We Set the story straight on some confusing but sommon pregnancy advice. You may of realised the most aggravating aspect of being pregnant isn’t piles or stretch marks. It’s all the conflicting advice. 1. YOU SHOULD EAT FOR TWO If you hoped pregnancy was an excuse to hit the doughnuts, you’ll be disappointed. Sadly, the old saying is very misleading. Under no circumstances should you be eating double your pre-pregnnacy calorie intake, Even if your expecting twins or triplets.Pre-pregnancy women are advised to have an intake of around 2000 calories a day. Fact: - Pregnant women are generally advised to eat 300 more.
2. SUSHI ISN’T SAFE Many mums-to-be think sushi is off the menu. But according to NHS guidelines, it’s considered safe, along with other dishes made with raw fish. Just make sure the fish has been frozen first. Occasionally raw fish, such as salmon contains parasitic worms, which can make you very ill. However freezing kills duch parasites. Smoked salmon doesnt need to be frozen before its used in sushi, because smoking kills any parasites.
3. SEX DURING PREGNANCY COULD HARM YOUR BABY Don’t worry, sex is safe! if you want to get amorous with your other half during pregancy, it’s fine. Your partner’s penis can’t penetrate ebyond your cervix- and your baby won’t know a thing!
4. EATING RARE STEAK IS FINE AS LONG AS IT’S COOKED ON THE OUTSIDE Until fairly recently, experts advised that, as long as steak was seared, it was OK to eat it rare. However, this advice has changed and NHS guidelines state all meat should be cooked throughly.
5. IT’S SAFE TO HAVE A SPRAY TAN DURING PREGNANCY
In comparison to going on a sunbed (which should be avoided whether you’re pregnant or not, due to the increased risj of skin cancer), spray tans propbably seem like a fairly safe option. However experts advise mums-to-be to avoid them completely. This is because of inhaling the spray, which contains chemicals.

6. ALL WOMEN BLOOM IN THE SECOND TRIMESTER Although many women have renewed energy during the second trimester, some unlucky mums don’t experience the fabled ‘Bloom’ especially if nausea, sickness and fatigue continues beyond 20 weeks. If this is you, be kind to yourself.
7. HERBAL TEA IS SAFE TO DRINK You might think herbal teas are harmless, but you should be aware that not much is known about how safe herbal and green teas are during pregnancy. Green tea contains caffeine, so you aren’t meant to have more than four cups a day. Certain herbs, such as rosemary, are not considered safe in high quanities in tea or in aromotheraphy oils (although in small quantities in cooking) because they stimualte the uterus. Also raspberry leaf tea should be avoided until the last weeks of pregnancy.
8. EVERY NEW MUM FEELS AN IMMEDIATE RUSH OF LOVE Depending on your birth experience, you may feel a mixture of shock and exhaustion as well as love. Some women even report feeling detached as they hold this new little person in their arms for the first time. If this happens to you, try not to beat yourself up and accept sometimes bonding takes a little longer.
Dealing with unwanted advice. It can feel overwhelming to be told what you should and shouldn’t be doing during pregnancy, especially if you haven’t asked for guidance. But people often seem to want to offer their ‘Pearls of wisdom’ regardless! A good strategy is to nod politely amd thank the adviser graciously, while making a mental project-baby.co.uk

Weaning GAGGING Your baby may gag when you introduce solid foods. This is because they’re learning to regulate the amount of food they can chew and swallow at one time. If your baby is gagging, this is what may happen:
WHAT TO DO IF MY BABY IS CHOKING
• Your baby’s eyes may water • They might push their tongue forward (or out of their mouth) • To bring the food forward in their mouth —they might make a retching movement, or they may vomit
CHOKING Choking can happen with hard foods, bones and small round foods that can easily get stuck in the throat. Remember, you should:

• Cut small round foods, like grapes and cherry tomatoes, into small pieces, peel the skin off fruit, vegetables and sausages (though remember that sausages can be high in salt).
• Shout for help.

• Support their chest and chin with one hand and with the heel of your hand - give five sharp blows between the shoulder blades.

STORING AND REHEATING FOOD Storing If you’re batch cooking, cool the food down (ideally within one to two hours) and then freeze or refrigerate. If you’re keeping it in the fridge – use it within 2 days. With rice, make sure it cools within an hour and then goes straight in the fridge or freezer. Rice kept in the fridge should be eaten within 24 hours – never reheat it more than once.
Defrosting Defrost frozen food thoroughly before reheating. The safest way to do this is in the fridge overnight, or by defrosting it in the microwave (using the defrost setting).
Reheating When reheating food, make sure it’s steaming hot all the way through, then let it cool before giving it to your baby. If you’re using a microwave, give it a good stir to get rid of any hot air pockets – always check the temperature before feeding your baby. Any cooked food should only be reheated once.
TOP TIP If you need to cool food down quickly, put it in an airtight container and run cold water over it. Keep stirring so it cools throughout.
FOODS TO AVOID It’s important to know which foods are safe for your little one. Here’s a list of which ones to avoid and why:

Getting ReadyFor Weaning
By the time your baby is around 6 months old, they need more than breast milk or infant formula to meet their needs. At this stage they need solid foods as well – not as a replacement, but alongside their usual breast milk or infant formula. Weaning teaches your baby how to move solid food around their mouth, chew and swallow solid foods.
HOW MUCH WILL THEY EAT?
FUSSY EATER?
How much your baby eats depends on their appetite, so let your baby guide you on how much food they need – never force them to eat. In the same way you follow your baby’s cues when offering them breast or bottle feeds, be responsive to your baby when giving them solid foods, and learn to recognise when they’re hungry and when they’ve had enough.
It may take 10 tries or more for your baby to get used to new foods, flavours and textures. There will be days when they eat more, some when they eat less, and then days when they reject everything. Don’t worry – this is perfectly normal. Be patient and keep offering a variety of foods, even the ones they don’t seem to like, and let them get used to it in their own time.
IS THERE A GOOD TIME OF DAY? The best time of day is the one that suits you both, when you don’t feel rushed and your baby is not too tired. Your baby may take to weaning like a duck to water, or it might take them a while – don’t forget, eating is a whole new skill, so lots of smiles, claps and praise please! Allow plenty of time, go at your baby’s pace and stop when they show signs that they’ve had enough.

WHAT YOU NEED – HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS TO GET YOU STARTED:High chair – your baby needs to be sitting safely, in an upright position (so they can swallow properly) Stokke Trip Traps are a double winner as they will last a lifetime. First cup – encourage your baby to sip water from a cup with their meals (instead of a bottle). Open cups or free-flow cups (without a valve) help your baby learn to sip and is better for their teeth. Spoons – soft weaning spoons, usually made of rubber or plastic, are easier on your baby’s gums. Plastic bowls – ideally the ones with a suction base, otherwise they’re likely to end up on the floor! There are so many to choose from, we personally love the bamboo ones. Ice cube trays – very useful for batch cooking and freezing small portions. Nothing fancy required here just a good old fashioned ice cube try. Bibs – LOTS of them. Make sure you have a few so that you can turn it around in the washing machine.

What can you do to solve your sleep problems during pregnancy? Here are some tried-andtrue suggestions: • Don’t rush things • Make sure your baby is sat upright before you begin. • An easy-to-clean high chair is a real benefit when baby-led weaning. During the first few weeks of weaning, it can be helpful to give your baby just one food at a time. Start with very small portions of food when first weaning your baby – even just a couple of teaspoons. Remember that every baby is different. Don’t worry about how much they’re eating at the beginning, as it’s more important for your little one to get used to experiencing different flavours and textures • You can generally give your baby pieces of your ˆordinary family meals, or things you have in the house already, with baby-led weaning.. • A hard aspect of this method of weaning can be relinquishing control. You really have to be able to step back and trust your baby to get on with it. • Try a variety of food and more than once. Avoid focusing on fruit when weaning your baby. Doing so can encourage their taste for sweet foods and make it more difficult to introduce vegetables and other savoury foods later on. • Remember, ‘food is for fun before they’re one’, so see weaning as a sensory experience and messy play for the first few months. Your baby will play with her food at first, but this is an important part of her development. • Baby-led weaning is messy and your baby will enjoy dropping food to see what happens to it. • Give your baby a spoon to play with – lots of parents think that baby-led weaning means spoons are banned, but many babies love feeding themselves with one. . • Be patient – your baby might take a while to get the hang of things, but she’ll get there in the end! project-baby.co.uk

Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep What can you do to solve your sleep problems during pregnancy? Here are some tried-andtrue suggestions: • Avoid caffeine (in all its forms, so put that chocolate bar down) after noon. • Get your eight glasses of water (or other fluids), but taper off at night. • Drink if you’re thirsty, but don’t down a 16-ounce water bottle right before bedtime. • Exercise regularly - during the day or early evening. A daily workout will help you sleep better, but if it comes too close to bedtime, it could actually sabotage sleep (exercise is energising). • Have a light snack before hitting the hay to stave off midnight hunger pangs. Include protein and a complex carb (think cheese and a whole-grain muffin), as well as some warm milk (it really works!) or decaffeinated tea. Besides the duh (avoid caffeine, again in all its forms - sorry, no chocolate with the warm milk), stay away from sugar, which will give you an energy boost when you least want one, and then leave your blood sugar levels wobbly during the night (yet another strike against chocolate). • Take a warm bath just before bed. The soothing and relaxing effects of the bath should help you summon the sandman sooner. • Crack a window - as long as the weather’s comfortable (which for a pregnant woman means anything from 65 degrees on down-way down). The fresh air can be soporific. If the weather’s not cooperative, keep the room comfortably (for you, not your spouse) chilled. Remember, your heat’s up, the thermostat’s should be down. • Make love, if you’re in the mood. Or at least ask your man for a massage - both of which can relax you. • Try some relaxation exercises - visualisation, deep breathing, meditation, or even yoga or chanting before hitting the sack. And actually, counting sheep can work the same way - the monotony of watching those little guys jump over the fence can be truly relaxing (unless you associate them with insomnia). • Leave a night-light on in the bathroom - switching on the overhead is way too much of a wakeup call and will make it much harder to fall back asleep.

For some women, exercise is the last thing on their mind during the first month postpartum. In fact, many obstetricians and midwives suggest waiting four to six weeks after you give birth before beginning to exercise.
1. START POSTPARTUM WORKOUTS SLOWLY Swimming is incredibly effective in working your heart and lungs without putting too much pressure on your joints. For postnatal women, swimming or an aqua aerobics class are effective in adding muscle tone, while providing a gentle exercise that won’t strain your body too much after birth. However, it is advisable to stay clear of

3. POSTPARTUMN PILATES Pilates is one of the most effective pre- and postnatal exercises as it targets the muscles that generally weaken during pregnancy. Exotic Apricots
If the apricots are not in season or are too ripe, choose frozen apricots. They will have as good nutritional qualities as fresh apricots.
METHOD 1. Gently wash the apricots, cut them in half and remove the stone. Cut into 1cm cubes 2. If you have a Babycook, place them in the steamer basket. Pour water into the tank (level 2) and start cooking. Alternatively cook the fruit until soft in a saucepan or regular steamer.
3. Peel the banana and mash without cooking. Place the banana and apricots in a blender. After cooking remove the fruit juice and keep it in a small glass. Mix by adding a part of the cooking liquid until the desired consistency. Add vanilla and mix again.
FOR THE NUTRITION CONSCIOUS The apricot contains very soft fibres which facilitate baby’s intestinal transit. Its delicate, slightly acidy taste, is highlighted by the banana which adds a sugary taste. Never add
sugar to a hot compote as in general the sweet taste is more pronounced when the dessert is at room temperature. If needed, more can be added at the time.

METHOD 1.Peel and chop the sweet potato and apple into 2cm chunks. 2. Remove the outer leaves and any tough stems from the cauliflower and slice into similar-sized pieces. 3.Place everything into a steamer and steam for around 10 minutes, or until cooked through.
Making baby food at 10-12 months – What are my baby’s nutritional needs? At this stage, your baby needs to be obtaining calories from a range of healthy sources. He also needs about twice as much calcium as he did at

There is no right or wrong What’s important is that there is no right or wrong to weaning. Some babies thrive on purees, others on finger foods and yet some on both. Instead of committing to a certain feeding method, it’s ok to be flexible in your approach and to follow your intuition and your baby’s developmental signs.

METHOD 1. Mix flour and baking powder in a bowl. 2. In a separate bowl, mix together yogurt, milk, and egg.

A quick etiquette guide to baby celebrations smart. Baby showers and baby-welcoming ceremonies are filled with joy -- and fraught with expectations. To ensure a good time will be had by all, here are some guidelines for hosts, guests, and parents-to-be.
BABY SHOWERS Baby showers are a relatively recent phenomenon -- they became common only after World War II, during the baby boom of the 1940s and ‘50s. Still, they’ve developed their own traditions and etiquette.
WHO SHOULD HOST A BABY SHOWER? Tradition states that a shower should not be hosted by a close family member of the parents-to-be, but instead by a friend or more distant relative, such as a cousin or an aunt. This rule was meant to avoid the appearance that the family was simply on a mission to collect gifts. However, like many traditions, this rule isn’t strictly observed these days. In fact, it’s usually considered perfectly acceptable for a sister,

mother-in-law, or even the guest of honor’s mother to host or co-host a shower. It’s still unusual for a mother-to-be to host her own shower, though.
WHO SHOULD BE INVITED? Close friends are a natural for the guest list, as are family members. Beyond that, when you’re thinking of adding someone to the list, consider whether it would be appropriate to ask that person to buy a gift for the guest of honor, since that’s what’s expected of a shower guest. WHEN SHOULD THE SHOWER BE HELD? Showers are typically given four to six weeks before the baby’s due date -- late enough so that the pregnancy is well along, but early enough so that the baby is unlikely to arrive before the party day does. Sometimes, for religious, cultural or other reasons, parents-to-be prefer not to receive gifts until after the baby is born (in certain traditions, it’s considered bad luck to acquire baby items beforehand). In that case, you could begin some preliminary planning, but wait until after the baby is born to set a shower date. For parents adopting a child, you might set a date once the child has arrived in their home.

The truth is, there is no right age gap for your family – whatever age gap you end up with, you will find ways of making it work. When trying to decide on an age gap, you will probably find yourself weighing up the pros and cons of each possible scenario, and struggling to decide which one sounds right for you. The thought of adding a new child to the family can sound scary, especially as you worry about how your first child will react. You may feel concerned that you no longer have the energy to run around after a toddler, or that you couldn’t cope with (even more) sleepless nights. A common concern for singleton parents, is whether they will be able to love a second child as much (you will).
THE OLDER CHILD WILL UNDERSTAND
For those of you toying with the idea of the idea of a longer age gap between your children – anything from three years and up – here are some reasons why this is an awesome choice.
An older child will be able to help out with the new baby, and this will be a great opportunity for them to build a strong bond with each other. From running upstairs to grab a clean nappy, to soothing the baby

Your first child is a little older, and may be mature enough to better understand the concept of the new baby. An older child is less likely to feel left out after the arrival of a new sibling. during long car journeys, your first child will have an active role to play in caring for your new child. Older children who read can make great little story tellers, which is a great thing for both siblings!
YOUR OLDER CHILD WILL BE MORE INDEPENDENT With a longer age gap, your first child will be more independent. You won’t need to worry about changing two dirty bottoms throughout the day, because your first child will be able to use the toilet. He may also be able to get himself snacks, and play independently for limited amounts of time.

YOUR OLDER CHILD WILL BE MORE ATTACHED The longer a child remains an only child, the better attached he is to his parents. So the longer you wait before having a second baby, the longer your first child will have to develop a strong attachment to you. Each family situation is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all perfect age gap. You must consider the individual needs of yourself, your partner and your existing children when deciding on when to have your next child. It’s also important to remember, that these things may not always be in our control. It could take longer than expected to conceive.
THE YOUNGER CHILD WILL GET QUALITY TIME TOO
THEY WON’T FIGHT OVER THE SAME TOYS With a larger age gap, your children will have different interests and will play with different toys. This may save you the hassle of acting as mediator, desperately negotiating turns with the most popular toys.
IT WILL SPREAD OUT THE COST OF CHILDCARE Childcare isn’t cheap, and having two children close together can leave some families struggling to afford to pay their nursery bills each month. Two children attending university at the same time can also put a strain on the family purse. By having a larger age gap, you can spread out the costs associated with raising children, especially during those early (and expensive) years.
YOU WON’T HAVE TO DOUBLE UP
Think back to those hazy days when your first child was born. Those long lunches with mum and baby friends, and the long afternoons spent cuddling and feeding on the sofa. A longer age gap will allow you to give the second child the same treatment, though you may have school runs to fit in. Whilst your older child is at school, you will have time for some one-to-one bonding with the newest member of your family.
YOU WILL HAVE CAUGHT UP ON SLEEP Unlike the parents of two under two, you will have caught up on your sleep by the time your next baby arrives. Your first child will be sleeping better, and you should be able to get enough rest during pregnancy. Once the baby arrives, chances are it will only be the newborn keeping you up at night, so you won’t be running between bedrooms trying to soothe everyone.
Your first child will already have outgrown his infant car seats, buggy and playmat. You won’t need to fork out on doubling up on these items, and will instead simply be able to dust off the cobwebs and use them again.
SIBLING RIVALRY IS LESS LIKELY CHILDCARE Children born closer together in age are more likely to experience sibling rivalry. With a larger age gap, your children have different interests, and different focuses at anytime and are less likely to compete over things. An older child may see themselves as a mentor for the younger sibling, rather than as a competitor.
