AN HONOUR AND A PRIVILEGE SUPPORTERS LIAISON MANAGER JIM HANNAH RETIRES AFTER 30 YEARS OF SERVICE FOR THE CLUB HE HOLDS SO CLOSE TO HIS HEART. INTERVIEW: ALICE HEDWORTH • PHOTOS: KIRK O’ROURKE

L

AST month it was announced that Jim Hannah, the club’s loyal Supporters Liaison Manager, would be retiring after working for Rangers for three decades in a number of roles. Jim, a hugely popular figure with fans around the world, started with the club in the late 1970s as a turnstile operator before moving into the ticket office in the middle Eighties, where he worked until 2002 as Ticket Operations Manager. He also worked for a year in project management, helping in the development of the smart card

system currently used at the club today, before taking up the role of Supporters Liaison Manager and Tours. His contribution at the club over 30 years will not be forgotten and everyone at Rangers would like to wish Jim the best of luck and a long and happy retirement. Before he packed his things the lifelong bluenose was more than happy to answer a few questions about his remarkable career with the Light Blues in a place he knows only too well, Ibrox Stadium’s Trophy Room.

INTERVIEW BY: LINDSAY HERRON

IN A SPROTT OF BOTHER GERS LEGEND DAVIE WILSON WAS IN HAMILTON’S DUG-OUT WHEN ACCIES PRODUCED A REMARKABLE SCOTTISH CUP UPSET AT IBROX IN JANUARY 1987.

THE HAMILTON PLAYERS CELEBRATE THEIR FAMOUS IBROX WIN

D

AVIE WILSON is undoubtedly one of Rangers’ most revered and celebrated players who was a key protagonist in the all-conquering side of the early 1960s. The diminutive winger with the shock of blond hair was at the heart of 11 major trophy successes under manager Scot Symon in an eight-year period and was also part of the Rangers team that reached the 1961 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final. He is only credited with two League Championship medals - 1960/61 and 1962/63 - but he played 15 of the 34 games in the 1958/59 season and 16 in the Treble season of 1963/64 - more than enough these days.

DAVIE WILSON

Wilson, now 78, lifted the Scottish Cup five times in his glittering career and also won the League Cup twice playing beside the likes of Jimmy Millar, Ralph Brand and Jim Baxter. He was also a phenomenal goalscorer, netting

157 goals in 373 appearances, and he is only one of two players since the Second World War to have scored six goals in one match, clobbering Falkirk in a 7-1 victory on 17 March 1962. Supporters of a certain vintage

reckon he played in the best Rangers team of all time – Ritchie; Shearer, Caldow; Greig, McKinnon, Baxter; Henderson, McMillan, Millar, Brand and Wilson. However, what many of them may not remember is

Ibrox - It’s All in the Name

THIS season in the matchday programme Rangers historian David Mason will continue to provide fascinating stories from our great club’s illustrious past.

T

O football fans around the world, the name ‘Ibrox’ is synonymous with Rangers Football Club and nothing more. Since we made this part of Govan our home 130 years ago, it has been the focal point for the community and even the Underground station formerly known as Copland Road, has also been renamed simply ‘Ibrox’. Such has been the impact of Rangers that if you ask a Glaswegian, or even a Govanite, to tell you of Ibrox, they

will relate the story of the magnificent stadium towering over Edmiston Drive – not the district. It is against the

backdrop that I have been frequently asked through the years – was the stadium named after the area or vice versa?

The Last Word with John Brown

I

BROX legend John Brown started his career with Hamilton Accies, making over 100 appearances for the club before joining Dundee and then Rangers in January 1988 for £350,000. Bomber, as he is known, now works in the Gers’ commercial department and he

is looking forward to watching today’s Scottish Cup quarterfinal tie between two of his former clubs. We caught up with the Hall of Fame inductee this week to get his thoughts on the 90 minutes coming up and who he believes will be the key men for the Light Blues…

The important thing for Rangers is that every player steps up to the plate because I’ve no doubt it will be a battle against Hamilton. For me, Kenny Miller has been so influential with his experience and he has scored three goals in the previous Scottish Cup rounds against Motherwell and Morton.

BOMBER EXPECTS KENNY MILLER TO BE AN IMPORTANT PLAYER FOR RANGERS TODAY
