COMMENT t’s that unnerving time of year when we have confirmed what we already know – that the construction industry faces a ‘challenging’ year ahead. The first quarter results are coming in thick and fast (fiscal year results for Japan and India) and, as International Construction goes to press, the diminishing numbers reported are variously attributed to, among other things, ‘…drastic decline in demand from China’, ‘…falling sales in the Middle East’ and ‘…chaos in Latin America’. Komatsu – after Caterpillar, the world’s second largest manufacturer of construction equipment – announced a 6.3% fall in net sales in its fiscal year results, again citing China, along with other emerging markets, as a primary reason for the reversal in its fortunes. Cat itself is certainly suffering, its first quarter revenues falling a huge US$ 3.2 billion. Even for Cat, that’s a hard figure to downplay, and while the company’s chairman and CEO, Doug Oberhelman, said the results were not unexpected, it was nonetheless disconcerting to see his attached comments focusing on issues such as the quality of the product and the safety of Cat’s facilities, along with restructuring and cost reduction programmes. A little more upbeat next time, please, Mr Oberhelman. The situation in China is, of course, giving us the biggest headache. So many were drawn in by the hypnotic pull of this bubble market. With hindsight, we all feel we could have seen the situation in China coming but, in truth, like most bubble markets, it started its life as a winning formula of economic reforms and modernisation. Everyone wanted to catch the wave and no one wanted to be left behind. In reality, it’s almost impossible to see the point at which the development of infrastructure, the outpouring of foreign investment and the increasing urbanisation of an economic entity devolves into overstretched budgets – and a glut of unsold construction equipment. Now, as well as hoping for a swift return to strong growth in the weakened markets, we are relying on the timid growth of mature markets such as the US and Europe to soften the blow of decreasing machine sales. Yet, there is cause for cautious optimism: this historically cyclical industry has taught us that, from here, the only way is up. It’s just a question of how long we must sit at the bottom waiting. Batten down the hatches, folks, and keep an eye on the flow of Q1 results on khl.com.

CHINA A record quarterly loss for

Crane collapse leaves 18 dead

China’s Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Co has raised questions about the company’s ability to make good its offer to buy US manufacturer Terex Corp. In its first quarter report, Zoomlion revealed it had made a net loss of 660.3 million yuan (US$ 101.50 million). This compares with its loss of 383.4 million yuan ($ 59.01 million) for the same period in 2015. The report comes just weeks after Zoomlion confirmed its $ 3.4 billion offer to acquire Terex.

SWEDEN Manufacturer Atlas Copco has acquired US-based distributor Scales Industrial Technologies, which distributes, services and rents out industrial air compressors and ancillary systems. Atlas Copco bought the company through its Quincy Compressor business, also based in the US, and said that it would be integrated into this division following the deal. Scales Industrial Technologies is located in Carle Place, New York, and operates in the Northeastern region of the US. The company has about 180 employees.

US Swedish contractor Skanska has signed a contract worth US$ 140 million for a new ambulatory care pavilion at the existing Westchester Medical Center, US. The project comprises a 26,000 m², eight-story pavilion, which will include a new ambulatory operating room suite, imaging centre, reception, physician office space, entry canopy for patient drop-off, and new roof-top mechanical, electrical and plumbing units. The company will also expand the existing car park. Construction will begin in June this year and is expected to be completed in September 2018. GERMANY The chairman of the executive board of Bilfinger, Per Utnegaard, is to step down at the end of April for “personal reasons”. He will resign as chairman and member of the executive board by mutual agreement, according to the company. Bilfinger has said it has been in talks with Thomas Blades, a member of the executive board of gases and engineering company Linde, as well as other candidates, to replace Utnegaard as chairman of the executive board. It said a decision had not yet been taken.

High winds causes 80 tonne crane to collapse on temporary building in Dongguan city, China, killing 18 and injuring more t least 18 people are dead and another 18 injured after an 80 tonne crane collapsed during high winds at a construction site in southern China. According to Chinese authorities, the crane fell directly onto a two-storey temporary building, constructed from shipping containers, in Dongguan city in the eastern Guandong Province. Spokesperson for the team in charge of the rescue effort, Luo Bin, told the Chinese state media that 139 construction workers were inside the building when the crane collapsed on Wednesday, April 6. Of the 18 people injured in the fatal collapse, four were reported to be in a serious condition. The deadly incident is the worst in China’s construction industry since the massive construction waste landslide in Shenzhen in December last year, which left 74 people dead or missing. An investigation into the incident is underway. Questions have been raised about the decision to place such a large structure adjacent to a temporary building housing so many people. Following the incident local police reportedly detained 11 people on suspicion of failing to prevent the disaster.

CANADA

First quarter falllowerfor Canada spending on institutional and In the first quarter of 2016, Canada has recorded a decline of 3.2 % in non-residential buildings construction, compared with the same period in 2015. Total non-residential construction spend of C$ 12.5 billion (US$ 9.7 billion) was also 1.6 % down on the fourth quarter of 2015. Construction of commercial buildings fell by 1.8 %, while industrial building construction saw a decline of 2.5 %. Another element in the overall construction picture – that of institutional investment – fell by 0.9%. The first quarter results saw a fall in the overall construction spend of 22 out of 34 census metropolitan areas (CMAs). The sharpest declines came from two of the country’s largest CMA’s, Toronto and Montréal, with Toronto’s fall following seven consecutive quarterly increases. The result has been attributed to

commercial building construction. One of few recorded rises came in Vancouver, where construction spend on both commercial and industrial buildings increased, and institutional investment moved in a positive direction. Despite this, the Canadian construction industry is forecast to improve over the next five years, despite declining 1.7% in 2015, according to a report by Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Center (CIC). CIC believes the market could reach US$ 321 billion by 2020. Canada’s construction industry recorded an output of US$ 289 billion in 2015, falling just over US$ 5 billion from a year earlier. Factors such as fragile economic conditions, low commodity prices, poor fixedcapital investments and a high rate of unemployment contributed to its weak performance.

US

Cat down in Q1 results Caterpillar has recorded first quarter revenues of US$ 9.5 billion, representing a year-on-year fall of US$ 3.2 billion. The US equipment manufacturer also saw its profit per share decrease some $ 1.57 to $ 0.46 per share from the same period a year earlier. Doug Oberhelman, chairman and CEO, said the company expected such results, given a sales decline across the company. He added, “While many of the industries we serve are challenged, we remain focused on what we can control: the quality of our products, our market position, safety in our facilities and continued restructuring and cost reduction. “In fact, our period costs and variable manufacturing costs in the quarter were nearly $ 500 million lower than the first quarter of 2015.” The company reflected on its outlook for 2016 saying that it had seen recent increases in commodity prices, some signs of improvement in construction equipment in China and better order activity than expected at Bauma, Germany, pointing towards better optimism.

WORLD NEWS PANAMA New locks on the expanded Panama Canal will be ready for use by June this year, according to Jorge L. Quijano, CEO and administrator of the project. At the opening ceremony of the Scale Model Manoeuvring Training Facility in March, construction of the waterway was said to be 97% complete, with the inauguration date now set for June 26. The final phase of construction is now underway, with the final plug separating the upper chamber of the Agua Clara Locks and Gatun Lake now being removed by the Panama Canal Dredging Division. Once fully removed, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans will meet via the canal’s new lane – completing one of the world’s largest infrastructure projects since the canal’s original construction. The canal will reopen with twice its original capacity.

Coal-power Budget Cairo Metro stations reduction contract As many as 43 coal-burning power Faithful+Gould has announced that Vinci Construction Grands Projects stations are expected to be built in Japan over the next 12 years, after the Environment Ministry gave the green light to projects in February this year. Japan currently has a total of 90 coal-fired units with a total capacity of 40.5 GW. Another 50 added by 2028 could represent a total capacity of 61 GW. Coal is a cheaper alternative to generate electricity, and new sources of power are essential following the closing of nuclear power stations in 2011, after the tsunami. Before these power stations closed, nuclear energy supplied a third of the market. According to Global Construction Review, Japan is planning for a scenario where demand for energy rises by 22% to 1.1 trillion kWh by 2030, despite its declining economy. The country’s ten regional utilities lost their monopoly over electricity supply on 1 April this year, and 266 companies are now licensed to supply the domestic market, including telecom firms, trading conglomerates and travel agencies.

Saudi Arabia will spend around US$ 29.9 billion on construction projects in 2016, reflecting a 20% decrease on last year’s budget. The integrated project and programme management consultancy company ran a seminar alongside Saudi Council of Engineers at the council’s offices in Jeddah, which was designed to educate project managers and industry professionals on the importance of early engagement of project and programme management. The event was part of a series of seminars that have become increasingly important, following the falling oil prices and the effects this has had on the Kingdom’s expenditure. Following the Kingdom’s revised budget of US$ 229 billion for 2016, a number of construction projects have either been scaled down, or put on hold indefinitely. It is expected that spending will be similar in 2017, while 2018 will see a return to growth. Faithful+Gould said that offering such seminars equips project managers with the right tools.

and Bouygues Construction have secured a new joint-venture contract to work on the Cairo metro. The € 1.1 billion (US$ 1.24 billion) 67-month project includes the construction of 17.7 km of line, along with 15 new stations. The project, known as Phase 3 of Line 3, was awarded by the National Authority for Tunnels, and continues a working partnership with Vinci and Bouygues that extends back to 1981. Once completed, the Cairo metro’s length will increase to approximately 100 km of line, serving around 5 million passengers a day in North Africa’s largest city. According to the Vinci press release, the new project will generate up to 5,000 jobs, as well as benefiting a large number of French small-medium enterprize companies (SMEs). It is reported, for example, that the previous phase of construction – also carried out by Vinci and Bouygues – called on more than 600 French SMEs as suppliers and subcontractors.

construction company, Komatsu, has released its results for the fiscal year to March 31, 2016, showing net sales of JPY 1,854.9 billion (US$ 16.69 billion). The figure represents a fall of 6.3%, compared with the previous fiscal year. In terms of its construction, mining and utility equipment business, Komatsu reported a total of JPY 1,640.0 billion (US$ 14.76 billion), down 6.9% from the previous year. The company’s profit within this segment declined 19.0%, to JPY 184.1 billion (US$ 1.66 billion). The company attributed the decline to reduced demand in China and other emerging countries, as well as a fall in sales of mining equipment. Komatsu also reported that it had been successful in capturing demand for general construction equipment in North America.

INDIA

Deadly collapse A flyover under construction in Kolkata, India, has collapsed, killing at least 23 people and injuring almost 100. Rescuers spent the night trying to remove the rubble, as more people are feared to be trapped under the concrete and steel bridge. Police have now opened a case of culpable homicide against the company building the flyover, IVRCL, it has been reported. The accident happened near Girish Park, one of Kolkata’s most densely populated neighbourhoods. The 2 km-long flyover had been under construction since 2009. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose centre-left party is seeking reelection next month in the state of West Bengal, said those responsible would not be spared. He went on to cast blame on the previous state government that had awarded the flyover contract in 2007.

China’s new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank looks to ‘Silk Road’ highways projects

T

he World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed agreements with China’s recently established Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), to jointly fund infrastructure development in

Asia. The projects include a highway in Pakistan, an expressway running from the capital of Tajikistan to its border with Uzbekistan, and a ring road in Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty. The agreements signal an acceptance of AIIB into the global lending community, and could be a springboard to many more such deals, with both the World Bank and ADB keen to utilise AIIB’s US$ 100 billion in capital. As for AIIB, jointly funding infrastructure projects with the two multilateral lenders offers the opportunity for it to quickly grow its portfolio and consequently improve its credit rating. Both the World Bank and ADB have made it clear that they will be the senior partners in any joint ventures in the short-term. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said, “The AIIB is only now increasing their staff. So likely, the first projects will be that we do all of that project preparation. We do all the work that requires huge amounts of staff in a large and institutional infrastructure, and then they will simply co-finance.” According to reports, the AIIB is expected to lend $ 10 billion to $ 15 billion annually over the next five or six years. CHINA Spending on construction in the US fell 0.5% in February, according to the latest figures from the Commerce Department. The fall follows a 2.1% increase in the previous month and reflects weakness in the non-residential construction market. Conversely, the residential construction market saw a 0.9% rise, the largest monthly increase since October 2007. The across-the-board decline in construction activity puts the seasonally adjusted annual rate at US$ 1.14 trillion, with government construction spend falling 1.7%. In 2015, construction spend rose 10.6% to US$ 11 trillion, compared with the previous year, the highest level of annual spending since 2007.

Construction Company (CCCC) announced stronger than expected full-year results (to December 2015) at a recent press conference. The contractor – with around 112,000 employees in 130 countries – saw turnover rise 10% to 404 billion yuan (US$ 63 billion), compared with the previous year. The company’s profits increased 13% to 16 billion yuan (US$ 2.5 billion), during the same period. CCCC’s chief financial officer, Fu Junyuan, said the company’s focus on overseas projects had been a major factor in its success, with revenues from work undertaken outside of China leaping 20%. One of the key areas of revenue for CCCC has been Africa, where the company is working on a number of major infrastructure projects in Kenya. CCCC will build two sections of the Mombasa–Malaba railway, Kenya.

JAPAN

Hitachi struggles Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM) has recorded fiscal year revenues of JPY 758.33 billion (US$ 6.82 billion), representing a 7% decrease compared to the same period a year ago. HCM said its decrease was due to a decline in construction/mining machinery sales resulting from weaker demand. The fiscal year ran from 1 April 2015, to 31 March 2016. Its operating income also fell 46.1% to JPY 34.05 billion (US$ 310 million) for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which the company said was due to a decline in sales volume due to lower demand, exchange loss, and expenses for business/structural reform. Meanwhile, the company has announced its new president and CEO - Makoto Yamazawa. He is also the new regional CEO for Europe, the Middle East, and North, West and Central Africa.

New US$ 4.6 billion SR-520 six-lane floating bridge opens to public in Washington State onstruction of the six-lane SR-520 pontoon bridge across Lake Washington in the US, has been completed. Bicycle users and pedestrians are currently allowed to use the bridge, with motorised vehicles set to commence crossings at the end of April. The US$ 4.6 billion bridge, which took four years to construct, replaces the 53-year-old original floating 520 bridge, and was built by Kiewit, General and Manson, as a joint-venture project. The new bridge is built on 77 concrete pontoons, including 21 longitudinal pontoons, each measuring 110 metres in length and almost 23 metres in width and weighing around 11,000 tonnes. The bridge is fixed to the lake bed with 58 anchors, the largest of which weigh around 450 tonnes. Monitoring technology for the bridge includes ‘smart highway’ to monitor traffic levels and systems to detect leaks in the pontoons and assess wind levels.

Volvo’s Q1 results hold firm Operating margin was also Volvo CE has released its results for the first quarter of 2016, revealing its sales and profits have remained steady in the face of challenging global market conditions. The company’s net sales fell 2% to SEK 12.45 billion (US$ 1.53 billion), while operating income was marginally down at SEK 341 million (US$ 41.9 million), compared with SEK 352 million ($ 43.2 million) in Q1 of 2015.

maintained, according to the new figures, standing at 2.7%, compared with 2.8% in the same period in 2015. Volvo said it had seen ‘increased momentum’ in the Chinese market, combined with stable sales from the US and a strengthening European market, driven largely by France, where demand, it said, has leapt 55%.

revenues of US$ 1.4 billion – a decrease of 4.7% from the same period a year ago. The company also reported profits for the quarter of US$ 223.5 billion, which is a loss of 19% year-on-year. Interestingly, Zoomlion saw record losses in its first quarter results, throwing doubts on its proposed deal to acquire Terex. Dam funding halted Funding for the Agua Zarca dam in Honduras has been suspended by the Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO), following the murder of two local activists. Nelson García, an environmentalist with the Council of Indigenous and Popular Organisations of Honduras (COPINH), was shot dead in March, just two weeks after the fatal shooting of the group’s founder, Berta Cáceres. Ms Caceres was a member of the local Lenca people, and the leader of a campaign against the Agua Zarca scheme – a dam being constructed on the Gualcarque river, on land claimed by the Lenca.

SITE REPORT Taking shape in Turkmenistan

Taking shape in T As development of the new US$ 2.25 billion Ashgabat International Airport takes shape in Turkmenistan,

iC paid the site a visit and discovered the challenges of airport construction go way beyond concrete and steel. hile the decline in global energy prices caused Turkmenistan’s growth to slow to 6.5% in 2015 (from 10.3% in the previous year), the Asian Development Bank forecasts a slight recovery in 2017. Nonetheless, there is a sense that the country may have too many eggs in its energy basket and some diversification would help smooth the peaks and troughs of modern commodities markets. The World Bank’s most recent visitor figures for Turkmenistan date back to 2007 – when a paltry 7,000 arrived. This is a shockingly low figure for a country that an unquestionably has tourism potential – especially in the now blooming city of Ashgabat. Although there has been no overt statement on tourism from the government, what other reason can there be for the construction of Central Asia’s biggest and most expensive airport? True, the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games will take place in Turkmenistan in 2017 – for which an immensely impressive Olympic Complex is being prepared – but what happens next? Clearly, a huge uplift in visitor and/or transit passenger numbers is required to make the new airport viable. Following the decision to offer the construction contract to Turkish contractor Polimeks, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow said, “Construction of the new airport is

W

dictated by both plans and priorities for further socio-economic development of Turkmenistan, as well as the objectives of the steady build-up of international cooperation, integration into the global economic system”. The project got underway early in 2013, with a projected delivery date of August 2016 – and Polimeks has a proud history of delivering on time and on budget.

The project The new 161,000 m2 terminal building will have the capacity tto welcome 14 million passengers a year, while a new 7,840 m runway will be able w tto accommodate the Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8, the largest of today’s B passenger aircraft. p In all, 2.43 million m2 of runways, ttaxiways and aprons will be constructed as part of the airport’s redevelopment. p The new main terminal is being cconstructed between the original north aand south runways, with the farthest tterminal gates, arranged in a star shape at tthe western end of the terminal building. Here was the first challenge for Polimeks, H as, on the site of the planned circular gate array stood the stilloperational air traffic control tower. Project coordinator, Emre Bakkal made a bold decision to being construction around the tower, before carefully demolishing it once the replacement tower was operational. The design of the 44 m high terminal building is both impressive and ambitious, with arriving passengers ushered under the undulating roof (the outstretched wings of a giant hawk) and into a total internal space of around 165,000 m2. When iC visited Ashgabat earlier this year, the development was reaching its final stages, with external teams placing curved panels

SITE REPORT Taking shape in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan New and renewed areas of runway and taxiway are in place, with the air traffic control tower to the right

on the roof, recently delivered by German engineering group POHL. Mr Emre Bakkal said, “The cladding of the roof is a challenge because it is amorphous. “These are 3D members,” he said, “and they’re designed one by one and also packaged and numbered before they’re brought up here. The installation, of course, is a bird shape, and must be put together like a puzzle and, yes, it’s a challenge.” The roof is the latest in a number of challenges faced by Polimeks in delivering the new airport. As Mr Bakkal pointed out, “The one thing you know at the beginning of the project is that you have a definite timeframe and an absolute budget, from the government that you can never exceed. One challenge comes from Polimeks itself. Mr Bakkal said, “We have two giant teams in two separate countries – one is in Turkey, with a lot of designers there, while here in Turkemenistan, we have a large team working on site, and another smaller group working in the office in Ashgabat.” At one point, the project required 14,000 people working on site. There were also around 1,200 pieces of construction machinery, including mobile and tower cranes, haulers, cherry pickers, asphalt finishers and concrete finishers, all working in the shadow of a 600-tonne capacity crane. The overall project includes the construction of around 30 buildings, including the main and VIP terminals, air traffic control tower, a hospital, sport complex, aviation school and numerous hangars and cargo buildings. With the project now close to completion, numbers are reducing. “As of today,” Mr Bakkal said, “we are decreasing the equipment; we have only 283 machines today on site.”

Timing and technology He receives daily reports from each member of his management team, plus as many as 350 emails a day, detailing orders, costs, delivery times and equipment updates.

View of the terminal building and runway system from the new air traffic control tower

“We know each and every product delivery time and installation time and, for technological equipment that might be subject to upgrade, we push the purchasing to the end as much as possible,” he said. Clearly, timing is a crucial factor for the sophisticated technology that is now required to be integrated into the fabric of the building. “A computer you purchased three years ago might now be obsolete,” he said. “It’s also applicable for the CCTV cameras, immigration office software and equipment, etc. “Over the four years I’ve been her, the systems have been changing, technology is changing – and this is a smart building – I would say an intelligent building – and the newest technologies are being input. You have to plan and incorporate these changes into the construction. “You need to push the button at the latest moment you can, and bring all this equipment to the site at the very end of the process.” With a matter of weeks left for delivery of the project, the final challenge for Polimeks is the organisation of a large team of carpenters, who must quickly construct frameworks for departure gates, office spaces, information desks, retail outlets, etc. They must work alongside other skilled workers, creating the interior detail of the terminal – including countless traditional symbols, such as the Rub El Hizb, the eight-pointed star seen on many national buildings. At the same time, teams will complete the runway paving and continue the work of landscaping that was underway even at the height of the terminal’s construction. iC

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK Latin America

Growth may have to wait Amid general economic stress, the Petrobras scandal has caused investors to shy away, not only from Brazil, but also from neighbouring countries. Scott Hazelton of HIS Global Insight reports. s the global economy stagnates, old problems surface in Latin America. Brazil’s recession continues, with industrial production declining sharply and corruption scandals adding to government dysfunction. Venezuela’s oil dependent economy is in chaos with huge deficits, hyperinflation, currency devaluation and collapsing investment. On the plus side, Chile, Peru and Colombia will benefit from sound fiscal and economic policies, trade alliances and an eventual upturn in commodity prices. Argentina’s new government has lifted currency controls, removed farm export taxes, cut personal income taxes, resolved debt disputes, and successfully returned to the bond market. The economic outlook for Latin America sees recession continuing in 2016 as regional GDP slides a further 1.3%. Modest growth returns in 2017 at 1.4%, accelerating to 2.0% in 2018.

A

Brazil The Brazilian economy, which heavily influences the regional average, is falling deeper into recession, and the outlook is not encouraging. Markets, especially the foreign-exchange market, are celebrating the possible ousting of President Rousseff and assuming a new capable government will take over. We are not as optimistic about any swift improvement coming from a change in government. Consumer price inflation remains

very high and the fiscal deficit is huge (over 10% of GDP) and still growing. The government needs support to take austerity measures, but this is difficult because corruption scandals have reached the highest spheres of the political class. After a small and brief expansion in January, industrial production fell 2.5% month-on-month in February, pulled down by a 9.7% month-onmonth drop in automobile production. Total industrial production declined 9.8% year-onyear, led by a 25.8% plunge in capital goods and a 29.2% fall in automobiles. With political gridlock undermining business sentiment, investment will drop more than previously anticipated. After a 3.8% contraction in 2015, real GDP is now projected to decrease 4.0% in 2016 and 0.7% in 2017 before recovering just 1.0% in 2018.

Argentina There is cautious optimism in Argentina as the new government has an ambitious reform agenda, but the challenges require compromise and political brokerage. Improvement in the economic outlook is constrained by the uncertainty that reforms will be fully implemented soon. Swift passage and execution of such reforms is key to regaining market confidence and providing the incentives for new investment. The reduction of import barriers and export taxes should help the manufacturing sector. Import barriers have come down in terms of paperwork and access

to foreign exchange, and importers will no longer have to disclose information on their cost structure and price setting mechanisms. Productivity gains in Argentina during the last 50 years have averaged only 0.4%, according to the Inter-American Development Bank. To increase this number to 3.0% and reach economic growth rates close to 5.0%, Argentina needs to raise its investment-to-GDP ratio above 25% (it was19.4% in 2014).

Colombia Despite low oil prices and economic deceleration, Colombia is expected to still achieve 2.7% growth in 2017. Growth will be driven by private consumption and investment (30% of GDP during 2014). The implementation of the infrastructure programme should also boost the economy. The challenge for Colombia is that lower oil prices keep forcing it to make adjustments to manage its economy, with decreased investment flows to the sector, lower oil export revenues, and less money in state coffers.

Peru and Chile Peru and Chile will continue to recover from a slowdown in 2014, although commodity prices (mainly copper) will preclude a strong rebound. Sound macroeconomic fundamentals and a dynamic domestic economy will drive further expansion of these two economies during 2016 and especially 2017 and beyond. The relative strength of Latin America compared to the world is evident in Figure 1. Latin American construction spending will contract once again in 2016, and post gains at below global rates over the forecast. Brazil combines with Venezuela to drive down the outlook, but only Colombia grows at above world average rates. Within Latin America, Brazil dominates not just with size, but also the degree to which alleged corruption affects the construction market. The Petrobras investigation is creating negative effects beyond the energy sector, including shipbuilding, airports and highways, with the investigated companies responsible for 8 of the 10 largest public works projects in the country. Slower economic growth is affecting projects across the region. Chile is seeing slowing in the mining sector and all associated activities with business confidence in the construction sector sliding from 2014. Ecuador has cut public investment into

infrastructure in response to falling oil revenues. We expect modest recoveries in both cases as commodity prices stabilize in 2016 and show moderate growth in 2017. Residential construction is slowing, largely due to Brazil, where credit restrictions, weak household income and the end of government investment programs are depressing the market. Infrastructure spending, vitally needed to

advance the region’s economies, bears the brunt of the slowdown as fiscal problems limit public investment. Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela all reduced spending in 2014 and 2015, and will remain parsimonious in 2016. Apart from Venezuela, growth will return, but it will be limited. Infrastructure construction is the largest construction component in Latin America; accounting for almost half of

Total Construction Average growth 2020-25

construction spending in the region. Brazil and Argentina have the largest markets for infrastructure, and are among the most exposed to economic slowdown and fiscal challenges. Thus, infrastructure spending for the region will average just 1% growth over the next five years, hindering total construction market growth. The growth leader is non-residential construction, which will see growth of 1.5%. iC

Corruption, chaos... and hope for the future Whether the future for Latin America is bright or blighted, the region's governments are driving forward with projects which have the potential to transform the lives of millions. Mike Hayes and Cristián Peters report. orking with a new set of standards, ISO 9000, construction equipment companies in Latin America have been given an opportunity to develop their manufacturing processes and enhance their products. A new emphasis on risk management is also being seen as a major step forward in ensuring high standards in locally manufactured equipment. And speaking of sources of pride, one of Latin America’s crowning engineering achievements is the Panama Canal, set to open its new expanded waterways and locks – potentially doubling its capacity. And speaking of growth, BMI Research said of the region, “We hold a positive view on the Latin America regional construction industry... over the next five years, supported by a strong project pipeline, improving business

environment, and low base effects." The organisation went on to say, “However, political risks and currency depreciation present some downside risks to our forecasts for the region.” No, it’s not all good news, but there clearly is some to be found. For example, while the problems emanating from Brazil’s energy and construction industries are well documented (the bribery and corruption scandal, for instance, that recently resulted in a 19year jail sentence being handed down to energy tycoon Marcolo Odebrecht), and there is a sense that all such work has ground to a halt, there are still many significant projects moving forward in the country.

PPP projects favoured In Salvador, capital of Bahia state, for example, work is advancing rapidly on the city’s metro system. This US$ 1 billion public-private partnership (PPP) project between the government of Bahia and CCR began in 2013, with a view to constructing two lines with a total of 41 km and 23 stations. The lines are forecast to be operational in 2017. The contract also calls for the construction of nine bus terminals, and CCR is tasked with supplying 40 fourcarriage trains, as well as all electrical systems and relevant automation.

CCR itself has the concession to run the line for the next 30 years. According to the contract, the government gives CCR an annual payment of around US$ 32 million, with full payment for the project being made only when the line is in full operation. The president of CCR said, “This is the magic of the project. We receive only part of this every year, corresponding to the advances, while the work is not finished.” Investment is also being made in alternative energy sources in the country – and there are clearly opprotunities here for overseas contractors and manufacturers. Italian company Enel Green Power won the contract for the construction of a US$ 400 million solar power plant in the state of Bahia. The Ituverava solar plant will generate 254 MW of power and is the largest of a number of renewable energy projects currently being undertaken in the country by Enel Green. Expected to be in service by 2017, the Ituverava plant will contribute to a total of 1.65 GW of electricity generated in Brazil by Enel Green projects. When completed, the plant will supply more than 550 GWh per year, enough to meet the annual energy consumption needs of around 268,000 households in Brazil. The Ituverava project was awarded to Enel Green through a competitive auction in November 2014. A second auction, in 2015, saw the company win 553 mW of a potential 834 mW capacity on offer. It is reported that Enel Green plans to invest almost US$ 10 billion over the next five years, primarily in the enhancement of generation capacity. The company will look to add over 7 GW of new capacity before the end of this decade, predominantly in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil.

Energy tycoon Marcelo Odebrecht was recently sentenced to 19 years in prison for his part in the Petrobras scandal

within the buildings set to host the 2016 Olympic Games in August. How far the Olympic construction programme can go to improve the fortunes of Brazil’s ailing construction sector, is yet to be seen. Certainly in Colombia, the development of infrastructure is currently viewed not simply as a goal in itself, but also as a means to develop other economic activities. Every dollar invested in infrastructure represents a potential 40 cents towards economic growth. Largely for this reason, the government implemented the 4G programme. Within it are plans for 30 roadbuilding projects, built on a PPP basis. In total, some 8,000 km of roads are being built at a cost of around US$ 2 billion. Colombia’s Ministry of Finance estimates the effect of these projects will be a growth of 1.5% in GDP, while the work itself is likely to generate between 180,000 and 450,000 jobs. From a ‘place to do business’ perspective, travel times within the country are expected to be cut by an average of up to 30%, allowing for countless new opportunities as general movement is made easier and transportation and vehicle operation costs are drastically reduced. Allied with the highway expansion, the government has recognised the need for urban improvement, as well as greater transportation opportunities by air, sea and also river. In 2014, The National Development Plan was initiated, with the aim of ensuring the ultimate success of 4G. Within the fouryear plan, improving the infrastructure of Colombian cities is key, including the construction of ports, airports and railways. In 2014, the first sections of the Central Railway Corridor –

Anti-corruption policies Mega-projects such as this, however, cannot disguise the fact that the value of Brazil’s construction industry has been flat for some time, primarily due to a lack of business confidence, following the Petrobras scandal. It is clearly hoped that, following the Marcelo Odebrecht sentencing – along with further positive action from the ‘Operation Lava Jato’ anti-corruption programme – a rejuvinated construction industry can aid the country’s economic recovery. One area in which construction is feverishly moving forward is

The Ituverava solar power project, located 800 km from Salvador, will have a capacity of 254 mW and is expected to come online in 2017

a rail infrastructure network running between Bogotå, Blencito, La Dorada and Chiriguanå – were opened at a cost of US$ 63 million. In addition, there are currently seven other private projects in the offing. In terms of maritime infrastructure investments, various projects are underway, such as the Puerto Nuevo Cienaga in Magdalena. Here, in an effort to facilitate coal exports in the country, a viaduct and access channel are being constructed, along with dredging work at the Port Brisa Dibulla in Guajira. Last year, the modernisation of the terminal at Simon Bolivar International Airport in Santa Maria began, with a reported investment of US$ 33 million. Similarly, terminals at as many as ten city airports are being upgraded at a cost of more than US$ 120 million. Over the next four years, 15 electrical infrastructure projects are planned as part of the national and regional transmission systems (STN and STR, respectively), including a network of electrical substations. The country is also planning a significant upgrade to its water infrastructure, including the construction of wastewater and water treatment plants, as well as the development of wastewater tunnel networks. One of these, the Bello wastewater treatment plant in Medellin, northwest of Bogota, is being remodelled and will become the largest in the country. Scheduled to open this year, the new station will have a 7.7 km tunnel which will carry 6.5 m3 of wastewater from the cities of Medellin and Bello to a plant where they will be treated and then discharged into the Medellín river. system will remove 123 tonnes per day of residual contamination of the river and will cost around US$ 570 million. Argentina’s new president, Mauricio Macri, has moved fast to implement reforms to boost the country’s economy – bringing expectations of a financial upturn in the country. In a few short months, for example, the new government eliminated export taxes and devalued its currency. Although inflation is rising, the government is hopeful that negotiation with creditors will result in Argentina regaining access to international capital markets.

Economies and scale As the economy adapts to new macroeconomic policies, Argentina must still deal with external threats such as the slowing economy in Brazil and the falling price of raw materials – a factor that affects almost all of Latin America. Manuel Montes, an engineer and the director of architecture of the Province of San Juan, says the construction industry has suffered, along with the country’s economy. He said, “We believe that the national government knows the importance of our activity as a generator of employment and development, so we expect improvements in the coming months. As each new government, there is hope.” According to the executive, whose function is to direct the entity responsible for the maintenance of public buildings in San Juan, the work plan recently announced by the new president for the next four months is a good sign for the sector as a whole. Meanwhile, Roberto Ivan Giacovero, president of the contractor Vilder S.A., said, “The economic situation in the country will start slow but firm in 2016.” At the same time, he warns of some “anger gaining momentum in mid-year, as some delays facing the sector are exceeded.” In January this year, Portland cement mills shipped around 862,000 tonnes, including exports, which represents a fall of 8% from the previous month and a fall of 8.7% over the same period in 2015. The government has now taken the decision to accelerate its public works plan, prioritising issues such as flood prevention, housing, public transport, roads and water supply In the province of Cordoba, for example, the construction of a reinforced concrete aqueduct is currently underway.

The construction team celebrates a breakthrough on one of the lines of Brazil’s Sao Paulo subway system

The structure, being built by the international contractor ALE, will have a length of 1075 m. In the province of San Juan, several major projects are being studied by the Ministry of Public Works, including Sports City, a complex for competitive sports development, and a redesign of the renowned public park, Parque de Mayo, as well as numerous cultural works, schools and hospitals. Once the long-awaited Agua Negra tunnel is completed, San Juan will be connected with the region of Coquimbo in Chile, which it is hoped will help to reignite the region’s economy. In Peru last year, the government, along with private investment input, made plans for a number of large projects, with a total value of around US$ 7 billion, including some US$ 3 billion for infrastructure development. Here, the construction sector makes up 5% of GDP and is one of the few seeing growth (and potential for further growth). Peru’s Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Milton von Hesse, recently said, “We think that there’s an opportunity to devise public policy that contributes to the population’s access to services and improves the quality of life.” An example is the ongoing construction of the US$ 4 billion Gasoducto Sur Peruano gas pipeline, being operated as a PPP project. The 725 km pipeline will link the Camisea gas wells to Lima and is expected to provide millions of residents with clean and cheap energy. The housing minister points to the Gasoducto Sur Peruano gas pipeline as an example for the future. Once completed the $4 billion public-private partnership (PPP) project linking the Camisea gas wells to Lima will cover a distance of more than 725 km and distribute clean cheap energy to millions. Perhaps the last word should go to BMI Research, with their optimistic predictions for the region. They say, “We currently forecast real construction industry growth for the region…on the back of low base effects, a robust project pipeline, and a strong push for reform in key markets, which we expect will improve the business environment and attract greater private investment.” iC

CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION Paving the way to new heights

Paving the way to The last 12 months have been awash with new launches by companies across the globe. For the concrete sector, it was no different, as Joe Malone discovers. n the wake of Bauma, Germany, companies will be moving on to their next set of innovations, looking for new ideas and features to improve their existing products. There were plenty of new launches over the last 12 months, some of which, were presented for the first time at the trade show in Munich. Austrian-based formwork company Doka used Bauma, as a chance to launch its latest products, in the shape of its Dokaflex 30 tec, Framax Xlife and Dokadek 30. The Dokaflex 30 tec is a speedy hand-set system for floor-slabs, which Doka claims combines proven technology with the I tec 20 composite formwork beam as a primary beam, while scoring high marks on speed of use and cost-efficiency. The composite formwork beam I tec 20 has a load-bearing capacity 80% higher than conventional timber formwork beams. Therefore, spacing between the floor props is wider. While the number of floor props varies from job to job, they can be reduced by up to one third. Fewer individual parts reduce the work needed for erection and dismantling which means less labour time and fewer costs. The secondary beams are H20 beams, and the beam flange markings – which are spaced 50 cm apart – make assembly a speedy and safe routine. A secondary beam stabiliser keeps the beams from tipping over, while the panel size and

sheet facing can be selected to suit jobsite s requirements. r Doka also said that as well as being highly versatile, the slab formwork system h is i also easy to handle, making it a major benefi t for the site crew. The clear visual b diff d erentiation between I tec 20 and H20 beams also prevents mix-ups and also b reduces search times. r Meanwhile, the company also launched Framax Xlife plus at Bauma, which is says F is i the latest innovation of Doka’s framed formwork. f The form tie technology has no wearing parts, and Doka said the system is p outstanding for forming in-situ concrete o walls, while helping to maximise speed on w site. s can be operated from one side and has The fform-tie technology h l no wearing parts, which the company said ensured an even faster working pace. At 1.35m, the form-tie grid is wide, and can offer a 12% cost saving, according to Doka, compared to a 1.2m form-tie grid. Doka also showcased its Dokadek 30, which is a beamless, handset formwork system designed as a lightweight steel construction faced with a wood/plastic-composite sheet. The system combines the advantages of a panel floor formwork system with those of Dokaflex floor formwork. Jürgen Obiegli, chairman of executive board, said, “Doka made a commitment to building the lead in formwork technology. “This is the reason we continue developing measures to boost construction efficiency and putting them into practice systematically.

“Firstly, in formwork systems, and secondly in n the technical services to go with them.” He added that Doka formwork solutions always ays come as a package that delivers tangible benefits to its customers.

Saving time In the UK, Peri has provided significant jobsite time savings thanks to its unique scaffolding solution for the tunnel works on the Farringdon Station Crossrail project. The project is aimed at providing a quicker and more direct travel route across the capital, and the new railway will be a high frequency, high capacity service linking 40 stations via 21 km of new twin-bore tunnels under central London and the Docklands. To construct the tunnels at Farringdon Station, mobile scaffolding with a diameter of more than 8m was required to enable both waterproofing and spray concrete lining. Additionally, the

Paschal’s new product Multip is designed such that once it has been fixed to the formwork, the system merely needs to be unfolded Cifa boasts a three-line range: carbotech, steeltech and classic

scaffolding design required access for trucks to enter the tunnel so concrete work could run simultaneously. Peri said that one of its challenges was to use a castor-mounted scaffolding structure, which significantly restricted the weight available for Peri and the contractor to work with. Also, the requirement for the scaffolding to enable concrete spray lining meant the structure would be too wide for movement along the tunnel. Peri’s was able to tailor the Peri UP system so it could fit detachable cantilevered console brackets on the edges of the structure to allow waterproofing construction to take place. Once waterproofing was completed, the brackets could also be used for the concrete spraying, which enabled the work to be completed in a shorter period of time for the client. Another major challenge for Peri was to incorporate the requirement for truck access. The company had to ensure that its scaffolding structure was meticulously designed to ensure worker safety, while also ensuring that it could be supported on the castors. The scaffolding was therefore designed with a passageway through the middle of the structure, which was a UK-first for Peri. The 4.4 m high by 3 m wide opening enabled the trucks to pass through without disrupting the waterproofing works. At Paschal, the ladders, coverings and railings are integrated into the complete system unit so that the unit can be transported and set up without having to assemble component parts, and without the need for on-site additions or modifications. The setting and releasing of connecting pieces, the attaching or removing of crane attachments and also the releasing of

Fast-track project in UAE RMD Kwikform products used for Al Jazeera Tower n Abu Dhabi, RMD Kwikform played a key part in the residential and commercial Al Jazeera Tower. As a fast-track project, the contractor required multiple solutions to form the walls, columns and slabs of the building. RMD Kwikform’s Prop Tableform slab system and Rapidclimb climbing formwork were used on the project, along with wall formwork using superslim soldiers and GTX beams, and KwikColumn for the Columns formwork. As the slab support was constructed into tables, the onsite team could simply move tables from one floor to the next with no dismantling or re-erection required, reducing the slab construction cycle time, and speeding up the construction process. With the availability of crane support, the cores of the towers could be cast using the integrated Rapidclimb climbing formwork system, with second fixing safely conducted using the trailing access platforms. Due to the compact nature of Rapidclimb, the onsite team opted to follow the core construction casting slabs as soon as the core section was completed. With site assistance technicians from RMD Kwikform supporting the erection teams, the time needed to complete a core and slab section was reduced by up to 50% from the initial phases of the project to the top, 40th floor. Ahmed Atalla of RMD Kwikform, said: “The key to this project was to deliver the most time and cost-effective solution to the contractor that would allow the team onsite to meet its very demanding programme time. “Because the business was familiar with our table formwork they recognised the benefits in using this system for the slab construction.” He added, “When it came to the core formwork, this was the first project in Abu Dhabi to use the Rapidclimb climbing formwork solution. As the project progressed, the team were able to reduce the time it took to complete pours, taking full advantage of the reusable wall formwork panels integrated into the Rapidclimb system.”

fixed tie rods can be carried out quickly and safely, said the company. When the formwork units are moved, the Multip remains attached to the formwork and is then simply moved together with the formwork.

Full range Italian manufacturer Pilosio also attended Bauma, and the company presented the full range of formwork for walls floors and ceilings, shoring for slabs and scaffolding in steel and aluminium, in addition to the new system for tunnels and viaducts. It said the entire range of products had been refined over the past few years. In the formwork for walls series, a new lightweight aluminium formwork for the residential sector was presented, as well as formwork such as Minimag, P300, Magnum Evo in galvanised steel, the Maximix system in wood and Svelt M for curved walls. There was also Pilosio’s guided climbing system, the new 240 climbing brackets, the new wind screen protection system and 150 support bracket. Also on show was the formwork for elevator shafts with conical stripping corners, and a retaining wall system. The company created a gallery made of mixed steel and wood components for shoring system for tunnels and heavy duty, and a pillar with special formworks and the Maximix system. As for the range of systems for casting slabs, Pilosio presented

Diversification Moving on to the concrete pump manufacturers, Cifa said it continues to implement the product strategy that emphasises diversification of the range based on its three lines – carbotech, steeltech and classic. The company’s carbotech range boasts the K45H, K53H and K60H truck mounted pumps. The K45H represents the best-seller in the range and was recently the focus of an advancement that allowed the weight margin to be increased to 32 tonnes on 4 axles. The K45H has a 45 m arm, and five sections including the last two in composite material. The K45H mounts the new 1608EC pumping unit, a unit that combines performance and light weight, which has a closed circuit with a maximum capacity of 160 m³/h, 80 bar maximum pressure and electronic management. The K53H and K60H are something completely new for the German market, and can be fitted on four and five axle vehicle chassis. The solution on five axles even complies with the weight limits in the most restrictive countries such as Germany. In the company’s steeltech range, the K36L – which was launched at Bauma - was completely redesigned to comply with

the weight limits for three axle chassis at 26 tonnes, it claimed. It mounts a five-section arm in steel with Z folding and can be personalised by the customer with a vast selection of equipment. Finally, in its classic range, the K40C – which also launched at Bauma – has a 40 m long arm, five sections with RZ folding and an open circuit pumping unit with a maximum capacity of 160 m³/h and 70 bar maximum pressure on the concrete. Cifa said that this is a pump designed to be reliable and simple without sacrificing any major features. For the truck mixers, Cifa has also divided up the range into segments with the heavy duty (HD), super light (SL) SLX, energya (E) and Italia RH-Y ranges. The energya range (hybrid plug-in mixer truck) was on display at Bauma, as well as the model E9 HD range, and the model HD 15. For its truck mixer pumps, the company continues its evolution of the magnum range. The MK25H carbotech was also on display at Bauma, which has been further improved with the latest design and technical advancements derived from use of the machinery in job sites all over Europe.

Liebherr has launched its new 50 M5 XXT truck mounted concrete pump, claiming many new innovations

Tried and tested Meanwhile, Putzmeister continues to showcase its tried and proven truck mixer concrete pumps – the PUMI 25-4 and the 28-4 NEW Generation. The most important advancements include the unique stepless support, the four-arm distributing boom, the new S-pump, the Ergonic 2.0 control and technologies for reduced operating costs and exhaust and noise emissions. The PUMI 25-4 and the 28-4 NEW Generation are causing a stir with numerous innovations. The stepless support, which offers incredible flexibility on constricted sites in particular, is an absolute novelty. Just like the four-arm distributing boom with optimised slip characteristics and maximum working range. Easier and safer operation, thanks not least to the extensive lighting concept and the new computer-assisted Ergonic 2.0

SBM’s Linemix 3000 is setting new standards to produce concrete directly on site

control. The newly developed S-piston pump with large hopper, ideal accessibility and optimised performance data was developed specifically for PUMI applications. In order to counteract wear, Putzmeister has further refined the design of its machines. The torsion-resistant integral frame and shape-optimised mixer drum ensure a consistent axle load distribution, preserving the machine over the long term and keeping operating costs low. The new PUMIs are proving to be eco-friendly and economic thanks to lower operating fluid consumption and reduced exhaust and noise emissions. Chinese manufacturer Shantui has launched its truck mounted pump series – the HJC5120THB-12 and HJC5120THB-16 – which are powered by a Volvo engine. They feature stronger power, excellent performance, and high reliability. The pumping hydraulic system adopts dual-pump dual-circuit constant-power open-loop hydraulic system and German Rexroth oil pump. The main cylinder and swing cylinder are driven by two pumps separately. The swing cylinder features quick and powerful motions. The hydraulically controlled reversing mode guarantees more reliable and stable reversing motions for the main pumping line. The maximum capacity of the hopper is up to 800 l and the inner walls of hopper adopt arc-shaped design to eliminate dead spaces for material deposits. The high wear-resistant wearing plate and cutting ring sufficiently cut down the user’s operating cost. The S-pipe valve features low height difference and achieves smoother concrete flow. The main electronic control units adopt originally imported products, featuring simple system, low unit number, and high reliability, said Shantui. The central lubrication mode is adopted so that the hydraulically controlled followup grease pump guarantees the lubrication effects. All lubrication points of the multiplate progressive grease distributor are fitted with blockage indicator to ease the maintenance and checking. In event of blockage in any oil line, the other oil lines can still function normally.

New innovations German company Liebherr has launched its new 50 M5 XXT truck mounted concrete pump. The vehicle, positioned in the 50-metre class, includes many new innovations, it said. The development is focused in particular on optimising the unladen weight and the dimensions. The new 50 M5 XXT extends the range of truck mounted concrete pumps from

The alternating pipework close to the boom ensures uniform movements over the construction site. With a vertical reach of 49.1 m and a horizontal reach of 44.4 m, the compactly constructed truck mounted concrete pump provides impressive working ranges. Moving towards concrete plants, Ammann has its concrete plants and mixers developed by Ammann Elba, the company created when German-based Elba was acquired in 2014. The new CBS Elba concrete mixing plant is designed for small- to medium-sized businesses seeking flexible concrete plant solutions. The company said that it featured state-of-the-art design based on customers’ needs, and offers output ranges from 105 m³/h to 160 m³/h. The basic unit can accommodate both EMS and EMDW single-shaft and twin-shaft mixers with a hardened concrete output volume ranging from 2 m³ to 3.5 m³. Ammann said the CBS Elba offered easy, low-cost transportation for stationary and semi-mobile operation. Finally, SBM said its SBM Linemix 3000 is setting new standards to produce concrete directly on site. The high-performance concrete mixing plant SBM Linemix 3000 CM 410-7 H, which produces concrete for tubbings (tunnel lining elements), represents an essential link in the chain of specialists working on construction sites. In fact, Jürgen Steinhauser, responsible project manager of Austrian-based Hilti & Jehle, said of SBM’ Linemix 3000, “Only such a powerful and reliable plant can produce a total of 120,000 m³ high performance concrete for 50,000 tubbings in time in year-round 24-hour-operation.” iC

Meva launches Mammut XT at Bauma Formwork, although a small part of a project, can have effect on the rest nother company who launched a new product at Bauma was German formwork company Meva. The company presented its new Mammut XT formwork system, offering all three tying methods in one system. The Mammut XT is based on the Mammut 350 system, and has a load capacity of 100kN/m². Jens Lutzow, marketing director of Meva, said, “2 to 3% of the cost on a construction job is in the formwork account. This may not sound like much, but it affects 90% of the construction job, which is in concrete. “Therefore, we believe it is essential to make the best quality formwork, Meva’s new Mammut XT meaning a top-of-the-range 2% will uses a combi tie system have a positive effect on the rest of the job.” The combi tie system means you can tie from one side only using DW 20 tie-rods and plastic sleeves, tie from one side only using taper ties without plastic sleeve, and, tie from both sides with DW 20 or DW 15 tie rods and plastic sleeves. There are no conversions, modifications or add-ons required when switching from one to two sided tying, saving time and effort, as the number of parts is reduced by 50%.

CRUSHING & SCREENING Cutting the problem down to size

As the debate rumbles on over mobile or stationary crushing and screening plants, Mike Hayes looks at some of the latest innovations on the market.

Cutting the problem down to size Terex Finlay’s new I-140 impact crusher is put through its paces on quarry duty

ith a vital role in the supply of aggregates to the construction industry, the one constant for crushing and screening equipment is that it’s able to take a hammering. The need for reliability under severely testing conditions is as true for the largest quarry-based stationary crushing and screening machines as it is for small bucket crusher attachments on residential demolition sites. Another increasingly important element for the industry today is mobility. The evergrowing manpower, machinery and fuel costs of moving quarried rocks to stationary crushing machines has created demand for equipment that can get to wherever the current rock face is located. If the mountain won’t come to the crusher, so to speak. Jaideep Shekhar, country manager for Terex Finlay in India, recently said, “Today as per the market trend, 65-70% of the crushing aggregate market is dominated by mobile plants, consisting both of wheel and track mounted plants, within which the ratio

W

Telsmith’s T900 cone crusher has a capacity output range up to 2,100 mtph

is greatly in favour of track mounted units. The demand for track mounted plants is being led with the emergence of the segment subcontractors, who have taken over the nitty-gritty of producing aggregates and running quarries in a big way. “These subcontractors prefer compact equipment which they can move from site to site at a rapid pace with minimal logistical hassles, given the large volumes of jobs at hand.” That said, the clear priority is delivering volume at the right price, which is where the lines can become blurred between large stationary and mobile plants.

Bigger the better? In 2012, proving that size and mobility are not mutually exclusive, Metso produced the world’s largest fully mobile jaw crusher plant – the Lokotrack LT200E. Given its mammoth size, the machine is incredibly versatile and manoeuvrable, with turntables speeding up the relocation of the crusher and its conveying system. Once delivered to the mobile apron feeder by excavator, the aggregate is lifted to the mobile jaw crusher, where the vibrating grizzly separates the undersize aggregate, while the oversize is crushed. The main conveyor system carries the primary product to the mobile stacker, which transfers it to the field conveyor, before finally arriving at the stacking conveyor. This all-electric machine weighs in at 850 tonnes, making its mobility a real feat of engineering. The LT200E’s nominal capacity is 2,500 mtph, with feed size up to 1,200 mm. For delivering volume reliably, Telsmith believes it has the answer in the heavy duty T900 cone crusher, which it says has been engineered to deliver maximum uptime, productivity, safety and ease of maintenance. With a capacity output range from 550 to 2,100 mtph, and with a feed size of up to 15 inches (381 mm), the T900 is rated with the largest clearing stroke in The soon-to-be-launched C-1540 direct drive cone crusher from Terex Finlay

A different class of screen 5,000 mtph from Haver & Boecker’s F-class vibrating screen aver & Boecker offers its F-class vibrating screen, built primarily for scalping and classifying ores, minerals, stones, sand and gravel. Featuring double eccentric shaft, the screen’s design is ideal for applications requiring minimal vibration transmission during operation. The system uses four-bearing technology (four high-performance, double spherical roller bearings) to minimise structural vibration and deliver a consistent stroke. A double eccentric shaft creates a constant positive stroke that can maintain its momentum, even during material volume spikes. This both maximises screening efficiency and works equally well in both wet and dry applications. Designed for hightonnage outputs, the F-class screen can process as much as 5,000 mtph while quickly and accurately sizing a wide range of materials.

its class, along with a highest in class crushing force, it claimed. According to Telsmith’s director of engineering, Albert Van Mullem, the company places a huge emphasis on the safety and serviceability of the machine. “Its large clearing circuit is engineered to safely and quickly allow any uncrushable materials to pass,” he said, “and its numerous innovative serviceability features differentiate the T900 from conventional units that typically require significantly more time in routine service.” The T900 also has an anti-spin feature that prevents head spin to extend manganese life. Key components of the crusher are position on top of the machine, for ease of access. The machine operates with large hybrid bearings, which offer both static and dynamic lift, assisting with the carrying of the crushing forces. In China, the Zhongshan Xinlong Aggregate Co in Guangdong Province operates the largest quarry in the area, with total annual sales of more than CNY 10 billion (US$ 1.54 billion). To cope with increasing demand, the company recently made plans to upgrade its 2,000 mtph aggregate. It was established that there were many operational efficiencies to be gained through upgrading the company’s tertiary crushers, as the current locally-made cone crushers were experiencing too much downtime. Environmental benefits were also sought, including reduced emissions and lower fuel consumption. Zhongshan Xinlong contacted Sandvik, which offered the solution of four CH870 cone crushers to produce end product fractions of 28-24 mm 2411 mm, 11-5 mm and 5-0 mm.

The MC380X modular cone crushing plant from Terex Mineral Processing Systems

The CH870 crusher has a large eccentric throw and high eccentric speed, resulting in more rock-on-rock crushing in the crushing chamber and improving the shape of the end product. Operational downtime is also greatly reduced, adding low cost per tonne production to the benefits of the new equipment. The machine has a robust design, with a hydraulically supported main shaft, supported at both ends. Its constant intake adds to its sturdiness, while delivering operational flexibility, and the crusher is well suited to high-reduction tertiary applications. The crushers were supplied to Zhongshan Xinlong as a

complete package, with a Hydroset system providing safety and setting-adjustment functions, while ASR could automatically adapt the crushers to feed conditions. Sandvik says it was also able to offer a wide selection of crushing chamber options for the CH870. This has given the aggregates company the ability to rapidly optimisation its crushing process, allowing for changes in future crushing specifications.

Keeping it simple A new cone crushing plant for aggregate and mining companies has recently been launched by Terex Minerals Processing Systems (Terex MPS), one of the world leaders in materials processing technology, based in the US. The MC380X modular cone plant features the Terex Cedarapids high performance MVP380X cone crusher and promises a combination of higher productivity and ease of use. Enhancements to the new machine include high speed clearance of jammed material, quick crusher separation capability for faster manganese changes, and user friendly computer controls, enclosed in a robust weather-protected control panel. The MC380X also comes with an extra-heavy duty I-beam frame, and a galvanised steel structure, including

Twin-drive crushing power New VSI rotor centrifugal crushers from BHS-Sonthofen erman-based crushing technology specialist BHS-Sonthofen recently showcased its new VSI rotor centrifugal crushers with twin drive, which promise a throughput rate of up to 580 mtph. The new machine is unchanged from the previous version, other than the addition of the second drive, which has added considerably more stability and almost twice the power to the shaft of the rotor. This in turn translates to greater efficiency and lower maintenance. The first of the new machines, RSMX 1222, with a drive power of 2 x 250 kW, is now being used in a goldmine in China. There it is processing granite with a feeding size of up to 70 mm into sand with grain sizes between 0 and 5 mm, and gravel with a grade between 5 and 20 mm.

New BC bucket crushers New generaton BC 2500 and BC 3700 from Atlas Copco or ultimate mobility, Atlas Copco has brought to the market a new generation of BC bucket crushers, designed for carriers from 22-38 tonnes. The BC 2500 and BC 3700 crushers are designed for ‘small’ demolition, recycling and road construction applications, where, according to Atlas, they can be an efficient alternative to a mobile jaw crusher. With a capacity of up to 110 mtph, the crushers’ circular crushing cycle improves performance, with up to 80% higher output than previous BC models. The system, which comprises two hydraulic motors, provides good torque and full loading capacity can be used without risk of blockages. Atlas Copco says the intuitive functionality of the crushers eliminates the need for craftsmanlike operators, and simple controls and easy adjustment can improve efficiency and reduce costs.

walkways, stairs and guard rails as standard. The modular structure of the machine is bolted together on site which, according to Terex MPS, makes setting up easy and reduces the need for any complicated tools. Pre-wired with a plug and play design, the modules require minimum on-site wiring. At the launch of the plant, Terex MPS’s Mark Crooks said he was proud to see the MC380X “improving our application capabilities between 150–450 mtph and, in particular, showcasing the innovative design and modular plant controls created by our experienced engineering team.” Another machine from the Terex family that promises both flexibility and durability is Terex Finlay’s new I-140 impact crusher, exhibited at this year’s Bauma, Munich. Variable speed options give it flexibility across a number of different operational environments, including recycling, mining and quarrying applications. The standard hopper capacity is an impressive 6 m3, and the flow of material has been improved by an increase in the widths of the machine’s components, compared with previous models. With an advanced electronic control system and a fully hydraulic apron setting assist, operators will certainly see the benefits of the I-140’s convenient and efficient adjustments. Furthermore, there is an optional by-pass conveyor, allowing material from the integrated pre-screen to be diverted to a stockpile. Terex Finlay says it is set to launch another new machine, at the UK’s Hillhead show – the direct drive C-1540 cone crusher. Also, at the UK’s Hillhead show in June, Terex Finlay will introduce a new direct-drive variant of its C-1540 cone crusher. Built around the design of the proven Terex 1000 cone crusher, the C-1540’s crushing chamber is fitted with hydraulic tramp relief system and advanced load sensing hydraulics to maximize plant efficiency. The large hopper/feeder has an automated

metal detection and purge system to protect the cone and reduce downtime by removing metal contaminants. With its diesel-electric drive, the Mobicone MCO 11 Pro crusher from Kleemann can process up to 470 mtph. Efficiency, high on the agenda of most aggregates companies, can also be increased with the use of an optional external power supply. A useful feature of the MCO 11 Pro is its adaptability in terms of obtaining optimal material flow, using a hydraulically driven movable feeding unit. The conveying capacity of the feeding conveyor is adapted depending on the level of the crusher, which always reaches its optimal filling height. There are more benefits to the MCO 11 Pro, including a touch control panel, clearly displaying machine status, plant functions and fault locations. In terms of that all-important mobility, the 48 tonne plant can be transported in one piece, without the need to disassemble machine parts and is therefore quickly ready for operation.

Going electric At this year’s Bauma, Powerscreen launched its electrically driven Warrior 1400XE mobile heavy duty screen, which it exhibited alongside its Premiertrak 600 jaw crusher. Powerscreen call it ‘a more environmentally aware approach to innovation’ and say the screen utilises efficient electrical components and is designed to deliver the lowest possible cost per tonne of material. At the same time, the 1400XE’s output is rated at a maximum 500 mtph. The screen can be powered in a number of ways, including

ockster’s R1100 series of impact crushers include either a new central control unit or a new radio remote control with display. The most important operating parameters, such as the rotor, feeder or motor speed, are easily adjusted using the new units. Moreover, the automatic mode, a quick-start possibility for bringing the system automatically into operation mode, can also now be started by remote control. The central control unit shows a schematic layout of all processes, which the company says will enable a very intuitive machine handling. There are also some nice features on Irock’s TC-20 track impact crusher, recently exhibited at World of Asphalt in the US. The machine has a fixed Hardox hopper with an 11.5 m3 capacity, which is paired with a 1.32 m by 4.88 m vibrating grizzly feeder (that’s 910 mm longer than comparable units). The TC-20 also features Irock’s exclusive Rock Box, an alternative to standard discharge chutes, which uses a shelf system with abrasion resistant wear bars that allow crushed material to build up and act as a wear liner. UTILITIES Utilising utility products

Utilising utility In a sector that boasts impressive machines, companies have gone that extra mile to ensure performance and operator comfort is enhanced. Joe Malone examines the latest products on the market. he utilities label covers a range of equipment, including horizontal directional drill rigs, pipelayers, trenchers, and small-scale equipment such as mini and midi excavators. Now that Germany’s Bauma has come to a close – after months of anticipation – it’s a good time to look at the latest products in this sector, following many new releases at the show last month. Firstly, US based manufacturer Ditch Witch has launched its new JT25 HDD. It features a two-speed thrust drive and an exclusive rotational drive with 5,420 Nm of torque, along with 27,000 lbs of thrust and pullback. Even with all this power, Ditch Witch said the JT25 is the quietest and most stable midsize drill on the market. Its streamlined, low-maintenance design means more uptime with less upkeep. Operator comfort is a current trend for improvement, and Ditch Witch has ensured its new JT25 HDD has all the new features to attract customers. large pipes or culverts below the single, heavy-duty rolling strut. Looking towards compact equipment in this sector, Doosan has launched the new 5 tonne DX57W-5 wheeled excavator which, in addition to complying with the latest Stage 3B emission regulations, incorporates many new features that increase performance, durability and fuel efficiency. The DX57W-5 has increased power from the 42.5 kW Doosan D24 4-cylinder engine which also offers convenience and lower costs, by meeting Stage 3B emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment technologies. The company said factory tests show a 15% increase in fuel efficiency, depending on the mode of operation and the work being done. A new ECO Gauge on the control panel helps the operator to lower fuel consumption by providing real time monitoring of fuel rate and there are auto idle and fuel efficiency menus. The availability of three power modes (Eco, Standard and Power) and three work modes (Digging, Breaker and Shear) improves controllability and versatility. Doosan has worked on improving operator comfort, and the new cab on the DX57W-5 offers more space for the operator and the controls for various functions have been grouped together for better ergonomics. The DX57W-5 has a new 7-inch TFT LCD

EQUIPMENT Atlas Copco ■ Trimble and Rototilt

Atlas Copco launches new RTEX Joe Malone, deputy editor of iC, attended nded the company’s product launch in February, ruary, in Antwerp, Belgium. tlas Copco has launched its new RTEX handheld breaker, boasting new operating principles – Constant Pressure Control, improved energy transfer and the new RTEX Power Chisel. The RTEX has the breaking capacity of a 30+ kg breaker, using only half as much compressed air whilst being 25% lighter. The RTEX offers huge savings and sets a world-leading benchmark for pneumatic technological innovation, claims the company, which added both its design and its deliverables break the mould. The 3-axes hand-and-arm vibration is below 5 m/s2 and, under these conditions, an operator can work up to eight times longer than with conventional breakers, according to the safety guidelines. This is possible due to the Constant Pressure Chamber on the top of the breaker which serves as advanced pneumatic suspension. The tool is more compact than a traditional breaker, which makes it easier to work with in constrained areas and gives a more ergonomic working position. Stiff handles and the Softstart function make it very easy to control the power of the RTEX. Olof Östensson, engineer at Atlas Copco, commented on the new launch, saying, “In a conventional breaker air is discharged each time the acting piston moves up or down. In the RTEX we discharge the air only once – on the piston´s return stroke.

A

“Then, the constant pressure from a chamber on the top of the RTEX pushes the piston down, and the pressure on top of the acting piston is constant and therefore does not generate vibrations as on conventional breakers, so there is no need for vibration damping.” Vladimir Kozlovskiy, president of construction tools division, added, “The best news about the RTEX is that it pays for itself. “The fact that you need a compressor only half the size or can use two breakers instead of one from the same energy source gives instant payback by paying less for the compressor. It is ergonomic and saves both money and the environment.” iC

Rototilt and Trimble work together Trimble and Rototilt have announced that excavator operators can now achieve accurate guidance when using a tiltrotator attachment. Per Väppling, vice president of marketing and sales at Rototilt, said, “We have completed successful tests together with Trimble, and are now able to connect the Rototilt Positioning Solution with the Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System. “This allows the operator to integrate the Rototilt tiltrotator with a Trimble grade control system to achieve significantly better precision and productivity.” The companies said that by using the Rototilt Positioning Solution together with the Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System, operators could know the attachment’s precise position relative to the excavation in progress. Ryan Kunisch, marketing director for Trimble’s civil engineering and construction division, said, “Our heavy equipment customers have been seeking a solution that allows excavator operators to leverage guidance for excavation but also control tilt rotator attachments “Working closely with Rototilt, we’ve been able to meet the need by optimising the Trimble grade control system’s performance on excavators equipped with Rototilt attachments allowing operators to be more accurate and efficient.” Control of the attachment’s tilt and rotation angles by the Rototilt Positioning Solution combined with precise positioning from Trimble can mean time and fuel savings for contractors, it is claimed. The new technology is also said to make work significantly easier for the operator, by making bucket position and orientation visible at all times, no matter how the bucket is rotated.

EQUIPMENT Avant Tecno ■ JCB

Avant Tecno’s new launches

The Avant e5 claims zero emissions

The new e5 and Avant 500 series are the latest products to hit the market from Finnish company. vant Tecno’s has launched its new e5 fully-electric batterypowered loader concept, which was on show at Bauma, Germany. The e5 is in the same size class as the Avant 500 series, offering zero emissions, extremely low noise and low running costs, according to the company. The e5 is said to have approximately the same technical capabilities as an Avant 500 series machine and it can run many of the Avant attachments.

A

The Finnish company said that a battery-operated machine was especially well suited for indoor areas where no or very little ventilation is possible. Its low noise level enables work in noise restricted areas or where minimum interference caused by worksite noise is a benefit, said Avant. Demolition and construction projects are highlighted by Avant as being among the potential customer base. It said that many such customers needed a machine with a

relatively short working cycle during a work day, and so the battery life was not such a big issue for them. The e5 is equipped with a 201Ah lead acid battery. It has two separate electric motors – 6kW motor for driving the machine and 2kW motor for loader boom operation and auxiliary hydraulics. Avant e5 has a 30 litres/m auxiliary hydraulics

JCB launches Hydradig JCB has launched a new compact wheeled excavator, called Hydradig, which was launched in March at an event attended by International Construction. Hydradig is described as a digging, lifting, loading and tool-carrying machine for urban construction, highway maintenance and municipal operations. The company said it listened to its customers’ needs, and ensured that Hydradig would deliver on five key areas – visibility, stability, mobility, manoeuvrability and serviceability. Operators have a 360° view from the cab, with visibility right down to each of its four wheels. The machine’s stability comes as a result of its low centre of gravity, which is said to allow stable lifting and faster travel speeds. The Hydradig can reach speeds of 40km/h when traveling between job sites, while Operators have a an all-wheel steer gives it urban usability. 360° view from Hydradig can also be serviced from the Hydradig cab ground level, as the company said it wanted to maximise the safety of operators when servicing the machine. Hydradig is equipped with three steering modes as standard. These are – two-wheel steering for security at road speeds, fourwheel and crab steering. A front axle with 8° of oscillation delivers rough terrain traction and stability, it said. An optional reverse steering button on the main console allows the operator to use all three steering modes while the cab is facing in either direction. Hydradig offers a tight turning circle of just 3,946mm on single tyres, rising to 4,511mm when equipped with a frontmounted dozer blade.

flow, which allows working with various Avant attachments, including a hydraulic hammer and various grapples. Meanwhile, the company has also revealed that production of a new Avant 200 series has started. It is described as a compact multipurpose loader that was useful in places where space was limited and a lightweight machine was necessary. It can tackle smaller scale demolition jobs, too, said Avant. The new machines are 20mm wider and 60mm longer than their predecessors, which Käkelä said improved stability, among other things. The new chassis means more storage space for tools, etc, and the fuel tank and battery are larger than before. iC
