y the time you have this edition in your hand there will be just 5 days left of the Summer Holidays, yippee I hear you all say! You shipped them off to summer camp now ship them back to school.
Trying to work and keep an 8 year old happy during the holidays is no easy task, you need patience, a very healthy bank balance and a masters degree in time management, unfortunately I have none of the above. We have enjoyed ourselves though, we attended the Lollibop Festival which seems to get bigger and better each year, we helped Their Nibs celebrate their Birthday and we embarked on a short camping trip where we managed to find two of the rainiest days in July, fun! Speaking of shipping them back to school, If you still haven’t thought about that dreaded back to school essential list and you are wondering what to buy and what you really need to buy, we have a few ideas on page 66, and if you want to make the journey to and from school a little more stress free we have three Micro Scooters to give away (competition on page 42). If like me you walk to school they are a godsend, no more “come on Henry” “Henry walk faster we are going to be late” now it’s “can you wait for me please”. This edition is jam packed with interesting, fun and essential information for all you mums, dads, grandparents and carers across London and beyond. If the word ‘adorable’ isn’t always a term you would use to describe your little ones, with ‘little Rascals’ often being a closer portrayal, how do you manage this? Do you shout? Do you cry? Send them to the naughty step? Or do you blissfully ignore it? Kathryn Mews points us in the right direction on page 53 with her article on Tough Love, and if you ever find yourself on a Saturday morning thinking there just isn’t anything to do today, well shame on you, as we live in a city where you can guarantee close by, or maybe a short drive, or train journey away there is an abundance of fantastic days out to choose from. We have made it even easier for you with our Top 10 Family Days Out special on page 57. As always, we hope you have a lovely time reading this edition. Grab a cup of tea and a slice of lemon drizzle cake (my favourite) and put your feet up, after a long summer holiday you deserve it! See you on the next edition. Christmas! Yoga is an ideal pre and post-natal exercise. It increases energy, relieves muscle aches and headaches, improves circulation, relaxes the mind and improves sleep. It also reduces water retention, eases heartburn, nausea and constipation and strengthens birthing muscles. Whether a woman does natural childbirth or not, yoga prepares you for a conscious birth. The aches that make some people’s pregnancy so miserable can be decreased or eradicated with yoga. It can reduce swelling in your joints, prepare you for birth and also prepare you for motherhood. People practise yoga during pregnancy because they know it’s so healthy for them and the baby.

1. Dog Pose
4. Easy Pose Meditation Sit in any comfortable position. 1. Arms are by your sides or folded in lap, shoulders down and away from ears. Close your eyes, breathe deeply. 2. Inhale and exhale deeply as you repeat: Meditation: I become aware of the muscles that support me as I sit. 3. Exhale and scan your body, acknowledging those muscles and the good work they do. 4. Inhale and repeat silently. 5. Exhale, allowing those muscles to relax completely. Breathe deeply several times as you continue to relax and let go.
Kneel in "table position," with knees under hips and arms beneath shoulders. Back is straight, head faces forward. Inhale and raise head and tailbone, letting your belly drop toward the floor. Curve your back in a swayback position. Eyes gaze upward. Take care not to overextend the neck or over arch the back. Alternate between dog and the following cat pose several times, inhaling and exhaling deeply.
2. Cat Pose
Kneel in “table position,” with knees under hips and arms beneath shoulders. Back is straight, head faces forward. Exhale and drop head and tailbone. Arch your back, exhaling further. Tighten buttocks and abdominal muscles. Alternate between dog and cat several times, inhaling and exhaling deeply. Benefits: - Strengthens and relaxes the lower back Increases suppleness along the spine - Improves circulation - Stretches muscles along the back, neck, and arms.
3. Easy Bridge Pose 1. Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor and close to your buttocks. 2. Arms are by your sides. 3. Start by pressing your lower back into the floor so that the tailbone lifts up and away from the floor. Gradually lift the lower back from the floor, one vertebra at a time, until you are resting on your middle or upper back. Buttocks should be lifted a few inches from the floor. Weight should not be on your shoulders and neck. 4. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and begin to slowly lower the back from the upper portion one vertebra at a time. Visualize the spine unrolling. Relax with the legs outstretched or hug the knees gently to the body. Benefits: - Increases flexibility in the back and shoulders Stretches and releases tension in the neck - Strengthens leg muscles. As long as comfort allows, women in the second trimester may also do this pose.
Note: When getting up from a back-lying position, turn to your left or right side first and gradually work up to a sitting or kneeling position. This avoids any straining or dizziness.
Benefits: Relaxes the muscles Brings you back to the present moment Slows the mind Reduces blood pressure and heart rate - Calms the entire being, promoting peace and serenity.
5. Modified Bellows Breath Exhale completely as you tuck chin and tailbone, round your back, and bend at the waist and knees. Hands rest on thighs. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

1. Sit on a mat with legs bent to the right of the body. If necessary, lean against a wall to support the back. 2. Inhale and raise arms up; interlace fingers over your head. Upper arms are alongside the ears. 3. Gently curve your body to the right as you exhale slowly. 4. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and breathe deeply. 5. Inhale and return to an upright position. Lower arms, rest, and breathe normally. 6. Move legs to the left side and repeat by curving to the left. Benefits: - Tones and strengthens muscles along the sides of the body - Aids digestion - Increases flexibility of the spine
7. Firm Pose Sitting Position 1. Kneel on a mat with a cushion or folded blanket between your legs. You may need to lean forward slightly to avoid losing your balance. Tops of feet are flat against the floor, pointing straight back. 2. Supporting yourself with your hands, slowly and carefully lower your buttocks between your heels onto the cushion. 3. If you feel any discomfort, adjust the position of the feet or add more height to the cushion. 4. Hands may be placed behind you for support or may rest on thighs. Chest is lifted. Do not sit in Firm Pose if you have symptomatic (i.e., painful, throbbing) varicose veins.
8. Knee Rocking 1. Sit in a cross-legged position with your left leg on top. If necessary, lean against a wall to support your back (see Healthy Sitting). 2. Cradling the left leg with both arms, lift it toward your chest and abdomen as far you comfortably can. 3. Keeping your back straight, hold the leg as high and close to you as possible without straining. 4. Moving from the hip joint, gently rock the leg back and forth as though rocking a baby. 5. After rocking one leg several times, switch leg position and repeat with other leg. Benefits: - Helps alleviate discomfort in the hip joints caused by your growing baby’s pressure on the nerves and joints in the hip area, buttocks, and thighs.
9. Tension-Relieving Breathing Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms held in front of you, palms together at chest height. Shoulders are down and away from the ears. Open mouth and inhale as you stretch your arms to a T position. Lift your chin. Benefits: - Opens the chest and lungs - Relieves tension in the spine - Promotes a sense of wellbeing and fulfillment
10. Hands-to-Wall Pose
1. Slowly bend the elbows so that gradually and with control, your upper body moves toward the wall as you slowly exhale. 2. Bring your face as close to the wall as you comfortably can. The body remains straight. Do not bend at the waist or knees. 3. Hold for a few moments, breathing normally. 4. Inhale and slowly push away from the wall until your arms are straight and your body is erect. Lower your arms. Relax and breathe normally. Repeat 2 to 3 times. Second part: 1. Stand erect with arms extended in front of you, palms against a wall. Place the body so you are at arm’s length from the wall, leaning at a slight angle. 2. Fingers of both hands point toward each other, touching but not overlapping. 3. Shoulders are relaxed, feet flat on the floor. Buttocks are tucked to prevent lower back from arching. Benefits: This two-part pose tones and strengthens the muscles of the upper chest to better support enlarging breasts. It also strengthens the arms and wrists.

What to Expect from your

20 Week Scan If you are pregnant, your caregiver will probably order an ultrasound exam around the 20th week. What can you expect from your ultrasound? Ready for your big 20-week ultrasound? Ultrasounds are common procedures during pregnancy. It’s a non-invasive prenatal test used to ensure that Baby is developing properly, to check the baby’s estimated size and to see how the baby, placenta and umbilical cord are positioned. At the 20-week ultrasound, it’s also an opportunity to learn the baby’s sex... if Baby is willing to reveal that information to you. The 20-week ultrasound is usually done with a special wand called a transducer that is used on the exterior of the belly. It allows the technician to “see” into the uterus. Earlier ultrasounds may be conducted with a “transvaginal probe” (To give you a hint what that’s like, they use a condom to sheath the probe before inserting it) because the baby is smaller.
then you might accidentally find out - or worse, you might not be able to find out at all. The ultrasound works by sending high-frequency sound waves that are used to produce images of what’s inside you. You may not be able to recognise much of what you see, but the technician is trained to interpret the images. On most sonograms, the image is grainy black and white. The transducer - the part of the machine they rub on your belly (wand) - is moved around almost constantly, and the baby is swimming around, too! (You wouldn’t be the first mama-to-be who thought she’s expecting not a human baby but an alien one.)
What does the UltraSound Show? Ultrasound technology has improved a lot since its advent. If Baby cooperates, you can see fingers, toes, spines and even a little face! Also, you may be able to see the baby’s anatomy. Make your intentions known about finding out the gender (whether you want to or don’t), so that the ultrasound tech knows not to spill the beans. If you don’t tell,

Ultrasound Cheat Sheet Spine Some moms think the baby’s tiny spine looks a lot like a string of pearls - lots of little tiny bones in a line. It reminds me of the spine of dinosaur skeletons you see in natural history museums. Girl or boy? Girl parts look like three lines, while a boy part often appears pretty much as you’d expect. (Be sure not to confuse the umbilical cord and the penis. You might get a surprise at birth if you try to interpret the scan on your own!) Little face Waiting for the first glimpse of Baby’s face? The baby’s face will look a little spooky - like a skull mask - from certain angles. But it will seem super cute if you see your little one sucking his thumb in-utero!

Amniotic fluid will be one of the darker things on the scan, and the harder tissue - such as bone - will appear bright.
While you do need to let the technician concentrate on doing her job, not knowing what’s happening can be frustrating. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about what you are seeing (or if you can’t see). “For one of my ultrasounds in my first pregnancy, the ultrasound technician turned the screen away for the entire 30-minute process, did not talk to me and only printed out a picture at the end. I was too shy to say, ‘Can I see?’ Knowing what I do now, I would have no problem doing that. Speak up, talk to your technician,” said Brenda Mulligan, mother of two.
Preparing for the Ultrasound There really isn’t much to preparing for the ultrasound. Usually, the sonogram imaging specialists will ask you to have a full bladder (but then what pregnant woman doesn’t feel like she has a full bladder?). Depending on how long you have to sit in the waiting room, you may want to bring a bottle of water so that you can unload and refill while you wait so that you aren’t too uncomfortable. Why does your bladder need to be full? When your bladder is full, it acts as a balloon, pushing the uterus up out of the pelvis a bit, which helps the tech visualize the baby, umbilical cord, amniotic sac, placenta and uterus.
The Sound of Silence The ultrasound technician will need to concentrate on finding the right images and measurements for the doctor. (They actually have specific shots they need to capture and annotate.) And depending on the tech, that could result in a lot of silence. “It was nerve wracking at first, while the technician was just measuring and not speaking. We were relieved when she told us everything was perfect. We were not uncomfortable at all, just very excited to see our baby growing,” said Jacqueline Alvarado of Kent. So, don’t worry. Silence doesn’t signal something bad. Chances are, the tech is just concentrating.
Cold Goo for you The wand used to administer the ultrasound is slathered with a gooey gel that allows the wand to easily glide over your skin. Unless they have a special warmer on hand, get ready for a quick shock - the gel is cold. It will remain on your belly throughout the ultrasound. But don’t worry, the ultrasound tech will likely clean off as much as possible after the exam, or at least give you the paper towels to do so.
What to Wear? The technician will need to access your whole belly. Wear a loose fitting top that can be easily moved up and pants with enough give to be pulled down a bit. Also, do not wear a dress - or you will be in your skivvies for the exam. There won’t be a second chance to find out everything you want to know about what you are seeing. If you don’t ask now, you probably won’t have a chance to ask later since techs see many patients every day and won’t be able to answer your questions. Feeling shy? Every Ultrasound is Different Even if you’ve had an ultrasound before, you should know that every ultrasound is different. A variety of factors can influence the experience making it better or worse. “Your experience can be completely different depending on where the ultrasound takes place (an imaging department vs. at a doctor’s visit) and unfortunately, what kind of mood your ultrasound technician is in that day - how much they want to share with you on what they are seeing,” said Brenda. Q. What is a show? Will I bleed? A. Bloody show: this will be a small amount of blood and mucus. This is a very good sign that the cervix has started to dilate. This is what we call the barrier in your cervix which helps prevent germs getting to the baby.

As a birth coach I suggest to all my clients they switch off from everything around them, this will give you nothing to concentrate on apart from your contractions and breathing. A laboring woman is at her best and at ease most when she is not being questioned. Basically we say don't stimulate the neocortex of a laboring woman, this means in everyday life you are thinking, in labor you switch your thinking brain off, if you are then left, labor will be much much more manageable, the problem occurs when you are then asked a question, you then have to think and then realise the pain your experiencing.

My Baby Has CMV When Gaye Tomlinson’s son was diagnosed with profound hearing loss due to a common virus that her health visitor hadn’t even heard of, her tears soon turned to anger. Now she is heading up a charity that aims to bring CMV to the attention of all expectant mothers The first four weeks at home after the birth of my second son Calum were bliss. I had my perfect two little boys at home and I was very tired but very happy. My eldest son Ellis, who was just two, adored his brother at first sight. I’d read stories about elder siblings being unsettled or jealous by a new arrival but there was never a trace of that. Each time Calum cried, Ellis would sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to him until his tears stopped. Calum was such a happy baby and the day before he reached one month old he smiled at me for the first time.
The joy of that moment and those first four weeks was however to be short-lived. It was only two days later that my husband and I found ourselves sat in an audiologist’s waiting room moments away from having our happy little world shattered. Calum had been born at a birthing centre where they didn’t do newborn hearing tests so when he was two weeks old we took him to the Royal Derby Hospital. After three unsuccessful tests they told me we’d have to book a test with an audiologist. Our son was one month and one day old when we were told that he had a severe to profound hearing loss in both ears.

When the audiologist read out the results, my mind shut down and I clung on to Calum. He asked if we had any questions, but I had only one: “How likely is it that you’re wrong?” All those times Ellis had sung lullabies to him. All those words I’d spoken to him. I refused to believe he hadn’t been able to hear us. When we got home I put some music on and turned the television up full blast. I slammed doors. I slammed the stairgate so hard I almost broke it. Calum slept through it all. I knew then. The next few days were horrendous. Ellis kept asking why mummy was crying and I had no answers. I kept asking myself what I had done wrong during the pregnancy. Was it that one glass of wine? Or the time I looked after my niece when she was ill? I tormented myself.
FAMILY It was a month later before anyone even mentioned something called CMV. A pediatrician performed blood and urine tests to see if they could find the aetiology of Calum’s deafness. Calum tested positive for Congenital Cytomegalovirus. Like most parents in this country I’d never heard about CMV – never been told about it at antenatal classes, never read about it in a magazine or heard about it from another mum. My health visitor didn’t even know what it was. She wasn’t alone. A lot of health care professionals we encountered gave us information that I now realise was wholly inaccurate. I found the facts out for myself. I know now that Congenital CMV causes permanent disabilities in one in 1000 babies in the UK making it the most common cause of birth defects in this country. The most common disability associated with Congenital CMV is hearing loss but it can also cause vision loss, mental disability and seizures. It can even be fatal. CMV is more common than Down’s syndrome, Spina Bifida and Cystic Fibrosis yet few pregnant mums have ever heard of it.

In August 2011 Calum had a bilateral cochlear implant operation. We were told not to expect anything at his initial switch on session. But it was immediately clear that he was ‘hearing’.
The virus is spread from person to person by bodily fluids. A lot of small children catch CMV, so women who work with children or who have a family already need to be especially careful during pregnancy.
Pregnant women can reduce the risk of infection by following a few basic hygiene precautions such as:
More than 12 months later and Calum’s development has surpassed anything I could have dreamt of. He understands much of what we say to him and is now talking in short sentences, his favourites being “I don’t like it” and “Mummy, come on”. I am incredibly proud of him.
• Avoiding kissing babies, toddlers and small children directly on the mouth, and kiss them on the cheeks or forehead instead. • Washing hands regularly with soap and water, especially after changing nappies or coming into contact with bodily fluids. • Washing any items that have been contaminated by bodily fluids with soap and water. CMV Action is a charity which has been set up to raise awareness of the virus, campaign for better prevention measures within the health service and encourage research into a CMV vaccine.
At the moment Calum’s hearing seems to be the only thing that has been affected. He sat up, crawled and walked at about the same time as his brother did. But the worry about what else the CMV could cause in the future never goes away. What you need to know about CMV……
I find it so frustrating and so hard to accept that no-one at any point during pregnancy tells you about CMV or the steps you can take to reduce your chances of contracting the virus.
CMV is a common virus that can infect people of all ages. Most healthy adults and children will have no signs or symptoms and no longterm effects from CMV, but it can be very dangerous to unborn babies.
I believe women have a right to be informed and I believe this so passionately that I am now Chair of CMV Action – a charity that’s been set up to raise awareness of the virus, campaign for better prevention measures within the health service and encourage research into a CMV vaccine.
The transfer of CMV from a mother to her unborn baby during pregnancy is one of the main causes of children being born with disabilities in the UK. It can cause problems such as hearing loss, physical disabilities, learning difficulties and seizures. Around 900 babies are born every year with permanent disabilities as a result of CMV – that is 1 in every 1000 births. As CMV is a relatively unknown condition, it is a common misconception that it is rare. It is in fact more common than Down’s syndrome, Toxoplasmosis, Spina Bifida and Cystic Fibrosis.
We’ve got a mountain to climb because awareness of the virus is so low but I feel it’s the least I can do to prevent other families going through what we have been through.
• Avoiding sharing dummies, cutlery, drinks or food with anyone.
It offers advice and support to anyone affected by Congenital CMV and helps ensure they receive the best care possible. It puts families in touch with each other and provides a personal support service for each of its members.
There is no licensed vaccine against CMV at the moment. Research is currently underway for a vaccine which CMV Action is keen to see introduced nationally, but is some years off. In the meantime, it is very important to focus on preventing CMV by taking the hygiene precautions set out above.

How the Meningitis Trust/Meningitis UK
Can Help You
Amy Greengrass, Community Support Officer for the Meningitis Trust in London, explains how the charity can support you – and what you can do for it in return. Meningitis is the most feared of childhood diseases. It can strike in an instant but its impact can last a lifetime. Around 3,400 people each year contract bacterial meningitis - the inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain – and one in ten will die with a further one in three left with permanent disabilities such as limb loss, blindness, deafness or brain damage. It can affect anyone, of any age, but babies, children under 5 and young people aged 14 to 24 are among the most at risk. But, help is at hand. At the Meningitis Trust/Meningitis UK we fight the disease on all fronts, bringing together the best in research and prevention with awareness raising and support services. We are here to help, when you need us for as long as you need us. The Meningitis Trust/Meningitis UK has been helping people rebuild their lives after meningitis for over 25 years and has a team of specialist community support workers across the UK, reaching out to people however, whenever and wherever they need us.

The charity offers a range of free professional services and community based support for people affected by meningitis. These include: Financial grants: A Financial Support Grant from the Meningitis Trust can help pay for things such as specialist equipment, therapy, travel and accommodation costs for hospital visits and training. The Trust is the only meningitis charity in the UK to give financial support in this way. Every year it provides over ÂŁ250,000 to directly pay for items and support which help families deal with the impact of meningitis and help them begin to move on with their lives. Helpline: A confidential nurse-led helpline is available to anyone who is looking for information or support around the subjects of meningitis, meningococcal septicaemia and the after-effects. Calls are answered 24 hours a day by nurses or our experienced support staff. Tel: 0808 80 10 388. Counselling: Each year many people turn to the Trust to access emotional support following a diagnosis of meningitis. This request for support can be at any time after the disease and many people come to us months and even years after the initial diagnosis. Creative therapies: Following an experience of meningitis many children will not want to talk about what has happened to them, but changes in their behaviour, sleeping, eating and interaction with others will suggest that they are experiencing some form of emotional distress. Access to a creative therapy which can help them express their feelings in a gentle, supportive environment, can be very helpful. We can make a referral to a professional therapist who can use art, play, drama or music.

Time to think about holidays again….

Now that children are back at school, you can start thinking about your next holiday. Fancy a trip to France? Ever wondered why pretty much every time you go there on holiday (whether during UK school term or holiday) French children also seem to be on holiday? Estelle Le Guillou, director of the French-speaking nanny agency Oui Maman explains why… It has nothing to do with the French 35-hour week or RTT (aka Réduction du Temps de Travail or extra “rest” days gained when employees work more than their contractual hours)… but merely with how the French Ministère de l’Education Nationale (Department for Education) decides to split the school year. A French school year is at least 36 weeks long (meaning on average 144 days for primary schools and 175 to 180 days for secondary schools), which is one of the shortest in Europe. There are four holiday periods, namely All Saints, Christmas, Winter and Spring holidays. In comparison, around 70% of secondary and 30% of primary schools in England are in charge of setting their own term dates, with the school year lasting on average 190 days for
maintained schools. Local authorities set term and holiday dates for maintained nursery schools, community schools, community special schools, voluntary controlled schools and pupil referral units. Back on the other side of the Channel, All Saints holidays last around ten days (combined with bank holidays) and Christmas, Winter and Spring holidays last two weeks. During summer, school generally breaks for the first week of July and resumes the first week of September. France has been divided into three regional education authority“zones” for the purpose of holidays since 1964: zone A (Caen, ClermontFerrand, Grenoble, Lyon, Montpellier, NancyMetz, Nantes, Rennes, Toulouse), zone B (AixMarseille, Amiens, Besançon, Dijon, Lille, Limoges, Nice, Orléans-Tours, Poitiers, Reims, Rouen,
The main objective of this regional division is practical: spread the Spring and Winter holidays to reduce road congestion (understandably from a geographical point of view- French people tend to drive a lot more than fly) and allow touristic destinations (especially ski resorts) to cope with demand. As a result French families are not charged exorbitant amounts (like in the UK) to all go away the same week, nor are they tempted to let their children skive off school to beat the holiday rush. But the peak holiday period lasts longer - should you wish to go off-peak to France, make sure that you check whether all three French school zones are back at school!

It involves clear boundaries and remaining consistent. I have worked for 20 years with families and I have a simple and straight forward process when working in a family home.

Family Firstly – Set the Family House Rules

These are designed specifically for your family and focus on what your boundaries are. Below is an example.
We do not shout at one another.
The most precious present you can give your child is… …your time! Take them to the zoo, or to the newsagents to buy a magazine and then go and read it together in a coffee shop. Go for a bike ride together or have a picnic under the kitchen table!
We do not throw things at people or hurt them.
Your quality time is all your child wants..
We do not bite people.
Thirdly – The Consequence System. The Shout Spot or Thinking Spot.
We listen and do as Mummy and Daddy ask. We sit at the meal table without toys. We feed ourselves nicely. We go to bed nicely after story time. We play together and share our toys. We talk in our ‘big boy voice’. No whining.
Now comes the challenge. What to do when your child refuses to listen, is being unruly and you are starting to feel ‘out of control’. • Take a deep breath and roll your shoulders. • Don’t react immediately. Aim to stay calm and in control. • Address your other children to ensure they are all happy and entertained and then let them know that you are dealing with their brother / sister and will be straight back.
Secondly – Devise a ‘Praise and Reward’ System
• Approach your child. Bend down, make eye contact and hold them by the top of the arms.
This is as much for the parents as it is the children. Every time you notice your child being well behaved you praise them. “Johnny you are playing so nicely there and letting Mummy make the dinner. Thank you.” Every time you praise you have a reward system to illustrate the good behaviour.
• “I asked you not to do that and you did not listen. We do not hurt people in this house. Come with me.”
Ideas for Reward Systems
Pop a marble into a jar and when it is full (30 marbles) your child wins a prize! Tie a ribbon around a tree in the garden. 30 ribbons and then a prize! Fill a jar gradually with rice and once it is full – a prize! Add carriages to a train and with 30 carriages – a prize! Build a tower and once you have 30 bricks – a prize! Once 30 marbles. Bricks etc have been achieved a prize is given to your child. It usually takes up to 5 days to win a prize. 3 prizes down the line and good behaviour becomes natural and no longer requires a reward system.

Turn your child around and walk them to a space in your house that is boring and out of sight. The front door mat is the simple place. Ensure the door is locked. Sit them down and simply say “Stay there until I am ready and I will come and get you.” Confidently walk away.
This is not an exercise that you time. Your child will take as long as they need. YES they will keep leaving the mat and you need to return them silently and when they are sitting say “I will come and get you when all the shouting stops.” I call the consequence system either the ‘Shout spot’ or the ‘Thinking spot’ depending on the type of child!
Always walk them back to the mat, don’t carry them. This can become a game. Walk slowly behind them with your arms under their armpits. Continue returning them. They will get cross and this is what you want to happen. Now you know that they are feeling the consequence. They do not like this system in the same way that you did not like the bad behaviour.
Your child needs to get cross and then calm down before the ‘consequence system’ is all finished. They climb the emotional mountain and come down the other side.

What do I do if they just won’t stay on the mat? Keep returning them and ensure you remove yourself from where they are in the hallway. You need to be at the ready and return them before they get too far into the kitchen etc. Remain calm and relaxed. Don’t stress. They do get the message in their own time. It might take many return visits but it DOES work. My record is 52 times with a 3 year old!
The slow walk back – not the fun carry is very important. DON’T talk to them! Think of yourself as a ‘RagDoll’. You are not being Mummy at this stage. My child happily sits on the mat and then shouts ‘Sorry’. He comes off the mat and repeats the behaviour. What do I do? Just because he says ‘Sorry’ does not mean he can come off of the mat. He is to remain there until you hear he is not happy with the consequence. Only after shouting and then calming down can he come off of the mat.
Some children use the word ‘Sorry’ like a ‘Get out of jail free card’! My child takes himself to the mat with his toys and would sit there for hours. It isn’t working. Eventually they will want to move from the mat. That is when you remind them of why they are there and say “I will come and get you when I am ready.” As you confidently walk away you are likely to hear them shout. • Once the noise has quietened you approach your child and simply say “That’s it, all finished. No more shouting. Let’s go and play.” • Guide them to an activity and start to play with them. • After a couple of minutes make eye contact with your child. • “Remember, when you hurt somebody, straight to the mat.” • You simply remind them of why they were at the mat in this simple statement and then you continue playing silently. • Your child will be absorbing the system you have just used and will now understand the consequence of his actions and think more carefully next time. The beauty of this method is that after 3 consecutive days of implementing rules, rewards and carrying out the consequence process your child learns his boundaries and starts to make the right choices rather than the wrong ones.

Building Healthy Homework Habits! Getting children to complete their homework is not impossible; All you need is Healthy Homework Habits!
2. Allow your children to have opportunities to fail
Creating habits of success in your children will take a while, perhaps a month or two. During this learning period, it’s important to stick to the principles and follow the guidelines outlined here. Be patient. Don’t expect immediate results - or you will abandon a successful strategy just because you failed to give the seeds of success an opportunity to grow.
If you try to protect your children from every failure, you guarantee their ultimate failure, because they won’t be prepared for life. Allow them to experience the consequences of their choices. This doesn’t mean you just ignore their actions, or pretend you don’t care. You must learn, however, that protecting kids from the consequences of their choices is the equivalent of expecting a muscle to grow when you never work it. It just doesn’t happen. Life happens. In every circumstance, there is a consequence for choices. Please recognise the critical role that life consequences play in teaching your kids about life. We can’t protect them from age-appropriate struggles and choices; this is how they build emotional, social and intellectual “muscle.” Protect them from the consequences that come with poor habits, and you will teach them a false lesson. They will grow up thinking that the world will protect them from poor choices - and this just isn’t so!

Instead, we need to send them to school with work that reflects their skill level, so the teacher will know what to respond to and focus on. Instead of correcting homework, coach your children to do it themselves. Ask questions that guide their attention to errors and help them solve problems, then notice and reward their efforts. If you assume the responsibility for correcting their homework, you’ll produce children who depend on you for all the answers. As they get older, this will produce more frustration in school and poorer performance. How do you do this within the “Work, then play” approach? Simple, You make sure the homework is “checked” by you before play begins. In other words, HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE! Give few clues, when you see errors. Over time, gradually put more and more responsibility on them to find their errors before they can play. In this way, there is no reward in rushing through their work. There is reward in learning to pay better attention, so that you don’t have to keep repeating your homework. Slowly for some, they get it. Others will get it very quickly.
9. Hold the Course As you implement these strategies, do so strongly and confidently, so your children know you’re prepared to hold the course. They’ll recognise any hesitancy. Be firm and consistent in your control of the environment, not in your control of your children. Offer them a choice, but maintain the “work then play” structure every day. Then sit back and have some fun. Notice how enjoyable your interactions with your children become when you’re no longer nagging them to do their homework. Instead, you’re allowing the consequences of the work-then-play approach to build behaviour over time. Be patient. Healthy behaviour doesn’t appear overnight, or in a week. If you persist, you’ll likely to see changes in two to six weeks.

LUNCHBOX Treats Ingredients 2 eggs 200g can tuna in oil 100g (4 oz) sweetcorn 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp white wine vinegar 4 spring onions, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper a few drops Tabasco sauce salad cress (optional) 2 pitta breads
Stuffed Pitta Pockets How many peanut butter or cheese sandwiches can a parent make? By half term most creative lunch impulses have died a dreary day-to-day death. Stuffed pitta pockets with a nutritious filling make a nice change from an ordinary sandwich for your child’s lunchbox - try this tasty tuna mix which can be made up the night before.
Method: Put the eggs in a saucepan of cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 7 to 8 minutes (the yolk should be solid). Drain and cool under cold water. Peel the eggs when cold.

Meanwhile, strain the oil from the can of tuna and mix the flaked tuna together with the sweetcorn, mayonnaise, white wine vinegar, spring onion, salt and pepper and the tabasco sauce. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Combine the flour, skimmed milk powder, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and ginger in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the honey, maple syrup, eggs, vegetable oil and vanilla essence. Beat lightly with a wire whisk until blended. Add the grated apple, carrots and raisins to the liquid mixture and stir until just combined. Line a muffin tray with paper cups and fill until two-thirds full. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. You can also make mini muffins which are ideal for children they will take about 15 minutes to bake.

Ingredients 100g new potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil. 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped. 1 courgette, chopped. 2 tomatoes, skinned, de-seeded and roughly chopped. 4 eggs. 1 tbsp milk. 2 tbsp freshly grated parmesan cheese. Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Spanish Omelette Spanish omelettes are good eaten hot or cold. You could cook this for your own supper and then wrap a piece up in foil and store in the fridge ready for your child’s lunchbox the next day.
Method: Bring a lightly salted saucepan of water to the boil, add the new potatoes, reduce the pan to a simmer and cook the potatoes for about 12 minutes, until tender. Drain, leave to cool and then cut into slices. Heat the oil in an 18-20 cm non stick frying pan. Add the onion and sautĂŠ for 2 minutes. Add the chopped courgette and sautĂŠ for about 6 minutes. When the courgette is cooked, add the tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes, then stir in the sliced new potatoes.
Suitable for freezing
Beat the eggs together with the milk, parmesan cheese and a little seasoning. Pour the egg mixture over the vegetables and cook over a medium heat for about 4 minutes or until the eggs are set underneath. Meanwhile, preheat the grill to high. Place the frying pan under the grill with the handle sticking out if not metal and cook for about 3 minutes until golden and set. When the omelette is cold, cut into wedges and wrap in foil.

As well as trying all kinds of craft projects and shopping for gorgeous bits and pieces. you can now attend the spanish class for kids on Monday afternoons. There is an under 4s class and an over 4s class. You could even fit in some sewing in the room next door whilst your child is learning spanish and making things themselves.

As a mother of four I have often been praised on how well behaved my children are. This became a recurring theme over the years and made me stop and think about the reasons why this was so. Apart from being rather disciplined and sticking to routines, I also developed my own hand painted reward charts that I used from a very early age. Creepy-Crawly Caterpillar Pumpkins
Cheesecloth Ghosts Stack one small paper cup on top of another that's turned upside down and tape them together. Inflate a small balloon and rest it in the top cup. Cut cheesecloth into pieces that measure about eight inches square and fill a bowl with fabric stiffener. Soak a piece of cheesecloth in fabric stiffener and immediately drape it over the balloon. Let dry for 10 minutes. Pop the balloon with a pin to reveal a hardened shape. Cut two tiny circles out of black felt for eyes and glue them to the ghost. Remove the ghost from thecup and rough up the ends. Thread fishing line through the top of each ghost, securing with a knot to hang.

Create a fun focal point for your Halloween mantel with this broom-riding witch and swarming bat decoration. Find a silhouette print, and have a print shop enlarge and print the image to the desired size. Cut out the witch-on-broom image and trace onto black poster board or construction paper with chalk; cut out. Cut out the bat images and repeat the same process. Hang the witch and bat cutouts on the wall over your mantel.

This easy-to-make pumpkin decoration requires no carving at all. Simply paint 10 pumpkins and the stems (we used light green and black paint, but you can choose whatever colours you like), arrange to form a caterpillar, and cover with adhesive-felt dots. Finish the creepy creature with a pair of large googly eyes.
Halloween Paper Pumpkins Orange pumpkins are great but these multi-hued paper pumpkins mix and match with your decor. This easy halloween craft can be put together in minutes starting with strips of scrapbook paper. Cut 1-inch strips of patterned paper, form the strips into a circle as shown, and attach using a brad at both the top and the bottom. Paint a wine cork the same color as the pumpkin and hot-glue the cork to the top for the pumpkin’s stem. Embellish with ribbon and jewels for some stylish pumpkin decoration.

Create a spooky cast of characters for your dining room table. Use spools of thread for the mini-monster’s bodies. Embellish with googly eyes, ribbon and string. We used felt cutouts for the eyes and mouths for the creatures.

Toss the Spider Game Mark out the spider web pattern on an old rug and attach pipe cleaners to a bean bag and googly eyes to make your spider. Then take turns seeing who can throw closest to the centre .
Pumpkin Bowling Spray paint a pumpkin so it looks more like a bowling ball and draw faces on empty white plastic bottles, find a spacious area and you are ready to bowl.
Balloon Popping Game Slip sweeties into the balloons and then blow them up and attached them to a large cardboard box. The children then take turns throwing safety darts at the balloons to reveal what they have won. Put a special treat in a couple of the balloons. You could even try making a bat out of black balloons for a change. Really a lot of fun!

Green Slime Lemonade
Ingredients 1 cup sugar Half cup hot water 6 large lemons One and a half pints water A few drops of green food colouring Slices of lime, orange and kiwi
Homemade lemonade tastes great and it’s easy to prepare. Add a few drops of food colouring to give it a more murky and slimy look. Method: To make the syrup. Put the sugar in a heat proof bowl and add the hot water. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then set aside to cool. Roll the lemons. This helps release the juice. Squeeze the lemons - you need 8 fl oz of juice. Add the sugar syrup, chilled water and a few drops of food coloring. Pour the juice into a round glass bowl and decorate with slices of lime, orange and kiwi.

These cute little snacks are great for a Halloween party. The kids can even help make them. Method: Snap twiglets in half (or use mini ones) and attach to grissini sticks with string Tie chives around them. It may be easier to tie the chives if you put them in a microwave for a few seconds so that they are more pliable.
Deadman’s Finger Sandwiches These ghoulish sandwiches look terrific as Halloween Party Food. Method:
Ingredients Thin sliced white bread, crusts removed Soft margarine Cream cheese or peanut butter Almonds Strawberry jam or tomato ketchup
Gently flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin to make them more pliable. Spread with a little margarine and either some cream cheese or peanut butter. Roll up the sandwiches and make three indentations with a blunt knife to form the finger joints. Roundhouse This former Victorian steam engine shed has been transformed into an attractive and intimate venue that hosts a dynamic programme of live theatre, music, dance, comedy and circus. The Roundhouse sets out, above all, to reach out to teenagers and young adults, particularly with its range of fantastic workshops, courses and other projects. Accessibility is excellent.
