23rd Annual Gold Bullion Production Sale Catalog

Page 1

the quality goes in BEFORE THE BRAND GOES ON.

Welcome

to our 23rd Annual Gold Bullion Production Sale! As we gather for our annual sale this year it is with great excitement as we are entering into the most historic times ever recorded in the cattle industry. Most areas of the country have had some relief from years of drought and feed is abundant just in time to capitalize on high feeder calf prices and be rewarded for your determination and perseverance in this industry. However, for those still dealing with drought and the aftermath of fires and hurricanes, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Our sale is unique as we consist of five individual breeders that share the same vision and goals of producing functional cattle that work for all cattlemen. Cow families are the foundation, with an added emphasis on real performance, red meat yield, and added genetic merit marked by EPDs. While each breeder offers something a bit different, our group places a strong emphasis on structural soundness and we stand behind these bulls 100% with a four season feet and semen guarantee on all bulls in the offering. Our bulls are developed on a forage-based diet and run on 30 acres of Flint Hills grass for maximized exercise. This development system offers a major advantage to the longevity and durability of our bulls. Your success is important to us!

We encourage you to visit our website for more information about each individual breeder and for videos of the bulls at www.goldbulliongroup. com. As the same as in years past, our bulls are cataloged in sale order and any updates to catalog information will be available on a supplement

sheet on sale day. We do have a set of age advantage bulls that are sprinkled throughout the catalog as lots 5, 11, 12, 37, 38, 50, 51, 52, 81, and 82. This is a video auction and the bulls will not enter the ring to sell, so please take the time to evaluate them ahead of time. If unable to attend

sale day, bulls will be on display the day before the sale at the Schaake Farms Sale Facility or anytime at Schaake Farms by appointment. We always enjoy visiting one on one. Please contact Scott (785-456-4949), Shane (785-456-5014) or Troy Marple (785-250-0522) to view the bulls ahead of sale day.

We will again be offering commercial replacement females from dedicated Gold Bullion customers starting with Lot 83. The females are a mix of opens, breds and pairs that are all home raised and selected in partnership with our group directly from the heart of our customers’ herds. They will sell on video and delivery will be worked out between buyer and consigner. Rest assured; these are top quality replacements that you can build a cow herd around. We extend this offer for future years to our most loyal customers.

Special thank you to all our returning customers for your loyalty and trust in our breeding programs! For potential new customers, thank you for taking the time to review our offering and for your interest in the Gold Bullion Bull Sale and we look forward to seeing you the first Sunday in March!

INSURANCE

Caden McAfee • Kansas Insurance, Inc

913-416-0155

We highly recommend purchasing insurance if you do not take your bull on sale day, as cattle become the property of the buyer at the end of the sale.

SALE DAY INCENTIVES

SALE DAY DISCOUNT A $150 per bull discount is available to buyers who take their bull purchases home on sale day. We will feed all other bulls free until April 1, 2025 and then $5.00/day for up to May 1, 2025. Bulls must be picked up by May 1, 2025. VOLUME DISCOUNT You will receive a 5% discount if you purchase 3 or more bulls. If both discounts apply, buyer will receive the greater discount. Discounts do not apply to females selling.

DELIVERY + TRUCKING

Bulls will be delivered for free up to 100 miles from Westmoreland. We will work to help out-of-state buyers with the most economical trucking possible.

HEALTH + MANAGEMENT

All bulls have received IBR, BVD, P13, BRSV, 7-way blackleg; and at least two rounds of Ivermectin or Dectomax (for internal and external parasites). In addition, the bulls were vaccinated with Bovi-shield Gold 4+VL5 (new Lepto-Hardjo + four other strains). All bulls were tested for brucellosis. The fall bulls will have lower growth and carcass numbers as they were produced on grass until July and then brought along slowly. All bulls have been developed on 30 acres of Flint Hills dormant native grass to ensure structural integrity.

FERTILITY + BREEDING GUARANTEE

All bulls were fertility tested by Heartland Vet Clinic, Donald Sunday DVM of Holton, Kansas, and sell as guaranteed sound breeders for four breeding seasons. This guarantee does not include loss due to abuse, neglect, illness and/or acts of God (lightning, flood, etc). Full credit with be issued in the first breeding season (6 months) if a problem relating to bad feet or semen is experienced. Credit used will equal the purchase price minus the salvage value. Credit reduced 25% of that value for each breeding season completed. Feet will be covered for unsoundness not caused by illness, foot rot, or other bulls. A vet statement listing the condition of the bull to verify the problem with the bull is required to receive credit. We are confident in our bulls and the service they will provide! Please contact any group member if you have questions regarding this policy. We recommend retesting bulls before turning out to pasture. In the event a bull no longer passes a semen evaluation exam, the bull will be delivered back to the sale facility at the buyer’s expense to be revaluated by our veterinarian. Sale credit will be issued in the event the bull does not pass.

SEMEN INTEREST

Each owner is retaining 1/3 semen interest in all bulls unless otherwise announced. For most commercial programs, this will not interfere with the natural service use of the bull. It means that the breeder may want to arrange with the buyer to collect semen on a bull. Or, in the case that the bull proves to be a superior sire, and the buyer and/or breeder market semen on a bull, the breeder would share in 1/3 of the profit and get semen at cost.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES

CE CALVING EASE

percent of unassisted births from two-year old heifers

Example: For a CE EPD of 15, one would expect 10% more unassisted births than for a bull with an EPD of 5

BW BIRTH WEIGHT pounds of birth weight

WW WEANING WEIGHT pounds of weaning weight due to growth

YW YEARLING WEIGHT pounds of yearling weight due to growth

MCE MATERNAL CE

percent of unassisted births from calving daughters

MM MATERNAL MILK pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk

MW MATERNAL WW pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk and growth

CW CARCASS WEIGHT pounds of carcass weight

YG YIELD GRADE tenths of a yield grade

MB MARBLING percent of marbling score or %IMF

BF BACK FAT OR RIB FAT inches of carcass back fat thickness

REA RIBEYE AREA square inches of ribeye

API ALL PURPOSE INDEX

dollar per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario

TI TERMINAL INDEX

dollar per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario

GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS

Bulls with the ASA DNA logo have been DNA tested and have Genomic Enhanced EPDs for increased accuracy.

FAT THICKNESS measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inches. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat.

RIBEYE AREA measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more desirable yield grade numbers and a higher percent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inchest/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inches/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable.

% INTRAMUSCULAR FAT percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 2.0 to 4.5%.

YIELD GRADE EPDs for Yield Grade are calculated from ultrasound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for determining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The average range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.

Caring

CARING FOR

YOUR BULLS

When you get your performance-tested bull(s) home, observing these management practices will result in the best reproductive performance.

FEEDING

Remember, the bull is a yearling or long yearling and still has some growing to do. Feed the young bull well. Hay and grain plus a protein supplement will be adequate. You should feed five to ten pounds of grain and one to two pounds of protein supplement in addition to full feed of good quality hay from now until the start of the season. Continue to feed liberally so the bull will grow out well.

BREEDING SEASON

Plan to use the new bull in a restricted 45-60 day breeding season the first time. Observe him closely to be sure he is servicing and settling females.

NUMBER OF COWS

The yearling bull should be used on a minimal number of cows or heifers. The number should be governed by his age at the start of the breeding season. The following is a guide:

MANAGEMENT AND HOUSING

The bull should be kept in a well-fenced lot prior to and following the breeding season. A shed or other natural windbreak should be provided. Supply plenty of clean water and minerals free-choice. Treat routinely for lice and grub worms. Run bulls together with caution. Bulls of similar age which have bred cows together will usually work. Check for any unsoundness which might develop. Test annually for Brucellosis and Leptiospirosis. Vaccinate for IBR, PI3, BVD and Lepto.

BALANCE THE SCALES

Big cows come with big feed bills.

That’s why smart genetic selection pays off in the cow herd. Simmental-influenced cows are an average 74 lb. lighter at maturity than Angus-sired counterparts, according to a recent U.S. Meat Animal Research Center study.a,d

While Simmental is sized for more efficient gains, 20-year genetic trend lines also show the breed offers reliable calving ease, early growth and cow longevity. That’s a balanced herd built for profit.
