is an international program that promotes and increases our children’s literacy by using the newspaper as a teaching tool. NIE is a unique way for schools, businesses and the local newspaper to work together in a partnership that benefits all of us - now and in the future. Through the use of daily news, editorial, features and even advertising, students at all grade levels can learn math and cost comparison skills, geography and meteorology, history and current events and how they shape our world, all while improving reading and comprehension. The NIE program helps motivate and teach students with a textbook as fresh as each day’s news.

Editorials McDonald’s Happier Meals I think McDonald’s should change the happy meal. McDonalds doesn’t have enough food choices. McDonalds should add tater tots, fish, shrimp and artichokes. McDonald’s should also add desserts besides milkshakes and ice cream. They could add a variety of cookies. Another reason why I think McDonald’s should change their happy meal is because they don’t make quality toys. McDonald’s should buy toys from a toy company. I think that if they got Nerf toys they could buy the toys from the Nerf Toy Company. Katie Gladden
4th Grade, Mr. Waldo, Corvallis Primary School Stronger Bodies I think people should exercise because you will stay healthy. If you exercise you get stronger, lose weight, and live longer. You will have a better healthier life and heart. Cash Trexler 4th Grade, Mr. Waldo, Corvallis Primary School
Care for Air I think that in the future there will be more polluted air than clean air. We use factories and power plants that use smokestacks that let bad chemicals in the air. We should use ways that don’t pollute the air like windmills and solar panels. If we don’t have clean air in the future we will only live for three minutes. Bullying Needs to Stop Bullying is a huge problem and teachers may think that kids who are bullied will report to them but that’s not always the case. Many victims are too shy or scared or they may have been threatened to not report the bully. Bullying is a subject that may be overlooked but is actually very serious. Bullying may make a kid want to quit school or sports or may even have suicidal thoughts. Bullying is a problem everywhere and many people want to help. Bullies may have family problems or are jealous so we need to help them too. Are you going to participate in helping bullying or just watch
it happen in front of your eyes? It’s your choice. Anna Seifert 7th Grade, Mr. Sparks, Hamilton Middle School Good Grades are Always Good Practice I think that Middle School grades do matter even though your college does not look at those grades. Middle school grades are important because it’s good practice to get good grades. Then in high school you will already know how important your grades are. When you apply for college they look at your high school grades. If you get good grades, you can

also get college scholarships. Good grades can get you to a lot of great places in your life. All grades matter. I know that there are many people who do not care about their grades but they should. I know that I care about my grades and I can expect to go to great places in life because of it. Also, teachers don’t look good if you get an F in their class. Editorials Parade Danger The Ravalli County Fair Parade may sound fun, but there are also many dangers to it. In the parade candy is handed out. If the people who go to the parade eat too much candy it could cause health problems. But, eating just a little of the candy will be fine. At the Ravalli County Fair Parade there is this big truck that dumps pounds of candy on little kid’s heads. This is very dangerous because if the kid happens to look up when the candy is being dumped, candy could very easily land in their eyes and give them a serious eye injury. One other reason why the parade is dangerous is the
parade floats on the road. When people throw candy to the kids from their float, sometimes they don’t throw it hard enough and the kids run into the road to get the candy. Kids can easily get run over by the floats. There are many dangers to the Ravalli County Fair Parade. Kaley Gordon 7th Grade, Mr. Sparks, Hamilton Middle School Trapped In 2012, over 2.7 million dollars was made from trapping in Montana alone. Most of that money was people’s only revenue. Some people think trapping is inhumane and dan-
gerous, but it is actually an important tool in conservation. Trapping is a vital way to help with wildlife management and can be done safely and ethically on public lands if rules are followed by the trappers. There are also out of state groups that want to take away trapping. By taking away trapping on public lands, people take away individual rights as well as an important tool in wildlife management. Trapping also keeps predator numbers under control, which benefits the whole ecosystem. Many people are big hunters, fisherman and trappers and it would be totally unreasonable to take away trapping on public

Editorials this asset from entering our city. This conundrum is simply about any large box store. The people against this idea are afraid it will hurt the smaller stores, will it really? People will still go to those shops if they want to grab a few things, or go on a quick grocery trip. Walmart is for the mass production and shopping. Take Missoula for example. When you arrive, the city isn’t one massive box store that has absorbed all the little businesses. Those are still there and doing just fine. Hamilton citizens are afraid of growth. However, that is what these small businesses need! A growing popula-
tion equals a growing economy. This includes everyone from real estate, hotels, and all types of businesses. This box-store is not limited to its own interests. Plus, this change to Hamilton can create jobs. “They need those types of jobs and so we need to be able to provide for them,” said Richard Moore to NBC Montana. When more people have jobs, a city thrives, and that’s what Hamilton could do. It’s convenient, it’s job-creating, it’s Walmart. So Hamilton, hop off your horse and buggy and start flourishing this town we absolutely love. Olivia Merth

It is pretty common to have a need for speed in our region. The bad thing is: Hamilton does not have a big enough dirt bike track for the training people need. Editorials Refugee or Terrorist A few days ago I read the article in the Ravalli Republic about the commissioners discussing Syrian refugees. I was astonished by how everyone responded to this issue. I would think that we would want to help people who are having their country blown up, but instead we are afraid of the refugees being terrorists, really? Hamilton is a very small town that is in need of more people. That is why we should accept about 100 Syrian refugees every year for awhile. I don’t see a problem with letting Syrian refugees into our country let alone Montana. We should want to be known as a country
that wants to help out with other countries. America should be a country full of different races and religions. Being a Muslim should not stop you from coming into Montana, and just because Muslims did the 9/11 attack does not mean we get to blame and fear all other people who are Muslims. I strongly believe that we as a state and a country should welcome Syrian refugees who are suffering into our community. I hope some people have changed their minds about Syrian refugees. Core classes required but no Arts? In all high schools around the world there are core classes that require all students to learn math, language, science, history and other classes. However, it is not and has never been mandatory for all students to take art classes. In fact, when schools have to do budget cuts, the arts are what suffer the most. Art classes aren’t viewed as important, but they provide a new way of thinking, which everyone should have. Art classes, such as band, choir, painting, and others are all creative. Not everyone has a creative mindset, but likewise, not everyone has a
scientific or mathematical mindset, yet everyone learns them. Taking art classes gives you the opportunity to learn differently, use your brain more, and build your creativity. When you have creativity, you can solve and see problems others can’t. Using your brain more often on a daily basis also has many health benefits. We should make art classes mandatory so that our next generation is better thinkers, more creative, more cultured and better problem solvers. Emily Walling Grade 12, Mrs. Taylor, Victor High School

Editorials Best Gun Salesman in the Nation President Barack Obama is the best gun salesman in this nation. With recent threats to take executive action on guns, people have been in a frenzy. One hundred million guns have been sold since President Obama took office. Last Black Friday, the FBI ran 185,341 background checks for gun purchases that day. Gun production has also increased by an outstanding 140 percent. President Obama has no interest in taking our guns away. No president could get away with taking away an amendment right like that. But whenever there is a mass shooting there seems to be an
increase in firearm and ammunition sales. Due to President Obama stating that he wants tighter gun restrictions, people take that as a threat to the second amendment and go on a shopping spree. All in all, the divide that has been set in this country is setting strange tension, and has led to an increase in gun sales. Maybe President Obama is actually just a pawn of the NRA to increase gun sales? It’s either a crazy conspiracy or a downright smart business tactic. Austin Lewis Grade 12, Mrs. Taylor, Victor High School Opinions instead of Facts In this day and age, the Second

Amendment is regularly discussed and highly controversial. It seems as though everybody has their own opinion about it. However, to form a solid argument, they must first have their facts straight. Recently, I have heard several quarrels regarding the actual meaning of the right to bear arms. People express their opinions of what “the right of the people” actually means but little do they know that the true meaning has already been legally established in the 2008 Supreme Court case: District of Columbia v. Heller. Briefly summarized, plaintiff Dick Heller could carry a gun at work in a federal office building, but not in his corrupt neighborhood. When
taken to the Supreme Court, it was established with a 5-4 decision that “the right of the people” did in fact mean the right of an individual for lawful purposes. Furthermore, the 2010 case of McDonald v. Chicago confirmed that the Second Amendment also protects the right to bear arms for self defense. In conclusion, I highly suggest that anyone looking to challenge the Bill of rights do their research on Supreme Court cases and learn legal interpretations before arguing with opinions instead of facts.
