OBJECTIVE

Design a three to four story hostel located in an existing building.

PERIMETERS

Hostel must sleep about 50 people, contain a restaurant, reception/ lobby, meeting areas, laundry, kitchenettes, and study areas. Account for universal standards within the design as well as ADA compliant features. First Floor Reflected Ceiling

CONCEPT

OTR creates a place of fun and adventure that builds up the city. Taking that theme on the inside, what better thing to do while climbing your way twhrough Cincinnati than to legitimately climb your way through the buildings. With adventure and playfulness in mind, creating a building built around a rock wall is both a stay and play destination.

OBJECTIVE

Work as a group to create a reuse for the old Terrace Plaza Hotel located in the business district of Cincinnati. Program is not specific but emphasis must be put on universal dwelling units that are ADA compliant as well as a detailed reception area, and branding for the entire project proposal.

GOALS & FOCUS

Design a unit that is universal to the neighborhood and not just the business district. Refrain from removing too much of the existing structure as well as keeping the brick facade due to it’s historical context. Honor the Gourmet and continue it’s use as a 5 star restaurant.

CONCEPT

Revitalizing within the business district is the central focus of Apex. Signifying a higher value through space and form, Apex stands to realize a greater understanding of demand, focus, thought, and innovative reasoning. A vertical drive is centered around a higher perspective, as the user will engage within a space designed for the wellness and happiness of the working class.

Union Station Square ABOUT THE PROJECT For our first semester project of graduate school we worked individually to create a multi-use high rise building on a given site in Chicago. We worked alongside two members of Goettsch Partners in which we visited in Chicago and they attended two charettes and our final presentation here at Miami. Total the building was a 1.5 million square foot project consisting of an office tower, a residential tower, underground parking, and a podium to connect the two though a retail portion. We put focus on the office core’s and technical details that go into the circulation of large towered buildings. The podium was a secondary focus in which we emphasized a way to unite the components on the site.

ABSTRACT Chicago is full of architectural wonders. My inspiration for a unique element was the idea of terraces. I wanted to keep my residential units focused near the southwest where it was more quiet, and my office located facing Union Station where the busy city starts. I focused on keeping it busy where it was already, and more quiet on the opposite site for the enjoyment of the residents. Once my building began to take shape, I pocketed my retail in a terrace like fashion and together created my design. I used the idea of terraces not only to reincorporate landscape and nature into my design but also to give the retail usable outdoor spaces as well and to serve as a connection between my two tower elements. Since Union Station is such a prominent building, I used the idea of a modern day art deco. I wanted to create a modern structure that also preserved the history around it as well as incorporating the architecture of the surrounding buildings.

EDGE Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning FIRM OVERVIEW

EDGE is an integrated team of planners, landscape architects and development consultants with a mission to create economically, socially and environmentally impactful solutions while implementing thoughtful planning and purposeful design.

MY ROLE

During my time at EDGE I spent the majority of my summer internship working with the City of Whitehouse in designing and developing new wayfinding signage for a specific business district as well as at other locations throughout the city. During my time I also modeled in SketchUp to digitally build streetscapes and detailed residential homes. Beyond SketchUp I also worked in AutoCad to update numerous library details and office standards. Periodically I attended construction and form based code meetings to better understand project development. I also spent some time in project documentation as well as marketing.

WHITEHOUSE VILLAGE PARK

During my winter stay I continued some detail library cleanup but spent most of my time modeling a park for the City of Whitehouse using Sketchup based off of a drawing set on Autocad. 8/19

KALNOW RESIDENCE

For my work on the Kalnow project, I was to model the resident’s home as well as the neighbor’s in Google SketchUp. I was given a rough outline of the perimeter of the home and used imagery as well as google earth to model the house as accurately as I could. The model was then incorporated with a landscape model to visually show the renovation design to the client. 7/19

SUMMIT STREET RENNOVATION

As one of my most rewarding projects with EDGE, I had the pleasure of working on the Summit Street renovation, a main roadway in downtown Toledo. The renovation proposal included new lighting, improved crosswalks, additional benches, and plantings. As well as a new art installation and on-street parking, making it easier to access dining and retail spaces. I aided in the renderings by modeling the entire strip in SketchUp, making the existing buildings and streetscape as accurate as possible. Alongside a site visit and google maps, I was able to execute a model of downtown to be added to the proposed street. 8/19

WHITEHOUSE BUSINESS PARK SIGNAGE

Getting started at EDGE I spent a lot of time doing work for the City of Whitehouse. The city has been in a long term relationship with the company to redesign their wayfinding and branding of the city. My first role in this process was to render a wayfinding sign for a business district in the city. After a few months I am proud to see the signage up and constructed on the site. 7/19

Santulan Architecture

FIRM OVERVIEW

Santulan is a boutique architecture firm specializing in multifamily and mixed-use projects in the Denver metro area.

MY ROLE

The role of an architectural designer requires me to assist in drawing sets for all levels of submittals, coordinate with consultants, design unit layouts as well as elevation facades, and meet with clients to portray ideas and discuss project specifications and deadlines. In my two years at Santulan, I had hands-on experience from the very beginning of the project, using hand sketches, precedent images, and Sketchup to model a building design for the client. Once approved, I worked closely with the PM to fully understand and execute a full CD set from start to finish. I worked intently on floor plans, elevation designs, section plans, architectural details, and coordinating the work of consultants on the project.

PARKER DOWNTOWN

The 243 unit project comprises of two separate sites located on either side of Sulphur Gulch. With frontage on Main Street and PACE Center, this project will be a Gateway to Historic Downtown Parker. The North building hugs the Main Street and Pine Drive frontages creating a vibrant and active streetscape. A brick column arcade is utilized to create shaded indoor-outdoor spaces along the street to benefit the retail/restaurant uses on the ground floor. The stately brick architecture benefits this prominent location and fits well with Parker’s historic https://viewer.autodesk.com/id/dXJuOmFkc2sub2JqZWN0czpvcy5vYmplY3Q6YTM2MHZpZXdlc…MzExLnJ2dA?sheetId=N2U5MzYxYmQtY2VlOC00OTM1LWFmNDEtY2UyYzE1NjU4YzZlLTAwMDdiNzEz heritage. The South building expertly engages with the site topography to cut in a subgrade parking garage and create a massive landscaped podium with a pool deck and western views for miles. A strong connection is made between the ample outdoor amenities and the bank of the Sulphur Gulch. Both buildings have their own roof decks to take advantage of the spectacular 180 degree views.

WORK EXAMPLES

Much of my time spent at Santulan was working on CD sets for projects. I became very familiar with unit plans, architectural details, and enlarged plans such as kitchen and bathroom layouts.

GALILEE

The 244 unit project consists of three wood frame buildings, one main 5-story building and two three-story walk-ups. The main building houses an extensive club house, with four levels of dwelling units above. The building sits prominently on Parker Road and is located conveniently near a major bike trail, welcoming pedestrians and encouraging an active lifestyle. The main building expertly engages with the site topography to cut in a subgrade parking garage and create a massive landscaped podium with a pool deck and western GALILEE CHURCH SITE views. The walk-ups compliment the overall plan, adding diverse housing options. This project is complicated in architecture and size, incorporating three building types alongside bay windows, the large podium, and a roof deck. 6
