“Mother Will Build the Wall…”

This house was once a woman

There but seen as fragments, with only a glimpse of her moving fingers circulating within the linear gaps in the kitchen cabinets

And during dinner parties, her presence was frequently felt but left unnoticed; everyone else could smell the pungent aroma of her signature grandma’s chicken cooked in the oven But where is she?

Oven rang its alarm, leaving smoke throughout the entire house as the food got burnt

And as everyone left the party, this house was once a wife

The wife who slept in the same bed as her partner [the bed one hundred people sat and spilled wine on]

The partner people have their precedents of

The wife who has always been referred to as his partner [but never herself]

She was never known to be herself but merely an extension of her husband She was never the woman she used to be

She was a tool, an object

The courtyard was a pausing moment

It was the only time she could look straight at her kid's room at the back of the house without looking down

Within the gaps of the stones

She was a mother, a pride of hers

And when this house once used to be a mother

At every dinner party, the kids would have a cheeky peek under the curtains, looking up to the silhouettes of people roaming around holding drinks With some uncontrollable laughter and high-pitched giggles

But between the blurry roaming crowds, the mother stood still looking down at the louver-shut windows, hoping to see a glimpse of her kids moving around

She has her grips as stiff as muhammad ali, anxious as she couldn’t see where her kids reside within that separate building her husband designed

The thought of escaping has always remained as pitches

Could she escape? Did she really want to escape from that goddamn house?

Until the passing of the husband

She has no one else to sleep with in the lounge room

Nothing else to hold onto in both of her pockets

Nothing else to cook other than Aldi’s microwaveable butter chicken

And nothing else to look after but her kids

Maybe the escapism never happened in the first place

It’s left as a thought that swings by every morning breakfast, every dinner party, every ironing session…

Instead, she reclaimed her land

From the lands she felt confined

Offering a different treatment of power of ownership of belonging of watching

Fuck the husband. Sorry. He’s dead. Of course, she grieved

A faint memory,

There are some parts of the house that reminded her of home

Maybe it was the gloomy grey bricks

Maybe it was the kitchen cabinets

The courtyard

The void

The power vacuum

After all the courtyard is now a passing moment

And in some living room somewhere, this house has its portrait hung upon the grey bricks of the walls that heard, And whispered,

“Mother will build the wall…”

As what is left for her is her love Her world Her kids

Loving unconditionally in a watch tower contained of voids, this house remains a woman, a wife, and a mother

Rania Sidanta (b. 2002) This House is Escaping its Architecture, 2023 Digital Work

This house fights for authority. It disobeys its architect for the freedom that was stolen when its first wall was drawn. This project imagines an architecture of a conflicting dialogue between the system and the oppressed.

1:50 @ A3 This house is not yours. The uncanny arises in the compacted staircase and a door with a reflection of your psyche. Perceiving a self-portrait in a property that isn't yours is unhomely enough to welcome you. But that alluring door handle tells you otherwise. This is an entrance that sparks a dilemma.
