Newport Harbor Art Museum Looks to Fill Docent Positions As It Prepares for Expansion
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The Newport Harbor Art Museum (NHAM) seeks docents to help guide visitors through the galleries as well as its new American folk wing, which will open doors to the public for the first time on Nov. 2, said volunteer coordinator Hillary Wolf. Docents must be at least 18 years of age and are required to attend a coffee reception at the museum on Sept. 27 at 10 a.m., said Wolf. Those interested must make a one-year commitment and also need to attend a mandatory two-weekend training session on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, and Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12. Docents and their family receive free admission and can use the facilities at 75 percent off, said Wolf. The John and Barbara Suttmiller Wing named after the couple that donated $20 million, features two pieces by Norman Rockwell and three by Grandma Moses. The art collection is valued at $235 million. The oldest piece is a handmade rocking horse from 1635, valued at $3.5 million, said museum curator Joao Mejia. Art donor Elizabeth Harrison, who served on the NHAM board for 30 years, is the last surviving member of the Harrison family, who has been collecting American folk art for over one hundred years, said NHAM chairman of the board, Michele Doernte. Admission to the museum costs, $8 for adults, $4 for students and seniors and free for children under 12 years of age. Membership to the museum is $1,000 a year.
