Welcome to a glimpse into HDL, Inc.’s greatness! As you read through the pages of our culture book, you will understand our great purpose and how personally empowered and consciously aware we all are. Most importantly, you will understand the passion each of us has for what we do. It is a pleasure to work with such an incredible staff, who are so dedicated to one another as well as their communities, clients, and patients and so committed to making a change in the way medicine is practiced today. Tonya Mallory started working full time at the age of 13—and never stopped. HDL, Inc. truly is the culmination of decades of hard work and incredible accomplishments in the face of adversity.
the
founders
And what makes the HDL, Inc. achievement so revolutionary is its impact on modern medicine and human wellness. She says, ”We diagnose health instead of disease. It’s one thing to know you have a condition; it’s another thing to know how to reverse and improve your condition.” But Tonya believes that the people of HDL, Inc. truly deserve the credit. ”We value what the individual brings to the team. Our success comes from dedicated employees who are pushed to innovate and rewarded for making processes better.”

“The achievements of HDL, Inc. are still astonishing”
G. Russell Warnick, M.S., MBA Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder
Joseph McConnell, the former Director of Cardiovascular Laboratory Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, is thrilled with HDL, Inc.’s growing impact. Having dedicated his career to helping those at risk of cardiovascular events—like many members of his very own family—he sees the success of HDL, Inc. in terms of the relationships that grow throughout long and healthy lives. He often thinks of his mother and his daughter, realizing that their special relationship was made possible by people just like his HDL, Inc. teammates. ”Let’s all work together to continue to nurture relationships like this—by making sure our loved ones, and others, discover their cardiovascular health risks through comprehensive testing,” he says, ”so that they can receive the medical, dietary, and lifestyle therapies that will beat this all-too-often life-shortening disease.”
Joseph P. McConnell, Ph.D. Chief Laboratory Officer and Co-founder
Russ Warnick’s long and storied career in laboratory diagnostics began in the 1970s as a captain in the US Army Medical Service Corps and continues today. Even with his decades at the forefront of diagnostics for cardiovascular and other chronic diseases, the achievements of HDL, Inc. are still astonishing to him. ”We have developed and improved a new model with advanced, comprehensive testing of biomarkers to characterize cardiometabolic diseases,” he says, ”along with counseling of patients to help them understand and comply with treatment and education of physicians so they can better utilize the emerging biomarkers in practice.” He is incredibly proud of his team’s success in the fight against chronic diseases and is equally excited about the HDL, Inc. advancements in health that are on the way.

Our work is lifesaving and groundbreaking. Our pace is lightning fast—new patents, thousands of patients, and hundreds of thousands of tests. It takes an exceptional amount of dedication and some of the best teamwork humanly possible. The things we accomplish together make a real difference in the world. And over the past year, our team experienced tremendous growth—saving more and more lives along the way. Our true victories aren’t in the papers and on the news—they’re spending time with family and friends— they’re the thousands of people alive, healthy, and able to enjoy the things they love. And no single person is responsible for something so wonderful—it’s the team’s achievement.

HDL, Inc.’s summer interns–

green team!
HDL, Inc. believes in supporting people with disabilities, and due to the overwhelming success of past internship programs with local public schools, we launched a business-led internship program in 2013 to get young adults with disabilities ready for competitive employment. HDL, Inc. has expanded its workplace readiness transition program to include private education as well. What makes the program so special and effective is one-on-one job coaching by licensed and certified special educators combined with daily direct instruction in Workplace Readiness Skills—all in a real business environment. It’s proven so successful that we’re offering internships during the summer. HDL, Inc.’s Transitional Program has even been approved and adopted by the State Department of Education as a model for transitional services utilizing the state’s Workplace Readiness Skills in our curriculum as well as the integration of our corporate values, which enriches the state’s citizenry. This is a huge accomplishment on behalf of Lisa Dyson, Mary Townley, Elizabeth Howley, and Ben Samuels. 43

the official health & wellness partner of the Washington Redskins
We worked with Virginia’s favorite athletes to deliver HDL, Inc.’s passion to the exciting world of pro sports—giving our advanced testing and clinical health consulting to the players, coaches, and staff of the Washington Redskins. As general manager Bruce Allen said, ”HDL brings a tremendous value to the overall well-being of our organization, and we are thrilled to have this great company as a Washington Redskins partner moving forward.” 47
teamwork
Quarterback Kirk Cousins and wide receiver Pierre Garçon were our official Health Ambassadors—providing star power to our team. We provided the inspiration and expertise in health to theirs. Our sponsorship of the Washington Redskins’ health and wellness website, and the MVP role of our ”Hail To Your Health” campaign to Tackle Diabetes Month and Diabetes Awareness Day brought HDL, Inc.’s vision of healthy lifestyles and disease prevention to Virginia and the rest of the Washington Redskins nation.
Our high-energy and inspirational commercial brought awareness of HDL, Inc. and our partnership with the Washington Redskins to hundreds of thousands of people, airing on televisions in the Washington market and up on the big screen during every home game in the 2013 season. Our former employee Reggie showed the world that even a distinguished, elderly gentleman can do an amazing end zone celebration with HDL, Inc. as a dance partner!

Focused, fired-up, and poised for success—HDL, Inc. and the VCU Rams have a lot in common! The HDL, Inc. Athletic Village is a significant partnership that incorporates all of VCU’s athletic facilities into the ”HDL, Inc. Athletic Village” family—including the Stuart C. Siegel Center—VCU’s impressive upcoming basketball complex.
a partnership with VCU for

The HDL, Inc. Athletic Village is an incredible asset to VCU’s athletic program, and as VCU head men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart says, ”We are extremely appreciative of HDL and the investment they’ve made into the future of this University. Our program’s number one aim is to put our studentathletes in the very best position possible to succeed. The generous support of HDL goes a long way towards helping us make this goal a reality.” And as Tonya points out, ”The HDL and VCU partnership goes beyond just the funding of a
premier athletic facility. HDL places an enormous value on saving lives and preventing disease through advanced testing, lifestyle change, and the type of active living that is enhanced by the Athletic Village.” To this caring end, VCU Athletics and HDL, Inc. will promote coordinated wellness initiatives with VCU student-athletes, placing a special focus on innercity youth and community engagement.

Tonya shared her wisdom with VCU’s Humanities and Sciences, teaming up with Shaka Smart to explore the importance of hard work and education.
Shaka brings HAVOC to HDL, Inc. Shaka Smart is one of the youngest and most successful coaches in the history of college basketball. His innovative HAVOC defense has dominated the court and taken down the most skillful teams. HAVOC pressures opponents past the breaking point, wearing them down physically and mentally over an entire game. That ferocious approach to competition is only made possible by a relentless commitment to victory—practiced and
refined each and every day. And the hard work, teamwork, and passion that it takes to consistently win at such high levels is the same on the court as it is in the lab. Shaka Smart visited HDL, Inc. to share his knowledge about bringing an organization to new levels of success. Tonya gave him a challenging interview in front of 250 employees, and in the end, everyone learned something new about leading a team to its true potential. 54
breakfast of health champions A handful of lucky invitees joined HDL, Inc. at the Science Museum of Virginia for a morning of championship-level health care cost management education. Delivering the absolute best service is central to HDL, Inc. culture. After all, the work we do saves lives—which means we have the health and well-being of countless friends, family members, and loved ones in our hands every day we come to work. And we embrace this responsibility throughout every step of the process—from the phlebotomists who draw samples to the lab departments that process them to the Clinical Health Consultants and every single point of contact between. HDL, Inc. is determined to make our service even better, because in order to truly beat chronic diseases, going beyond disease diagnosis isn’t enough—we need to go beyond our previous expectations for superior service.

Out of all cancers, lung cancer is the number one killer in America—taking more lives than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney, and skin cancers combined.1 Delayed diagnosis makes this disease especially deadly. Lacking early warning symptoms, it is usually detected after it has spread to other parts of the body.
HDL, Inc.’s new blood test EarlyCDT®-Lung is an innovation for early detection—finding lung cancer up to five years earlier than any other method. And our colleagues at Central Medical Lab in De Soto, Kansas, are making it happen. With the excellent laboratory work that leads to timely discovery, patients can experience 90% survival rates and go on to live healthy, happy lives.2

new building expansion: on track for 2014 completion
Home is where the heart is, and our home is growing tremendously— reflecting our continued development as an organization. In the first phase of our company headquarters expansion, HDL, Inc. made a massive capital investment in Richmond, creating a 112,000-square-foot, six-story building, completed in February of 2013. Phase II is already underway, bringing even more revenue to the city. When completed, HDL, Inc.’s headquarters will accommodate well over 1,000 employees, have a rooftop park, spiral slides connecting floors, and will be roughly the size of five football fields!

innovation week HDL, Inc. believes in the importance of creating something new, and we give our team all the encouragement they need to get creative and ignite innovation. The HDL, Inc. InnoChallenge asked employees to compete to develop the most innovative concepts, inventions, or improvements for processes, distribution channels, communication modes, waste minimization, products, services, and more—with winners chosen during Innovation Week. And our innovation-inspiring week included a recap of recent HDL, Inc. innovations, challenges from VCU’s da Vinci Center for Innovation and the School of the Arts, a town hall with renowned innovation expert Dr. Gerard Tellis, and of course…the Shark Tank! Our InnoChallenge finalists jumped in the tank and competed for thousands of dollars of on-the-spot innovation bonuses!
Congratulations to the winning teams for their innovative concepts: Angela Smith, Greg Kontos, Brian Kappus, and Owen Rangus: A high-speed "Delta" robot that re-caps tubes within Beckman Automate racks. Lydia Snyder and Anna Dean: Providing extensive, virtual training of HDL, Inc.’s biomarkers and counseling approach. Christian Payán: Satellite wellness clinics as a branch of HDL, Inc. that focus on comprehensive lifestyle change and could evolve into a place for continued care, cardiac rehabilitation, and research. "We uncover 30% more patients with insulin resistance than traditional testing. Interestingly, the profile and characteristics of these patients are often very surprising."
”Having spent 15 years running a biotech company that I founded, I was a bit hesitant to join another company. Well, it only took a single close look at HDL to wipe out any apprehensions I may have had. The combination of cuttingedge technology, amazing talent, and passion shared by every employee to make a difference is what separates this company from the rest. After only five months here, I can't think of a more exciting, challenging, and fun place to work than HDL. Oh, and by the way, we save lives. Seriously, how much better can it get?” Maciek Sasinowski, MD, Ph.D.

“After four and a half years—which seems like 10 or 15 years so much has happened in that time—one thing is clear; we are making a difference. We have demonstrated that we can prevent heart disease and diabetes and substantially decrease overall health care costs. There have been challenges along the way and challenges will continue to be encountered in the future, but WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Compliments and thanks to all in the company who have contributed to this effort.” “Our mission is to beat cardiovascular disease, and although we have a long way to go, we can see that goal coming to fruition. Some physician practices that see 1,000 to 2,000 patients annually will have, on average, 35 to 70 adverse events (heart attacks, strokes, stent placements) per year. Some physicians using HDL, Inc. testing are now seeing only zero, one, or two events in their patient population per year.”

“Our company is built on the idea of changing the way medicine is practiced. The entire paradigm is shifting from following patients to treating patients. It is the first time in my lifetime that I actually see a huge change coming in health care— and that’s quite exciting! The future is continuing the path forward to impact more patients and change lives. Our talented, dedicated team will make it happen. HDL, Inc. is truly 1,000 different voices, but the passion, vision, and direction are one.”
