pregnancy

Pregnancy

The irony of pregnancy is that the actual 40 weeks is referred to as “nine months.” This is an especially bitter pill to swallow in the last few weeks, when you may be inclined to remind friends, family and even strangers that, technically, you have been pregnant for 10 whole months. But the reality is that the first few weeks, which doctors count as part of the 40, actually take place before you’re even pregnant. This is the time between the first day of your period and conception, and it’s crucial: Once the egg is fertilized and implants, the embryo transforms at light-speed into a baby. At week five (the third week after conception and the fifth of 40 weeks), the embryo is busy forming its brain, spinal cord, heart and other organs. (This is also the time you may start to throw up.)

Since what goes into your body is crucial to the healthy development of your baby, it’s super important to eat healthy (and follow certain other pieces of health protocol) even before you’re pregnant. These five steps are a great way to start.

1. Hydrate healthily.

Regular exercise also helps to reframe the way you think about the weight gain of pregnancy. Sure, it’s scary to have the shape of your body be completely outside of your control. But it is also really profound. Being pregnant was the first time that I valued my body not for what it looked like, but for what it could do: nurture a life, give birth, breastfeed.

Most pregnant women are thirsty all the time. And there’s a reason for that: Your baby is drinking, too. But she’d probably take a pass on the plastic water bottle. Bottled water costs more than gas and can ring up at £50 a month, and when those bottles get warm, they can leach chemicals from the plastic into the water. With this in mind, it’s better to drink from the tap. Unfortunately, studies show that there are more than 300 pollutants in tap water on average. But luckily, most are easy to filter out with a faucet-mounted or pitcher filter. You can even find portable stainless steel and glass water bottles now that have a filter built in. Genius!

2. Eat less, more often. Try not to panic when you get hungry. Pregnancy hunger is different than regular hunger. First of all, it’s pretty much a constant. But you can ease the feeling with a small amount of food, like a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts. This will be my last point about weight gain, but it’s a serious one: A 2012 study found that obesity may increase a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with autism.

3. Befriend exercise! From prenatal yoga to swimming to walking up a hill, the main thing is to get your heart rate going, keep the blood pumping, give yourself a little boost of energy and well-being.

18 l march/april 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

4. Consistent daily interdental cleaning This should be part of your regular oral care routine in the best of circumstances, but the benefits of flossing are especially important if you are thinking of becoming pregnant or if you are pregnant. Pregnancy is one of several health conditions that make your teeth and gums more vulnerable to plaque buildup and infection. You’re only pregnant for about 9 months, but it’s important to pay special attention to your oral health before, during and after pregnancy.

5. Take it easy.... Scrap the to do lists and pass the list to your partner.

AM I TOO STRESSED

t? n a n g e r P t e G o T That depends. There’s a clear link between stress and a difficulty in conceiving, but that doesn’t necessarily mean stress causes the difficulty. It is true that an inordinate amount of stress can lead to inhibited hormone function and a late or missed period every so often, but most researchers today believe that the main relationship between stress and infertility has to do with all of the side effects that stress can cause, so if you’re feeling stressed, it could be beneficial to address the issues individually. Side effects of stress that could contribute to impaired fertility.

Weigh t Problems

Bad Ha bits

One of the most common side effects of stress is weight problems, of which nutrition and exercise are the two prime factors. People respond to stress differently, so while one may use exercise as relaxation while forgoing meals, another may overeat, and skip out on exercise, losing and gaining weight respectively. Having a BMI that is either too low, or too high can negatively impact fertility, so it’s important to make sure that you’re in, or moving towards a healthy BMI as you try to conceive and prepare for pregnancy.

Having something that helps you relieve your stress is a good thing--for some it’s exercise, or a hobby. Many people however use alcohol or tobacco to help them relieve stress, which can have a serious impact on your fertility. A glass of wine or a beer here and there probably isn’t going to affect your fertility, but it is clear that there is some link between alcohol consumption and impaired fertility, so it’s probably best to avoid binging or consistently heavy drinking when you are trying to conceive.

Poor nutrition on its own can hamper fertility, as your body depends on getting plenty of nutrients like Vitamins A and C to develop healthy eggs, and regulate your hormone cycle. Over-exercise can also contribute to difficulty conceiving, as it can lead to hormonal imbalances, and cycle irregularity.

No t En ou gh Sleep Sleep is another very important factor in your general health, which goes hand-inhand with your fertility. A lack of sleep can negatively impact your fertility, as sleep is the time that your body recharges and prepares for the next day. One such way it does this is with the production of the hormone leptin, a hormone vital for regulating your cycle and ovulation--women who don’t get enough sleep may affect their leptin levels, which could hinder their chances of getting pregnant.

Another common effect of stress is a lack of interest in sex, and as you would imagine, it can be quite difficult to conceive if you aren’t having sex. However, sex is an excellent stress-reducer, as you release hormones that help your body relax, so while you may not be interested in sex when you’re stressed out, it can help in more ways than one when you are trying to conceive.

Breakfast Wake-Up Bars A healthy cereal bar is perfect if you don’t have time for a sit-down breakfast. These bars contain plenty of protein with the addition of nuts and seeds to keep blood-sugar levels stable throughout the morning. The addition of maca powder is a great way to support the adrenal glands if you’re feeling stressed. Oats are high in slow-releasing carbohydrate and rich in soluble fibre to keep you feeling fuller for longer and avoid mid-morning energy dips. They also contain plenty of vitamin E and energizing B-vitamins, as well as beta glucans that support immune health.

Makes: 16 bars Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes

Roasted Banana Caramel Mouse Roasting bananas with their skins on creates a wonderful sweet caramelized flavour. The flesh is puréed with a healthy caramel-style sauce to create a thick mousse. Sweetened only with dates, this makes an irresistible healthy dessert. The pecans can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container. They make a delicious snack. One banana has an impressive 34 per cent of the recommended amount of vitamin B6, which is important for hormone balance, lowering homocysteine.

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 5 minutes, plus 2-4 hours soaking Cooking time: 40 minutes

150g/5½oz/heaped ¾ cup soft pitted dates 2 bananas 2 tbsp almond butter 100ml/3½fl oz/generous ⅓ cup coco-

nut milk 1 tsp vanilla extract Toasted Nuts 50g/1¾ oz/½ cup pecan nuts

1 tbsp maple syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp ground cinnamon a pinch of sea salt

1. To make the toasted nuts, put the pecans in a bowl, cover with water and leave to soak for 2–4 hours, then drain.

4. To make the mousse, put the dates in a bowl, cover with water and leave to soak for 20 minutes, then drain.

2. Put the maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt in a bowl and mix well to combine. Add the drained pecans and toss them with the mixture to coat well.

5. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6. Put the bananas on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, until the skins are black. Leave to cool, then peel away the skins and place the flesh in a food processor or blender.

3. Preheat the oven to 160°C/315°F/Gas 2–3 and line a baking tray with baking parchment. Spread the pecans on the prepared baking tray and bake for 20 minutes until crisp. Leave to cool, then roughly chop.

6. Add the drained dates to the food processor, along with the remaining ingredients and purée to form a thick mousse. Serve topped with the toasted pecans.

Vietnamese Turkey in Lettuce Wraps

This dish is ideal for an energizing lunch or light evening meal and is so quick and simple to prepare. Spoon the spiced turkey into crisp lettuce leaves and drizzle over a little chilli sauce for an extra kick. A high-protein, low-fat food, turkey is also rich in tryptophan and tyrosine which the body converts to serotonin and dopamine chemicals that play a role in the production of babymaking hormones.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 8 minutes 1 tbsp olive oil 200g/7oz minced turkey 1 small red onion, diced 1 tbsp peeled and grated root ginger 1 red chilli, deseeded and diced 1 handful of coriander leaves, chopped 2 tbsp fish sauce juice of 1 lime juice of 1 lemon 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp soy sauce sea salt and ground black pepper 2 Little Gem lettuces, leaves separated, to serve Thai sweet chilli sauce, to serve (optional)

1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok and stir-fry the minced turkey until it begins to turn light brown. Add the onion, ginger and chilli and stir-fry for a further 2–3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the coriander leaves. 2. Combine the fish sauce, lime and lemon juice, honey and

soy sauce in a non-reactive bowl. Pour over the turkey and season with salt and pepper to taste. 3. To serve, spoon the mixture into lettuce leaves and drizzle over a little sweet chilli sauce, if you like.

Q& A

Step Up Your Routine During Pregnancy Keeping Your Oral Health On Top Of Your Mind

Rinsing with an alcohol-free, anti-gingivitis mouthwash is the final step to killing germs and improving your oral hygiene during pregnancy.

As you already know, your lifestyle and habits during pregnancy can affect your health as well as the health of your unborn baby. With all the things you need to be prepared for, your oral health may not exactly be top-ofmind. But maintaining the health of your teeth and gums is necessary to avoid the risk of developing pregnancy gingivitis and to establish good oral health long-term.

Learn About the Medications You’re Taking

Postpone Dental Care During Your First Trimester The first trimester of your pregnancy (the first 13 weeks) is the time in which most of the baby’s major organs develop. If you go to the dentist during your first trimester, tell your dentist that you’re pregnant and have only a checkup and routine cleaning. If possible, postpone any major dental work until after the first trimester. However, if you have a dental emergency, don’t wait! Infections in the mouth can be harmful to you and your baby. See your dentist immediately, and make sure that all dental professionals who examine you are aware you’re pregnant.

Know about increased risk of Gingivitis During pregnancy, 50 to 70 percent of all women experience a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. This is why it’s vital to pay more careful attention to your daily brushing and flossing routine to keep plaque under control. Here’s how:Use a rechargeable electric toothbrush. Many remove more plaque than regular manual toothbrushes, and by investing in one, you can begin to take the steps to reduce the amount of plaque in your mouth and help prevent and reverse gingivitis.Brush with an anti-gingivitis toothpaste. Be sure to read packaging carefully to make sure the toothpaste contains gingivitis-fighting ingredients.Clean interdentally. Even if gingivitis causes your gums to swell and bleed, but you still need to clean areas between the teeth. By doing so daily, you can eliminate more plaque than by brushing alone and help reduce your risk of developing pregnancy gingivitis.Rinse with anti-gingivitis mouthwash.

Some antibiotics and pain medications are okay to take during pregnancy and may be necessary. However, one group of antibiotics, tetracycline and related antibiotics may cause hypoplasia (underdevelopment) of tooth enamel and/ or discoloration of the permanent teeth in children. Be sure to tell your doctor you’re pregnant if he or she prescribes this medication for you.

Be Prepared for Morning Sickness Morning sickness is nausea and vomiting that often occurs during pregnancy. It can happen at any time of day. If you suffer from morning sickness, having your own emergency travel bag is a good plan. In a small, sturdy bag, pack the following:Opaque plastic bags without holes (Plastic grocery bags are a good choice)Wet wipes, tissues or napkins to wipe your face and mouthA small bottle of water to rinse your teeth and mouthA travel-sized mouthwash, toothpaste and toothbrush to brush away stomach acidsBreath spray or mints.

Deal with Changes in Your Mouth During pregnancy, you may experience symptoms of dysgeusia (changing tastebuds or a bad taste in your mouth) or ptyalism (too much saliva). To help cope with a bad taste in your mouth:Brush often, and gargle with a mixture of baking soda and water (1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in one cup of water) to help neutralize pH levelsAdd lemon to water, drink lemonade or suck on citrus dropsUse plastic dinnerware and utensils to help decrease metallic tasteTo help cope with an increase in saliva, drink plenty of fluid to increase swallowing. Sucking on candies may also offer relief.

Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep What can you do to solve your sleep problems during pregnancy? Here are some tried-andtrue suggestions: •  Avoid caffeine (in all its forms, so put that chocolate bar    down) after noon. •  Get your eight glasses of water (or other fluids), but taper    off at night.

knuma 4-in-1 Highchair

•  Drink if you’re thirsty, but don’t down a 16-ounce water    bottle right before bedtime. •  Exercise regularly - during the day or early evening. A    daily workout will help you sleep better, but if it comes too    close to bedtime, it could actually sabotage sleep (exercise   is energising). •  Have a light snack before hitting the hay to stave off    midnight hunger pangs. Include protein and a complex    carb (think cheese and a whole-grain muffin), as well    as some warm milk (it really works!) or decaffeinated    tea. Besides the duh (avoid caffeine, again in all its    forms - sorry, no chocolate with the warm milk), stay    away from sugar, which will give you an energy boost    when you least want one, and then leave your blood    sugar levels wobbly during the night (yet another strike   against chocolate). •  Take a warm bath just before bed. The soothing and    relaxing effects of the bath should help you summon the   sandman sooner. •  Crack a window - as long as the weather’s comfortable    (which for a pregnant woman means anything from 65    degrees on down-way down). The fresh air can be    soporific. If the weather’s not cooperative, keep the room    comfortably (for you, not your spouse) chilled. Remember,    your heat’s up, the thermostat’s should be down. •  Make love, if you’re in the mood. Or at least ask your man    for a massage - both of which can relax you. •  Try some relaxation exercises - visualisation, deep    breathing, meditation, or even yoga or chanting before    hitting the sack. And actually, counting sheep can work    the same way - the monotony of watching those little    guys jump over the fence can be truly relaxing (unless you    associate them with insomnia). •  Leave a night-light on in the bathroom - switching on the    overhead is way too much of a wakeup call and will make    it much harder to fall back asleep.

Financial

Niggles By Holly Mackay, Founder and MD of Boring Money

One Mum’s simple tips to sort out those financial niggles Lots of us with small children at home worry about sorting out our financial affairs. Our recent research tells us that 27% of Tired Parents say that they worry about their finances but do not know what to do, 14% are usually “too tired to think about anything financial” and 15% “put their head in the sand”. Sound familiar? But don’t panic. If you can fit a stairgate on three hours’ sleep, making some simple changes to your financial life is child’s play in comparison. There are three things which lots of parents

tell me are on their ‘to do’ list. Sorting out a will, checking your life insurance and if possible, saving for your child’s future. Our guides will help you sort these out in super quick time and we’ll share who we rate and why.

Wills - I know Mums are superheroes but I’m afraid we are still mortal… Wills are not the most uplifting of subjects but they are super important. The law is still a bit mediaeval and if you are not married or separated, it’s not a good idea to leave your legacy to some bureaucrat in a suit. If you are unmarried, for example, your children will typically inherit and not your partner, which can make paying the mortgage a nightmare, or impossible. project-baby.co.uk

But don’t panic. If you can fit a stairgate on three hours’ sleep, making some simple changes to your financial life is child’s play in comparison. There are three things which lots of parents tell me are on their ‘to do’ list. Sorting out a will, checking your life insurance and if possible, saving for your child’s future. Our guides will help you sort these out in super quick time and we’ll share who we rate and why.

Life insurance how to make your partner look much more attractive! Next up – life insurance. This one is a biggie. Check out if you or your partner have this though work. If not, you’ll need some private provision. This is really fundamental for parents to make sure that your nippers are not left in the financial lurch in the event of some awful accident. Here’s a shocking fact. 44% of all British pet owners insure them. But just 40% of us have life insurance. So we look after Rex more than our other halves! Some people tell me that the cost puts them off. What might you expect to pay? A healthy 40-something who hasn’t hit the fags since Take That were No. 1 should expect to pay a little under £10 a month for £100,000 of life cover. Most money comparison sites will get you a quote in less than 10 minutes. Or we tip AIG who offer decent cover at an OK price with an immediate decision – details are on our website.

Time and convenience are major headaches

for most parents and top of the excuses list. Who wants to drag a baby to sit in a stuffy solicitor’s office and persuade Junior not to shout or bring up his milk on the boardroom table! #nightmare However there are simple, free options where you can do an online will in super quick time. If you are nervous about making a mistake, there are low-cost online solicitor-provided will services where a legal eagle will cast their eye over things to make sure you haven’t made a howler. Irwin Mitchell have this service which starts from about £145 +VAT.

And (as if you weren’t doing enough for themal ready),children’s savings options?

“But the stock market just feels so grown-up!” That’s what one Mum said to me and she is not alone. Almost 3 out of every 4 of all Junior ISAs are in cash. But if you are saving for 10 years, a Barclays study shows that you are a whopping 91% more likely to better in shares than in cash. And this leaps to 99% over 18 years. The uncertainty of the stock market does worry people. And we parents are biologically programmed to avoid risk when it comes to our kids. However I choose to save into stocks & shares Junior ISAs for my children, in the belief that they will do better in the long run. Even the fusty old finance industry isn’t immune to the digital changes going on in the world. There are more and more helpful online sites which will offer up ‘ready meals’ of investments if you haven’t the foggiest what to pick. I like Fidelity for stocks & shares Junior ISAs or download our free Junior ISA Guide for more tips and suggestions.

And it’s amazing how much more attractive your partner looks when you know they’re worth £100,000! Once you have ticked off wills and life insurance that leaves children’s savings to think about. If you’re like me, you will have spent a small fortune with John Lewis, Mothercare and McLaren, leaving little spare change at the end of each month! However it is worth considering children’s savings accounts (typically with banks) or a Junior ISA.

the

5 step weaning plan Step 1

Step 3

Giving your baby a taste for veg – it might be a challenge, and it proably won’t be love at first bite, but keep going and they’ll learn to love veggies for life.

It’s time to start mixing things up! New food groups and new combinations will make sure your little one is getting a real balance.

Start with single savoury flavours and try to avoid sweeter veggies by sticking to things like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and peas.

Step 2 Now your baby is enjoying their first veggies, it’s full steam ahead to step 2 – introducing a whole world of new tastes and textures! Offering your little one a wide range of veg when they’re small makes them more likely to eat their veg as they grow. Now they’re successfully munching on savoury food, you can carry on offering them single veg and begin to tempt them with some fruity flavours too! Try offering them little and often throughout the day.

38 l march/april 2017 l

Try to add iron, from red meat, beans and green leafy veg to support normal cognitive development and also dairy which is a source of calcium which supports normal bone development. Meat, fish, beans and eggs are good sources of protein, which is needed for normal growth and development of bone, and starchy carbohydrates like rice and potatoes provide energy and B vitamins.

Step 4 Set the meal times. Your little one should be starting to eat more of what you offer, more frequently now, and a baby-friendly brekkie is the perfect way to introduce them to a mealtime routine. Because your little one is raring to go in the morning, breakfast is the perfect time to try something new. Although they shouldn’t be eating family breakfast cereals because of the added sugar and salt, baby cereals provide the perfect texture with no added nasties.

Award Winning Babycup Promoting Dental Health in Babies

Step 5 Congratulations – you’ve reached the final stage of our 5 step weaning plan! Your baby’s come a long way from their first spoonfuls, and now they’re ready to start enjoying 3 regular meals a day. Establishing a routine will help your mini muncher enjoy new flavours and textures – the beginning of a lifetime of healthy eating habits. By the end of this step, you’ll have given your baby an adventurous attitude towards food, and an eating routine that helps them understand the world around them. Try to eat together as much as possible so that your little one learns that mealtimes are sociable and fun.

DO •  Give lots of smiles – if you’re happy, your baby’s happy! •  Begin weaning at home, or somewhere they know well •  Make sure there aren’t too many distractions •  Let them play with their food and/or spoon •  Keep trying – it can take 8-10 tries for your baby to like a new flavour

introducing the babycup Babycup is a British brand working hard to bring healthy little cups to every highchair.

DON’T •  Attempt weaning before 17 weeks* •  Leave your baby alone when feeding •  Pick a time when your baby’s too tired, too full – or too hungry! •  Add salt or sugar to foods •  Offer sweet tastes, like fruit, too early as it’ll make it harder for them to learn to love vegetables

Created by mum of three Sara Keel, Babycup Baby & oddler First Cups are “Little cups for little people” that support oral and dental health and encourage sipping - proven to be best for orthodontic development and fine motor skills. Lightweight, translucent and just the right size for little hands, the mini open cups are designed for weaning onwards but are also suitable for cup-feeding infants to help establish breastfeeding or support latch problems. food & drink

Top Tips Have fun and play with food: Encourage your baby to experiment – to mash, lick, squash and squeeze, to examine, to play, to try and to taste their food and its flavours. Don’t give up – try, try and try again! It can take up to 14 attempts before a baby learns to like a new food, especially the more challenging ones, so don’t worry if your little one grimaces or refuses certain foods at first.

Let your baby decide when they’ve had enough, rather than encouraging them to clear their plates. You can offer an extra course of a yogurt or fruit-based pudding to get in a greater range of foods and nutrients.

Shopping List for vegtable led weaning Frozen Peas Cauliflower florets 1 medium carrot 1 pack of baby rice 1 small broccoli

Start out slowly, preparing a tablespoon sized portion of whatever food you have chosen to begin with. Some parents begin offering their babies solid foods by using their (clean and washed) finger as a spoon. They say that this helps their babies take to solid foods because the “new” spoon and the “new” food all at once seem to confuse baby.

Shopping list with fruit and veg with more texture 1 eating apple 1 pear 1 bag spinach parsnips

100g broccoli florets Your baby’s usual milk or cooled, boiled water

METHOD Wash broccoli and steam for 8−10 mins until soft. Cool slightly, and add 2−3 tbsp of the water or milk. Blend with food processor or hand blender until runny and smooth. If you need to, add more liquid. .

Mind the

Gap

The truth is, there is no right age gap for your family – whatever age gap you end up with, you will find ways of making it work. When trying to decide on an age gap, you will probably find yourself weighing up the pros and cons of each possible scenario, and struggling to decide which one sounds right for you. The thought of adding a new child to the family can sound scary, especially as you worry about how your first child will react. You may feel concerned that you no longer have the energy to run around after a toddler, or that you couldn’t cope with (even more) sleepless nights. A common concern for singleton parents, is whether they will be able to love a second child as much (you will).

The Older Child Will Understand

For those of you toying with the idea of the idea of a longer age gap between your children – anything from three years and up – here are some reasons why this is an awesome choice.

An older child will be able to help out with the new baby, and this will be a great opportunity for them to build a strong bond with each other. From running upstairs to grab a clean nappy, to soothing the baby

42 l march/april 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

Your first child is a little older, and may be mature enough to better understand the concept of the new baby. An older child is less likely to feel left out after the arrival of a new sibling. An older child will be better placed to understand the needs of the new baby, and to react with compassion and empathy.

An Older Child Can Get Involved

during long car journeys, your first child will have an active role to play in caring for your new child. Older children who read can make great little story tellers, which is a great thing for both siblings!

Your Older Child Will Be More Independent With a longer age gap, your first child will be more independent. You won’t need to worry about changing two dirty bottoms throughout the day, because your first child will be able to use the toilet. He may also be able to get himself snacks, and play independently for limited amounts of time.

real life

Your Older Child Will Be More Attached The longer a child remains an only child, the better attached he is to his parents. So the longer you wait before having a second baby, the longer your first child will have to develop a strong attachment to you. Each family situation is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all perfect age gap. You must consider the individual needs of yourself, your partner and your existing children when deciding on when to have your next child. It’s also important to remember, that these things may not always be in our control. It could take longer than expected to conceive.

The Younger Child Will Get Quality Time Too

They Won’t Fight Over The Same Toys With a larger age gap, your children will have different interests and will play with different toys. This may save you the hassle of acting as mediator, desperately negotiating turns with the most popular toys.

It Will Spread Out The Cost Of Childcare Childcare isn’t cheap, and having two children close together can leave some families struggling to afford to pay their nursery bills each month. Two children attending university at the same time can also put a strain on the family purse. By having a larger age gap, you can spread out the costs associated with raising children, especially during those early (and expensive) years.

You Won’t Have To Double Up

Think back to those hazy days when your first child was born. Those long lunches with mum and baby friends, and the long afternoons spent cuddling and feeding on the sofa. A longer age gap will allow you to give the second child the same treatment, though you may have school runs to fit in. Whilst your older child is at school, you will have time for some one-to-one bonding with the newest member of your family.

You Will Have Caught Up On Sleep Unlike the parents of two under two, you will have caught up on your sleep by the time your next baby arrives. Your first child will be sleeping better, and you should be able to get enough rest during pregnancy. Once the baby arrives, chances are it will only be the newborn keeping you up at night, so you won’t be running between bedrooms trying to soothe everyone.

Your first child will already have outgrown his infant car seats, buggy and playmat. You won’t need to fork out on doubling up on these items, and will instead simply be able to dust off the cobwebs and use them again.

Sibling Rivalry Is Less Likely Childcare Children born closer together in age are more likely to experience sibling rivalry. With a larger age gap, your children have different interests, and different focuses at anytime and are less likely to compete over things. An older child may see themselves as a mentor for the younger sibling, rather than as a competitor.

Inspired by the author’s own experience, The Good Guy is a story of marriage, selfdeception and the pressure to conform in Sixties suburban New England. Set during a time when America was on the cusp of a sexual revolution, the novel examines life under scrutiny in the ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ era. Ted, a car-tyre salesman in 1960s suburban New England, is a dreamer who craves admiration. His wife, Abigail, longs for a life of the mind. Single-girl Penny just wants to be loved. When a chance encounter brings Ted and Penny together, he becomes enamoured and begins inventing a whole new life with her at its centre. But when this fantasy collides with reality, the fallout threatens everything, and everyone, he holds dear. The Good Guy is a deeply compelling debut about love, marriage and what happens when good intentions and self-deception are taken to extremes.

The Versions of Us - Laura Barnett Similar to the film Sliding Doors, this novel explores the small moments when our lives could have turned out entirely differently. A love story told three ways, the novel - set in 1958 - follows Cambridge students Eva and Jim, and Eva’s lover, David.

A luxury family retreat overlooking the Fowey Estuary, it’s believed that the majestic Fowey Hall inspired Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows. Author Kenneth Grahame was certainly a frequent visitor to this former family mansion, and it’s the perfect location for messing about on the river like Ratty and his friends. Once you’ve slung your fishing nets in the lobby and been greeted by Bramble the hotel dog, make yourself at home and enjoy the seamless fusion of luxury and family time. Despite the hotel’s grandeur and elegance, the patter of little feet is welcomed throughout – and the crèche, play areas, zip wire and games room ensure there’s plenty of child-friendly activity. However this is a sanctuary for grown-ups too, with opulent bedrooms, peaceful alcoves by roaring fires, spa treatments on tap and sumptuous Cornish cuisine served in the fine-dining restaurant. foweyhallhotel.co.uk

Keeping our children safe

The health and happiness of children in our care is of vital importance to us and we always do our best to keep them safe. However, every year, around 2 million children attend A&E due to accidents. Over 76,000 of these require admission to hospital. That’s nearly 1500 children a week!

l march/april 2017 l 65

real life

The six most common childhood accidents are:

1. Falls 2. Burns 3. Choking 4. Suffocation/Strangulation 5. Poisoning 6. Drowning wound. There are simple safety precautions that all households can easily adopt to minimise the risk of children having accidents.

•  Run cold water into the bath first to stop the    bottom overheating. Use a bath    thermometer as well as checking the    temperature yourself before bathing babies.    Ideally fit a thermostat or temperature    regulator to bath taps. •  Keep hot drinks out of reach, use a kettle    with a short flex and keep it at the back of    the work surface. •  Don’t drink hot drinks while holding a baby    and never pass hot drinks over anyone’s    head. A drink that has been sitting for 15    minutes can still be hot enough to burn a baby. •  Use the back rings of the cooker, turn pan    handles away from the edge. •  Fit fireguards and radiator guards, turn off    heated towel rails. •  Be very careful of irons, hair straighteners    and other hot implements and keep them    and their flexes well out of reach. Remember    they stay hot for a long time after use.

Preventing Choking

Preventing Falls •  Never leave a baby in a bouncy chair or car    seat on a raised surface. •  Strap babies into highchairs and buggies. •  Always hold onto the banister when    carrying your baby up and downstairs. •  Fit safety gates to your stairs before your    baby starts crawling and ensure you keep    stairs clear from clutter. •  Teach your baby to come down the stairs   backwards. •  Fit safety locks to windows. •  Never leave chairs, large plant pots or    furniture near windows, work surfaces,    balconies or anywhere dangerous a baby or    child could climb onto. •  Secure furniture - particularly bookcases,    chest of drawers and TVs - to the wall to    prevent them toppling and crushing a child    if they try to climb up them. •  Bunk beds are not recommended for    children under 6.

Preventing Burns •  Microwaves cook unevenly. Get rid of hot    spots when heating bottles or food by    shaking or stirring thoroughly. Test the    temperature before giving food to children or    feeding a baby. •  Don’t place a cot by a radiator.

66 l march/april 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

Babies and young children can choke on anything small enough to fit through a loo roll. To prevent choking: •  Keep small objects and all batteries out of   reach. •  Cut food into small pieces. •  Supervise children while they’re eating,    especially if they’re under five. •  Discourage older children from sharing their    food with babies.

www.FirstAidforLife.org.uk and www.onlinefirstaid.com provide this information for guidance and it is not in any way a substitute for medical advice. First Aid for Life is not responsible or liable for any diagnosis made or actions taken based on this information. The best way to be prepared for action in an emergency is to attend a practical first aid course or do one of our online courses – there is a free first aid for choking course accessible from onlinefirstaid.com.

Strangulation •  Do not use duvets and pillows for babies    under 12 months. •  Keep nappy sacks and small objects well    away from babies. If they grab them they    can easily suffocate as they don’t have the    dexterity to remove them from their faces. •  Keep pets away from small babies and    never leave a pet unattended with a child. •  Never hang drawstring bags on cots, avoid    cot bumpers which tie around the cot and    use blind cord clips or alternatively choose a   cordless blind. •  Keep plastic bags and packaging out of    reach and dispose of them carefully. •  Never put necklaces or dummies round a   baby’s neck.

Preventing Poisoning Some common household chemicals are incredibly toxic to children and can cause seizures, vomiting, blurred vision, acute anaphylaxis and can be fatal. •  Keep all potentially harmful substances    out of reach of small children and ideally in    a locked cupboard. This includes dishwasher    tablets, medicines, alcohol, cosmetics, DIY    supplies, cleaning and gardening products    and potentially poisonous plants. •  Never decant medication or any other    products into different containers. Always    use the original containers, clearly labelled,    ideally with childproof lids. •  Keep batteries out of reach of small children    and ensure that batteries in their toys are    firmly secured. Batteries can burn a child’s    intestine, causing irreparable damage. •  Fit carbon monoxide alarms and have    appliances and alarms regularly checked. •  Tidy up straight after a party as little ones are    likely to be the first up and could easily finish    the dregs of drinks and help themselves to    anything else before you’re even awake. •  Be careful of other people’s handbags left    accessible to children as they could have    numerous potentially lethal hazards inside. •  Choose cleaning products containing Bitrex    which is bitter to discourage children from    drinking the substances. Children can easily    mistake a dishwasher or washing machine    capsule/tablet for a sweet – keep them out    of site and don’t be tempted to leave them    in the door of the machine. Cleaning    products are strong alkali and burn. •  Don’t let children eat any plants in the    house, garden or countryside. •  Store medication carefully, be particularly    careful with birth control pills and    analgesics that are commonly kept on the   bedside cabinet.

Telling your toddler that your pregnant When, what, and how much to tell your child about the new baby

74 l march/april 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

real life Being pregnant the second time around seemed utterly unremarkable to me. With a been-there-done-that mentality, I knew what to expect for the most part -- except for one wild card: my first son, Ben. Although my husband and I were excited to expand our family and give Ben a sidekick, we weren’t so certain that he would be equally as enthused. And so, instead of spending hours poring over photos comparing the baby in my belly to the size of a kidney bean or a cantaloupe, I spent my time pondering how to tell our 20-month-old, Ben, that we loved him so much, we wanted to give him a bawling baby brother who would steal his parents’ attention in the near-term and grow up to steal his toys. Needless to say, I was flummoxed. If you’re planning to welcome a new sibling to the family, read on for expert advice on when, what, and how much to tell your older child(ren) about the new baby, both before and after the birth.

When to Break the News Not surprisingly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Beyond counseling expectant parents to wait until safely through the first trimester, Elaine Sweaney, who teaches sibling education classes at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, said that much depends on the age and maturity of the older sibling-to-be. “Young children have a very abstract idea of time, and if you tell them really early, they won’t get it,” says Sweaney. Also, little kids might blab the news before you’re ready to share it with the world at large. But, “you know your child best,” sasys Janeen Hayward, founder of Swellbeing, a parenting resource service, who advocates informing kids early on -- and definitely before parents start telling other people. “Even young children are quite perceptive, and not knowing what’s going on with Mommy could make kids feel anxious,” so trust yourself to make the right call on when to tell your child. Whenever you do share the news, she recommends pairing your due date with a recognizable milestone. For example: The baby will be born at the end of summer, or around Halloween, etc.

What to Say “Keep it short and sweet. There doesn’t need to be a long explanation,” says Hayward. “You can say something like, ‘Mommy and Daddy have decided to have another baby. My belly will get bigger and bigger until the baby is born.’” Hayward adds that parents should follow the child’s lead. “Some are naturally much more curious about it -- but they don’t always want the long-winded answer that we think they want,” she says. “Older children will generally want to know more.” Sweaney adds: “Don’t want to give more information than they’re asking for. The scary question for parents often is ‘How did the baby get in there?’ But you don’t necessarily need to get into the birds and the bees -- they’re wondering ‘Did Mommy swallow something?’” Avoiding Assumptions You might be surprised by how your child feels about becoming an older sibling. Think she’ll be delighted by getting a real, live baby doll to dress up? Sure he’ll be devastated by having to share his parents’ attention at the dinner table? “Parents shouldn’t assume any specific reaction -- positive or negative,” says Hayward. “In fact, it is often a mixed bag of feelings that children and adults have in relation to the arrival of a new baby into the family. With the new addition there is always a loss of the family the way it was before. The ‘Three Amigos’ now have a fourth member! It is important to acknowledge the

feeling of loss and the accompanying sadness, as well as any others feelings that may come. On any given day it would be perfectly normal for kids to have feelings on both ends of the extreme.”

Moving to a New Bed or Room For many families, having another baby may mean a move for the older sibling. If you’ll need the crib or room your older child is sleeping in for the new baby, try to avoid making the transition too close to your due date, to avoid any related feelings of resentment toward the baby. What if your older child still needs the crib? If investing in another one isn’t possible, Hayward suggests trying to make other sleeping arrangements for baby (for example, borrowing a crib, or using a bassinet or Moses basket for the first few months) to avoid prematurely moving big bro out of his crib. Moving a toddler too soon could invite additional problems -- think middle-of-the-night roaming coupled with a spotty-at-best newborn sleep schedule. If your child will need to move into a new room, Hayward and Sweaney both suggest making the change a few months prior to baby’s arrival, but certainly by the eighth month. If that’s not possible, consider waiting a few months following baby’s arrival to make the change.

You Were a Baby Once, Too For children with little experience with babies, it’s easy to view that sweet new bundle as a little attention-stealing monster. Help prepare your older child for the crying and commotion by explaining, “This is what babies do: they cry a lot, they eat a lot, and they sleep a lot. It’s Mommy and Daddy’s job to figure out why babies cry -- maybe he’s wet, maybe he’s hungry...” says Hayward. To help your child relate to his new baby sibling, Hayward and Sweaney suggest digging out his baby books. Suggests Hayward, “Page through very slowly, gush over each picture. ‘Here we are at the hospital right after you were born. Look at how happy Mommy was!’ Keep drawing those parallels. Reminisce and tell stories about when your older child was a baby.”

Gift Exchange Dr. Greene recommends having your older child select a present to give to the new baby upon their initial meeting. “Parents can help the older sibling make a little book or a picture frame to hold a photo of the two of them that will go in the baby’s room,” says Hayward. “Additionally, when the child meets the baby it’s nice to have a little something from the baby to the older sibling as well.”
