REACTS!

Our users react to the October Edition of RAOA Monthly! ”Wow you guys work so ridiculously hard on these monthly issues and the sub and it really shows. So many highlights, activities, shtories, interviews, pictures and more! It’s really amazing what you guys (and everyone else!) do for the community. It’s honestly... touching really...at least for me that this community exists and that I get to be a part of it... aw man... i’m getting emotional and teary eyed. - dancemasterv

"Your horoscope is truly psychic! it told me that I, as an aquarius, should do something spacey (like Star Trek, which I seriously considered except everyone does it all the time) or something 1920s which is actually what I have been contemplating all year and finally decided on doing three weeks ago!! Psychic, just plain psychic. - youreillusive

“I loved the Amazon Deals section and the Fall Fashion, but they were all .com links. How about some .ca and .uk links for the next issue?” -glanmiregirl

“I’m not a participant in this sub, I lurk mainly because reading the reactions makes my day a bit happier sometimes. This is the first time I’ve read the magazine, and it most definitely brightened up by lunch-time redditing! Good going guys.” -livlov89

“I was surprised to read about megadeth in this issue. :D Good to know there’s other metal-heads out there!” -Rubenick “I love how you guys really take the time to make it look awesome! Especially removing all the backgrounds from Halloween pictures, I know what a pain that is! Great issue like always! - geniabeme

“The RAoA Monthly just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the great work! It was great to see a Breast Cancer awareness section with myths and such.” -unicorndanceparty

“I’m going to come up with even crazier shit to say so I can be quoted. en I’ll feel ~famous~.” -watsoned

Crafty Ideas for Crafty RAoAers: Glitter Banner What You’ll Need: 4” chipboard letters school glue 1” artists’ brush glitter plastic container

spoon wax paper hemp twine scissors hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: Apply Glue Use 1” artists’ brush to liberally apply school glue to entire front and sides of letter. The glue should still be wet when applying glitter so work in sections, if necessar necessary.

14

Step 2: Sprinkle Glitter Pour glitter into container and use spoon to sprinkle over letter. Apply more glue and repeat on areas where glitter did not adhere. Set finished letter on wax paper and allow dr to dry.

Step 3: Touch Up Glitter Once first coat of glitter is dry, brush glue over bare spots and apply more glitter. Repeat this process until letter is fully coated.

Step 4: Glue Letters Once dry, use hot glue gun to affix letters to hemp twine. Space the letters approximately one halfinch apart. Leave fourinch spaces between words. Loop twine on each end to hang. This craft idea is from www.hgtv.com. 15

18 For 18 Esch issue 18 different users will be featured for 18 different reasons. Some users you may know and others you won’t. Let’s take the time to get to know some of the wonderful people in this community! Who knows you could be selected to be featured next! 1. LogicalyImpaired (Tommy) - TT’s Mashup King It might be hard for you all to catch Tommy around seeing as how much he loves to be outdoors. He loves doing all sorts of things in nature such as Geocaching and precious stone collecting! He also loves to travel around to just about anywhere. He has earned his title of Mashup King with his constant display of new and interesting mashups he plays in Turntable. In real life, music is no stranger to him. He works part time at a concert venue where he gets to see tons of concerts for free! RAoA is important to him, he says “It is a place where I can go to meet cool people, make friends, have a good laugh, make someone smile, and know that there are still good people in this life.” You can catch Tommy over on Turntable during the California work hours.

2. Nikky2069 (Nichole) - RAoA’s Mini Bomb Expert Nichole is a long time RAoA user, she says “It makes me really happy to put a smile on someone else’s face. I’ve been here for a year and I can’t imagine staying away for long.” She certainly lives up to that. Some of you may or may not know that after this most recent Amazon Bomb she held her own miniature bomb. When she’s not spending her time on RAoA she loves crafting. She loves making things for people and loves helping others - She says it gives her a sense of purpose! She looks forward to the future and hopes she gets to see all the crazy technology we accomplish. Be sure to check out her posts on the sub and maybe even catch her in some late night CAH!

3. P0rtable_Panda (James) - The Famous Dinosaur Man James thinks he’s pretty boring but I think we could prove him wrong. He says if he could go anywhere in time he would “Want to go hang with dinosaurs and play poker or whatever it is dinosaurs do.” It’s no wonder why he’s our famous Dinosaur Man - he was on the cover of the first RAoA Monthly dressed in a dinosaur costume! He loves video games, movies, music and has “too many” gerbils. He also has said that his dream job would be to get paid to live life - if that were the case I bet he’d be rich! RAoA has changed James’ life forever. He joined when he was in a really low place and since then he’s made some life changing friends! James is a mod over on TinyChat be sure to stop by and give him a rawr!

4. LobsterOrifices (Michael) - The Tall Guy Michael was also known as lobstercrevices before this user name! He often puts together some late night CAH games for us all. Though it may seem like he hasn’t been around RAoA for that long, he fits right in with all of us! He says he loves the kindness and generosity from everyone on the sub. When asked to list cool things about him, he said he’s tall and tall people rule - but our readers want to know, just how tall is he? He wants to be a voice actor - maybe he’ll be the voice of the next popular Disney character! He also wants to travel back to the beginning of time to see how it all began. Keep an eye out for his posts on the sub and say hello!

5. kooazdood (Kevin) - TC’s Jokester I think we can all tell how much fun Kevin is by the picture he chose to be featured! He loves RAoA. With his work schedule it’s hard for him to find time to socialize and RAoA helps. There’s always someone around for him to hang out with. He even refers to RAoA as his extended family! Kevin is so cool he gets paid to play video games, but his dream job is actually IT. He wants to be in charge of everything - sounds like a man with a plan. Because of a recent book discovery he’s been thinking a lot about time travel. He says if he could, he would go back to New Zealand in the 40s to figure out why his grandparents left and try to convince them to stay. Though, he also thinks that this would create a paradox and destroy his entire existence. You can catch Kevin over on TinyChat when he’s not working!

16

18 For 18 CON’T 6. heyredridinghood (Shannon) - Video Game Princess Shannon aspires to be a Pokemon Master and is also the Hero of Hyrule! She has created many things her entire life and loves art! She makes pretty sweet duck noises, loves comics, and loves thrifting. She is currently living her dream job by teaching kids all about graphic narrative, but also would love to be a story board artist for a video game! She views RAoA as her safe zone. She feels as though she’s never judged and RAoA is a place of honesty and generosity. She is so grateful to have found this place. Be sure to look out for some of her amazing artwork whenever she posts it to the sub!

7. Yokuo (Michael) - Media Wizard Michael has been with us for about a month now, but it certainly does not seem that way at all! He embodies the true meaning of what RAoA is all about. RAoA is his favorite place on the internet and he loves the community. He loves being there for everyone and knowing that they’ll be there for him. Michael is a graphic and media designer, he also knows video editing, and is a freelance photographer! He hopes to be a graphic and multimedia designer and become his own boss. He loves the cold weather - the colder the better! In fact, he also said that sometimes when he goes out into the sun and the sunshine hits his eyes it causes him to sneeze! Be sure to check the daily thread for some of his posts!

8. BeautifulVictory (Shana) - Michael Buble’s Biggest Fan Shana is one cool person! She loves giving and thinks that’s what RAoA is really about. Whether it’s giving a physical gift, giving time, giving advice or just giving someone a person who will sit and listen. She loves Christmas for the same reasons and RAoA is like Christmas all year round! Shana loves musicals and Broadway shows. She’s met Michael Buble 5 times and some people think it’s a problem , but she thinks no such thing. She loves Hello Kitty, big bows, cats, and Will Ferrell. When she’s not on RAoA, she loves drawing and painting. If she could, she’d like to go back to the 60s in America. She thinks that there was so much going on in that time period and would love to witness the drastic changes in pop culture. When you see Shana around take the time to say hello!

9. nerdybirdie (Kristen) - The Bird Expert Much related to her user name, Kristen loves birds. Her pet parrot, Pickle, is her best friend. She has worked with all different types of birds a good part of her life and she’d love to get paid to help birds as her dream job. She has handled birds of all different kinds including two types of eagles, kestrels, six different types of owls, and a turkey vulture. She loves animals in general. Last year she got the chance to trap bats which lead to a scary ER experience in the middle of nowhere! YIKES! She also has an adventurous side. She’s gone skydiving and would love to go again. She’s memorized 67 numbers to pi, she has hyper-extended joints, and can make herself belch, which she believes this all to be very useful! Kristen thinks RAoA encompasses all acts of kindness. Whether it’s random, planned, spontaneous, or silly - she loves it all! Next time you see her ask her any and all questions you may have about birds!

10. quick_quip_whip (Kori) - The Wittiest of All Kori is an incredibly witty person! She earned her camp nickname, Mockingbird, because of her sarcastic personality. She’s a lifelong girl scout, loves painting and reading. She says RAoA gives her the outlet she needs sometimes to display her frustrations. It keeps her from having an “internal brain combustion moment”. Kori’s dream job would be to work for UNIT protecting the Earth. Her reasoning for this? “There’s no need to rely on ancient time lords.” She would love to see the future which is fitting with her dream to work for UNIT. Next time you see her make it a point to say “hi, how are you?”!

17

18 For 18 CON’T 11. White_Tiger_ (Kevin) - The Wildcat Kevin loves tigers and cats, which is apparent in his username! He volunteers for an animal rescue called Lost Paws of Lancaster, where he takes care of lots of kitties and helps find them good forever homes. He would love to run his own tiger preserve or wildlife park. He also plays disc golf in his spare time. He’s happy in the present and wants to live for today. Although, he wouldn’t mind going back to the 40s or 50s because he’s always been interested in that time period. According to Kevin, RAoA means family. We are all different but come together like one huge dysfunctional family. You can catch Kevin around in the mornings, stop by and play some music with him on Turntable!

12. suckinonmytitties (Kelsey) - RAoA’s Beekeeper Kelsey is still kind of new to RAoA but hasn’t found any trouble making herself at home. She says RAoA has shown her there’s still people out there who will be around to catch you when you fall down. She loves chocolate milk, has never broken anything, loves going to concerts, and is afraid of going down escalators. She recently became a beekeeper and has seven hives that she runs on her college campus! She has three ferrets and a dog that she lives with alongside her boyfriend and six other roommates! Woah, full house! She also cannot wait to graduate next year so she can get her physical therapy degree and start helping people become happy and healthy! Keep an eye out for Kelsey on the sub!

13. Glanmiregirl (Jen) - Sarah Jane Smith Jen says RAoA is the only place she’s ever posted where she can be herself and be accepted for that! She loves feeling like she’s part of this community and knows that she can post anything without being judged. She knows everyone in the community will sincerely try to help her with her problems. Jen has a cat, a turtle, two teenaged children, and a husband that she’s never bothered to actually marry! She says in grade school her imaginary friend’s name was Tom Baker, the 4th doctor, and she used to pretend she was Sarah Jane Smith. Her dream is to be a wildlife photographer. Be sure to give Jen a warm hello next time you see her!

14. paradoxikal (Ashlee) - Movie Enthusiast Ashlee knows RAoA is just full of some really cool genuine people. In fact, she’s even met some of them at the Philly meetup and has been trying to plan a second Philly meetup! RAoA restores her faith in humanity. She has an obsession with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. She also has a huge movie collection! She would love to be an Entertainment Journalist and she writes some awesome movie reviews! She would love to go back to the 1920’s to crash one of Gatsby’s parties. When you see her feel free to ask her all about your favorite movies!

15. ez617 (Emily) - The Writer Emily thinks RAoA is a magical corner of the internet, full of hugs and amazing people. When asked for some interesting things about her, her response was “I’m pretty badass with a sword, boomerang, bow, slingshot, and bombs. I’m a master harp, wind waker, and ocarina player. Oh, and I’m Link.” She clearly has a goofy humorous side to herself! She says for her dream job she’d love to be a PA by day and a kick-ass screenwriter or novelist by night. Emily also says the sifi fanatic in her would love to see whatever the future has in store for us! Feel free to write Emily sometime!

18

18 For 18 CON’T 16. CarTarget (Brendan) - The Hilarious One Brendan comes to us from “The land of sunshine and rainbows and infinite doughnuts! Or California, for short.” Brendan has one of the best personalities of them all! He’s kind hearted and loves to have a blast with everyone! He’s been hit by four cars, (explains his username), and has never broken a single bone. He also knows what the fox says but he is not telling a single soul. His dream is to open an addiction rehab facility in Tanzania because when he lived there he saw so many families ruined by addiction. He says RAoA means community to him and he’s met some amazing people here. It makes him happy to see so many people thriving on making others happy. Make sure you share a laugh with Brendan sometime soon!

17. Utreppenwitz (Lauren) - The One Who Draws Stick Figures Lauren has had several different usernames in her time spent on RAoA but we all love her no matter what her username is. RAoA is the place where she feels welcome and loved. Lauren has an adorable new baby named Jack. She has plans of going back to school in January to finish her degree in elementary education. She says she can’t do anything art related but she has successfully drawn stick figures from time to time. She would love to go back to 1847 because that’s the year the doughnut was invented and the same year Jane Eyre was published! Next time you see Lauren feel free to ask all about how baby Jack is doing!

18. l337Chica (Jess) - RAoA’s Very Own Santa Chica I’m sure you’ve seen Jess’ Santa contests alongside her “Ho ho ho” gifting. She says RAoA is her entire world and there is no better place. She’s a professional beach bum. She also crochets, paints, cooks, and does some photography in her spare time. She works at a renaissance festival, but says her “grown-up” job is at a service call center. The only place she would travel back to would be to bed - she seems to love sleep! Keep an eye out - you never know if or when she’ll do some more fun contests!

Disclaimer: These users are just a handful of the MANY incredible people here. Check back next month for a whole new batch of users. To keep this unique and diverse no suggestions will be taken as to who should be featured. Remember to be excellent to each other and you could be chosen next! If you were asked to participate in this feature, take into account that this is run on a first come first serve basis. WRITERS OF RAOA Her eyes narrowed. It had been six hours, thirty three minutes and sixteen seconds since he called. Six hours, thirty three minutes and sixteen seconds since he broke her heart. What for? Some 16 year old viper who would break his heart and drain him dry. And who would have yo pick up the pieces ... again? Her. Her, her, her! She would never say no to that psuedoman. Why did she even bother with his ‘fish’ loving self ? She knew in her right mind he would never reciprocate her feelings. She would always be the buddy. The pal. The shoulder. Asshole. Yet she STILL held onto that faint thread. Those wishes of wanting to replay that night... The way he smelt in the rain, the way his hand glided across her tear stained cheeks. God that embrace.. She felt she could just fall into his web of lies... But that is all it is. She knows his games. His manipulations. But just to be that one jewel he could never be without. She felt these feelings would never fade. - /u/ReisaD

The City of Allure

Sharp images of sights and sounds

Where bitterness is not just a taste

Are what keep my humble hopes abound

And hopeful has-beens leave in haste

The colors and hues help me to drown

I tried to feed my feeble flame

Past memories that made me leave this town

But I was a fool to think I could tame

I said I would leave the serenity

This glorious city and it’s twisted game

To be tied down by the lights of the city

So I left another town once more

Where no one cares to bare your pity

With bruises from battle that left me sore

But would rather share in your animosity

The bid adieu to the city of allure

So I’ll sit and wait and muse

Leaving the luminous lights I had once adored

Over walking in someone else’s shoes

- /u/unicorndanceparty

On the streets that ooze every hue Of glitter and glam and blissful blues Where the music flows and knows its place On the shallow streets of saving face

Dearest Lacey, I apologize for my extended absence. I was on my daily stroll a few days ago, and I found a charred piece of paper on the ground. There were instructions on it, with some cryptic text below the instructions. The text seemed to hint at the presence of a buried treasure in some city. I can’t make any sense of the directions, though. Do you think you could help me?

I’m sure you’re wondering where to begin. Oh, it doesn’t really matter. Just start where you’re standing. Excellent! Keep in mind that all distances are approximate. I’m writing this from memory! Be sure to face west. Walk 5 paces. Perform a left flank. Walk about 10 paces. Hmmm. That might be too far. About face and walk back half way. Turn 90º to the right and walk 10 paces. Yeah, that sounds about right. You should be facing east right now. Turn southwest and march 10 paces. AH! I screwed up again! Ok, I think I figured it out: turn and face behind you. Walk back halfway. Face east and walk 5 paces. Face northwest. Walk 5 paces. Wait a minute, I think I just led you back to somewhere you had previously been. Sorry for the tour of the area! It won’t happen again! (It will probably happen again.) Face southeast. Walk 10 paces. Turn completely around. Now face 45º to your right. Walk 10 paces. (I love 5s and 10s. Get over it.) Turn southeast and walk 4 paces. (I chose 4 just to switch things up. It probably doesn’t really matter, anyway.) Turn 90º right and walk 4 paces. Turn 90º left and walk 5 paces. Perform the previous sentence one last time. Wait, strike that. Go back to the last place you were. I told you the correct number of steps, just the wrong direction. Go the opposite direction you just went. It’s 5 steps, as normal. Now face northwest. Walk backward 10 steps. Turn 90º right and walk forward 5 steps. Face west and walk 4 steps. You don’t really need to be here, but surely you wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t a nice day. I just wanted you to sight see a tiny bit since we’re almost done. Turn 180º and walk 14 steps. Turn right and walk 10 steps. Do this two more times.

If you’ve followed my instructions properly, you should know the approximate location.

That is the instruction list in its entirety. I’m stumped. If you have any idea where the treasure might be, please let me know as soon as possible! This could be our big break! Without you I’m blue,

Barry

Do you know where the treasure is located? If so, PM /u/FredWampy!

Contest ends November 3 at 6 pm Eastern. Keep an eye on /u/raoapress for occasional hints posted in the Daily Thread.

According to Wikipedia, the oldest human ever was nearly 122 1/2 years old at the time of her death1. A Galรกpagos tortoise once lived nearly 170 years in captivity2. There is a living bonsai tree that is dated to the early 16th century3, making it over 500 years old. But is it the oldest living organism? Hardly.

HOW OLD IS THE OLDEST LIVING ORGANISM?

In California, there exists an extremely old Great Basin bristlecone pine tree. In 1957, the tree was sampled and, by a process unbeknownst to me, the germination date was approximated to be 2832 BCE, meaning the tree is 4845 years old. The tree was named Methuselah, after the biblical character of the same name who lived to be 969 years old. While the approximate location of the tree is public knowledge, the precise location is a closely guarded secret, due to the fear of vandalism. But guess what! Methuselah is still not the oldest known living organism! In 2013, another old tree of the same species was discovered. The tree was sampled and was given the germination date of 3051 BCE, making it 5063 years old. Most of the information was obtained from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methuselah_%28tree%29

horoscopes Scorpio - October 23 - November 21 If you want to feel a sense of accomplishment this month, you should try to focus on building a better friendship with someone you care about! Someone on the sub has missed talking to you, but they have been hesitant to tell you about it since you’ve been so busy. Get in touch with them this month and let them know they are important to you.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Keeping your options open is usually a smart thing to do, but if you have any gifting planned right now you need to finalize things as soon as you can. Prices and availability are bound to change soon, and if you want to surprise them, you need to act fast.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 As much as it might make you feel guilty, you have to keep your distance from needy people right now. You simply don’t have enough time or energy to help them out with what they are dealing with. Avoid sharing even a tiny portion of your resources, because you will inevitably get more involved than you really want to. Everyone needs to learn how to handle things on their own, but for some people, the only way they can learn is by being forced to.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 Closure is important to you right now, so you may want to repay any kindness you’ve recieved, finalize any meetup plans, and double check you gifted for any contests you had. Things are starting to slow down a bit in your life, and it’s getting much easier to manage your RAoA time.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 When you have some downtime today, you should make the most of it. Duck out of reality and step into your RAoA life for a little while. Get back in there and fill in some blanks with new friends, new contests and new activities. Putting energy into RAoA will actually help make your real life a little more clearer. RAoA will help your day go by.

Aries March 21 - April 19 It’s a great day for a date, but it doesn’t have to be a romatic one. You don’t need romance to enjoy your time. As a matter of fact, why not make a date with RAoA? Treating yourself to a lovely night or afternoon out on the sub is a wonderful way to start making those new connections. If you can’t have all your needs met by RAoA, don’t feel neglected. Keep trying you’ll make that connection you’re looking for.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Egos are very delicate things, and you might have to walk on tiptoes around one person’s ego this month until they can get a grip on how things have changed. Plain and simple, you have won the battle and they are having trouble getting used to it. Try not to rub it in — don’t be pompous about things and don’t try to make them feel better about themselves with compliments that you might not mean. Just leave them alone to get over it on their own. They will, eventually.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Some fun new members are coming into your life this month, and they are going to turn what could be a typical day into a very interesting one. Try to get involved in their shenanigans as early on as you can. They’re on to something good, and you should find out more about it. They could use a bright, witty person like you on their team, so step up and volunteer! It might not be a day full of victories, but it could easily be a day full of laughter and smiles.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 Try not to censor yourself right now — your subconscious is coming up with some good stuff, and it will appear to you under the guise of an impulse. So if you have a sudden urge to do some gifting or go participate in an activity you don’t usually participate in, follow it. You won’t regret it! Embrace all of the attention you get when you do things in a new style.

Leo July 23 - August 22 Your most recent achievement has you feeling pretty proud of yourself, but why haven’t you shared the good news with more people? You deserve some public praise — cheering crowds aren’t only appropriate for celebrities, you know! When you’re feeling this great post about it in the daily thread.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 A few things are coming your way today that will really test how flexible you can be. But you can be prepared for anything if you expect nothing! The members around you are in need of some advice right now, so calm them by being calm yourself. People are looking to you for the answers now more than ever, so you can no longer afford to be the class clown. You’ve got to be the leader you know you can be.

Libra September 23 - October 22 You have been full of high hopes for a friend’s latest project, and this month that project will come to an end. They are likely to give you some credit for the success of the project, and you should accept it. You know that if the shoe was on the other foot, you would be just as grateful to and generous with them. This friendship of yours is about to blossom into something bigger and more fulfilling.
