LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Irish Citizenship Amin has been living in Ireland legally for five years and she is anxious to obtain her Irish Citizenship. She is wondering what is involved in the application and what she will need to show to be successful in the application.

Irish citizenship is formal recognition of being part of the Irish Community at home and abroad. It also gives the benefit of being an EU citizen. One of the main reasons people make this application is to make it easier to travel in and out of Ireland and around the European Union.

Becoming an Irish Citizen gives rights to hold an Irish passport, rights under the Irish Constitution 1937 as amended, right to vote in an Irish Election and consular and diplomatic assistance abroad.

There are various ways that one could become an Irish Citizen e.g. by birth/descent, naturalization and being a spouse of an Irish Citizen. Amina having lived here legally five years would go the naturalization route, which involves completing a form and sending on certain information. Any convictions need to be disclosed and three referees need to be obtained. Evidence of identity will be produced as well as all the addresses that one lived at in Ireland.

Applications are decided by the Minister for Justice and Equality who has absolute discretion as to whether or not to grant the citizenship.

One must fulfill the following criteria Be 18 years or older or be a minor born in the State (from 1 January 2005) and Be of good character - the Garda Síochána will be asked to provide a report about your background. Any criminal record or ongoing proceedings will be taken into consideration by the Minister for Justice and Equality in deciding whether or not to grant naturalisation.

Have had a period of 365 days (1 year) continuous reckonable residence in the State immediately before the date of your application for naturalisation and, during the 8 years preceding that, have had a total reckonable residence in the State amounting to 1,460 days (4 years). Altogether you must have 5 years (5 x 365 days) reckonable residence out of the last 9 years and Intend in good faith to continue to reside in the State after naturalisation and Make a declaration of fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the State, and undertake to observe the laws of the State and respect its democratic values.

Normally, when you apply for naturalisation you must be supporting yourself and your dependants while living in Ireland The application fee is €175 Law Fun: Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

NEW DIRECTOR OF FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING APPOINTED TO KERRY EDUCATION AND TRAINING BOARD Kerry Education and Training Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Owen O’Donnell as the new Director of Further Education and Training with Kerry Education and Training Board.

The Education and Training sector has been through a period of restructuring in recent years with the establishment of 16 Education and Training Boards on July 1st 2013. As part of this restructuring process Director of Further Education and Training posts were sanctioned for all Education and Training Boards. Owen was previously employed with Kerry Education and Training Board as the Manager of Kerry ETB Training Centre, Monavalley, Tralee. In his new role Owen will have responsibility for leading and managing the very extensive Further Education and Training Programme currently being delivered by Kerry Education and Training Board.

Owen brings a vast level of experience to the position having previously been employed as a Lecturer with Sligo Institute of Technology, an Instructor with Cork Training Centre, Bishopstown, Cork (formerly FÁS Training Centre), National Skills Expert / Examiner in CNC Machining & Mould Making and Assistant Manager and Area Training Manager of Kerry ETB Training Centre (formerly FÁS Training Centre), Monavalley, Tralee.

“I am delighted to be appointed to the position of Director of Further Education and Training with Kerry ETB. This is a new role within the education and training sector and I look forward to working with staff of the ETB Further Education and Training Team and external partners in building upon the excellent record of Kerry ETB as a provider of quality Education and Training programmes in the years ahead” said Owen.

2. Interact Interact is a club for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with others in their community or school. Interact club members have fun while carrying out service projects and learning about the world. Interact clubs organize at least two service projects a year: one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding.

3. Rotaract Rotaract brings together people ages 18-30 in universities and communities worldwide to organize service activities, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun.

4. RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership development program run by Rotary. While participants can be any age, most events focus on secondary school students, university students, or young professionals. RYLA events are typically 3–10 days long and include presentations, activities, and workshops that cover a variety of topics.

It was first staged on Banna Beach as part of the Féile Fáilte (Casement Project) in July. This moving and compelling dance piece was performed to rapturous applause at its premiere - don’t miss its second showing! There is also another software package called VNC but you must have some knowledge of IP Address..

What is the best TV combo box with a 7 day guide?

At the moment there is no reliable combo box that has a 7 day guide without upgrading the firmware .You can get a Sab combo box installed at the moment and it seems to be very reliable. Also if you connect it to the internet you can update the satellite channel list . From what I hear there are talks of bringing out a new box called Saorview Connect. I have not seen any specifications at the moment but there are talks of it having a 7 day guide for both satellite and terrestrial and a recording feature. No release date has been set.

Lee Strand welcomed the 2016 Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney, to the launch of the Lee Strand Homework Journals this week at the Lee Strand milk plant in Ballymullen, Tralee. This year over 10,000 Lee Strand hardback homework journals will be distributed to National School pupils in Kerry, West Limerick and North Cork.

The specially designed homework journals valued at €4.50 each are printed in full colour and include a hardback cover for extra durability in pupils’ school bags. The homework journals are printed in English and Irish with over 140 pages and include: a Weekly Diary, where pupils can record their homework each day; a Timetable to record classes & activities; a Tables Book featuring addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; Healthy Eating Tips; Irish Culture & Heritage; Spelling & Grammar; Teacher & Parent Note Forms; Homework Tips for Pupils and Parents, plus lots more…

Speaking at the launch of the Lee Strand Homework Journals, John O’Sullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand said “This is the fifth year Lee Strand is offering homework journals to National School pupils in Kerry, West Limerick and North Cork. Lee Strand takes great pride in supporting the local community and what better way to support our community than by supporting our local schools. Schools can avail of the homework journals by simply collecting mascots from Lee Strand packs. We have received very positive feedback from principals, teachers and parents on the homework journals as this is one less expense for parents to incur when their children return to school. The homework journal not only records pupils’ homework it is also filled with lots of interesting and educational material for pupils and teachers to enjoy in the classroom.”

MARGARET DRIVES AWAY FROM LOUIS!

Following a 12 week draw to celebrate the opening of their new TOP Oil service station in Caherslee, Byrnes SPAR gave one lucky lady a pleasant surprise last Saturday afternoon when she drove away with a Brand new Hyundai i10 Car. Margaret Carmody from Ardfert was one of 12 Finalists in the “Win a Car with Byrnes SPAR competition which came to a close last Saturday with a family fun day in Caherslee. There was a fantastic party atmosphere in Caherslee with family and friends gathered to cheer on the 12 Finalists. Francis Jones of Radio Kerry presented his Saturday Lunchtime show from Byrnes Spar and drew the winning ticket. “We have been overwhelmed with the response from the public since we opened our new store in Caherslee a few months ago “ said owner Louis Byrne .”We are delighted for Margaret and a big thank you to all our customers and semi-finalists who have supported us “ Happy Motoring to Margaret & her husband Gerard.

STACKS ‘STRICTLY’ SHAKES THE DOME!

Back to School Haircuts This week we are going to try and help you through this dreaded time of year…back to school. We want to give your child a style that is easy to manage and maintain on those busy morning, while also keeping him on trend.

1. Side part - This has remained a popular haircut over the last number of years. We almost recommend it 99% of the time as a fashionable and manageable cut.

At the interval of the Austin Stacks GAA Club Connolly Park,Tralee The Kerry School Performing Arts students performed the the supervision of Aidan O’Carroll.

2. The Fade - This is a clean neat cut that is very low maintenance. You can go short without it looking too short as the sides can be a few numbers up from the nape of the neck.

3. Spiked up fringe - The shorter cropped look on the top is back in. This look is great with most hair types with the exception of curly hair. It is easy to style and very low maintenance. It suits almost all face shapes.

4. French crop - This is easily becoming one of the most popular cuts for this year and next year. It is a shorter style so you don’t need much hair to begin with. It is a very flexible haircut which suits most face shapes with the exception of round faces. This cut also requires fewer trips to the barber, because the style of the cut is short and choppy with nicely tapered edges.

Headlice This is a problem every September and we have a few ways you can try and prevent your child from getting lice.

• Make sure your kids don’t share brushes, hats and coats as they are home to lice and eggs.

• Ask your child to avoid games that will involve them playing head to head.

• You can buy a lice repellent spray in your pharmacy.

Just spray it on your child’s head before school.

Answer You should have been given a pay slip by your employer when you were paid. Your pay slip can be provided to you either in electronic format or in hard copy. Under the Payment of Wages Act 1991 all employees have the right to a pay slip which shows the gross pay and details of all deductions. A pay slip is essentially a written statement from the employer to the employee that outlines the total pay before tax and all details of any deductions from pay.

Certain deductions from pay are allowed under the Act. They include deductions that are required by law, for example, tax (PAYE), Universal Social Charge (USC) and social insurance (PRSI). Deductions provided for in your contract of employment, such as occupational pension contributions, are also allowed.

You should ask your employer for pay slips for the three weeks that you have already worked. If your employer fails to give you those pay slips and continues to pay you without giving you a pay slip, you may make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). To do this, you make a complaint under the Payment of Wages Act using the online complaint form available on the WRC website, workplacerelations.ie.

The Workplace Relations Commission also provides information on your rights and entitlements under employment legislation. For further information about your employment rights on pay slips and deductions from wages, you can contact its Information and Customer Service at Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or through the website, workplacerelations.ie.

THE MOUNT EAGLE WIND FARM COMMUNITY FUND IS RE-LAUNCHING

ESB is pleased to announce the third round of funding for communities in the locality of Mount Eagle Wind Farm, Co. Kerry. The 2016 fund, will open to receive applications from Thursday, 1st September until the deadline of Thursday, 27th October. The fund enables ESB to provide financial support to local community and voluntary organisations, helping them to deliver beneficial projects and initiatives in proximity of the wind farm. These include, but are not limited to; registered charities, community development groups, Tidy Town committees, sports and recreation clubs, and primary and secondary schools.

To be eligible for the fund, a project must fall under one of the following thematic areas: Sports and Recreation, Health and Wellbeing, Environment and Conservation, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, Culture and Heritage, Education, Children and Young People, and Elderly People.

Stakeholder Officer at ESB, Paul Lally, commented: “ESB has always been a partner to communities, through the delivery of safe and reliable power to the people of Ireland. But every year, we strengthen this bond by supporting community initiatives through our Energy for Generations Fund, and 12 local Wind Farm Community Funds. This fund in particular, has run to great success over the past two years with a total of nine projects funded to date.”

If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist, it’s one day, pay a bit extra for better quality.

On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit.

HAVE A TRIAL

If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT. There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability.

LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/SUGGESTIONS

They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them.

If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return.

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK AND YOU’RE ALL RECOVERED AFTER THE ROSE OF TRALEE. I CAME DOWN FOR MIDNIGHT MADNESS AND QUITE LITERALLY MADE UP FOR MISSING THE REST OF IT. Anyway, back to Fitness! This week it’s 3 weeks until my holiday to Ayia Napa! As I already talked about how to stay on track while on holidays I thought I would talk about how to get back on track after a holiday/wedding/festival/any other event.

ACCOUNTABILITY – Start making yourself aware of all your fitness and dietary habits by tracking them. Get back into tracking with MyFitness Pal which is sobering as well as addictive! Also research has proven again and again that people who track their eating are the biggest losers, literally.

ASSES THE DAMAGE - That’s right…get. on. the. scale. It may be painful to see that you have gained a few pounds, but you need to know what you are dealing with. On the other hand, you might find that you didn’t do as much damage as you think. You probably will not see a dramatic weight gain after only one week. Either way, you need to be realistic about what your body needs to do now. So just weigh yourself and get it over with. I weigh myself everyday, no matter what I did the day before and it seems to be working a treat!

LET IT GO - If you had a lazy holiday or a great celebration or a reunion with friends, you should not feel bad about it. You should feel really good about what you have done for yourself by putting your needs first for a change. Any guilt or regret you are feeling should be pushed out the window now. You are actually lucky because you are most likely coming back with a fresh attitude and a renewed sense of your goals. So literally let it go…I’m serious…bend down and scoop your arms up really big, walk over to a window, and throw all that guilt away. What’s done is done.

ORGANIZE YOUR MORNING – Prepare everything the night before. Lay out your workout gear and pack your gym bag. Plan your meals and if possible, have them prepped and waiting for you.

SET GOALS – Pick a big event in your near future, a reunion or a birthday and set a goal. Or pick a road race and start training for it.

STAY PSYCHED – If you find yourself losing interest in staying on track, reward yourself with a massage or a new pair of running shoes. New lycra has magical powers that wear off after 3 washes.

AIM FOR DAILY EXERCISE – Of course there will be days where you miss it but if you aim for it every day and put it on your calendar you will at least end up with a solid 4 or 5 days of movement.

BLACKBERRY-BAY LEAF JAM

BLACKBERRY-CANTALOUPE MELON SALAD

INGREDIENTS • • • • •

3 pounds fresh blackberries 4 1/2 cups sugar Zest of 1 lemon, plus 4 1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice Pinch of coarse salt 1 or 2 dried bay leaves

METHOD 1. Place a few small plates in the freezer. Stir together berries, sugar, lemon zest and juice, salt, and bay leaves in a large, heavy stockpot. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar and mashing lightly with a potato masher. Skim foam from surface. Cook, stirring more frequently as jam thickens, until it is the consistency of very loose jelly, 10 to 11 minutes. Remove pot from heat.

2. Press about half of the jam through a medium sieve; discard seeds. Return strained jam to pot, and stir until combined. Return to a boil.

3. Remove a plate from freezer, and drop a spoonful of jam on it. Return to freezer for 1 to 2 minutes, then gently nudge edge of jam with a finger. If jam is ready, it should hold its shape. If jam is too thin and spreads out, return to a boil, testing every minute, until done. Remove bay leaves, and discard. Spoon hot jam into hot sterilized jars, and cover immediately with sterilized lids

2 cups blackberries 1/2 cantaloupe melon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon grated peeled fresh ginger 1/2 teaspoon grated lime zest plus 1 tablespoon juice 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh mint leaves

METHOD In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except mint. Cover and let stand 30 minutes (or refrigerate, up to 2 days). Stir in mint just before serving

A wealthy lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate.

He asked one man, “Why are you eating grass?” “We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.”

“Well then, you can come with me to my house and I’ll feed you,” the lawyer said.

TORQUING CARS! PERSONALISED CAR NUMBER PLATES PROVING AS GOOD INVESTMENT AS ‘WINE, GOLD OR HARRY POTTER FIRST EDITION’ Sales of UK personalised car number plates are at a record high - proving as good an investment as ‘fine wine, gold or a Harry Potter first edition’.

While once viewed as the essential status symbol addition for a yuppie city banker’s Porsche they are now seen as a ‘prudent’ purchase which could increase in value.

Drivers’ enthusiasm to show off the size of their wallet is good for the country too - as sales helped raise a record £102 million for the Treasury (excluding VAT).

Eric Craggs, chairman of the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association says: “It’s a brilliant investment. Definitely as good as wine, gold and Harry Potter first editions but you have got to know what you are doing.”

He spotted back in 1991 they were the “Crown Jewels of the future” - and as the former owner of Nationalnumbers.co.uk he has advised people on making investments.

“If you bought ‘59 JM’ a few years ago it would have cost you £5-6,000, it’s already worth £12,000 and I guarantee, as best you can with these things, in two years time it’ll be worth £24,000 and in five years time £40,000,” he adds.

The UK DVLA says almost 335,000 registrations were sold in the last year - more than four times the figure in the mid-Nineties.

The biggest went for £180,000 in May last year - for KR15 HNA - which was a new British record for the most expensive current style personalised registration plate.

CHARGING ‘ON HOLD’ AS ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES SLIDE

Plans to bring in charges for electric vehicles remain ‘on hold’. The ESB was to have brought in charging for some owners from last January but that was postponed.

A spokesman recently told Independent Motors: “We have completed the EV (electric vehicle) Pilot Project and are awaiting a decision from the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER). In the meantime, we are continuing to make charging available for all EV customers at no cost.

We are also continuing to provide a free home charger to qualifying purchasers of a new EV.” CER, the country’s independent energy regulator, have not yet responded to our queries at time of going to press.

Initially there were concerns new customers would have to pay €16.99 a month for unlimited access to low-speed one-phase charging points. It was also announced that all customers would pay an extra 30c a minute on the fast charging points. Neither has transpired. Charging now would be bad news for a sector where sales have dipped.

SIMI statistics show EV sales are down 18pc in the first eight months of the year - from 435 in 2015 to 355. Nissan’s Leaf is by far the biggest selling EV on the market with 321 registered to date. It is followed by the BMW i3 and Renault Zoe on 13 each. Tesla’s Model S has six registrations.(Independent Motoring )

The FordFest event is one of the largest of its type in the country and is expected to attract more than 1,700 classic and modern Fords. The drag strip at the famous Santa Pod venue will be active, as will the have-a-go drift trikes – described by organisers as “massively entertaining”.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY LOOKS TO THE FUTURE: Last Sunday seems a bit ago now, although maybe not for the Kerry players who I am sure are still hurting after their defeat to Dublin. So I am not going to re hash the game as it is now time to look to the future.

Firstly that future is bright. We already have the Kerry Juniors with their All Ireland title in the trophy cabinet. The minors have been superb all year and while they won’t take Galway for granted they will be favourites to win. They are a seriously talented bunch of players and their displays have shown this.

So where do the Kerry seniors go from here.

Firstly every member of the Kerry team that were involved last Sunday can hold their heads up high as they left it all on the field. If some of these players go now they will go in the knowledge that they have given hours and years of pleasure to Kerry fans.

The other question is will the Kerry management stay on. And who would be a manager? Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his back room team were questioned in the run up to the game as to how well they manage things from the side line. And on Sunday they got most of the calls right.

Probably the big one was sending on of Marc O’Shea and taking off of Paul Geaney. Dublin had taken off McAuley and put on Eoin O’Gara, giving them essentially a 7th forward. From a Kerry point of view that would tie up Aidan O’Mahony who was having an excellent day as sweeper. So Marc came on to shore up things”.

The question was who to take off? Remember Kerry had already put on four attackers. So the management must have felt that they had enough legs up front to still get scores (and with a bit of luck they could have). The big worry was Dublin’s ability to push on in the final 10 minutes. The statistic is staggering that in the games from the 2013 All Ireland semi-final to up to last Sunday’s final whistle Dublin outscored Kerry 4-15 to 0-06 points –a huge gap that needs to be seriously looked at and sorted.

So it was probably a choice between Geaney and Colm Cooper. And which ever-way it went there would be questions. You can hear the calls Terrace Talk etc saying “How did they take off Colm Cooper, arguably Kerry’s best ever forward!”.

But all that is being a playing quarter back on Monday morning where everything is easy in hindsight.

The fact is that Eamonn and his staff got the vast majority of the calls right and I think they should get another year. And if they want it I suspect that theirs will be the only name put forward by the County Board Officers for ratification. I would say that some thought should be given to looking for their successor and having them involved in some role in the coming year to secure a smooth transition. It will

be a rebuilding process on the field so having things running smoothly off the field over the next few seasons will be vital.

BACK TO NORMAL AT THE TRACK AFTER THE ROSES: The Sunday Rose of Tralee meeting was another huge success at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium. It is a great chance for people to meet the Roses who enjoy the fun of the track.

Following all the excitement of the Festival is back to normal at the track this week.

On Friday night there is the semi-finals of the Gain Dog Foods A1 525 yards followed by a graded card on Saturday night. Starting on September 10th is the Steve Kennedy Memorial A5 confined 525 yards.

CRICKETERS HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH TRIP TO TIPP: The North Kerry Cricket Club travelled to Ballyeighan to face Tipperary in Munster’s Division 2. Batting first Tipperary got off to a flying start, helped by several missed catches by the Kerry players. The hosts made 100 for 2 after 20 overs.

North Kerry’s bowlers took a grip of the game after the break with Paul Wyer taking 2 for 25, Godwin Jepadas 2 for 30 while Ali Shah, Eddie Garczynski, Umar Seithi and Prince Thomas all took wickets to leave Tipperary on 148 all out in the 33rd over. Two excellent catches by Godwin helped Kerry to set a total they felt confident chasing.

In reply Kerry were helped by a mixed bowling display from their hosts who conceded a lot of wide balls mixed with some good deliveries.

Eddie Garczynski anchored the innings with a patient 21 but a nervous finish was on the cards as North Kerry nudged their way to the total. With the last pair at the wicket it was left to Man of the Match Godwin Jepadas to strike a six in the final over to give the North Kerry players a great win.

Moylan t20 Cup: The local t20 tournament has been rebranded The Moylan t20 Cup, in honour of Denis Moylan, one of the cricket legends in Kerry. This year favourites Tralee Tigers took on new comes Kerry County Council and it was KCC that took the title in a surprise win. They put up a score of 134. Tigers got to 110 for 7 and had 3 overs to find the 25 runs needed to win. However they needed 9 runs from the last over but Shafique was caught on the boundary to wrap up the win. Mick Sealy (KCC) was named Man of the Match.

While the Kingdom were losing to Dublin in Croke Park a side from the capital were also defeating a Kerry side as Cabinteely defeated the u17’s 3-0. This score probably flattered the side from the capital and they scored twice mid-

way through the first half. The first came from a tough hand ball call after the first free kick hit the wall. They scored from the second free kick and then doubled their lead when another free kick was flicked home.

Kerry tried hard to get back and by the end of the first half had hit the post and crossbar and were unlucky with a number of other efforts.

Kevin Williams in particular was unlucky on the stroke of half time when an excellent turn took 3 Cabinteely defenders out of the game only to see his curling effort come off the outside of the post.

Cabinteely wrapped up the win with a goal from a corner early in the second half as Kerry still look for their third win. They are away to Cobh Ramblers this Sunday.

KDL BACK UP AND RUNNING: The Kerry District League got back in action last weekend as the 2016/2017 season began.

Dingle Bay Rovers were compared to Leicester City when they won the Premier Division last season. And that similarity continued when they lost their first game of the new season, going down to Castleisland. Dingle Bay face a big game this weekend when they welcome Park United of the AUL to Gallarus for the first round of the Keane’s Jewellers Munster League Champions Trophy.

We will keep an eye on all how the Tralee sides are doing during the season and unfortunately Mitchels Avenue B, who were the first side in action, went down 1-0 to Ballyheigue Athletic B. This Weekend in the KDL: Looking from a Tralee point of view Mitchels Avenue are the first town side in action as they take on Ballyheigue Athletic at Mounthawk Park at 7pm this tonight, Friday night.

On Sunday in Denny Premier B Classic FC are at home to Castleisland B in Mounthawk at 11.30am while in Division 2 two Tralee sides play in Mounthawk Park on Sunday afternoon.

At 2.30pm Tralee Bay FC take on Clanmaurice FC while Abhainn Li face Mitchels Avenue B on the grass pitch.

There is also a game on Monday evening when Tralee Celtic take on Ballyhar Dynamos at Mounthawk at 7.30pm.

KERRY CREWS DO WELL IN THE WEST: The Galway Stages Summer Rally is Round 4 of Top Part West Coast Rally Championship with Clare and the Banna Stages to come. As always there were a large number of Kerry crews in action.

The highest placed Kerry finisher was Shane Buckley who was calling the notes for West Cork’s Daniel Cronin and they were 7th overall in their Mitsubishi Evo and were the winners of Class 20.

Vincent O’Shea and Cavan’s Sean Bruton are having a very good championship and are in the top 10. Here they took 13th place and 4th in their Class, Class 14 in the Ford Escort.

Mike Quinn and Limerick’s Donal Balfe were their usual consistent selves finishing inside the top 20. They were 19th on General Classification and were 6th in Class 14.

Tim Enright and Stephen Buckley were 24th overall in their Ford Escort Mark 2 and were 6th in Class 24. One place behind them were Ken O’Neill and Johnny Hickey. They also won Class 3 in their Ford Puma S16.

Mike Cleary was calling the notes for Cork’s Pat Aherne and they took 40th and 7th in Class 13 while Keith O’Mahoney was also on the notes.

He was alongside Donegal’s Barry Doogan in the Honda Civic and they were 66th and 10th in Class 11F. The rally was won by Niall Maguire and James

TRALEE WARRIORS BRINGING TOP LEVEL BASKETBALL BACK TO TRALEE: Fans of basketball in Tralee are getting excited about the possibility of top level of the sport coming back to the town. Tralee Warriors have been granted a licence by Basketball Ireland and with the fixtures released it could be an exciting time for lovers of the hoops.

According to the fixture list Warriors will travel away for their first game when they are set to face UCC Demons on Friday September 23rd.

Their first game at home is set to be on Saturday October 1st when Belfast Star will be the visitors to the town.

The question of where that home venue will be is still to be announced but presumably it will be either Mercy Mounthawk Gym or the Sports Complex. It is expected that Mark Bernsen will coach the squad and I would expect they will be looking for the likes of Kieran Donaghy to add experience to the squad. Basketball at the top level of the League is a major undertaking and also a costly one and it will be interesting to hear who the main sponsor will be. The Tralee Warriors are expected to be launched in the coming weeks.

PARNELLS NEWS: Hurl With Me: Tralee Parnells are looking for enthusiastic adults to participate in the Hurl With Me programme. This takes place on Friday’s from September 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th from 7 to 8.30pm in Caherslee. Details are on the clubs Facebook page.

The Big Hurling Blitz this weekend: The Parnells Big Hurling and Camogie Blitz takes place this Saturday, September 3rd at John Mitchels grounds. Everyone is invited to come along and watch the young players display their skills.

With the All Ireland Hurling final on Sunday this is a big weekend for the lovers of the sliothar.

In 2015 Tralee Parnells held the first of these Big Blitz days which was an enormous success and this year promises to be even better. With the cooperation of the county committees all the camogies players are free to take part. The club is also looking for any sports historians who might know of similar events that took place over the years. The club reckons that this Blitz will surely set the record for the most hurling ever played on a single day in Kerry!

Under 8’s: The u8’s had a very enjoyable evening in Causeway at the excellent North Kerry Blitz and despite missing some regular starters they played very well over the three games, winning two and narrowly losing the third game.

Under 15’s: Well done to the Kerry u15 hurling development squad who brought home the silverware from Clare following the recent Munster Hurling Competition. Parnell’s players Darragh Reen and Ruairi O’Sullivan were members of the successful squad.

Wellbeing: Clubs are asked to familiarise themselves with the HSE Wellbeing Campaign and the messages it enforces. It is part of the new National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and more information on the campaign can be found on www.yourmentalhealth.ie

CENTRA CHALLENGE FOR THE HURLING TEAMS: Centra have launched their ‘Bin Challenge’. This is open for any group together (no less than three) and pass a sliothar from person to person using your with your hurl and then flick it into a bin to complete the challenge. AUSTIN STACKS / LEE STRAND U13 TOURNAMENT: The Austin Stacks Hurling & Football Club/ Lee Strand Under 13 Invitational Football Tournament will take place in Connolly Park over the weekend 10/11th September 2016.

This prestigious competition began 31 years ago, when four teams took part. There are now 16 teams from all over Ireland participating, with a waiting list of clubs interested in being involved. The first team to win the tournament in 1986 was Austin Stacks, the home side have won the competition nine times in all.

The current holders of the Lee Strand Cup are Salthill/Knocknacarra of Galway, they defeated Austin Stacks in last year’s final and are bidding for a hat-trick of wins this year.

This year’s line-up is as follows: Kerry clubs Austin Stacks; An Gaeltacht; Churchill; John Mitchels; Killarney Legion; Kerins O’Rahillys; Na Gaeil. Other clubs - Ennistymon (Clare); Clontarf (Dublin); Ballyboden/St. Endas (Dublin); Na Piarsaigh (Cork); Naas (Kildare); Nemo Rangers (Cork); Cuala (Dublin); Salthill/Knocknacarra (Galway.).

MITCHELS TO DISPLAY THEIR TWINKLE TOES: John Mitchels are delighted to announce their First ever Strictly Come Dancing Competition.

This will be held in Ballygarry House Hotel on Sunday October 30th 2016 commencing at 8.00 p.m. with Doors opening at 7.00 p.m.

Twelve couples have been carefully selected and are currently in training for this momentus event under the experienced eye of Ms Laura Flaherty, Choreographer. The winning couple will be donating their prize money to a Charity of their choice.

John Mitchels club have secured the expertise of the following Judges to choose the overall winners on the night: Ms. Anne Gibson, Ms Jackie O’Mahony, Mr Tim Landers and Mr Michael Healy-Rae TD. Brian Hurley of Irish TV will act as MC for the evening.

John Mitchels are launching this event in their Ballyseedy Complex on Saturday September 3rd at 7.30 p.m and the money raised from Strictly will be used for the development of the Club at Juvenile and Senior level and also prize-money will be donated to a Charity chosen by the winning Dancers.

Further information will be issued shortly on the sale of Tickets for the event.

CAMOGIE NEWS: All the Camogie players are looking forward to the Tralee Parnells Big Blitz which takes place

this Saturday September 3rd at John Mitchels.

The u12 County League 5th round matches are taking place this week as is the u14 County League game between Tralee Parnells and Causeway.

The Kerry u14’s travelled to Borrisleigh to take part in the Orla McDonagh Blitz which has always been an excellent warm up tournament previously for the Kerry u14 teams.

Kerry defeated Waterford 3-4 to 2 goals, drawing with Limerick 2-1 to 1-4 before taking on Tipperary. They proved too strong for the Kerry girls but overall it was a very good outing for the team. The next outing for the girls is the All Ireland Blitz in Dublin next week. Special thanks to David Doyle, Michelle Costello, Eoin Lawlor, Richard McCluskey and Fiona Lawlor for looking after the team.

All those who took part in the Blitz in Kilmoyley really enjoyed the excellently ran event for the u8’s and u10’s. The u8’s training is now finished for the winter while the u10’s will train for a few more weeks.

Cillard are in the Limerick County Championship with the u13’s defeating Croagh Kilfinny 4-14 to 1-4. The u14’s, u16’s and minors also won.

JUNIOR CUPS: While the major GAA competitions get lots of coverage sometimes the Junior Cup can get a little lost. But they are down to the business end and in the Molyneaux Cup the prospect of an all Tralee final is no more! Austin Stacks lost out to Dr Crokes in the first semi-final. Kerins O’Rahillys took on Rathmore in mid-week in the other last 4 game and we will have the results next week.

There are no Tralee side’s left in the last 4 of the McElligott and Barrett Cups.

Charlie Kerins are away to Castlegregory in the quarter final of the Cahill Cup. ON THE GREEN’S: TRALEE: The 2016 Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney was on hand to present the prizes to the winners of the Bon Secours Hospital AM/AM. The winner was the team of Pat Prendeville, Des O’Donnell , Brian Hayes and Tom Henchy. In second place was Brian O’Leary, Laura Rafferty, Mary O’Donnell and Richard Rafferty. Third were the quarter of Conor Kilroy, Mike Stack, John Reen and Ger Teahon.

The Exchange with Ceann Sibeal, sponsored by the Tralee Town House, was won by Gene O’Donnell on 41 points. Second was Kieran O’Callaghan with Paddy O’Donoghue 3rd. The Best Gross went to Graham Spring and the 18+ handicap section to Mikie Galvin.

The Wednesday competition was sponsored by the Tankard Bar and Restaurant and here the winner was Patrick Stack on 40 points. Second was Paul Moriarty with Noel Walsh in 3rd and Des O’Donnell in 4th. The Best Gross went to Michael Coote with Martin Veldhoen taking the 18+ section.
