Choosing The Perfect Running Pram
Top 5 Running Prams & How To Choose The Right One For You
When trying to keep fit and lose weight, motivating yourself to get into a regular exercise plan takes dedication. It can be so easy to find any excuse NOT to get out and hit the pavement. Our Healthy Mummy HQ is full of mummies with young children, so we know how difficult it can be. That is exactly why we have investigated what we think are the top running prams available. There will be no excuse not to head out the door with these beauties. What to look for in a running pram 1. Stability Before purchasing, consider how much time you will be spending running versus walking. The more stable the pram, the more difficult it is to manoeuvre at higher speeds around bends. As a runner, you need to be able to lift the front wheel to turn the pram around the corner. The heavier and more evenly distributed the weight is across all three wheels, the harder this is to achieve. Light weight is more idea for jogging with.
14 l MARCH 2021 l
project-baby.co.uk
2. Lockable Front Wheel If you are going to be using your pram for running then you NEED a wheel that locks in to place. Many offer the option to lock it or allow it to swivel, however with the swivel it can be very dangerous. Even hitting the smallest pebble on the path could send your pram in to an unplanned direction. 3. Hand Brake Having the option of a hand brake allows the runner more control over the pram. This is especially useful for parents who live in hilly areas. You can use the hand brake to help slow your pram down allowing you to maintain form and posture. This makes running much easier than having to lean back acting as the brake and brace for the pram. 4. Sun Shade We all want a sun shade that will cover our children from all directions, especially in the Australian summers. So make sure you check this out and ensure that the sun shade is easily movable so that you can put it in place no matter where the sun.
LIFESTYLE
1. BUGABOO RUNNER Designed with active parents in mind, this pram comes in two versions; as a complete jogging stroller and as an accessory for existing Bugaboo owners, offering an easy, click-and-go jogging extension. In characteristic Bugaboo fashion, you can choose to have the seat facing you, or facing the world. With sun canopy, rain cover and underseat basket, you will be running in true Bugaboo style.
2. BABY JOGGER CITY ELITE This pram is made for the beginner, a more casual jogger rather than an intensive runner. It offers a large sun shade with two windows, air cushioned wheels, front suspension and an optional locking front wheel. A pram that can be used in your day to day life as well as your exercise plan.
3. MOUNTAIN BUGGY TERRAIN For joggers, runners, and errand runners. This pram offers a solution for all of your needs. Allowing parents to use the one pram to cover all of their needs. The Mountain Buggy Terrain has a slim profile, adjustable handle bar, stability for walking, handbrake and is easily collapsable. I haven’t met a Mountain Buggy owner that isn’t a proud owner!
4. PHIL AND TEDS SUB 4 The serious runner with a serious price tag. This streamlined, light weight piece of equipment is built for speed and ease. With some saying it is 50% easier to push than any other running pram. It is built for one hand control allowing for for uncompromised posture. Full suspension, one hand disc brakes, 20″ tyres and a full sunhood. There is no doubt that Phil & Teds have built this pram for hours on the road, ensuring easy use, comfortability for the rider and a successful run.
5. THULE URBAN GLIDE 2 The Thule Urban Glide 2 is a racy little number, that is perfect for both urban mobility and off road or jogging action. Lightweight and with a swivel front wheel for easy manoeuvrability this is a great choice for anyone needing a buggy for a bit of town and country!

MANtenatal
So we brought together a team of experts in all things pregnancy, child birth and parenting and decided to do something about it.
MANtenatal was created by a father of 4 who has attended not one but two full antenatal courses over a 10 year period. On both occasions, the classes were good but they never seemed to give enough focus on men and what they need to be better dads. The other thing he spotted during these courses was the heavy reliance on theory and flipcharts. Parenthood is not about theory or what it says in books… you have to get stuck in and literally get your hands dirty! Yes, that does mean poo… So this is where MANtenatal steps in. Join other guys in a safe environment where nothing is taboo. Ask anything you want, there won’t be any rolling eyes or looks of ‘wait until I get you home’… These classes are designed to help you play your part in becoming the best dad you can be.

PREGNANCY
Sex is
A-OK
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED By BabyCentre Medical Advisory Board
Can i have sex while i’m pregnant?
Absolutely! Most parents-to-be worry about this, but if you have a normal pregnancy, you can keep doing it right up until your waters break. There are lots of psychological and physical benefits of sex so pregnancy is not a reason to stop. And you may find that being free from worries about conception and contraception, you feel sexier than ever. Some researchers even think that women who have regular sex during pregnancy may be less likely to give birth prematurely. Having orgasms may also be related to a lower chance of giving birth early.
If you’re feeling sexy and well enough, then it’s a good thing to keep your sex life going throughout pregnancy. Having satisfying sex during this time is good for your relationship and your sense of wellbeing, both now and after your baby has arrived.

l MARCH 2021 l 19
PREGNANCY
WILL SEX HARM MY BABY? Fear of hurting your baby can be one of the most common reasons to avoid sex during pregnancy. You won’t hurt your baby by making love, even with your partner on top. The thick mucus plug that seals your cervix helps guard against infection. The amniotic sac and the strong muscles of your womb (uterus) also protect your baby. If you orgasm, you may notice your baby moves around more. However, this is because of your pounding heart, not because he knows what’s happening or feels discomfort.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I SHOULDN’T HAVE SEX? Your midwife or GP may advise you not to have sex if you have experienced: • bleeding • abdominal pains or cramps • broken waters • a history of cervical weakness • a low-lying placenta (placenta praevia), particularly if you have had some bleeding Although there isn’t strong evidence that sex will make these conditions worse, many doctors will advise you to avoid sex as a precaution.
20 l MARCH 2021 l
project-baby.co.uk
You may also be advised to avoid sex during pregnancy if your partner has genital herpes. If you catch genital herpes for the first time during pregnancy there’s a small risk that it could affect your developing baby. Frequent sex (more than three times a week) can trigger bladder urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly if they are something you’re prone to. Untreated UTIs can cause problems in pregnancy. If you suspect you have a UTI, you should see your doctor or midwife as soon as possible to have your urine checked. Washing before and after sex (remembering to wash from front to back), and emptying your bladder after sex will help to reduce the likelihood of infection. As long as it’s not uncomfortable, you can still have sex if you get a vaginal infection but your partner should wear a condom to ensure he doesn’t become infected too.
WILL SEX FEEL AS GOOD DURING PREGNANCY? It depends. It’s better for some women, not as good for others. Increased blood flow to your pelvic area during pregnancy can cause your genitals to engorge, and heighten sexual sensation. But some
women report that this leaves them with an uncomfortable full feeling after intercourse ends. Many women find that their clitoris is slightly less sensitive during pregnancy or that their orgasms are less powerful. It’s also fairly common for women to say they can’t reach orgasm as easily while they’re carrying a baby. Some mums-to-be find sex painful during pregnancy. This is particularly the case when penetration is deep. Adopting sexual positions where penetration is shallow or under your control (see below) is the best solution.
You may experience abdominal cramps after having an orgasm, as this can set off a wave of contractions. This is particularly noticeable in the third trimester. It can be off-putting, but wait a few minutes and the tightening of your womb will ease, just as with Braxton Hicks contractions. During pregnancy many couples find that they feel more pleasure from foreplay, oral sex, sex toys or masturbation than from intercourse. So although you may change the way you have sex during pregnancy, it doesn’t mean you’ll be less satisfied!
PREGNANCY
I’VE GONE OFF SEX SINCE PREGNANT. IS THIS NORMAL? Yes! The big changes in your body and your life are bound to alter your sex life. Some women are just too tired or feel too nauseous to make love, especially in the first trimester. Mood changes, backache and sore breasts are some of the other reasons for a diminished interest in sex. Hormonal changes can also cause a loss of libido. If you suffer from gestational diabetes then you may find that you feel like having less sex or don’t enjoy it quite as much. Not surprisingly, your state of mind is another factor. If you feel positive about your pregnancy and the changes your body is undergoing, you’re likely to feel more sexual. But if you’re not particularly happy about the pregnancy or feel insecure about your growing tummy or other issues, this can have a negative effect. Even if you enjoyed sex during the first part of your pregnancy your sex drive can wane in the third trimester as birth, labour and your belly loom large. Many mums-to-be simply feel unattractive or worried about whether their partner is satisfied sexually. At any stage of pregnancy, though, there are wide variations in how women feel and how sexually active couples are. What’s normal for one person won’t necessarily be the same for you.
WILL MY PARTNER’S SEX DRIVE CHANGE NOW THAT I’M PREGNANT? It might. It’s not uncommon for men to feel less interested in sex, especially in the third trimester. This doesn’t mean that your partner doesn’t find you attractive any more. Some men are even turned on more by their partners being pregnant. Common reasons for lack of desire in dads-to-be include: • fears that sex can hurt the baby • worries about the health of you and your unborn baby • feelings of apprehension about the burdens of parenthood • self-consciousness about making love in the presence of your unborn child
WHICH SEXUAL POSITIONS ARE THE MOST COMFORTABLE DURING PREGNANCY? As your pregnancy progresses, you may find that the missionary position (man on top) isn’t comfortable any more. Try the following instead: • Get on top! This position has been shown to be associated with higher levels of sexual satisfaction in pregnant women. It puts no weight on your abdomen and allows you to control the depth of penetration. Straddle your partner while he’s lying down and sit either facing him or facing the other way. This position also allows him to reach your breasts or stimulate your clitoris to help you orgasm. • Use the bed as a prop. Lie on your back at the edge of the bed with your knees bent, and your bottom and feet perched at the edge of the mattress. Your partner can either kneel or stand in front of you. • Lie side-by-side in the spoons position. This allows your partner to keep most of his weight off your bump. Rest your top leg over his or place it on a few pillows in front of you. This allows for only shallow penetration so it’s ideal if deep thrusts have become more uncomfortable. If your bump isn’t yet big enough to get in the way, you can also turn around and face your partner in this position. • Get on to your hands and knees in the doggy position. This is a good position for later on in your pregnancy when it’s a relief to have weight taken off your back and pelvis. You can also get your partner to reach around and stimulate your clitoris. Penetration can be quite deep in this position. If you find it uncomfortable, ask your partner to thrust less deeply. Getting him to hold a pillow between your bottom and his lower tummy will prevent him pushing too far inside you. • Sit on your partner. This is another position that puts no weight on your womb (uterus). Try sitting on your partner’s lap as he sits on a (sturdy) chair. You can control the rate and depth of penetration by standing up more or by squatting down. This position allows for lots of kissing, cuddling and eye contact. You can also take it easy and let your partner do all the moving. Just take a little of your weight off his thighs first. • Have sex standing up. Lean over a low counter or table with your partner standing behind you. This takes the pressure off your back and pelvis and lets your partner reach around and stimulate your clitoris at the same time. • Sit on a table or counter. With your partner standing in front of you, wrap your legs around his body for a more intimate experience. Pop a cushion under your bottom to make yourself more comfortable. If you’re in your third trimester you
You can have satisfying sex when pregnant, and where there’s a will, there’s a way! Our slideshow of sex positions during pregnancy will inspire you and your partner to find techniques that work. And keep talking. Communication and openness are the keys to maintaining or

8 Point action plan to help cope with Colic Many babies are diagosed with colic, but in reality there is no medical definition for the term. Colic defined as excessive reasons for bouts of inconsolable crying, such as reflux, digestive intolerances or allergies. In most cases, a combination of diet, feeding, medicine, routine and sleep can help manage the symptoms.
1 UNDERSTAND COLIC
3. LET HIM SUCK
“Colic is poorly understood, it’s not an actual medical condition, but just a term for excessive, frequent crying in a baby who appears to be otherwise healthy and well fed. It can occur for no reason, but it often has an underlying cause, such as non specific abdominal pain, cow’s milk introlerance or reflux- where the valve at the top of the stomach is immature, leading to acid pain and vomiting,
“Babies with colic often get a lot of comfort from sucking, which is likely to be why they want to feed so often, to try to stretch the feeding time you could try to temporarily introduce a dummy. This will soothe and give him something to suck on while you’re trying to implement the new, more structured, feeding plan.
2. GET INTO A REGULAR FEEDING ROUTINE “The first thing to tackle with a colicky or reflux baby is their routine. If your little one is eating too much and too often: breastfeeding on deman, and typically feeds every two hours during the day and almost contantly at night. This could be contribuiting to his symptoms. During the day, try to stretch him out to a three-hour feeding schedule, which means feeding him five times during the 12 daylight hours.”

4. CALM CONSISTANT BEDTIMES “Evenings are typically the hardest time for babies with colic, and and they’re especially difficult when you’re trying to get your older children into a bath and bed. A calming evening routine will help the baby to wind down and feel soothed at his most difficult time of day, so begin to implement a soothing bedtime regime that coincides with the needs of your two older children, who go to bed around 7pm”
HEALTH
5. SHIFT POSITIONS Parents tend to cradle a colicky baby face-up, but that may not help. Instead, hold her face down -- with your hand under her belly and her head on your forearm. The pressure on her tummy can help relieve uncomfortable gas.
6. BABY MASSAGE The soothing power of your own touch can work wonders on a colicky baby. Many babies love skin-to-skin contact. And studies show infants who are massaged seem to cry less and sleep better. Just undress your baby and use slow, firm strokes over her legs, arms, back, chest, and face. It may calm you down as well.
For a gassy baby, rub his tummy in a clockwise motion, or bicycle his little legs to relieve some pressure.
7. GIVE HER A BURP A crying baby can gulp down a lot of air. That can make her gassy and bloated -- and make her crying worse. Burp her with gentle thumps on her back. The classic position -- with the baby’s head over your shoulder -- works, but can leave a trail of spit-up down your back. Switch things around: Lay your baby face down across your lap, or sit her up. Support her chest and neck with one of your arms.
8. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF One of the most important pieces of advices we can give you, is to make time for yourself. Colic can be tough on mums as well as babies and it can be exhausting and stressful. Sleep when you can and accept all offers of help. Whatever you do - don’t blame yourself or feel you are not doing an amazing job.
AND DON”T FORGET
Take a Breather Night after night with a colicky baby is hard on parents. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and not up to the job. If nothing seems to work, take a break. Hand the baby off to your partner, a family member, friend, or sitter. When that’s not an option, remember that it’s OK to let your baby cry in the crib for a little bit while you collect yourself.
Whisbear Over 65% newborn children suffer from colic. In result, parents suffer too. To soothe the baby we turn to “home-made” solutions to stop the colic. Eventually we all arrive to the same conclusion hairdryer’s shushing sound works the best! Shushing is the natural acoustic environment for newborn children - they remember it from their mother’s womb. All they can hear there is shushing. Running around your house with a hairdryer is uncomfortable and tiring and although recordings of shushing can be found on the Internet, it is not an ideal solution. And thus Whisbear - the humming bear - was born. Friendly shushing in hand’s reach is our parental mission! Whisbear is a superhero - always near your child, it comes to the rescue! Whisbear guards the baby’s sleep. Whisbear is something more than a shushing teddy bear. They are a great plan to help suffering little ones and their parents in the colic-induced pain. Project Baby Review:- Not only does he look ultra cute we also saw a huge difference in our little ones sleep pattern. He is super clever and will help many parents through those tricky first few months. At £39.90 its a little more expensive than your average Teddy Bear but Whisbear is different and you can’t put a price on a good night sleep. www.whisbear.co.uk

DON’T FORGET Think about how much you’d like to spend. Bear in mind the price per use! Your baby will be eating here up to 3 times per day during the first year and 5-6 times per day during their second and third years. So, it’s worth investing in the right one. However, paying more doesn’t always mean better. You can get good highchairs across all price ranges and you may even pick up a bargain second-hand.
CHILDHOME EVOLU ONE.80 HIGHCHAIR By simply turning the high chair Evolu ONE.80, you can easily change your child’s perspective. Without having
to lift the chair, you can turn your little gourmet into your direction and feed your baby. This super convenient and comfortable high chair can be turned by 90° to the right or to the left, respectively.
The iCandy MiChair grows with your child from their first few days. The optional Pod turns the MiChair into a low level rocker or a higher seat to keep your baby at your level. The iCandy Pod simply docks on to the highchair to bring baby up and away from the ground, to parent height when feeding. This is ideal for parents with back pain or for sitting your baby at the dinner table. The Pod can also be used as a rocker on the floor with two height positions, one for rest and one for play. The highchair is not just a beautifully crafted piece of authentic furniture design, it is feature laden making life for parent easy and an extremely comfortable one for baby. As your child grows older, the MiChair can be used as a highchair with the tray. A removable padded insert is available in a choice of colours.
TRIPP TRAPP The Stokke® Tripp Trapp® features unique adjustability of the seat and footrest height and depth enabling the Tripp Trapp® to adapt to your child as they grow, ensuring that your child sits comfortably at all times. PREGNANCY
Birthing Trends in 2021 Modern mums are taking charge of their labour like never before! From natural pain relief to after-birth care, read on to find out the top pregnancy trends for 2021
HYPNOBIRTHING
HOME BIRTH
While we have to admit it initially gave us visions of Derren Brown in a pair of hospital scrubs, self-hypnosis in childbirth is becoming a popular choice for expectant mums. Popularised by Fearne Cotton, who called hypnobirthing “the most intense and euphoric experience ever” following the birth of her second child Honey, hypnobirthing involves specific self-hypnosis and breathing techniques designed to apparently guide you through labour without severe pain. Sounds ideal! Hypnobirthing advocates say the key to a calm and relaxing birth is taking full control of your birth experience, taking the hard work out of labour.
Until relatively recently, home birth was the most common choice for expectant mothers. Long acknowledged to be a safe choice for low-risk mothers-to-be, it’s often associated with fewer interventions during labour and a quicker recovery time. Despite this, last year just 2.7% of births in the UK happened at home, compared to 30% in the Netherlands. Researchers think home birth is likely to get more popular in the coming years as women chose to give birth in an environment they know with a midwife on hand to help. Just don’t forget to prepare plenty of towels!
EATING YOUR PLACENTA You can dry it and have it made into pill form, you can fry it with onions or just eat it raw in the delivery room… Yes, as strange as it might seem, following a number of celebrity mums speaking out about the benefits it holds, eating your placenta (placentophagy) has become one of the more unexpected pregnancy trends for 2016. Supporters tell us that eating your placenta can help to raise your energy and breast milk quantity, as well as lowering the risks of postpartum depression and insomnia. Unfortunately these claims haven’t been fully tested yet, but experts are actively studying the benefits it might hold. We think we’ll stick to our vitamin pills…

PREGNANCY
LOTUS BIRTHING The latest all-natural birth trend, lotus birthing involves leaving your little one’s umbilical cord attached until it naturally falls away, which can take up to 10 days after birth. The non-traditional practice has been said to help boost your baby’s blood volume and immune system in the days after birth. Other mums have chosen the more common method of delayed cord clamping, where the umbilical cord isn’t cut until after the cord pulsations have ceased or the placenta has been delivered. Research suggests that delayed cord clamping can let your newborn receive up to 30% more oxygenated blood and stem cells from the placenta. If you’re interested, discuss it with your midwife at your next appointment to see if this is an option for you.

Myth: You can control when and how long your newborn sleeps.
Reality: There’s no proof that this method has any impact on Baby’s sleep.
Reality: Newborn babies fall asleep when they’re ready and wake up when they’re hungry, wet, or upset or because of some other normal cue.

death syndrome, healthy babies should always be put to sleep on their back -- not their stomach or sides. Dr. Adesman Explains: “Part of the reason for the confusion is that when the government first came out with its ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign, it said side or back, but just a couple years later, it modified this recommendation because sometimes babies roll from their side onto their belly. The safest sleep position for babies is on their back. Unfortunately, some pediatricians are still giving parents misinformation.”
NAP = SOUNDLY SLEEPING BABY Myth: A nap in a car seat or stroller doesn’t count. Reality: If your child is sleeping soundly, it counts. Dr. Adesman Explains: “Kids are pretty versatile when it comes to where they sleep. If a baby falls asleep somewhere other than his crib, there’s really no reason to transfer him. Also, remember that although beautiful nurseries might be created with the best intentions, crib bumpers, mobiles, and other decorations can pose a safety risk to infants.” project-baby.co.uk

KEEPING THEM CLOSE Unborn babies enjoy the ultimate luxury – twenty hours of sleep a day! Cocooned in our stomachs they are comforted by the sounds of our heartbeat, gurgles of our tummies and the soft tones of our voices. They are fed constantly, and so naturally they sleep a lot. Don’t we all curl up on the sofa for an afternoon nap after Sunday lunch!?
O
ur babies are so used to us by the time they are born, that being separated from us comes as a big shock. The first three months of a baby’s life are now often referred to as the ‘fourth trimester’, and understandably it’s a period when babies want to be especially close to their parents, and parents want to keep them close too. It’s no surprise that infant co-sleeping was the absolute norm all over the world until Western society started separating newborns by putting them in their own cribs or rooms to sleep. Keeping a newborn baby close is instinctive to most mothers, and many fret at the thought of trying to put their baby down to sleep alone. Of course, we are now more aware of the potential dangers of bed sharing, but it’s not always as clear-cut when you are suffering from lack of sleep and baby won’t settle anywhere except by your side. For many parents it is a real dilemma, in fact a recent survey by organic brand The Little Green Sheep discovered that over ¾ of parents had shared a bed with their baby, but 60% had worried about it.
Moses basket or bedsharing are no longer the only choices, finally there is a solution for new parents who want to keep their baby close. In the past two years there has been a surge in Bedside Cribs that attach to the bed to give babies a separate space to sleep in that is still right next to mum. They last longer than Moses Baskets too, perfect for the first six months when you’ll be feeding through the night.

REAL LIFE
IS BREAST ALWAYS BEST By Mary Ashton, Our Resident Maternity Expert
If you’ve just started breastfeeding, you’re doing the right thing for you and your baby. But if breastfeeding doesn’t come naturally at first, don’t worry. Plenty of new mums and babies have to practise and persevere until they get the hang of it.
IS IT TRUE THAT BREAST IS BEST?
Y
es, breast milk is the best food for your baby. It’s the healthiest way to feed her. Breast milk is a complete food. It contains at least 400 nutrients, as well as hormones and disease-fighting compounds, that aren’t present in formula milk. Its nutritional make-up even adjusts to your baby’s needs as she grows (Inch 2006). Feeding your baby only breast milk for up to six months (exclusive breastfeeding) is particularly good for her. It can improve your baby’s cognitive development (Iacovou and Sevilla-Sanz 2010, Kramer et al 2008). So being breastfed could even make her more intelligent.
Babies who are exclusively breastfed from birth are also much less likely to be ill in their first year of life (Kramer and Kakuma 2012, Ladomenou et al 2010). Being breastfed may help your baby to fend off illnesses such as: Gastroenteritis Pneumonia and bronchiolitis Ear infections (Ip et al 2007, Kramer and Kakuma 2012, Quigley et al 2007, Unicef and DH 2010)

REAL LIFE
We can’t say that exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of children ever developing eczema (Flohr et al 2011, Kramer and Kakuma 2012, NHS Choices 2011). But babies who are breastfed for any period of time do tend to have lower rates of severe eczema than babies who were always formula-fed (Flohr et al 2011). It’s also possible that breast feeding delays when your child first develops eczema (Greer et al 2008).
Breastfeeding helps to build a special bond between you and your baby. And in the long-term, breastfeeding may help your baby to stay healthy. Studies have shown that adults who were breastfed as babies, when compared with those who were formula-fed: Had lower blood pressure, Had lower cholesterol levels, Were less likely to become obese, Were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes (Horta et al 2007, Robinson and Fall 2012). Breastfeeding is good for you, too, and may help you to lose weight (Unicef and DH 2010). In the long term, it also helps to: lower your risk of breast cancer, protect against ovarian cancer before the menopause, reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes (Ip et al 2007)
HOW LONG WILL I BE BREASTFEEDING FOR? The Department of Health recommends that your baby has only breast milk for the first six months of her life. It also recommends that you carry on breastfeeding after your baby has started on solid foods, until the end of her first year and beyond, if you’d like to (WHO 2002, Unicef and DH 2010). Continuing to breastfeed while introducing solid foods to your baby may benefit her immune system. She may also be less likely to develop health conditions such as coeliac disease (Henriksson et al 2013) and type 1 diabetes (Agostoni et al 2008). Most mums aim to breastfeed for between three months and 12 months, and some choose to breastfeed beyond the first year (extended breastfeeding). A lot depends on your individual circumstances and how you feel about it.

How can I prepare for breastfeeding? Staying healthy is as much as you can do to prepare your body for breastfeeding. But learning as much as you can about breastfeeding before your baby is born will help you when the time comes. Read how to prepare for breastfeeding, and encourage your partner to learn about it too, so he’s ready to support you.
HOW DO I START BREASTFEEDING? Feeds can take anything from five minutes to 40 minutes, so find a comfortable place before you start. In the early days of breastfeeding, when you're still trying to get the hang of it, creating the right atmosphere is important. If you're easily distracted by noise, find somewhere quiet. If you tend to get bored, you may want to feed with the radio or television on, but only if breastfeeding is going well. Try different spots until you find what works for you. Hold your baby in a position that won't make your arms and back ache. Have cushions or pillows nearby to support you or your baby. Laid-back breastfeeding involves lying on your back, so that your baby can rest on your body, while your hands are free to support her. Or try the cradle hold, which means cradling your baby across your chest, raised up on a cushion or pillow. It depends on what's most comfortable for you. Get yourself and your baby in a relaxed position before you start feeding. Pay attention to how your breasts feel when your baby latches on. She should take in a big mouthful of breast tissue. If you have large breasts, you may find it more comfortable to lie on your side while feeding, or you may want to try holding your baby under your arm in a rugby ball position. If latching on hurts, break the suction by gently inserting your little finger between your baby's gums and your nipple, and try again. Once your baby latches on properly, she'll be able to do the rest.
HOW EASY IS BREASTFEEDING? Though some women take to breastfeeding easily, many new mums find it hard to get going. So if you're feeling discouraged, you're not alone. Talk to your community midwife, or ask to be referred to a breastfeeding specialist, if you're having problems. She can watch you feed your
baby, and suggest ways to make it easier. The National Childbirth Trust, La Leche League and The Breastfeeding Network can put you in touch with skilled supporters. Breastfeeding takes practise, and is a skill that you and your baby will be learning from scratch. Give yourself as much time as you need to get it down to a fine art. Take it a day, a week, or even just one feed, at a time. If you're having a bad feeding day, tell yourself that tomorrow will be better, and that any problems you are having are likely to pass. By the time of your postnatal check, you'll probably be breastfeeding without giving it a second thought. If not, ask for support.
CAN I BREASTFEED IN PUBLIC? You may feel shy about breastfeeding in front of other people. But you have the right to breastfeed in public places in England, Scotland and Wales (MA 2012a). The rules differ slightly in Northern Ireland (NCT 2010), but you have some protection under the Sex Discrimination Act.
You may feel comfortable about breastfeeding in front of others. However if you feel self-conscious, there are tops that allow you to breastfeed discreetly. Shirts that you have to unbutton will make you feel exposed as you feed, and buttons are fiddly to deal with. Stretchy tops you can pull up work well. If it makes you feel more comfortable, drape a scarf, muslin or blanket over your shoulder and chest while you feed. This will give you and your baby privacy. Make sure your baby can breathe easily, though. Some larger shops have mum-and-baby rooms where you can sit comfortably and feed, and local councils also provide information about where you are welcome to breastfeed. Breastfeeding your baby when she’s hungry is your first priority, so try not to feel self-conscious about doing what’s best for her.
REAL LIFE
WHAT SHOULD I BUY FOR BREASTFEEDING? Buy at least two or three comfortable breastfeeding or nursing bras so your breasts are properly supported. These have hooks or zips that you can easily undo when your baby needs to feed. Make sure that your bras fit properly, and that any flaps open completely. If only a small part of your breast is exposed, the bra may press on breast tissue and lead to blocked ducts or mastitis (Mohrbacher and Stock 2003). You may prefer to wait to buy bras until after your baby is born, to make sure that they will fit you perfectly. But bear in mind that getting out of the house with a newborn isn’t easy, so think about going in late pregnancy. Many department stores have staff who are trained
to fit nursing bras after 36 weeks of pregnancy.
breastfeed her as usual (MA 2012b).
You may find that your breasts have a tendency to leak, as even another baby’s cry or the sight of a baby can stimulate milk flow. Keep a supply of washable or disposable breast pads handy, and consider buying a light-weight nursing bra for night time, so you can wear breast pads while you sleep. If you’re planning to express your breast milk, you may want to consider buying a breast pump.
If you can’t visit your baby during the day, you may want to express milk. Or you may choose to breastfeed only when you are with your baby, and give her formula milk during the day (MA 2012b) (mixed feeding).
CAN I BREASTFEED AFTER I GO BACK TO WORK? If you’re going back to work, it doesn’t mean you have to stop breastfeeding. If your workplace has a nursery, you may be able to visit your baby during the working day, and
Let your employer know in writing if you want to breastfeed after you return to work, so a risk assessment can be carried out. This is to make sure that your workplace is safe for a breastfeeding mum. It’s good news for employers, too. Mums who are supported to carry on breastfeeding after they return to work take less time off (Click 2006). And some research suggests that exclusively breastfed babies are less likely to be ill than babies who are formula-fed (Click 2006, Kramer and Kakuma 2012, Ladomenou et al 2010).

7 Ways
to Lose your
PREGNANCY WEIGHT
Avoid these post-baby weight gaining situations and you’ll shift those extra pounds
By Andrea Cottee www.madeformums.com
Lapping up my childrens’ leftovers, eating chocolate ‘for energy’ and grabbing on-the-go foods have seen me pile on the weight even after pregnancy. I should be slipping into skinny jeans by now – my youngest is over 2 years old. But it’s all literally gone pear-shaped since I became a mum. “Time, or rather lack of it, is a huge issue facing mums,” says life coach Lynette Allen. “Once you have children, they become your priority, and their eating habits concern you more than your own. It’s quick and easy to satisfy your hunger with unhealthy fixes that put on weight.”

HEALTH & FITNESS
Here are the danger zones to avoid, to help you lose that leftover pregnancy weight.
DANGER ZONE 3: Eating your baby’s food
DANGER ZONE 1: Breastfeeding binges
There’s no harm to be had from your baby’s pure fruit and vegetable purees but scoffing her snacks can hinder your weight loss. Yes, even if they are organic!
One of the first presents I received on becoming a mum was a bar of chocolate. It was big. The length of my 6lb 12oz newborn in fact. “You’ll need it for feeding,” said my friend Jo. “It’ll increase the calcium in your milk.” True? Or just the start of a serious weight-inducing habit? “There are certainly more nutritious ways to up your calcium intake, like nibbling on cheese cubes or eating a natural yogurt,” says nutritional therapist Sally Gordon.
“Unlike chocolate, which gives you a buzz and then a crash, these sugar-free snacks help sustain your energy levels, meaning you’ll crave less food.” “Stockpile healthy snacks that are easy to grab before you’re stuck on the sofa feeding,” adds Lynette. “A little preparation can stop a lot of extra weight going on.”
DANGER ZONE 2: Caffeine Personally, I believe all new parents should be immediately hooked up on coffee drips to combat fatigue. But according to the experts, caffeine plays havoc with our blood sugar, lowering levels and causing cravings. And adding sugar messes with your metabolism, too. “Instead, try whizzing up a fresh fruit, live yogurt and skimmed milk smoothie to keep in the fridge. You’ll get a sweet but nutrient-rich boost when you need it,” says nutritional therapist Sally. Distraction can work wonders too. “A lot of eating is habit,” says life coach Lynette. “Creating another ritual that doesn’t involve food avoids weight gain.”
“I can’t get enough of Katie’s rusks!” confesses Jo, 28, mum to Katie, 7 months. “They make me feel like a child again – until I clock my ballooning belly in the mirror!” “There’s a lot of nostalgia in eating,” admits Lynette. “Certain foods remind us of happy times, but comfort eating can play havoc with your figure. Next time you eat, ask yourself, ‘Am I really hungry? Why am I eating this?’” If you’re bored or stressed, work on changing your moods, rather than using food to lift them.”
DANGER ZONE 6: Home baking Cooking may be great for bonding with your toddler, but baking cakes can be rubbish for your figure – especially if you’re in the habit of over-catering. “Make sure that you only cook what you should reasonably eat in that day,” says Lynette. “Or if you make too much, give one of your neighbours a treat by packaging up any extra cakes and dropping them round.” Again, baking wholegrain rather than white treats is better for your digestion and energy levels, so look for the healthiest recipes you can find.
We’re not saying don’t snack, just make it healthy.
DANGER ZONE 4: Coffee mornings Granted, swapping stories with other mums is a healthy thing to do, but filling your face with pastry items while you do it isn’t.
DANGER ZONE 7: Supermarket habits If your pre-schooler’s pester power has you giving in and topping up your trolley with bags of sugary snacks or crisps, you need to change your shopping habits to lose weight.
“It’s hard to have coffee without biscuits, but because they’re high in sugar and crammed with refined carbohydrates, they hamper your energy levels and digestive system,” says nutritional therapist Sally Gordon.
“Having unhealthy snacks in the house only brings temptation, so buy individual
“Wholegrain varieties, such as muffins or oatcakes, are a much better option. They release energy at a slower rate so you need to eat less throughout the day.”
“I keep my kids’ treats in a tin with a picture of me at my slimmest on the lid,”
DANGER ZONE 5: Baby mealtime
treats, one at a time,” says Lynette. And if you do have them at home, keep a few antisnacking tricks up your sleeve.
says Jenny, 34, mum to Ryan, 2, and Freya, 4. “Now, whenever I get the urge to tuck in, the picture reminds me of how I want to look and it stops me from snacking.”
Do you pick at your baby’s mealtime leftovers? “You don’t need extra calories if you’re not pregnant or breastfeeding,” says life coach Lynette Allen. Admittedly, it’s hard to let perfectly good food go to waste, but eating out of guilt won’t help your waistline. And it could carry on past the baby phase and into toddlerhood. “Betsy’s leftovers are such a temptation I squirt washing-up liquid over them when she’s finished,” says Lisa, 29, mum to Betsy, 2,“Unsurprisingly, it’s stopped me picking!”

READING
DADDY 75% of fathers don’t read to their children. They don’t know what they’re missing, says Charlie Swinbourne.
Every family has a bedtime routine, and we are no different. At around 6.15pm every night, it begins. Our daughters have their bath, brush their teeth, get their pyjamas on, and then, usually after a number of protests and appeals, they finally agree to settle into bed ready for my wife and I to read them their stories. Reading with them is really important to us. Our daughters are four and two years old, and because they’re both into different books, we swap who we read to every night. Martha, four, is currently into Horrid Henry tales. Meanwhile, Edie, two, loves The Tiger Who Came To Tea. Our evenings have been like this for nearly three years so, until recently, I thought reading to my girls every night was perfectly normal – that all dads do it. But it turns out I am in the minority, because according to Booktrust, only one in eight fathers reads with his children. Its statistics show that in 25 per cent of cases, this is because fathers work late, and I must confess, the fact that I work from home makes my nightly commitment to telling tales a lot easier. But what about the other 75 per cent? Interviews showed that one of the main reasons some fathers don’t read with their kids is because they see reading as a female – the mother’s – domain. These findings are worrying, because fathers reading with their children has been proven to boost academic success, and leads to improved social and emotional wellbeing. Booktrust is running a campaign called Get Dads Reading as a result. So what do I see as the benefits of reading with my kids? First, after all the playful chaos

of the day, I find reading with my girls a special, calm time. Because I read with them one-to-one, it’s a rare occasion when they have my full focus, and I have theirs, without any of life’s distractions. Stories also give my girls their first stepping stones to understanding the world outside our home. We learn about the human condition through stories, and it’s no less true for children. By stealth, stories place them in other people’s shoes, and help them empathise with others – even it’s just a frightened mouse trying to survive the attentions of the Gruffalo! As well as teaching them about the wider world, reading to my children has taught them about me, and me about them. Through our nightly routine, I know what my girls find funny or sad. I find out what they don’t know and get the chance to explain words and concepts to them as we go along. You could say reading to them helps me see things through their eyes.
Because I’ve read with them, I find I can explain other areas of life more easily. When I told them recently about a relative who is moving house to get more room, I only had to reference Julia Donaldson’s book A Squash And A Squeeze to help them understand. There are so many good reasons for fathers to read with their children. For me, the biggest of all is that it’s made us closer. That’s something that can’t be bought – it comes from the time we spend day in, day out, travelling to magical worlds together.

Mum Tip “Use a soft weaning spoon they’re nice and small so you can try little teeny spoonfuls at first.”
HappyEating A survey, launched by leading baby food brand Organix, reveals that one of the biggest barriers to introducing new foods during weaning is baby’s facial expression in response to new tastes. It can be challenging to introduce new foods during weaning and the faces babies pull can be interpreted by parents as disgust or dislike at what they are trying, which can make it all the harder. The Organix weaning survey reveals: • More than half (55%) of mums say a baby’s facial expression puts them off trying to encourage their baby to like a new taste and flavour. • 49% say it’s a struggle to keep babies interested in food. • 42% say they find it hard to get babies to try new foods during weaning. From sweet carrot to sour lemon and bitter broccoli, weaning is the beginning of a taste adventure, the first opportunity for your baby to explore and experience taste sensations. Evidence shows that it can take between 10 and 15 times to introduce a new food or flavour and that learning about food is all about familiarity and repetition. So by understanding more about their babies’ facial expressions, parents are likely to feel more confident about introducing new foods. Baby faces and understanding what they mean … But what is the meaning of that face your baby pulls as they try a new food for the first time? What’s your baby really trying to tell you?
Mum Tip “Keep trying - if your little one rejects a new food, offer it again in a few days’ time. If they still say no, try again in a few weeks’ time”
“For example, what mums and dads might interpret as a look of shock or disgust, doesn’t necessarily translate as not liking the taste, what’s more likely is that baby is puzzled by the intensity of a new flavour. A surprised expression could be curiosity about the depth of flavour, the chances are they think the flavour is good but it’s very different to what they’ve eaten before – it’s all part of them experiencing and learning new tastes on their weaning journey.” It can be challenging to keep offering new foods and coming up with new and inspiring ideas to tempt little ones, but it’s important as those first tastes during weaning help define a child’s future relationship with food.
Weaning is an exciting time for everyone so for lots more weaning advice, weaning recipes - from purées to finger foods - and to download your free copy of the Organix Little Book of Weaning please visit www.organix.com or follow #realfoodface
