CLEANROOM WIPES TERMINOLOGY Abrasion Resistance: measures weight lost by the wiper when exposed to controlled abrasion; indicates wiper’s ability to withstand abrasion experienced during normal use Aseptic: avoids microorganism contamination by maintaining sterile conditions and procedures Cleanroom: a room used to control environmental parameters, such as limiting the introduction and retention of airborne particles or the generation of microbial substances
Knit Wipe: The cleanest basic wipe substrate; the structure of knit yarns reduces shedding, particles and fibers while increasing sorbency and durability
Particle Generation: determines the particle load of a wiper under minimal stress. Measures the cleanliness of the wiper material and its tendency to shed particles
Laundered vs. Unlaundered Wipes: Wipes designed for more critical cleanroom areas are laundered using highly-filtered water and HEPA filtration to reduce contamination; unlaundered wipes are typically more economically priced
Particulates: contaminants with an observable length, width, and thickness, typically 0.1 µm or more
Meltblown Fibers: Polymers, usually polypropylene, are melted and extruded into long, thin fibers that are cooled with air
Continuous Filament Fibers: Extruded as long strings of thin fibers that are folded over to produce single yarns; increases abrasion resistance and reduces fiber release
Micron: µm, or micrometer, a unit of length equal to 0.000039”, 0.001 mm, one thousandth (10-3) of a millimeter, or approximately 1/75 the diameter of a human hair
Deionized Water (DI Water / Semiconductor Grade Water): water that has been filtered and treated to kill microorganisms and remove metallic ions and impurities
Microfiber: an ultrafine fiber that when used to form a wiper substrate greatly increases surface area and softness
Extractable Ions: determines the amount of water-soluble ions present in the wiper which could be left as a wiping residue Gamma Irradiation: exposing an object to gamma rays, typically using Cobalt-60 Gamma Radiation, to destroy bacteria and other transmissible lifeforms Hydroentangling: the process of spraying fibers with jets of pressurized filtered water to create non-woven fabrics without heat or binding agents IPA: isopropyl alcohol, the most popular cleaning solution due to its ability to dissolve contaminants, sanitize surfaces and evaporate quickly with only minute chemical residues ISO Classes 1–9: standards for cleanrooms adopted by the International Standards Organization (ISO); based on airborne particles per cubic foot, ranging from cleanest (ISO 1) to dirtiest (ISO 9)
Microorganisms: microscopic organisms with one or more cells, e.g. bacteria, fungi, viruses, algae, etc. Non-Volatile Residue: measures the total amount of water-, isopropyl alcohol-, or 1,1,1,-Trichloroethane-soluble foreign material which may be present in a wipe Nonwoven Wipes: the most basic and economical cleanroom wipe substrate; typically created through hydroentangling (see entry) or thermal bonding, where minute fibers are heated until forming a uniform material
Presaturated: “Presats” or “wet wipes” are wipes in air-tight containers that are packaged with an optimal amount of a liquid (or “saturant”) Polyester/Cellulose: The most common nonwoven wipe substrate; combines the purity and strength of polyester with the hydrophilic properties of cellulose Polypropylene/Cellulose: A composite substrate that combines the scratch and chemical resistances of polypropylene with the hydrophilic properties of cellulose Sealed Edges: edges of wipes are sealed, typically with laser heat, for significantly reduced fiber release Sontara®: a specialty nonwoven used in critical applications due to high cleanliness and scratch and abrasion resistance Sterile: the state of being free from viable microorganisms, which technically cannot be absolutely proven; expressed as a probability with Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) Twill: a type of fabric weave that creates a raised surface texture suitable for gentle scrubbing
