SO WHY PREGNANCY COLLAGEN?

There has been an increasing use of collagen in pregnancy. We could call it a superfood because of the wonderful effects it has on health and even on chronic illness. It has received much focus as a skincare product so unfortunately many people do not understand its multiple benefits.

SO WHAT IS IT ?

Collagen is a type of protein that is found in over 70% of our body’s structure and has been described as the glue that holds everything together. It provides the elasticity to our skin and matrix to our bones an cartilage. Its also the highest element found in the skin of our gut lining.

In summary

Its benefits are far more than just for skin – It strengthens us from the inside!!! Collagen can be found in dietary sources such as fish, chicken, eggs, berries, beans, okra, broccoli and tomatoes. You can also try other supplements such as bone broth which many women take for healing after pregnancy. Some women may benefit from collagen supplements particularly when their dietary intake is low due to nausea or acid reflux symptoms.

Not all collagens supplements are equal and capsules just don’t contain enough to have the full benefits. The best collagens are high-grade peptides which are made to be more easily absorbed than collagen from food substances. Ideally this should be combined with a vitamin C to aid absorption into the body.

TODDLER FACTS Fun 3

They have more brain connections than adults do

From birth to three years of age, a child’s brain is developing at a rate faster than any other time of their life. In fact, according to , by the time they are three years old, a child has formed 1000 trillion brain connections –This is twice as many as adults have.

A toddler’s stomach is very small usually only the size of a small fist. So don’t get stressed when they won’t eat, chances are they really aren’t hungry.

OLD WIVES’ TALES FOR PREDICTING GENDER

“So, are you having a boy or a girl?” Every pregnant woman has been asked this questionseveral times. Even if you’re choosing to not find out the sex of your baby before your little one arrives, it sure is fun to guess, right? That’s why we’ve put together this list of old wives’ tales for predicting the gender. (Remember: There’s no actual science backing up any of these. Plus, the only thing gender tells us is what genitals our kids have, not how they will eventually identify. So it’s really just for fun!)

1. SWEET VERSUS SALTY CRAVINGS

If you find yourself craving all things sweet, that’s a sign you’re having a girl. Cravings for salty or even protein-rich foods mean it might be a boy. (And if you’re craving everything? Well, that just means you’re pregnant.)

2. THE GARLIC TEST

Put this one to the test at your own—and your partner’s—risk! If you’re able to eat a lot of garlic but not smell like it, apparently that means you’re carrying a girl.

3. MORNING SICKNESS

Unfortunately, this early pregnancy symptom doesn’t tend to discriminate. But if you’re suffering from excessive nausea and morning sickness, it’s said you could be having a girl.

4. PREGNANCY GLOW, OR NO

If your complexion is bright and your hair resembles that of a Pantene commercial, you could be having a boy. If that much-talkedabout “pregnancy glow” is MIA and you’re breaking out, it may just mean you’ve got a girl growing. (It’s said little girls steal Mum’s good looks.)

5. PARTNER’S WEIGHT GAIN

As this old wives’ tale goes, if your partner is gaining weight alongside you (also known as “sympathy weight”), that could be a sign that you’re carrying a girl. (Who wants to go to the gym when there’s nesting to be done?)

Trying to predict your baby’s gender? From Chinese Gender charts to decoding your cravings, these old wives tales reveal if you’re having a boy or a girl.
PREGNANCY

6. MOODY VERSUS MELLOW

If you’re feeling more moody than mellow, you might be having a girl. If you’re more chilled out, legend has it you should get ready for a boy.

7. THE EYE TEST

Look in the mirror for about a minute. If your pupils are dilating, it means you’re having a boy.

8. CARRYING HIGH VERSUS LOW

According to pregnancy lore, carrying high means you’re having a girl, while carrying low means it’s a boy.

9. THE RING TEST

Tie a ring on a string and hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circular motion, you could be having a girl, but if it’s swinging side to side, it means you’re having a boy.

10. HEART RATE

During your next ultrasound, pay attention to baby’s heart rate. If that little ticker is beating faster than 140 beats per minute, get ready for a girl.

11. CHINESE GENDER CHART

Place one finger on the age you were when you conceived and another finger on the month of conception. Where your fingers meet in the middle will tell you if you’re expecting a little boy or girl. Are you ready to try this fun chart out? Check out our website for the chart.

12. BLOOD PRESSURE BEFORE YOU CONCEIVE

This one is a little more tricky to do. A study found that the higher a woman’s blood pressure is 26 weeks before she conceived, the more likely she is to have a boy. So if you had a doctor’s appointment before you started trying to get pregnant, look back and see what your blood pressure was—it could be the very scientific clue to whether you’re having a little dude or dudette.

So, based on these old wives’ tales, do you think you’re having a boy or a girl?

Ramzi’s Ultrasound Method

The Ramzi ultrasound method claims that you can determine fetal sex based on the side of the uterus the placenta lies on.

If the placenta is on the left, the method claims it means the fetus is female. If it’s on the right, it supposedly means male.

Things 8

If you’re expecting your first baby, there’s a good chance you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information coming at you about ‘getting prepared’ for the birth, bringing baby home and all the challenges that this crazy thing called parenthood may throw your way.

Oh, and you’re probably sick of being told to ‘sleep while you still can!’. (What Is it with everyone’s need to fill first-time expectant parents with fear about sleep deprivation?)

Over on Instagram, we have a wonderful community of parents with an honest and supportive approach to sharing pregnancy, birth and parenting advice. And we recently asked our followers a question: if you could go back to when you were expecting your first baby and give yourself some advice, what would it be?

Here’s what the fabulous Pattie & Co. parents told us.

1. EVERYTHING IS A PHASE, AND EVERY PHASE PASSES

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that babies are masters of the curveball: the minute we think we’ve successfully navigated one challenge, along comes a new one to test us!

The good news is, pretty much every tricky stage we go through with babies is just a phase. These phases do eventually pass, and we do eventually come out the other side. It can be hard to call this mantra to mind when you’re in the thick of cluster feeding, teething or a sleep regression, but if you can, dig deep and repeat ‘this too shall pass’ to yourself a few times. It really does help.

2. BREASTFEEDING ISN’T EASY. IT CAN TAKE A WHILE TO GET INTO THE SWING OF IT.

This was a common theme among the answers we received. When I was pregnant, I felt like all the information I was given about breastfeeding made it sound like something that just magically happens: baby is born, independently finds their way to the boob, latches on like they’ve been doing it forever and feeds beautifully.

project-baby.co.uk l NOV-DEC 2022 l 21
WE WISH WE’D KNOWN BEFORE HAVING A BABY
PREGNANCY

While this might be the case for some, it certainly wasn’t my experience. And having since had this conversation with lots of other mums, it seems it’s not the experience for many of us.

If you’re thinking you’d like to give breastfeeding a go, it’s worth knowing that it’s often something that takes time and perseverance. You and baby are both learning – it’s something neither of you have ever done before, after all! If it doesn’t go smoothly from day one, don’t panic. Go easy on yourself, seek advice and support from experts if you’d like some (this NHS guide is a great place to start) and just take it one day at a time.

3. YOUR BABY IS THEIR OWN PERSON. THEY DON’T FOLLOW A MANUAL, SO JUST GET TO KNOW YOUR LITTLE ONE AND GO WITH IT.

A big thank you to Claire Milligan for this golden nugget of advice. It really resonated with me, because when my son was a baby I became so acutely aware that he was sleeping less and feeding more than the books said he should, it drove me to distraction. I felt like I was doing everything wrong and I was constantly battling to get him to do things differently. I wish I’d had the confidence to just tune into him and my instincts and trust them to tell me what he needed.

As a new parent, it’s easy to get drawn into ‘comparisonitis’ and worry that your baby isn’t following the same path as others or doing what the books say. But remember every baby is different, and the ‘right’ way is the way that works for them and for you.

And, whatever you do, avoid the temptation to fall down an internet rabbit hole with every little question or concern (I speak from experience here!). If you do have any worries at all about your baby’s development, make your GP or health visitor your first port of call, not Dr Google!

4. IT’S OKAY TO SAY NO TO YOUR IN-LAWS VISITING ON THE DAY YOU COME HOME FROM HOSPITAL

Or anyone else, for that matter! And this doesn’t just apply to the day you come home – during those first days and weeks you have absolute power of veto over all visitors and arrangements.

It’s natural to want to show your baby off and introduce them to the special people in your life, and if you feel ready it can be wonderful to have a house full of loved ones admiring your baby. But if at any point you don’t feel up to it, don’t be afraid to say so and call off any planned visits. Most people will absolutely understand how you’re feeling – especially if they’ve been parents themselves – and will have no problem rescheduling.

Another top tip is to prioritise visits from the people you know will be helpful and bring food, shopping or generally do something useful while they’re with you (like putting the vacuum round or cuddling your baby while you have a shower). If you suspect anyone will linger for hours and expect a constant supply of tea and biscuits, their invitation can wait!

5. YOU MIGHT SWEAT A LOT AT NIGHT AFTER GIVING BIRTH

Kelly, a mum of one from Devon, told us that postpartum night sweats came as a huge shock to her:

“In the weeks after having my little girl I experienced postpartum night sweats. And when I say sweats, I mean SWEATS. I had no idea it was even a thing and was totally unprepared for it! After speaking to my GP and other mums I soon realised it’s totally normal and very common. So don’t be alarmed if this happens to you!”

6. YOU WON’T ENJOY ALL OF IT. THAT’S OKAY AND VERY, VERY NORMAL.

There needs to be so much normalisation of this sentiment. Popular culture is overwhelmingly biased towards the narrative that having a new baby is a blissful time in our lives. And yes, lots of it IS amazing. But let’s be honest, the path to parenthood is far from easy – whether you’ve carried your baby for nine months and given birth, watched someone you love give birth or finally adopted your child after a lengthy application process or surrogacy journey.

By the time your little one makes their entrance, you’re likely to be feeling physically drained, emotionally overwhelmed and/or completely exhausted. And now you have full responsibility for this tiny, demanding human! Looking after a newborn is hard work and pretty monotonous at times, and it isn’t all enjoyable. New parents often feel guilty for thinking and feeling this, but it’s categorically okay – more than okay! –not to love every single second.

Do, however, keep in mind that if you experience prolonged periods of sadness, hopelessness, guilt or self-blame after you’ve had a baby, it could be a sign of postnatal depression. It’s important to talk to your midwife, GP or health visitor if you feel like this. If you’d like more information on PND, including sources of help and treatment, this article on the Tommy’s website gives a great overview.

7. HAPPY PARENTS = HAPPY BABY

When you’re in that new-baby fug, it seems inconceivable that you’ll ever find time for yourself again. It’s common for new parents to feel guilty for even craving a bit of me-time, but putting your well-being at the bottom of the list benefits no one, least of all your baby.

Try and find little pockets of time to do something that’s not at all related to being a parent. It might be something as simple as a soak in the bath, a coffee and catch-up with a friend or ten minutes uninterrupted with a book. Taking a break from routine, even if it’s just a walk around the block, can make you feel refreshed and more like yourself.

8. PUT A NOTE ON THE DOOR ASKING PEOPLE NOT TO KNOCK OR RING THE DOORBELL

Trust me when I say you will feel an unprecedented level of rage towards any unsuspecting postie or delivery person who rings the doorbell and wakes your baby from their hard-won nap!

It’s best to try and avoid such scenes by popping an unmissable note on the door that politely asks people NOT to knock/ring the doorbell and gives instructions for where to leave any parcels.

You don’t need to eat for two, flying is usually fine and you can dye your hair. Find out the truth behind 8 of the most misunderstood pregnancy myths.

MYTH 1: YOU CAN’T EXERCISE

Exercise is good for you in pregnancy and is not dangerous for your baby. As long there are no complications, you should be able to continue with most exercises you did before getting pregnant. You may need to slow down as your pregnancy progresses or if your maternity team advises you to. There are also a few exercises to avoid in pregnancy.

If you were not very active before you became pregnant, start with gentle exercise, such as walking. You can also try this introduction to pregnancy yoga. Yoga has been shown to help you with your physical and mental health during pregnancy and through birth.

Pregnancy MYTHS & THE FACTS

MYTH 2: YOU CAN’T DYE YOUR HAIR

Research (though limited) shows it is safe to colour your hair in pregnancy. The chemicals in hair dye are not highly toxic.

Some studies have found that very high doses of the chemicals in hair dyes may cause harm. But the amount you may be exposed to when colouring your hair is very low.

You should always carry out a patch test before using a permanent or semi-permanent hair dye, even if you are using your regular brand. Ask your hairdresser to do a patch test if you are in a salon.

26 l NOV-DEC 2022 l project-baby.co.uk PREGNANCY

MYTH 3: YOU SHOULD EAT FOR TWO

Needing to eat for 2 during pregnancy is a myth. Your body doesn’t need any extra calories until the third trimester, when you may need around 200 more per day. Have a look at what 200 calories looks like.

It is important to listen to your body and try to eat a healthy, balanced diet during pregnancy. Try not to put too much focus on counting calories. Just know that your baby doesn’t need you to eat lots more to give them all they need to grow.

MYTH 4: YOU CAN’T FLY ON AN AEROPLANE DURING PREGNANCY

Flying isn’t harmful to you or your baby. But you should talk to your midwife or doctor about any health issues, complications or concerns you have before booking anything.

After week 28 of pregnancy, the airline may want a letter from your midwife or doctor confirming your due date, and that you aren’t at risk of complications. Check your airline’s policy online before you book anything.

It’s also a good idea to make sure that your travel insurance covers you in pregnancy and that you take your medical notes with you.

MYTH 5: YOU CAN’T HAVE SEX WHILE PREGNANT

It’s safe to have sex when you’re pregnant unless your doctor or midwife has told you not to. For example, if you have had bleeding, have a low-lying placenta or cervical weakness, you may be advised to avoid having sex until after having your baby.

It’s normal for your sex drive to change in pregnancy. Some enjoy sex during pregnancy and others don’t.

Later in pregnancy, an orgasm, or sex itself, can sometimes trigger Braxton Hicks contractions. This is normal but don’t hesitate to talk to your midwife if you have any concerns.

If you or your sexual partner are having sex with other people during your pregnancy, it’s important to use a barrier form of contraception, such as a condom, to protect you and your baby from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

MYTH 6: YOU WILL BE GLOWING AND HAPPY ALL THE TIME

Unfortunately, not everyone will feel very ‘glowy’ during pregnancy. Pregnancy is an emotional time, and your hormones can cause highs and lows in your mood. You may also be coping with pregnancy symptoms and worrying about giving birth or adjusting to parenthood. It can be overwhelming, so if you are not feeling the glow.

If you are struggling with your feelings, try talking to your midwife or doctor. They will not judge you for how you feel and you are not alone. Up to 1 in 5 women in the UK develop some form of mental health problem, such as anxiety and depression, during their pregnancy or in the year after birth.

MYTH 7: YOU WILL HAVE STRANGE CRAVINGS

What do you mean, you’re not craving pickles?! Pregnancy is different for everyone, so not everyone will have cravings.

We don’t know why some people have cravings, but they are probably triggered by hormonal changes in your body, which can affect taste and smell.

Speak to your midwife or doctor if you crave inedible things, such as dirt, clay or laundry detergent. This is a serious condition called pica, which is caused by a lack of iron (anaemia).

MYTH 8: YOUR BABY WILL ARRIVE ON THEIR DUE DATE

Your due date is useful to help you plan, especially for maternity leave, but remember that the date is only an estimate. It is common for babies to be born after their estimated due date, particularly for first pregnancies.

If your baby is born before 37 weeks, this is called a premature or preterm birth. If you are at risk of premature birth, your doctors will support you to make sure that your baby gets all the extra care they need.

HOW TO SURVIVE Christmas when you’re Pregnant

When you’re preparing for your baby’s arrival, it can already seem like your to-do list is never-ending. There’s your birth plan to think about, the hospital bag to pack, maternity leave to organise, all while growing a whole new person in your womb.

Add Christmas to the mix and getting everyone done can seem overwhelming. But don’t panic, as the festive season doesn’t have to be stressful during pregnancy. Here’s how to not only survive Christmas when you’re pregnant but actively enjoy it too!

1. DON’T COMMIT TO DOING TOO MUCH

Christmas can be an extremely busy time of year and you may be fielding all sorts of invitations from family and friends. Do yourself a favour and don’t be afraid to pace yourself and turn down any events you think might be too much. Make sure you have plenty of time to rest and take it easy. Those who care about you will completely understand that you might not be up for any wild nights out or long hikes after Christmas lunch. Prioritise the events which are important to you but don’t overcommit yourself.

2. PRIORITISE COMFORT

Choose outfits you find comfortable and which will accommodate your growing bump.

This is probably not going to be the year to break out your highest heels and tiniest mini dress. Your friends, family and loved ones won’t bat an eyelid if you turn up in flats, wearing something which prioritises comfort over fashion. If you’re heading to someone’s home to celebrate the festive season and you do want to dress up, take a bag of comfortable clothes and a pair slippers you can change into if you need to.

3. CUT CORNERS WITHOUT ANY GUILT

If you’re normally someone who bakes their own Christmas cake from scratch or makes your entire family a handmade wreath for their front doors, cut yourself some slack and adjust your expectations of yourself. Being pregnant

can be tiring and hard work so no one is going to blame you if you decide to make life easier for yourself and cut some corners this year. This might mean buying some shop-bought mince pies, turning to pre-prepared veg for Christmas lunch or simply delegating some of your usual tasks to someone else. You can still have a wonderful Christmas without running yourself ragged to achieve it.

4. EMBRACE THE MOCKTAILS

Non-alcoholic drinks don’t have to be boring and you don’t have to resign yourself to sipping water throughout the festive season.

There are so many amazing non-alcoholic options available now, treat yourself to some delicious sounding mocktails or alcohol-free alternatives to your usualfavourite tipple.

28 l NOV-DEC 2022 l project-baby.co.uk

5. KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE A PARTY

You might usually be the last woman standing at any party but give yourself permission to leave early if you start flagging. Not only will you appreciate an early night but you’ll get to avoid the awkward feeling of being the only sober person in a room full of people who should have stopped drinking several rounds earlier. Warn your partner in advance that you may well want to leave earlier than usual and work out a signal between yourselves so you both know when it is time to say your goodbyes and head home.

6. ENJOY MAKING TREASURED MEMORIES

This will be your last Christmas before the arrival of a new member of the family so take some time to really enjoy it. Whether you are a couple expecting your first child or you have children already who are getting reading to meet their younger sibling, enjoy the family dynamic you have and make this one a Christmas to remember.

7. LET OTHER PEOPLE TAKE THE STRAIN

If you are normally the person who races around doing everything for everyone else at Christmas, slow your pace down. Accept any help that is offered and delegate some of your usual jobs to others. It’s important that you don’t try to do too much so you can absolutely sit back and put your feet up without any feelings of guilt. Let your loved ones look after you for a change and remember that next year, you’ll have a little one to look after so rest while you can.

8. DON’T BE AFRAID TO BACK OUT OF PLANS

No one knows exactly how they will feel in the final stages of pregnancy and you may find you have agreed to some events, which now no longer seem so appealing. If you’re feeling tired, unwell or just not in the mood, don’t be afraid to cancel any plans you have made. Those who care about you will understand and will want you to put your health and the health of your baby first. Just explain and apologise, there will be other opportunities to meet up and celebrate in the future.

9. SET UP A WRAPPING STATION

Wrapping presents may seem like more of an endurance test than usual and you’ll probably find your bump keeps getting in the way. Don’t even try to wrap everything up in one go, tackle presents as you buy them. Avoid getting down on the floor to wrap gifts, instead set yourself up at a table and make yourself as comfortable as possible. Get your partner helping too – you could even get a production line going if you can’t trust them to meet your usual standards by themselves.

10. DON’T LET CHRISTMAS PUT YOU OFF GETTING CHECKED OUT

At Christmas time, it can seem like everything has shut down as people go and celebrate with their families. However, the maternity unit at your local hospital will be open throughout the festive period and you should always seek medical attention if you are concerned about your baby or your own health. Don’t put off seeking advice just because it’s Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Continue paying attention to your baby’s movements and get checked out if there is anything you are concerned about. No midwife or doctor will ever consider a worried pregnant woman to be a nuisance, no matter what day of the year it is.

PREGNANCY

Why IS MY BABY WAKING IN THE NIGHT?

As a sleep consultant, one of the most common issues I come across is babies who are waking multiple times a night and taking short naps during the day. Most people don’t realise how common this is and that the two issues are linked together.

Typically these types of wakes happen once your baby passes the 4 month mark. No longer needing such regular feeds as when they were newborn, parents are left confused and frustrated at the intensity of the sleep deprivation they’re now dealing with.

The scientific explanation for this is to do with sleep cycles, essentially your baby now wakes fully between these cycles of sleep which are 2 hours at night and 40 minutes during the day.

BABY IS OVERTIRED

YOU’RE NOT ALONE

Babies sleep changes at 4 months and the newborn phase is well and truly over. They start to become more wakeful and that is why healthy sleep habits now become more important than ever before. Most people are baffled at how to resolve this issue, thinking this is just part of being a parent now and there isn’t much you can do but accept it.

This is not true and below are my top tips for how you can begin to teach your baby to sleep longer for naps and ultimately learn to sleep through the night, which by the way IS possible from 4 months of age!!

This is a term that many mums are familiar with but most don’t know how to get on top of it. Your baby being overtired is a key reason why they end up fighting sleep even though they’re tired and then waking soon after you eventually get them to sleep. Confusing, I know.

If you only work on one thing with your baby let this be it. Each baby can stay awake for a set period of time before needing a nap. If you can put the baby down within this time frame, you’ll find they will settle much easier.

Tired signs are not reliable as often when babies rub their eyes they’re actually becoming overtired and some babies show no tired signs at all. Awake windows, as they are called, allow you to know when your baby will biologically be tired. This will also help them to get the day sleep they need for their age and be on an age appropriate schedule.

DEVELOPMENT

THE BABY DOESN’T HAVE A CONSISTENT NAP SCHEDULE & ISN’T GETTING THE DAY’S SLEEP THEY NEED.

Having a nap schedule for your baby does not mean you need to stay at home all day everyday. In fact most babies only need a short morning and third nap of less than an hour so having these on the go is possible.

Waking baby at a consistent time in the morning will help you to set the nap times. Waking them from the morning nap will also ensure they get what they need for the middle of the day nap, which is the most important of the day as it should ideally be 2-2.5 hours in length.

This then in turn allows you to set a consistent bedtime, which for babies 4-12 months actually needs to be around 6.30pm. Early bedtimes DO NOT mean early wake ups, it’s the opposite and allows the baby to have a better night sleep as well. Also means you get an entire evening to yourself - who doesn’t want that at the end of the day?

BABY NEEDS YOU TO FALL ASLEEP AT BEDTIME

However baby gets to sleep in the first place is what they will look for when they wakesame story for naps.

If you use a dummy to get them to sleep, guess what they’re looking for 1-2 hours later on the wake up. Same with feeding to sleep, which also makes it harder to know if they’re genuinely hungry or just feeding from association to get back to sleep.

Any form of rocking, holding, patting or motion is a form of assistance and will mean your baby cannot fully self-settle.

To teach this you need to stop all assistance, either cold turkey or gradually it’s up to you and use a suitable settling method instead to get baby to sleep. This shouldn’t take longer than 1-2 weeks maximum and does mean leaving your baby to cry it out either.

BABY IS HAVING NIGHT FEEDS THEY DON’T NEED

This can be a tricky one, sometimes it’s difficult to know if your baby needs a feed or not. Generally my advice is, if the baby is of a healthy weight, thriving and tracking their line I would aim for 1 night feed from 4 months then ditch that by the time they’re 6 months.

If you’re feeding excessively in the night, baby doesn’t take as much during the day and you end up with something called reverse cycling so cutting those feeds is key to tanking them up more in the day.

You can reduce time at the breast every couple of days, reduce the amount in the bottle or go cold turkey and use a settling method to get them back to sleep when they wake.

Sleep isn’t easy, none of these things are taught to us, people don’t tell you about awake windows, nap schedules and sleep associations when you have a baby. Be kind to yourself, it takes time to figure this all out but you can!

Consistency is key, whatever you do, be consistent and you’ll see results. You don’t have to suffer and feel guilty for wanting things to change, it’s okay to feel like you need to sleep - WE ALL DO! Sleep is a biological need and not a luxury.

Motherhood is hard enough so make your life easier and teach your baby to sleep independently all night long. Avoiding overtiredness will also mean you have the best chance of your baby settling well and not being a tired grumpy mess all day. You will not regret it.

A Christmas Water Birth

Around 6 a.m. on Christmas morning Diana got up to pee and saw traces of blood. Contractions were starting but they were not yet intense, so Diana suggested to her husband David that they open presents while they had the chance. Her 5 year old daughter Ada had a nice hour of opening gifts and enjoying her last moments of being an only child.

While Ada was playing with her presents, David was cleaning up the wrapping paper trying to make enough room for the birthing pool. The contractions started getting stronger. Diana walked into the music room and closed the door to get through each contraction in silence. Her mother and sister come over to help with Ada. Diana continued to camp out in the music room timing contractions and reading user manuals for the Christmas toys.

Diana’s midwife, Jill, came over around 2 p.m. to check her vitals and everything was looking good. It was time to get in the pool. The water felt divine. She said the best thing about the pool was the buoyancy. She did not have to hold her body up against the persistent pull of gravity.

Diana and everyone else in the house, includ ing Ada, remained silent during contractions. Everyone knew it was important to Diana to have a silent birth. When it was time to push she let out a few groans because well that’s what it takes to push as hard as you can! The baby started crowing and Diana realized that Ada was

not in the room. She forgot about the silent birth plan and started yelling for Ada. Ada came running in the room with her grandmother and aunt just in time to see her baby sister, Annebelle Apple, being born at 6:45 p.m. on Christmas day. Ada was so protective of her mother and sister she would not leave their side until she fell asleep later that night. This family had the most magical Christmas day welcoming a new baby and never left the house!

Diana consumed her placenta in a yummy strawberry orange placenta smoothie almost immediately after giving birth. Her emotional and physical health returned back to normal quickly. Could the placenta smoothie be responsible? Diana thinks it is.

Research suggests consuming the placenta after birth restore vital hormones to the mother and protect them from postpartum depression.

Have you tried your placenta? Let us know your thoughts over on Instagram.

Baby Games

Ramp up your repertoire with these games.

In the early weeks, enjoying your newborn consists mostly of gazing at her while she sleeps or nurses (since that’s what she spends almost all of her time doing!). But before long, she becomes more wakeful and interested in the world around her and you’ve got some entertaining to do. “Babies need a variety of experiences,” explains Jan Blaxall, an early years specialist and trainer in London, Ont. “And the key ingredient in their play is one-on-one attention from you.” Here are some fun ideas to get you started with baby games.

1. SPLISH, SPLASH

Water has such a joyful, relaxing effect on children - feel free to take advantage any time of the day. Your baby can go right in the tub (with you, if you’d like!) as you use your hands, sponges and funnels to splash water on different parts of his body. When your baby can sit up, spread a vinyl tablecloth on the floor and set out a shallow pan of water with lots of cups, sponges, spoons and maybe his own baby to wash.

2. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL

Fill empty water bottles with interesting things - rice, buttons, Jell-O, water mixed with liquid soap, food colouring or oil. Crawlers will love chasing after a two-litre pop bottle half-filled with coloured water, as it rolls along the floor.

3. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Some days it may seem like a lot of effort just to get outside, but don’t underestimate the positive effect a little fresh air has on your baby and you. “When you get out of the house, you stop thinking about all the jobs that need to be done, and become more attuned to your baby,” Blaxall says. Lift your baby out of the stroller, pull a leaf off a tree and let him feel it. Put his hand on the tree trunk. If the area is clean, put him on the grass and let him feel around. Doing this gives babies a sense of what their world is made of, instead of just what they see, Blaxall explains.

4. ROCK AND ROLL

Your big exercise ball doesn’t have to collect dust until you get back into workout mode. Use the ball for all your baby’s stages - it’s a soft, bouncy place for you to sit while holding her (you get a little light ab work at the same time). Or use the ball for your baby’s tummy time. Hold her securely on top of the ball with both your hands and roll her very slightly in different directions. Once your baby’s on the move, she’ll love pushing this huge ball around on the floor and chasing after it.

As soon as possible, let your child communicate. As soon as a child can communicate, I like to talk to them, so do not jump in and answer questions for them. Not only am I learning about them; I am also listening for any language difficulties, temperament issues like shyness or anxiety, and also any concerns they may have themselves. I learn a lot from speaking with the child directly.

36 l NOV-DEC 2022 l project-baby.co.uk
DEVELOPMENT

When to take a break, you want to excite babies enough with baby games to rev their engines, but not overwhelm them - so it’s important to recognise the cues that they’re not keen on your game of choice, or have had enough. “Babies who are overstimulated either shut their eyes or look away,” Your baby will resort to crying if you miss that important sign. The key is to be fully engaged in the play, making lots of eye contact so you’re aware of your baby’s changing reactions.

5. PEEKABOO 2.0

Covering your face with your hands, then letting go with an enthusiastic “Peekaboo!” will entertain baby well into her toddler years. Babies love to be surprised as they learn that things they can’t see still exist, so shake up your baby games by ducking down and reappearing with a hat on, or a funny face. Cover a toy with a blanket and ask your baby, “Where’d it go?” Crawlers will adore early games of hide-and-seek, with you popping out from unexpected places as they explore hallways and bedrooms.

6. HIGH (CHAIR) ART

Once your baby can sit comfortably in her high chair, try placing safe, edible play materials on her tray (not that she should eat them, but if some gets in her mouth, it’s OK!). Let her explore homemade fingerpaint, or playdough made with ingredients from your cupboard, or simply put blobs of thick pudding or Jell-O on the tray so she can slide her hands around in mess-making bliss.

7. TUESDAY A.M. DANCE PARTY

Who says that babies only need lullabies and Mozart? Shake up your musical menu and have a little dance party à deux. “Different beats, different jargon, different flavours of music all stimulate different parts of the brain,” as well as helping your baby develop language and social skills, Blaxall explains. Besides, it’s fun! And whether it’s a rattle or a margarine tub-turned-drum, have instruments on hand so you can both take active roles in the fun.

8. UNDER COVER

Fort fun starts young! Put a big blanket over a table and sit underneath with your young baby on your lap and a few special toys for a new perspective on the world. Roll a ball out of your fort, and then find out where it went. “Even young babies can’t just sit all the time,” Blaxall says. “Change up their position - on their tummy, upright in your arms, on your lap, over your shoulder, facing outward.” As your child grows, let him crawl up on piles of pillows, and create paths and tunnels with big boxes and couch cushions.it.

TO MAKE THE FUN EVEN MORE MEANINGFUL FOR YOUR LITTLE ONE:

Show her you’re impressed

Your baby reaches for the toy you’re holding slightly above her. She swings her fist, grabs for it and - hurray! - she makes contact. Naturally, you lavish her with praise. And new research shows that your enthusiasm is doing more than just bringing a smile to her face. “Babies need that social cheering section, people noticing and getting excited about what they’re doing. It’s wiring the brain for both relationships and learning,” Blaxall says.

Take turns

Whether it’s shaking a rattle (try doing it fast one time, slow the next)

or talking about your day, give your child time to respond or imitate the action back to you. By doing so, you’re creating the sense of a meaningful partnership, according to Blaxall, where the child gets to be the leader and the follower.

Mix it up

“The best baby activities are multidimensional,” explains Blaxall. “Engage lots of senses - play music and have interesting things to touch and explore, and combine that with movement and with language.”

When to take a break

You want to excite babies enough with baby games to rev their engines, but not overwhelm them - so it’s important to recognize the cues that they’re not keen on your game of choice, or have had enough. “Babies who are overstimulated either shut their eyes or look away,” says Blaxall. Your baby will resort to crying if you miss that important sign. The key is to be fully engaged in the play, making lots of eye contact so you’re aware of your baby’s changing reactions.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO

Safe Sleep

The health and safety of a newborn baby is the top priority for any new parents out there. However, it can be overwhelming. Especially for first-time parents, who have little-to-no experience in what it takes to keep a newborn safe. They have read all the books, and listened to the experts and experienced friends and family, but it can still be a lot to take in.

One of the biggest concerns for parents is sleep. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is one of the top worries of new parents everywhere, and it can add to their sleep deprivation. They spend a lot of time at night, awake and watching their baby, instead of getting the sleep they need.

Why Is Safe Sleep So Important?

It may seem obvious, but safe sleep is one of the most important things that parents need to pay attention to when it comes to their newborn’s wellbeing, and it will carry them through infancy and into toddlerhood. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has their own guidelines for safe sleep, but also why it is so important.

According to Health, when you implement safe sleep measures, you are reducing the risk of SIDS and other causes of sleeprelated deaths in newborns and infants. This would include suffocation, and positions that would see them asphyxiate while they are asleep. Since mum and dad are usually sleeping when the baby is, it is the best thing they can do to make sure their baby is safe when they are not there.

Clothing Matters

When we think of safe sleep, we are quick to jump to where a baby is sleeping, but clothing can be just as important. It is important to make sure that the baby is comfortable when they are sleeping to prevent them from getting too cold, or too hot during the night when mum and dad are not monitoring their temperature.

There is a good rule of thumb when it comes to dressing a baby for sleep to keep them safe. The rule of thumb is that you want to give them one extra layer than you are comfortable sleeping in. If you are comfortable in your home with just pyjamas, you are going to want to add one more layer to your baby. This could be pyjamas and a sleep sack/swaddle. Just make sure nothing is too loose, and the pyjamas are a comfortable fit.

What Should They Sleep In?

There seems to be endless amounts of products on the market that a baby could sleep in, but they are not all going to be rated the same when it comes to sleep. According to Canada, very few items are considered safe for infant sleep, and they include a bassinet, crib or cradle (like a Moses basket). Items like swings, car seats and other infant seats and containers are not considered safe for sleep and if a baby falls asleep in any of these, they should be moved to a safer sleep surface.

The Deal With Co-Sleeping

The terms co-sleeping and bedsharing seem to be used interchangeably, but they are very different. Co-sleeping is when a parent and baby share a room, but they have their own sleeping areas. This is considered safest. According to NPR, the recommendation is that infants share a room with their parents for at least 6 months, but they should try and make it to a year. This has also been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS.

This means that the baby has their own sleeping surface (like mentioned earlier), but they are in the same room as their parent. This can make it easier for parents, who don’t have to travel too far to get to their baby in the middle of the night. They will also be alerted if something is not right during the night.

The Deal With Bed Sharing

Bed sharing is when mum brings the baby into the bed with her to sleep. This is a preferred choice by a lot of parents, because it does typically lead to more sleep at night. It is also convenient for a mother who is breast-feeding throughout the night. However, despite the seemingly benefits, it is not recommended by most health panels. That is because there is an increased risk of a baby being trapped by their parents, or getting caught in blankets and other sleeping devices.

According to Healthline, this type of family sleeping is very common in countries around the world, and while it may be common in the US, it is not advised. However, that doesn’t mean that families are going to abide by it, so there are safety guidelines that families can follow to try and make it as safe as possible.

The Safe Sleep 7

• Try to keep the room temperature between 16 -20°C

• Always put your baby on their back for every sleep, day and night

• Give your baby a clear, safe sleep space, in the same room as you.

• A clear cot is a safer cot

• Firm sleep surface

• Keep him lightly dressed.

• Don’t drink (alcohol) and sleep together.

Thule Chariot Cross

Thule Chariot Cross gives you the freedom to enjoy almost any outdoor adventure with your child. It is designed for active families who want a versatile, tough, and stylish bike trailer, and who love being outdoors all year round. The all-round trailer and stroller offers comfort and flexibility for families with an active lifestyle, and the optional Jogging Kit (sold separately) makes it a great training partner.

Natasha Editor Says: If you’re after a stroller that does it all then the Chariot Cross is definitely a contender, This storller can go from a nice country walk to skiing (and everything in between) there’s not many prams or strollers you can say that about. It folds down to a decent compact fold and the extra basket on the back is super hand. But the most important feature is it’s a dream to push. The boys love being able to sit side-by-side and a little pocket for their things. Can add a sling for a newborn too and seats do recline. Only downside is it doesn’t fit through a standard door.

5 WaystoOutsmart your Toddler

The battle lines were drawn: It was me against him. And my 2-year-old was a formidable opponent.

I lay in wait by the stairs, a pair of size-2T sweatpants clutched to my chest. Suddenly, my slippery little boy popped up from behind the relative safety of the sofa. Our eyes met. He squealed and bolted for the kitchen. Game on!

Somehow, my master’s degree in psychology had lulled me into the mistaken notion that motherhood would be a piece of cake. I knew the latest child-rearing theories. I’d handle behavior problems with finesse. Ha!

Never did I envision how challenging raising a stubborn and feisty toddler would be. Thankfully, I’ve now learned several great toddler-taming strategies that work quite well. Sometimes, I’ve found, you need to shelve the “I am the parent! Do as I say!” approach and try a little creative thinking!

1. ACT LIKE AN IDIOT

“Even the most defiant toddler will take pity on us if we seem like total incompetents,” says Harvey Karp, MD, author of The Happiest Toddler on the Block. The trick is to convince your child that you should be helped, not resisted.

• Be forgetful. If she’s refusing to put away her toys, pick up a few and put them in an unexpected place, like the bathtub or a kitchen cabinet. When your child balks - she knows where things belong, even as young as 2innocently say, “What? I’m putting your toys in your toy box!” She’ll likely take pity on you and help you put her stuff where it really belongs.

• Be wrong. Next time you foresee a battle to get your toddler into the stroller, try squeezing into it yourself. Chances are good she’ll announce, “That’s mine!” Finally her possessive streak is good for something!

• Be incompetent. Put your coat on backward and place your shoes on your hands. Say, “I’m ready to go, are you?” She’ll laugh, straighten you out, and get her own shoes on for once. Don’t worry, your child won’t really think you’re a fool, says Dr. Karp. This is just a fun tactic, like playing hide-and-seek and pretending you can’t find her.

54 l NOV-DEC 2022 l project-baby.co.uk
DEVELOPMENT

2. BECOME A SILVERLINING EXPERT

Pretend everything’s great. Your attitude, and the way you handle disappointments (big and small), can greatly affect how your child learns to do the same. Use positive language. The right words can lessen the blow of letdowns and make mundane tasks seem interesting and fun.

For instance, the day 3-year-old Josh had been looking forward to going to the playground, it rained. Rather than let him sulk and stomp angrily around the house, his mum Sue said, “This rain is wonderful! Now we get a chance to have that indoor picnic I’ve been planning for you.” Josh was intrigued - an indoor picnic sounded at least as much fun as going to the playground. Turning disappointment into delight is part of the magic of being a parent.

3. TRY REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY

You say “yes,” she says “no!” You say “no,” she says “yes!” This verbal tug-of-war is frustrating, but it’s actually a healthy declaration of her growing independence. There’s even an official name for this stage. “When your child doesn’t want to wear certain clothes or taste new foods, it’s called ‘the oppositionalism of toddlerhood,’” says Temple University’s Laurence Steinberg, PhD, author of The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting.

The solution? If you want your child to do something, like put on her socks, pretend you don’t want her to do it. When I want Kevin, now 3, to get ready quickly, I pretend I’m in a big rush. “Me come, too?” he’ll ask. “No, honey, Mummy’s in a hurry today. Why don’t you stay here with Daddy instead?” My son, who always prefers an adventure to staying home, will dash off to the closet to get his shoes and jacket.

When he returns, I say, “I’m not sure you can get ready in time to come with me.” That gets him to start hurriedly shoving his little arms into his jacket sleeves - and then I say, “Wow, you really can get ready quickly!” He beams with pride and allows me to finish zipping him up in record time. Say goodbye to the old capture-Kevin-and-yank-his-clothes-on-whilepinning-him-to-the-floor maneuver.

4. SAY, “YES, BUT....”

Toddler Amanda loved playing outside. She’d press her nose against the screen door and plead to go out. “She’d throw a colossal fit if I refused to let her,” says her mum, Julie. But once Julie learned the “Yes, but...” trick, Amanda’s tantrums subsided. Instead of saying no all the time, Julie now says, “Yes, Amanda, you may go outside, but after dinner.” Or “Yes, you may ride your big wheel, but we need to wait for the rain to stop.”

Toddlers are a lot more cooperative if they just know when they can do whatever it is they want. The younger your child, the less patience she’ll have to wait. So sidetrack her opposition by offering up another activity with your “Yes, but.” You could say, “Yes, you may have a cookie, but first we’re going to make dinner together.“

5. STAY A STEP AHEAD

This is not a quick solution so much as a smart way of thinking. It comes down to consistent routines and reasonable expectations, so you don’t have to be a toddler mind reader.

Most toddler battles are caused by hunger, fatigue or frustration, but it’s easier to recognise those things after a tantrum starts - and after a few slices of apple would have saved the day. Keeping your child on an even keel can be relatively simple: Try to make his basic needs - food, sleep - a priority, and not something you squeeze into a busy day.

• Put him down for a nap before he seems super tired.

• Feed him several small meals to keep up his blood sugar (and mood) level.

• Give him plenty of encouragement - he’ll be less inclined to flip out when something goes wrong or he doesn’t get his way. Think twice before you make life unnecessarily hard on him. If you’re thinking of braving the mall with a tired child - don’t. The notion “maybe I can just squeeze in one more errand” has been the downfall of many otherwise rational mums.

Of course, if you have a toddler, you’ve already learned that life rarely goes as planned. So, here’s one last trick to try on yourself: Act as if you know what to do - and soon enough, you will!

Toddler Troubles: HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD LOVE BATHTIME

For many toddlers, having a bath and splashing around in the tub is a fun and relaxing part of their day. For other toddlers, bath time is not as appealing, especially as they develop their likes and dislikes, learn how to say “no,” and prefer to do things on their own. This is completely normal behavior, but it can sure make bath time a challenge! Read on to learn how to help your child enjoy taking a bath.

WHY KIDS MAY NOT LIKE TAKING BATHS

It can be hard to understand what’s not to love about warm water, bubbles, and bath toys, not to mention having Mom or Dad’s undivided attention. Yet some young children - perhaps even your toddler - seem to have an aversion to bathing and bath time.

Here are a few common reasons

dislike taking baths:

kids

Sensory sensitivity. Some toddlers dislike bath time because they don’t enjoy the sensory experience - they don’t like being wet or getting their hair washed. Or maybe they’re too cold when they get out of the bath or the towel is scratchy against their skin.

Anxiety or apprehension. If your toddler’s aversion to bath time comes on suddenly, they may have had a bad experience with water and now feel nervous or fearful. Perhaps the baby-bath temperature was too hot or cold, or maybe your baby nearly slipped once and that scared them.

Preferring other activities. Some kids don’t want to stop what they’re doing in order to hop in the tub. For some children, it’s hard to swap playing and other fun activities for taking a bath. (This is partly why it helps to make toddler bath time more fun!)

If you’re encountering strong opposition at bath time, experts recommend not forcing your child to take a bath. Instead, focus on being patient, getting to the root of the problem, and addressing your little one’s needs. When you understand the reason behind the aversion, it will be a lot easier to know how to get your baby or toddler to like baths!

58 l NOV-DEC 2022 l project-baby.co.uk

HOW OFTEN SHOULD TODDLERS BATHE?

Deciding how often to bathe your toddler may depend in part on how sticky and dirty they get! But unless your little one is playing in the mud every day, bathing a toddler on a daily basis wouldn’t be necessary and may not be ideal, as kids have delicate skin that can become dry and irritated. Giving your toddler a bath two or three times a week is usually plenty. Of course, it’s OK to bathe more often as needed.

If your toddler puts up a fight at bath time, it’s better not to insist, even if that means less frequent bathing. A quick sponge bath or wiping your toddler with a soapy washcloth will work until they get used to baths.

HOW TO MAKE BATH TIME FOR KIDS MORE FUN

Whether your toddler loves or hates bath time, you can take advantage of these tips and tricks on how to make it more fun for all. When bath time doesn’t feel like a chore or obligation, there’s a better chance that children will embrace it - and getting your toddler to take a bath becomes a lot easier. You’ll find a few of our best strategies below.

Include Bath Toys or Music

Bringing toys into your toddler’s bath is the oldest trick in the book, and it works. Kids love splashing around at bath time, and it’s even more enjoyable if you plop some boats, animals, squirters, cups, dolls, letters, or balls into the water and play some lively tunes.

When choosing bath toys, look for nontoxic, water-friendly varieties that are made with plastic and without holes, if possible. Mold, bacteria, or fungus can grow inside toys or along creases, so solid toys are best. Set the toys out to dry after every bath and store them away from the tub in between bath times.

LET YOUR TODDLER TAKE THE LEAD

Giving your child some control over bath time may make it more enjoyable. Let your little one choose which bubbles to use, or squeeze the shampoo bottle, or use the washcloth without your help. Letting toddlers make decisions and do things on their own, such as when getting dressed or at bath time, helps boost their confidence and encourages their emerging self care skills and independence.

INCLUDE PRETEND PLAY

Providing toys during bath time is a game changer for toddlers, but play (and especially pretend play and any kind of unstructured play) is also essential for your little one’s overall development, as toddlers learn through play. Why not encourage it in the bath? Some ideas for pretend play in the bath include using kitchen items (kid-safe and water-safe) like a strainer or cup while pretending to make dinner bathing a doll and pretending to be the caretaker acting out stories you and your child read the night before playing games like Simon Says creating a story with the bath toys pretending the tub is the ocean and making discoveries.

USE BATH PAINTS

If you think toys will make your toddler love taking a bath, get ready for the power of bath paints! That’s right - painting in the bath. Let your little one paint on their body or the tub, then wash everything off during the bath. Not only is it fun for your child, but it’s also easy to clean! (Note: Be sure to test the bathroom grout for staining before the art session begins!)

ADD BATH TIME TO YOUR ROUTINE

Kids thrive with structure and order, so if you make bath time part of their daily or nightly bedtime on certain days (say, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for example), it may help your child embrace it. Your little one will know to expect it, and that could make all the difference. If you bathe your child in the evening, a calming bath and bedtime routine can also help your toddler sleep better - a win-win!

HOW HAS AN OUTDOOR BRAND GOT INTO PUSHCHAIRS?

Thule has for more than 80 years made active lives easier for people around the world by designing, developing and manufacturing product that enabled people to bring their gear with them. In line with the brand tagline Bring your life, we decided a decade ago to utilize our competence in consumer insight driven innovation to also develop products that helped you bring what you loved most when you lived an active life: your children. We started in what was the most logical way for us with bike related products, bike trailers and bike seats. As we have the world’s most sold premium bike trailer Thule Chariot, which offers strolling and jogging modes in addition to the biking mode, it felt natural to launch the world’s best jogging stroller Thule Glide and a top-of-the-line all-terrain stroller Thule Urban Glide in 2015. We have since then expanded out stroller offer to a broader offer and currently have five pushchairs in the market.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT TO THULE’S ACTIVE WITH KIDS RANGES COMPARE TO OTHER BRANDS?

There are many strong stroller brands and some also offer additional products. What we feel we do better than most is to focus on the parent that truly wants to live and active everyday life with their children. Our broad offer covering from-birth prams, pushchairs as well as child bike seats, bike trailers, baby carriers and soon also car seats - are all products designed for ease-of-use to get families going in their daily lives.

HOW HAVE YOU RAISED AWARENESS FOR THULE STROLLER PORTFOLIO, AND WHAT DIFFERENTIATES THIS PUSHCHAIR FROM YOUR COMPETITORS ‘CITY STROLLERS’?

We feel we have designed a from-birth compact city-stroller that delivers “as the full package” on all those aspects that a modern active parent seeks: a sturdy, well-made frame and wheels makes the pushchair feel light and nimble. The cosy bassinet and the padded comfortable reversible seat and easy one-hand manipulation while still maintaining a compact design. A sun canopy that truly protects, but still looks nice and a fantastic basket for all your shopping.

WHAT IS THULE’S MAIN MESSAGE FOR PARENTS IN THE UK?

We have quickly become one of the leading stroller brands in markets where parents already knew of our quality products and brand in the juvenile category in those countries where parents bike a lot with their children. It has taken us longer to make a name for ourselves in the UK, but we know that the current offer with the best 3-wheel all-terrain stroller in the market with the Thule Urban Glide 2 and the newly launched Thule Spring now being complemented by a great frombirth compact pushchair with the Thule Shine we hope to see a similar growth in the UK as we have in many other markets.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR THULE?

All new product development projects have challenges. When targeting a very flexible compact from-birth stroller much of the challenges are around wanting to offer all the various versions of use, such as bassinet and car seat adapters from birth as well as parent and front-facing options in the seated version, while making the product also perform well as a compact pushchair and look great while doing it.

The next few years will be super exciting for us in the juvenile category. We have just started to see the pick-up in sales of Thule Shine and Thule Spring in the pushchair category and are launching a modular premium i-Size approved car seat family in the autumn of 2023 and several key new juvenile products the year after.

Safe Weaning

GAGGING

Your baby may gag when you introduce solid foods. This is because they’re learning to regulate the amount of food they can chew and swallow at one time. If your baby is gagging, this is what may happen:

• Your baby’s eyes may water

• They might push their tongue forward (or out of their mouth)

• To bring the food forward in their mouth —they might make a retching movement, or they may vomit

CHOKING

Choking can happen with hard foods, bones and small round foods that can easily get stuck in the throat. Remember, you should:

• Cut small round foods, like grapes and cherry tomatoes, into small pieces, peel the skin off fruit, vegetables and sausages (though remember that sausages can be high in salt).

• Remove hard pips or stones from fruit, remove bones from meat or fish.

• Avoid hard foods like raw carrot, apple, whole nuts and peanuts.

• Never give them raw jelly cubes, they can get stuck in the throat.

WHAT TO DO IF MY BABY IS CHOKING

If you think your child is choking and cannot breathe properly:

• Shout for help.

• Get them out of the high chair.

• Support their chest and chin with one hand and with the heel of your hand - give five sharp blows between the shoulder blades.

If this doesn’t dislodge the object Call 999

WEANING SPECIAL

STORING

AND

REHEATING FOOD

Storing

If you’re batch cooking, cool the food down (ideally within one to two hours) and then freeze or refrigerate. If you’re keeping it in the fridge – use it within 2 days. With rice, make sure it cools within an hour and then goes straight in the fridge or freezer. Rice kept in the fridge should be eaten within 24 hours – never reheat it more than once.

Defrosting

Defrost frozen food thoroughly before reheating. The safest way to do this is in the fridge overnight, or by defrosting it in the microwave (using the defrost setting).

Reheating

When reheating food, make sure it’s steaming hot all the way through, then let it cool before giving it to your baby. If you’re using a microwave, give it a good stir to get rid of any hot air pockets –always check the temperature before feeding your baby. Any cooked food should only be reheated once.

TOP TIP

If you need to cool food down quickly, put it in an airtight container and run cold water over it. Keep stirring so it cools throughout.

FOODS TO AVOID

It’s important to know which foods are safe for your little one. Here’s a list of which ones to avoid and why:

• Sugary snacks – sugar can cause tooth decay. You don’t need to add sugar to your baby’s food either.

• Honey – avoid honey until your baby is 12 months old – it contains bacteria that can lead to infant botulism, a serious illness that can make your baby very unwell.

• Salty foods – like bacon, sausages, chips with extra salt, crackers, crisps, ready-meals, takeaways, gravy and meals made with stock cubes. Babies shouldn’t eat salty foods as it isn’t good for their kidneys, there’s no need to add salt to their food either.

• Soft cheeses — can contain a bacteria called listeria, these include:mouldripened soft cheese, such as brie or camembertripened goats’ milk cheese, such as chevre, soft blue veined cheese, such as Roquefort.

• Unpasteurised cheeses – due to the risk of listeria. Check the labels to make sure you’re buying cheese made from pasteurised milkraw shellfish – this can increase the risk of food poisoning. Children should only eat shellfish that has been thoroughly cooked.

• Shark, swordfish or marlin – high levels of mercury in these fish can affect your baby’s growing nervous system.

DRINKS TO AVOID

• Fruit juice or smoothies – avoid before 12 months as babies don’t need them.

• Squash, fizzy drinks, flavoured milk – even when diluted, for older babies and toddlers, these drinks can fill your child up so they’re not hungry for healthier food. Instead, offer sips of water from a cup with meals.

• Cows’ milk – cows’ milk does not have the right balance of nutrients for babies, so should not be given as a drink before 12 months (however, small amounts can be used in cooking)

• Follow-on formula, growing up milks and goodnight milks are not suitable for babies under 6 months.

door. Your babies' skin is very delicate. It's 30% thinner and more porous than an adult's skin. Mama Bamboo's sustainably sourced nappies are soft, breathable & temperature regulating, helping to reduce nappy rash. Unlike some other brands we use 100% plant-based top and bottom covers, not just 'enhanced' material. Our nappies are also free from elemental chlorine, alcohol, latex and PVC. We are proof that disposable nappies and wipes can be made using sustainable
convenience without compromise. Join the Mama Bamboo family
