COMMENT re we all BIM ready? More to the point, do we want or need to be? BIM, or Building Information Modelling, is the system of digitally representing the physical characteristics of a construction project, and a basis on which a team can share information about a project, ensuring high standards are maintained across different construction disciplines. Like it or not, BIM is no longer a new-fangled technological add-on that might help you win a construction project; it is in some cases mandatory if you wish to tender for a construction job. In April this year, the UK government made the use of Level 2 BIM a mandatory requirement for contractors tendering for public sector construction projects. What Level 2 BIM means in basic terms is that, while all parties collaborating on the project could have their own 3D model, each individual model must be shareable through a common file format. You may think it surprising that the UK government has gone so far as to make the use of BIM a mandatory element of tenders, but it’s not alone. At an industry forum in Moscow last month, Russia’s head of the construction, housing and utilities ministry, Mikhail Menn, said BIM was set to become compulsory on all government-commissioned projects after 2018. Menn said his government had been influenced by the British programme, which, he concluded was directly responsible for a 30% reduction in construction cost. “Their experience,” he said, “showed that we, in Russia, are heading in a 100% right direction.” While no other governments have so far taken the step of producing a mandate for the use of BIM, the fact that cost reductions are resulting from BIM means its adoption worldwide is almost assured. There is no BIM legislation at the moment in the US, yet it is a world leader in terms of its adoption, as Stateside entrepreneurs have clearly been pushing its potential for some time. Some reports say there is already as much as 70% adoption in the US. It remains to be seen, however, whether the UK government ‘forcing’ the issue will have a beneficial or detrimental effect on the industry. Detractors have warned that problems could arise if the development of new tools such as BIM is not combined with the evolution of the construction process. In the coming months in International Construction, we will be returning to the subject of the advance of BIM, as well as construction technology generally. Watch this space and enjoy the magazine.

WORLD NEWS HIGHLIGHTS CHINA Sany Heavy Industry has said it is using “smart manufacturing” to ameliorate its losses. Sany believes it could cut some 20% of operational costs at its Hunan province factory, using digitisation. The company’s profits nosedived las year, but is the most profitable construction equipment maker in China in the first half of this year, with net profits of 138 million yuan (US$ 20.7 million).

GERMANY Bilfinger has announced the completion of the sale of its building and facility segment to Swedish private equity group EQT. The fee agreed for the segment is €1.2 billion, which is broken down in to two purchase price components that are due once EQT re-sells the segment. Bilfinger will be entitled to 49% of the resale proceeds from EQT.

AUSTRIA Austrian-based Doka Group has acquired Dutch technology specialists BAS in a bid to improve its solutions in construction products. Headquartered in Venlo, the Netherlands, BAS researches and develops construction materials, including concrete, while Doka produces and supplies formwork. Doka believes that its acquisition of BAS will help the company to be more costefficient through specialist research. It claimed that one study suggested 30% of construction costs came from activities that generated no value, such as mistakes. SWEDEN Preparation work has begun on the construction of a new port in Stockholm, Sweden, with NCC handling rock work and the construction of a rail connection. Ports of Stockholm is building Stockholm Norvik Port, and new facility for rolling goods and container traffic. NCC’s contract, which is worth SEK500 million (€52.12 million), will take two and a half years to complete.

QATAR Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) has signed a deal to upgrade Qatar’s heavily-used E-Ring expressway. The South Korean construction company was awarded the US$ 730 million contract by Ashgal, Qatar’s public works authority. The new deal follows Daewoo E&C’s well received work on an even larger expressway project in the country.

PANAMA

Race hots up for canal bridge contract Major global construction companies are vying for US$ 1 billion project on expanded waterway ix major consortia have been placed on the shortlist to build the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal. All six organisations reportedly submitted satisfactory prequalification documents to Panama’s Ministry of Public Works in May. The cable-stayed 1,118 m long bridge will cross the canal north of the Bridge of the Americas. Along with six lanes for cars, the bridge is also expected to carry two further lanes for the Metro line. Some of the major firms driving their respective partnerships towards the US$ 1 billion contract are: US-based Dragados; Brazil’s Construtora Norberto Odebrecht; South Korea’s Hyundai; and Italian firm Astaldi; as well as a number of state-owned Chinese firms, including China Communications Construction Company and China State Engineering Corporation. A final version of the tender expected by the end of this month.

S

US

Construction equipment glut A report in The Wall Street Journal has highlighted the growing glut of secondhand construction equipment on the US market. The used equipment, it says, is having a damaging and potentially long-term effect on sales for manufacturers such as Caterpillar, John Deere and Volvo. With the price of used machinery down 10% on last year, Caterpillar says its dealers are being put under pressure to offer hefty discounts. Along with this downward pressure, the rental market is booming, with around half of new equipment sales currently going to

rental businesses – a number which some believe could rise to 60% in the next five years. Contractors are also turning to leasing new equipment. Frank Fowler, senior VP of used equipment at Caterpillar dealer Ring Power, said, “A guy can lease a machine for a year or two and pay as little as one-third of what he could get it for as a rental.” The report says, with leasing on the rise, competition for new models could grow, increasing the glut in the used equipment market. The project is expected to be completed in October 2018.

TURKEY

New bridge gets nod Work on the world’s longest suspension bridge, in northwest Turkey, is set to commence in March next year. Turkish prime minister, Binali Yildirim, announced the official launch of the project at a cabinet meeting last week. According to the local press, the announcement caused house prices in the region of Canakkale to soar by 700%. The 3.6 km bridge will cross the Dardanelles strait, connecting Gallipoli on the European side with Lapseki on the Asian side. It is reported that the bridge will have the longest span of any bridge in the world, possibly running to more than 2 km. The current record is held by the US$ 4.6 billion Akashi-Kaikyo bridge in Japan, with a central span of 1,991 m. When it opens, the bridge will carry the 352-km Kinah-toSavastepe motorway, which is due for completion in 2023. Presently, three bridges connect Europe and Asia, all in Istanbul.

WORLD NEWS ECUADOR Construction of what will be the world’s highest metro system – Metro de Quito – is underway in Quito, Ecuador. The first line will stretch over 20 km through the capital of Ecuador, 2,800 m above sea level. The line will also see 15 metro stations built en route. The tunnel alignment of the Metro Line 1 will run at a depth of 20 to 25 m below the city. Once completed, the metro is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the city, transporting 350,000 people per day. Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) from German manufacturers Herrenknecht and Schwanau will be used to excavate the tunnels. Herrenknecht has also used two earth pressure balance (EPB) shields, which will work their way through the volcanic ground. EPB shields turn the excavated material into a soil paste that is used as pliable, plastic support medium.

Global ports operator DP World has signed an agreement to develop a new commercial port at Berbera, in the Federal Republic of Somaliland. The Dubai-based firm will invest up to US$ 442 million for a 65% stake in the first phase of the project, which will include a 400 m quay and a 250,000 m2 container yard, as well as gantry cranes and reach stackers. The government of the breakaway republic will fund the remainder of the project. The agreement stipulates that DP World will run the port for a minimum 30-year period. The republic’s government says the port will be a regional hub, to improve the economy of the country which has the fourth-lowest GDP per capita in the world. DP World chairman, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, said, Investment in this natural deepwater port will attract more shipping lines to East Africa and its modernisation will act as a catalyst for the growth of the country and the region’s economy.”

Camargo Corrêa, one of the largest construction companies in Brazil, is up for sale, with Chinese construction giant CCCC reportedly interested in buying the offered 100% stake. The information was disclosed in the Brazilian business press this week. Sources at Camargo Corrêa were cited, but no names were given. The sources claim there is definite interest in the purchase from CCCC. The Camargo Corrêa group has suffered since its conviction for criminal activities connected with the construction of the Abreu e Lima refinery, owned by Petrobras. As a result of the police investigation, a number of the company’s board members were arrested, and subsequent lawsuits have destabilised the company financially. While CCCC is the frontrunner in the proposed sale, it is reported that French and Spanish firms have also shown an interest in the familyowned company.

China Railway Group (CRG) has signed a RMB 8.1 billion (US$ 1.2 billion) agreement to build the first three sections of the BotenVientiane Railway Project. When completed the 414 km line will run from Boten, on Laos’ northern border with China, to the country’s capital, Vientiane, on the border with Thailand in the south. The single-track electrified mixed traffic line will be suitable for 160 km/h passenger and 120 km/h freight services, and the line will include 31 stations. The 60-month project will be undertaken by three subsidiaries of CRG; it follows the awarding last year of a RMB 2.3 billion (US$ 344 million) rail project in Laos, to another of its subsidiary companies. Chenyi Lu, a senior analyst at credit rating firm Moody’s, said the deal was “credit positive,” adding, “The award demonstrates the group’s strong capabilities with cutting-edge technologies in railway, bridge and tunnel construction to win largescale and complex projects overseas.”

Russia reboots nuclear plant in Iran

Hyundai in plant deal

Italian construction firm Astaldi says it has signed a contract to take on the underground works beneath two sections of the Brenner Base Tunnel. When completed, the tunnel, running between Italy and Austria, will provide a flatter and faster route for trains than the current line between Innsbrück and Venezia. Due for completion in 2026, the € 8.8 billion tunnel will be the longest in the world at 64 route-km, including the existing Innsbrück bypass. The contract signed by the Astaldi consortium has a reported value of around € 1 bn, and will see the involved companies excavating some 69 km of tunnel, primarily via an exploratory bore and two running tunnels. Astaldi’s share of the project equates to 42.5%, while partner Ghella holds 42.4%. The other companies in the consortium are COGEIS, Oberosler Cav Pietro and PAC, each with a 5% share.

THAILAND

Green light for rail link The Chinese and Thai governments have reached agreement over a highspeed rail link in Thailand. Discussions regarding the 873 km network have largely been stalled by disagreements over costs. This week, following three days of talks with Chinese officials, Thailand’s transport minister said both sides had agreed a price of 179 billion baht (US$ 5.1 billion) for the first phase. The line will run 271 km, from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, and will be followed by two more phases: a 355 km section, from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai province, bordering Laos; and a 246.5 km section, from Saraburi province to Rayong province. As part of the latest agreement, Thailand will pay for all rail construction, while China is set to fund the line’s technical systems.

$ 10 billion contract for Bushehr nuclear plant onstruction of a nuclear power plant is now underway in the Iranian city of Bushehr. The contract for the project, which was made between Iran and Russia, continues the expansion of the plant that was first launched back in 1975, but then halted in 1979, following the Islamic revolution against the ruling shah and the subsequent US embargo on high-tech supplies into the country. The US action caused the German manufacturers to withdraw from the project, which then lay dormant until Russia agreed to complete the Phase 1 work on the plant in 1998. Phase 2 of the Bushehr plant comprises two VVEW-1000 1,000 MW reactors being added to the one already operating on the site. The contract, with an estimated cost of US$ 10 billion, reportedly includes the option of a further six reactors, to be installed within the country over the next 10 years. During the opening ceremony, Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said, “We are opening a new page in the trend of our peaceful industrial nuclear activities.” At the same event, Sergey Kiriyenko, head of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, said, “The competition of Phase 1 has proven that Russia always delivers on its promises to foreign partners, regardless of the political climate in the world.”

C

ISRAEL The bodies of six workers have been recovered following the collapse of an under-construction car park building in northern Tel Aviv. More than 20 people were also injured in the collapse, which occurred at midday on Monday, 5 September. Major General Yoel Strick, the chief of the Home Front Command, in charge of the recovery operation, said, “Today the rescue operation ended with the recovery of the last person who was trapped in the ruins, unfortunately he was no longer alive. We mourn with the families of the dead.” Police have questioned several senior officials with the companies that operate the site, including Ronen Ginsburg, CEO of the construction firm Danya Cebus, a daughter company of Africa Israel. While the recovery operation was ongoing, Ginsburg addressed a committee, saying that “the incident has nothing to with work safety.” Ginsburg was unable to comment on the details of the ongoing investigation, but said “the company will do everything possible to cooperate with the investigation.”

A consortium led by Hyundai Engineering has won a KRW 5.6 trillion (US$ 5.16 billion) contract to build fertilizer plants in Kozmino in Nakhodka, Russia. Along with Hyundai E&C and the Japanese engineering firm Toyo, Hyundai Engineering will build two ammonia production plants with a combined daily capacity of 6,700 tonnes, two urea plants with combined daily capacity of 6,100 tonnes, and a methanol plant with a daily capacity of 3,000 tonnes. The deal was signed following a meeting of the Korean president Park Geun-hye and her Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Vladivostok. The consortium, which was selected as a preferred bidder for the plants in September 2014, was awarded the contract by Russia’s Nakhodka Mineral Fertilizers Factory, a subsidiary of the National Chemical Group. The construction of the plants is set to be completed in 62 months.

US

Equipment exports still down Exports of US-manufactured construction equipment were down 24% for the first half of 2016, compared to the same period a year ago, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). The association said that US$ 5.65 billion of construction equipment was exported to global markets during the first six months of the year. The only region which saw an increase was Europe, up 2%, to US$ 898 million. Meanwhile, Canada – the US’s biggest export market – dropped 23% to US$ 2.4 billion. The biggest fall came from South America, at 49%, to US$ 504 million. There were also falls in Africa (43%), Australia/Oceania (30%), Asia (28%) and Central America (7%).

WORLD NEWS HIGHLIGHTS GLOBAL North Carolina-based IronDirect has today launched a new buying and selling platform for construction equipment. The company’s press release states the site aims to offer a range of premium brand machines, including bulldozers, wheeled loaders, excavators and telehandlers, as well as attachments and parts. The basis of the new model is that potential buyers gain access to a large range of “value-priced” equipment from global manufacturers. GERMANY German-based contractor Hochtief has signed a €138 million (US$ 155.6 million) contract to build a multi-purpose high-rise building in Frankfurt, Germany, named the Marienturm. The 41-storey, 155 m high office tower will include a restaurant, café, gym, children’s day care centre and conference space. The gross floor area will cover some 70,000m². Hochtief said the Marienturm would add a “further striking element” to the downtown Frankfurt skyline, which already includes several high-rise buildings. AUSTRALIA Australian mining and heavy equipment rental company Emeco has agreed to merge with Orionstone and Andy’s Earthmovers in a three-way transaction that also included its recapitalisation. Plant in southern state could generate up to 5 GW solar power project in Pavagada in central southern India is set to be the world’s largest, according to the country’s energy minister. DK Shivakumar has suggested that the plant, with published plans to cover five square kilometres and generate 2 GW of power, could ultimately generate some 5 GW of power. Shivakumar said, “We have already acquired 1,200 acres of land for setting up the plant and the work will start soon. Once it is commissioned, the power problem being faced by the state will be eased to a great extent.” The plant - in the state of Karnataka and some 160 km north of Bengaluru – will be developed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), and will be the largest of more than 20 solar parks approved by the state’s energy ministry. Currently, Karnataka produces 4 GW of renewable energy, but plans so far approved could lead to the generation of around 20 GW. Plans for the Pavagada site call for the solar plant being split into lots of 50 MW, which will be auctioned to investors – a plan that is already underway.

PERU

Govt shocked by rail price tag A proposed tanscontinental railway line, running 5,300 km, from Brazil’s Atlantic coast to Peru’s Pacific coast, is in doubt due to its US$ 60 billion price tag. The line would cut through both the Andes and the Amazon, lowering the cost of transporting goods from Latin America to Asia. China first suggested the rail link in 2014, and Peru agreed to a feasibility study for the project

last year. At that time, a total cost of around US$ 10 billion was suggested for the line. When a delegation from Lima met Chinese officials in Beijing, however, they admitted to being surprised by the US$ 60 billion estimate. Peru’s vice president and transportation minister, Martin Vizcarra, said, “With that money,” he said, “we could build a lot of projects to benefit Peruvians.”

Vinci Concessions has signed an agreement with Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) for the development of concession schemes for road infrastructures in Vietnam. The agreement also focuses on construction, financing and operation of new greenfield motorway projects by VEC – the Vietnamese Highways Agency – and Vinci Concessions. As part of the strategic partnership, Vinci Concessions, via its subsidiary Vinci Highways, will take part in Vietnam’s infrastructure development programme. The country plans to build a national expressway network, including the 1,800km north-south expressway. Vinci said the agreement was a demonstration of its expansion in high-growth countries. It added that the company was already present in Asia via its subsidiary Vinci Airports, which operated the airports in Cambodia and Japan. Vinci said the agreement further expressed its interest to expand outside of Europe.

Kepco in for nuclear deal A South Korean construction company is reportedly in talks to take a stake in a new nuclear power plant in northwest England. Sources claim the state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) is closing in on investing in the £10 billion (US$ 13 billion) Moorside Power Station project. The NuGen consortium, comprising French utility firm Engie and Toshiba’s US-based nuclear power arm Westinghouse Electric Company, is set to build three AP1000 reactors at the plant, which is expected to be operating by 2025, and will ultimately produce 3.8 GW of power, 7% of Britain’s current electricity needs.

he construction equipment market in Iran could more than double over the next five years, according to a study by Off-Highway Research (OHR). It said construction equipment sales in Iran exceeded 3,500 units last year, and in the recent past it has been as high as 5,000 machines per year. OHR said the market will exceed this high in the coming five years as sanctions are lifted and the country’s mineral, gas and oil wealth is tapped. “The dominant factor in the recent development of the Iranian market for construction machinery has, of course, been the imposition of nuclearrelated sanctions. By the time the current President Hassan Rouhani came to power in 2013, the market had fallen to fewer than 3,000 new machines. A slight rebound since then, related to the change in government, should not detract from the fact that the market is currently at a very low ebb,” said the detailed report. However, with UN sanctions now lifted and the Iranian government investing in oil, gas and mineral infrastructure, prospects have brightened for the construction equipment industry. This stands to benefit both the domestic industry – around half the construction equipment sold in Iran is domestically manufactured – and international suppliers. The 160 page report, The Construction Equipment Industry in Iran – available via the khl.com website – includes a detailed analysis of the market for 14 individual types of construction equipment. As well as this sales analysis, the report looks in depth at the production of construction equipment in Iran, data by machine type and manufacturer, along with manufacturer profiles. Further sections include distributor profiles and pertinent background information on the Iranian economy. The report is currently available through the khl.com website. See more on the Iranian construction market on pages 15 & 19.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK Middle East

Recovery will take time The continuing slump in oil prices, regional political instability and war with the Islamic State are all playing a part in restraining economic growth in the Middle East, as Scott Hazelton reports. he Middle East is set to face continued challenges and risks to its economic prospects into 2017. In 2015, the region shifted from current account surpluses to deficits, although a return to surplus is expected in 2017 as oil prices recover. Lower oil prices have hurt Iran, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, but are helping Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. Some of the region’s oil exporters are more vulnerable to the price slide than others. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE have substantial financial reserves, but Bahrain and Oman have less flexibility. Iran also has limited reserved, but the end of sanctions is raising oil exports and economic growth. With oil prices not expected to return to $100/barrel until 2022, the pressure from low oil prices will remain for an extended period of time. Our forecast assumes the Brent price of oil averages US$ 43/barrel in 2016 and US$57/ barrel in 2017. Assuming we do not see a sharp price recovery, regional oil producers need to address internal and external imbalances from reduced income through fiscal adjustment and reforms. Risks to global growth, which is expected to slow to under 2.5% in 2016, could push oil prices lower than current projections and further hamper the region, with greater policy adjustments needed for oil exporters, while oil importers would also face softer external demand. The region’s growth prospects will remain tepid for at least the next few quarters, with risks lying

T

more on the downside, given the uncertainties regarding the oil market and geopolitical developments.

The Iran question The outlier is Iran; the Islamic Republic should see economic activity pick up following the January 2016 lifting of sanctions under its nuclear deal. Iran’s economy is projected to expand 4.3% in fiscal year (FY) 2016/17. The economic tailwind from the removal of sanctions will be restrained by the challenges of doing business in Iran, including regulatory and legal risks, as well as the low oil-price environment and other restrictions remaining in place against the Islamic Republic. As oil gains dissipate amid lower prices, nonoil activities will provide the main support for GCC economies; GDP growth is projected to rebound to an average rate of just under 4.0% by 2018–20. We expect strong performances in key sectors such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, and trade and tourism. Addressing issues such as job creation and competitiveness will be critical to regional stability and economic success. Unemployment, especially among youth, remains high, leaving countries vulnerable to future unrest. Continued development in physical and social infrastructure is needed to boost economic activity and employment and attract investment. Chart 1 indicates the impact of a stabilising regional economy with only moderate increases

in oil prices. In general, 2016 is looking to be weaker than 2015, and 2017 offers about the same growth potential as 2016. There will be some modest improvement in 2018, but the short and medium terms hold regional growth steady. The historically weaker markets, such as Bahrain and Jordan, get the least incremental lift as the forecast progresses.

Looking ahead Over the next five years, total construction spending in the Middle East will increase at a compound annual rate of about 3.6% in real terms. This growth is quite similar across structure types, although there is significant variation within individual countries. Over the next five years, Qatar offers the strongest real construction growth at 10.5%. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the largest construction markets, each being twice the size of Qatari construction, offer five year growth of 3.5% and 3.7% respectively. Growth for Saudi Arabia represents a significant slowing from the prior five years, when high oil prices allowed accelerated housing and industrial city expansion to mitigate unrest from the Arab Spring. Saudi growth in the medium term is heavily oriented toward residential construction, partially due to continued work within its industrial cities – a national hedge against excessive oil dependence. Infrastructure spending is constrained by the need to manage fiscal spending discipline in a low oil environment, but significant rail and road projects are underway. As strong as Qatar’s growth may be, it slows from the past five years. The need to prepare for the 2022 World Cup is not the only driver of construction, although it will drive venue and infrastructure construction spending on top of ambitious energy infrastructure improvements. The challenge for Qatar is prioritising projects to avoid overheating the construction economy. Qatar began stadium construction sooner than most host countries for major events. While this means that some stadiums will not be brand new for the World Cup, it levels out infrastructure investment. Hence our view of a gradually accelerating construction market through 2020. The United Arab Emirates also performs relatively well. In contrast to its prior boom, construction in Dubai is trending to be more ‘horizontal’ than ‘vertical’ as developers take advantage of land availability and avoid the cost of high-rise construction. Spreading development

Indeed, it is instructive to view the composition of construction growth across countries in Chart 2. Across much of the region, non-residential structures will recover as tourism gains greater share of many economies (lodging/retail) and

low oil prices prod continuing diversification from energy dependence (office and industrial structures). The need to improve quality of life in some countries also boosts institutional spending on healthcare and education. Residential also does well, partly due to improving economics, but also due to demographics – the Middle East has some of the strongest household formation rates in the world.

Infrastructure

Overall, Middle Eastern construction markets have seen their growth prospects curtailed compared to prior expectation. Nevertheless, the region remains a global leader. While several years of relatively flat growth limit the upside potential, the worst of the oil price shock is over and improving global economic conditions will gradually create lift, particularly in countries with specific plans for diversification. iC

Why oil is not all In a region that has withstood so much geopolitical uncertainty in recent years, governments have learned to roll with the punches – and build big. Mike Hayes reports. ontinuing low oil prices, combined with an uncertain geopolitical outlook, have made for a challenging year in the majority of Middle Eastern countries. In its Annual GCC Construction Survey in December 2015, law firm Pinsent Masons asked industry professionals how confident they were about the coming year. Some 32% said they felt optimistic, a significant decline from the 77% who had declared optimism 12 months earlier. This region is of course famous for defying all ‘boom and bust’ logic, and many countries are demonstrating a desire to continue their programmes of development. Countries such as Saudi Arabia are utilising their oil-based prosperity to transform their economies, aiming to become more sustainable and less dependent on oil revenues moving forward. As an example, the Jubail industrial city development, in the eastern province of the country, spans 1,016 km2 and provides petrochemical and other industrial complexes, as well as major harbour and port facilities, telecommunications, and a highway system.

C

Manged by Bechtel, Jubail is a remarkable civil engineering project, possibly the biggest ongoing in the world. The development comprises two ports – one industrial, the other commercial – located within a 44 km2 artificial harbour, protected by 18 km of breakwater. The industrial port handles materials such as steel, fertilizers, chemicals and petrochemicals. It works with liquid cargo and dry bulk – such as iron ore, alumina, sulfur, and metalized sponge briquettes – at solids and liquid quays, and a 178-hectare refinery tank farm. Offshore terminals berth 300,000 deadweight tonnage product tankers and unload iron ore from 200,000 dead-weight tonnage bulk carriers. Between Jubail and the nearby Ras Al Khair industrial

city, an estimated 140,000 people are currently employed, a number which is predicted to rise to 190,000 by 2021. Over the next five years, Bechtel’s work will focus on providing residential accommodation and education facilities such as a 18,000-student ‘greenfield’ university as well as roads, bridges, medical centres and power, water and waste facilities. At Ras Al Khair, Bechtel completed its work on the world’s largest aluminium smelter in 2013. This vast project included the construction of two high-amperage potlines that produce 740,000 metric tons of aluminium per year. As part of the delivery process, Bechtel also had to construct the world’s largest integrated cast house (with 15 furnaces), a carbon plant and a rail line to transport bauxite from a mine at Al Ba’itha, some 400 km to the west.

High-profile construction With its hosing of the Fifa World Cup of football just six years away, Qatar is another country experiencing rapid change and expansion. On the face of it, the 2016 situation doesn’t look good, with Qatar announcing its first budget deficit in 15 years. As opposed to pulling the plug on major projects, however, the government is identifying alternative forms of financing (ie domestic banks and capital markets) and streamlining existing projects. Among the projects sure to come under increased scrutiny are those earmarked for the World Cup, including the recently awarded contract for the Al Rayyan Stadium. India’s biggest construction firm, Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), and Qatari company Al Balagh Trading & Contracting were jointly appointed as the main contractors to build the high-profile 40,000-capacity stadium, at a reported value of around US$ 360 million. Momentum on the stadium project is now set to gather pace, following the completion of excavation works at the site in the summer. The 450,000 m2 precinct is due for completion in 2018. Qatar’s public works authority, Ashghal, is currently working on numerous projects worth more than QR 39 billion (US$ 11 billion), as part of its programme of developing the country’s expressways. According to the latest Ashghal report,

The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, showcased by Dubai-based developer Emaar Properties

there are 11 expressway projects underway, with a further ten in the design stage. Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C), for example, recently signed a deal to upgrade the heavily-used E-Ring expressway. The South Korean construction company was awarded the US$ 730 million contract by Ashgal, following the firm’s successful work on an even larger expressway project in the country. The current contract calls for Daewoo E&C to extend the expressway connecting the southern part of Qatar’s capital, Doha, by 4.5 km, as well as adding roads with up to 14 lanes and three multi-level intersections.

And, speaking of Emaar, the latest and possibly greatest addition to the Dubai skyline will be The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, being developed by Emaar Properties. At 928 m in height (100 m taller than the world’s current tallest, the Burj Khalifa), The Tower will not match Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Tower, but is staggering nonetheless. With a delivery date of 2019, it is hoped The Tower will be ready by the time Dubai’s Expo 2020 commences. At the project’s launch, the tower’s architect, Santiago Calatrava, said its construction was likely to be split between three contractors, with one responsible for the piling work, another for the main concrete base and a third for steelwork, including the fabrication of cables, which could be the longest ever used on a structure. He said, “We want to start on the foundations very soon. For the moment, we are concentrated on the packages we need to send out as soon as possible.” Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, said, “We are in one of the most exciting phases of our growth strategy having launched a brand new icon for the city.” Another of the emirate’s headline mega-projects is La Mer, Jumeirah, a residential and commercial development that will ultimately require the reclamation of over 1 million m2 of land from the sea. Developer Meraas awarded a US$ 239 million contract to the joint-venture contractor Al Futtaim Carillion. The initial work included the demolition and removal of existing breakwaters, and the construction of rock revetments, plus extensive dredging and reclamation works, with more than 50 marine units and 50 long boom excavators utilised.

In the midst of a real estate slowdown in the region, one of Dubai’s biggest developers, Emaar, recently reported second-quarter net profits of AED 1.2 billion (US$ 327 million), an 8% Meva formwork in place on the curved shore protection wall on the La Mer Jumeirah project

As part of the land reclamation operation, experts from Meva KHK Formwork Systems in Dubai were called in to provide the formwork to create a curved shore protection wall with an offset crown and slanted inside surface. The project is currently 60% complete, with completion expected before the end of next year.

Ambitious projects Bahrain is another country which has proved extremely resilient in the face of the global slowdown. Real estate analyst Reidin reports that the construction industry posted 4.5% year-on-year growth in 2015. According to the firm, this trend, combined with the government’s recent decision to allow foreigners to acquire 100% ownership of businesses in Bahrain, should spur growth in the property sector. Looking at industrial developments, the largely state-owned Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) is investing US$ 3.5 billion in its Line 6 Expansion Project, which is set to include the construction of new factory facilities, as well as a fifth power station, with a capacity of 1350 MW. In total, the expansion is expected to boost metal production by some 540,000 tonnes per annum, bringing Alba’s total capacity up to more than 1.5 million tonnes a year, and making the firm the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter. While possibly the biggest construction project currently underway in Bahrain, the Alba expansion is far from being the only one to hit the headlines.

Largely thanks to financing from GCC partners, via the Gulf Development Programme, Bahrain is alive with major construction activity, including highways and bridges development, a regional rail link proposal that could extend to some 2,000 km, and further ambitious power and energy developments, with energy minister Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza revealing US$ 4 billion would be spent on power and water projects between 2015 and 2019.

Precast record breaker In Iraq, summers are incredibly hot and dry, while winters can be very wet, making for a challenging environment for construction work. Nevertheless, Korean construction group Hanwha Engineering & Construction (Hanwha E&C), is undertaking the fastpaced construction of the US$ 10 billion Bismayah New City development, 10 km south of Baghdad. Bismayah is the largest residential development in the history of the country and will ultimately house an estimated 600,000 people. To ensure the speed of construction meets the requirements of the Iraqi government (completion is expected by 2019-20), Hanwha called on the services of Finnish precast production technology firm Elematic, who erected the world’s largest precast concrete plant next to the site itself. The plant will produce all precast elements for the project, including hollow-core slabs, sandwich walls, solid walls and stars, and foundation elements. In all, the plant will deliver precast concrete for a staggering 8,000 housing m2 per day. By late January this year, Hanwha had cast almost 10% of the precast elements for the city’s apartment towers. Elements for p aalmost 82 buildings had been cast and erection was structurally ccomplete on almost 70 towers. On site, 10 to 12 teams currently work on the apartment towers, one to each building. w According to Hanwha, it erects and completes a storey in nine days on average, while the overall structure of an apartment d ttower takes about 102 days. The standard design and cyclical eerection sequences, supported by efficient site logistics and plenty of buffer stock, enables the pattern of regular erection p iC ttiming to be achieved.

SPECIAL REPORT Atlas GmbH

The strength of Atlas After bbuying Aft i th the lloss-making ki G German crane and excavator firm Atlas from Terex, Fil Filipov has breathed new life into the business, as Mike Hayes reports. here is no mistaking the philosophy of Atlas Maschinen GmbH. On entering the company’s headquarters, visitors might well notice the legend on the reception area clock, unashamedly announcing “Time is money”. Fil Filipov bought Atlas from his former employer Terex in 2010, and wasted none of this precious time as he set about restructuring the company, in an effort to halt its US$ 2 milliona-month losses. Terex had been unsuccessfully looking for a buyer for this troublesome arm of its business, when Filipov – on the sage advice of his wife, Veronique – took it off their hands for a nominal fee. Terex were clearly happy to be rid of Atlas, to the extent that, as Filipov said at the time, “some cash injection [from Terex] hit the balance sheet”. What Terex either couldn’t see or was not prepared to contemplate was that, as a provider of niche and specialist construction equipment, Atlas was struggling to flourish as part of its huge corporate machine. Filipov decided to take the company back to its roots, bringing back the orange livery and the prominent Atlas logo, and – perhaps all importantly – ensuring the company’s former sales agents could clearly see that the small, independent Atlas of old

was back in play. He also immediately settled some € 3 million (US$ 3.35 million) worth of warranty claims, and told staff he wanted any further claims dealt with within one week of their arrival. Demonstrating the core of his business philosophy – ‘pain for gain’ – Filipov says, “Our materials costs are about 75% of our total costs. If you don’t get cost reductions, you’ll never be profitable. We didn’t increase the price of the units, we just started reducing – people, cars, everything.” Today, Atlas is a changed company; surprisingly, much of this is due not to Filipov but to the company’s managing director, Brahim Stitou, who has taken Filipov’s ‘Filosophy’ of turning around ailing companies and run with it. An employee of Atlas for 20 years, Stitou’s amiable appearance belies his steely resolve – he makes no apologies for what some

Atlas Cranes signs new US deal Market share grows with State-side expansion for German crane S firm Irving Equipment has signed a contract with Atlas GmbH to be the exclusive importer and primary distributor for Atlas Cranes in the States. Additionally, Irving will offer ready truck and crane packages, which will be assembled at its facility in Tiffin, Ohio. Irving’s new facility will serve as the new HQ of Atlas Cranes, offering sales, installation and full service of cranes, along with boom inspection, repair and certification.

U

might call a ruthless root and branch streamlining of the company. During a tour of the Atlas headquarters in Ganderkesee, he demonstrated a passion for saving money and increasing productivity. Filipov clearly approved of Stitou’s work ethic from the start, giving him the director of cost reduction in 2010. Since then, staff numbers have been reduced from around 750 to some 420, and sales per member of staff have pretty much doubled. Stitou himself is a self-confessed workaholic – a man who often arrives at 6am and leaves at 10pm; there is even evidence he picks up litter while showing journalists around the factory. Along with Filipov, he has stripped out all notions of corporate hierarchy – there are virtually no meetings, as there is essentially only one day-to-day decision maker…Stitou. As an example of how minutely things are managed, the time taken by workers to go to the snack shop for a sandwich or a drink has been virtually eliminated by the introduction of free food and drink from a box, which is basically opened to order on the factory floor. If workers need a small spare part from another building, they use bicycles to speed up the process – and form-filling and permissions are a thing of the past. When they get to the spare parts stores, of course, they find that, instead of costly staff on hand to deal with requests, the retrieval system is almost completely automated. Stitou spends much of his time hopping between the Atlas headquarters in Ganderkesee, and two further factories in nearby Delmenhorst and Vechta. None of the workers at any of the sites are surprised to see him on the factory floor – spot checks are clearly a regular occurrence. At the Delmenhorst factory, he mentioned the fact that some

The 1404ZW railroad excavator epitomises the specialist equipment on which Atlas built its reputation

basic parts are assembled by inmates at the local prison – they receive gainful employment and Atlas makes further cost reductions. As far as its core business goes, Atlas is doing what made it successful in the first place – producing specialised pieces of equipment. For example, the company has a wide range of ‘made to measure’ cranes, including compact and long-boom machines, as well as those specified for recycling, military and marine applications. It is also one of the few companies specialising in railroad excavators. Recently, Atlas added the 140W ‘Big Foot’ wheeled excavator to its product range, which can operate in areas normally the preserve of tracked machines. A combination of powerful axles and a limited slip differential of 35%, along with gigantic tyres, give Big Foot the highest ground clearance and lowest ground contact pressure on the market. As you would expect from a specialist machines specialist, Atlas has injected more than one interesting aspect to the new machine, including a specially designed undercarriage, allowing it to lift 1.3 tonnes at a reach of 11 m, without the need for stabilisers. And even with such gigantic wheels, the Big Foot is road legal and can rattle along at up to 36 km/h. The company’s niche appeal is likely to keep it relatively small, but that suits Filipov – and his ‘benevolent dictatorship’ style of management. Brahim Stitou describes the turnaround of Atlas’ fortunes – from losing US$ 2 million a month, to a growing business with revenues of US$ 200 million a month (with little more than half the staff) – as “Not bad.” He has clearly learned a great deal from Filipov, who similarly says, “I’m happy, but I’m not satisfied. I’m never satisfied.” iC

ENGINES More power, less effort

The final decision made on EU Stage V emissions standards gives further focus to today’s engine manufacturers. Joe Malone finds out which companies are innovating for future changes. John Deere’s new engine has variable speed ratings and is equipped with an integrated emissions control system

More power, less effort here is one focus point for all engine manufacturers across the world, which is to ensure they can produce and sell engines that meet the latest standard emissions regulations, whatever market they sell into. China has this year moved to an EU Stage IIIA/Tier 3 Final equivalent, while, in 2019, new emissions standards are set to come into force in Europe, in the shape of Stage V, superseding the current Stage IV standards. With three years to go until these standards become active, the European Parliament has announced it has adopted a final agreement on regulations which tighten emissions limits for particulate culate matter (PM) and nitrogen en oxides (NOx) for nonroad mobile machinery (NRMM), which relate to Stage V. A compromise agreement was approved by Memberr States’ representatives and nd the European Parliament’s ment’s Environment Committee in May. Beginning, however, with US Tier 4 Final emissions standards, John ohn Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has launched the latest addition to its line-up up of Tier 4 Final industrial engines – thee PowerTech

T

PSL 4.5 l engine. The company’s new engine has variable speed ratings and is equipped with an integrated emissions control system consisting of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) SCR system. Darrin Treptow, manager, worldwide marketing for JDPS, said, “We continue to enhance our Tier 4 Final engine line-up. With the introduction of the PowerTech PSL 4.5 l engine, we’re offering a common technology solution across our entire 4.5 l power range from 63 to 129 kW. “The PowerTech PSL 4.5L delivers more power density and low-speed torque, while leveraging combustion improved low spe optimisation that eeliminates the need for a DPF.” The ccompany says it designed the integrated emissions control system for its PowerTech PSL em aand PWL 4.5 l engine platforms to balance performance and operating requirements. JDPS adds that the PowerTech PWL and PSL 4.5 l engines complement the Tier 4 Final PSS 4.5 l engine equipped with a DPF, providing OEMs with greater application flexibility. The company’s new launch, without a DPF, is available with power ratings from D 93 to 129 kW. The existing PowerTech PWL 4.5 l engine, with DOC/SCR aftertreatment, delivers delive an impressive 63 to 104 kW.

Yanmar has considered all emissions standards across all global markets with its new turbocharged engine

also includes single-side servicing ervicing which improves ease of maintenance tenance and lowers overall owner operating perating costs. Yanmar has considered all emissions standards across all global markets with its three new turbocharged ocharged engines, which join its existing ing TNV family of common rail engines gines and are EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage IIIB IIB and FOEN (Switzerland) certified. Thesee new 1.6, 2.1 and 3.1 l engines will, however, meet Stage V emissions standards, d d once they come into force in 2019. Yanmar says the engines have already proved successful for construction equipment manufacturers, especially for excavator and wheeled loader applications, because of their lower fuel consumption, higher power density and a DPF which requires very little maintenance. The three engines feature Bosch and Denso common rail direct fuel injection systems, full authority electronics and offer rated powers ranging from 33.3 to 88.4 kW. With the addition of the turbocharged-aftercooled engines, the TNV CR engine range now consists of nine models. Gert Maris, senior area manager, industrial power train department, Yanmar Europe, said, “This is a major addition to the TNV range offering a host of benefits to equipment makers, not least enhanced fuel efficiency and compactness, requiring less space for installation than equivalent engines with the same output.”

Stage V-ready Meanwhile, moving on to EU Stage V-ready engines, Deutz has launched its new range this year, including a new 3-cylinder diesel engine for the lower power output range, two new gas engines, a new 4-cylinder diesel engine and an EU Stage V engine range. The company’s new 3-cylinder diesel engine is a variant on its TCD 2.9 4-cylinder engine. Its engine size is 2.2 l, generating 22 to 56 kW, and is said to be ideal for low-load applications in the material handling and compact construction equipment field. Deutz’s gas engines are a variant on its new TCD 2.2 l engine, and are said to be suitable for forklift trucks employed inside buildings because, when used as a fuel, liquefied petroleum gas produces considerably fewer emissions. The gas variants will generate 26 to 54 kW and represent a first in the Deutz product range, which otherwise includes only diesel powered engines. With the aid of a three-way catalytic converter and without the need for a sophisticated

Cummins has recently launched its new F3.8, B4.5, B6.7 and L9 engines, which are designed to meet Stage V emissions regulations.

World first Dynaset provides HPTO with bolt-on belt drive ynaset says it is the world’s first manufacturer to provide a hydraulic power take-off (HPTO) with a bolt-on belt drive for transverse mounted engines. The company released its HPTO earlier this year. The new HPTO takes power out from a crankshaft to a hydraulic pump with the bolt-on belt drive. The patented structure of the bolt-on belt drive does not cause any traction to a vehicle’s crankshaft, providing safe usage and longer lifetime for an engine. The company says it has provided PTO solutions for longitude mounted engines for decades. Its compact structure and the bolt-on assembly reduces installation workload and saves time compared to traditional PTO solutions. When engine compartments allow, The HPTO can be fitted on any vehicle with a transverse mounted engine. The HPTO has a variable hydraulic pump and is able to use powerful hydraulic equipment while driving. For example, says Dynaset, the hydraulic generator can produce electricity for refrigerated transport equipment, as well as electric tools. Using Dynaset’s technology, any vehicle can use hydraulic equipment to enhance its own engine power to produce electricity, welding current, high pressure water and compressed air. The vehicle’s fuel consumption remains the same when the hydraulic equipment is not running. The company’s hydraulic equipment is compact, which ensures easy installation on all vehicles and saves space for other users. The output power of the HPTO is 30 kW with a hydraulic flow of 85 l per minute.

said, “With the TCD 5.0 engine, we want to fill the gap in the 100 to 150 kW power output range. At the same time, we are developing a new technological platform with outstanding product features.” The philosophy behind the new engine is to produce more power from a smaller cubic capacity. It allows larger engines to be replaced, or offers an increase in output from an engine of the same original size. In addition, the engine runs more efficiently and, in conjunction with its lower weight, has more economical fuel consumption. Cummins has recently launched its new F3.8, B4.5, B6.7 and L9 engines, which are designed to meet Stage V emissions regulations. The new engines range from 75 to 321kW, and claim major increases in power and torque by removing the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, and using Cummins’ single module aftertreatment technology. Chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger inebarger said, “Cummins is raising the engine performance bar ar higher with our EGRfree approach for Stage V, and that leadership will continue to drive the equipment ment industry forward to meet the regulations in 2019 with simpler machine integration. He added, “The engines we unveiled have been designed from the outset to reduce Stage V cost of ownership to levels equivalent quivalent to that of engines meeting emissionss regulations as far back as ten years ago. “This achievement is the result of product development inspired more than han ever by the needs of our customers, rather ather than by just meeting emissions regulations, tions, however stringent they may be.” Compared to Cummins’ Stage ge IV and Tier 4 Final engines, power output for the new w 3.8 to 9 l engines for Stage V have increased by over 10% on n average. Msheireb Metro Station, Doha, Qatar The metro station is located at a depth of 40 m and has 4 main levels. In order to effectively realize the 200 m long and 180 m wide major interchange with its massive component dimensions within the given construction period, PERI planned and delivered the formwork and scaffolding systems. The complex structural geometry, with up to 3 m thick reinforced concrete slabs and wall thicknesses reaching 2 m, required a customized implementation concept. Within a very short space of time, 10,000 m² of wall and column formwork as well as 150,000 m³ of shoring were delivered to the construction site.

FALSEWORK AND FORMWORK Expansive engineering

RMD Kwikform developed a hanging system for the formwork on the Åndalsnes quay extension

Jaso Tower Cranes is using up to 14 cranes for the project, some with capacities of 24 and 36 tonnes

As large-scale construction projects become more complex, so the engineering of formwork has developed to be more adaptable. Mike Hayes reports.

Expansive engineering etting a construction project off the ground often requires not only the falsework and formwork hardware, but also the expertise of the engineering team behind it, to offer contractors solutions to any ground-up problems. A case in point comes from UK-based RMD Kwikform, who were employed to help with a watery problem in Norway. With an increasing number of large cruise ships visiting the country, it was decided that an extension to the existing quay in the Åndalsnes region was required. The main contractor on the project, Kristiseter AS, elected to connect the extension to the existing structure by means of a 60 m long, 4 m wide footbridge. Kristiseter turned to UK-based formwork company RMD Kwikform and Norwegian-based Teknikk for a solution to the problem of connecting the new and existing structures. The new quay is a 17 m by 17 m in situ concrete structure, situated on eight steel piles, measuring 1.2 m in diameter, and secured to the fjord bedrock

G

70 m below water level. The quay is being cast in two stages, commencing with the concrete beams, and followed by the concrete deck. One of the challenges RMD Kwikform’s engineering team faced was to provide a soffit support for approximately 780 tonnes of concrete, consisting of 1.2 m deep concrete beams, with a 0.7 m deep concrete slab above. However, due to the location of the concrete beams, situated at only 0.7 m above the water level, the temporary works could only be supported by the eight tubular steel piles, which formed the foundations for the entire quay. In collaboration with Teknikk, RMD Kwikform’s UK engineering team produced a number of concept designs before a hanging system for the formwork was agreed. The method uses a suspended soffit

system with all of the core structural support above the quay. Morten Hernes, project manager at Teknikk, said, “Kristiseter AS cast eight steel support posts into the top of each tubular steel pile. Each of these posts protrudes above the top of the core quay slab. Steel header beams then span between adjacent support posts; providing four additional support points at each corner of the quay. “Two groups of 22 m long RANA beams span between the top of the header beams, and provide the support for five R700 truss modules, which in turn are 19 m long and span at 90 degrees to the RANA beams. There are also wedge jacks situated between each RANA beam and R700 truss; this ensure the load can be easily released, without the need to undo all of the hangar ties.”

On the Venda Nova III power station project, Ulma had to mobilise more than 2,000 tonnes of material

tonnes, the bridge has eight hollow central piers, plus a further 14 piers, with a steel-reinforced concrete composite decking and steel pylons. Pilosio engineers worked with Maeg Costruzioni to define the optimal construction technique, and Pilosio provided diverse systems, combining standard modules with particular formworks, tailored to meet the specific requirements of the site. Pilosio chose its standard P300 formwork system for the two abutments and foundation plinths, and used the same system for the outer part of the four central shaped pillars, which have a constant diameter. For the four tapering central piers, a special formwork was produced and combined with the P300. For the inside of these eight shafts, the P300 formworks were connected to a steel quick dismantling system. The simple system can be retrieved with a single crane lift; once pulled by the crane hook, the four stripping conical corners come off and the diameter of the formwork narrows allowing all the formwork to be lifted as a whole. As well as the shaped piers, Pilosio’s formwork was also utilised

Ulma adapted standard formwork systems for the varying tunnel diameters of Venda Nova III power station

Labour-saving formwork Wall formwork system offers one and two-sided tying resented at this year’s Bauma exhibition in Munich, the new Mammut XT wall formwork from Meva allows the XT tie hole to be set to one of three tying methods. The company says the XT tie rod and articulated flange nut form a single part, reducing the number of parts required for tying by 50%. Ultimately, says Meva, there being no difference between the two sides of the formwork setup, no extra effort is required in the preparation or handling of jobs. At the same time, Mammut XT is based on the heavy-duty Mammut 350 system, and boasts the same 11 kN/m2 load capacity.

P

The Mammot XT tie hole is built into the panel frame

Meva’s Mammut XT formwork offers three tying methods in one system

on the hollow circular piers and piercups. Following Pilosio’s contribution to the project, the Maeg site manager said, “Pilosio came to our attention through our site technicians who had previously worked at other sites with Pilosio equipment and had had positive and successful experiences.”

Climbing the walls The importance of engineering and concept design in formwork may never have been more strenuously put to the test than during the expansion of the Panama Canal. One can only imagine the mixture of trepidation and excitement at the headquarters of Peri, when the company was asked to plan and deliver formwork and scaffolding systems that would ultimately fill around 1,100 containers, before being shipped to Panama. For the biggest job in the company’s 47-year history, Peri ensured it had a multinational team of engineers on hand to provide support, ensuring the optimal coordination of material to match project requirements at all times. An essential element of the formwork solution on the project was Peri’s newly-developed SCS climbing system. Developed for single-sided applications, such as the construction of dams, locks and tunnels, the system has a modular concept, complete with multi-piece brackets, easily adapted to match projectspecific requirements and geometries. The high load-bearing capacity of the brackets allows for wide climbing units, meaning fewer anchor points and a reduction in material requirements and workload. For the canal expansion, SCS 250 system, with wide working platforms was used. Mounted on a carriage, the retractable formwork’s brackets were combined with the Vario GT 24 girder wall formwork A big advantage for the team was that, with the SCS system, the same formwork could be used for the first casting segment, as well as subsequent standard cycles, saving time and reducing costs. In Portugal, Spanish formwork specialist Ulma was brought in to work on the746 MW Venda Nova III hydroelectric power station. To construct such a huge power plant, Ulma had to mobilise more than 2,000 tonnes of material, for which distribution

Art and architecture On a very different scale – and proving that formwork can be a truly creative tool – Doka utilised its Framax Xlife and Dokaflex systems to transform the monolithic Palác Národní (or National Palace) building in the heart of Prague. Reliefs of hands, shoes, ropes, fabrics, tools and even entire trees – all to a precise specification – were set into the building’s ceilings and walls, from the basement levels, up to the top floor. As well as its standard formwork, Doka used made-to-measure special formwork from its pre-assembly service to tackle the intricate work. In all, almost 31,000 m2 of Doka formwork was put into service. In order to produce a specific pattern in the finished concrete, in certain places the Doka formwork sheeting is removed and replaced with OSB, cement excelsior boards or planed boards. The imprints are created by fixing actual objects as positives to the face of the formwork sheeting. The prepared formwork is sprayed with release agent and the objects are removed as soon as the formwork has been stripped. The ceilings of the Palác národní feature unique castings in relief. The fast, hand-set Dokaflex system is ideal for these jobsite parameters. The beams of the Dokaflex system telescope, so the formwork can be fitted neatly to columns and walls.

The free choice of sheeting makes this system perfect for widely differing sets of requirements. Working on another monolithic reinforced concrete structure is German formwork company Paschal, who put their climbing systems to use on a fourstar plus hotel in Lörrach, southwest Germany. On site visits, the Paschal technicians noted that almost all of the 75 m x 49 m construction site was occupied by buildings, with shell dimensions of 68 m x 48 m. Consequently, the formwork units of the Paschal climbing system had to be specially designed for the area, as well as to ensure they could be lifted from one level to the next with the smallest number of crane lifts – to a maximum height of 63 m. The build was not without further challenges. For example, the Paschal engineers had to ensure the anchoring system for the climbing platforms did not collide with the attachment points of the façade construction. To do this, they made anchoring points for the climbing brackets in the reinforced concrete slab level without exception, and made the static calculations for them. PHOTO: DOKA GMBH

centres close to the site had to be established. The project required formwork solutions inside 9 km of subterranean galleries, so Ulma adapted standard systems for the varying geometries, with tunnel diameters ranging from 8 to 20 m. To place the rebar and clad the tunnel walls, around 300 tonnes of Brio scaffolding, which also served as gantry falsework, was installed on an MK carriage, allowing it freedom of movement along the length of the tunnels. For the walls of the plant’s mechanical systems, the tunnel sidewalls, and the lateral beam faces, ORMA modular formwork was used, while ATR self-climbing system was used to build the 358 m-high surge tanks.

Engineering expertise

For the barrel-shaped section of the Henninger Turm, a cantilevered platform was formed at a height of 100 m PHOTO: PERI GMBH

Also in Germany, Peri is working on Henninger Turm, a residential tower being built on the site of the iconic grain silo in Frankfurt. With a height of around 140 m, the new Henninger Turm is one of the tallest residential towers in Germany, with a total of 210 apartments. In close coordination with the project team of construction firm Ed Züblin AG, Peri developed a workflow concept with formwork, scaffolding and related services. In addition to technical and scheduling feasibility, great emphasis was placed on corresponding cost efficiency. Peri engineers supported the rapid construction progress with formwork, scaffolding and service expertise. At 40 m-high, the tower incorporated a huge barrel-like construction, positioned above the 30th floor, with an external diameter of around 25 m. For the structural work of this very distinctive circular section, a working and scaffolding platform with a cantilever of up to 8 m was formed at a height of 100 m, on the basis of modular, rentable standard system components. The PERI concept took into consideration, on the one hand, the required load distribution in the core and external walls for all construction stages and, on the other, provided the assembly and dismantling concept, ensuring maximum safety as a high proportion of the assembly work was carried out on the ground. To ensure efficient and cost-effective use of materials, Peri opted for 3D planning with PERI CAD software, and made use of the project support provided on the jobsite by a project coordinator and the availability of an experienced supervisor for the formwork assembly. As these examples show, the benefits of having not only high-quality formwork and falsework on a project, but also high-quality engineering expertise, cannot be overstated. An integrated approach to the complex issues involved – including sharing up-to-date information on the formwork construction process and discussing necessary adaptations with colleagues – can have a positive impact on cost, construction time, safety and the quality produced at the end of a project. iC

SURVEYING Constructing in new dimensions

Constructing in new dimensions Companies are revelling in the launch of new The Topcon Elite Survey Suite features four integrated solutions

technology, which is enabling accuracy never achieved before. Joe Malone reports. ameras in the sky have added a whole new dimension to surveying techniques on construction sites, and the range of equipment available is growing fast. There are various names for these drones – remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) – but they all do a similar job, though there is new technology at ground level, too. Topcon Positioning Group, for one, has launched a new suite which features four integrated solutions – three hardware products which it says were “fused” by a single software solution – designed to provide professionals with a powerful and complete survey system. The Topcon Elite Survey Suite – which includes the new GT series of robotic total stations, HiPer HR hybrid GNSS receiver, FC-5000 field computer and MAGNET 4.0 software system – provides Topcon’s geo-positioning products and technology in one system. Jason Hallett, Topcon vice president of global product management, said, “The individual products of the Elite Survey Suite were designed from the ground up to work together seamlessly through one software solution – a first of its kind in our industry – and one representing the fastest robotic motor total station technology in the market, the smallest and lightest GNSS rover in the industry, the latest advances in field computing and the pinnacle of software capabilities.” The Topcon ultrasonic direct drive motors available within the

new GT series total station have a turning speed of up to 180° per second. “It’s the fastest robot on the market,” said Hallett. “The advanced UltraTrac Technology engine can efficiently and dramatically increase power for prism tracking. “The total station is 30% smaller and 30% lighter, yet still provides the highest levels of accuracy and performance. Fastest, smallest, lightest – that was our goal in building the latest GT series.”

Level playing field Leica’s DS2000 utility detection radar identifies threats, including plastic and all non-conductive pipes and fibre optics

Built on the foundation of the HiPer series of receivers, the new HiPer HR claims to be the world’s smallest and lightest GNSS receiver. “It is capable of tracking all constellations, all satellites and all signals – available today and tomorrow,” said Hallett. He said that the GNSS technology integrated in the HiPer HR featured Topcon Integrated Levelling Technology (TILT) functionality.

“TILT uses a 6-axis IMU (inertial measurement unit) and a 3-axis digital compass that together offer an advanced HiPer HR receiver with a 9-axis MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) to correct for mis-levelled measurements.” He said this allowed users to take field measurements quickly and confidently, even in scenarios where getting the receiver into an exact vertical setup was difficult or not possible. The receiver comes with five data communication options and an IP67 waterproof rating. “The third hardware solution in the suite is the FC-5000 field computer with two built-in cameras and a 7in (1.78mm) sunlight-readable display,” said Hallett. “This advanced device provides operators the processing power and wireless connectivity options expected for the modern job site – complete with a touch screen that is user-friendly even in the most challenging of environments.” Meanwhile, Trimble has launched its new TDC100 handheld data collector, which it says is an entry-level GNSS device designed for a variety of GIS applications. The power of the tool is that it combines smartphone and the ability to collect data in harsh environments in a single mobile device. The TDC100 can run commercially available or in-house developed applications on an IP-67 platform with a sunlight readable display and user replaceable batteries. The built-in GNSS receiver also claims real-time accuracy. Meanwhile, at Leica Geosystems, its construction tools portfolio is divided into several segments. In the category of detection, it has ground cable locators, utility detection radar and Smartready, and GPS products. Lasers have been available to the surveyor since the 1970s. the difference between now and then, however, is that Leica has construction lasers with laser receivers, interior lasers, grade lasers and machine receivers, and pipe lasers. It also has optical and digital levels, like the Leica LS15 digital level – launched earlier this year – which offers experienced measuring professionals reliable accuracy with ease while measuring levelling projects for buildings, roads, railways and bridges. Katherine Broder, vice president of the Leica Geosystems tools division, said that Leica was transforming the construction tools part of its business. She said that today, hardware still dominates this segment, with service and software a relatively small part. In the future, Leica plans to see these high-tech elements playing a much bigger role. Broder said, “The iPhone app generation is asking for more information, so there is a big change coming, from 95% hardware now to just over 50% in the future.” She added, “There are three big areas – software and service, distribution and the system offering. It’s a fundamental change in our mindset.”

SURVEYING Constructing in new dimensions

Part of Leica’s plan to achieve this is a special focus on rental, with full laser use in the rental market leading to less downtime. Detection is also a key part of the strategy. Tied up in this is monitoring, surveying, machine control hit prevention and GIS (geographic information system) mapping. In June, Leica Geosystems announced the establishment of a georadar portfolio with three releases to provide applications in utility mapping, asset detection and mapping, and monitoring. Following parent company Hexagon’s acquisition of the GeoRadar Division of Ingegneria dei Sistemi (IDS), a private firm with core expertise in radar-based systems, Leica Geosystems has been able to create a radar portfolio which it said would increase safety, accurately locate and map underground assets on various work sites, and monitor risk-prone environments. The company says that for any construction or excavation site, understanding the risks that lay beneath the surface is key to the success of the project. The Leica DS2000 utility detection radar identifies all potential threats, including plastic and all non-conductive pipes and fibre optics, increasing safety by lowering the risk of accidently hitting underground assets. Leica claims that it is collecting twice the information in half the passes, with data from dual-frequency antennae that locate deep and shallow targets at the same time. With or without GPS, utility location can be accomplished onsite with no post processing needed, says Leica. The company is also adding new radar technology to its Leica GeoMoS monitoring software for an even clearer indication of project stability. By combining GeoMoS with IDS Guardian software, the gaps between prisms on monitoring projects of landslides, mines or infrastructure are now also detected for fast movements.

photogrammetry products – photogrammetry is the science of taking measurements from photographs, producing a map, drawing or 3D model. The company has the PIX4Dmapper desktop software line, and the Pix4Dcapture flight planning app. Norton said that the Pix4Dcapture android and iOS application fitted his criteria as it “generates the ideal flight plan for optimally captured images”. An expert drone pilot is not required as the mobile app handles both the drone flight and image capture. These images are transmitted automatically to Pix4Dcloud for a preview in the browser. Then the file and images can be downloaded for full processing in Pix4Dmapper. The software can export point cloud formats which are compatible with industry standard CAD and BIM software such as AutoCAD and Revit. At Pix4D, the images used to create the overall site views, which can be 3D, can be taken from anywhere, according to Norton. The company has the software to join up an assortment of different pictures from a mixture of sources into one final image. “The clever bit,” said Norton, “is putting together all the pictures and making sense of it.” He described BIM as being about work being achieved in a timely fashion, in a cost effective way, and as quickly as possible – but he said there was a need to verify the schedule, and these schedules had to be adhered to, or whole project could be affected. He said the Pix4D solution enabled easy checks to see if project was performing correctly against defined schedules, and if any correction needs to be made. Norton pointed out that 15% of the cost of a typical construction site project was allocated for mistakes, so the key was finding errors early. This means efficient analysis and providing a daily update. In one recent large construction project in Lausanne, Switzerland, multiple contractors were involved. Images collected by drone, which Norton said meant no interference with site operations, and 2D and 3D data were created. Orthomosaics – geometrically-corrected aerial photographs – provide a clear aerial view of the site for communicating information to contractors. The data was used to check the asbuilt status of the site, looking for any errors that might result in rework costs. Data was collected regularly to check the build progress and ensure the project was on schedule. iC

Picture perfect At Swiss-based Pix4D, Julian Norton, business development manager, construction division, said that any process to create the necessary pictures must be as simple, automated, repeatable and as de-skilled as possible. Pix4D produces drone-based mapping software. It is a developer of
