AREA HISTORY Umatilla County was founded in 1862 and was originally part of the bigger county of Wasco. The word Umatilla is a term the Native Americans used as describing “rippling water.” The Native American Indians are believed to have inhabited the area for 10,000 years. The Umatilla Indian Reservation was created in 1859, and 6.4 million acres of land were ceded to the Umatilla tribe. Within the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes were eventually formed, and Native American rights were reserved for fishing, hunting, and gathering foods and medicine. To this day, Native American tribes still gather roots on this property.
