WELCOME

From the EDITOR

Natasha Hewett Editor-in-chief

Rebecca Harding If your reading this, then you may well be pregnant ... Or maybe your baby is already here... Either way, congratulations and welcome to parenthood! Well, where do we start? What a start of the year that was! Who could have predicted 2020 beginning like that? We hope you’re keeping safe and well and adjusting to the new normal in these uncertain times. Talking of Lockdown, midwives predict a baby-boom, so for all those lockdown babies, be sure to check out our best baby buys on page 8 helping you shop from the comfort of your own home. While we are shopping from home, have you booked your tickets for The Baby Show Live @ Home with Lidl on 30th October - 1st November. Check out page 31 for our quick guide to the show and a unique discount code for a free ticket *RRP £15pp but be quick. There is only a limited number available. Sadly there are no big baby shows this year, and picking that perfect pram can be tricky enough at the best of times. But choosing a pram during a pandemic when you can’t trial and play is even more challenging. On page 14, we explain the difference between different style prams and what might be best for you. They say one of the most exciting parts of nesting is prepping the nursery for that new arrival. When designing your perfect nursery, we have you covered on page 66. Word of warning, be prepared for nursery envy. Please don’t say I didn’t warn you. So we have covered baby, but what about the toddlers? Caring for those little teeth when they have entered that independent stage can be challenging, so check out our toddler troubles corner on-page 70 for more info. Don’t forget to join us on Instagram for weekly competitions and everyday baby chat. See you there.

Choosing The Perfect Pushchair to Suit your Lifestyle

It’s hard not to feel like a beginner when you’re shopping for that first pushchair. But we all feel like that when we’re starting out, just keep in mind that lifestyle plays a big part in determining the right pushchair for you and your little one. So first things first, what do you actually even need - if you’re fully stumped head over to our beginners guide.

babies, usually while they are lying flat. You can easily turn a pushchair into a pram if it has a lie-flat seat, or with the addition of a carrycot.

But hopefully our little explanation below will help you decipher the meaning of the words ‘pushchair, pram, buggy & stroller’ - so many words that all mean sort of the same thing. And you thought Eskimos went overkill with variations on ‘snow’. Thankfully, we’re here to simplify everything and focus on what matters - helping you find the pushchair which is best for your baby, your budget and your lifestyle, whether you like to hit the shops or tackle tougher terrains.

PUSHCHAIR

From the moment you bring your baby home, to the point where they’re running around and climbing the furniture, a pushchair is an essential accessory when out and about. New and expectant parents often ask the same thing: “what’s the difference between a pram, a buggy and a pushchair?”. If we’re being honest, these terms are often used interchangeably, but for clarity’s sake there are key differences between them:

TRAVEL SYSTEm

PRAM Traditionally, a pram (also known as a perambulator if you live life like it’s 1920) is a four wheeled carriage designed especially for newborn

14 l OCTOBER 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

A folding chair with wheels, designed for a baby or small child to be pushed around while seated.

STROLLER / BUGGY A stroller is a lightweight collapsable chair with wheels, most suited to toddlers and young children.

A pushchair with the ability to attach a car seat and/or a carrycot, usually the pieces are bought together. To find one that’s ideal, it’s recommended that you choose a pushchair that not only suits your baby’s needs but also your lifestyle, whether that’s bus-hopping on public transport, taking baby hiking or long car journeys with your brood.

LIFESTYLE

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR CAR OWNERS If your time is spent getting from A to B in a car, then a travel-system is the thing for you. Pushchair travel systems include an infant carrier (carrycot), a pushchair and a car seat, or a convertible pushchair and car seat. It’s the best way to transport your baby from the car to your next destination without waking them. You simply click the car seat out, attach it to your pushchair chassis and off you go. It’s worth looking out for pushchairs that: *Are car seat (and carrycot) compatible *Are light enough to lift in and out of a boot often *Can fold down to a compact size to take up as little boot space as possible

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR WALKING, EXERCISE & THE GREAT OUTDOORS If you live life in the fast lane, well, the bumpy lane, you’ll need an all-terrain pushchair. All-terrain pushchairs are great for frequent strolls in the park, walking the dog, or a trip to the woods. They offer stability and adaptable handlebars for travelling in complete comfort. It’s best to look out for pushchairs that include: *Large wheels to comfortably navigate different surfaces (three wheelers are a great choice) *Great suspension that can keep up with the twists and turns on a brisk morning jog or a hike *Adjustable handlebars to offer you greater comfort as you push

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR GROWING FAMILIES If you’re already bringing up a little one and planning on adding a new edition to your family (we know, baby steps...) thinking about which pushchair you choose can save you time and money down the line. A pushchair that can be converted into a multi-child pushchair, or can adapt to additional features like an extra seat or stroller platform (so the big kid can come along for the ride) is ideal. Then you’re ready to go as soon as your new arrival makes an appearance. If you are expecting twins, you won’t get far without a double, tandem or convertible pushchair. Each one breaks down like this: *Twin pushchairs allow your babies to sit side by side *Tandem pushchairs place one child in-front of the next for a narrow, longer frame *Convertible pushchairs let you add an additional seat on at a later date (some even replace a seat with a shopping basket)

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT Manoeuvring a pushchair on and off a train, tube or bus can be a struggle, and an absolute nightmare for yourself and everyone around you, but it doesn’t have to be this way. If public transport is a part of your daily life, consider picking a pushchair that: * Is lightweight and foldable - making it easy to lift on and off public transport *Is small enough to push on a bus or train *Has large enough wheels so they won’t get stuck in gaps between the pavement or the platform *Fits in designated pushchair spaces and aisles on buses and trains

Hopefully we’ve given you some different options to consider, and make a mountain of information not seem so, well, mountainous. Happy hunting! project-baby.co.uk

MANtenatal

So we brought together a team of experts in all things pregnancy, child birth and parenting and decided to do something about it.

MANtenatal was created by a father of 4 who has attended not one but two full antenatal courses over a 10 year period. On both occasions, the classes were good but they never seemed to give enough focus on men and what they need to be better dads. The other thing he spotted during these courses was the heavy reliance on theory and flipcharts. Parenthood is not about theory or what it says in books… you have to get stuck in and literally get your hands dirty! Yes, that does mean poo… So this is where MANtenatal steps in. Join other guys in a safe environment where nothing is taboo. Ask anything you want, there won’t be any rolling eyes or looks of ‘wait until I get you home’… These classes are designed to help you play your part in becoming the best dad you can be.

PREGNANCY

Almost half (43%) of parents believe the Coronavirus crisis will alter the way UK babies are named – and seven per cent of mums-to-be have already changed a name choice due to the pandemic..

The survey was conducted between 28-29 May 2020 by www.ChannelMum.com

Naming Baby

During a Pandemic ChannelMum.com baby name expert SJ Strum said:

“Baby names reflect changing times and never more so than when the world is facing a catastrophe. The current crisis means parents are understandably stressed and anxious, so are using new-born’s names to celebrate new life and joy. Positive names are a wonderful way to keep focusing on the future and means that the child knows their name has real meaning.”. However, the coronavirus pandemic means parents are now choosing more positive names for their children. Seven in ten have listed hopeful ‘virtue’ names, with Faith, Hope, Charity, Patience and Constance predicted to come back into fashion. Over half (54%) would consider a Rainbow name after the kids’ art trend. Popular picks include Iris, meaning Rainbow in Greek, alongside Indigo and Blue. But Violet is out because of its closeness to ‘virus’. Also popular are Hero names to honour our key workers, the poll of 1,300 parents for ChannelMum.com found. Top choices are the gender-neutral Hero, Avery and Bravery plus Maverick for boys, with three in ten backing a rise in popularity.

18 l OCTOBER 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

Meanwhile Florence – which is currently number 15 in the baby name charts – could jump into the top ten girl’s names as half consider it, due to its links with the Nightingale hospitals. Amongst the current uncertainty, a new trend has also emerged for ‘secure’ names, including Haven and Harbour. One in five parents said they would consider a secure name for their child, as the crisis continues. Happy names are popular with a third of new parents, in a bid to beat lockdown gloom and celebrate new life. The most selected names include Bliss, Joy, Blythe and Felicity for girls, alongside Pax and Sol for boys. One in ten even believes Wickes or Wix could be used as a baby name after school PE fitness video hero Joe Wicks, while the name Joe – currently ranked 316th - could rise through the name charts again.

Acupuncture ACUPUNCTURE CAN DOUBLE THE CHANCES OF GETTING PREGNANT THROUGH IVF By Colin Fernandez, Science Correspondent for The Daily Mail

Over 46 per cent of women undergoing acupuncture treatment conceived While only 21.7 per cent of the women became pregnant in the other group Treatment may be offered as a possible method of improving IVF outcome Expert says it may only work due to patient spending time with practitioner Acupuncture may double the chances of a woman conceiving with IVF, a study has found.

The needle technique was used before any eggs were retrieved from the woman’s body – and then again before and after the fertilised embryo was implanted.

Among couples undergoing the fertility treatment, the likelihood of pregnancy was greatly improved if the woman also had acupuncture.

The researchers, led by Karin Gillerman, said previous clinical trials have ‘precluded any firm conclusion’ about the treatment.

Scientists at Homerton University Hospital studied 127 women aged between 23 and 43, on their first or second cycle of IVF.

But they added: ‘The results of this study imply acupuncture may be offered as a possible method of improving IVF outcome.’

They were split into two groups – one having four sessions of acupuncture while undergoing IVF, and the other having none.

However, they warned that simply the act of paying more attention to the group who had acupuncture may have acted as a placebo effect.

Among the treatment group, 46.2 per cent conceived – more than twice as many as in the other group, where only 21.7 per cent of the women became pregnant.

In research presented at the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology, the authors wrote of the study’s limitations: ‘The additional attention paid to the acupuncture group as opposed to controls may have had a positive psychological influence.’

PREGNANCY

The NHS advises on its Choices website that acupuncture is safe when practised with good hygiene by a qualified practitioner. The main risk to pregnant women having the treatment is from blood-borne diseases caused by unclean needles – similar to the risks from getting a tattoo or a body piercing – and the chance that these could infect the baby. Local authorities have bylaws that govern the cleanliness of acupuncture premises, their instruments and equipment. Mild side effects include pain, bleeding or bruising where the needles puncture the skin, drowsiness, and feeling sick or dizzy. Gynaecology consultant Stuart Lavery, who was not involved in the research, said there was strong patient demand and interest in acupuncture among many couples attending IVF clinics.

‘It is an area sadly lacking in the area of rigorous assessment,’ he said. ‘The study is interesting as it does seem to show a significant difference.’ But he added: ‘The most important thing is it doesn’t control for the placebo effect. One would like to see in the clinical trial a test of “sham acupuncture”.’

This attempt to eradicate any placebo effect would involve making the patient think they are undergoing acupuncture, when really the needles retract without piercing the skin. Alternatively, needles are placed randomly, rather than at the pressure points usually specified for the treatment. Mr Lavery said: ‘The placebo effect is very real and we see it in every branch of medicine.

Helping to Provide Support “Infertility Network UK offers hope, a listening ear, a hug and a smile when others don’t know what to say or do… At I N UK, we do!” Infertility Network UK is the leading national infertility charity, supporting everyone who finds they have difficulties conceiving. Whether you need emotional support to cope with the rollercoaster of the infertility journey, or practical support to help you access NHS funding, you will find it all on our website. Talking to someone who has been through infertility and knows just how you feel, lets you know that you don’t have to face infertility alone. You can call our Supportline, speak to one of our volunteer Helpliners or find a support group near you.

SUPPORTLINE

‘The power of the human mind to produce improvement is very real and everybody who works in medicine understands that.’

Our Supportline offers a unique and free service which provides support and information from our trained nurse.

He added that acupuncture may only be effective because it involves a practitioner spending time with the patient, and listening to them, something that is difficult in much of the NHS.

HELPLINES

‘Patients are looking for someone who can give them that time and listen to what’s going on in their lives, and that may have some therapeutic benefits,’ Mr Lavery said.

HEALTH

PND Spot the signs Postnatal depression should not be confused with the ‘baby blues’. This is when you have less severe symptoms of feeling sad, irritable and touchy, crying, or having anxiety. These milder symptoms typically begin in the first week after you give birth, and usually go away after a couple of weeks. While having the baby blues can really get you feeling down, rest assured those feelings will soon pass. PND should also not be confused with a rare mood disorder called postpartum psychosis, which involves more severe symptoms, such as hallucinations. Postnatal Depression Signs and Symptoms The first step is to recognise whether you may have PND. The signs of postnatal depression include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Depressed mood Excessive crying Difficulty bonding with your baby Withdrawing from loved ones Loss of appetite Eating much more than usual Inability to sleep (insomnia) Feeling sleepy during the day Overwhelming fatigue or loss of energy Reduced interest and pleasure in activities you used to enjoy Intense irritability and anger Fear that you’re not a good mother Feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt, or inadequacy Diminished ability to focus Decreased ability to handle everyday tasks Severe anxiety and panic attacks Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

Only after speaking to your GP or your health visitor will you be able to answer the question: Do I have postnatal depression? But you may want to ask yourself (and then tell your doctor) whether you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, and whether:

28 l OCTOBER 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

• • • •

Any of these symptoms has lasted longer than two weeks Your symptoms are getting worse, not better You’re finding it hard to care for your baby You’re finding it challenging to complete everyday tasks.

How to Support a Loved One Who Has Postnatal Depression People with PND may not be able to tell that they’re depressed; they may not know the signs and symptoms. If you suspect a loved one has postnatal depression, help her seek medical advice right away. Keep in mind that as a partner, friend, or family member, you can’t ‘fix’ postnatal depression, but you can be there for the new mum. Here are some practical things you can try: • Reassure her that she will get better • Listen to and accept her feelings; understand that she cannot control any negative feelings • Offer to take care of the baby so she has space to do relaxing things like go for a walk or get a massage, guilt-free • Arrange for a family member, friend, or babysitter to care for the baby for a few hours, so she has a chance to sleep • Help out by doing basic errands, chores, or day-to-day tasks to take some of the responsibility off her plate. If you are the other parent of the newborn, keep in mind that there is such a thing as paternal and male postnatal depression. If your partner is depressed, it can also affect you, as your risk of depression is already higher during this time. If you find yourself feeling depressed, try the above-mentioned tools, and speak to your GP.

Postnatal depression is not your fault. Unfortunately, many women feel guilty or ashamed because they can’t find any reason to explain why they feel so unhappy. Some may even experience having their feelings dismissed or criticised by others. Remember, this is a medical condition that requires treatment, and it’s important not to suffer alone. There is support out there, and once the fog clears, you’ll be able to enjoy this time with your baby.

Hello! The Baby Show is the UK’s largest and longest running baby and parenting event of its kind supporting over 100,000 new and expectant parents every year as they embark on their exciting journey. We have so missed seeing all those lovely bumps and babies at the NEC in Birmingham and Olympia in London, however, we have loved welcoming over 20,000 new Mummy’s and Daddy’s to our virtual series of events, The Baby Show Live @ Home with Lidl. Our first two virtual events held during lockdown were fantastic and allowed new and expectant parents to shop for all their baby essentials and get the expert advice they needed, from the safety of their homes, during

the height of the pandemic. We were delighted to receive some amazing feedback from attendees and our exhibitors. As organisers of live shows, these virtual events were a steep learning curve, but absolutely worth it!

We can’t wait to see you virtually very soon!

We’re so excited about our third virtual event because we’ve evolved and it’s going to be even bigger and better! Our next event will be held on a new purpose-built platform and app. It’s super easy to look for products, shop your favourite brands and we have an amazing line up of the UK’s leading experts to give you advice on everything from birth, to what to look out for when choosing a buggy. The platform allows you to plan your day so you don’t miss any of the live expert speaker talks, Q&As and demos, you can create wish lists, live chat with brand experts and book a video appointment with exhibitors to get one-on-one advice. The Baby Show Live @ Home with Lidl brings you all the benefits of the live events, from the safety and comfort of your sofa, at the touch of a button. So grab a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy!

y b a b a p l e H o How T

g n i k o ch

Babies love to explore new objects with their mouths. Whether it is to examine new tastes or textures, or to help little teeth emerge, mouthing is a great experience for your baby, so ensure that any play objects are safe, unbreakable and are too big to fit inside the mouth. If you are weaning, you may find that your baby occasionally gags on even the most pureed food. The sensitive gag reflex allows the food to move forward into the mouth and it’s quite normal. If an object or food does get stuck in the throat and your baby is coughing, it is called ‘partial blockage.’ Remember, if your baby can cough then they can continue to cough until the blockage clears. You will know if your baby is choking if they are unable to cough, cry or breathe. In this case, you should quickly take the following steps. Sit down and lay baby face down along your thigh supporting their head. Give up to five sharp blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

Check the mouth for the object. If you can confidently pick it out with your fingertips then do so, but take great care not to push it in further. If the back blows do not clear the blockage, give up to five chest thrusts: with your baby laid face up along the length of your thigh, put two fingers just below the centre of the chest and push inwards up to five times. Check their mouth regularly and remove the object if possible. If choking persists, repeat back blows and chest thrusts until you dislodge the object and they can breathe. Call for help as soon as possible.

Don’t miss Daisy First Aid videos on choking, burns, CPR recovery position and more in the Videos & Advice On Demand section of The Baby Show Live @ Home with Lidl. Classes with Daisy First Aid are £25.00 per attendee. Further information can be found at www.daisyfirstaid.com

DEVELOPMENT

THE WONDERS

4 Astonishing facts

of Breastfeeding:

ABOUT BREASTMILK:

We are often told about the amazing benefits of breastmilk so we thought it would be a good idea to get to the bottom of just how clever it is! We have been speaking to Sioned Hilton, Lactation Consultant at Medela to find out! She has been working with breastfeeding mums for more than 20 years and certainly knows her stuff! Breastmilk is the only natural food source, designed especially for babies she says. Health experts tell us it protects them from infections and diseases and we are also told that Breastfed babies not only have less chance of becoming obese and therefore developing type 2 diabetes, they are also less likely to develop eczema. Given it is also always the right temperature, on tap and free it is a no brainer really! Sioned is adamant that mums must know their breast size is not important! No matter what size you are, you’ll make enough milk for your baby – pretty clever really! She tells us that babies breastfeed until they’re full, not until they ‘empty’ your breast, on average babies remove 67% of the milk available. When your baby is born his stomach is the size of a marble explains Sioned. The colostrum you produce will be just the right amount to fill him so do not panic! Breastmilk works on a supply and demand system so when baby feeds your body knows to produce more ready for his next feed another one of nature’s miracles! One thing to be aware of is growth spurts – typically these will happen at about two to three weeks, six weeks and three months. It may be a busy few days, but continuing to feed on demand is key - this phase will pass and the balance between supply and demand will be restored. You newborn baby is your treasure, but remember you are important too. We know you won’t want to take your eyes off your bundle of joy for a fair few weeks, but if you have a social event or night out coming up there are options. Being a breastfeeding mum doesn’t mean you have to put the dampeners on, but be sensible and aware that what you drink does come through into the breastmilk. Alcohol levels in milk peaks about 30-90 mins; wait 2-3 hours after drinking before breastfeeding if you consume a moderate quantity. You may prefer not to breastfeed at all and you can express your milk and discard so that you remain comfortable.

YOU SHOULD ALSO KNOW… •   The lactating breast is an organ. •   When it is hot your baby may feed more often as they become thirstier. This is    fine, but do ensure you keep your energy levels up and drink lots of water too! •   Babies naturally nurse in 2 phases - Initially they suck fast and light then slower and deeper. •   Breastfeeding burns an average of 500 calories a day.

1.  It’s the ultimate all-in-one meal and, amazingly, your body cleverly adapts the nutrients and volume of milk as baby grows to meet your baby’s needs and developmental stage. 2.  Recent research has shown that breastfeeding babies benefit from 415 individual proteins in breast milk. This is the ultimate high-protein diet. 3.  It has been discovered that breast milk contains stem cells, which have the ability to become a load of different type of cells in the body. This discovery certainly tells us more about the significant role breastmilk has on infant growth and development.

•   Breastfeeding doesn’t give you ‘saggy boobs’ - it’s the influence of progesterone on    the smooth muscle during pregnancy to support the developing uterus in the pelvis    if mums smoke before, during and after pregnancy the stretched muscles lose    their tone and may retain their shape.

Now to the breastmilk itself – given how incredible this potent liquid gold is we thought we would give you the facts - 5 things about breastmilk you didn’t know!

4.  Your breastmilk can educate your baby’s palate. What we eat is transferred to baby during a breastfeed and this supports the infant to learn about a great variety of tastes and flavours, great for when you start weaning! project-baby.co.uk

Sleep HEALTH

Guide to your baby sleep pattern

8 Point plan to getting a goodnight sleep Having a newborn baby is exhausting, especially in those early days but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Yes, in those first few weeks, sleepless nights will feel never-ending but trust us when we say that you will master sleep schedules somewhere along the way and you will be enjoying a full nights sleep every night again soon.

1. 0-6 WEEKS In the first few weeks, a newborn’s sleep schedule will be irregular and erratic. Think of this stage as the sleep-eat-poop cycle where the baby will sleep the majority of the time, only waking to eat and be cleaned up. Although the baby is asleep for many hours in this first stage, this is the usually the most exhausting stage for parents as they are unable to get more than a few hours of sleep themselves at a time.

Sleep tip: Avoid introducing bad habits at this stage such as feeding or rocking to sleep. These aren’t sustainable in the long run so the aim is to lay a solid foundation for healthy sleep patterns from the get-go. To do this, take note of your baby’s ‘sleepy’ cues so that you can put them down to sleep before they become overtired. Suggested schedule

Sleep tip: Avoid introducing sleep aids or associations if you can, but ultimately, just do what you need to do to make sure both you and your baby are getting enough rest.

Wake up: 6-6:30 AM Total time asleep: 14-16 hours Naps: 3-4 naps each lasting 30 minutes to 3 hours long Time awake between naps: 45 minutes to 2 hours Bed time: 8-10 PM

Suggested schedule

Longest stretch of sleep in night: typically 3-6 hours

Wake up: 7 AM Total time asleep: 15-18 hours Naps: 3-5 naps each lasting 15 minutes to 3 hours long Time awake between naps: 30 minutes to 1 hour Bed time: 9:30-11 PM Longest stretch of sleep in night: typically 2-4 hours

2. 2-3 MONTHS Once you have survived the first few weeks, you should start to see the resemblance of a sleep pattern emerging! By this time, you’ll still be exhausted from the first 6 weeks so you will be more than happy to be getting more sleep. Around the 2-3 month mark, your baby will be able to stay awake a little longer between sleeps and you’ll start to get an idea of the times that they tend to get sleepy.

58 l OCTOBER 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

3. LET HIM SUCK “Babies with colic often get a lot of comfort from sucking, which is likely to be why they want to feed so often, to try to stretch the feeding time you could try to temporarily introduce a dummy. This will soothe and give him something to suck on while you’re trying to implement the new, more structured, feeding plan.

4. CALM CONSISTANT BEDTIMES “Evenings are typically the hardest time for babies with colic, and and they’re especially difficult when you’re trying to get your older children into a bath and bed. A calming evening routine will help the

HEALTH baby to wind down and feel soothed at his most difficult time of day, so begin to implement a soothing bedtime regime that coincides with the needs of your two older children, who go to bed around 7pm”

5. 4-6 MONTHS Just when you thought that you were getting a handle on your baby’s sleep patterns, they now may start to change. Around the 4-6 month mark is a time of transition for your baby, a transition that is different for each individual. Where some babies may be down to just 2 naps per day and sleeping all through the night, others may be experiencing a sleep regression or fighting to get their baby to sleep during nap-time. The good news is is that this transition is only temporary and a full nights sleep is on the cards very soon!

Sleep tip: Transitions are challenging. Some may be visible such as transitioning out of swaddling or moving from a bassinet to the crib but some you may not be able to see. By now, you know your baby and their needs so note any changes and adapt accordingly. Suggested schedule Wake up: 7-8 AM Total time asleep: 12-15 hours Naps: 3 naps each lasting 1 to 3 hours long Time awake between naps: 1.5 to 2.5 hours Bed time: 8:30-9:30 PM Longest stretch of sleep in night: typically 4-8 hours

6. 6-10 MONTHS At this stage of a baby’s first year, you should see a distinct sleeping pattern and, at some point, your baby should be reaching the ‘sleeping through the night’ milestone. If yours isn’t, however, try not to worry too much. Every baby is different and some take longer to progress than others – 70-80% of babies are sleeping through the night by 9 months old. Sleep tip: If you want to reach this milestone quicker, begin to implement a consistent bedtime routine, learn your baby’s sleepiness cues, and start breaking any sleep associations in the months previous. Suggested schedule Wake up: 7 AM Total time asleep: 11-15 hours Naps: 2-3 naps each lasting 1 to 3 hours long Time awake between naps: 2 to 3 hours Bed time: 8-9:30 PM Longest stretch of sleep in night: typically 5-10 hours

7. GIVE HER A BURP A crying baby can gulp down a lot of air. That can make her gassy and bloated -- and make her crying worse. Burp her with gentle thumps on her back. The classic position -- with the baby’s head over your shoulder -- works, but can leave a trail of spit-up down your back. Switch things around: Lay your baby face down across your lap, or sit her up. Support her chest and neck with one of your arms.

10-12 MONTH By the end of their first year, your baby should be starting to sleep through the night whilst spending much more of their day playing and exploring instead of sleeping (albeit a few day time naps). The biggest challenge now is any potential sleep setbacks. Although sleep regression usually happens at 8-10 months old, some babies can experience it at 12 months old. This can be caused by changes to their routine or environment, by separation anxiety or different milestones. Sleep tip: Avoid sleep setbacks by staying consistent in your routine. This minimises confusion and prevents sleep regression. Suggested schedule Wake up: 6-7:30 AM Total time asleep: 11-14 hours Naps: 1-2 naps each lasting 1 to 2 hours long Time awake between naps: 2.5 to 3.5 hours Bed time: 8-9 PM Longest stretch of sleep in night: typically 7-12 hours A few sleepy tips to remember! Your baby’s sleep schedule is incredibly important, so here are a few tips to remember to make getting them to sleep just that little bit easier. Pay attention to your baby’s sleepy cues so that they don’t become overtired. Overtired babies will become fussy and harder to settle for sleep. Learn your baby’s sleep cycle so that you can identify when anything changes. Always place your baby on their back to sleep. Remember the ABCs of safe sleep: Alone, on their Backs in an empty Crib or bassinet. Stay consistent with the feeding and sleep schedule, adapt to your baby’s changes and most importantly institute that consistent bedtime routine.

8. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF One of the most important pieces of advices we can give you, is to make time for yourself. Colic can be tough on mums as well as babies and it can be exhausting and stressful. Sleep when you can and accept all offers of help. Whatever you do - don’t blame yourself or feel you are not doing an amazing job. project-baby.co.uk

HEALTH & FITNESS

An Easy

Pregnancy Workout These simple pregnancy-friendly exercises don’t take very long to do and you can fit them into your everyday life, at work or at home. If you’re not very active, these exercises are a great way to get started. Try to do them for a total of 15 minutes at first and build up from there. Add in some walking, housework or swimming and you will really start to feel the benefits.

LEG EXTENSIONS

If you already exercise regularly, this workout is a good way to boost your activity levels and keep you flexible.

1.

‘ZIPPING UP’ It’s very important to ‘zip up’ your tummy muscles before you start any exercise or strenuous movement. This could be sitting down, standing up, lifting, carrying and walking as well as more structured exercise. ‘Zipping up’ simply means tightening your core muscles to protect your back and tummy from injury. It’s easy to do: 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Imagine a thread attached to your belly button on the inside. When you zip up, you pull the thread towards your spine. If you put your finger on your belly button and tighten your tummy muscles up and inwards, you will feel your belly button move upwards slightly and the muscles around it will tighten. You should still be able to breathe normally. Now you are zipped up and protected.

LEG STRETCHES Try these while you’re doing the washing up or waiting for the kettle to boil.

These seated leg extensions are great for the muscles at the front of your thighs. You can do them at work or at home.

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Sit on a sturdy chair, feet hip-width apart and your toes, knees and hips facing forwards, with your knees over your feet. Keep your spine straight and rest your hands on your thighs. Put your shoulders back and zip up. Lift one knee to a comfortable height, keeping the leg bent. Keeping your thigh lifted, slowly get your leg as straight as possible, tightening your thigh muscles gently at the top. Then slowly return your leg back to the bent position while keeping your thigh lifted.

Do this eight to 12 times on one side and then swap to the other leg. This is a good activity to do if your work means you’re sitting at a desk all day.

THIGH TONERS 1. 2. 3. 4.

Stand with your feet a little wider than hip distance apart and your feet facing forwards. Raise your arms up in front of you to shoulder height, this will help you balance. Zip up, then slowly bend your knees as you push your bottom slightly backwards, keeping both feet flat on the floor. Try to come down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, but only come down as far as feels comfortable, and where you know you can get back up!

Repeat this 6 times. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your toes, knees and hips facing forwards. Zip up and slowly lift yourself up onto your toes, feeling the muscles in your lower legs working. You can lightly hold onto a worktop or the back of a chair to help you balance. Hold for a count of three and slowly lower yourself back down.

Repeat 15 to 20 times, rest for 30 seconds, and then do another 15 to 20.

ARM RAISES Try this in the kitchen where you have tins, bottles or bags you can lift. Or use light hand weights. The weights should be light enough for you to do around 15 repetitions at a time without your arms becoming too tired or shaky to carry on. Holding your two items in your hands, stand tall with your shoulders back and down and your arms by your side. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

1. Zip up, and with your palms facing downwards and your arms straight, slowly lift both arms up to the side until your hands are at shoulder height. 2. Slowly lower them back down. 3. Then lift both arms to the front, again with the arms straight and just as far as shoulder height. 4. Slowly lower them back down. Repeat the side and front versions 6 to 10 times each, rest for 30 seconds and repeat.

TUMMY TONER Strong tummy muscles will help support your growing baby, reduce backache and help you during the ‘pushing’ part of labour. 1. Pull your tummy in towards your spine. 2. Hold for a few seconds, then release gently. 3. Make sure you breathe normally while you’re doing this exercise and try to do it as often as you can during the day. 4. Use it when you bend or lift things to keep your back supported.

You can do this exercise in any trimester but avoid lying flat on your back after about 16 weeks.

HEALTH

Caring for your

TODDLER'S TEETH HOW CAN I HELP MY TODDLER TO HAVE STRONG TEETH? You can do a lot to ensure that your toddler’s teeth are strong and will resist decay both now and in the future. Much depends on what he eats, as well as how often he eats it. Try to keep sweets and other sugary snacks between meals to a minimum. This includes dried fruits such as raisins, which are high in sugar and can stick to teeth, as well as chocolate and cakes. When your child eats or drinks sugar, the bacteria in his mouth mix with the sugars to make a mild acid. This acid attacks

the hard outer layer of the teeth and over time can cause cavities. If your toddler has lots of sugary snacks, you are continually topping up the levels of acid in his mouth. Water and milk are the best drinks for your toddler between meals. Try not to give your toddler acidic, sugary or fizzy drinks between meals, or juice or squash in a bottle. If you give your toddler fruit juice, it should be well-diluted, and given only at mealtimes in a beaker or cup. Or you could encourage him to drink the juice through a straw, which is better for his teeth. To have healthy teeth your toddler should eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and include calcium and vitamin D in his diet. Vitamin D helps his body to absorb calcium, which he needs to grow strong bones and teeth. Dairy products such as

change image

70 l OCTOBER 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

cheese are good sources of calcium. And there’s vitamin D in milk, oily fish, eggs, and fortified foods such as margarine and breakfast cereals. If your toddler won’t drink much milk since being weaned from the breast or bottle, make sure he has dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese instead.

ARE THERE TREATMENTS THAT WILL PROTECT MY TODDLER’S TEETH? A vitamin supplement for young children which contains vitamin D may be worth considering. You can buy vitamin drops from NHS child health clinics.

HEALTH

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps to resist decay. Some children are particularly prone to tooth decay, and dentists sometimes recommend fluoride supplements as well as fluoride toothpaste. Always ask your dentist for advice before giving your toddler fluoride supplements.

When there is an increased risk of decay, or early signs of decay, your dentist may consider a treatment of fluoride varnish. The dentist paints this varnish on to your child’s teeth to stop the process of decay, or at least delay potential fillings. Talk to your dentist to find out if your child would benefit from this treatment.

HOW CAN I MINIMISE THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY SWEETS? Preventive measures are always best. Take control of sweets before your toddler discovers them. If you don’t eat sweets, and your toddler’s friends don’t, he may not meet a sweet until his second birthday. If the rest of your child’s diet is healthy, even this period without sweets will help those first teeth to get a good start. If banning sweets is impossible, you can reduce how much damage is done to the enamel on your toddler’s teeth. The more times a day your toddler eats something sugary, and the longer the sugar stays in his mouth, the more likely it is that damage will occur. Try to restrict sweet food and drink to less than four times a day, as part of three meals and one snack. A small slice of cake or a piece of chocolate to finish off a meal is less harmful to his teeth than a lollipop that your toddler sucks all afternoon. Otherwise, encourage your toddler to eat all his sweets in one short session. Give him a small piece of cheese after he has finished any sweets to neutralise the sugars, and make sure that his next teeth-cleaning session is thorough.

and stay in the gaps until the next thorough brushing, or sometimes longer.

Tooth-friendly snacks:

Cubes or slices of cheese Plain yoghurt Plain popcorn Breadsticks Plain rice cakes Fresh fruit or vegetables

HOW CAN I KEEP MY TODDLER'S TEETH CLEAN? Cleaning your toddler's teeth should be part of his daily routine, though you may need to be persistent. But you can gradually give him more responsibility for the brushing as time goes on. Clean your toddler's teeth twice a day, before breakfast, and after his last drink of the day. As you brush, clear all traces of food from on or between his teeth. Use a small toothbrush with soft, round-ended bristles of differing lengths, and a small, angled head. Change the brush at least every three months, or when the bristles start to spread out. Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste, or a pea-sized amount if your child is three years or older. Under-threes should use a low-fluoride toothpaste containing about 1,000ppm (parts per million) of fluoride. Brush using small circular movements. Don't saw from side-to-side, as this may damage his gums, and it won't scrub his teeth. Concentrate on one section of the teeth at a time, and don't forget the backs. If he's reluctant to have them cleaned, brush your teeth first and then let him try to copy you. Or see if he'd like to brush your teeth for you.

Cakes and other high-sugar foods, even if they’re homemade, can be just as damaging as sugary sweets.

Persuade, rather than force, your toddler to open his mouth, as he needs to learn to like the idea of brushing. Give him lots of praise and encouragement when he allows you to brush them. Letting him choose his own toothbrush may also make it more fun for him.

Raisins, dates and other dried fruits (whether loose or in bars) can cling to and harm teeth, even though they’re a healthier option than sweets. Your toddler should also eat these as part of a meal, rather than as a snack. Chewy sweets are worst of all, as they stick to the teeth

Supervise your child while he brushes his teeth until he is at least seven years old. By then he'll have the manual dexterity needed to clean his teeth thoroughly. When he feels ready to try, let him have a go. Show him how to brush in small circular movements, rather than from side-to-side.

Don’t wait until you see signs of tooth decay. When you go to the dentist for your own appointment, take your toddler with you.

MY TODDLER EATS TOOTHPASTE OUT OF THE TUBE. IS THIS A PROBLEM? If your toddler makes a habit of swallowing too much fluoride toothpaste while his teeth are forming, he may develop fluorosis. Fluorosis can give your toddler’s teeth a mottled look. So encourage your toddler to spit out toothpaste after brushing. Eating too much toothpaste in one go is more likely to cause a tummy ache than anything more serious. If you suspect your child has eaten a large amount of toothpaste, take your child to your doctor or to your nearest accident and emergency department. Make sure your toddler can’t get to the toothpaste tube without you knowing. He may be more likely to swallow toothpaste if it has a sweet or fruity flavour. So try a minty or neutral flavour instead.

WHEN DO WE NEED TO VISIT A DENTIST? Take your child to the dentist when he’s about a year old. Dentists can help to prevent, as well as cure teeth problems. So don’t wait until you see signs of tooth decay. When you go to the dentist for your own appointment, take your toddler with you. He’ll then get used to the sights, sounds and smells. Children’s health clinics make visits to the dentist fun for toddlers. If he is rewarded with stickers at the end of the appointment, it may make treatment later on more tolerable for him. These clinics also offer the opportunity for you to ask about anything you’re unsure of.

Don’t assume that you don’t need to take your toddler to the dentist because his first teeth are going to fall out anyway. A damaged baby tooth can cause pain and lead to a serious mouth infection. Most first teeth have nearly a decade of hard work in front of them. Good habits early on will lay the foundations for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Toddler Troubles HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE TO POTTY TRAIN?

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY TODDLER POO? Some little ones have a bowel movement right after dinner or right before bed, like clockwork. Others’ poop habits are less predictable. Most of the time it’s not a problem. When to worry? If there are major changes, such as much more frequent pooping, painful stools, blood in the stools, or ongoing diarrhea, check with your doctor.

EVERY NIGHT IS A BATTLE AT BEDTIME WHAT SHOULD I DO? Many toddlers fight bedtime -- often they just want to be where you are. Don’t cut his nap to wear him out. Most kids this age still need an afternoon nap. Cutting it can make him cranky or too wired at bedtime because he’s overtired. Instead, stick with a consistent, relaxing bedtime routine every night. Give him a comfort object like a blanket or stuffed toy, and read him a book. Does he need extra reassurance? Try a night-light, or leave the door cracked.

Top Toddler Tips 1. PICK YOUR BATTLES “If you’re always saying, ‘No, no, no,’ your child will tune out the no and won’t understand your priorities,”

2. BE CONSISTENT If your child is ready to use the toilet, it usually takes about 6 weeks from first introducing the potty to the time she’s going on her own and staying dry most of the time. Even after your child is staying dry during the day, it can be months and even years before your child can make it through the night. Although potty training is a big milestone -- and one much anticipated by parents! -- you’ll want to be sure your toddler is ready. Forcing toilet training on a child who is really resisting can backfire. Instead, try to make potty time fun (read stories, sing songs). Offer nonfood rewards like stickers or trips to the park. And don’t make your child stay on the toilet if she doesn’t want to.

“If your reaction to a situation keeps changing one day you let your son throw a ball in the house and the next you don’t -- you’ll confuse him with mixed signals.”

3 GIVE TIME OUT Before imposing a time-out, give a warning in a stern tone of voice (“I’m counting to three, and if you don’t stop, you’re going to time-out. One, two, THREE!”). If she doesn’t listen, take her to the spot you’ve designated for time-outs, and set a timer.

8 STEPS To Weaning

Must Have Weaning

1. Choose the appropriate

time. The success you have has much to do with when you decide to wean your baby from the bottle.

2. Introduce your child to a

beaker cup. This introduction can begin as early as 6 months of age.

3. Allow the baby to explore

the cup. He or she may even “play” with it rather than drink from it during the initial introduction. You will see him or her trying to use it as he or she becomes more familiar with it.

CHEWTENSILS Discovering you can feed yourself is fabulously exciting. Chewtensils help to make weaning and mealtimes even more of an adventure for your baby. The soft, textured silicone means they’re easy to grip and the back of the spoon in bumpy to stimulate tender little gums. Price: £15.00 www.kidly.com

4. Give the baby a beaker

during other feedings.

6. Replace your baby’s bottle at

other meals slowly until all meals are eaten with a beaker cup instead of a bottle.

Mealtime essentials for stylish babies. The soft silicone weaning bibs with curved neckline and adjustable sizing are perfect for feeding time, the “Catch all” food safe silicone bibs are practical and easy to wash. Price: £7.50 www.nibbling.com

FILL N SQUEEZE This clever designed soft silicone pouch topper is recommended for babies from weaning age to 2 years old. Simply insert a pouch topper over a Fill n Squeeze reusable pouch for ease of comfort for baby’s teeth and gums.

instead of a bottle during mealtime. Begin using the cup at one meal for a means of liquid once the child is familiar with the cup. This may occur at 8-to-10 months old.

5. Use the cup instead of a bottle

PERSONALISED PETER RABBIT CAKE

MAM TRAINING CUP Ease the transition from bottle to cup and from feeding to independent drinking with the MAM 2-in-1 Trainer Cup. Two simple steps will guide you through two important weaning stages. Price: £7.95 www.mambaby.co.uk

7. Remain consistent during

the weaning process. Going back and forth between the bottle and beaker cup during meals will only confuse the child.

8. Offer your child a beaker cup instead of a bottle during other times of the day such as nap time, snack time and bedtime preparation. Most babies are ready to give up their bottles and formula at 12 months.
