A warm welcome to our visitors.

We are back on track with summer in Whāingaroa after some challenging times. Once again we have put together a summer mag to introduce you to Raglan and the endless and diverse experiences we have to offer.

Over the year we have had the benefit of Ruby Gibbs from My Mental Health Toolbox sharing local mental health stories. On page 23 Ruby looks back insightfully at the series and has some sage advice for looking after ourselves this summer holiday period.

Enjoy and explore our seaside haven but please respect our home town and our environment that we go to great lengths to take care of by taking note of the information in this guide.

SUMMER VIBES IN WH Ā INGAROA

YOUR GUIDE TO SUMMER IN RAGLAN!

Summer is here and NIWA tells us that the temperatures for us Westies are likely to be warmer than average. More north-easterly winds and marine heatwave conditions will result in high heat and humidity – sounds like the tropics have come to Raglan.

In a nutshell it’s looking likely to be hot, humid, with normal or below normal rainfall.

With Covid loosening its grip on the country, Raglan businesses, events and festivals will be back in full swing.

Visitors to the town in summer increase the town’s population by around 300-400 per cent and whilst Covid has had an impact on this over the last few years, Whāingaroa is ready to welcome holidaymakers from around the country and world.

SUMMER DINING

From fine dining to takeaways, there’s plenty of options in Raglan for eating out.

Start the day with breakfast in town at The Shack with several versions of bacon and eggs on offer but there’s plenty of unusual but flavoursome offerings too, like the popular Chilli Crunch Rice.

If you’ve just come back from walking the dog on Ngarunui beach, stop in at Rockit where the dogs are welcome, there’s plenty of greenspace for the kids to play and the food is on-point.

After an early start in the surf nothing beats a bacon and egg roll and coffee from the Food Department in Raglan West.

Wyld is great for a brunch that will keep you going through to dinner. Their Hot Damn Chill Scram and Wainui Big Brekkie will rock your tastebuds and keep your puku full.

Serving the best burritos since forever is Roll Up – in Volcom Lane for Tex Mex eats and Bow Street for ice creams.

Relative newcomer, The Yard is serving up music in the evening and dining that will take you from brunch right through to a late-night burger.

For dining with a view, head to Orca for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the deck overlooking the harbour. Their seared ostrich is sure to tempt the adventurous foodie.

Relax under the old pōhutukawa tree outside La La Land and enjoy a delicious, sweet treat, coffee and hot chocolate.

For fusion Japanese kai that’s a treat to the tastebuds and the eye head to ULOs Kitchen. Dine in for the full ULOs experience of food, cocktails and music.

Park yourself in the courtyard at Geroge’s Beach Club and watch the sunset with some of the best pizzas in town. There’s plenty of scrumptious small and large plate options.

You can’t go past the Harbourview Hotel or The Raglan Club for good oldfashioned pub meals.

The Wharf Kitchen and Bar offers a primo view, a large selection of menu options and buy any meal and get one kids meal free – what’s not to like.

Looking to feed the family after a big day at the beach, there’s tasty fish and

chips at Jo’s Takeaways opposite the Papahua playground and Raglan Fish at the wharf.

For a selection of takeaways in town check out Raglan Fresh Fish, Ali’s Turkish Kebabs, Koochi Raglan, Pirate Pizza and Dukkas on Bow Street, and Aloha Sushi on Wallis Street

SOUNDSPLASH FESTIVAL

Soundsplash fetsival returns to Wainui Reserve in January for two days and two nights of live music featuring a multi-genre selection of international and local acts.

This will be a homecoming of sorts for Soundsplash who shifted venues to Mystery Creek last year to accommodate for pandemic restrictions.

“With the summer festival season just around the corner we are thrilled to be hosting Soundsplash back in Raglan for 2023.

“We have some super talented international & local artists that we have been working on this past year. We are really excited about Ocean Alley & Jordan Rakei and up and coming local artists,” said organiser Brian Ruawai.

SUMMERTIME LIVE GIGS

The Yot Club will continue to deliver live bands and DJs throughout the summer. Sunday Sessions is a must for excellent tunes spun by an awesome line-up of locals and imported DJsoutside from 6pm and inside from 10pm till 1am. Kick off your New Year with the legendary Greg Churchill and KRS3.

For atmospheric live music and acts, the Raglan Old School Arts Centre has Pōneke/Wellington art-rock trio Birdfeeder and stand-up comedy by seasoned comic, ex-professional dancer and cabaret dynamo Joana Joy (Banana Jolie) in January.

Don’t forget to check out local eateries turned venues, like The Yard and Harbour View Hotel, for a great line up of summer gigs too (see back page).

WHĀINGAROA TO-DO LIST

Bridal Veil Falls is an attractive easy walk, through native forest following the Pakoka River to the top of the Waireinga/Bridal Veil Falls. This section of track is designed for assisted wheelchair use and is suitable for children’s pushchairs.

Karioi Summit Track offers views as far south as Mt Taranaki, the Herangi Range and Pureora on a fine day.

Raglan Rock has a range of exhilarating tours for people of all ages and abilities. Whether it’s canyoning under the night sky, rock climbing in a middle earth landscape, sea kayaking to hidden corners of the harbour, or caving with glowworms, you’re sure to experience the adrenaline rush.

ARTY RAGLAN

There’s a plethora of galleries dotted around Raglan featuring local artists. In town you’ll find the Raglan Old School Arts Centre, Artists at Work, Jet Collective, La Petite Gallery and Made. Venture to the wharf and you’ll find The Monster Company and Rivet on Wallis St and The Wharf Gallery, Youmans Studio and Tony Sly Pottery right on the wharf. On the main road into town is Toi Hauauru Studio which is open by appointment and take a wander up Hills Rd for Little Hill Studios. Chris Meek’s Studeo Gallery is on Cross St and Bing Ceramics is the bright yellow house on Upper Wainui Rd. Pick up an Arts Trail guide from the I-Hub next to the museum or at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre for more information about local artists.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARADE

For close to 50 years Raglan has celebrated New Year’s Eve with a street parade. Organised by the Raglan Lions, the parade is a highlight on the Raglan calendar with locals putting on a show and competing for top honours for their floats. Cancelled only twice in its history, once for a storm and once for Covid, the parade starts at 7pm with floats meeting at Wallis St for judging at 6 pm. Entrants can pick up an entry form at judging time or at Raglan Book and Gift Centre on Bow St. From around 5.30pm Bow St is closed from the roundabout at James St down to Cliff St until the parade has finished.

SAFE IN THE WAVES

Ngarunui beach is patrolled by volunteer surf lifeguards every weekend and public holiday from Labour weekend through to Easter from 10.30am-

6pm on Saturday and 10.30am-5pm on Sunday. The paid lifeguard service is operating 10am to 7pm daily, finishing Friday, February 24. Help them out by following these simple guidelines

• Always swim between the flags at the southern end of the beach

• Read and understand the safety signs - ask a surf lifeguard for advice as conditions can change regularly

• Don’t overestimate your ability or your children’s ability to cope in the conditions

• Always keep a close eye on very young children in or near the water – always keep them within arm’s reach

• Get a friend to swim with you - never swim or surf alone

• Watch out for rip currents, they can carry you away from shore. If caught in a rip current remember the 3Rs - *Relax and float, *Raise your hand and *Ride the rip

• Be smart around rocks - when fishing never turn your back towards the sea and always wear a lifejacket

• If in doubt, stay out

• If you see someone in trouble, call 111 and ask for the police

• Be sun smart - slip, slop, slap and wrap to protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s damaging rays.

SUMMER SAFETY

A very merry Christmas and happy holidays from your local police officers, Linda, Andrew and Raewyn. We want you to all have a great summer whether you’re visiting for the holidays or you are lucky enough to live here. For our locals, we know you will make visitors feel welcome. If you’re visiting our town, we want you to leave with happy memories of your stay in Raglan.

Help make it a wonderful summer for everyone

• Be respectful. If that is not your car or your property, leave it alone. It is not yours to break into or yours to take property from it belongs to someone else.

• Be responsible. Do not drink and drive. Make plans ahead of time if you are going to be drinking.

• Be careful. Don’t leave property inside your cars. Lock your cars and your homes. Consider investing in house and car alarms, home security CCTV.

• Be patient. Everyone deserves to reach their destination. Give yourself plenty of driving time and enjoy the journey.

• Be awesome. Enjoy your time off work. Enjoy your family and friends. Enjoy the summer.

The Raglan CBD area is covered by a 24/7, 365 days a year alcohol ban in public places. From 23 December until 6 January, this alcohol ban extends to all public places 24/7. Yes, that means every public place, including all streets, all beaches, all reserves. Check out www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz for more on this and on freedom camping areas.

Overall, have a great 2022/2023 summer.

REDUCE, REUSE, REPURPOSE, RECYCLE

Here in Raglan all recycling is done by hand, by locals at Xtreme Zero Waste! They take glass in one crate, clean cardboard and paper on the side, and in the other crate a mix of plastics #1, #2 and #5 and clear film soft plastics, aluminium and tin cans which all need to be washed and squashed.

When you’re done with your sunset picnicking, please don’t overload the street bins. Xtreme service street bins all summer long, but sometimes they can fill up quick. To reduce the amount of seagull parties and litter heading into the sea please take your rubbish home with you rather than dumping it on the side.

Remember your reusables when you’re heading outside. Keep cup for coffee, containers for the bulk bin or the butcher. Refill your water bottle at drink fountains located outside community house, the library, at Paphua Domain and Riria Kereopa Drive. And most of Raglan’s cafes are happy to refill for free too!

If you’ve forgotten any of your holiday luggage, head to our local op shops, Lions, community house or check out Kaahu’s Nest at Xtreme the town’s largest second-hand shop. For more information visit xtremezerowaste.org.nz.

FROM INDO TO INDI

A MORNING GLORY STORY

Charged with finding the most delicious and healthy coffee on behalf of our beloved Raglan coffee drinkers, Paul Peterson - Founder of Morning Glory Organic Coffee set off to Indonesia in search of its finest tasting treats.

Not only did the coffee need to be mind blowingly delicious, it was just as important to verify the plantations growing conditions and the social aspect of these plantations.

Immediately after arriving in Java, charged on 3 cups of coffee and a vision, Paul and Indonesian local, Lukas Ondrisak from Divine Spices, hit the road and drove 6 hrs into the mountains of the Padhang Mbulan organic coffee plantation. Operated under the guardianship of 3rd generation coffee farmer and now friend Mas Dedik.

Heading up the steep trail on motorbike it didn’t look like a typical plantation monoculture, they were surrounded by mango, avocado, pine, cacao and most importantly, glowing in it’s

beautiful glory COFFEE and not an ounce of chemicals to be found.

The clarity and quality of air was sweet and the peaceful vibrations from the birdsong to the animal sounds were soothing and reassuring. Paul knew he had found something special.

After a few days on the Padhang Mbulan plantation cupping this beautiful coffee with Mas Dedik and his family they set off to the Argopuro Mountains in east Java. Another marathon drive through small village roads brought them to the warm greeting from Muhlis, head of Argopura Coffee and Co-op. A much larger operation the Argopua Social Enterprise employs nearly half of the local villagers. They built a school to educate the 800 local youth while the parents work for double the local wage planting, picking, processing and marketing coffee grown on their villages biodynamic mixed species plantation.

Not a single nutrient leaves the cycle. Paul learned about their advanced organic biological processing techniques, such as carbonic masseration, anaerobic lactic fermentation,

specifically coffee strains like orange bourbon and cupping scores in the pushing 90! He knew he had found a true coffee guru but the cherry on the top (no pun intended) was hearing about all the social projects they do. Not only do they provide the livelihood of half the village at double the conventional wage, they have built and run a school of 800 students where they donate 40% of profits to.

These students then study education or agronomy at university and return to apply their new knowledge and skills in the community enterprise. Definitely a kaupapa Paul felt like supporting.

Looking for fair trade and organic - Paul found something beyond sustainability, regeneration, and ecological and social level.

This direct trade single source coffee is arriving to Raglan in the next week ready for summer.

Pop into INDI Cafe and try a brew. It will also be available online through www.morningglory.co.nz

COME TO RAGLAN FOR THE SURF... STAY FOR THE DIRT

CYCLERY RAGLAN & THE RAGLAN MOUNTAIN BIKE TRACK

Raglan will always be famous for its surf, but it is also becoming more and more popular for its mountain bike network at Te Ara Kakariki in the pine area of the Wainui Reserve.

Thanks to the dedication of a small but loyal group of volunteers, the trail network has been growing slowly over the last 7or 8 years. There is a good mixture of family friendly grade 2 trails and some more skill required grade 4-5 ones. Although the area is not huge, the trails will offer a nice 1 to 2-hour workout. Access is free and the trails are accessible most of the year, even during the wet winter months. The tropical cyclone that hit our coast last February caused a lot of damage to the trails, but 90% of the network has been made safe again. As you can expect, all this hard mahi comes with a cost, so Raglan Mountain Biking Club is seeking more support and is on the lookout for more club members. You can become a club member for a $20 yearly fee. For $50, the club will throw in a club t-shirt and sticker.

Forgot to bring your bike? No worries. You can rent bikes from the local bike guru at Cyclery Raglan, 10 Bankart St. Full suspension bikes can be hired from Raglan Rock’s Adventure Base, Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive. Cyclery Raglan has a fully equipped workshop for all your bike repairs and E-Bike tuning, plus bike sales, bike accessories and parts, kids’ scooters, even a copy& print service, and key cutting. It is actually a pretty cool looking bike shop. Sorry, we don’t do electric scooters.

Green Wave has been up and running for a while now. Give us an update. How’s it all going?

We are actually just starting out our seventh summer. It’s amazing how much support the Raglan community has shown, so we’d like to thank everyone for that. We’re also excited to see a lot of new faces in town with so many travellers arriving from overseas. We love teaching and sharing something we’re passionate about with our students. And we’ve had phenomenal feedback as well - we’ve become the top-rated surf school in New Zealand. It’s nice to know that our students are having such a positive experience.

Who’s involved with the instructing?

There are three of us that run Green Wave together: Zennor Wernham, Wes Rogers and Bing Lyons. Between the three of us we have over 30 years coaching experience. We also have a team of talented local surfers and former Raglan Surf Academy students helping us out through the busy months.

People say how difficult it is to surf, but what do you say to those who have never surfed and want to give it a go? Will they get up?

Everyone stands up on our lessons. We actually offer a stand-up guarantee or your money back, and so far, we have a 100% success rate. We don’t really put any pressure on our students. Sometimes they might feel a little nervous before we start, but we keep everything fun and relaxed. Before they know it, they’re already up and riding a wave. With free photos to prove it!

Do you offer any kind of kids’ camp / summer holiday programmes?

We are running kids camps through the school holidays! It’s a great way to introduce kids to surfing in a fun, safe environment. We offer weekly camps as well as daily drop ins to fit everyone’s schedule.

You offer daily lessons. Is it always at the same time?

Our lesson schedule is based on the best tides and conditions for each day. This ensures that our students surf at the safest time and the easiest tide for learning. This makes a huge difference in the quality of a lesson. We often run multiple lessons per day in order to keep group sizes smaller. You can check the summer schedule on our website at www.greenwaveraglan.com

Do you offer rentals as well?

Yes, we have a range of boards and wetsuits available for hire. Lots of soft-top beginner-friendly boards but also some good intermediate boards as well. You can ring us at 021 0841 3481 to inquire about rentals.

What can we expect from Green Wave this coming Summer?

Lots of happy surfers, whether they’re keen travellers or local kiwi families. Our aim is to keep the quality of the lessons very high, with emphasis on ocean awareness. We put a lot of energy into every lesson and it’s rewarding to see how excited our surfers get as their skills progress.

THE SURFERS CODE

RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND EACH OTHER

to Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay and Whale Bay will soon be seeing new ‘Surfers Code’ signs near the water.

Surfers

Thanks to local funding by the Raglan Point Boardriders and a grant from Waikato District Council, the new signs will be up just in time for summer.

With the water getting busier and busier, knowing the rules and practising safety in the water is crucial here on the west coast. The main theme of the Surfers Code in Raglan:

Respect the environment, the ocean and most importantly, each other.

The infamous waves at Manu Bay attract surfers from around the world. But before you jump in the water just to say “I’ve surfed Manu Bay in Raglan”, take time to think if you really should be surfing there.

New Zealand’s original surf school started in 1999, and has had a long history of sharing and teaching surfing, employing locals, travellers, and providing boards at the beach for endless hours of fun.

Raglan Surf School had humble beginnings starting off with an old ambulance full of boards, and continues to be a small family business owned and operated by Rock who has been there from the beginning. Now, with 24 years of experience under his belt he is happy to be operating out of a repurposed fire truck with the trusty surfboard trailer in tow and is still located at Ngarunui beach car park. Feeling grateful to have made it to the other side of the last few trying years of Covid, Raglan Surf School is delighted to continue to offer surf

lessons and equipment rentals to kiwis, families, and returning travellers.

Raglan Surf School has been in the business of teaching surfing for a long time. They have a tried and tested technique that has evolved and improved over the years, which will get any learner feeling the buzz of getting up and surfing. For our experienced and passionate coaches who work for this small family business there is nothing better than getting surfers up and catching their first waves!

Raglan surf school offers group lessons, private lessons, private group lessons and as always, equipment rentals at the beach. All lessons can be booked online. Give us a shout!

Whaingaroa THROUGH THE LENS of

Only a short paddle away from the heart of the village, Raglan’s best kept secret is making headlines, and attracting people from all over the world for its unique landscape that seems to come right out of the Jurassic era!

Accessible only by water, the limestone coast is a must see for anyone wishing to experience Raglan to its fullest. If you are after the ultimate sustainable way to engage with our local environment and get inspired by its colourful culture & diverse

ecology, then going kayaking is the way to go!

We decided to catch up with Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard owners, Stephen & Candide Reid, to find out how to plan the ultimate outing this summer.

First, tell us, what’s so special about the limestone coast?

The unique rock formations that form the coast are approximately 30 million years old. It’s actually an ancient seabed, which has risen out of the ocean. Rain, wind, and tides have carved the rocks into

intricate and unique shapes which look like stacks of pancakes, hence the nickname!

Do we need experience to kayak to the pancake rocks?

No experience is required to join our guided excursions. That said, experience is required to rent our equipment and paddle to the pancake rocks without a guide.

Is kayaking in Raglan a family friendly activity?

Yes, totally, I can’t think of a better way to spend quality time with family and friends, even dogs sometimes come along!

A variety of options are available for families, so we suggest visiting our website or talk to our team to plan your family outing.

What would you suggest as the ultimate way to explore the Limestone Coast?

If you want to make the most of your experience and discover our secret spots, then I would recommend joining a guided tour, as local expertise goes a long way.

You’ll get to paddle through limestone labyrinths, nooks and crannies and our guides will share with you Raglan’s captivating stories along the way.

If you are an experienced kayaker, then renting the equipment for 2 hours is a good timeframe.

How do we go about planning a trip?

It’s easy, you can simply book directly through our website. For the ultimate experience, we suggest people plan in advance, especially during the high season.

You are also welcome to pop by and see our team at Bow Street Jetty’s waterfront, where we operate every day, in order to discuss your options.

Anything new at Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard this year?

Yes actually! We have an awesome new addition to our rental fleet called “The Jumbo Paddleboard”. This huge board can fit up to 6 to 8 people at once - it’s such a good laugh to rent with a bunch of friends or family. We are also excited to be providing Sea Kayaks as our new fleet for the boutique Kayak & Coffee Excursion.

The best news for us personally, is having our son Sky join the family business. We started Raglan Kayak in 2003 when he was just a toddler and so nothing could make us happier than to have Sky join our awesome team!

Are you ready to escape the ordinary with friends and family?

Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard is open daily, operating from Bow Street Jetty Waterfront from 9am to 5pm, all summer.

Book your experience today!

TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

Kia ora whānau and a big awhi to all of you for reading this column over the last ten months.

I started this column hoping to encourage conversations about our mental health and help people find tools to add to their toolboxes. Still, I didn’t expect how much value I would gain from it myself. It is truly special to sit down with friends and strangers alike to talk about the stuff that matters, and I can only hope our chats have inspired you all to do the same.

When I sat down and read the interviews from the last ten months, I was struck by the differences in each person and their journey, but also by the universality of their resilience and desire to move forward. We all struggle, and we all experience pain, but what is important is that we commit to looking after ourselves. Dr Patte Randal told us that recovery is cyclical and that we need to understand our patterns and turn crises into opportunities. Eve MacFarlane reminded us that self-awareness is most important in mental health recovery, and Fleur told us how trusting her intuition has led to much more balance in her life. John and Glen from the local Men’s Group talked to us about the five core emotions; when you’re asking yourself why, try to figure out whether it is coming from anger, fear, sadness, disgust or enjoyment. Sometimes just asking yourself ‘why’ is enough of a road to understanding your behaviour. Another tip that has stayed with me was from Ngaru; life isn’t black and white. We all need to learn to live in the grey space, and there is so much colour in the grey.

As we head into a busy summer here in Whāingaroa, it is important to ensure we don’t burn ourselves out amongst all the festivities and sunshine. One of the prevailing themes throughout all the interviews was connecting with nature. We have so much goodness right on our back doorstep, so whether you’re just popping your feet in the water or going on a hike, use your surroundings to ground yourself. And don’t forget to refill your cup!

Finally, a huge thank you to the lovely members of our community who spoke with me. Rach Hudson, Ngaru Toka, Eve Douglass, Rick Thorpe, Karamea Puriri, Harry Kitiona, John and Greg from the Men’s Group, Eve MacFarlane, Fleur Rubingh and Dr Patte Randal; your vulnerability to share your thoughts and feelings is admirable and appreciated.

Here’s to a safe and happy summer, and I’ll see you all in 2023!

LILY BEE - SPEAKS TO ME JACQUI KAY CHATS WITH LILY

Agood conversationalist is genuine in their care for others and keeps an open mind to learn more about their conversation partner through relevant questioning and comments.

We are honoured to have Lily Bee grace our cover this Summer. Lily Bee is a kind and curious young human who touches many hearts. She is also a mighty fine conversationalist.

With another hat on I worked with Lily as a preschooler to help develop her communication. I have been fortunate through friendship to observe Lily’s remarkable progress over the years due to her dedicated and loving parents Ange and Gareth as

LILY: How long have you been doing this interview thing Jacqui?

JACQUI: Since my daughter Coco was born.

LILY: How old is Coco now?

JACQUI: 17

LILY: So 17 years. That’s a long time. Why are you interviewing me?

JACQUI: Because everyone has a story Lily and everyone is unique.

LILY: I’m unique because I’m happy and joyful but also emotional and I sometimes get anxiety. I get worried sometimes.

I have a bit of everything.

JACQUI: I really like the words you use to describe yourself and I fully relate. I could actually describe myself in the same way Lily. Let’s learn more about you... How old are you?

LILY: 12 and a half.

JACQUI: What school do you go to?

LILY: Te Mata.

JACQUI: What do you like about school?

LILY: I love that I can hang out with Esme and Cameron. My favourite part of school is that I have an awesome teacher Ms Briant. My favourite subject is writing.

JACQUI: Tell me about a special friend you have and what you like about them?

LILY: Lenny. He always accepts me for who I am. He is like a brother.

JACQUI: What are your interests?

LILY: I’ve been horseriding since I was 3. I like playing Nintendo and Roblox after school with Lenny. I love animals and caring for them. I am going to have a dog walking and dog sitting business in Raglan.

JACQUI: What a great idea Lily! I so remember the love and attention you gave our little dog Tommy. All the best with that.

What do you love about living in Raglan?

LILY: That I get to go to town and have yum hot chips. It has a beautiful beach that I love going for walks on with Daddy.

JACQUI: What might you want to do when you leave school?

LILY: I think at the moment I want to be a caregiver for people with disabilities. There are people in wheelchairs who need help with eating and getting dressed. I could help them. I hear your daughter Frankie is training to be a nurse. That is so good. I hope she does well with that.

JACQUI: Thanks Lily.

Who are your special people?

LILY: Mummy, Daddy, Nanny, Pop and my cousin Bella.

JACQUI: And what are you doing this summer ?

LILY: Going to stay at with Nanny and Pop in the Coromandel. Do you think we can get hot chips from the bakery after I’ve finished being a model?

JACQUI: Yes we sure can!

Thinking about checking out those epic fishing spots just across the bar? From the Manukau and Tairua to Raglan and Waimakariri, Coastguard volunteers responded to a number of bar crossing accidents last summer, several of which saw people not return home to their loved ones.

This summer, we’re calling for all boaties to get home safely from the bar – even if that means deciding not to cross at all.

Coastguard Papakura volunteer Chris Laufale said his Unit’s volunteers have responded to numerous preventable tragedies on the Manukau bar over the years.

“Even for the most experienced boaties like our skippers, crossing a bar requires careful planning, observation and risk assessment. We’re seeing too many risks being taken when crossing bars so are urging boaties to follow our five-step bar crossing checklist this summer,” he said.

“Crossing the bar because you feel pressured to get home is a recipe for disaster. Know your limits and take your time.”

Over summer, Coastguard volunteers will be out on the water ensuring Kiwis can enjoy our beautiful waterways safely and with confidence. Do you part and make sure you and your whānau don’t become a statistic this holiday season.

If you need to contact Coastguard for onwater assistance, please call *500. For marine emergencies please call 111 or VHF Channel 16.

ELVEN BLADES NZ ARTISAN CHEF’S KNIVES

Making knives from raw steel by hand is an ancient artisan craft. My hobby is cooking – so guess why I make Chef’s knives?

G

eraldine Burns is a local artist who creates exclusive, professionally framed photographic artworks. Her style, often described as poetic and ‘having a quiet eye’ - Geraldine captures a mood and a sense of ‘being there’.

Over the past few years Geraldine has made a return to film photography - the art she learnt back in her school days. She has enjoyed the slower pace of film, taking more time to take the photo itself and taking less photos too.

Work created from 2019 are one-offs - exclusive fine art photography in a ‘more is more’ world. Geraldine holds regular exhibitions of her work and has a number of pieces available to buy - visit her website to see work that is currently for sale.

I love the challenge that comes with each blade and I still have not decided yet what is the more satisfying element of this work: drafting the design, then making the blade and working with hand-forged Damascus steel and brass or creating handles, blade guards and gift boxes from NZ native and exotic wood.

The “One And Only” knife is waiting for you in my studio in beautiful Moonlight Bay.

NowI may be living in a muddy bubble, but it seems like everyone and their dog are getting into the pottery vibe! To acknowledge this, we’re hosting the first ever Best West Clay Fest. (Words by Sarah Bing, ceramic sculptor)

This family fun day is all about celebrating local talent, sharing just what is so good about clay and having some creative fun with the community.

We’ve got a lineup of local superstars selling their work in the ceramics market. Join our free community art project with a big pile of clay for everyone to get stuck in - making a village out of local mud. Check out the display of the process clay goes through to become the bowl you eat your brekkie in. For some muddy inspiration visit the pottery wheel and handbuilding demonstrations. Watch or enter the Clay-lympics with events like pull the longest handle or throw the tallest cylinder. And of course enjoy food, fresh juices, and tunes.

Can’t wait to see you there!

It’s been an exciting year at Crafted Concrete, involving some interesting indoor and outdoor projects.

I am finding that concrete is such a unique medium to work with, the possibilities are endless. I am excited about the ways in which I can use concrete in furniture, a warped-style coffee table for example.

I work closely with clients to create kitchen benchtops, bathroom vanities, outdoor entertainment areas and basins.

I am currently working on a new range of bathroom countertop and wall mounted basins, for example the basin featured here with a Terrazzo finish.

I share a showroom with Motide, you are welcome to visit me by appointment.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss any projects you have in mind.

FOX CABINS

SPECIAL OPEN DAY

28th of Janurary 2023 by Appointment

Come visit our impeccably crafted Tiny Homes, designed and built to withstand the test of time.

Sometimes simplicity can be the greatest luxury - especially when that simplicity provides you with more time, more financial freedom, and more lifestyle flexibility.

A tiny home may be small on space, but can provide a big opportunity for you and your family - whether by generating a second income stream as a high-end accommodation unit, creating a stylish and easy-care holiday house, or by offering you the perfect permanent home that you’ve always dreamed of.

Fox Cabins was founded by licensed Masterbuilder (and Raglan local) Adam Fox to meet the demand for higher quality tiny homes and transportable buildings.

Adam says that while there are now many companies operating in this market space, Fox Cabins is unique in terms of the quality of the design, engineering, and workmanship of its buildings - from custom bespoke cabinetry to Coloursteel cladding, every detail is meticulously attended to, ensuring a stylish and durable structure that you will be proud to live in for years to come.

As their reputation and client base has grown, the company has expanded into its new 500m2 premises at the Nau Mai business park in Raglan, where Adam works alongside a team of skilled builders, fully licensed tradesmen, and master woodworkers to bring each bespoke design to fruition.

Offering a wide range of accommodation solutions from small cabins to fully consented architecturally designed baches, Fox Cabins can work with you to achieve something truly special.

If you have a vision that you’d like to bring to life, Fox Cabins will be running an Open Day on Saturday 28th of January 2023 from 9am - 2pm. Please email info@foxcabins.nz or call Adam on 07 788 0101 for more information or to book your time slot.

RAGLAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Hello my name is Michelle Cobham and I am the owner / operator of Raglan Independent Courier - which began on the 26th November 2019.

I’m a mum of 5 awesome well-rounded kids and have 8, almost 9 grandchildren. I am super thankful for all the community support I get, which keeps me in business. Raglan is a beautiful place and I often find myself look at the sea while I’m out delivering stuff, I am very lucky…

I have some awesome sister mates, that have been with me right from the start and are always on hand when I need advice, as well as my parents and family are also my amazing support crew!

At the moment, I am a one woman band, so it helps heaps to have my man Doug on board doing the endless phone calls, to find parts and tyres for my van whenever it’s needed, to keep me on the road, looking after all my customers.

I’d like to add that I’m super grateful that Direct Tech and their team and Top Garage and team are always on hand when I need them. I would like to also thank Raglan Sign Co. for the awesome signwriting on both my vans.

You can find my ad on the front of our local Chronicle or contact me by phoning / texting on 027 325 4181.

A MESSAGE FROM CHAIR -

In 2019, 2020 and 2021 there was massive campaign in New Zealand to “Shop Local” around Christmas time that appears to have died off but we support and encourage the premise.

Our local businesses are vital to the recovery and on-going resilience of the economy.

During last year’s Covid-19 restrictions our small business owners showed initiative, hard work and resilience to keep afloat. It feels lika lifetime ago, but in reality it was only a year ago that we were waiting for a date that the Auckland and Waikato trading restrictions would lift. Many businesses faced an uncertain summer with the Vaccine Passes introduced – many lost good staff and were unable to open. Many faced caps on numbers on site and were unable top operate with a full contingent of staff.

We are currently free from the restrictions we faced this time last year, but many businesses were hit hard and are still facing challenges this year, that are a flow on effect from Covid Lockdowns and borders being closed. We need to give our businesses as much support as possible

Local businesses create jobs that help us pay rent, mortgages and keep food on the table. They provide us goods and services which means we don’t have to spend hours (and petrol!) driving somewhere else for what we need.

They help our local shopping centres feel like vibrant hubs for our community, where we meet friends, pick up a coffee and get some fresh food for our fridges at home.

Shopping local brings us all greater benefit. It’s about more than the product or service you buy. It’s about keeping the money you spend in the local economy and keeping it working in the town to help us all.

Local businesses are often generous sponsors of local events, clubs and charities. These businesses pay salaries to local staff and keep money in the towns and regions but they also work on growing and developing staff, teaching them skills and enabling them to grow as people.

Let’s support local this festive season and into the summer.

While the factors driving the housing

2022 was another busy and exciting year for Rangitahi as we welcomed a further 45 families into our community and celebrated another 70 homes under construction. We love seeing new faces around the peninsula and hearing stories about our residents’ journey to Rangitahi.

Of particular mention in 2022 we received the ‘green light’ on a number of large-scale projects. These community facilities will only enhance the tight-knit and dynamic environment currently on offer.

The Rangitahi Café, located in The Village will boast indoor and outdoor dining options with extensive decking and an outdoor fireplace perfect for taking in the stunning views. In addition, there will be offices on the top level of the café and a space for a small retail shop on the street frontage of the building. If you are interested in leasing any of these spaces, please contact Jordan Metcalf at Bayleys Real Estate.

We are excited to share that we are currently working with a playground design team to bring a children’s playground, half basketball court, tennis court and public toilet block to Rangitahi. As a growing community, with many families this will be a welcome addition and one we are sure will be well-utilised.

RANGITAHI PENINSULA A GROWING COMMUNITY

We have also recently released the West Village, a contemporary collection of sustainable, cost-effective, communityoriented homes that prioritise sun, views and shared communal spaces. West Village has eleven homes which comprise 2-4 bedrooms with garaging and one commercial site. If you are interested in viewing the West Village, contact Mark Frost at Bayleys Real Estate.

While our final project is still in its infancy, we know it is one that is desperately needed by the wider Raglan community. While no date has been officially set, the Whaingaroa public swimming pool is earmarked for construction within the Plateau area.

The Rangitahi community could be the perfect place to build your dream home and raise your family. We currently have 25 sections available in our fifth stage – The Landing. Sites range in size from 375m2 –902m2 and flow towards a public reserve with easy access to the water for the whole family to enjoy. Visit www.rangitahi.co.nz to find out more.

From the team here at Rangitahi we would just like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year and we look forward to another busy and exciting year on the peninsula in 2023.

The Rangitahi office will be closed from 22nd December - 10th January 2023.

The Hut is closed from the 23rd Dec, reopening 10th Jan.

Opening Hours: 7.30am - 1.30pm 8.00am - 1200pm (Hours may vary over summer)

Raglan Karioi Trail, the annual trail running event, returned this December after last year’s cancellation. The Local Rag caught up with organiser Francois Mazet to hear how it went.

How did the event run? Were weather conditions favorable?

The Raglan Karioi Trail 2022 went very well. We were lucky with the weather and perfect conditions for running. We stayed dry! The track was slippery from the rain in the night coming in to the event but sounded like the participants enjoyed sliding down the Maunga!

Who would you like to give thanks to for supporting you though the event process?

First the participants. Then the volunteers. It’s amazing how they are all with us every year doing such a great job. We can call that the RKT Family.

I don’t forget all the sponsors and local businesses: we can’t do it without you. Thank you. And also the land owners and local Iwi.

THIS ONE’S FOR YOU KYLE

The event was dedicated to Kyle Leuthhart who the community was deeply sad to lose last year. Kyle was a keen supporter of the event. Why did you want to honor him this way?

Because he was part of this RKT family. When I reach a summit, and I just lost a close person, this is always dedicated to him or her.

On the day, I couldn’t run but I asked the participants to do it on my behalf and run for Kyle. That day was an emotional one. Russell Rikki did a great blessing in the morning. This one’s for you Kyle!

How many years has it been now? Can we expect another RKT event later this year?

This was the ninth edition and I will see every one for the 10th anniversary the 9th December 2023.

Don’t forget Swanny will run the 10km for the 10th year! See you all next year.

Like a box of fine chocolates, indulgent temptation always lies within. Wrapped in rural tranquillity near Ruapuke Beach and the foothills of Mt Karioi, your taste buds will drool just seeing this country retreat. Cherish breakfast and brunch on the mountain-view patio, then lounge on the verandah and toast sunset as it dips behind the ocean. Architectural simplicity features cedar cladding and a design focused on high ceilings, natural light and outdoor flow. Three spacious bedrooms are supported by two luxury bathrooms - the best reserved for the master ensuite. Bold in black with an imported egg bath, you'll bathe beneath chandelier lighting while gazing out to sea. Black magic is also mirrored in a gourmet kitchen - high-end appliances and a clean island for congregation and chatter. A successful BNB, this home has hosted guests and gatherings. bayleys.co.nz/2313999

Time to get those thinking caps on and ideas flowing.

A lifetime ago Raglan Art to Wear was born from a creative workshop held at the Old School. The workshop culminated in a fashion show with costumes made By Yani Split. Yani went on to become a section winner at WOW and Art to Wear became Raglan’s Biennial show.

AUT graduate Jean Carbon introduced Wearable Art to her High School students and they loved it. Jean, new to Raglan, discovered it was a wonderful way to get to know the community and has loved watching the fledgling artists grow up through the years to develop skills in construction and creation, problemsolving and recycling. From the individual artist to whānau collaboration plus community and school groups, Raglan creators of all ages are able to discover the thrill of being on stage and the acknowledgement of their work.

The five categories which are sponsored by our wonderful community groups and businesses are open to interpretation allowing creators to think

outside the box. We encourage all artists to aim for 100% recycled materials and Zero Extreme Waste has been very supportive in providing assistance with a variety of creative bits and pieces.

As we near the end of the year we are looking for expressions of interest in each of the categories:

COUNCILLOR K ŌRERO

A MESSAGE FROM THE WHĀINGAROA WARD COUNCILLOR

Kia ora koutou. Christmas and New Year is a time that many of us will be looking forward to taking a break and to spending time with whānau, friends and loved ones.

It is also a time when people help others - for example, our local foodbank and other amazing organisations, many are run by the goodness of volunteers; Raglan Surf Life Saving, Raglan Coastguard, Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade, Raglan Lions, Raglan Community Patrol, Surfside Church, Whāingaroa Hauora Hub, Ambulance, our local police and Raglan Naturally to name some. In doing this mahi, each organisation will be helping to provide support to our community, this is the kind-heartedness and generosity that makes this place so special.

I would like to acknowledge our hardworking hospitality providers, our cafes, our accommodation providers and also our retailers who do a fabulous job of taking care of locals and visitors alike.

When visiting, be aware that many of our cafes/businesses are facing staffing shortages which means shortened operating times/days and longer waiting times for service, please be patient and remember a smile goes a long way when people are under pressure.

Personally, this is my most favourite time of year, the fresh tang of salted air, the warmth of the sunshine, watching the kids jetty jumping, my young people hanging at home with friends, but most of all, the friendly, laid back, welcoming feel that our community has. It’s also a time to look forward to enjoying some of what Whāingaroa has to offer:

The much anticipated return of the world famous Raglan Lions New Year’s Parade - it’s time to get creative and enter a float.

Friday evenings local ‘Growers Market’, the perfect place to buy fresh produce, 5pm - 7pm, Stewart Street.

Sunset walks along the beach.

Wainui Reserve Bush Park, a great spot to enjoy walks, have a picnic and time with the kids .

A few days’ getaway to Ruapuke Motor Camp.

Watching the sunrise from the top of Karioi maunga.

If you are visiting us, bring a little extra patience as you make your way around the community, relax and chill out. Hang out at any one of our coffee shops, where you’ll see people with young kids, both visitors and locals alike spending time sipping coffee, talking, laughing and connecting.

Take time to let traffic cross the one lane car bridge, from both sides! When you see cars backing up toward town or Raglan west, let them through, a couple of minutes waiting to let others go, won’t end the world. Check out our new parking map for information on best spots to park around the CBD. If you are freedom camping, check out www.waikatodistrict. govt.nz/recreation/camping for all you need to know.

Take care to love our backyard like we do, take your rubbish with you, where you can, use your reusables, if you have heard the saying ‘leave only footprints?’... think of that when you are here in our community.

Enjoy your time in our place.

Merry Christmas everyone, best wishes for a safe, joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Ngaa mihi, Lisa Thomson Raglan Ward Councillor
