Choosing The Perfect Pushchair to Suit your Lifestyle

It’s hard not to feel like a beginner when you’re shopping for that first pushchair. But we all feel like that when we’re starting out, just keep in mind that lifestyle plays a big part in determining the right pushchair for you and your little one. So first things first, what do you actually even need - if you’re fully stumped head over to our beginners guide.

babies, usually while they are lying flat. You can easily turn a pushchair into a pram if it has a lie-flat seat, or with the addition of a carrycot.

But hopefully our little explanation below will help you decipher the meaning of the words ‘pushchair, pram, buggy & stroller’ - so many words that all mean sort of the same thing. And you thought Eskimos went overkill with variations on ‘snow’. Thankfully, we’re here to simplify everything and focus on what matters - helping you find the pushchair which is best for your baby, your budget and your lifestyle, whether you like to hit the shops or tackle tougher terrains.

PUSHCHAIR

From the moment you bring your baby home, to the point where they’re running around and climbing the furniture, a pushchair is an essential accessory when out and about. New and expectant parents often ask the same thing: “what’s the difference between a pram, a buggy and a pushchair?”. If we’re being honest, these terms are often used interchangeably, but for clarity’s sake there are key differences between them:

TRAVEL SYSTEM

PRAM Traditionally, a pram (also known as a perambulator if you live life like it’s 1920) is a four wheeled carriage designed especially for newborn

16 l MAY 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

A folding chair with wheels, designed for a baby or small child to be pushed around while seated.

STROLLER / BUGGY A stroller is a lightweight collapsable chair with wheels, most suited to toddlers and young children.

A pushchair with the ability to attach a car seat and/or a carrycot, usually the pieces are bought together. To find one that’s ideal, it’s recommended that you choose a pushchair that not only suits your baby’s needs but also your lifestyle, whether that’s bus-hopping on public transport, taking baby hiking or long car journeys with your brood.

LIFESTYLE

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR CAR OWNERS If your time is spent getting from A to B in a car, then a travel-system is the thing for you. Pushchair travel systems include an infant carrier (carrycot), a pushchair and a car seat, or a convertible pushchair and car seat. It’s the best way to transport your baby from the car to your next destination without waking them. You simply click the car seat out, attach it to your pushchair chassis and off you go. It’s worth looking out for pushchairs that: *Are car seat (and carrycot) compatible *Are light enough to lift in and out of a boot often *Can fold down to a compact size to take up as little boot space as possible

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR WALKING, EXERCISE & THE GREAT OUTDOORS If you live life in the fast lane, well, the bumpy lane, you’ll need an all-terrain pushchair. All-terrain pushchairs are great for frequent strolls in the park, walking the dog, or a trip to the woods. They offer stability and adaptable handlebars for travelling in complete comfort. It’s best to look out for pushchairs that include: *Large wheels to comfortably navigate different surfaces (three wheelers are a great choice) *Great suspension that can keep up with the twists and turns on a brisk morning jog or a hike *Adjustable handlebars to offer you greater comfort as you push

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR GROWING FAMILIES If you’re already bringing up a little one and planning on adding a new edition to your family (we know, baby steps...) thinking about which pushchair you choose can save you time and money down the line. A pushchair that can be converted into a multi-child pushchair, or can adapt to additional features like an extra seat or stroller platform (so the big kid can come along for the ride) is ideal. Then you’re ready to go as soon as your new arrival makes an appearance. If you are expecting twins, you won’t get far without a double, tandem or convertible pushchair. Each one breaks down like this: *Twin pushchairs allow your babies to sit side by side *Tandem pushchairs place one child in-front of the next for a narrow, longer frame *Convertible pushchairs let you add an additional seat on at a later date (some even replace a seat with a shopping basket)

BEST PUSHCHAIRS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT Manoeuvring a pushchair on and off a train, tube or bus can be a struggle, and an absolute nightmare for yourself and everyone around you, but it doesn’t have to be this way. If public transport is a part of your daily life, consider picking a pushchair that: * Is lightweight and foldable - making it easy to lift on and off public transport *Is small enough to push on a bus or train *Has large enough wheels so they won’t get stuck in gaps between the pavement or the platform *Fits in designated pushchair spaces and aisles on buses and trains

Hopefully we’ve given you some different options to consider, and make a mountain of information not seem so, well, mountainous. Happy hunting!

PREGNANCY

Pregnancy DURING A PANDEMIC

Questions& Answers Congratulatioms, you’re pregnant! Even if you have been pregnant before, you will have lots of questions about how you can look after yourself and your bump over the 9 months and your bound to have even more questions when you throw a pandemic into the mix. Here we have some answers to your questions.

1. WHAT ARE TRIMESTERS The length of pregnancy is split into three time frames and these are called trimesters. The first covers weeks 0-13 weeks, the second 14-26 weeks ad the third weeks 27-40+

2. WHEN CAN I SHARE MY NEWS Many women keep their news quiet until 12 or 13 weeks when there’s less risk of miscarriage ad after their first sca. If you do decide to keep it to yourself, maybe share with a couple of close friends so they can share your excitment.

18 l MAY 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

3. WHEN DO PREGNANCY CRAVINGS START? There isn’t a specific time when pregnancy food cravings start. It’s different for every woman – and you may not necessarily have any cravings. If you do start having cravings, it’ll probably be in your first trimester (it could be as early as 5 weeks into pregnancy). They’ll get stronger in your second trimester, and then eventually stop in your third trimester.

4. HOW MUCH WEIGHT SHOULD I GAIN IN PREGNANCY? Weight gain in pregnancy varies from person to person. It also depends on your weight before you become pregnant. Most pregnant women gain between 10kg and 12.5kg (22lb to 26lb), putting on most of the weight after week 20. Much of the extra weight is due to your baby growing, but your body will also be storing fat, ready to make breast milk after your baby is born.

PREGNANCY

5. WHAT PRENATAL VITAMINS SHOULD I TAKE? You’ll get most of the vitamins and minerals you need by eating a healthy, varied diet. But when you’re pregnant (and while you are trying to get pregnant) you also need to take a folic acid supplement. It’s also recommended you take a daily vitamin D supplement – especially in the winter months (October to March) when you don’t get enough from the sunlight.

6. HOW DOES CORONAVIRUS AFFECT PREGNANCY?

7. SHOULD I ATTEND MY ANTENATAL APPOINTMENTS? Yes, as long as you are well – it’s really important that you attend your routine appointments. If you are unwell, contact your community midwife to postpone your visits until the isolation period is over. Maternity care is essential. It has been developed over many years to reduce complications in mothers and babies. Not attending appointments can increase the risk of harm to you and your baby. You should still have a whooping cough (pertussis) vaccination – ideally between 16 and 32 weeks. Talk to your midwife or general practice nurse about getting the vaccine

8. I AM FEELING ANXIOUS - WHERE CAN I GET HELP? TUnderstandably, you may be worried and have lots of questions at this time. Have a look at Tommy’s mental wellbeing page for advice on taking care of yourself before, during and after pregnancy.

9. ARE MY MOOD SWINGS NORMAL Many women experience emotional mood swings throughout pregnancy. It’s natural to go through a variety of emotions as hormones are adjusting and the body is changing.

10. I HAVE A METALLIC TASTE IN MY MOUTH IS THAT NORMAL Some women complain of an odd “metallic” taste in their mouths during pregnancy. While there is no scientific explanation for this symptom, for some it can last throughout their entire pregnancy.

11. VIVID DREAMS Dreams during pregnancy often intensify. So if your dreaming has become more dramatic this could be a symptom you’re expecting. (Thank your surging hormones for this one!)

12.DISCHARGE It’s normal to have some discharge during pregnancy. It’s normal to have a lot, actually. It’s not awesome, but it is normal.

At the moment, it’s expected that most pregnant women will experience mild or moderate cold or flu-like symptoms. Pregnant women have been placed in the ‘vulnerable group’ by the Chief Medical Officer. There is no evidence to suggest being pregnant means you’re more likely to get coronavirus. However, for a small number of women, it does mean being pregnant may change the way their body handles severe viral infection. If you’re pregnant and have an underlying health condition, such as asthma or diabetes, you may be more unwell if you develop the virus. If you have significant heart disease, congenital or acquired, you are considered extremely vulnerable and should follow the government advice and guidance.

JOIN A VIRTUAL CLASS OR GROUP HAPPY BABY HAPPY PARENTS We’d lost count of the number of times people told us their antenatal courses didn’t prepare them for reality.

MANtenatal

So we brought together a team of experts in all things pregnancy, child birth and parenting and decided to do something about it.

MANtenatal was created by a father of 4 who has attended not one but two full antenatal courses over a 10 year period. On both occasions, the classes were good but they never seemed to give enough focus on men and what they need to be better dads. The other thing he spotted during these courses was the heavy reliance on theory and flipcharts. Parenthood is not about theory or what it says in books… you have to get stuck in and literally get your hands dirty! Yes, that does mean poo… So this is where MANtenatal steps in. Join other guys in a safe environment where nothing is taboo. Ask anything you want, there won’t be any rolling eyes or looks of ‘wait until I get you home’… These classes are designed to help you play your part in becoming the best dad you can be.

PREGNANCY

Giving Birth

DURING A PANDEMIC Covid-19 virus infection and pregnancy. Update supplied by NHS - Press Office

BIRTH PARTNERS We are currently only allowing one birth partner to limit the spread of Covid-19.

SUSPENSION OF HOMEBIRTH SERVICES Due to the current concerns regarding Covid-19 and the impact on the NHS workforce, we will be temporarily suspending our homebirth services. This will enable us to provide safe care to all women having a baby under our care. All women booked with our homebirth team will be informed of these changes with a plan to give birth in our Midwifery-Led Unit under the care of the Homebirth Team Midwives. We will also not be providing waterbirth during this time. We ask for your co-operation in supporting this and apologise for the inconvenience. We hope that we will be able to resume normal services once this critical period is over. For women who choose not to attend the Maternity Unit when in labour i.e. giving birth at home, we will not be able to guarantee the availability of a midwife to attend you. This decision will be at your discretion and risk, but we would encourage you to contact maternity triage for further advice when you are in labour.

WHAT EFFECT DOES CORONAVIRUS HAVE ON PREGNANT WOMEN? Pregnant women do not appear to be more susceptible to the consequences of coronavirus than the general population. As this is a new

22 l MAY 2020 l

project-baby.co.uk

virus, how it may affect you is not yet clear. It is expected the large majority of pregnant women will experience only mild or moderate cold/flu like symptoms. More severe symptoms such as pneumonia appear to be more common in older people, those with weakened immune systems or long-term conditions. There are no reported deaths of pregnant women from coronavirus at the moment. If you are pregnant you are more vulnerable to getting infections than a woman who is not pregnant. If you have an underlying heart or lung c ondition, such as asthma, you may be more unwell if you have coronavirus.

WHAT EFFECT WILL CORONAVIRUS HAVE ON MY BABY IF I AM DIAGNOSED WITH THE INFECTION? As this is a very new virus we are just beginning to learn about it. There is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage. With regard to vertical transmission (transmission from mother to baby) the evidence now suggest that transmission is probable, although there has only been a single case reported. The significance to the neonate is not yet known and we will continue to assess and monitor the situation for women and babies. Some babies born to women with symptoms of coronavirus in China have been born prematurely. It is unclear whether coronavirus caused this or the doctors made the decision for the baby to be born early because the woman was unwell. As we learn about the risk of pre-term birth and coronavirus infection, we will update this information.

PREGNANCY

WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE MY RISK OF CATCHING CORONAVIRUS? The most important thing to do is to wash your hands regularly and effectively as soon as you come from public places to your home or workplace. There is useful advice on the NHS website on the best way to reduce any infection risk, not just for coronavirus, but for other things like colds and flu.

WHAT IS THE TRAVEL ADVICE IF I AM PREGNANT? If you are in the UK, you should follow the advice given by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which is being regularly updated in line with the evolving situation. All individuals, including pregnant women, should ensure they have adequate insurance arrangements prior to travel. You should also check that your travel insurance will provide cover for birth and care of your newborn baby if you give birth while abroad.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I THINK I MAY HAVE CORONAVIRUS OR BEEN EXPOSED TO IT? If you are pregnant and: You think you might have coronavirus You’ve been in close contact with someone with coronavirus You should phone NHS 111 or use the NHS 111 online tool for further advice, and say you are pregnant. You should also contact the maternity unit looking after your pregnancy to inform them of the advice you have been given by the NHS 111 service.

HOW WILL I BE TESTED FOR CORONAVIRUS? The process for diagnosing coronavirus infection is changing rapidly. At the current time, if you need a test for coronavirus, you will be advised to self-isolate and diagnostic swabs will be arranged. You may need to attend a hospital, or be tested at home. You will be tested in the same way as anyone being tested, regardless of the fact that you are pregnant. Currently, the test involves swabs being taken from your mouth and nose. You may also be asked to cough up sputum, a mixture of saliva and mucous.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I TESTPOSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS? If you test positive for coronavirus, you should contact your midwife or antenatal team to make them aware of your diagnosis. If you have no symptoms, or mild symptoms, you will be advised to recover at home. If you have more severe symptoms, you might be treated in a hospital setting.

WHY WOULD I BE ASKED TO SELF-ISOLATE? You may be advised to self-isolate because: You have come into contact with someone who has coronavirus You have visited a particular area or country with a high-risk of coronavirus You have symptoms suggestive of coronavirus and are waiting to be tested, or for your results.

You have tested positive for coronavirus and you’ve been advised to recover at home

CAN I STILL ATTEND MY ANTENATAL APPOINTMENTS IF I AM IN SELF-ISOLATION? You should contact your midwife or antenatal clinic to inform them that you are currently in self-isolation for possible/confirmed coronavirus and request advice on attending routine antenatal appointments. It is likely that routine antenatal appointments will be delayed until isolation ends. If your midwife or doctor advises that your appointment cannot wait, the necessary arrangements will be made for you to be seen. For example, you may be asked to attend at a different time, or in a different clinic, to protect other patients.

HOW WILL MY CARE BE MANAGED AFTER I HAVE RECOVERED FROM CORONAVIRUS? As a precautionary approach, an ultrasound scan will be arranged 14 days after your recovery, to check that your baby is well. This 14 day period may be reduced as more information on how infected people are in recovery becomes available. If you have recovered from coronavirus and tested negative for the virus before you go into labour, where and how you give birth will not be affected by your previous illness.

WHAT DO I DO IF I FEEL UNWELL OR I’M WORRIED ABOUT MY BABY DURING SELF-ISOLATION? Pregnant women are advised not to attend maternity triage units or A&E unless in need of urgent pregnancy or medical care. If you have concerns about the wellbeing of yourself or your unborn baby during your self-isolation period, contact your midwife, or out-ofhours, your maternity team. They will provide further advice, including whether you need to attend hospital. If attendance at the maternity unit or hospital is advised, pregnant women are requested to travel by private transport, or arrange hospital transport, and alert the maternity triage reception once on the premises, prior to entering the hospital.

WILL BEING IN SELF-ISOLATION FOR SUSPECTED OR CONFIRMED CORONAVIRUS AFFECT WHERE I GIVE BIRTH? As a precautionary approach, pregnant women with suspected or confirmed coronavirus when they go into labour, are being advised to attend an obstetric unit for birth, where the baby can be monitored using continuous electronic fetal monitoring, and your oxygen levels can be monitored hourly. The continuous fetal monitoring is to check how your baby is coping with labour. As continuous fetal monitoring can only take place in an obstetric unit, where doctors and midwives are present, it is not currently recommended that you give birth at home or in a midwife led unit, where only midwives would be present.

Almost half (43%) of parents believe the Coronavirus crisis will alter the way UK babies are named – and seven per cent of mums-to-be have already changed a name choice due to the pandemic..

The survey was conducted between 28-29 May 2020 by www.ChannelMum.com

Naming Baby

During a Pandemic ChannelMum.com baby name expert SJ Strum said:

“Baby names reflect changing times and never more so than when the world is facing a catastrophe. The current crisis means parents are understandably stressed and anxious, so are using new-born’s names to celebrate new life and joy. Positive names are a wonderful way to keep focusing on the future and means that the child knows their name has real meaning.”. However, the coronavirus pandemic means parents are now choosing more positive names for their children. Seven in ten have listed hopeful ‘virtue’ names, with Faith, Hope, Charity, Patience and Constance predicted to come back into fashion. Over half (54%) would consider a Rainbow name after the kids’ art trend. Popular picks include Iris, meaning Rainbow in Greek, alongside Indigo and Blue. But Violet is out because of its closeness to ‘virus’. Also popular are Hero names to honour our key workers, the poll of 1,300 parents for ChannelMum.com found. Top choices are the gender-neutral Hero, Avery and Bravery plus Maverick for boys, with three in ten backing a rise in popularity.

Meanwhile Florence – which is currently number 15 in the baby name charts – could jump into the top ten girl’s names as half consider it, due to its links with the Nightingale hospitals. Amongst the current uncertainty, a new trend has also emerged for ‘secure’ names, including Haven and Harbour. One in five parents said they would consider a secure name for their child, as the crisis continues. Happy names are popular with a third of new parents, in a bid to beat lockdown gloom and celebrate new life. The most selected names include Bliss, Joy, Blythe and Felicity for girls, alongside Pax and Sol for boys. One in ten even believes Wickes or Wix could be used as a baby name after school PE fitness video hero Joe Wicks, while the name Joe – currently ranked 316th - could rise through the name charts again.
