If your reading this then you may well be pregnant ... Or maybe your baby is already here... Either way, congratulations and welcome to parenthood! Welcome to a very exciting edition of Project Baby. As you read this we would have attended The Baby Show as the official media sponsor. A very exciting step for our family run magazine! Perhaps you are one of the thousands of new parents we met over the course of the weekend at London Olympia! We are delighted to share with you our Project Baby award winners. Deciding the winners was no easy task with so many unique entries, so we say a massive congratulations to all our finalists! Turn to page 41 to find out who won. With Christmas just around the corner it is hard to think about getting away on a Summer holiday next year but with all the best resorts getting booked up it really is something worth considering soon. We visited a beautiful resort in Majorca this Summer and provide a full review of our family trip on page 26. Baby showers and baby-welcoming ceremonies are filled with joy - and fraught with expectations. To ensure a good time will be had by all, we have put together some guidelines for hosts, guests, and parents-to-be on page 24. Finally with only two months till the big man in red makes his appearance we have put together our extensive Christmas gift guide on page 47. Wishing you a fabulous festive season.... I’m off to enjoy Georgie Porgie’s Christmas pudding, you can purchase yours from Liberty this Christmas. Happy Reading.

SUPER WAYS TO

Enjoy Your Maternity Leave

7 L

Learning to enjoy maternity leave isn’t easy for everyone. We’ve narrowed down some tips and tricks from the pros about how to make your time off count. There’s more to maternity leave than changing nappies and watching Jeremy Kyle. Make it a special time for you and your baby.

Prearrange at Least Three Days of Help Line up your help, and play to each person’s strengths. For example, your mother might be great at grocery shopping and cooking, but virtually useless when it comes to waking up at night for a feeding. Your friend might be great at entertaining you with “Sex and the City” DVDs and keeping you company when you get lonely, but be hopeless at diaper changes. Getting help early makes it a lot more likely that you’ll feel energized and ready to have fun later on.

ACCEPT THE FIRST WEEKS WILL BE HARD Those first few weeks with a newborn are a shock to everyone’s system. You’re getting used to being a sleep-deprived, milk-leaking mom; your baby is adjusting to living outside the warm comfort of your womb; and your husband is adjusting to being a dad.

This is not the time to pressure yourself into running around being social or productive. Simply walking around the block can feel like a major accomplishment. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t make plans; just make sure the fun is on your terms and works for you. That cute little bistro where you and your best buddy used to brunch may be too cramped for a stroller.

PREGNANCY

TEST GEAR

Mums-to-be Bucket List 1. Eat the entire confectionery contents of a corner shop. 2. Go to the cinema, loads. 3. Get a completely useless, expensive beauty treatment. 4. Treat yourself to a beautiful, very small, impractical bag.

I lived in fear of the BabyBjorn. Never mind that it’s hands down the most convenient way to carry a newborn. There are so many straps and buckles, I was afraid I was going to hang myself or that the baby would slip out through a leg hole onto the road. The lesson: Try out the gear you fear before you have the baby so you’ll have the hang of using it by the time he’s arrived. Return any stuff you don’t like before you break it or baby spits up on it, whichever comes first.

ME TIME Allow yourself some ‘me’ time Try to give yourself some down time between leaving work and the baby’s arrival.

Ideally, you’ll have finished your baby shopping and can concentrate on the important things like sleeping, reading and watching Mad Men – those simple pleasures that are soon to become precious luxuries. Oh and triple checking you’ve packed your hospital bag. Make the most of your baby nap gap. Forget Facebook and Homes Under The Hammer – use your baby’s nap times to do something constructive. Whether it’s writing that novel, researching your amazing business idea or teaching yourself how to knit, maternity leave is the perfect time to let your creative juices flow.

Spend the day in your PJs Why? Because a) you can and b) you deserve it!

5. Take a day trip ALONE. MAKE MUMMY FRIENDS Brand-new parenthood can be lonely, especially after your help has departed and you’re facing time alone with a helpless baby. So if you see another pregnant woman at Starbucks every day, strike up a conversation.

WILL YOU GO TO WORK OR STAY HOME? Another vital issue when it comes to choosing new mommy friends is whether you’re planning to go back to work or stay home. Here’s the problem: If you’re going to stay at home, no matter how much you bond with the working types, you’re not going to see each other much once leave is over. So it’s best to find a mix of both mums you’ll see at the playground every day, and mums you can walk with on weekends. Working mums can really benefit from friendships with other working mums because they often have the same schedule and experience similar issues.

WORK OR A FAMILY? OR BOTH? This is a question Beth Follini from Ticktock Coaching gets a lot. She’s a life coach who helps women decide whether or not they want children. “If work is your passion and you don’t have a strong desire to have a child, do you have to give up your life’s work for motherhood? My job is to show people their choices – it might be difficult but they can make it work.” Follini asks clients to identify senior female role models in their industry and analyse how they manage career and children. She also cautions against caring too much about what everyone else says or does. Since becoming a mother I know I’ve been guilty of urging friends wavering on the issue of parenthood to go for it – I love it, so they will, right? But doing it before you are ready could cause resentment towards your new lifestyle, partner and baby. “I would never tell people to just do it,” says Follini. “Women can feel overwhelmed by everyone else’s opinion. Listen to your own voice and feel confident in it.”

EAT YOURSELF PREGNANT In this fabulous new full-colour cook-book Zita shows you 80 tasty and easy to prepare recipes that are packed full of all the most important nutrients your body needs to prepare for a successful pregnancy.

I had no inkling as to how much becoming a mother would change my life. Four years ago, I had a glamorous senior job on a fashion magazine in London, I travelled extensively, I went to parties with the A-list, I wore Louboutins. Now I have two small children, I work freelance three days a week, and you’re more likely to find me on a bouncy castle in my Converse. My life in 2012 is not better or worse than my life in 2008, it’s just different. You find a way to make motherhood work for you; you get on with it. I didn’t ever get the corner office in New York, but I still visit on work trips. I’m toying with Glastonbury sans enfants next summer, just like the good old days (but I’ll have to go to bed earlier).

My advice? Ditch the pre-baby bucket list. Don’t do it unless you feel ready but don’t ever expect to feel completely ready. And if that thin blue line comes out of the blue? If you find out, unexpectedly, that you’re pregnant? Take a deep breath, take 100 deep breaths if you need to, and don’t panic. I promise that you’ll make it work, if you want to, like you always do. Your life will change, but you won’t.

Shower A Quick Etiquette Guide to Baby Celebrations

WHO SHOULD HOST? WHO TO INVITE? ARE MEN ALLOWED? Baby showers and baby-welcoming ceremonies are filled with joy -- and fraught with expectations. To ensure a good time will be had by all, here are some guidelines for hosts, guests, and parents-to-be. Baby showers are a relatively recent phenomenon -- they became common only after World War II, during the baby boom of the 1940s and ‘50s. Still, they’ve developed their own traditions and etiquette.

24 l NOV/DEC 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

WHO SHOULD HOST A BABY SHOWER? Tradition states that a shower should not be hosted by a close family member of the parents-to-be, but instead by a friend or more distant relative, such as a cousin or an aunt. This rule was meant to avoid the appearance that the family was simply on a mission to collect gifts. However, like many traditions, this rule isn’t strictly observed these days. In fact, it’s usually considered perfectly acceptable for a sister, motherin-law, or even the guest of honor’s mother to host or co-host a shower. It’s still unusual for a mother-to-be to host her own shower, though.

WHO SHOULD BE INVITED? Close friends are a natural for the guest list, as are family members. Beyond that, when you’re thinking of adding someone to the list, consider whether it would be appropriate to ask that person to buy a

PREGNANCY

gift for the guest of honor, since that’s what’s expected of a shower guest. You should certainly consult with the guest of honor on the list and let her invite whomever she wants (keeping in mind any limitations on space, of course).

WHAT ABOUT THE DAD-TO-BEAND MALE GUESTS? It’s becoming more and more common to include men -- friends, spouses, relatives -- on the guest list. But it does change the chemistry of the party. You need to decide whether you want that traditional “female-bonding ritual,” with lots of oohing and aahing over adorable baby clothes and exchanging of labor tales, or whether you’re looking for a more coed experience. Also, consider the personality of the dadto-be; some may relish sharing in every aspect of the pregnancy, while others may be uncomfortable with the idea of being a guest of honor at a baby shower. The mom-to-be should be able to give you a good reading on this. Even at a “girl power” party, the expectant dad often makes an appearance toward the end of the shower to thank everyone for the gifts. And if you opt to include male guests, take a look at some of our coed-friendly shower ideas.

SECOND BABY SHOWER? WHEN TO SHOWER? THEME NEEDED? Can a shower be given to celebrate a second baby -- or one even further down in the birth order? Every pregnancy deserves to be toasted and cheered. But, since the true purpose of a baby shower is to help new parents acquire the gear and supplies they’ll need, it’s probably not necessary to give a traditional baby shower for parents who have a basement full of baby clothes and equipment. Instead, consider throwing a shower designed to make their lives easier when they’ve got a newborn and another child or two to juggle: a “stock the freezer” shower, for example, or a “Mum and Dad” shower, with gifts like their favorite movies on video or DVD or promises for baby-sitting services. (Click below for more details and shower ideas)!

ARE INVITEES WHO CAN’T ATTEND THE SHOWER OBLIGED TO GIVE GIFTS? No. If they wish, they may send a package to the home of the host, who can have it on hand to be opened at the shower. But they certainly aren’t obliged to do so -- a shower invitation is an invitation to a party, not a demand for a gift. It would be perfectly fine for the invitee who can’t make the party to wait until the baby is born, and then send a gift.

3 of the Best

BABY SHOWER GIFTS ELEPHANT KNIT TOY Price: £22.50 www.albetta.co.uk

WHEN SHOULD THE SHOWER BE HELD? Showers are typically given four to six weeks before the baby’s due date -- late enough so that the pregnancy is well along, but early enough so that the baby is unlikely to arrive before the party day does. Sometimes, for religious, cultural or other reasons, parents-to-be prefer not to receive gifts until after the baby is born (in certain traditions, it’s considered bad luck to acquire baby items beforehand). In that case, you could begin some preliminary planning, but wait until after the baby is born to set a shower date. For parents adopting a child, you might set a date once the child has arrived in their home.

DOES IT NEED TO HAVE A THEME, AND MUST THERE BE GAMES PLAYED? No. The hosts should take their cues from the style and tastes of the expectant parent. There’s no rule stating that games must be played, or that the color scheme must be pastel. The shower should be designed for the delight the guest of honor. (On the other hand, the guest of honor should maintain a sense of graciousness and good humor if she finds herself at the center of a party that’s not precisely her style).

HOLIDAY REVIEW

The Perfect Gamily Getaway HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY YET? Nestled on the east coast of beautiful Majorca, right next to a white-sand cove beach, surrounded by palms, pine trees and lawns is Insotel Cala Mandia Resort. Just a 5-minute drive from Porto Cristo, a lazy fishing village with a relaxing vibe, perfect if you want to retreat and get away from it all, but still within easy reach of the more lively resort of Cala Millor which is only a short taxi ride away. We arrived at Cala Mandia at around midday on a busy day in August at the heart of the school holidays. We were welcomed into the hotel and very quickly we were given all the relevant information regarding our stay and escorted to our room. Myself and my husband along with our 12 year old son were staying in a deluxe room which I could not fault, we had a massive bed, large terrace balcony and the bathroom was spacious and clean, Henry had his own lounge area which doubled as his bedroom. We were also perfectly positioned within the resort, just above the main pool with a view of the sea.

All rooms are at least 40 square meters and feature a separate enclosed bathroom area, as well as small living area. 26 l NOV/DEC 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

The resort is separated into three sections: Area A, which houses the main pools, the main dinning areas, the spa, one of the main evening entertainment areas as well as a gorgeous adult only pool, bar and restaurant for when you need to spend a few hours away from the kids. Area B, consists of a nice pool, a tapas restaurant and the outdoor stage for more live evening entertainment. Area C, home to the water/splash park, large pool, a grill restaurant, an outdoor playground, all the sports facilities which include a basketball court, tennis courts and to Henrys delight a 4G football pitch.

HOLIDAY REVIEW

We spent the majority of our time in Area A, finding the same spot next to the main pool almost every day. The pool was busy without being too busy and the constant supply of chocolate ice creams kept my husband and son very happy in the blistering heat. Various activities were put on throughout the day in and around the pool including two pool aerobics sessions and a water polo match which became quite competitive to say the least.

Bikes can be hired from the hotel at a low cost. Just a short walk down a picturess walkway from the resort is one of two cove beaches which are very close to each other. We often took a stroll down here and spent one of our days at the beach where we were able to hire sun beds and sip cocktails from the beach bar whilst reading a good book. The sea was quite choppy on this particular day but the water was still crystal clear and lifeguards were keeping a watchful eye.

If you fancied a day out of the resort, one of the islands top attractions the Caves of Drach is a short taxi drive away. Back at the resort the food choices were varied and delicious, breakfast and lunch had everything you would expect including a variety of healthy options. We are a family of fussy eaters however for dinner we always found something we liked. We could choose one evening meal at the tapas restaurant, one at the Grill restaurant and one at the adults only restaurant which we took full advantage of on an evening when Henry was busy being entertained at a club, the rest of the week we ate at the main buffet style restaurant which was more than satisfactory. From time to time the hotel staff gave out sangria or champagne cocktails as guests entered the restaurants.

There was also a snack bar during the day which offered a good variety of food and ice creams. The bar was brilliant and the staff were very friendly. From 7pm-8pm every evening there was a disco for the little ones, all the children get involved and the staff were incredible with them. Although too young for Henry who just wants to play on his phone, this did lead perfectly into the main entertainment which usually started at about 9pm in one of the main entertainment areas. The shows were some of the best we have ever seen at a family resort and we found it was very easy to make new friends.

HOLIDAY REVIEW

SKI HOLIDAYS SNOWSURE GLACIER SKIING Off the slopes there’s a really lively atmosphere and après ski scene spread across the 2km long main street. There’s a great selection of bars to choose between, including some friendly pubs, sports bars, clubs and a couple of quiet, more traditional après venues. There are also plenty of restaurants to whet your appetite, including some simple pub food and crêperies, and we always recommend trying out the traditional Savoyard cuisine.

Friends of ours also recently stayed at Cala Mandia with a 2 and 4 year old and found the resort equally as good. They spent most of their time at the splash park as well as making full use of all the kids clubs which allowed them a good few hours each day to relax at the adults only pool. All in all Cala Mandia was an excellent choice of holiday, it is a family friendly resort but also caters for adult only groups. One of the stand out reasons we enjoyed ourselves so much was the staff, not only the management team who were excellent but the entertainment staff who were constantly trying to get us involved with activities and we instantly found ourselves on first name terms with most of them. The resort was clean, the food was excellent and there was a constant flow of activities for children of all ages.

Summary THE JOURNEY A two hour flight from the UK means Majorca will always be a great option for families, however Cala Mandia is on the other side of the island from the airport so the transfer will take at least an hour.

BOHINJ SKI HOLIDAYS This collection of small villages that surround the beautiful Lake Bohinj are dominated by the magnificent Julian Alps, affording some spectacular scenery. The main ski area of Vogel overlooks the the lake itself, offering a wonderful experience for all winter activities. The majority of runs are ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers. A superb ski school is on hand for those who are new to the sport, or just want to improve their skills.

THE LOCATION The location around the main hotel is very nice and has a supermarket, shops and a few bars. Quiet fishing village Porto Christo is just 4km away. The beach is a very short distance from the hotel and is very good.

THE HOTEL Lovely and clean in a beautiful setting. Many swimming pools to choose from without the normal rush in the mornings for sunbeds.

THE ROOMS All rooms are at least 40 square meters and feature a separate enclosed bathroom area, as well as a small living area. They also come with a safe.

FOOD & FACILITIES At least 5 restaurants each with a great variety of food to pick from.

ST JOHANN SCHNEEWINKEL With many north-facing slopes, the resort boasts a good snow record and is an excellent choice for groups of mixed ability skiers. The Schneewinkel area pass - covering over 117km of slopes opens up a wealth of other possibilities and encompasses the ski areas of Waidring and Steinplatte, all linked by local bus services.

ENTERTAINMENT Daily clubs for all ages, fitness and games around the pools throughout the day and a great choice of live entertainment each night.

Zita West and Leonora Bamford Team Up to Launch Range of Children’s Supplements Fertility and pregnancy expert, Zita West and MyBaba parenting website founder, Leonora Bamford address a gap in the market for high quality vitamins for children. 28 April 2015. Long-term friends, Zita West and Leonora Bamford, have teamed up to bring out a range of supplements, specially created for children, which will be available 21 May 2015. The range will launch with a multivitamin and probiotic which comes in the form of a delicious berry flavoured powder, which can be added to drinks or sprinkled on top of cereal or yoghurt for a nutritious start to the day. Zita and Leonora identified a gap in the market when it comes to choosing nutritional supplements for children, especially in order to nourish children to help build healthier bodies. Leonora, a mum of two, found the nutritional supplement market confusing and overwhelming, with so many different products to choose from. She found it challenging to find a combined formula tailored to the age of her children with the quality of key ingredients developed using scientific research that she was looking for. Leonora says, “Through my website and from having two young children of my own, I hear from many parents wanting advice as to whether their children should take supplements. Their children are suffering with everything from skin conditions to bowel problems and seem to have everlasting colds and sniffles. I’m frequently asked about vitamins, but parents are always, understandably, cautious about what to give their children. I wanted to team up with Zita, who I knew I could trust to find the perfect solution!” Zita West’s interest has been in health and supplements for fertility and pregnancy. “I see many of the women that I look after before they are pregnant and then during their pregnancies, however, I don’t tend to see them again until they are ready to try for their second,” comments Zita. “Many of these mums are asking me questions about what they should be giving their children, so it was a natural progression for me to expand into the toddler market.” The multivitamin and probiotic powder aimed at children aged 12 months to four years. This age group has been identified as the most in need of a nutritional boost. With busy schedules, fussy eaters and processed foods, children

often do not meet all of their recommended daily value of nutrients. In fact, figures from the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows that on average from food sources alone, toddlers are only achieving one quarter of recommended levels of vitamin D. This has a significant role in the regulation of the immune system and can reduce the risk of certain bacterial and viral infections. However, any supplement is only as good as a child’s willingness to take it and parents know that children can be finicky about the taste no matter how nutritious. This is why the multi-biotic formula in this brand new product range comes in a delicious powder form and contains a mix of vitamins, minerals and probiotics. The multivitamin and probiotic will retail at £29.95 for a three-month supply and will be available to purchase online at www.mybaba.com and at www.zitawest.com. Additions to the range will include supplements for children aimed at supporting key stages of development from birth onwards. The formulation contains 100% or more of the recommended NRV (Nutritional Reference Value) of 14 essential vitamins along with a high level (12.5 billion) of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium based friendly microflora. Along with Vitamin D, which is also needed for the normal development of children’s bones and teeth, it also contains Iron to help with their normal cognitive development, and Vitamins C and A plus Zinc and Selenium to help support their immune system. There’s a clever combination of B vitamins too, including B1, B2 and Panto thenic Acid to help with the release of energy from foods.

Postnatal Depression:

KNOW THE SIGNS iCandy’s expert midwife & health visitor, Katie Hilton Recent research has demonstrated that three quarters of new mothers experience undiagnosed postnatal depression, the main reason being because these women are ashamed to speak about how they are feeling. Postnatal depression is an easily treatable and common condition. To help you understand postnatal depression we have detailed the signs and symptoms and explained how both your friends and family can support you and the treatments available.

SPOTTING THE SIGNS OF POSTNATAL DEPRESSION

T

The signs of postnatal depression are very similar to those you would see with general depression. They can develop anywhere from weeks to months after the birth of your baby. The three most common symptoms exhibited include feelings of unhappiness, loss of appetite and libido, feelings of low self-esteem and insomnia. Some women may also experience feelings of anxiety, guilt, loss of interest in day-to-day activities, inability to concentrate, memory loss and either over concern or lack of concern for the baby. If you experience any of these feelings for longer than a couple of weeks it will be important to contact your Health Visitor for advice and support.

32 l NOV/DEC 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

HOW TO HELP YOURSELF The most important step will be talking to someone about how you are feeling. This could be your partner, a family member or friend or your GP or Health Visitor. You will need to feel comfortable opening up to this person. If you choose to initially disclose your feelings to a family member or friend it will then be important to also approach your Health Visitor or GP.

You may want to have a support person with you for your first meeting. A Midwife will visit all new mothers immediately after birth; the Health Visitor will take over at 10 days postpartum and be on hand for advice and support. You will also visit your GP at 6 weeks postpartum. These appointments and visits are designed to ensure everything is okay with both you and your baby. You will be asked about your general mood and how you are feeling. This is an ideal time to discuss any concerns you may be experiencing. Many Health Visitors and GP’s will most likely pick up the early signs of postnatal depression. However, if they don’t then you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable about disclosing how you feel. Treating postnatal depression earlier rather than later is better for both you and your baby.

PREGNANCY

HOW CAN FRIENDS AND FAMILY OFFER SUPPORT? If you believe a friend or family member is experiencing postnatal depression, there are a number of ways you can help. One of the best ways to offer support is to be a listening ear in a nonjudgemental way. Be there when she needs to talk, but respect her privacy when she wants to be alone. Give her a break by taking the baby for a walk, watching the baby whilst she takes a bath or visits the hairdresser. Getting out and about can also be beneficial, ask her is she would like you to accompany her on a walk or go for coffee. If you notice your friend or family member looking unhappy or displaying feelings of guilt or low self-esteem she won’t admit to, it may be useful to gently ask if she would like to talk or if she would like you to accompany her to the Health Visitor or GP. Try not to criticise, a new mother with postnatal depression will likely be experiencing overwhelming feelings of guilt and should not be made to feel worse. She will most probably not feel up to socialising or seeking out support groups, so you could perhaps do this for her.

WHY SHOULD POSTNATAL DEPRESSION BE TREATED? Research has demonstrated that postnatal depression if left untreated can have a detrimental impact on the long-term relationship between you and your baby. Your baby is in tune with your emotions and may react accordingly. If a mother is suffering from postnatal depression, the baby may start to refuse the breast

and can be more difficult to soothe. This in turn can lead to the baby becoming withdrawn. Studies have also shown that boys in particular can be affected by postnatal depression, which could possibly lead to depression during the early years and adolescence.

HOW IS POSTNATAL DEPRESSION TREATED? Any mother believing she has postnatal depression should seek advice and support from either their Health Visitor or GP as soon as possible. Postnatal depression can be cured within 6 months. Studies have shown that the most effective form of treatment is a combination of anti-depressant medication (these can be taken safely if breastfeeding) and talking therapies or counselling. Many Health Visitors will offer listening visits on a weekly basis to enable you to discuss your feelings. If not your GP can refer you to a counsellor who specialises in this area. The aim of the talking therapy is to challenge negative thought patterns and enable you to recognise when you are anxious and how to manage these feelings. Talking therapies are very effective and can speed up recovery; it is particularly useful for new mothers and will help you to develop lifelong coping skills. Your Health Visitor and GP will also advice consuming a healthy diet, which includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, protein and wholegrains to ensure your body and immune system is kept healthy. Try to avoid following a strict diet or going without food for long periods as this can make your mood worse.

Myths about Postnatal Depression MYTH 1: MY BABY MIGHT BE TAKEN AWAY FROM ME Why? Many mums have a real fear that if they admit they are not coping then they will be seen as a bad mother and their baby will be taken away from them. Reality: This is not the case at all. Having PND does not mean that you don’t love or care for your baby and your doctor and health visitor will understand this. A mum who asks for help and support is a responsible parent who is showing they want to get better in order to look after their child and your doctor is there to support you and help you find the right treatment to get better. Even if your depression is so severe that you need to get treatment at a mental health clinic there are specialist mother and bay clinics so your baby can be with you.

MYTH 2: EVERYONE WILL THINK I’M FAILING AS A MUM AND WILL JUDGE ME Why? There is a real pressure on mums to be ‘perfect’. Often we are our own harshest critics and find it hard not to compare ourselves to other mums who all seem to be doing a brilliant job and finding motherhood to be a breeze. Reality: There is no such thing as a ‘perfect mum’. We’re all just doing the best we can. Having post natal depression or anxiety does not make you a bad mother. It is not your fault and you are not a ‘failure’.

MYTH 3: NO-ONE ELSE FEELS SUICIDAL Why? You hear the odd horrific story about a new mum who has felt so overwhelmed they’ve committed suicide but you rarely hear or read about regular mums feeling suicidal. If you’re feeling this way it is very easy to feel alone. Reality: Our surveys show that 1 in 5 mums have felt suicidal and many more have had thoughts about harming their baby. Thoughts like these do not mean you are a bad mother and it is very rare for either mother or baby to be harmed. It is vital that you get some support and help so that you can get better.

REAL LIFE “For my last birth, my third, I started having contractions at noon. When I went to the doctor at 6pm, she said I was 1cm and sent me home. At 8:53 we left our house (once our babysitter got there to watch our other kids). I walked into hospital, was brought up to L&D . . . and my water broke in the bathroom. They rushed me to the table and my baby girl was born at 9:14pm, just 21 minutes after leaving our house. No doctor in the room (the nurse caught her). I wasn’t hooked up to any machines. Thankfully, we were all set to deliver at the nearest hospital or else I’d be one of those stories on the news where the mum gives birth in the car.”

Birth Stories

A MOTHER’S DAY REMINISCENCE “ ‘Just one more time’ . . . I begged my husband to let us try this experimental procedure called in-vitro fertilization just one more time. Twenty-three years ago, the number of successful IVF births was measured in the hundreds and the number of babies born using frozen embryos could be counted on one hand. Meet my daughter, Jamie, the product of my ‘one more time’ plea, the fourth baby born in the Delaware Valley by in-vitro fertilization using a frozen embryo. After three ectopic pregnancies, multiple miscarriages and many failed in-vitro attempts, Jamie was not only a medical miracle but a miracle to my husband and me.” - Carrie W.

“Thirteen years ago I found out I was having twins. I am a twin, and I always complained to my poor mum that I had to share everything, even my birthday. Well, my girls had a plan of their own. First they surprised us 11 weeks early, and then when one decided it was time to meet the world, the other decided she liked the newly created space and hung out for another 15 hours. Because of this my girls each have their own birthday. I knew I was a mum because I was so happy about this, regardless of the extra time and pain. And today they have a great birthday story to tell.”

- Colleen G. “After giving birth the nurse came into our room to say I needed to get some rest and she was going to take my daughter so I could sleep. I said, ‘Don’t even think about taking her . . . I’ve waited all my life for this day. I can sleep any other time.’ It was my Christmas day in June.”

- Mapi V.

“I knew the moment I became a mum even before I gave birth to my son. I broke my ankle and had surgery (without being put under) when I was six months pregnant. I was not able to walk till about four to five weeks after I delivered, and the only thing I thought about the whole time was making sure my baby was safe. I then had complications with the pregnancy and had to have an emergency C-section. Once again, I didn’t care what happened to me — I just wanted to make sure my baby boy was going to be OK.”

- Jennifer P.

“With 17 inches of still-falling snow on the ground, we drove to the hospital at 11pm in a low-riding Honda coupe. We had to stop at every intersection to dig it out.” - Una M.

Dont forget about your Children's Teeth this Christmas By My Dentist - Helping the Nation Smile

Remember the catchy Christmas jingle ‘All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth’? As your children dig into selection boxes and festive treats, perhaps there’s a message in this old song that we should be heeding.

W

hilst you might be expecting Santa to visit this month, the tooth fairy could well stop by instead if parents continue to let their children develop bad habits. A recent study revealed that 41% of parents don’t make sure that their children brush their teeth twice a day. At a time when we’re all guilty of letting the diet slip, it’s children who are tempted the most by selection boxes, chocolate coins and advent calendars. Of course, nobody wants to be a Christmas Grinch, but nevertheless you should be making sure their teeth are well protected from the onslaught of sugar.

CHRISTMAS TREATS Terry’s Chocolate Orange - 525 calories, 59.5g sugars Lindt Chocolate Santa - 550 calories, 55g sugars Chocolate Coins - 525 calories, 61.2g sugars Cadbury Snowbites - 480 calories, 68g sugars Mint Matchmakers - 467 calories, 57.5g sugars All figures are based on 100g servings

HEALTH

As November and December roll by in a rush, you may find that your child’s oral health isn’t high on your agenda. In fact, fitting in a trip to the dentist at any time of the year is a big enough struggle for parents. Add Christmas gift shopping and family visits into the mixture and unfortunately you may think you haven’t any time left to take your little ones to the dentist.

More than 41% of parents admitted to us that they would take their child to the dentist more often if they had more time. But, what can you do to stop your hectic Christmas preparations from getting in the way of a vital trip to the dentist?

Children will be children and you can’t always stop them from eating sweet treats. At such an exciting time of year, you don’t want to put a dampener on celebrations with a sweet ban. So how do you protect them? •  Ensure they brush their teeth for two minutes, twice a day. This can be a tricky one to enforce but they’ll get it sooner or later. The good habits you instil now will follow them later in life too. Unfortunately two out of five parents we asked don’t do this. This could cause serious damage as plaque builds up along their teeth and gums. •  If they eat sweets, make sure it’s with a meal and never before bed as they’ll sleep with sugar on their teeth. •  Do try to limit their sugar intake where possible during the festive season. If you know they’re going to visit family who may treat them, avoid chocolate earlier on in the day. Sharon Letters, clinical director at mydentist says:“Remember to brush your child’s teeth

with a fluoride toothpaste, supervise your children and encourage them to spit the toothpaste out and not rinse. How about asking Santa to deliver a nice new toothbrush to help? It’s also an ideal time to schedule a check-up during the Christmas holidays. New Year is a time for resolutions – a great opportunity to make sure your child’s dental health is looked after in 2016.”

Christmas certainly is a time for goodwill and celebrations, and we don’t expect you to police your child’s fun. However, you should be ensuring that they are properly protected from the Christmas treats we all indulge in at this time of year. To learn more about your child’s dental hygiene visit our Kids club page for a detailed guide on dental health for all ages.

PREGNANCY

Hair Loss

AFTER DELIVERY It is normal for women to develop lustrous and thick hair during pregnancy. Most of the time, women will be thrilled with their hair while they are pregnant as the only problem is usually a little bit of dryness that can be easily fixed. After this, the changes to your hair after delivery can be a bit of a shock. It is normal to have hair loss after delivery and it isn’t usually a cause for alarm. The hair loss after labor is usually defined as the sudden loss of hair that mothers go through about three to six months after giving birth. A lot of new mums get a shock when they realize that for a few months after they give birth they are shedding more hair than they normally do. Despite this, it is not a concern and is completely normal. Most of the time, your hair will be normal again by the time your child turns one. The hair loss is due to the process of hair growth. Most of the time somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of your hair will be growing while the rest (5 to 15 percent) keeps the same. Hair then falls out at the end of the resting stage, usually when you are washing it or brushing it out, and new growth will take its place. It is normal for a woman to lose around 100 hairs each day.

Top Tip - Do not shampoo too much. To keep the shedding to a minimum, try to be extra-gentle with your hair. Don’t shampoo your hair more often than necessary and when you do, always opt for a quality conditioner. Try to avoid these treatments until your hair is no longer shedding and this includes straightening, perming, and highlighting. You should also do your best to not use hot styling tools such as flat irons, curling irons, or blow-dryers until after the shedding stops.

40 l NOV/DEC 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

Call the Doctor Let your doctor know if you feel your hair shedding is excessive. In some rare cases, it may indicate postpartum thyroiditis if it goes along with other symptoms. Get enough Vitamins. Make sure that you eat well and get enough vitamins by taking your favorite prenatal vitamin supplement. This will help maintain your hair’s health.

That process changes slightly during pregnancy, however. That is because estrogen levels rise and this increases the length of your hair’s growing stage. This means that fewer of your hairs will be in the resting stage so that less will fall out, leaving you with locks that are thicker and more luxuriant.

After you give birth, your estrogen levels will begin to drop back down to normal and this means that more of your hair follicles will go into the resting stage. That in turn means that you will seem to be losing a lot more hair when brushing or washing your hair. The good news is that this post-pregnancy shedding tapers off and your hair will eventually get back to the thickness it was before your pregnancy. Most of the time, this process will take six to twelve months after you give birth. If you haven’t noticed any dramatic changes with your hair throughout pregnancy or after birth, you are not alone. Not everyone will notice huge changes and it is more common for those with longer hair to notice them.

THE MUSICAL Featuring all the best loved songs of supergroup Abba, Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre is the is still one of the best feel good nights out in London. Set on a sunny Greek island, Mamma Mia! is the story of Sophie who, on the eve of her wedding seeks to try and find the father she has never known by bringing together three men from her mother’s distant past, back to the island they last visited 20 years ago!

When we were invited to see Mamma Mia at the Novell Theatre last week I was super excited. I grew up in an all girls house, singing along to ABBA was just the norm in our house hold. So when this opportunity arose I knew I had to take the girls and pray they enjoed it just as much as I knew I would. Well we weren’t disappointed and what a spectacular show it was, ABBA is such classic there’s no denying that. There were people from ages 5 to 95, and all were singing and dancing. You could’t help but sing along and have a smile from ear to ear.

places but he is at that age...

When we told the girls we were taking them to the theatre Anna (7) and Dionne (9) they were jumping up and down with excitment, but would it really live up to everything they were expecting? It was everything and more than they could have ever dreamed off.The girls absolutley loved it from start to finish they were totally mesmorised and points you found yourself lifting their chins off the floor. Henry (11) on the other hand loved the singing and dancing but did say it was very mushy in

Elaine from Windsor had this to say to us after the show:- This was our second time to this musical & it hasn’t lost any of its charm. Great songs (of course), wonderful performers, simple but enjoyable storyline, funny, & just so uplifting. You really do walk out of the theatre with a big smile on your face singing Dancing Queen! I loved the ‘party’ ending where all of the cast come on stage & the audience stand up & sing & dance along. A fantastic show & not to be missed!

The whole journey home the girls were reliving the songs and resighting the dance moves. It sure is a feel good musical, you leave feeling like you want to just break out into song and dance but realise that in the middle of Victoria station it maybe slightly inappropriate. We got chatting to a lovely couple sat in the row behind us and asked them after the show what they thought of the Musical and how they would rate it. Heres what they had to say:

5 Ways

to Outsmart your Toddler The battle lines were drawn: It was me against him. And my 2-year-old was a formidable opponent. I lay in wait by the stairs, a pair of size-2T sweatpants clutched to my chest. Suddenly, my slippery little boy popped up from behind the relative safety of the sofa. Our eyes met. He squealed and bolted for the kitchen. Game on! Somehow, my master’s degree in psychology had lulled me into the mistaken notion that motherhood would be a piece of cake. I knew the latest child-rearing theories. I’d handle behavior problems with finesse. Ha! Never did I envision how challenging raising a stubborn and feisty toddler would be. Thankfully, I’ve now learned several great toddler-taming strategies that work quite well. Sometimes, I’ve found, you need to shelve the “I am the parent! Do as I say!” approach and try a little creative thinking!

1. ACT LIKE AN IDIOT “Even the most defiant toddler will take pity on us if we seem like total incompetents,” says Harvey Karp, MD, author of The Happiest Toddler on the Block. The trick is to convince your child that you should be helped, not resisted. •  Be forgetful. If she’s refusing to put away her toys, pick up a few and put them in an unexpected place, like the bathtub or a kitchen cabinet. When your child balks — she knows where things belong, even as young as 2 — innocently say, “What? I’m putting your toys in your toy box!” She’ll likely take pity on you and help you put her stuff where it really belongs. •  Be wrong. Next time you foresee a battle to get your toddler into the stroller, try squeezing into it yourself. Chances are good she’ll announce, “That’s mine!” Finally her possessive streak is good for something! •  Be incompetent. Put your coat on backward and place your shoes on your hands. Say, “I’m ready to go, are you?” She’ll laugh, straighten you out, and get her own shoes on for once. Don’t worry, your child won’t really think you’re a fool, says Dr. Karp. This is just a fun tactic, like playing hide-and-seek and pretending you can’t find her.

DEVELOPMENT

2. BECOME A SILVERLINING EXPERT Pretend everything’s great. Your attitude, and the way you handle disappointments (big and small), can greatly affect how your child learns to do the same. Use positive language. The right words can lessen the blow of letdowns and make mundane tasks seem interesting and fun. For instance, the day 3-year-old Josh had been looking forward to going to the playground, it rained. Rather than let him sulk and stomp angrily around the house, his mum Sue said, “This rain is wonderful! Now we get a chance to have that indoor picnic I’ve been planning for you.” Josh was intrigued — an indoor picnic sounded at least as much fun as going to the playground. Turning disappointment into delight is part of the magic of being a parent.

3. TRY REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY You say “yes,” she says “no!” You say “no,” she says “yes!” This verbal tug-of-war is frustrating, but it’s actually a healthy declaration of her growing independence. There’s even an official name for this stage. “When your child doesn’t want to wear certain clothes or taste new foods, it’s called ‘the oppositionalism of toddlerhood,’” says Temple University’s Laurence Steinberg, PhD, author of The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting.

I refused to let her,” says her mum, Julie. But once Julie learned the “Yes, but...” trick, Amanda’s tantrums subsided. Instead of saying no all the time, Julie now says, “Yes, Amanda, you may go outside, but after dinner.” Or “Yes, you may ride your big wheel, but we need to wait for the rain to stop.” Toddlers are a lot more cooperative if they just know when they can do whatever it is they want. The younger your child, the less patience she’ll have to wait. So sidetrack her opposition by offering up another activity with your “Yes, but.” You could say, “Yes, you may have a cookie, but first we’re going to make dinner together.“

5. STAY A STEP AHEAD This is not a quick solution so much as a smart way of thinking. It comes down to consistent routines and reasonable expectations, so you don’t have to be a toddler mind reader. Most toddler battles are caused by hunger, fatigue or frustration, but it’s easier to recognise those things after a tantrum starts — and after a few slices of apple would have saved the day. Keeping your child on an even keel can be relatively simple: Try to make his basic needs — food, sleep — a priority, and not something you squeeze into a busy day. •  Put him down for a nap before he seems super tired. •  Feed him several small meals to keep up his blood sugar (and mood) level. •  Give him plenty of encouragement — he’ll be less inclined to flip out when something goes wrong or he doesn’t get his way. Think twice before you make life unnecessarily hard on him. If you’re thinking of braving the mall with a tired child — don’t. The notion “maybe I can just squeeze in one more errand” has been the downfall of many otherwise rational mums. Of course, if you have a toddler, you’ve already learned that life rarely goes as planned. So, here’s one last trick to try on yourself: Act as if you know what to do — and soon enough, you will!

The solution? If you want your child to do something, like put on her socks, pretend you don’t want her to do it. When I want Kevin, now 3, to get ready quickly, I pretend I’m in a big rush. “Me come, too?” he’ll ask. “No, honey, Mummy’s in a hurry today. Why don’t you stay here with Daddy instead?” My son, who always prefers an adventure to staying home, will dash off to the closet to get his shoes and jacket. When he returns, I say, “I’m not sure you can get ready in time to come with me.” That gets him to start hurriedly shoving his little arms into his jacket sleeves — and then I say, “Wow, you really can get ready quickly!” He beams with pride and allows me to finish zipping him up in record time. Say goodbye to the old captureKevin-and-yank-his-clothes-on-while-pinninghim-to-the-floor maneuver.

4. SAY, “YES, BUT....” Toddler Amanda loved playing outside. She’d press her nose against the screen door and plead to go out. “She’d throw a colossal fit if project-baby.co.uk

DEVELOPMENT

MILK STRIKE!

76 l NOV/DEC 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

Stopped breastfeeding or formula, some toddlers refuse cow’s milk.

DEVELOPMENT

Parents of milk-striking kids can breathe easier knowing their children do not have a condition, just a fussy palate. Taking a child off of breast milk or infant formula can be frustrating for moms, especially when their 1-year-old refuses to drink cow’s milk. “Realizing that it’s not as sweet as breast milk or formula, some children flat out reject cow’s milk,” says Eileen Tyrala, MD, a pediatrician and baby formula specialist at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. “The milk strike,” as some pediatricians call it, can even turn into a lifelong refusal to drink cow’s milk. The problem for a child who stops drinking either milk or formula is the potential for a vitamin D or calcium deficiency. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Both calcium and vitamin D are essential for building strong bones and muscles. Babies and younger children with inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake are at an increased risk for weaker bones and even rickets, says Dr. Tyrala.

WHAT YOU CAN DO There are two ways to solve this problem: coaxing the child into drinking cow’s milk or adding food or drinks to the child’s diet that contain vitamin D and calcium. To get your child to drink cow’s milk: • Mix whole milk with some formula or breast milk. • Add small amounts of strawberry or chocolate flavoring to milk. Dietitian Althea Zanecosky, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, cautions that it may take up to 10 attempts before a young child accepts a new food, including cow’s milk. She also warns not to give too large a serving. Four ounces is the appropriate milk serving for a 1-year-old.

If that does not work, try to substitute the following foods or drinks to gain calcium and vitamin D: • Try switching to almond, coconut, rice or soy milk, all of which have equivalent calcium and vitamin D to cow’s milk. • Try flavored yogurt. • Offer cheese products (cottage cheese, mozzarella string cheese), or add cheese to sandwiches. • Switch to calcium-fortified orange juice, breads and breakfast cereals.

WHY THEY REJECT MILK Why do babies reject cow’s milk in the first place? According to Dr. Tyrala, it comes down to each child’s taste preference. Both breast milk and formula are sweeter than cow’s milk. In addition, neither formula nor breast milk taste anything like cow’s milk, so switching to it is a significant change. The problem has nothing to do with lactose intolerance, as lactose is a sugar that is present.

WHAT TO DO IF MY TODDLER WON’T DRINK MILK Make milk taste better Dairy products which are rich in calcium include yogurt, cheese and ice cream. Milk, low-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt can be used to make tasty milkshakes or fruit

smoothies The traditional example is pouring milk over cereal, but children might enjoy putting food in milk or eating milk dishes such as macaroni and cheese, casseroles or soups. Add milk to other foods During mealtimes or snacks, make milk the drink of choice by offering pure milk or chocolate (or strawberry) milk. Toddlers love to have independence, but you can still direct their decisions. Begin small Begin with 6 ounces of milk for children between 1 to 3 years and 8 ounces of milk for older children. You can even begin with 1 or 2 ounces (or even a sip) at a time if your child is unwilling at first. Don’t give up. Keep offering your child little amounts of milk in hope that they will eventually start enjoying. Offer other dairy products During mealtimes or snacks, make milk the drink of choice by offering pure milk or chocolate (or strawberry) milk. Children enjoy flavored milk more than white milk, but you can control the amount of flavoring and reducing it over time so that they are not getting increased sugar in their diet. Make the serving appealing Milk can be served in a favorite cup, use a fun straw, or try a sports bottle with a pull-up spout. In this manner, the child will enjoy drinking milk as they will concentrate more on the container than the content. Count the calcium from all foods Dairy products contain the well-known amount of calcium. Other foods such as tofu, sardines, some leafy green vegetables and calcium-fortified foods such as fortified orange juice, cereals and other breakfast foods contain this valuable nutrient, too. Stay positive about milk Staying positive is a vital way of making milk a good option for your child. Be a role model by drinking milk yourself on a regular basis (also avoid any negative comments). in all three products, says Tyrala. Parents of milk-striking kids can breathe easier knowing their children do not have a condition, just a fussy palate.

HALO BASSINEST

BABY CUP

Sophie from Barnet said: We have these cups at home and they are perfect size for Charlie’s little hands. Love knowing he isnt just chomping on the teat and he is learning to drink properly

Love co-sleeping? hate having to climb over your partner to get out of bed or shuffle down the bed to get out without waking the baby? You will love the Halo Bassinest, with a little swivel and ta dah your out of bed without waking baby. With the Halo you really get the best of both worlds - you co sleep and have the closeness but can also have your bed for you and still be able to transfer baby easily with the flexi side.

These little tiny cups are perfect for teaching your little one to sip from a cup rather than a beaker. It’s better for their teeth and motor skills. The cups are teeny so you wont be spilling loads of water when he knocks it over for the first time.
