be very proud of me

In these times do you find it hard to convince people on the doorstep that you are the right choice?

It is often difficult to gauge what people are really thinking on the doorstep. I have got a lot of support and hope the goodwill directed towards me will convert to votes on the day. I do not have any difficulty as a local representative knocking on doors as I know I have given it my all, my heart and soul over the past five years. I am not afraid to work hard, not afraid to bring issues to the table that others may not want to. I speak to people about my involvement with Tidy Towns and they know that I am out with the brush and the litter picker and not afraid to get my hands dirty. Many people have congratulated me on bringing the Marriage Equality Motion before Council last year and appreciate my involvement with minority groups. People appreciate those who work hard, that do

Do you feel as a woman in politics its more difficult for you is there still the old perception it’s a man’s world?

There is still, in my humble opinion the perception that it is a man’s world and in some ways it is. That however has to change and is albeit in a small way, changing. I would love to see more women having the courage of their convictions and belief in them. It’s not easy putting yourself out there and going before the people, but we mustn’t assume that everything is pitted against us, because it’s not. Women can be dynamic in politics. We see things differently and have empathy with certain issues. We are by nature nurturers and this helps us in discussing and debating issues such as inequality, abortion, difficulties in childcare, women’s issues such as violence against women, household budgeting – while I appreciate that men too play a role in these issues, women are in the main those who run the family home and in many cases carry the silent burdens. Women and politics can be a difficult mix particularly for those with a young family. Most meetings are held in the evenings and that is a time when family life is at its busiest. It is true to say that there is no true democracy without the full participation of women in politics. That is why it is very important that the electorate return women to the council table in the coming elections. I have to say though that in my five years in office my male colleagues have been very respectful and fair and have treated me as an equal – there’s just not enough of us!

You are based in Tralee and would be popular in the area; do you find Tralee has changed since you began your term in the council?

Tralee has certainly changed; there is no question about that. It has changed for the good and the not so good. We have seen a lot of investment is certain areas. We have seen such improvements as the Wetland Centre being built which is a huge tourism attraction for the town but it also puts us ahead in the conservation stakes. The demise of the old Chamber of Commerce and the establishment of the new vibrant Tralee Chamber Alliance.

We have seen a new Emergency Department at Kerry General Hospital, a new Endoscopy Unit, and Tralee Nursing Unit. Console has opened a unit here in Tralee, sadly and tragically there was a need for it. The new bypass has been a tremendous investment to

our town as has the Tralee to Fenit Walkway, though still under construction these are just a few to mention. Of course I realise that there is a long way to go before we are fully back on our feet but it is heartening to see so many SME’s opening up in our area.

What can you do for the people that vote for you if you are elected?

Should I be fortunate to be re-elected I can assure the public that I will continue to work as hard as I have done over the past five year.

This is my full time job. When I was co-opted to Kerry County Council in 2011, having won a seat in Tralee Town Council in 2009 I gave up my job as legal secretary to concentrate fully on my position as a Town and County Councillor. I am involved in many groups and organisations and have worked hard within all for them for the betterment of my community.

I am not afraid to put my head above the parapet and will represent my constituents to the best of my ability. I am a good communicator and I engage well with people.

I am one of the few councillors that work with marginal groups and will continue to do so. I will liaise with my colleagues in Government to ensure that everyone has a decent roof over their heads and try where possible to decrease the ever growing housing need in our community. As a local representative I will work hard for those I represent and will not, as in the past be found wanting when it comes to putting my shoulder to the wheel.

Tell us a bit about Gillian at home, are you involved in activities, what do you do the chill out, if you have time for that?

I suppose it’s fair to say that my job is a seven day a week job. Sometimes it can be very demanding and can be hard to switch off, even when I am off. I have over the past 2 years in particular learned to put up boundaries for myself and take time out. It is essential to do this, as it is in any job or profession. We cannot be all things to all people all of the time. My saving grace is nature; it must come from my farming upbringing in Ballyseedy. I find there is a cure and a therapy in nature, it heals the soul and lightens the heart and is tremendous for ones mental well being. In my down time I am a solitary soul at heart and like to take to the mountains or the beach for long walks with my camera. I also like to write and who knows someday I may publish some of what I have written, that is for another day!

Having said that I love the company of people, their energy feds me. I love to spend time with family and friends and share a laugh and good food. I have been fortunate in life that I am not afraid of my own company and when not with others I do like to spend time with me. I believe that if we can sit with ourselves and not be afraid we can tackle anything.
