. GRADUATION PROJECT .

Static v. Dynamic

BUILDING ON WHAT IS ALREADY BUILT:

STATIC v. DYNAMIC

In my graduation project, the chaotic dynamism of the modern city of Newcastle is introduced to run rampant against the static Neo-Classicist Grainger Market, beneath a new geometrically fluid glass roof. The main concept of the design is creating a paradox in which the huge contradictions between the old existing building and the new extension are proudly celebrated instead of being hidden and shied away from.

. YEAR 3 PROJECT

NO. 1

.

The Curtain Cube

THE SELLING ARTEFACT:

THE CURTAIN CUBE Based on the idea of different layers that link up together. This design explores and represents the flexible inter-planar relationship present in Grainger Market through the use of the circular motion of the book as a reference for the required planar motion. Given the flexibility of the design components, it is very easy to manipulate the pavilion/kiosk in the same way as a Rubik’s Cube. This flexibility enables the users to create endless forms and typologies in order to suit ther desired functions.

. YEAR 2 PROJECT

NO. 4

.

Civic Centred Complex

A MULTI-PURPOSE COMPOUND:

CIVIC CENTRED COMPLEX

This outdoor public comlex was designed to include two seemingly opposite spaces, an extreme sport complex & a public library. As a result of the paradoxical nature of the functions, I used the concept of the ‘Yin-Yang’ as the basis in my design. As you can see, the design tries to achieve the separation & unity of the ‘Yin-Yang’ through the use of seperaate buildings that flow with each other & with the surrounding exterior.

. YEAR 2 PROJECT

NO. 3 .

The Bicycle Hyb

THE TRADA DESIGN COMPETITION:

THE BICYCLE HUB

The concept for this design comes from the abstract representation of the various stages of a wheel’s revolutionary motion.

CROSSOVER

CROSSOVER CROSSOVER

Building consists of a number of horizontal timber frames each rotated at a different angle. These frames carry a single ramp, that revolves around a main central hall, & goes all the way to the roof. The entire building, being a single vast open space, is naturally lit through the use of a single large sky-light.

. YEAR 2 PROJECT

NO. 2 .

Living On The Edge

THE YOUTH FOYER:

LIVING ON THE EDGE

The idea behind this design stems from its function as a foyer. The linear design serves as a figurative representation of the users’ journey of recovery & rediscovery. The various spaces are layed out in a linear form to create a circulation system that runs in parallel to the pedestrian routes on the street & the stream side footpath.

YEAR 2 PROJECT NO. 1

.

Placed, Displaced Housing

SMALL SCALE ECONOMY HOUSING:

PLACED, DISPLACED

The aim of this project was to design a low cost residence & to accommodate for as many functions as possible in such limited space. As a reslut of these various constricions, the design utilises an open plan design that uses multiple-levelling to seperate between the various functions. The design also revolves around a skylight, which acts as the main source of natural light & solar energy all around the house.

. EGYPT PROJECT NO. 2 .

The House of Oud

YEAR 3 DESIGN PROJECT:

HOUSE OF OUD

In this project, a handcraft workshop & visiting centre was required to be designed. My chosen craft was the manufacture of the oud. The octagon, a geometric representation of the oud’s sound hole, is used as a basis for a design module. This results in creating some sort of a beehive, which is in itself an analogy to Islamic Cairo’s various palaces. In order to create a stronger connection to the site, stone is chosen as the main material, which results in a massive monolithic look that’s csimilar to that of the nearby medieval city walls.

. EGYPT PROJECT NO. 1 .

Al - Diwan Library

YEAR 2 DESIGN PROJECT:

AL-DIWAN LIBRARY For this project, a themed library/bookstore was to be designed in down town Cairo. My chosen theme was ancient history, which is expressed in the use of vernacular architecture and stone. Stemming from the use of pure geometric shapes, a right-angled triangle based composition is created from mirroring the triangle at different angles. Each triangular space and floor corresponds to a different timeline in Egyptian history, with all floor open to a single atrium space, which is seen as soon as one enters through the main entrance hall.
