ometimes you realise, quite late in the day, that you have a number of overlapping features in a magazine. This month, the word ‘loader’ seems to be cropping up quite regularly. This is not necessarily a bad thing; loaders are, after all, magnificent workhorses on construction sites. More than that, a lot of really exciting technological and engineering advances are being put to practical use within these machines. By that, I mean advances in cab and inside-the-cab engineering, the use of electricity, both for lifting and loading materials and for running the machine itself, and the clever body designs that are allowing the footprints of loaders to be constantly reduced, seemingly with no detrimental effect on performance. So, whether you’re reading about the super-manoeuvrability of skidsteer loaders in the compact equipment feature, the strength of the big machines in the wheeled loaders feature, or even the many and varied uses of the backhoe loader in the utilities feature, I hope you don’t feel we’ve gone overboard; the loader is just an incredibly versatile beast and no self-respecting contractor should be without one. Of course, it’s not all loaders in this issue. In fact, we’ve squeezed more features in than usual, including a first look at health and safety on construction sites, with a focus on falls and falling objects. This is a broad subject, given the diverse nature (and quality) of construction sites, not just across different geographical regions, but even operating in the same town. Accidents on jobsites, along with other aspects of construction that can and do cause harm to workers, is a theme we plan to return to in future editions, and I would greatly appreciate your feedback and thoughts about other health and safety issues we might cover. Our aim is not merely to highlight issues within the industry that need to be addressed, but also to celebrate construction firms who are putting best practices in place.

CHINA
Huge boost for OBOR President Xi Jinping of China has promised to invest a further $121.7 billion in the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative – an international infrastructure scheme that was launched by China in 2014 to revive the ancient east-west trade networks, collectively known as the Silk Road. The strategy was said to involve high-speed railways, bridges, roads, ports, industrial parks, oil pipelines and power grids that will be built across the region, from Mongolia and Laos to Uzbekistan and Malaysia. While billions of dollars have already been invested, the additional $121.7 billion pledged in new loads, aids and funding will be used to boost the existing Silk Road Fund, help developing countries along the new trade routes, and encourage financial institutions to expand overseas financing, though Jinping did not say when the extra money would be spent. The pledge for extra funding was recently announced at the Silk Road summit in Beijing, where Jinping addressed leaders from around the world, saying, “We should foster a new type of international relations featuring win-win cooperation.”

WORLD NEWS HONG KONG It has been revealed by the government in Hong Kong that global engineering and design consultant Arup suffered a cyberattack on its computer system in Hong Kong in March 2017, during the construction of the multibilliondollar Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge on which it has been contracted to work. Ransomware software encrypted a number of files on the Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong computer system for ransom from staff, with some files being locked and deleted. However, staff immediately cut off their internet connection to the server and reported the incident to the police. The company insisted that the project is still on course, adding that the private information of personnel had not been compromised in any way because it was not stored on the hacked server.

Computing and technology giant Apple has announced plans to invest US$1 billion in its operations in the US state of Nevada, with the expansion of its huge data centre in Reno. Construction work at the facility will, according to Apple, support an additional 300 jobs, with 100 additional Apple employees to work at the centre once it is completed. The Apple facility is located in the Reno Technology Center, close to the gigafactory owned by electric car manufacturer Tesla. while the tech firm will primarily focus its efforts on expanding the data centre, it is also expected to invest in a shipping and receiving warehouse. Nevada state governor Brian Sandoval said Apple’s decision to increase its local investment was “the first major economic development success in northern Nevada and helped place this region on the technology and innovation map.” Apple spokesman John Rosenstock said in a statement, “We’re excited to be increasing our contributions to the local economy with an additional $1 billion investment to expand our data centre and supporting facilities.”
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, officially opened the country’s longest bridge on Friday. The US$155 million Dhola-Sadiya Bridge spans the rivers Brahmaputra and Lohit, in upper Assam. At 3.1 km longer than the Bandra Worli Sea Link in Mumbai, the new bridge is the longest in the country above water. The Dhola-sadiya bridge is a 12.9 m wide, with 183 spans, each of 50 m, and carries a two-lane connecting road from Dhola Bazaar to Islampur Tiniali. According to reports, the crossing to Sadiya near the Lohit border in Arunachal, will take 30-minutes, reducing travel time by four hours. Construction of the bridge began in 2011 and was originally expected to be completed in December 2015. Following the inauguration of the new bridge, Modi said it would “not only save money, reduce travel time but comes as a foundation for the beginning of a new economic revolution. That is why the whole nation has its eyes on this bridge.” He also said he wanted the northeast region to be wellconnected for economic activity, saying, “For this we are laying stress on development of infrastructure.”
A joint venture partnership of Saudi Aramco and South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries has won the contract to build a US$5.2 billion shipyard in Saudi Arabia. The yard will have the capacity to produce four offshore rigs and 40 vessels (including three supertankers) a year. UAE-based energy services provider Lamprell, and Saudibased shipping firm Bahri, are also involved in the joint venture. Located in the port city of Ras al-Khair, the yard will also provide maintenance services for rigs and ships. In a statement, Saudi Aramco said, “The integrated maritime yard will be the largest in the region in terms of production capacity and scale,” adding “Major production operations are expected to commence in 2019.” It is reported that US$3.5 billion of the total investment for the shipyard will come from the Saudi government, with the rest funded by the joint venture partners. Saudi Arabia has launched a programme to diversify its industrial base after its revenues were badly hit by a 50% fall in world oil prices since 2014.

Indonesian firm Lippo Group has announced plans to build a US$21 billion industrial city near the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. It is believed the Meikarta project – which will include hotels, retail outlets and educational establishments – will primarily play host to companies from the automotive and electronics industries. The Lippo Group has already announced partnerships with Japanese car manufactuers Mitsubishi Group and Toyota, as well as the housebuilder Sanko Soflan Holdings. The first stage of the city’s development will cover around 22 million m2, and be located to the east of Jakarta, in the corridor between the capital and the West Java city of Bandung. Lippo Group’s CEO, James Riady, said in a press conference, “This corridor has become the industrial centre of Indonesia. More than one million cars, 10 million motorcycles and millions of refrigerators and air conditioners are produced there every year.”

The Zoomlion sale is on The Chinese-based firm Zoomlion has entered a conditional agreement to sell an 80% stake in its environmental sanitation business, Changsha Zoomlion Environmental Industry, and accompanying assets for a value of CNY11.6 billion (US$1.68 billion), with a view to focusing on its core construction and agricultural equipment businesses. Subject to terms and conditions, 51% of the equity interest will be transferred to the electronics and environmental protection equipment maker Infore Holding, 21.6% to Hony Investment, 4% to Guangzhou Investment, and 3.4% to the investment firm Lulian Junhe. The 80% stake sale – which implies that the entire unit is valued at CNY14.5 billion (US$2.11 billion) – comes as a major adjustment of Zoomlion’s strategy.
EX02 excavator takes centre stage at Swedish manufacturer’s Innovation Summit in London t the recent Innovation Summit hosted by Volvo Construction Equipment, industry colleagues were introduced to its latest excavator model – the EX02 excavator. According to the company, the prototype machine is the world’s first fully-electric excavator. The new EX02 prototype is almost completely silent, will produce zero emissions and is said to deliver ten times greater efficiency than equivalent conventional models. According to the product specialists on hand at the London event, the digging force of the excavator is also equivalent to those machines produced by competitor manufacturers in the same weight bracket. Volvo replaced the EX02’s combustion engine with two lithium ion batteries, with a total power output of 38 KWh. The batteries are said to store enough electric energy to operate the machine for eight hours in an intense application, such as digging compact ground. All of the excavator’s hydraulics have been replaced with electric components, including electro-mechanical linear actuators that help optimise the transmission chain. The construction machine certainly headlined at the event, but no date has yet been set for it to come on to the market. Speaking about the EX02, Thomas Bitter, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Product Portfolio, said, “What happens now is that we will go on to a reliability study. We will need some more years to work on that.”

US Sound Transit is set to begin work next month on a US$3.7 billion project in Seattle, to connect light rail services to the city’s Eastside suburbs over the I-90 bridge on Lake Washington. The project is part of the East Link rail service that will create a 22 km cross-river connection, including the first ever construction of a railway structure on a floating bridge. To overcome the obvious challenges, Sound Transit engineers designed a ‘track bridge’, with rails that rest on a series of bearings and plates, allowing them to move with changing water levels and bridge movements. Two full-scale prototypes were initially built by Sound Transit, in partnership with Parsons Brinckerhoff and Jesse Engineering of Tacoma.
Korean manufacturer Hyundai Construction Equipment (HCE) has announced its goal of becoming one of the top five ranking construction equipment manufacturers on the global market by 2023. Kong Ki-young, president and CEO of HCE, said that this would be achieved by upgrading product quality and performance to the top-tier level, along with services, and expanding its footing into new overseas markets. As part of the company’s Vision 2023, it aims to take first position in its home market this year by actively expanding its new product lines of mini excavators, which have witnessed an annual average growth rate of 13% over the past five years, and by applying its Hi-Mate 2.0 mobile control system to more of its products.

Road win for Balfour Beatty UK-based Balfour Beatty has been awarded a $625 million contract by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to reconstruct and improve a 17 km stretch of road in Dallas, Texas, US, in a joint venture with the Texasbased engineering and construction firm Fluor Corporation. The Southern Gateway contract is part of TxDOT’s Clear Lanes initiative, which is a programme that prioritises funding for congestion relief in Texas’ metropolitan areas. In the consortium, Balfour Beatty will hold a 45% share, while Fluor Corporation will hold 55%. Expected to employ approximately 700 workers at its peak, the project includes smoothing and rebuilding existing road elements, enhancing traffic operations, and improving entrance and exit ramps. Capacity on Interstate 35E (I-35E) will be increased, the interchange between I-35E and US67 will be rebuilt, and US67 will be widened between I-35E and I-20. Intended to improve road safety and relieve congestion, work is scheduled to begin in late 2017.

WORLD NEWS HIGHLIGHTS ITALY Salini Impregilo has recorded that it received US$2.45 billion of new orders in the first quarter of 2017, 50% of which was contributed by one of the company’s US subsidiaries, Lane. In terms of sector breakdown, there were two main contributors – the roads and highways sector represented 40% of the new orders while the civil and industrial sector represented 34%. Geographically, 50% of new orders came from the US, 39% from the Middle East and 11% from Italy.
US Construction equipment auctioneer and distributor Ritchie Bros has announced it has received unconditional clearance from the US Department of Justice for its acquisition of IronPlanet. The deal – which was announced in August last year – is worth US$758.5 million (€679 million). US-based IronPlanet sells machinery primarily through online platforms, with weekly online auctions. In 2015, it sold around US$787 million (€704 million) worth of equipment. Collectively, Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet sold over US$3 billion (€2.7 billion) worth of equipment in the 12 months to 30 June, 2016. CHINA The wheeled loader market in China is forecast to grow 18% over the next five years, according to a new report from the market analyst group Off-Highway Research (OHR). However, the recovery in this sector is expected to be slower than for other key types of equipment, and the market potential will remain a fraction of the high of nearly 220,000 wheeled loaders sold in 2010, according to OHR.

State government of South Australia set to give goahead to development of Central Ayre Iron Project he state government of South Australia has given its approval for the construction of the country’s largest magnetite mine. Magnetite is one of the main iron ores, a cleaner form of iron that produces lower CO2 emissions when used to produce steel. The AU$4.5 billion (US$3.3 billion) Central Ayre Iron Project, being developed by Iron Road, has been in planning for almost a decade. The mine – which will be 6.5 km long and 600 m deep – is expected to export over 20 million tonnes of magnetite each year. The deposit on the site is estimated to be over 3.7 billion tonnes, giving the project a forecast lifespan of around 25 years. Once extracted, the ore will be concentrated in a state-of-the-art processing plant, before it is exported, generating anticipated revenues of around US$2.8 billion a year. To facilitate the export of the material, Iron Road proposes the development of a new 150 km rail link, water and power services running up to 70 km, and a new port near Cape Hardy, on the east coast of the peninsula, set to include a 1400 m-long jetty and wharf.

Petrofac’s chief operating officer has been suspended following an probe by the UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) into suspected bribery, corruption and money laundering. The SFO said that the investigation was related to its ongoing investigation into activities at Unaoil – a Monaco-based company which provides industrial solutions to the energy sector in the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. Oil services company Petrofac said that a committee, comprising the chairman, independent nonexecutive directors and the chief financial officer, had been established to be responsible solely for the company’s engagement with the SFO, and to oversee the company’s response to its investigation. Petrofac added that given the scale of the investigation, the committee had decided to engage a senior external specialist to oversee the company’s management of, and response to, the investigation. This person will also review the company’s compliance processes. Ayman Asfari will continue in his role as CEO.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK: INDIA
The gains finally begin to outweigh the pain Narendra Modi’s government is working hard to stimulate the Indian economy and has managed to attract an impressive sum of foreign investment. Scott Hazelton of market analyst IHS Global Insight describes the transition of an economy that is beginning to deliver on its long-held promise. introduced between July and September 2017, may cool consumption during the second half of the fiscal year, but is unlikely to bring full-year consumer spending growth below estimates. Fixed income, however, may take longer to recover and will have to be pulled by public spending since private investment continues to suffer from weak capacity utilisation and ongoing corporate and banking sector deleveraging. On the other hand, better transmission of lower interest rates into lending rates, and a boost to sentiment following the GST’s introduction should help an investment recovery in the second half of 2017 and 2018. By reducing double taxation and logistics costs, the GST should improve business competitiveness as much as sentiment. The corporate tax for small businesses with an annual turnover up to INR500 million (US$7.75 million) is reduced to 25% from 30%. This should benefit about 96% of all Indian companies, according to Ministry of Finance estimates. The simplification of foreign investment approvals should also help secure additional foreign investment.
ndia’s economy is improving after disruptions to consumer spending and business supply chains from the November 9 demonetisation. On November 8, 2016, the government announced the demonetisation of certain banknotes to rein in the shadow economy and crimp the use of counterfeit cash. New banknotes were issued in exchange for the old banknotes, but the surprise nature of the measure caused cash shortages which disrupted the economy. At IHS Global Insight, we expect the impact to be somewhat transitory, and that India’s economy should achieve 7.0 to 7.5% growth as economic reforms continue to attract foreign investment. Indeed, foreign direct investment was up 33% in 2016 and continues to surge. Consumption deferred from the past few months appears to have resumed, with domestic passenger vehicle sales rebounding strongly in March.

Agriculture, rural spending, social schemes, and infrastructure are the focus areas of 2017/18 budget spending proposals. The government plans to spend a total of INR1.9 trillion (US$29.5 billion) on the rural and farm sector, an increase of 24% from the current year. Throughout FY 2016/17, the government was the driver of investment growth, and things are unlikely to change much in the coming year, with fixed investment to be driven primarily by government spending. The new budget boosts the government’s capital spending by around 25% from the prior year’s estimate. The infrastructure sector will receive the sum of INR3.96 trillion (US$61.3 billion), with transport allocated INR2.4 trillion (US$37.2 billion).
Foreign investment Among the main infrastructure initiatives for 2017/18 are an INR48 billion (US$747 million) rural electrification scheme (with the government on course to meet its goal of 100% rural electrification of 20,000 villages by 1 May 2018) and INR190 billion (US$2.9 billion) for rural road schemes. India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) will be phased out during 2017. The FIPB was established in the early 1990s to facilitate rebuilding India’s foreign-exchange reserves after its 1991 balance-of-payments crisis. The FIPB provides a ‘single window’ to approve foreign purchases of more than 49% of companies’ share capital in prescribed sectors. Although it has successfully established more transparent online processing of FDI applications, more than 90% of foreign investment into India in 2016 bypassed the FIPB either because it was into non-prescribed sectors or because it involved purchases of less than 49% of the relevant equity. The move will likely give further momentum to FDI into India – which IHS Markit currently projects to grown 44% in 2017 – and thereby strengthen the prime minister’s ‘Make In India’ campaign. A further reform will allow local governments to issue municipal bonds to fund projects, an important consideration given the stress on the banking system. Additional federal infrastructure

investments will target railroads ($137 billion by 2020), “Housing for All” by 2020, road network extension (23,000 km over 2016-19) and further investment in power generation capacity and Modi’s “Smart cities” initiative. The forecast for the residential sector is strong compared to some countries, but about average compared to total Indian construction and weak compared to Indian population growth. We expect forecast growth to improve as urbanization, government spending, and
an emerging middle class with an improving economy drive demand. However, even with the “Housing for All” spending, public investment priorities remain largely allocated to infrastructure and select industries that can yield quick economic gains. Office construction has suffered over recent history, despite India’s IT industry. Improving global growth will improve demand for Indian professional services, while anticipated expansion in financial and business services will drive strong growth. The past performance of growth in industrial structures has been hampered by adverse trade conditions, particular imports from China. As the Chinese economy continues to slow, exports will be only further encouraged, compounded by competition from other low cost Asian competitors such as Vietnam and Myanmar. The implication is that industrial construction will continue to be challenged. Growth will continue, but the rate of expansion will slow. While the forecast includes market reforms to boost India’s manufacturing industries and export competitiveness, this can only partially offset larger market forces. Commercial growth features the strongest performance in the private sector over the forecast, with expectations that improved consumer confidence will boost the critical retail channel, as well as tourism and Stetter batching plant M 2.5 RS Kenzingen, Germany
business travel to provide lift to lodging and food service. Infrastructure has been a top performing segment over the past five years, and it will remain the strongest over the forecast. The Modi government understands that delivering goods and services to the market, and even getting people to their jobs, is critical to continued economic development and has created the incentives and the targeted spending programs to meet the need.
Time to step up Similar logic holds for institutional spending. For India to realise its potential, the education and health care systems require significant investment, and the BJP is also addressing this need. Perhaps a little surprisngly, India’s outlook has slowed somewhat over the past year, yet under the Modi administration, government policy is very much pro-investment and infrastructure spending has been a high priority. Reforms have been slower and less wide-ranging than expected (and needed), yet the resources of India, especially its people, offer tremendous potential. Impetus from fiscal policy has been reinforced by accommodative monetary policy. The challenge for India is to capitalise on this opportunity to aspire to the strong growth trajectory of nearly a decade ago. iC

REGIONAL REPORT: LATIN AMERICA
A region under Central America has an interesting portfolio of infrastructure projects at different stages of completion. Cristián Peters, editor of Construction Latin America, reports on some major initiatives. ccording to a recent Global Economic Outlook report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Central American economies grew an average 3.8% in 2016, and are set to grow a further 3.9% this year, followed by 4.1% growth in 2018. The IMF sees Panama heading the expansion, with growth of 5.8% in 2017, followed by 6.1% growth in the next fiscal year. Nicaragua and Costa Rica appear in second and third place, respectively, followed by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, on the economic growth chart for this year and next. While the Dominican Republic is a member of the Central American Integration System, it is not included in the Central American average. The IMF forecasts economic expansion for the country of 5.3% this year, followed by 5% in 2018. The 15 largest projects currently underway in Central America command investment totalling over $74 billion, with the port sector accounting for more than 73% of that amount.
A
NICARAGUAN CANAL By far the largest project in development is the Nicaraguan Canal, a project planned to link the Caribbean Sea – and therefore the Atlantic Ocean – with the Pacific Ocean. Controversially, the canal will utilise both the San Juan River and Lake Nicaragua – Central America’s key freshwater reservoir. The predicted cost of the canal is $50 billion. Now owned by China’s HKND, the Nicaraguan Canal project is based on a 276 km-long, 230-280 m-wide wet track, with a deepwater port at either end. There will also be a pipeline, a dry Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1 and LTM 1400-7.1 cranes perform tandem lifts on Panama’s Metro Line 2
It is proposed that the San Juan River will form part of the route of the 270 km-long Nicaragua Canal
canal, an airport, two artificial lakes, two locks, a free trade zone and tourist complexes. Planners estimate the initiative could generate as many as 40,000 jobs and double Nicaragua’s per capita GDP. Of course, the project has generated as much controversy as excitement, encountering strong opposition in many quarters. Yet, at the end of March this year, the Nicaraguan Supreme Court rejected the last appeal against the canal and now the path is clear for construction to begin.
HONDURAS INTER-OCEANIC RAILWAY Another huge undertaking – and another inter-oceanic link – is the new railroad project in Honduras. Again, two deepwater ports will complete the link, this time between the Atlantic and the Pacific, with ten railway lines, totalling around 600 km between them. The $10 billion project will allow for the handling of around 24,000 containers annually. By the summer of 2016, five Honduran companies had shown interest in taking on the construction, and interest was also being shown by companies in Asia, Italy and the US. Yet, the Commission for the Promotion of Public Private Partnership (Coalianza) said the the project “could attract thousands of investors” who might wish to take advantage of the country’s geographical position, with its “privileged place in the world.”
PANAMA METRO Clearly, the inter-oceanic projects mentioned owe their credibility to the Panama Canal, and, turning to Panama, the country is completely renovating its public transport system. To this end, things are moving rapidly in Panama, following the inauguration

Costa Rica’s electric train project is considered ‘complex’ by INCOFER given its high costs
of Line 1, the first Central American metro in April 2014. Currently, the country is building Line 2, set to run between San Miguelito and New Tocumen. The system will include 16 stations and have a capacity of 16,000 passengers per hour, per direction. Construction on the railway is being carried out by, Consortium Line 2, made up of Spain’s FCC Construcciones and Constructora Norberto Odebrecht. The participation of the latter scandal-hit Brazilian firm caused some financial setbacks to the work, as Citibank withdrew its support for the project. Initially, the plan was to finalise work on Line 2 during the first quarter of 2019. However, a possible visit of Pope Francisco in January of that year could see the schedule moved forward. A further $2.6 billion will also be required to begin operations on Line 3 of the Metro, with construction set to begin in 2022. This project, planned as a monorail, will have 14 stations and could carry some 20,000 passengers per hour.
COSTA RICA ELECTRIC TRAIN One large-scale rail project that has taken a long time to get off the ground is the construction of an ambitious electric rail system in Costa Rica. After years of failed attempts, the country’s legislative assembly
passed a bill last year, allowing its publicly-owned rail company, INCOFER, to incur debt equivalent to up to 40% of its assets, to build the all-electric system. With an estimated cost of $1.6 billion, the project is likely to move forward as a public-private partnership, initially comprising a line running from Cartago in the east to Alajuela in the west. The bill, however, also authorises INCOFER to move forward with plans for a cross-country electric train system, potentially from the north Pacific coast to the Caribbean port of Moín. The primary purposes of the project are to begin to reduce the serious traffic problems in the country and bring down travel times. It is also hoped the system will ameliorate Costa Rica’s greenhouse gas emissions, 40% of which come from automobiles.
FOURTH PANAMA CANAL BRIDGE As things stand, there are six international consortiums bidding to build the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal. They are: Panama Fourth Bridge Consortium, HyundaiSacyr Consortium, Dragados Panama Branch, Astaldi-Daelim Consortium , Fourth CSCEC-CREC-GLF Bridge Consortium and CCB Consortium. The bridge, valued at around $1 billion, will have six lanes for vehicles (three in each direction) each being 3.65 m wide. There will also be two lateral sidewalks of 1.7 m for the maintenance of the bridge. Additionally, there will be space for shoulders, placement of safety barriers and structural elements of the bridge. Space will also be available for the double track of Line 3 of the Metro, bringing the total width of the bridge to 51 m.
PUERTO DE COROZAL, PANAMA Another project intrinsically linked to the Panama Canal, and one which is struggling to get past the bidding process, is the port in Corozal Oeste. The deadline set for receipt of bidding documents expired in March, but the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that no proposals forthcoming from the prequalified construction firms.

REGIONAL REPORT: LATIN AMERICA In Moín, Costa Rica, there are currently two major port initiatives: the APM Terminals container terminal (pictured), and the Atlantic Transhipment Mega Terminal
Impression of the container terminal at Moín, Costa Rica, complete with expanded quay and post-Panamax cranes
ACP said it was continuing “with its constitutional responsibility to seek an operation more and more profitable, through a strategy of commercial development that generates conditions for the benefit of the country.” When completed, this $1,35 billion Pacific port will take advantage of its location to meet the new vessels that can now make use of the Canal. Set to be built in two phases, the port will ultimately handle a capacity of 5.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent) containers.
PORT WORKS IN COSTA RICA In Moín, in the province of Limón, Costa Rica, there are currently two major port initiatives. One, currently under construction by APM Terminals, is a deepwater container terminal, set to begin operations at the beginning of next year. The complex will have an initial capacity of 1.4 million TEUs per year. By 2048, when the APM concession ends, the annual movement of cargo is expected to have reached around 2.5 million TEUs. As part of the terminal’s construction, APM dredged the access channel and turning-basin, deepening it to 16 m. The firm also constructed a new 1.5 km breakwater with a 40 hectare container yard, as well as 600 me of quay and 2 berths, equipped with 6 post-Panamax cranes. When the final phase of the project is completed, the facility will cover an area of 80 hectares, with 1500 m of quay, 5 berths and an 18 m-deep access channel. According to AMP, it will serve as a
shipping hub for the Caribbean and Central America. Also in Moín is the Mega Terminal of the Atlantic (MTA), a project that has been in the pipeline for several years. Proposed by America’s Gateway Development Corporation (Amega), it now appears to be gaining momentum and is predicted to begin operations in 2022. While the construction of two large ports in the same geographic location has been questioned, it is considered that the initiatives will not compete but will in fact be complementary, since the MTA will handle international cargo from large ships, which is to be distributed throughout the region, while APM’s container terminal in Moín will focus primarily on serving the local import and export of domestic products.
PUNTA CASTILLA PORT, HONDURAS While Costa Rica supports the development of two huge ports, Honduras has maritime ambitions of its own, namely the modernisation and extended operation of the Punta Castilla port, on its central northern Caribbean coast. The port’s operation originally began in 1984, but new plans will see the construction of a cruise ship and cabotage pier and a modern port terminal. As part of a public-private partnership operation, the port will also see significant dredging take place, enabling it to receive larger ships, while the installation of logistical and technical equipment necessary for expanded operations will take place. The total cost of the project is estimated to be around $443 million.
GUATEMALA CITY TRAIN In Guatemala, the feasibility of constructing a Metro system is currently being studied. If the project gets the green light, the system will run 20.5 km, from the northern to the southern end of the capital, Guatemala City, in just 41 minutes, including 20 station stops. The project was designed by Spanish firm IDOM Ingenieria y Consultoria,

GEOTHERMAL PROJECTS IN COSTA RICA
The capacity at El Salvador’s international airport is set to rise to 6.6 million by 2032
and, due to the high cost of the initiative – anticipated to rise to around $770 (including road connections and two intermodal bridges) – it is proposed as a public-private partnership model. If the planned steps are met, the MetroRiel system could be up and running by 2021, and have the capacity to carry up to 250,000 passengers a day.
EL SALVADOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT At present, the international airport of El Salvador has the capacity to serve some 1.6 million passengers per year. Last year, however, more than 2.9 million passengers passed through the facility, with growth of around 10% per annum forecast moving forward. With this in mind, the government has accepted the need for expansion, and investment of around $493 million is being sought to undertake the four phases of terminal construction, along with other smaller projects. This year, several tenders related to the expansion masterplan – to be concluded by 2032 – will be launched. As well as the expansion of the terminal, the initiative includes new waiting rooms, boarding bridges and parking lots. Following the initial expansion phase, the airport’s capacity will stand at 3.6 million, although it will ultimately be able to welcome around 6.6 million passengers.
Energía del Pacífico plans to build a 378 MW generation plant in the municipality of Acajutla, El Salvador
Costa Rica is investing heavily in geothermal energy and recently agreed a $554 million loan with the Japanese Government’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the development of three plants: Las Pailas II, Borinquen I and Borinquen II. The investment in Las Pailas II alone, which is currently under construction, amounts to $320 million. This facility will have a generating capacity of 55 MW and is set to begin its commercial operations in 2019, becoming the seventh geothermal plant in Costa Rica. One of the main features of the project is that its cooling tower will be made from fibreglass, as opposed to the usual concrete or wood, thus reducing project investment, lowering operating costs and benefiting the environment. The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) expects to start construction of Borinquen I (which could begin its operations in 2023) in 2018. In 2020, it is also expected to begin work on the Borinquen II plant. Both projects, like Pailas II, will have an installed capacity of 55 MW. iC
LNG PROJECTS In the municipality of Acajutla, El Salvador, Energía del Pacífico plans to build a 378 MW installed capacity generating plant, an LNG storage and regasification terminal, an LNG subsea pipeline (already re-gasified), and a transmission line of 45 km, to inject the energy to the national transmission system in the substation of Ahuachapán. The project, which calls for investment of some $800 million, is currently concluding its development stage, with some $20 million already accounted for, and, with construction underway, is set to be operational by 2020. Costa Norte, in Panama, is another major LNG undertaking. The $900 million project, which includes the construction of a combined cycle plant with 380 MW generation capacity and a 180,000 m3 LNG terminal, was tendered last year and Costa Rica’s strong volcanic activity allows it to continue strengthening its geothermal power potential

WHEELED LOADERS
Bearing the load Katherine Weir speaks with manufacturers of wheeled loaders to see what’s new, including safety innovations and engine improvements. heeled loaders are used where a flexible and reliable machine is needed for material transport. The machines must also handle the requirements of confined spaces. UK-based JCB is one of the companies with new models, the 403 – a 2.5-tonne articulated chassis wheeled loader. The manufacturer describes the compact wheeled loader as combining ‘outstanding powertrain components with a new cab design, control features and layout’. Features include a compact four-cylinder Kubota engine generating 26 kilowatt (kW) and 92 Newton metres (Nm) torque, as well as open and manual diff locks in heavy duty axles to suit hard The 844K-Series III and 844K Series-III aggregate surface and soft ground operation. handler is designed by John Deere to take The 403 has a joystick controller and on some of the toughest aggregate and armrest with parallel lift and hydraulic material moving applications quick-hitch. The machine is less than 2.2 metres tall and 1.1m wide when narrow tyres are fitted, even with a cab, enabling it to access the tightest confines on site. As well as the new loader, JCB has also recently launched a safety system recently that reduces the risk of on-site collisions between man and machine. Developed in collaboration with FCC Environment (UK), the JCB Proximity Braking System (PBS) automatically sounds an alarm in the cab and applies the vehicle’s brakes if a person enters the pre-set exclusion zone around the machine. The system also puts the vehicle

into neutral and applies the parking brake. The pedestrian is also warned of the danger of a moving machine through a vibrating transponder attached to their safety helmet. PBS is an option on the JCB’s flagship wheeled loader, JCB 457. For China-based SDLG, ConExpo (Las Vegas, Nevada) was the stage for the unveiling of its new compact wheel loader – the SDLG L918F. The company’s decision to expand its product range comes on the heels of its successful launch into North America. This is the fifth wheeled loader offering in the region. The L918F has a 1.0 yd3 bucket capacity mounted to a skid steer style coupler, which SDLG says places it in the compact loader category but with the versatility of skid steer style attachments. The unit also has an optional 1.3 yd3 bucket with wheel loader ISO coupler. The company claims that the L918F will compete with large skid loaders because of the similar bucket capacity but with the benefit of ‘increased manoeuvrability and operator comfort’.

Al Quinn, director of SDLG North America, says that customer demand is the driving force behind introducing the new machine, with several companies asking SDLG dealers for a compact, value loader alternative for many current skid steer loader applications.
Smooth running Earlier this year, Volvo released its L260H wheeled loader designed for heavy-duty applications. At 34 tonnes, the model is purpose-built to load on-highway trucks in two even passes, the company says. Compared to previous models, Volvo says that the L260H has 5% more horsepower and torque, a 15% increase in payload and has larger bucket sizes – as well as a 10% fuel efficiency improvement. It comes with Volvo Co-Pilot with Load Assist and an ‘intelligently redesigned lifting-arm system and frame’, resulting in faster cycle times, increased on-site productivity and maximum operator comfort, the company says. Volvo has also redesigned its largest wheeled loader, L350H, again benefiting from a 10% fuel efficiency. New improvements showcased at ConExpo include a new powertrain, hydraulics, an updated operator environment and a Tier 4 Final D16J engine. Touted as the ideal partner for quarry production, the L350H comes with a 7.3 m3 rock bucket. Back in December of last year, John Deere added the 844K Series-III and 844K Series-III aggregate handler to its wheeled loader line-up. Described as workhorse machines, the 844K-III is designed to take on the toughest aggregate and material moving applications in the world. John Chesterman, product marketing manager, production class four-wheel drive loaders at John Deere Construction and Forestry, says, “We worked closely with our customers to

design these productive machines to be even more rugged and reliable. “The Aggregate Handler configuration of the 844K-III can load out 24 short tonnes of non-heaping, lower density processed matter in just two passes into on-road dump trucks. Heavier heaping materials achieving 12-plus tonnes is not a problem.” Other news from John Deere is a 20,000-hour warranty – the equivalent of eight years – on its 944K hybrid wheeled loader.
Power and speed Liebherr-Werk Bischofshofen currently provides 15 different wheeled loader models in four different product groups: compact loaders, Stereoloaders, medium-sized wheeled loaders and large XPower generation wheeled loaders. The company recently celebrated the delivery of its 50,000th wheeled loader, a L566 XPower, to longstanding customer Geiuger Unternehmesgruppe. New to the product line is the L514 and L518 Stereoloaders, the new Stage V/Tier 4f emission standards compliant models. Described by Liebherr as agile and versatile, the loaders are available as ‘Speeders’ with a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour and will be available for order and delivery in the second half of 2017. Other features include the new Z-unit bar linkage and a spacious driver’s cab. The L514 is said to be suited to municipal services, road building and a wide range of other applications. The larger L518 is a new model in the loader range, designed for industrial use.

WHEELED LOADERS A new generation of the WL70 from Wacker Neuson was released recently with new engines and additional options
South-Africa-based Bell Equipment introduced its new E-series ADT range globally at the end of 2016. The E-series started with the smaller B25E and B30E models four years ago, and has now been completed with the addition of five new models: B35E, B40E, B45E, B50E and the 4x4 crossover B60E. Gary Bell, chief executive of the Bell Equipment Group, says, “Our products need to perform and what we see with our E-series trucks are world class machines capable of taking on any of the competitors, anywhere in the world.” The company says that these new models have achieved its main design goal, to improve upon the lowest cost per tonne industry benchmark set by its D-series counterparts.
It’s all in the arms Wacker Neuson, based in Germany, has 12 articulated wheel loaders with bucket capacities from 0.2 to 1.1 cubic metres and an operating weight of between 2 to 7 tonnes. In May, the manufacturer released a new generation of WL60 and WL70 machines – the two largest wheeled loader models – with new engines and additional options. Gehl, part of Manitou, has introduced the T650 and T750 (pictured) telescopic articulated loaders for the North American market
Contractor Jan De Nul using a Hitachi ZW310-6 for general material handling tasks at a soil treatment centre in Liège, Belgium
The two new loaders, with bucket volumes of 1.0 to 1.1 cubic metres respectively, are said to be able to manage difficult applications thanks to their sturdy and powerful load arm design. Also new from Wacker Neuson is the WL28, released late last year. Its compact dimensions, low operating weight and headroom of less than 2.3 m makes entering buildings no problem as well as being able to be transported on a conventional car trailer. The company says that despite its size, the wheeled loader is a ‘real powerhouse’. It has a tipping load of 1.9 tonnes, and to promote better visibility, the height of the front carriage was kept deliberately low so the operator has a good view of the attachments at all times. The WL20e, introduced in 2015, was the first wheeled loader with an electric drive. With further development, this model is now available with an Absorbent Glass Matt (AGM) battery giving easy handling and low maintenance. Benefits include less sensitivity to temperature, an ‘on-board’ battery charger and customers who already own the WL20e can convert to the AGM technology. Gehl, part of Manitou, has introduced the T650 and T750 telescopic articulated loaders for the North American market. The manufacturer says that the loaders offer some of the highest breakout forces in their respective classes, as well as coming with a telescopic lift arm with Z-bar linkage, float detent and cushioned cylinders. The models also come with tire options for ground engaging performance and a selflevelling bucket. Mustang, also part of the Manitou Group, brings the 608T and 708T telescopic articulated loaders for the market in North America. The models have many of the same features of the T650 and T750 from Gehl including a multi-function joystick and auxiliary hydraulic options for owner/operator preference.
Increased efficiency Manufacturer Caterpillar has been very busy with its wheeled loaders portfolio across its small, medium and large ranges. Upgrades have been made to the M Series small wheeled loaders (926M, 930M and 938M) as well as the

WHEELED LOADERS K Series (924K, 930K, 938K) including a new secondary display module option for all models within the product line to improve operator interface and navigation. In March, Caterpillar released its 986K large wheeled loader for the North America, Europe, Japan and South Korea markets promising significant efficiency increases for low-cost per tonne operation. The loader comes with STIC steer and Cat Production Measurement, which give tip-off capability to the operator that there is sufficient weight in the bucket before leaving the pile, increasing machine productivity. Limited growth New report predicts rise in Chinese wheeled loader sales hile the slowdown in the growth of the Chinese economy has been well documented in recent times, it will still be a significant target for wheeled loader manufacturers. The market within the Asian giant is forecast to growby as much as 18% over the next five years, according to Off-Highway Research (OHR). However, the recovery in this sector will be slower than for other key types of equipment, and the market potential will remain a fraction of the high of nearly 220,000 wheeled loaders sold in 2010. Wheeled loaders have historically been the mainstay of the Chinese construction equipment sector. According to OHR, the active population of machines in the country is more than 1.3 million units. The availability of new machines is one reason why growth prospects are low. “This product has by far the largest population of any machine type, there are a considerable number of second-hand machines, while the average utilisation rate has only improved slightly,” says the report.
W
application specialist for Caterpillar Europe, says, “Although the 950GC medium wheeled loader was introduced in the Lesser Regulated Countries a few years ago, it is now available for sale in North America and Europe with a few upgrades. It is now configured to meet Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emissions regulations, and delivers solid performance and ease of use.” As well as the introduction of the 950GC to the Higher Regulated Countries, Caterpillar has made improvements and enhancements to its L Series (950L, 962L and 980L) across several regions as well as upgrades and updates to its M wheeled loaders in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. “For the future, we will be looking to make our machines more efficient, reduce fuel consumption and improve operator efficiencies. We believe that small changes in the design of wheeled loaders can make huge differences, so we are focused on making our products as easy to operate as possible,” says Brasseur. iC

COMPACT EQUIPMENT
The smaller the Minimal footprints, reduced width height and weight, enhanced fuel efficiency. How much further can compact machines go? Mike Hayes reports. ven the largest construction undertakings will utilise compact equipment – machines traditionally ranging from 4 to 10 tonnes in weight, but now often considerably lighter. While the new compacts may have lost weight, they remain remarkably stable and powerful, as advanced technology and engineering drives improvements across the board. Case Construction Equipment has six new models of mini excavators in its C Series, ranging in weight from 1.7 to 6 tonnes. The firm says more models will also be added to the range in 2018. The C Series excavators benefit from proven engines and hydraulic systems, and five of the six comply with Tier 4 Final emission standards. The CX26C, for example, weighs just 2,504 kg, but delivers a dig depth of 2.4 m, and, with zero tail swing, is well suited to working in urban areas. Three of the main advances Case has made to the machine are fuel efficiency (via its 18.5 kW engine), comfort and visibility (spacious cab with optional heating), and serviceability (fills, filter, gauges and grease points are all accessible from the ground).
E
With a weight of less than 1.65 tonnes, Bobcat’s E17Z is towable on trailers for 2200 kg of total weight
Zero tail swing Bobcat has also launched a new compact excavator with zero tail swing, the E17Z. This 1.7 tonne machne utilises Bobcat’s Zero House Swing (ZHS) design, in which the front upper structure is also fully protected by ensuring the front corners are kept within the swing circle when the tracks are in the fully expanded
position. As a result, the ZHS functionality on the E17Z provides the peace-of-mind of 320° of free rotation when working close to walls and other obstructions. Bobcat has also advanced the machine’s digging force and paid particular attention to smooth workgroup functions, as well as fast hydraulic performance in terms of low cycle times. And with a transport weight of less than 1.65 tonne, the E17Z is towable on trailers for 2,200 kg of total weight. With compact wheeled loaders, customers are looking for machines that are productive, versatile and durable. John Deere has introduced two new models to the sector – the John Deere says stereo steering on its 244K-II makes turns 20% tighter than comparable loaders

develops little heat when charging and during operation, which results in an increased electric power output. Another advantage of Wacker Neuson’s new wheeled loader generation is the ‘onboard’ battery charger with 230 V, which has been integrated into the machine. With this, the battery can be charged easily with a cable at any plug receptacle, making operating the WL20e easier in everyday construction work. In terms of the performance parameters of the WL20e, Wacker Neuson says they correspond closely to those of the dieselpowered model, even exceeding them in some aspects, including the tipping load, which reaches up to 1,509 kg, due to the weight of the battery. The new C series minis from Case have safety features including an emergency stop switch and a rear-view camera
244K-II and the 324K. Both machines include new features and options that can be utilised by the construction industry. The firm says its 244K-II loader has increased power through its 52kW Tier 4 Final emission-certified engine, giving it greater breakout force with reach and stability. Stereo steering also delivers a smooth turning radius that John Deere says is up to 20% tighter than comparable loaders, as well as a travel speed of up to 27 kph. The firm’s 324K loader now incorporates a high-lift option, making it adept at dumping into feed mixers or quickly stacking lighter loads. Both machines are compatible with a variety of John Deere’s Worksite Pro attachments, and both have optional higher flow hydraulics to run heavy-duty attachments, such as cold planers. Another option is a push-button-activated skid-steer-style coupler, allowing operators to connect to and release attachments without leaving the seat.
Power of electric In 2015, Wacker Neuson presented the WL20e – the first wheeled loader with an electric drive. The battery-powered wheeled loader with a bucket capacity of 0.2 m3 has been further developed and is now available with a high-quality absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery, which is characterised by improved handling and lower maintenance. With an AGM battery, the electrolyte is bound in a fleece made of glass fibres, making it a leak-proof system. Additionally, it is less sensitive to temperature and

Making a mark in the US Volvo skid-steer loaders aid road marking projects in California ayco Specialties, a family-owned road marking company, has established itself as a key-player in the industry, with some 40 years’ experience. With roads busy during the day, 95% of local paving and associated resurfacing work for the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) occurs at night to avoid causing traffic congestion. Any delay in production is subject to severe penalties that could throw a project offroad. “On most major CalTrans jobs, in the first minute you are late, they can fine you up to US$10,000 and US$1,000 for every minute after that,” says Llewellyn. “Being just five minutes late can mean giving up the entire job.” Responding to the pressure to perform quickly, Payco looked for a skid-steer loader with strong hydraulic flow and good visibility from the cab. The Volvo MC115C loader was selected for the job of removing the reflective pavement markers from the asphalt and dropping them into the 1.5 m bucket. The MC115C also comes standard with two forward and two rear lights, enabling operators to see clearly at night. Additionally, the single arm design of the skid steer loader is built with high tensile steel to withstand the shock-load of repeatedly popping reflective markers from the pavement. Over the past three years, the machine has racked up almost 2,000 hours. Powered by a 55 kW (74 hp) Tier 4 Final Volvo engine, the MC115C has a hydraulic flow rate of 125 lpm (33 gpm) and a 1,179 kg (2,600 lb) lifting capacity, making the machine suitable for multiple applications. Digging holes for roadside signs, for example, is completed with the use of an auger attachment. The machine is also fitted with forks to load 907 kg (2,000 lb) pallets of thermoplastic powder, a job previously performed by a compact wheel loader.

Tobroco-Giant’s SK 251D weighs just 810 kg and has a maximum power output of 17.5 kW
The loader can operate under full load for up to five hours, starting with a full charge, and the battery’s charge status is constantly visible on the operator’s display. With a height of 2.25 m and a width of just over 1 m, low and narrow passages, and transport on a trailer are straightforward, while a fold-down canopy and even a hydraulically lowerable canopy are available as options. Tobroco-Giant’s skid-steer loaders are small manoeuvrable ride-on machines, and the Dutch firm currently offers three models, with power outputs ranging from 15 kW to 18.6 kW. A fourth skid-steer model, the electric/hydraulic E-Skid, will be coming on to the market from next year. As with previous models, the Giant loaders incorporate components from brands such as Kubota, Parker, Honda and Hydac. The loaders, with the smallest weighing just 750 kg, are driven by four hydraulic wheel motors which provide a high thrust and pulling force. The current largest model in Giant’s skid-steer range is the SK 251D, weighing 810 kg, and with a maximum power output of 17.5 kW and a tipping load of 293 kg.
Ride-on time This year, Ditch Witch unveiled new mini skid-steer loaders and a stand-on trencher. The US firm revealed four construction-grade mini skid-steer models, including the compact SK600. Equipped with an 18.5 kW diesel engine, the machine delivers 272 kg-rated operating capacity and a 193 cm hinge-pin height. Chris Thompson, Ditch Witch product manager, compact equipment, said, “The SK600 is designed specifically for projects that require operators to work in tight environments and hardto-reach places.” The SK600 incorporates the Ditch Witch construction-grade design for enhanced durability and longevity, and Ditch Witch says operators will save time and money keeping the machine running smoothly. An enhanced operator platform improves the machine’s

platform stability and ground clearance compared with similar models on the market. An auxiliary-control foot pedal allows operators to maintain hydraulic flow to the attachment, while optimised machine hydraulics deliver a smooth ride, for additional operator comfort. In demolition applications, compact machinery is often of vital importance, and Brokk’s latest remote-control demolition machine, the B500, promises power and durability within a compact body. Brokk says the B400 has 40% more demolition power than the Brokk 400, boasting the Brokk SmartPower electrical system, which maximises the power output of the machine at any given time, based on both environmental and operating factors. Martin Krupicka, Brokk Group CEO, said the new model is a “remarkable demonstration of how far we have come in getting the most demolition power possible out of a Brokk machine without adding to its size, largely thanks to our new Brokk SmartPower system.” Using an Atlas Copco SB 702 hydraulic breaker, the machine is capable of delivering 1,472 joules with each blow. The reach of the B500 has also been extended, to 7.4 m vertically and 7 m horizontally. Yet, the machine weighs just 5,200 kg, only fractionally heavier than the B400, with the same width and the capacity to use all the tools and attachments of its predecessor. The Vermeer CTX100 compact utility loader features vertical lift boom arms, keeping the load closer to the machine and offering a higher lift capacity than a similarly-sized radial lift machine. With this model, Vermeer also increased the hinge pin height to 227.33 cm, increasing the efficiency of loading materials. The CTX100 has a tipping capacity of 2,958 1,334 kg and a rated operating capacity of 467 kg. It has a 29.8 kw Kohler KDI Tier 4 Final diesel engine and a universal mounting plate to power a variety of attachments. It also comes standard with dual auxiliary hydraulic controls, which range from 30.6 L/min, up to 58.7 L/min, depending on the demands on the attachment. Like other models in the Vermeer compact utility loader lineup, the CTX100 features a chariot-style, spring-cushioned ride-on platform, and the operator station features a single, pilot-operated joystick for smoother operation. An operator presence system is integrated into the platform, in which the ground drive and attachment motion is suspended if the operator steps off the machine. iC

CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION The Vacuworx SS2 lifting attachment, operating in harness with a Bobcat skid-steer loader
With so much concrete involved in construction, small changes can add up to big differences. Thomas Allen looks at how companies are improving margins
Concrete, concrete, everywhere ubbed by the European Cement Association, Cembureau, as the most widely used material in the world – after air and water – concrete cannot be escaped in the construction industry. It is everywhere. So when it comes to choosing the right equipment to mix, pump or drill concrete, flexibility and productivity reign supreme because small time savings and little ergonomic tweaks can be magnified by economies of scale. One innovation that has been making significant savings on time is the SS 2 Skid Steer Vacuum Lifting System created by the US company Vacuworx. One of these machines was recently purchased by the Kansas-based concrete contractor Bedrock Concrete in order to comply with noise and vibration restrictions during a drilled pier installation project at the Overland Park Xchange building in Kansas, US. Designed to operate in conjunction with a skid-steer’s hydraulic system, the SS 2 was used by Bedrock on a Bobcat S650 skid steer loader. Made of aluminium, it weighs in at just over 44 kg without the universal mounting plate, making it a lightweight and versatile attachment that can also be used with a variety of miniexcavators or small cranes that employ the clevis hook connection.
D
With the ability to pick up any flat, non-porous material, including marble, granite, metal, steel and iron, the SS 2 has a lifting capacity of 1.25 tonnes. Requiring a minimum of 45.5 litres per minute to provide a pressure of up to 3,000 pounds per square inch, the hydraulicallydriven vacuum pump is fitted with quickconnection hydraulic hoses so that it can operate using the auxiliary hydraulics of the host machine. A Vacuworx Tough Seal pad seal is used on the vacuum pad to cover the material to be lifted, providing a powerful positive seal when the system is pulling a vacuum between the integrated 60x60cm vacuum pad and the object. The pump maintains a constant vacuum in the pressure reservoir and the vacuum seal holds until the operator activates the release, even in the event of a power failure. “The SS 2 was more efficient than a jackhammer or other methods we’ve used in the past,” said Beau Hahn, co-owner of Bedrock. tear on our Bobcat and employees. Instead of having two or three guys working, it was basically just one.” The concrete contractor apparently pulled 46 squares of sawcut concrete – each weighing about half a tonne – in less than an hour. In addition, Bedrock said this quick and simple solution helped to create a safer and cleaner work environment, with a reduced potential for disruption or damage to the subgrade.
Total Controls Controls Group collaborates to develop solution for testing concrete fter working together with universities and laboratories worldwide to carry out research, producer of testing equipment Controls Group has released an all-in-one solution for testing concrete and steel with precision. The new Automax UTM controls console allows different test procedures to be carried out on various types of construction materials, to measure compression, flexure and indirect tensile strength. It is capable of determining the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio of concrete and cement, and the tensile strength of steel rebars. The PC-controlled machine is supplied along with different software modules specifically designed to meet the main international standards for the testing procedures it carries out. A test cycle – with closed loop digital feedback – can be automatically performed by simply pressing the start button. Test graphs and other data are then displayed in real time during the test. Customised test certificates can be directly printed or archived at the end of each test, making it easy to prove that the correct procedure was carried out in accordance with the relevant standards. The console has a broad set of capabilities ties due to the large number of channels that can be connectedd to. It has four testing frames and can collect data from up to tenn displacement, strain and elongation sensors. At a relatively low cost, and old tension, compression or combined tension and compression testing unit can be updated with the new console by replacing the existing hydraulics and electronics, offering an affordable way to keep up with the strict and evolving requirements of international standards.

Another quick and simple solution is provided by TEI Rock Drills. The US-based construction equipment supplier has introduced the HEM Excavator Attachment, which has the ability to swivel 360˚. With such a range of motion, difficult positions can be reached, in both high and low environments. Virtually all buildings have foundations made mostly of concrete, and those foundations are constructed on piles filled with concrete.
Hollow bar micro-piles While these piles might be driven into the ground, it is said to be increasingly the case that they are drilled and then filled with concrete and steel. Although the foundations for large buildings require large piles, TEI’s HEM excavator drill is designed to create micropiles for light commercial and residential construction. Another application is drilling anchors to support retaining walls for things such as roads and excavation sites. The HEM excavator drill specialises in installing hollow-bar micropiles and anchors, whereby a hollow bar is used as a drilling rod, with a bit threaded onto the end, and then grout is pumped through the bar as the drill turns and hammers the bar into the rock or soil. pumped at high pressure during installation, Since grout is being pum the integrity of the ssurrounding soil is said to be improved. When Whe it comes to pumping concrete, USbased Reed has introduced a highb performance, 180 cc hydraulic pump. The B70HPS model uses a 130 hp Cummins Diesel engine – which is available on both Tier 3 and Tier 4/Euro a Final – and is said to reduce wear on the F motor and hydraulic system. m By running the engine at just 1750 rpm, Reed said it strikes an ideal point r on o the torque curve for that motor. This provides better performance and a longer p machine life than if a smaller capacity m and a less expensive hydraulic pumps were

used, which would need to be spun much faster to achieve the maximum rated output and pressure. Intended primarily for flatwork and high-rise pumping, Reed’s 45 m per hour pumps are designed for contractors who want to pump big rock concrete and spray shotcrete. The 150 mm-diameter material cylinder is better suited for shotcrete applications than the larger seven inch material cylinder offered on Reed’s 70 and 90 m per hour rated pumps. Due to the compact size of the B70HPS pump, it takes up a relatively small footprint on the jobsite and it can be manoeuvred on mid- to high-rise projects, as well as being towed easily. On the subject of portability, Minnich Manufacturing revealed its new backpack concrete vibrators at ConExpo 2017 in Las Vegas, US, which are due to be available this summer. The new and improved gas-powered range includes a 50 cc model, as well as an updated 35 cc unit. They are designed to maximise operator comfort, and give additional mobility and productivity during concrete consolidation.

New features include an ergonomically designed, fully adjustable harness that reduces strain and fatigue, and a throttle assembly with combined quick disconnect so that the core and casing can be changed out in seconds. Also, the throttle assembly is part of the core casing so that operators are able use both hands to lower and lift the vibrator into and out of concrete, and the throttle lock lets the operator move their hands up and down the core and casing while lifting and lowering. The vibrators are equipped with a Honda mini four-stroke engine for reliable performance, and the 35 cc version has an allposition diaphragm carburettor, which allows the equipment to be operated in any position without stalling. The flexibility of these backpack vibrators is enhanced by the fact that all the cores, casings and vibrator heads are interchangeable among all Minnich electric- and gas- powered motors.

Dust collection Manufacturer enhances health and safety with new system innich showcased its new dust collection system for concrete dowel-pin drills at World of Concrete 2017 in Las Vegas, US. The company said it meets the requirements for dowel pin drills found in Table 1 of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) final respirable crystalline silica standard when used with the appropriate filters – which are supplied with the system. The pneumatic dust collector features a Venturi-style suction and manual or automatic purge control, which removes dust from the air as the operator drills. Not only can the canister-style unit be retrofitted to any Minnich on-grade, on-slab, machine-mounted or utility drill model, but it can also be adapted to fit other dowel pin drill makes and models. Each canister can accommodate up to two drills and offers a 60m2 filter area. The system also comes with drill rod guide collection boots, a 22-litre pail-type hopper and up to 20 feet of vacuum hose per drill. Rob Minnich, vice president of marketing, said “The final silica rule is a complex challenge for contractors. We’re here to help. The Minnich dust collection solution can help simplify the compliance process.”

Chicago Pneumatic has added to its range of concrete vibrators. The company’s Vektor 12K electronic vibrators are said to be quiet, safe and efficient tools. Providing a centrifugal force of 4,600 N, these vibrators are suitable for use across a wide variety of high- to low- slump concrete applications. For ease of operation, all Vektor models feature a high-frequency motor-in-head vibrator and a built-in frequency converter (60to-220 Hz or 50-to-220 Hz), which means that they can be plugged directly into a standard 115 V or 230 V wall socket. With a radius of action that is 12 times the unit’s diameter and a vibration frequency of 12,000 VPM, the Vektor series of vibrators require fewer insertions, making for higher productivity and faster job completion. A silent electric induction motor that is built into the vibrator’s head drives a one-piece copper helical rotor and bolted eccentrics. The vital components are housed within a hardened steel tube. The design of the head provides less resistance when the machine is starting up and when it is operating at full capacity. Therefore, power consumption is reduced and it can be run on a smaller generator. The lifespan of the vibrator head is extended by the fact that high-quality, lowmaintenance, oil-lubricated roller bearings are used, as opposed to conventional greased-for-life bearings. iC

UTILITIES The AMC 6 lifting attachment from Vacuworx, operating on a truck mounted articulating crane
Utilities operations have benefited in recent years from the development of innovative techniques and equipment, as Mike Hayes reports.
Call in the specialists In just 4.5 hours, Volvo’s PL4809E pipelayer can be converted to a standard excavator
lthough it is still common practice for contractors to make use of excavators for digging trenches, there is little doubt that the use of specialist equipment for utilities installation can make the job quicker and less labour-intensive and, importantly, substantially reduce disruption. With innovations in specialist equipment, such as horizontal directional drills (HDD) and pipe fusion machines, gains can clearly be made on jobsites that include a significant element of specialist work.
A
Among the biggest developments in the sector was the emergence of trenchless systems in the 1980s, which meant pipes and other underground services could be installed without the disruption of digging a trench. This remains an area of technological development, with plenty of new products coming onto the market. Vacuworx has a number of solutions for utilities work, including its new mid-range AMC series of lifting attachments. The AMC 6 and AMC 4 models operate in conjunction with compact to mid-sized excavators, as well as with truck mounted articulating cranes, using the hydraulic power from the host machine without a significant reduction in the equipment’s overall lifting capacity. Suited for steel, poly or concrete pipe, as well as trench plate and concrete slabs, the AMC series is designed to undertake work in congested street applications or other tight areas. In these situations, the host equipment must be able to manoeuvre in relatively small or busy spaces, which means the attachment must be as small as possible without sacrificing power and reliability. With mounting options for both traditional excavators and truck cranes, the AMC series is able to load and unload materials while maintaining a compact overall footprint. In addition, Vacuworx says the lightweight, self-contained design is hydraulically powered to eliminate fuel costs, emissions and noise. The AMC 6 has a lift capacity of 6 tonnes and comes standard

Versatility For heavy pipelaying work, Volvo CE offers its new PL4809E rotating pipelayer. Volvo says the machine’s excavator-based design, advanced load management system and CareTrack telematics significantly enhance its performance capabilities. The PL4809E, with its Volvo D13J Tier 4 Final engine, has a maximum tipping capacity of 110 tonnes, and is able to work across rugged terrain and on slopes of up to 35 degrees, which is beneficial for lowering-in applications. The machine’s 360-degree swing means operators can rotate the superstructure around to lift and place large, heavy pipes. The PL4809E can also be converted into a standard excavator (in as little as 4.5 hours, according to Volvo), by switching the pipelayer boom for an excavator alternative, which is an optional extra. Volvo says hydraulics are matched for both pipelaying and digging operations, so there is no loss of power in either configuration. At this year’s ConExpo event in Las Vegas, Liebherr premiered its new RL 56 pipelayer – the first of its generation 6 models. The RL 56 boasts increased lifting capacity (72 tonnes) and a hydrostatic travel drive to give it enhanced performance. Liebherr says the new model has been designed with a focus on ensuring long component service lives, low service costs and low fuel consumption. In terms of fuel consumption, the RL 56 is driven by a Tier 4 Final Liebherr diesel engine with an output of 210 kW. The firm says the combustion process has been optimised to minimise internal particulates, so no diesel particulate filter (dpf ) is required. With the engine operating at 1800 rpm, fuel consumption is reduced, while load-sensing hydraulics supply only the oil required, this protecting the components. Liebherr says, depending on the nature of the work, and
provided regular checks are performed, hydraulic fluid change intervals can be as long as 8,000 hours of operation. Operator safety is another high priority with the RL 56, and cabs have integrated rollover protection as standard. The safety brake also opens and closes automatically, preventing the machine from rolling on steep inclines.

Small, versatile machines can often make all the difference to utilities contractors, and JCB certainly has one in the shape of its 3CX Compact backhoe loader. The loader – which is just 1.95 m high and 2.74 m high – has an extremely tight turning circle, as well as switchable steering modes, which allow it to work in confined areas with minimum disruption. The machine’s driving modes can be switched between 2WS and 4WS, allowing operators to travel safely on highways, then change steering mode for on-site manoeuvrability. Powered by a high torque 55 kW JCB by Kohler engine, requiring no after-treatment, the 3CX boasts low servicing costs and minimal downtime. Recently, JCB has enhanced the 3CX, by making a high-flow auxiliary hydraulic circuit available, which delivers up to 120 litres per minute of flow to power a range of loader-mounted attachments. In addition, the firm is promising additional features for the machine, including multi-function front loader control, a powerslide option, allowing repositioning without ground damage, a skid steer attachment hitch which will increase work tool availability and additional cab storage. Within the utilities sector, JCB also has its much vaunted Hydradig wheeled excavator, which it released last summer. This was the first machine of its type to move the engine, tanks and ancillaries to the chassis, enhancing it in many important areas, such as visibility, stability, manoeuvrability and mobility. There’s no denying the small excavator is still a vital piece of equipment for utilities work. Kobelco’s smallest excavator, the SK08 has a compact design that makes it ideal for operating inside buildings or where space is severely restricted. The machine has an operating weight of 1,035 kg, with a slim upper structure that allows it to enter passages with a width of just 700 mm. The SK08 is also equipped with a crawler extension/retraction

The nature of the beast Michels experiences the wildlife on a tricky pipelaying job tility work is never easy, but sometimes the obstacles between the team and getting the job done can seem almost insurmountable. Michels is one of the leading horizontal directional drilling manufacturer in North America, and can make the proud boast that it has completed HDD work in all 50 US states, as well as along the US-Canada and US-Mexico borders. In Canada, Michels was commissioned to construct a 36.2 km, 76 cm pipeline for the Thornbury section of the Liege Lateral Loop 2 Project (LLLT), a huge natural gas pipeline expansion in the Mariana Lake area of northern Alberta. Horizontal directional drilling was used to complete major crossings of Highway 63 and the House River. The LLLT project was entirely located on crown-owned land that is a nationally recognised environmentally significant area. The pipeline route traversed large natural areas, intact wetland areas and important wildlife habitats, including habitat for woodland caribou. Additionally, the route crossed a Key Wildlife and Biodiversity Zone (KWBZ) associated with the House River, which required work to adhere to a strict timeline. The Michels team used minimal disturbance techniques, including severely restricted grading, to reduce impacts on soils and vegetation substructure. To allow safe construction through the Canadian muskeg – or bogland – the ground had to be frost-packed. Wooden access mats were also used to accommodate unusually warm weather.

mechanism as standard and the crawlers can be further retracted to just 680mm to avoid obstacles underneath the machine. The machine’s tail swing radius is 725mm and it has a maximum tail overhang of 305mm, and its boom swing, which provides a digging width of up to 310mm outside the left crawler (crawler retracted) when the boom is swung 85 degrees to the right, aenables the smooth digging of side ditches close to walls. The SK08’s 7.7 kW high output engine delivers 10 kN of digging force and its working range includes 2,830 mm digging reach and 1,460 mm digging depth.
Optimum stability Doosan says the stability of its new DX17Z is best-in-class, compared with all other ZTS machines on the market. To back up this bold claim, Doosan describes the machine’s retractable undercarriage – when fully retracted it allows the excavator to go through narrow spaces; and when fully expanded, it provides optimum stability for the excavator − especially when working over the side. Expansion and retraction are simple and easy via an electric switch on the control panel. The DX17Z features an optional long dozer blade; as well as helping to perform dustpan operations, the optional long dozer blade also significantly improves front stability, enabling the operator to make full use of the breakout forces the DX17Z can deliver. Optimum stability for the machine is achieved by fully expanding the retractable undercarriage and using the long dozer blade. With the firm foundation of optimised stability and lifting capacity, the DX17Z offers versatility in operating a wide range of attachments. The excavator can be supplied with an optional certified ‘object handling device’, which consists of a boom load holding valve, arm load holding valve, hooking device and overload warning device. US-based Ditch Witch recently introduced the MT16 microtrencher, designed to cut narrow trenches 125 to 500 mm wide and up to 4064 mm deep. In addition, an infinitely variable hydraulic plunge feature is said to eliminate manual adjustment of the microtrencher by providing variable depth control from zero to 4064 mm. For a tighter-cut radius, the unit’s frame has the ability to swing up to six degrees in each direction, enabling operators to efficiently cut on a street corner or around a cul-de-sac. iC

HEALTH AND SAFETY Genie has been raising awareness of safety in the aerial access industry
Construction workers are at high risk of harm. Thomas Allen looks at the various approaches taken to improving health and safety on the jobsite
Risky business h construction industry he d is one off the h most dangerous industries to work in, alongside agriculture and waste, according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO). This is a challenge that needs to be faced but it is a difficult one, owing to the fact that the industry is so broad and diverse. There exist significant differences in terms of the maturity of safety culture across different regions and countries. Dominique Vansteenkiste, high-risk safety leader at Honeywell Industrial Safety in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), said “Larger companies, particularly in countries with advanced health and safety legislation, such as the UK and northern Europe, have now achieved relatively high levels of safety. “By contrast, small and medium enterprises, which still account for up to 95% of construction businesses in the EU, often lag behind, probably due to lack of resources and fewer dedicated safety professionals.” However, there is hope. Companies are making an effort to improve jobsite health and safety on a number of fronts. Commenting on education, Vansteenkiste added, “With safety training now being integrated in vocational education, the new

generation off workers k entering the h industry d is demanding d d higher standards from their employers and the protection they are given.”
Understanding the risks In relation to this, Genie – a Terex brand – has been raising awareness of safety in the aerial access industry. The company released its Upcoming Changes to ANSI A92 & CSA B354 Standards presentation in support of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction week in May 2017. The presentation explained how and why the ANSI A92 standards in the US and CSA B354 standards in Canada were changing. Scott Owyen, Genie training manager, Terex aerial work platforms, said, “With the changes to the ANSI and CSA standards, there is a need for education, especially in the aerial market, about the implications of the new standards, as well as how they will work with current industry regulations.” According to the OSHA, fatalities from falls from elevation continued to be a leading cause of death for construction MSA Safety’s new V-Form fall protection harness

workers, accounting for 350 of the 937 construction fatalities recorded in the US in 2015 by the Bureau of Labour Statistics. These figures are in line with statistics published by Health & Safety Executive that showed falls from height killed 97 construction workers over the past five years in Great Britain alone, representing 45% of all fatal injuries in the region. These fatalities are primarily caused by fragile roof tiles, scaffolding and ladders – all of which could easily be prevented, according to Building Safety Group’s technical manager, Chris Chapman. He said, “To significantly reduce the dangers of working at height, construction companies should always try to complete as much work as possible from the ground, ensure safe access and egress and, very importantly, make certain that any equipment used is suitable, stable and strong enough for the job.”
Volvo CE has also been enhancing is V machines so as to reduce the risk of falls and other accidents. In an effort to enhance the safety of both operators and other workers in the vicinity of the machine, the company has innovated a range of solutions, from the simple addition of high visibility safety rails and ground-level service points – to avoid trip and fall accidents – to sophisticated machine control systems, such as Dig Assist, which negates the need for workers to enter the excavation area in order to take measurements. Volvo’s cabs are ROPS (roll over protection systems) compliant, and LED lighting along with brightly painted handrails guide the operator to the cab, where visibility from within is maximised. Volvo Smart View has been introduced to avoid collisions by giving the operator 360 degree visibility and a birds-eye-view of the work area by fitting cameras to the front, side and rear of the machine. The cabs are also designed to ensure operator comfort, since operator fatigue and lack of concentration are considered to be major factors in many site accidents. The machines also feature overload indicators as standard, along with hydraulic attachment brackets and full dual circuit brake systems. In fact, Volvo is going one step further and trying to remove the operator from the equation entirely, thereby eliminating any risk of injury – to the operator, at least. Although its autonomous

HEALTH AND SAFETY Wearable technology
JCB has teamed up with Specsavers to develop a range of prescription safety glasses for construction workers
technology is still at the concept stage, the prototype L120 wheeled loader has actually done work at an asphalt plant in Sweden. Technology has an increasingly important role to play in safety. Vansteenkiste said, “Connected safety solutions that integrate radio-frequency identification, sensors, software and cloud technology now enable safety managers to access vast streams of data, which can be used to ensure workers receive the right training in the use of their personal protective equipment (PPE) and collective protective equipment (CPE). “They also help ensure that this equipment is up to date in terms of regulatory compliance, well-maintained and fit for purpose.” He added, “Not only does this intelligent, real-time data approach help prevent accidents, but it also enables businesses to streamline PPE and CPE compliance management and make informed decisions quickly. “In doing so, businesses can reduce costs and downtime whilst increasing efficiency and productivity.” Sub heading here
Mental health Kent Safety Solutions flags up mental health SHE (quality, safety, health, environment) consultancy Kent Safety Solutions has pointed out that mental health seems to be left out of workplace health and safety measures. Paul Makoff-Clark, managing director at the UK-based consultancy, warned that employers are failing to consider the impact of mental health as part of their health and safety procedures, despite the significant number of working days lost due to stress and other mental health-related issues. Statistics from HSE indicate that there were approximately 12 million days lost due to stress, depression and anxiety in 2015/16. Even though there is a legal requirement for organisations to have health and safety procedures in place, many employers apparently focus solely on the safety aspect when implementing policies and carrying out risk assessments. Makoff-Clark went on to say, “Safety controls are relatively straightforward to implement. But mental health is much more difficult to consider from a risk perspective due to the difficulties posed by pre-existing health conditions, less evident risks and potentially longer-term consequences.” Due to the fact that many credit-crunch roles remain unfulfilled, it is often the case that one person takes on additional responsibilities. This, combined with time-fixed deadlines, especially in the construction industry, has led to increased stress levels. According to Makoff-Clark, HSE has excellent, free tools for testing and monitoring stress at work, yet they are underused. To make use of those online tools, visit www.hse.gov.uk.

The multinational construction and development company Skanska, based in Sweden, recently instigated a new technology initiative in Cincinnati, US, aimed at preventing jobsite accidents. In collaboration with a team of researchers from the University of Michigan, it carried out an experiment using wearable technology on the construction site at Pleasant Run Elementary School in Mouth Healthy. For three days, teams of three workers wore Empatica wrist devices that measured such parameters as blood pressure, sweat levels, electrodermal activity, skin temperature, heart rate and stress on the body. The data was gathered in the hope that a problem could be indicated before an accident occurred. When the biometrics entered problematic territory, an alert was sent to the project manager, who then had a chance to correct the issue before it became a bigger problem. The aim of Skanska’s research is to develop a way of predicting accidents before they take place, in order to learn lessons before things go wrong rather than after. Skanska expects that the technology could be implemented industry-wide, in much the same way as hard hats, safety vests and gloves are standard equipment for construction workers. It is also hoped that the cost of the devices would be offset by lower insurance rates.
Clearly safer On the topic of PPE, JCB has teamed up with the high street retailer Specsavers to develop a range of prescription safety glasses for construction workers. A total of 20 JCB frames are being made available across the UK in men’s, women’s and unisex designs with metal and polycarbonate frames. By the end of the year, the safety glasses will be rolled out to all 1,700-plus Specsavers stores globally. JCB’s range offers a wide choice of lenses suitable for a variety of industrial settings and come complete with side shields. Specsavers Corporate Eyecare director of strategic alliances Jim Lythgow said, “We have subjected more than 440 pairs of prescription safety glasses to extremely rigorous tests. As you would expect from Specsavers and JCB, these glasses are tough.” iC

EXHIBITION NEWS: KOMATEK
The 15th Komatek followed Turkey’s constitutional referendum, and politics was a sensitive subject, but there was nonetheless a sense the future could be bright for Turkish construction.
Times are changing in Turkey omatek is Turkey’s largest construction equipment exhibition and has been taking place bi-annually in Ankara, for some 30 years. At this year’s show, there was a sense that the construction industry could potentially benefit from the hoped-for political stability – as well as some support from government. With this in mind, many of the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturers were in attendance, including Asian giants such as Korea’s Doosan Infracore and China’s Zoomlion. German manufacturers, Liebherr and the Wirtgen Group, also took significant space at the show. As for homegrown exhibitors, they were plentiful and had plenty to say about prospects for the future of the industry, both in Turkey and on a global scale. Teksan, one of the country’s leading manufacturers of gen sets, lighting towers and power systems, was at the show and the firm’s Sales and Marketing Board Member, Burak Başeğmezler, described how Teksan was keen to follow the Chinese lead and look to globalise its products. He said the firm had a mission to “meet the electric power demands of end users and service providers around the world,” and was clear that only with the best quality products could they make this happen. The firm already exprts to over 110 countries, with some 15,000 customers worldwide. Dincer Alkan While many of the Turkish firms at Komatek are exporting a significant percentage of their products, the domestic market is clearly vital to them. A spokesperson for MPG, which manufactures truck mounted knuckle boom cranes, truck mounted telescopic cranes, all terrain cranes, aerial working platforms and skid-steer loaders, said, “This market depends on the political situation. We still have some problems, but I think that from this moment, things will be better.”
K
“I see it when customers have come to visit us. And there are some very big projects here, especially in Istanbul, but in ever city in Turkey we are seeing more construction.” Another Turkish company, MTB, which manufactures hydraulic breakers, was at the show, and Dinçer Alkan, the firm’s Vice Chairman, echoed the sentiments of other exhibitors, saying, when he said how useful shows such as Komatek were to them. He said, “New and existing customers use it to come and Levant Baykal have discussions with us. We are strong in the market, but we need to introduce our new products and extend our brand. “Also, for example, we are constructing a new factory, north of Istanbul, which will allow us to double our productivity. These are things we need to talk about.” With Komatek being the biggest show in Turkey, one might think booking stands is a simple matter of making phone calls. To the show’s General Manager, Levant Baykal, it’s not that simple. He said, “We had a number of problems coming up to the exhibition, But once we get to Ankara, there are always in the region of 30,000 to 35,000 people – nothing has changed there. “The real problem for us was the exhibitor participation, with some very large companies not participating. We were worried that there would be a domino effect and others would follow, but that hasn’t happened, largely because of the support we have from IMDER [Turkey Construction Machinery Manufacturers and Distributors Association]. “I think we have around 90% of the attendance we had in 2015, and I believe we have done as well as we could do – and we are the best achieving exhibition in Turkey. This year, there are a lot of foreign nationals coming here, which is good. This is probably the first time they have come here, and they are certainly interested in what’s going on.” iC

EQUIPMENT MARKET REVIEW: WHEELED LOADERS
Wheeled workhorses Despite a relative decline in popularity in the stronghold market of China, wheeled loaders enjoy a universal appeal in construction equipment markets around the world.

lobal wheeled loader sales exceeded 120,000 machines last year and the Off-Highway Research put the value of the segment at US$12.5 billion. With equipment markets around the world now entering a period of recovery, sales of this type of machine are expected to rise to more than 150,000 units by 2021, with a value of some US$15.7 billion. In terms of individual markets, China remains the most important in the world for wheeled loader sales, with demand of some 47,500 machines last year. Although this represented almost 40% of the global wheeled loader market, it is a far cray from the peak year of 2011, when a staggering 219,000 wheeled loaders were sold in China, representing two thirds of the global market. China has had a historic affinity for wheeled loaders, as for many decades these were the mainstay of the large state-owned construction equipment manufacturers such as Chenggong, Lingong (now SDLG), Liugong, XCMG and their like.
Falling sales However, in the mid-1990s, international equipment manufacturers started to enter the Chinese market and introduce crawler excavators, and in the last decade or so Chinese manufacturers have developed their own such machines. The greater versatility and higher productivity of excavators means they have now replaced wheeled loaders in China in many applications. As a result, wheeled loaders now represent about 40% of the Chinese construction equipment market in unit terms, compared to 50% just six years ago. Although absolute sales of wheeled loaders are expected to increase over the next five years as the market returns to health, Off-Highway Research expects their proportional share of the Chinese market to fall to about 33% by 2021. Despite the relative decrease in popularity in this key market, wheeled loaders still have an essential position in the global construction equipment sector. Worldwide in value terms the

segment is second only to crawler excavators and in volume terms, about one out of every six pieces of construction equipment sold around the world is a wheeled loader.
Higher spec, higher prices In volume terms, Europe is the second largest regional market in the world. This is due to a strong affinity for compact wheeled loaders in Germany and a number of other countries. These machines typically have a bucket capacity of 1m3 or less and an engine of less than 56 kW, which avoids the requirement for Stage IV exhaust emissions regulations. Almost 12,000 such machines were sold in Europe last year, about 60% of them in Germany. For larger wheeled loaders, North America is the second largest market after China in volume terms. However, in value terms it is worth two to three times that of China, due to the higher specification of equipment, including the requirement for Tier 4 Final-compliant engines. Elsewhere in the world, wheeled loaders enjoy a fairly universal popularity. The only major exception is India, where the country’s long running love affair with backhoe loaders and a strong market for crawler excavators has left little room for wheeled loaders. In terms of suppliers, Off-Highway Research counts more than 55 wheeled loader manufacturers around the world. The larger Chinese groups tend to be the leaders in volume terms, but the majority of their sales are made domestically. Among the international companies, Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo enjoy some of the strongest positions. iC
