Newspapers in Education

is an international program that promotes and increases our children’s literacy by using the newspaper as a teaching tool. NIE is a unique way for schools, businesses and the local newspaper to work together in a partnership that benefits all of us - now and in the future. Through the use of daily news, editorial, features and even advertising, students at all grade levels can learn math and cost comparison skills, geography and meteorology, history and current events and how they shape our world, all while improving reading and comprehension. The NIE program helps motivate and teach students with a textbook as fresh as each day’s news.

Editorials Smoking and Driving Smoking is bad for you, especially in the car. If your window is closed the smoke will be trapped in the car. That is bad for your lungs. I hope factories will stop making cigarettes and for people to stop smoking! Rylan Blanken, Mr. Waldo, 3rd Grade, Corvallis Primary Please Respect I am writing about people who curse. I think people should not curse because it is really rude and it can hurt people’s feelings. It is also disrespectful to God and other people. The solution is not to

curse. If you do, please stop! Preston Mullet, Miss Dresser, 3rd Grade, Hamilton Christian Academy Corvallis Swimming Pool I think we should have a pool and a swimming teacher in Corvallis. One reason is some people like me do not know how to swim. If people do not know how to swim and they are at the river, suddenly the current could take them away. Corvallis is very close to a river so it’s important that kids know how to swim. People might say that the parents can take their kids to Hamilton to swim, but some

parents don’t have gas to take them or no money. So, I hope Corvallis will build a pool. Shontay Hammons, Miss Jameson, 4th Grade, Corvallis Primary Video Games 45 Minutes a Day I think it’s wrong for kids to be able to play video games for as long as people do these days. For example, my dad bought my brother a fly box for putting his flies in and my brother was to pay him back. But when we got home, he couldn’t find his money. So dad made a deal

with him. He said don’t play video games for the rest of the day or we take the fly box back. My brother told my dad to take it back. My brother could not stop playing games for about 5 hours. This is why I think there should be a law that kids can only play video games for 45 minutes or less each day. Two reasons I believe video game playing should be limited for kids. One is that kids are being shown a lot of violence and they may start using violence. Another is that kids aren’t getting exercise when they just sit around playing video games. According to Dr. Mary Gavin,

Editorials kids who play video games for many hours a day do not get enough exercise and may become overweight. Also, she says kids do become aggressive if they play violent video games. I hope adults will not let their children sit around playing video games all day. Instead they should tell their kids to get outside and be active. Aden Fisher, Miss Jameson, 4th Grade, Corvallis Primary School Starts at 9am! I think people don’t want to wake up at 7:00 or 7:30. That’s way too early for kids, especially when they’re in kindergarten. And some-

times people hate to go to school so they want to stay home and sleep in. The want their parents to say they’re sick even when they’re not. People have trouble getting dressed and getting their stuff together. Some kids have brothers that don’t go to your school and it makes your parents mad because they’re always going to be late for work or school. Because of those reasons, I think school should start at 9:00am. Melaina Larot, Mrs. Waldo, 4th Grade, Corvallis Primary

No to Exotic Pets I think people should not keep exotic animals as pets. Scientists say that between 5000 and 7000 tigers are kept as pets. This is more than exist in the wild! In the years 1990 – 2011, 75 deaths were attributed to exotic pets. These deaths came from reptiles, elephants and big cats. It is dangerous to people and animals to keep exotic animals as pets. Abbi Shegrud, Miss Jameson, 4th Grade, Corvallis Primary Help the Shelter, Help the Animals I think people should not put animals down. I think people

should raise more money for the animal shelter. I also think they should adopt the animals instead of buying them. With the money that they saved, they can donate to the shelter. People should volunteer to work at the animal shelter. Savannah Lee, Mrs. Waldo, 4th Grade, Corvallis Primary Dance to Your Health Have you ever been walking by watching someone dancing and thought to yourself it was stupid? Well, I’m here to tell you more about what dance can do for you. Dance helps with other sports, and I believe that we should

Editorials have an opportunity to have a unit of dance in PE class at our schools. A 2003 New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine study shows that dancing can decidedly improve your brain health. This evidence shows that dance scientifically can help any brain troubles you might have. In 2012, researchers at North Dakota’s Minot State University showed that the Latin style dance program known as Zumba improves moods and certain cognitive skills, such as visual recognition and decision making. Dance is therapeutic for Parkinson’s

Disease. I think it’s very astonishing what dance can do for you. Scientific studies have proven that dance helps with agility and foot coordination in sports such as football. I believe that the studies have proven these facts are a great example of what dance can do for you. Kaitlin McCartney, Ms. Naughter, 6th Grade, Corvallis Middle School Save the Water, Save the Fish Did you know that pollution will affect all of us? Here are some reasons why. According to Kindra McQuillan from High Country News, chemi-

cals (mercury) from mines in Butte got dumped into the Clark Fork River and the fish swallowed the chemicals and got it into their bloodstream. Many animals eat fish including humans and those chemicals will then contaminate us. It will kill eagles, otters and other fish eating creatures. Putting up dams will mess up the natural water flow of streams that will ruin the fish environment. A fish kill is where many fish die in one place. The most common cause is agricultural bio-toxins. So don’t dump your fertilizer in places where a stream is close. Farmers shouldn’t spray

as much bug killer. Big companies that make clothes, soaps and other products and dump chemicals into the rivers will have the same effect as mercury. Oil will affect water and kill animals. We need to come up with a better way to mine oil without spilling. America’s air pollution is another problem. We breathe the air and we should take better care of it. This is what I think about pollution so take it into mind. Gavin Marston, Mr. Naughter, 6th Grade, Corvallis Middle School

Editorials Grass on Playground The playground at Hamilton Middle School is boring. With no grass to play on, there really is nothing to do. When you have grass on a playground it makes everything so much easier to play football, tag and a bunch of other stuff too. At this school a lot of kids play football but the problem is the ground is pavement. When people play football on pavement, they end up getting hurt. But at Daly school there was a bunch of grass to play on and you would not get hurt on that playground. When we were at Daly we played football and it was really fun. I know that HMS is

trying to get grass but I bet by the time we do, I will be in high school. The grass will help this school a lot with more stuff to do because all there is now is basketball and kickball. You can play football, but it’s really hard to play on pavement because of falling and getting hurt. That is why we need grass at Hamilton Middle School. Bridger Huxtable, Mr. Sparks, Grade 7, Hamilton Middle School Home Grown Food is the Best People should have large vegetable, herb and fruit gardens. First, if you grow fresh produce, you are inclined

to use it. This would cause people to make and eat home cooked meals and less store-bought and fast food. It is also cheaper to grow your own foods. My grandma grows raspberries in her backyard and makes all sorts of foods with them. However, most people cannot get their hands on enough raspberries and do much with them, simply because they are expensive. This is so much healthier than buying food from the store. Did you know that the average apple bought from the store is about eleven months old by the time it is eaten and has lost about 90% of its antioxidants and

nutrients. People have been known to die from going into the chemical rooms apples are stored in without proper protection. Andrew Searle, Mr. Sparks, Grade 7, Hamilton Middle School Bullying in the Schools Why do people pick on the weak and people who are different. It’s because kids want attention from other kids. Popularity and bullying can spread like wildfire. It jumps from one kid to another to where it’s a whole group of kids picking on just one kid. Bullying happens all around the world, even outside of

Editorials schools. Bullying happens to every kid from preschool to high school. It even happens to adults. Sometimes bullying starts with popularity. Most schools try to get rid of bullying but it doesn’t work, and some schools even agree that they do have bullying. There are many types of bullying. There is physical bullying which involves hitting, shoving, pushing, tripping and other kinds of force. Verbal bullying involves hurtful comments, name calling, and teasing. Social bullying involves using relationships to hurt someone. And last, cyber bullying. Cyber bullying happens over cell phones or on

the internet. Bullying is the use of force, threat or coercion to abuse, intimidate or aggressively dominate other kids. People say when being bullied it normally happens once or twice. But no, bullying happens every day at school. Dessa Svoboda, Mr. Sparks, Grade 7, Hamilton Middle School No More Puppy Mills Have you ever seen a puppy mill? Dark, dank, filled with the scent of despair and hopelessness. They are horrendously cruel places. Puppies in these places are bred for only one purpose – to be sold. They are ill-bred

Riley Dahlstrom, Grade 4, Mrs. Stuber, Corvallis Primary

and have deep behavioral and physical problems. These problems are often shoved into the backs of people’s minds, never to be thought of again. Unfortunately, millions of people buy from puppy mills unknowingly each year. A majority of the time, these poor animals are abandoned due to “bad” or “aggressive” behavior. At the same time, puppy mills are getting what they want – more money. The cycle just continues, but you can take action to stop it. First of all, never buy a dog from a pet store. Most of these poor pooches are taken from puppy mills. Secondly, never, ever buy a puppy from

a breeder who you haven’t visited. Ask to tour the kennels and meet the parents. Thirdly, make sure to visit your local shelter when shopping for a dog. Some of these puppies may have been puppy mill rescues. Donating to an organization that stops puppy mills, like ASPCA, is yet another way to help. Together, we can end puppy mills. Sydney Greek, Mr. Sparks, Grade 7, Hamilton Middle School Work Ethic is Hard Work Many people see the children of today as risk takers and hard workers. They see world changers and this is true, for

Editorials some. But in reality, many adolescents have no work ethic and no longer care because they have always had someone to fall back on. I have had personal experience with this. I was working on a major project in one of my elective classes and we were working as a group. I am an avid introvert and working with people is not something I often choose to do. This project was a major part of the grade that we would earn in the class. The project called for all of us working together and my classmate said that she would take care of something. She never finished as she was suffering

from “writer’s block” for four days. Because as a group we had come up with a failsafe we were able to get the full points available. Many children these days have lost their work ethic because someone has always been there to pick up the pieces of the mess they left behind when they left work unfinished that others were counting on them to do! Madison Kirkbride, Mr. Sparks, Grade 7, Hamilton Middle School Montana Water Rights In Montana, water is a very important resource. Unfortunately, water use is

a hard thing to come by. Restrictions on water use are called water rights. A water right is not the right to own water, but the right to use water. Rights can be bought with land, or can be bought on land already purchased. A water right on a property purchase can greatly increase the value of the land, thus increasing the price it sells for in market. When bought, a water right costs thousands of dollars per usage foot. Paying for water rights can be a difficult or even impossible task for many farmers and ranchers trying to start up a business which could in turn lead to less agriculture production

of goods. Not only is acquiring a water right a hard task, but using the permit can also be very difficult. After obtaining the permit, the applicant must begin to construct a water system, and that water system must be checked and approved by a certified water right examiner. Is getting water rights in Montana too tough? Should it be easier to have access to resources in this land? The answer is yes. Sam Holtzen, Ms. Weber, 9th Grade, Hamilton Christian Academy

She put on her fox shirt, pants, socks, necklace, bracelet, and shoes. She hopped in the car. Grandma drove to the animal breeder. She went in and came out with a bundle of red fluff. It gekkered. Grandma put the fluff in Shawna’s hands. They drove home. Shawn put the fox on her bed. She slid in with it. She pulled him closer. HE licked her face and panted. “Good boy, Khala.” Shawn woke and she realized she needed a sitter. Foxes are troublemakers,

he couldn’t be left alone. So she called a pet sitter. As soon as she got to the bus, the sitter pulled in the driveway. Khala scraped at the window, whimpering so Shawna would come. Grandma called Shawna on the bus home. “How’s the new pet?” “Great. He is very well-behaved.” Shawna replied. Just then, her fox phone case blinked. Her phone died. She got off the bus and went in the house. Khala assaulted her with gentle nips. She gave the sitter a tip. The house was as clean as when she left. The sitter was great! It does not cost to recycle here. My dad lets us take turns driving in the truck to recycle with him. When I learn how to drive, I will be able to do it myself. Right now I’m only 10 years old. Sarah Hall, Mrs. Blomquist, Grade 4, Florence-Carlton School 2005 Volkswagon Beetle absolutely beautiful, only 95K, on sale $4,999. 555-5555 It was 2007. After graduating Driver’s Ed, my dad bought me a car. His hands were over my eyes as we crept into the garage. He pulled them off. I saw the last thing I wanted to see. It was a yellow 2005 Volkswagon Beetle, with no space and many punches to come. After several

weeks, it met its end. I was driving along, my head hunched making sure no one would see this yellow monstrosity. I saw a van next to me, the driver, a frail teenager older than 16 and a big guy next to him. I was upset that they noticed me, the meaty guy childishly pointed at my car. He shouted, “SlugBug!” and punched the driver. He immediately turned, crashing into me. I panicked as my air bags inflated, blocking my view. I woke up in my car and was being towed by a white truck. The date is February 8, 2017. It’s been ten years since that whole ordeal but I decided to get it repaired. This car was special, but I had no use

for it. I sold it to the dealership. Later on I saw it in the newspaper. Its description said “adorable.” I wouldn’t say so! He jumped out of the comfy chair he was sitting in and ran into the garage. When he went in, he saw that only his wife’s car was in there. He ran outside and saw his car driving into the ditch on the side of the highway. He ran to the car, it sprayed oil in his face!
