TRAINING TIPS with PHIL HAUGEN

INVESTING IN YOURSELF This is a topic that often times comes up when we talk about improving in one area or another. The great thing about investing in yourself today is that you can do a lot of it for free. There is an abundance of information out there for you to acquire if you are willing to put forth the effort to attain it. The question I always ask myself when it comes to my horses, my business, or any other aspect of my life is this,”What change could I make that would make a huge difference in my results?” I always pick one thing to adjust, not ten things, if you try to make to many changes or adjustments at once it becomes confusing, especially for your horse, and overwhelming for both of you. Starting out just make a commitment to make a small change and then go from there, just get started doing something!! Investing in yourself is a mindset, and an attitude, that you have accepted the fact that you don’t know everything and that you’re making the commitment to always be trying to get better. It’s just human nature that we get stuck in our same old routine and we get 6

the same old results. Albert Einstein was famous for his definition of Insanity which was “Continuing to do things in the same way but expecting different results”. Just about every time I have a customer or client come and get help with a horse challenge it’s just a minor change in the way they’re asking for a response, which yields a much different result. Always be willing to learn, change, and get better. Also, don’t be afraid to fail, failure is what teaches us our best lessons in training and in life. Just accept the fact that not every decision you make or every choice you make is going to work out the way you planned, learn from it and go on. Embracing and learning from the struggles is what makes us better. Continue to invest in yourself and you will continue to get better with your horses, your career, and your life. Have a great month of training and God Bless!

THROUGH MY EYES

CODY CUSTER -

Grace Is...

In salvation we are forever restored to right standing. Grace given us is irrevocable from the Fathers standpoint. What He gives us is pure liberty to live our lives and He never turns His back on us. If turning His back on us was ever an option He’d have never given His Son as a sacrifice in order to redeem our spirit to His. There is some responsibility that comes along with the Grace given but even if we fail to be obedient, His Grace is not taken off the table and that has a way of making us breath easy. Our ways don’t change His ways. A lot of threats of losing our salvation placed on believers if we don’t have our lives worked out in a moral way keeps people thinking wrongly about themselves. The perfection is freely given in the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ (never taken back) and that is the good news of the Gospel. The parable of the prodigal son is a perfect demonstration of what the truth of Grace is. When the son asked for his inheritance the father willingly gave it to him knowing he was not mature enough to rightly handle it but he gave it anyway. He never wavered when the son came back with a warped idea of how to reconcile (the son wanted to be a servant) and the father proved to him that he was a son all along and ignored the sons false view of himself as a servant. (Luke 15:11-32) This might help you look at it through a different set of eyes. If you have a son nothing he could ever do can change the fact that he is your son. You can’t control your son, only guide him. It’s always his decision to follow your advice or not to but his behavior doesn’t change whose son he is. Either what was done in the Fathers heart at the cross and in the resurrection was forever valid or we’re following a fraud. Sonship is a gift to us. (John 1:12) The New Testament is given for instruction so that we might mature with what has been given to us, but the threat of it becoming invalid comes from humans who don’t understand what Grace really is. Father is continually speaking to our hearts to guide us but He doesn’t control our will. From the beginning He has let people do it their own way until repentance (a change in thinking) had it’s effect on them. Grace has everything to do with responsibility being given to us and the fact that He is the one Who covers Us. We don’t cover Him. Father is not a magician who pulls things out of His hat to entertain our disobedience, but He won’t throw in the towel either. He’ll reveal to us of areas in our life that need attention and provide the means to do so. His Spirit is the means we have to work out the places He reveals to us. If His heart is for us to live an abundant life don’t you think that He’d cover our areas of lack and give us time to choose His ways. I will continue to ask Him to show me where I’ve missed and then I’ll keep going forward with Him knowing that as His son I can’t miss and neither will you. Not because of us but because of Him.

GOD BLESS Cody Custer 16

Collector’s Corner

Condition

When buying items online, a buyer relies heavily on pictures. They also rely on the description added by the seller (or seller’s agent). The condition of an item, especially when it comes to collectibles, is a large factor in value. So it is important for sellers to understand the condition, or any defects an item may have when describing it for potential buyers. Good pictures are a must when buying and selling online, but so is an accurate condition report. Over the years, there has become a pretty universal language (or basic categories) that dealers use when describing condition. Although it can vary some from seller to seller, it is a good idea to “learn the language.” Below is a list of some different categories we use and a definition of what is meant when we use that particular description. New - New in box (NIB) - New old stock (NOS) — There are a few different ways of saying it, but what this means is that it has never been purchased by a customer. This means it is, or has been, owned by a store or dealer its entire life. Even if it is fifty years old (NOS) it means that no end user, customer, collector, etc. has owned it during its lifetime. Excellent - Like New — This means it is just like new and would be like the items in the category above, but it has been owned by a customer or end user. Things that commonly fall into this category are items that have been purchased and left in their original packaging or put on a shelf or in a drawer its entire life and have no damage or wear of any kind. They are just like “New.” Some have argued that it is still “New” when in this kind of condition, but technically it is pre-owned, even though it may be in “like new” condition. Very Good — This is an item that is almost like new (see above), but maybe there is some shelf wear or a little bit of use showing. These items are still highly desirable as far as condition goes, but they do not quite qualify as “excellent” or “like new.” Good — This is how we would categorize an item that is pretty average for its age. It is not excellent and on the other end of the spectrum, it is not used up or worn out either. It shows moder20

ate use, but not abuse. An item which falls in this category or higher typically is the most desirable to collectors. Pretty Good - Fairly Good — This item is almost as good as the “Good” category, but it shows just a little more use. Maybe it has been used a little more than average. It is in below average condition for its age. However, it has not been abused. Fair — This is an item that shows wear. It still functions, but not perfectly. In some cases, it still may look ok, but it has damage or above average wear. Poor — This item is worn out, damaged, broken, not in working order, etc., etc.. Items in this category are often used for parts, rustic decorations, re-purposing, etc.. We try to break things down into these different categories. Some sellers choose to use more, or less, descriptive categories. These categories are for general condition description. We also try to point out anything that “stands out” and we feel needs to be separately pointed out. Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words (so they say), but if you put a picture of damage up and do not also disclose it in the written description as well, you are opening yourself up to that old “I didn’t see the picture” line. Of course, the person may not have read it either, but having both a good picture and an accurate condition report is a must in today’s selling climate where online purchase are now the “norm” and not the exception.

The board has reached out to all contacts at our currently scheduled locations as well as contacts at other locations. After exhausting all options on securing available venues to host our current rodeos we have been unsuccessful. Due to the uncertainty of the times and no guarantee that we can produce a full series, with heavy hearts, the board voted to cancel the 2020 season. All sponsorships, entry fees, and memberships will be refunded. Cowboy Times subscriptions will continue to members and will be paid for by the association. Sponsors will be contacted to see if they wish to roll their sponsorship over to the 2021 season. Please feel free to reach out any board member if you have any questions. Expect Opportunities!

Your opportunities aren’t over! God is situating things, people, resources, for your benefit. The word OPPORTUNITY means a combination of circumstances favorable for the purpose. So we need to lay hold of the reality that God is setting things up that are favorable for our purpose. You have a purpose and God wants to help you fulfill it. In order for this to take place it will take the right opportunities. But when the opportunities present themselves, be ready to act, be ready to seize them because if a person isn’t ready when they come then it’s too late to get ready. If we are to expect opportunities to come our way then we should be ready. Another definition for the

30

OPPORTUNITY is a good occasion to advance oneself. Well the number one person we want to advance is God, but He loves us so much that He wants to help us advance in life. When we have the right behavior when opportunities come then it will produce the right results in our life. OPPORTUNITY also means the best time for anything. God knows when the best time for something to take place in our life is. He knows the best time for the dream, the promotion, for that relationship and for things to come together for His will to be accomplished on earth as it is in Heaven. So let’s trust His timing and His wisdom. Let’s believe and expect for His will to come to pass at the right time.

Habakkuk 2:3 says, “For the vision is yet for an appointed time and it hastens to the end [fulfillment]; it will not deceive or disappoint. Though it tarry, wait [earnestly] for it, because it will surely come; it will not be behind hand on its appointed day.” Let’s know that the OPPORTUNITIES that God is bringing our way all fit together to help us fulfill our purpose. They are good occasions to advance Him and to advance our life as well. These opportunities will be at the best time for things to come together. Our God is a good God, and He wants good opportunities for us. Matthew 7:11 says, “If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father Who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give good and advantageous things to those who keep on asking Him!” That sounds like OPPORTUNITY to me. A lot of times people don’t think that they have the opportunities that other people have, but in reality God gives everyone opportunities. The difference is that some people are ready when they appear and other people aren’t ready. Which one are you? OPPORTUNITIES are coming, so expect them and be ready when they present themselves!

Keep growing and keep going!

God Bless Trey Johnson

See below from the National office: REMINDER: ALL NJHFR and NHSFR biographies are to be submitted through the online MMS. Each member can log on and do this themselves. ALL active and returning members have an account profile already setup, even if the State/Province is not currently utilizing the membership system. If you do not know your username, there is a ‘forgot username’ link underneath the login field. It will prompt you to enter the email address we have on file. We strongly encourage ALL members to access their profile and enter their bios now, so by the time NJHFR/NHSFR rolls around everyone has been given plenty of time and notified that ALL BIOGRAPHIES ARE SUBMITTED ONLINE!!! Like last year, ALL bios MUST be entered online in order for them to be ready by the National Finals announcers. The email address the National office has on file is the one used on their membership application. Contact your rodeo secretary if you are unsure what email was submitted.
