Corvallis Senior looks back on 4 great years MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
CORVALLIS - Annie Sangster, Corvallis High School senior class copresident, will have one last official duty as a class officer - she will give the opening speech at graduation on June 7. Expectations are high. “Annie Sangster is a student who has the ability to brighten a room by her presence,” said CHS academic dean Cammie Knapp. “She is a team player, has a positive outlook, and is a natural leader among her peers. She represents Corvallis High School as an overall well-rounded student who has participated in athletics, extracurricular activities, all while involved in her local religious organization.” Sangster reminisced about her career in high school. “I loved Mrs. Pliley’s class [freshman English],” Sangster said. “We did sports for the Renaissance portion and re-created an old-fashioned sport similar to volleyball. “My sophomore year, my partner and I were debate class champions and we had to go up against Mr. McConnaha. We thought he was going to run a Zombie plan and we researched that topic, but he ran something else. We were robbed. “I loved orchestra our class did well at the District Festival Music Festival,” she said. “I’ve never been good at cello until that year. “My junior year, I got All-State for soccer. “For my living biography, my partner and I made it to the finals and we were Laurel and Hardy, two comedians,” she remembered. “I have kind of a funny story to tell. Mr. Loran, my history teacher, was concerned for my love live – which I have none. He made a deal that if I went to prom he would do an Irish jig at the talent show. I did and he did. It

was great.” As a senior, Sangster’s ecology class created a video on recycling that was distributed to schools around the state and presented at the Capitol,. Sangster said, “I’m in the video and helped our community in a small way that turned in to a big thing.” She has been active in sports, particularly soccer and tennis. She and her partner took first place at divisional tennis and are going to the state competition this weekend. “Annie has a great sense of humor and is an outstanding student leader; she has had a positive influence on the school year,” said Doug McConnaha, Corvallis High teacher and Student Council adviser. “I really enjoyed the teachers here,” she said. “Mrs. Knapp is one of my favorites, I managed to keep good grades. I was in Interact and the National Honor Society. High school was good - it will be bittersweet to leave. I’ll be sad to leave the school.” “One good thing about attending Corvallis is that the teachers and students recognize and are supportive of my beliefs and I can show my faith without being people being rude about it,” said Sangster. It was in her sophomore year when students research career options that Sangster discovered her career – creating a summer camp for troubled youth. Sangster is planning on studying Recreational Management at Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho, then Utah State University in Logan, Utah.
Good luck to all the graduates

Sole male Darby senior is a hardworking role model MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
DARBY - The sole senior boy at Darby High School is described as “all heart.” Kurt Kohn, the counselor for Darby Schools, elaborates on the character of William Westfall. “The catch phrase we came up with for Will is ‘all heart,’ ” said Kohn. “Whether it’s in the classroom or the football field or his jobs after school or working with his family, he doesn’t complain, he’s always positive and he brings people up. He’s as genuine as they come.” Westfall has attended Darby schools for 14 years - preschool through grade 12. “People kind of think ‘it’s only Darby’ and nobody ever wants to come here, but it is actually better to be in a small school because you have more one-on-one time with the teachers,” said Westfall. “The teachers care more than at a bigger school. We have a better bond with the teachers. Our whole class is pretty much friends - and friends with everybody.” Not only is Darby a Class C school, Kohn said this is the smallest group of students to graduate from Darby. “This class is a phenomenon,” said Kohn. “This is the smallest group we’ve ever had. Sometimes it fluctuated from six to eight kids, but it has been the small class ever since their kindergarten year. We’re probably the only school in the valley that can say we have 100 percent of our kids going on to higher education.” “Will is the only male in the entire class, creating an unusual situation,” said Kohn. “Picture this: Here’s the homecoming king, the parade route is

lined with people cheering them on and all these cars going by with these beautifully dressed girls and there’s the king pushing his vehicle and a bunch of the crowd joined in and helped push his car off the road.” “Being the only guy in the senior class, I kind of knew I was going to get the king position,” said Westfall with a smile. “I borrowed my grandpa’s car to be in the parade and got almost done and then it stalled out. During the halftime, I escorted all the queen candidates out from their cars - going back and getting another one, individually.” Westfall played football and basketball in school and said his favorite class is shop. “I just like using my hands and working with them. I like welding. I’m going to college for mechanics at Miles City Community College.” At the college visit in November, Westfall won tuition for a year – he will be attending his first year for free and study automotive technology, a two-year program. “By the time I get out, I’ll have an Associate’s Degree and be ASE certified which is the top, so I’ll be able to work any where,” he said. Westfall has carried the weight of his family on his shoulders, often being the father figure. “My parents got divorced a couple of years ago. It’s just been me, my mom (who is disabled) and my two younger brothers - my older sister moved out. I just keep an eye on them and do a bit of the disciplining to make sure they don’t get out of line,” he explained. “My brother has epilepsy – special needs – so I help out with that. He’s 15. If he has a seizure, they want me in the room when he comes out of it. He’s used to me being there. I just make sure he doesn’t fall over, help him walk, stuff like that.” Westfall is a hard worker. “I work two jobs every other day,” he said. “I do general farm work, digging ditches, burning - whatever they need me to do.” “William has a great sense of right and wrong,” said Kohn. “If he sees somebody mistreating someone, littering, defacing school property or whatever, he addresses them in a kind manner and he expects it to be corrected. We appreciate role models like Will.”

Florence senior plans to pursue art MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
FLORENCE - With a passion for art and an appreciation for his education, Wyatt Christopherson is ready for graduation. “I’ve always had a thing for art. It is something I enjoy doing, and hopefully I can find a career path in that,” said Christopherson. “Art is my passion, especially painting in all mediums. Watercolor and acrylic are probably my favorite.” Christopherson said his favorite event was attending Montana Art Interscholastic – a statewide high school art club workshop. “Art has always been my extracurricular activity,” he said. “Our art club goes every year to Montana Art Interscholastic - it is at a different school each year - this year at Glacier High School and Flathead Valley Community College. Workshops are taught by teachers and artists. So it is nice to learn from artists with careers. There are group activities and a dance that make it really fun. “My art teacher is Amy York. She taught me so much and is always willing to listen.” “Wyatt Christopherson is the kind of student you wish you had more of,” said Amy York, art education teacher. “He is thoughtful, kind, unique and creative. He works hard and has tremendous talent. I am super excited to watch his skill and artistic voice grow as he continues through art school and beyond.” Christopherson said enjoyed his classes at Florence-Carlton. “My favorite classes were definitely art and government,” he said. “The teachers for those classes are fantastic. In government, the teacher [Karen Branzell], makes it so it doesn’t feel like a class. I don’t know how she does it, but the information really sinks in. It prepares us for the future. We are prepared for life.”
Christopherson has attended FlorenceCarlton schools all 13 years of his education. “I’ve been here since kindergarten, so there is definitely a sense of community,” he said. “I’ve grown up here and know everyone. Having that personal connection with teachers is really beneficial. They have more time to indulge in time with you. I think it is beneficial. You can go in any time for extra help. It is great for your grades to get extra homework help and feel comfortable doing it. Teachers help if you need guidance or assistance. “There is no isolation in school - teachers help with that.” Christopherson enjoys having Missoula and all the activities of a bigger community close enough to enjoy. “It’s nice living close to Missoula – we are a small town and having a bigger city near is nice,” he said. Christopherson said he appreciates the school and Florence. “I’ve had a good experience here,” he said. “I have really supportive parents. The school works hard to help kids if they have unsupportive parents. I appreciate that too.” He said students do feel the conflicts that take place at the school board level. “There’s a lot of drama in the school board – and personal vendettas. I stay out of it – it just causes problems.” Christopherson said he is ready to graduate but will miss his classmates and friends. “Right now it is hard – I have close friends and I hate to see them go,” he said. “For the most part, it’s going to be OK. I’m moving far away. I’m going to Denver to the Rocky Mountain School of Art and Design.”

Pursuing a career in law enforcement and taking advantage of every opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in this field, Devyn Hafer has his life on track. Hafer has taken three semesters of internship through Hamilton High School with Mike Montgomery, a private attorney, as well as the Ravalli County Sheriff’s Office and the Hamilton City Police. “I’ve always been interested in law enforcement,” said Hafer. “I did an internship with an attorney to get the courtroom experience and see what an attorney looks at when in court – looking at the criminal. I know what a defense attorney looks for, and I’ll be able to do a better job and make sure there are no loopholes and that the procedures are done correctly.” In his next two internships, he compared the sheriff and police offices. “I got a good perspective and it helped me make the decision. I would definitely want to be a sheriff. They get a lot of different kinds of calls and cover a bigger area. If I were a police officer, I would need to be in a really big city,” he said. Hafer went to Cambodia for a monthlong cultural exchange trip with the American Youth Leadership Program - funded by the Department of State and coordinated through the Mansfield Center at the University of Montana. “I’d never been on an airplane, it was my first time out of the country, my first time to swim in the ocean – it was an amazing experience,” he said. “When I returned, I created a service project called the Live Simpler Campaign. One of the things that hit me hard was the streets of Cambodia are covered with garbage – there is no waste infrastructure there. People lived next to the land fill. Literally, Cambodia is one of the poorest countries of the world and with me never being out of Montana before I didn’t know

what poverty was until I saw it.” Hafer has enlisted with the Montana National Guard and will attend the University of Montana, where he plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminology with a double major in Spanish and a minor in military science. He plans to go into the ROTC program and become an officer upon graduating. “Technically, I didn’t have to join the Guard, but as an officer I think it is important to know what it’s like,” he said. He does plan to eventually get his master’s degree and plans a great career in law enforcement. “I think a cool job would be to work for the Diplomatic Security Agency. It is literally the same as the Secret Service but at embassies across the world. They serve as security advisers to local police and embassies. They have interaction with locals to help them be safer and enforce their laws.” Hafer maintains excellent grades and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is a Bitterroot Valley native with a great work ethic. “I lived here my whole life,” he said. “I was student body president for my freshman year. But then I started working on a ranch so didn’t have a lot of time. I’d rather work than do extra curricular activities.” “I’m graduating soon and going to basic training. I’ve worked at Bradley O’s 30 hours a week or more for the past three years. I do school and I’m busy with military stuff and work. “I’ve always had this ultimate goal in mind. I know what I want to be and know what I need to do to get there,” said Hafer. HHS Principal Dan Kimzy praised Hafer. “Devyn is not just a great student, but he’s a great young man with a strong commitment to making positive changes in the world, as is evident by his trip to Cambodia and his service in the Montana Army National Guard,” said Kimzey. “He is a terrific young Montana leader who will go on to do great things and we’re all very proud of him at Hamilton High School.”

Stevensville senior Princeton bound
MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
STEVENSVILLE - Michael Tummarello has had quite the successful high school career - overcoming medical problems to become a National Merit Scholar and he is Princeton bound. “To become a National Merit Scholar, I took the PSAT test the beginning of my junior year and I got a 226 and everyone said that was pretty high and I qualified as a semi-finalist,” said Tummarello. “For the students that score high, then you have to take the SAT – to confirm my abilities. I took it and there’s also an application process and a couple months later I found out I was a National Merit Scholar and won $2,500.” He said he would use that funding, as he has been accepted to study at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J. “I’m going to study computer science at Princeton. It’s an all-around a really good school. It has an awesome undergraduate focus. Its computer science program is ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Everything you do there will be top notch,” he said. “I met with a few professors at the Princeton Preview that they flew me out for. It is a cool atmosphere and it is small. I met several of their faculty in the computer science department and sat in on several lectures. They are very bright, kind and funny. It was a nice balance – they knew their subject well, but also they were outgoing, welcoming. “It is pretty pricey. They are giving me a very generous aid package, and I’ll be paying for the rest in scholarships and money I work for.” Tummarello participated in the extracurricular activities of tennis, National

Honor Society, Key Club, Student Council, band (he played percussion in pep band and concerts) and speech. At this year’s State Class A speech tournament, Tummarello placed second in two events – Memorized Public Address and Extemporaneous speaking. He had been divisional champion in both events at the divisional qualifying meet. “A highlight of high school was being the speech team captain this year and seeing the team doing so well,” said Tummarello. “Taking third at state in speech with only eight teammates who qualified was amazing. In drama, taking second, after Corvallis, was a great way to end the senior year.” At the National Forensic League divisional qualifier Tummarello was a national qualifier in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. AP World History was Tummarello’s favorite class in high school. “AP World History with Mr. Miles was a great class that I took my sophomore year. It was interesting getting to watch the development of the world and see how countries interact and evolve over time. Plus, Mr. Miles was just a cool guy to hang around with.” Tummarello has been attending Stevensville schools since third grade. He began his high school career facing medical problems but those were resolved. “I have two sleep disorders and I was sleeping through all my classes and that was a bit of a challenge my freshman year,” said Tummarello. “We got that diagnosed and I got treatment.” “There are some really great teachers in Stevensville that helped keep me engaged, which is difficult sometimes,” he said.

Victor senior looks to a career in medicine MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
VICTOR - Keegan Ortiz bounced around from school to school, landed in Victor, and has set his sights on a career in medicine, specifically becoming a radiology technician. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. It’s a good way to help people and to help out the community,” said Ortiz. “I actually wanted to be an osteopathic physician, but I didn’t want to spend as long as it would take. So I looked into studying to be a radiology tech, through the Montana College – in Missoula.” Victor school counselor Cynthia Martin said she encouraged Ortiz in studying to be an X-ray technician because it is “a fast-going profession in the nation with the aging population.” “In three years, a student can be done and can be making more than their teachers,” said Martin. Ortiz said that he feels he has a good starting plan, but hopes to continue his education even further. “After I get the radiology tech, I may go back to school for further ed to get a good job and have more experience,” he said. “The reason I chose osteopathic physician is that they are a step up from an regular doctor and I was sick of going to the doctor and listening to them not knowing what was wrong or what to do. As an OP, I could do a thorough job and do the best that I can do.” Coming to Victor school just two years ago, Ortiz found the smaller school very different. ‘I like it a lot. It is different from a bigger school. In a bigger school with a couple thousand kids, you can see a bunch of people you didn’t see yesterday,” said Ortiz. “At this school, you know everyone. I know all the high school, not just the seniors.”

Ortiz said he has attended a variety of schools and that the smaller school helped him find a sense of place. “When I first came here, I didn’t know how small it was – that the elementary, middle and high schools are all together – that’s just different,” said Ortiz. “It’s a great school and staff; everyone is really friendly and welcoming. It’s a good place to keep yourself up and on a good track. Ethos [Victor’s morning school assembly] is cool. I like it. You get to hear what the week plans are, so you know what’s coming. “I like all my teachers at Victor. I’m taking anatomy and physiology, which is not hard. I find it interesting. I like it.” The extracurricular programs Ortiz chose to participate in are basketball and football. He played wide receiver, linebacker, safety and running back. Linebacker was his favorite. Ortiz has faced and overcome quite a few challenges. “The challenges of school are that I’ve moved around a lot and been through a couple of high schools,” he said. “Math was hard too.” Ortiz lives in Missoula and commutes to Victor, keeping an after-school job in Missoula. “I live in Missoula and commute to school. My mom and dad are not together. Dad lives in Victor, but I live with my mom in Missoula,” he said. “I work at Café Zydeco in Missoula; they do Cajun food. It’s really good. I cook, dish wash, prep foods, cashier. I work three to four days a week.” Principal Dan Johnston praised the growth he’s seen in Ortiz. “Keegan Ortiz is a success story and an example of how a small school setting can bring out one’s potential,” he said. “We are proud of Keegan and how he has been a positive addition to our student body. We all wish him the best of luck in his future.”
