COUNTDOWN TO A DIGITAL RAILWAY HS2, Crossrail, new fleets and electrification will not free up enough extra capacity for Britain’s runaway success rail network, says Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail. Much more capacity is needed. ‘The only real way we can do this is to use digital train control,’ Carne told the rail industry. A step up from ERTMS, digital train control increases the amount of paths available to train companies keen to run more services, more often. Carne, speaking at the Rail Exec Club in London, said proposals will be unveiled next year.
