TRAINING TIPS with PHIL HAUGEN
A Horse Trainer’s Perspective I’ve been thinking a lot about this word lately. When it comes to training horses it is really important for me to keep a good perspective on each horse that I have in training. It is really a challenge at times when a trainer rides multiple horses every day to understand where each horse is in the training process. It is really easy to get frustrated when the next horse you ride doesn’t respond as well as the previous horse you’ve ridden. I know that I personally will get to thinking that they should all ride great and they should all understand the responses I’m asking for and be quick to find those responses. Unfortunately that’s not how it works. Just like us horses all learn at a different rate and how well they understand what responses we’re asking for will vary from horse to horse. When I started to understand this about the horses I have in training it made me understand my job so much better. You have to remember that every child in school learns at a different rate and understands what’s been presented to them in a different way. Horses are individuals and there’s no perfect program that works the same for all of them. I tell my students this because many times
6
they are frustrated with one horse because it’s not responding like they’re other horse is. That’s the biggest challenge with training for me, keeping that perspective that every day of training for each of the horses I have in training is going to be different for each of them. Each of those horses has different genetics, was born into a situation that is specific to them, and each has been handled differently from birth. Understanding this helps me to accept the fact that they are each individuals and I will train them with the same program but may have to present it in a little bit of a different way for each. I think that whether it’s pertaining to training horses or to the game of life, keeping a good perspective helps to make the choices that we make each day much clearer. Hopefully this helps you to look at perspective as a good thing when it comes to your horses and the game of life. Take care and have a great month of training.

The Importance of Provenance
One picture of Billy the Kid is worth over 2 million dollars. Another is hardly worth anything. The difference—provenance! According to the dictionary, the word Provenance is a noun which means: 1. ORIGIN or SOURCE; 2. The history of ownership of a valued object or work of art or literature. Why is provenance important to collectors? First and foremost, it is the act of being reasonably assured we know the origins of something in a recognized and generally accepted manner. Basically, being comfortable with the authenticity of an item. The more we are assured it is authentic, the more value the marketplace will allow for the item. So authenticity, which of course leads to value, are great reasons provenance is important to collectors. A fine example of just how important provenance is — is the Billy the Kid photo example. There was an authenticated photo (the one and only) which sold at auction in 2011 for 2.3 million dollars! It had solid provenance. There was a chain of ownership established back to the time it was taken. A copy of the photograph appeared publicly on Jan. 8, 1881, in the Boston Illustrated Police News. Sheriff Pat Garrett used the image twice in his book, “The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid.” The provenance was accepted as iron clad by the collecting world. On the other hand, there have been a number of other photographs which some claim are also of Billy the Kid. Some, even had pretty convincing circumstantial evidence they were Billy. But just because an old photo looks like him, does not convince the marketplace that it is him. Circumstantial evidence and looking similar to the authenticated photo is a good story, but a long way from convincing the marketplace to shell out big money for it. In this example, solid provenance is about a 2 million dollar difference of the value placed upon the items by the marketplace. Hallmarked vs. unsigned vintage and antique Native American jewelry is another great example. Most collectors of Native American silver know that much of it was not signed in the early days. As a matter of fact, from the 1970s to current, most Native jewelry is hallmarked, but before that, the opposite was true. Collectors still pay good money for the old, unsigned pieces though. The value is just based on the quality of a piece. However, there were a few people hallmarking early on. And those pieces now bring a premium because there is a form of provenance. For example, you can take two bracelets that look almost identical and both are quality work. However, one is signed by the Hopi silversmith Morris Robinson (one of the few guys who signed his work) and the other has no hallmarks. The signed one will bring at least twice as much in today’s market. The reason, we know who made it. We can tie it to a certain person in history. The other item may be just as good of quality as far as workmanship goes, but it is speculatory as to who made it. We can say it was most likely Native made based on the construction and style, but there is no where near the degree of certainty you get with the hallmarked piece. Old bits and spurs are another prime example. There were a lot of old, handmade bits and spurs from the late 1800s and early 1900s that were not hallmarked. However, some were.
24
Even though there are those who can identify (with a fair amount of accuracy) who a particular spur maker was by the style and engraving, items made by guys who were hallmarking back then will realize a premium in today’s marketplace. G.S. Garcia is a prime example. Most of the items produced in his shop were marked with the hallmark of his shop and they bring top dollar today because we know where they came from. We know he hired the best bit and spur makers available and they put the G.S. Garcia brand on the items. However, there were makers who produced just as nice of items, but unless those items were marked, the ones made and marked by the G.S. Garcia shop will bring more. Much more! The reason? There is provenance (a hallmark) tying the Garcia items to a certain point and place in history. It is not just speculation or an, “it sure looks like so-an-so’s work,” type of situation. The market responds accordingly. Besides the importance of provenance with regards to who made a particular item, historical event provenance is also very important. An item that can be tied to a certain event in history will always bring more than a like-kind item with no story behind it. But again, provenance is extremely important. Just because it has a good story, or the seller says it was used in a certain historical event, does not necessarily make it more valuable. The more evidence you have tying it to a particular event, the better the marketplace will respond with regards to value. A good example of this is a Colt Single Action Army revolver that had provenance tying it to the battle of the Little Big Horn. One with such provenance sold at auction a few years back for $460,000! Meanwhile, a likekind Colt SAA with U.S. markings and unknown historical ties will generally bring not more than $10,000 (depending on condition that number can vary greatly). It is easy to understand the importance of provenance as to the authenticity and value of a piece, but there is another question. Is the provenance real? Any time money is involved, especially when the amounts can be significant, there are people who try to manipulate the system. Fake hallmarks, fake documents, conjured up stories, hearsay, and much more is often passed off as potential provenance. So buyers/collectors should beware and do your due diligence. Educate yourself on the items you intend to collect. When possible, deal with reputable dealers, auctions and sellers. We always advise buyers/collectors to keep as much information with the piece as possible. At the very least, get a written receipt with a basic description and the amount paid. If possible, write down the history that came with it or print out any research you find on the item. It may help tremendously at some point in the future. Remember, don’t just buy the story, buy the item based on its provenance. With any type of collectible or historical item, the more iron clad the provenance, the more substantial value the marketplace will allow for it.

Perception is Everything by Ddee Haynes
34
As I headed out the door to the barn, I saw him. He was standing quietly at the opening of the barn gazing off into the distance. He looked so peaceful and proud standing there with the sun behind his back. The setting sun was casting his shadow out in front of him. The shadow was long and majestic, and it appeared as if he was lost in thought looking at his silhouette. As I stood quietly watching him, he seemed to sense my presence and turned quickly. For a split second our eyes locked and we shared a moment. Then he noticed the feed buckets I was carrying. The moment was lost, and the silence replaced by a loud bray as he came running towards me ready for his supper. The long silhouette vanished, replaced by my short, fat, long eared, carefree gentle mini donkey “Billy”. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that the shadow is how Billy sees himself, majestic, brave and perfect, just like God sees us! In a world full of “self -image” it is so easy to get caught up in how others see or perceive us. As a woman and a mother of two beautiful daughters I understand completely that we all want to look good, feel good, have the perfect outfit, good hair etc., However, when we let our “outside” appearance define our self -worth it is easy to lose our true self and forget the person inside. As I sat down to write my article it was heavy on my heart this idea of self-worth vs. self-esteem. How we see ourselves verses how others see us. So, what is the difference between self-esteem and self-worth? The key difference between self-esteem and self-worth is
that self-esteem refers to the appreciation that the individual has for his/her abilities. Self-esteem boosts his/her confidence making a person feel that they can do various tasks. On the other hand, self-worth can be defined as the value that an individual give to their self. Whether it be the rodeo arena or the arena of life, there is a fine line between self-worth and self-esteem. When we are winning or on top of the world it is very easy for both self-worth and self-esteem to be at an all-time high. But when our world is hectic, things aren’t going our way and it seems no matter what we do we cannot win, that is when the bottom falls out of both self-esteem and self-worth. As a rodeo mom, I have watched not only my daughters, but other rodeo athletes struggle with self- worth and self-esteem when they are not winning. I feel the mental game of rodeo is the toughest and most struggled with obstacle. A rodeo athlete can be mounted on the best horse, have spent hours upon hours in the practice pen fine tuning their skills and their horses to be totally prepared for their event. Yet, when they ride into the arena, or climb down into the chute, a rodeo athlete has less than 30 seconds from start to finish to put it all together. There are so many variables to be considered. Variables such as the ground in the arena, the animals (bulls, broncs, calves and goats) drawn that the competitors must either ride, rope or tie. Regardless of all the variables it is still up to the rodeo athlete to make the best of the situation. Having gone through losing streaks in life, I can testify, losing streaks are like winning streaks,
neither will last forever. However, riding the losing streak is a much harder ride. The devil of self-esteem and self-worth tends to step up and take the reins. It is important to focus on how we perceive our selves. Do we feel worthy and what does our reflection in the mirror say to us? A positive attitude along with knowing you are worthy, in my opinion, are the most lethal weapons available to fight off the devil and take back the reins. When times are tough, I remind myself, when it is hardest to pray and praise, that is when I need to pray and praise the most. Do not let a win or a loss define your “true” self- worth. Simply put, do not let a winning streak give you too much self-worth and self-esteem as it can all fall apart in less than 30 seconds. In the words of Tim McGraw, “always stay humble and kind”. Another great quote from my father, “never get to big for your britches”! In a nutshell, a true winner doesn’t quit when times are hard. A true winner gets back up and tries again, and again and again. To be a winner in life surround yourself with people who clap for you when you win and tell you to get up when you fall, and do not forget to do the same. Most importantly be like Billy, see yourself as a winner and always remember God sees all his children as majestic, brave and perfect, regardless, if we walk out of the arena with a gold buckle or a face full of dirt!

MINISTRIES
Same Storm, Different Perspective
I was reading the story in Mark 4 where Jesus had spent a day ministering and sharing life changing insight about the parables of the seed, the sower, the ground, and the kingdom of God. Then He tells the disciples to get into the boat and “Let us cross over to the other side.” During their journey a great storm rose up, but the disciples had a different perspective than Jesus. Isn’t it interesting that they can all be in the same storm but see it differently? It’s a lot like our nation at the moment, we are all going through the same storm, but what is your perspective? Mark 4:38-40 NKJV “But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to
Him, ‘Teacher; do you not care that we are perishing?’ Then He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, ‘why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?’” When I read this story, it reminds me of when I was a little boy. If a horse spooked or was acting up, it would make me nervous. The older I got and when I started training some horses, they went from just spooking to bucking, flipping over at times, pawing, running off, and the list goes on. Now that I’ve experienced life more and ridden lots of horses, what once would make me nervous doesn’t even phase me
because I know that I’ll get through it and that everything will be okay. Even if a horse goes to bucking or acting up, I know the storm will pass and I’ll get to the other side. That’s the way it was with these disciples. They had some experience on the water and had been through some storms, but this one was one they had never faced before and they were afraid. Jesus, on the other hand, knew who He was and that even though it was a big storm, it had to pass, and they would get through it in victory. I keep hearing the President say, “this to will pass,” and he is echoing what the apostle Paul shared with us. 2 Corinthians 4:18 NKJV “While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” Temporal means brief, fleeting, or in other words “this to will pass.” I want to encourage you to keep your eyes focused on the answer in God’s word. Keep praying for our country’s leaders, knowing that God is showing them answers and solutions. Know that “this to will pass.” We will get to the other side of this, and as individuals and as a country, we will be stronger. Remember the saying, “calm seas never made a great sailor.” Think of years past when it took months or even years to find solutions to problems of this size, but now they are finding solutions in days. We live in a great country, serve a great God, and this to will pass! Keep your perspective right, your faith connected, and your prayers going! Keep growing and keep going!
God Bless Trey Johnson

ANNOUNCEMENTS: We are not currently using the NHS-
RA online membership program but at the National level this system will be utilized for contestant bios. It is highly encouraged that all State Qualifiers to go ahead and type their bios in the MMS system before the State Finals should you qualify for Nationals. Please go to the NHSRA website: www.nhsra.org and click Member Login in the upper right hand corner and this will take you to the online membership program. See below from the National office: REMINDER: ALL NJHFR and NHSFR biographies are to be submitted through the online MMS. Each member can log on and do this themselves. ALL active and returning members have an account profile already setup, even if the State/Province is not currently utilizing the membership system. If you do not know your username, there is a ‘forgot username’ link underneath the login field. It will prompt you to enter the email address we have on file. We strongly encourage ALL members to access their profile and enter their bios now, so by the time NJHFR/NHSFR rolls around everyone has been given plenty of time and notified that ALL BIOGRAPHIES ARE SUBMITTED ONLINE!!! Like last year, ALL bios MUST be entered online in order for them to be ready by the National Finals announcers. The email address the National office has on file is the one used on their membership application. Contact your rodeo secretary if you are unsure what email was submitted.
Our Mission: Texas High School Rodeo Promote the sport of rodeo and expose its positive image to the general public; Preserve the Western Heritage; Offer a privilage of family bonding; Offer an opportunity of continuing education; Maintain the highest regard for the livestock
