«Architecture and urban space design» follows each year a river, along which ititworks work with different scales of urban interventions. The study areas this year are located in frihamnen and hisingen, along the river kvillebäcken. The students will use this river as “a thread” linking two different locations, and they will investigate them through different scales: local, urban and metropolitan. specific issues addressed in each one of them will acquire a broader regional or even global perspective on the elements that determine urban development, and its connection to the river. As they understand the city as an entity, as a whole urban structure and not as an aggregation of parts, the scope intended transitions scope ofof intended will be studied to improve a degree of physical relationship to the place and human scale.

FRIHAMNEN
012
yesterday In the early 1900s, an international competition is organized to expand Gothenburg’s port and creating an artificial island divided in three docks on the Hisingen shore : Södra Frihamnspiren (or Bananpiren), Norra Frihamnspiren and
Kville Pier. Frihamnen was inaugurated in 1922. The name could be translated by “free port” because it was possible to bring goods ashore without customs duties.
today Nowadays the port has moved further out, closer to the sea. Left behind is large areas of asphalt and some old warehouses. A few warehouses have been transformed into office buildnings, but others are in quite bad condition. As part of the 400th anniversary of Gothenburg the process of creating a big public park -
Jubileumsparken - has been initiated, using the method Platsbyggnad. The objective is to integrate the area into an inclusive, green, and dynamic part of the city thanks to several projects and events throughout the year. The location of Frihamnen has a real potential thanks to the new view on the city center and the closeness to the water. A public sauna, a swimming pool, a sailing school and urban cultivations take part in the activities of this new way of urban development. people are allowed to take over the area and make it their own. The park is constantly developing and creates a legacy for the future Planning.
tomorrow Frihamnen will be strategically important for the project to expand the city across the river by linking up the Kvillestaden, Backaplan, Lindolhmen and Ringön quarters. The area will be a hub comprising new workplaces, socially mixed housing and good public transport. The development will be dense and contain a mix of uses. The Kvilläcken river will be channeled through Frihamnen to form a ‘green corridor’. No freight ferries will be permitted here. The area will be linked to the city within the moat by means of a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists between Frihamnen and the extension of Östra Hamngatan and Avenyn.
f i r s t s t e p The first task, which was done in groups, was to analyze and measure the landscape. The aim of mapping traces of different activities, use, hidden infrastructure and history, with 3d-scanning and other individually chosen methods. It resulted in a both psychological, precise shared cartography and point cloud model of the pier. point of ofview, view, the thearea arealooks lookslike likea From our point a wasteland where nature reclaimed wasteland where nature hashas reclaimed its its rights the site. The particular character of the site is so powerful that the first time we had discovered it, we were very curious about it and its future. The ensued visits were always enthralling, thanks to the discoveries of new aspects. For us, the site has a real potential, specially in terms of space, landscape and location in the city.

This temporary project is a yellow bubble, which is constructed on the junction between the abandoned industrial bridges. It supposes to be a new meeting space with a special relation with the city because of its special location and its natural connection with the water. This architectural team will take a part in the city landscape and development of a wide variety of activities there. The Hubba Bubba team was also involved in the student´s designing process and the collaboration was very interesting, especially for the students. Mainly because of their remarks and guidance as the professional architects with a lot of experiences and not only with this particular site as Frihamnen is.

Together with Platsbyggnad and ÄUAB & SBK the work was to design prototypes for an educational structure. The task was a structure that would function as an outdoor classroom and as a connection between the «blue Station house» and the new social gathering space Hubba Bubba out on the rails to the river and to tell the visitor a story about the place. This new way of working was

a real alternative way design through production and a great opportunity. the possibility to build the project in 1:1 scale was a fertilizer for the development of our ideas. The proposed material was wood planks and plastic tubes. The location was important for the projects because it was the start point of each one. The projects had to highlight the environment.

The structure wants to show visitors see the city center view. The structure itself consists out of WOOD and should be easy to assemble. The construction can easily be adapted to each topography. [ PLAYGROUND PALIMPSEST ] The PLAYGROUND PALIMPSEST wants to close the historic circle of the site: from water to aphalt - from asphalt to nature - from nature to people - from people to water There is an iteration of different sizes of TRIANGLES to create the main structure. A triangle is the simpliest geometry which can reproduce the mist complex shapes. The shape reminds of the FISHING INDUSTRY. There could grow vegetation on the structure and there could be a variation of pieces within the structure. The main FUNCTION would be a playground connecting different parts of Kvillepiren. Ōrioł Guitart / Sofia Jonasson/ Andrea Martinez
e [ TRYANGLE ]
The TRYANGLE project wants to integrate the Blue House in the future plans of Kvillepiren. By leading passengers in between the future residential buildings it attracts and entertains visitors of all ages. The structure consists of WOODEN triangles to achieve structural stability. The starting point was a GEODESIC DOME. After unfolding, other possibilities of folding arise. The joints can be FLEXIBLE or RIGID. Different FUNCTIONS can be intergrated. For example seating, a playground, a shelter as a classroom and a path. This also depends on the SCALE that is used for the triangles. lisa hermansson / sophie leemans david scavo / nikola Žuchová
[In the black and white development of Kvillepiren from abandoned INDUSTRIAL BROWN SITE to open and accessible public green space, this design inserts a shade of grey. With a path raised just above the ground and with frames clearly enclosing the space for the visitor, the ”look-but-don’t-touch” of prototype B serves to raise the question of why you CAN’T TOUCH, bringing the issue of polluted sites to the forefront. But by permitting access and with the sections of rope wound around the light structure, prototype B also allows the people to see the value of and fall in love with the site, even before the grand opening of the park. marc délez / Anton Edberg Biljana Janjušević / emma Nordhamn

f [ the cubes ]
This prototype wants to highlight the surroundings by framing them with cubes. Thanks to the symmetrical form, cubes can be added in every direction. The identical parts make the building process easy. Ropes help defining the space as well stabilizing the structure. The cube can HIGHLIGHT an object, FRAME one from a distance and it can CREATE INTIMATE SPACES in an area of vast scale. Different situations call for different parts of the cube to be used. The cube can adapt to an existing grid or break it. hans Carlsson / Felicia Jernstedt
mock-up introduction The team of architects chose two projects: the tryangle project and the SEA SERPENT project. During a week in Frihamnen all students participated to the construction of the mocks up. Two teams were created and both projects tried to incorporate the others’ ideas to develop them into a group project. The blue house During the week of the mock up construction, we had our own space on site: the blue house. It has been used as a service house for the drivers who came to the pier to enter the ferry for cargo transportation. Now the blue house is used as a meeting point for people who build a project on site.

The main idea was to create an interesting space which would serves people and help them develop themselves. Make people to enjoy this specific site as Frihamnen is and learn from the structure itself. We used triangles to create and define unique space, which should be flexible in the real time. That means, people would be able to change the structure in their own way to servers them in a certain way and during the changing process gain new information and knowledges.
mock-up onsite
The hardest part during the mock-up was the join the triangles with each other and save construction itself. Mainly because we had the idea of flexibility. Even thought we had no idea how it should really look like. all these problems we enjoyed that time very much and we bonded with each other So, we had decided to test different more. We learned a lot from the building situations with different types of triangles part, but also from the structure itself. We and saw what could happened. Then we were saw how we were changing the space around struggling with the moving part and how to us and how this fact was inspiring us.

structure and cancelled the flexibility, because of the safety for people. Also, we had to reduce it, a lot. In the first part we were planning to situate the structure in front, above and behind the blue house.
But we would need too much material and it wouldn´t be able to make it during one construction week. So, we had decided to make a small prototype which would include DAVID SCAVO & NIKOLA ŽUCHOVÁ all our ideas and elements from the big The main change from the mock-up was, that structure, but with reduced amount of we had to define the exact shape of the whole material and work.

T H E s e a serpent project
The main idea was to create a structure were activities are not strictly defined. We thought that the possibility of spontaneous activities and the creation of a construction system as simple as possible were the starting points of the concept. Using wood, we had a lot of freedom making different shapes and the material fits well with the environment. We decided on an area between the blue house and the water where there is a small green area with trees and bushes, the view is also really impressive since the opera house stands on the other side of the river.

a little table or a sunchair. By confirming that the constructive system worked, we started to build a bigger structure but just the part that had the most interest. Teams were formed to cut or assemble the wood pieces and the panels together. The result We decided to start with the development was a success because students could climb of a chair that could be transformed into on it and have a variety of activities inside. The construction week of the mock-up was really interesting because we were able to test the connections between the panels, discover and understand which parts could pose a challenge for the future structure.

Second p a r ta n d changes john bogren & raphaĂŤlle paire During this period the task was to develop the structure into a playground within a gathering space. The challenge was that the playground had to be adapted for both kids, adults and people with disabilities. We decided to continue working in the same area as before as it was the perfect place to view the city and have a close relation to the shoreline. In this part of the project, the group was reduced to two people that worked together to develop suggestions of different sizes of structures, small, medium
034
and large. Thanks to a book containing guidelines for playgrounds, we could easily understand the limits of our structure in order to make it safe for use. We continued to work with our knowledge from the mock-up to try to understand the problems regarding safety. By increasing the width and to create steps we could avoid having protective rails which would have compromized the identity of the structure. The structure became larger and create more interesting spaces, for instance, two adults could now sit next to each other which was not possivle in the mock-up. The dimensions of the wood planks were changed from 45mm x 45mm to 95 mm x 28mm in order to fit the safety guidelines, this also changed the overall look of the structure to a more rubust one. One of the first concepts were to have a flexible structure, however, this did not comply to the safety norms so rather than having the structure itself flexible, the structure allowed a variety of movement and activities for the people using it.

r e a l i s a t i o n onsite When the time came to actually build the projects there was not enough time or money to build both the tryangle and the sea serpent structures. Therefore, the team of architects chose to proceed with the sea serpent project and two picnic benches and one playground were constructed during a week with two carpenters and the help of few students. Lots of adaptations were made during the week because of the professional expertice of the carpenters and some issues that were discovered while building. The main work was to count and measure all pieces of wood beforehand. To help prove the concept and
038
building method, two benches were chosen as a starting point. When the system was optimised and functioning, we decided to to a larger one. The two carpenters brought special machines to drill holes and cut the wooden planks so the work was quick and quite easy thanks to the organization that we created. The work was similar to a production line and very efficient since the joints of the structure were easily repeatable. However, when it came to transporting the structures from the workshop to the site, we struggled a bit because of their immense weight and size. The work took place in Frihamnen in Magasin 113 which was previously an industrial warehouse. Nowadays this building is temporary used as a weather proof space in Jubileumsparken, where programs like art exhibitions, bicycle-activites and work shops take place. In a few months it will betransformed into a mixed use building by BSK Arkitkter and MVRDV Architects.

riverspace Riverspace is about regenerating Kvillepiren as an ecological, recreational and educational benefit for the city. From polluted junk space to public space. Kvillepiren is a central but yet very rough and detached location. The structure deals with the rough conditions at Kvillepiren and utilizes them as architectural qualities providing the people of Gothenburg with a new public space by the river. The site is contaminated from previous industrial acitivty, therefore part of the intervention is to purify the site simultaneously as making it an accessible and educational experience.

This was my first urban design studio and I must say it broadened my perspective on architecture within urban space design. The group work assignments during the first part of the course consisted of different scales and design aspects. It was very interesting how we worked on shortterm interventions but how they were still part of the bigger story of the studio. The lectures and workshops taught us to connect new knowledge to practice rather quickly. In the second part of the course I enjoyed choosing a project for myself, adapted to what I thought was interesting. The best part of the course for me was the building week in Frihamnen, because this was something I never did before!

I want inhabitants to be curious by themselves and spontaneously reveal the interesting facts about the water and how the water works in the nature. I have chosen few basic parameters as view, sounds, light, safety, openness and so on. then I matched these specific parameters with the specific parameters from the landscape which supports the water cycle and basically create the run off the water. In the structure itself, I am focusing on the rain water.
