In 1869 Camp Augur was established at what is now known as Lander, Wyoming. The camp offered protection to the wagon trains headed through the nearby south pass on the way to settle the west coast of the United States. By 1875 the camp became the town of Lander, and a few years later, it became the county seat in Freemont County, making Lander one of the oldest towns in the state. It eventually received access by the railroad and became known as the town “where rails end, and trails begin.” It has always had a strong presence in the agricultural and oil and gas industries. The years and advancements in society have allowed the town to change through the years. It has become a recreational destination for tourists on their way to Yellowstone National Park through Cody or Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The headgate for the entire ditch begins on the property offering first access to irrigation water.
