Something for everyone at the Ravalli County Fair RAVALLI REPUBLIC
Between walking on water and the Bull-A-Rama, the 2017 Ravalli County Fair and Rockin’ RC Rodeo will offer a blend of the old and the new, providing something for everyone Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. The excitement is readily apparent in the voice of Cryss Anderson, managing director of the Ravalli County Fairgrounds as she goes down the list of free entertainment. “We’ve got Michael Mezmer, the hypnotist, who’s been here
before and we love to have him back,” Anderson said. “We’ll also have an interactive photo booth; you sit on a bench and can put whatever background you want – like riding a bull or a dolphin – and it will print the picture for you and also email it so you can post it on social media.” Mezmer performs twice daily at the KLYQ stage, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Water Walkers are inflatable balls that float on an outdoor

pool. People climb inside the balls and run across the pool. Up to six balls with riders can be on the water at one time. Another part of the inflatable fun zone is the Hippo Chow Down, which is similar to the board game Hungry Hungry Hippos, Anderson said. It’s a tug of war that involves speed, strength and agility. “Four people get bungee cords around them, then they race to the center and grab the balls before the bungees pull them back,” Anderson said. “It’s all free and great family fun.” Both the Hippo Chow Down and Water Walkers are in Mandy Park. The popular Cutest Show on Earth allows children to dress up and become star performers in a live theater experience. While entertaining, the show’s greater purpose is to build confidence and creative muscle in children. Located near the West Gate, the Cutest Show on Earth performs three times each day, at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Little People’s Rodeo is Friday at 5 p.m. at the KLYQ stage, with a Stick Horse Beauty Contest, Stick Horse Barrel Racing, and Dummy Roping. Aspiring rodeo queens are encouraged to enter the Miss Rodeo Pageant, with speeches, interviews and fashion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the KLYQ stage, followed by the horsemanship competition in the main arena at 3 p.m. and coronation at 6:15 p.m. Speaking of which, Miss Rodeo Montana Sarai McCollaum from Darby will be at the Ranch Rodeo on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. Miss Rodeo Montana serves as the “first lady of rodeo” with expertise in good sportsmanship and careful, humane treatment of animals. She also is a great public speaker. Thursday night’s rodeo, beginning at 7 p.m., includes the Bull-ORama and Cowboy Bronc Riding, followed by the NRA Rodeo at 7 p.m. Friday. The grand finale begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2. The fair gates are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with exhibit buildings open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The gate tickets include admission to all grandstand events, including the rodeos. The cost remains the same this year - $9 for adults and $25 for a four-day pass; or $7 for students, military and seniors who are 60 and

older, or $18 for a four-day pass. Children 5 and younger are free. It’s the seventh year for the Wrangled Words Poetry Contest, with original poems submitted by Bitterroot Valley poets. The fair wouldn’t be complete without the dozens of exhibits by community members and 4-H’ers. Don’t forget to check out the demonstrations including grain threshing, horsemanship and how to start plants from cuttings. “We also have some new fair vendors,” Anderson said, including “Taste of the Old World” that features Russian Food. “The elephant ears are back – always a crowd favorite – and we do have a lot of menu changes from our long-time vendors.” Remember – no dogs or alcohol are allowed, and smoking is prohibited in any fairground buildings.

Bob and Joan Nicholson are the 2017 Farm Family of the year for the Ravalli County Fair. They are natives to the Bitterroot, 4-H participants and supporters who raised four children, dairy cows, and Hampshire sheep.
2017 Farm family of the year belongs to the Nicholsons MICHELLE MCCONNAHA michelle.mcconnaha@ravallirepublic.com
The Farm Family of the Year, Bob and Joan Nicholson, is able to trace direct involvement in the Ravalli County Fair back to the 1930s. Margaret Yuhas, chair of the Fair Board, said she nominated the Nicholson family because they “represent what a fair family should be.” “They are a great family,” Yuhas said. “They are natives to the
Bitterroot, have always been an agricultural family and have always made their living with a dairy farm.” The Nicholson family has been in the Bitterroot Valley for years. “Her mother was Madge Chaffin Buck,” Yuhas said. “They’ve been involved in the fair, as were their parents. All their kids were involved in 4-H.” The couple said they had no idea they were being considered. “We’re surprised, humbled and honored,” Joan Nicholson said. Bob Nicholson was born in Darby and Joan in Corvallis, and their

parents were lifelong residents in the Bitterroot Valley. “Our folks knew each other in high school,” Joan Nicholson said. “Bob’s folks lived in Darby.” “I started 4-H in the fall of 1944,” Bob Nicholson said. “We’ve been involved with it all the way through.” They met while going to a 4-H congress in Bozeman. The high school sweethearts were married in 1955 and have enjoyed 62 years of marriage. They have four children, Don, Todd, Scott and Tracy, and eight grandchildren. Bob and Joan Nicholson were both ten-year plus members of 4-H. Bob Nicholson showed beef and dairy with Joan Nicholson showing sheep and participating in sewing and cooking. Their children were active in 4-H and all 10-year members. Of their eight grandchildren, two grew up in Ravalli County and were also 10-year members. “4-H was our life,” Joan Nicholson said. “Beyond that we’ve supported it. We were both 4-H leaders and our parents were too. Some people are athletics, some are speech, we’re 4-H.” Youngest son Scott Nicholson lives just down the road. Bob and Joan Nicholson live in the house where her mom lived; before that they lived on Willow Creek. “That was my granddad’s place and where we moved when we got married,” Joan Nicholson said. “When we say we’ve lived here all our lives, it means we’ve never left. This is the best and I’m not a bit sorry.” Yuhas said the Nicholsons raised dairy cows and Hampshire
sheep. “I know Scott would tell stories about his grandmother hand sheering sheep before we had electric sheers,” Yuhas said. “They had sheep and dairy cattle for many, many years.” Yuhas described the couple as always active. “To describe Joan, I would say she is a worker bee,” Yuhas said. “She is one of those people there working behind the scenes and always dependable. In the 1960s or ‘70s Bob was a sheep barn superintendent. They’ve always been involved in the north end of the fairground with large animals. They are very humble, very deserving hard-working people.” Most of their lives, the Nicholson family milked an average of 80 cows with their children and part-time help. Every day at 4 p.m. was chore time. “The kids knew better than to say ‘I’m bored.’ It wasn’t allowed,” Joan Nicholson said. “Tracy could shovel a calf pen as clean as anything rather than do dishes.” Bob Nicholson said the best part of being a dairy farmer was working together as a family. “Don was 17 when Tracy was born,” he said with a chuckle. “That year it was called Dairyman’s disease. There were four or five of us having one later.” Joan Nicholson also worked part-time in local stores. She worked in Corvallis at The Merc for five years, at Ford’s for 16 years and at Kmart for 10 years.

“I’ve always done retail work part-time, because I like people,” she said. Bob Nicholson has served on several boards - Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Farm Credit Board and the Big Ditch. “We are a staunch Grange family,” Joan Nicholson said. “We were both born into the two Granges. When Grange first started here, our folks were Grange members.” The Nicholsons said they have seen a lot of changes, with the largest watching the valley going from 100 dairies to three dairies. “We had that many just on this road with 25-30 cows each,” Bob Nicholson said. “That was life in the Bitterroot. Everyone had pigs and 15-20 cows. It was a life of agriculture.” “The flat part of the valley - where all the houses are - that was beets; my grandfather grew beets there,” Joan Nicholson said. “Cabbage and potatoes were quite a thing too.” The Nicholsons now only own 30 acres, down from their 120 acres on Summerdale Road, and 65 acres in a lower field, plus some rental acreage. Their house is in the Macintosh Orchard tracks and the trees are still producing. “To my mother, having an apple tree was a religious experience,” Joan Nicholson said. The children and grandchildren of Bob and Joan Nicholson will return for the Ravalli County Fair this year and ride in the fair parade with their parents as the 2017 Farm Family of the Year.

What is 4-H? Katelyn Andersen MSU/Ravalli County Extension
Perry Backus - Ravalli Republic
Fair food, free music, rodeo’s and 4-H animals are standard parts of fair, especially here in Ravalli County. Our 4-H members have been working hard all year in anticipation of showing off their projects to the county. The fair is a culmination of their 4-H year with the ability to showcase their projects to the public. Many people will be making their way to the fairgrounds to check out the champion winners in the 4-H livestock barns. One part of 4-H is the fair, one part is livestock animals, but 4-H is much more than fair and livestock. The 4-H program started around the turn of the 20th Century, as many society changes spurred the beginnings of 4-H. For example, families were moving from

rural settings to the cities. Schools wanted to incorporate agriculture in the classes. At this same time, researchers at the experiment stations (much like the MSU Experiment Station in Corvallis) noticed that adults in the farming community were not accepting new farming techniques. Educators found that youth were more likely to experiment with the new skills and ideas. These youth then taught their parents their discoveries. The “learning by doing” practice of 4-H was born. In 1914, the U.S. Congress created Cooperative Extension as a part of the land-grant universities to provide education to the public and to the 4-H program. The Ravalli County 4-H Program is the youth development program of Montana State University Extension. This connection to the university system makes 4-H different than other youth organizations. Here in Ravalli County, there are 21 community clubs, more than 160 registered adult leaders and more than 520 4-H members. Our county has two extension agents who provide education and leadership to the county to foster the 4-H

rewarded for their hard work and efforts from throughout the year. Exhibiting projects at the fair is designed to be an enjoyable educational experience, not just a contest. Each and every project entered under 4-H categories has had an interview with an adult judge, which provides youth the opportunity to demonstrate new knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes. Ravalli County 4-H members are doing projects that relate to cooking, livestock, sewing, poetry, dogs, horses, leathercraft, and much more. Their imagination is their limit. 4-H occurs year round with club meetings, project meetings and many different events, including trips, camps, fundraisers, or community service projects. If you are not taking the opportunity to experience the many different opportunities that 4-H offers, I would highly encourage you to look into those opportunities as many of them only come once in a lifetime. The fair is an amazing experience and a chance to see visually all the things that youth in Ravalli County are learning about. Here are some exciting 4-H events during the fair: - Horse Show: Saturday before fair in the grandstands, the youth exhibit their horse project. Even though it occurs prior to fair, we appreciate the hard work they put into making a great show. Come visit and cheer on the youth and their horses. -Round Robin: Friday evening, the top showmanship in each of the various project animals will try their hand at competing for the Round Robin Champion Showman. Join us at 4 p.m. for the Small Animal Round Robin and at 5 p.m. for the Large Animal Round Robin. -Livestock Sale: Saturday morning at the Hornung Arena. Although traditional, the Livestock Sale is always new and exciting. Come support agriculture in the valley! Stop by the 4-H indoor exhibits to check out the different fair entries or come by the livestock barns. Talk to the 4-H youth; you will learn a lot. If you would like to join one clubs in the valley and add to the 4-H membership, come by the MSU/Ravalli County Extension Office or call 375-6611.

Bred dairy heifer program unique in Ravalli County MICHELLE MCCONNAHA michelle.mcconnaha@ravallirepublic.com
The 4-H Bred Dairy Heifer Program that culminates with the sale of the heifer at the Ravalli County Fair started when more than 100 dairies in the valley encouraged youth to raise an agriculture product and visit the animal later on a ranch or local dairy.
Heidi Martin, superintendent of the program, said the program is special. It’s a two-year project that begins with the young participants visiting a local dairy. “There is not another Bred Dairy Heifer Program like the one in Ravalli County,” Martin said. “The dairies are really good at working with these kids and will pick a calf they are willing to sell. That’s a big deal for a dairy to give up one of their heifer calves.”

Dave Kostecki has been a leader for three years with Ravalli County 4-H with the Bitterroot Shooting Stars 4-H Club in Florence. He is a role model for leadership in the sheep program not only at the club level but at the county level. Dave will go out of his way to educate, encourage and assist all youths in their project. He hosts many sheep project meetings and allows any 4-H member to attend their meetings. He has taken youth to workshops, jackpots and showmanship clinics around the state to help educate and help them improve their skills. We appreciate Dave’s help with the 4-H membership and look forward to many more years to come. Five days of rodeo events kick off on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at the Ravalli County rodeo grounds.
Rodeo grounds benefit from new sound system RICK ROWAN RICHARD.ROWAN@RAVALIREPUBLIC.COM
A new sound system at the Ravalli County rodeo grounds will bring fans closer to the action than ever before, at this year’s Rockin’ RC Rodeo. During the past year, volunteers and workers put in countless hours of upkeep on the rodeo grounds. They sanded and painted bleachers, built a new VIP pavilion, and readied the sound system
and scoreboard. Five days of events at the rodeo grounds kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 30, with the Horse and Mule show at noon and ends with the National Rodeo Association Finals on Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. The improvements to the rodeo grounds were mostly funded from the annual cowboy ball dance and fundraising event, which draws between 500 and 600 people each year. The sound system upgrade has been a multi-year process and people will appreciate it, according to the fair committee.
Ravalli Republic, Sunday, August 27, 2017 - 23
“You’ll hear the rodeo this year,” Cryss Anderson, the fairgrounds director, said at a recent fair board meeting. Rod Freeman, a fairgrounds commission board member, said sponsors of the rodeo can sit in the VIP pavilion and a few lucky people will get the opportunity to go behind the scenes of the rodeo. “Two or three cowboys will take a group on a 30-minute tour to explain the scoring system and how the animals are taken care of,” Freeman said. “It’s great for people who are unfamiliar with the events.” According to Freeman, the Ravalli County rodeo draws some of the best athletes on the National Rodeo Association tour because it’s the penultimate event of the season. “We’re always a full crowd,” Freeman said. “The rodeo entrants like that because it helps them get pumped up before they compete.” The Ravalli County rodeo received in excess of 200 entrants for the 2017 event. Most of them travel with the NRA tour, but there are local competitors too.

“We try to have all the local competitors run in the main rodeo,” Freeman said. “But slack runs Saturday morning from 9-12, so if you’re looking to watch one event or a particular person that’s a good place to go.” The Ranch Rodeo, an event started just last year, will take place Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. According to Freeman, the event is a great opportunity for teams to complete the tasks cowboys and cowgirls do regularly, such as milking a wild cow, and branding, sorting, doctoring and loading cows. “Rodeo is a sport,” Freeman said. “People often think of it as an old west thing, but it’s really athletic.” On Thursday night at 7 p.m. the rodeo grounds will host competitors in the bronc riding and the bull-o-rama events. The NRA rodeo events are Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. A gate ticket to the fairgrounds includes access to the rodeo. Since 1996, the Ravalli County Rodeo has won four Rodeo of the Year awards and nine Rodeo Grounds of the Year awards. According to Freeman, they’ll be among the competitors again this year. “We’re always in the running,” Freeman said.

The seventh annual Ravalli County Fair Poetry Contest culminates in a reading by the top poets at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the Entertainment Tent. Listen to the lively orations of the eight semi-finalists in three different age categories as they bring their original poems to life by sharing what is on their minds and in their hearts. could be on any topic and in any form, including to Haiku, acrostics, rhyming and not rhyming. The Ravalli County Fair Poetry Contest has had a good response throughout the years. This year the contest received 34 entries for students in grades K-6, nine entries from high school students, and 27 poems from adults. The poems have been judged, writers contacted and the presentations will be filled with beautiful imagery, as the writers know how to turn a phrase. The emcee for the event will be Dominic “Flominic” Farrenkopf. He said the numbers of entries and poetry appreciation has increased in the valley in part because he has traveled to high schools and elementary schools giving poetry writing workshops. Farrenkopf organizes the event, reads the poems, catalogs the poems, finds the five anonymous judges and gets them the poem packets. “The judges don’t compare the poems against each other but grade the poem with a red, white or blue ribbon,” Farrenkopf said. The ribbons equal a point value and “we tally the total of the five judges and the poem with the highest points is the winner.” Farrenkopf said most of the competitors are from the Bitterroot Valley, but this year the contest received two unusual entries. “We had one entry from New York because we posted the contest on Facebook, and also an inmate at a prison in Montana entered the contest this year,” Farrenkopf said. “He emailed a poem. It’s kind of neat. He can’t come to the reading but we can send him a certificate if he does happen to be a semi-finalist. ” Prizes will be awarded to the top three in categories K-6 grades, 7-12 grades and 18 years and older. Prizes include all-day carnival ride passes for younger groups and Chapter One Book Store gift certificates for the 18 and older group. Farrenkopf encourages fairgoers to attend the poetry contest to see and hear the local talent as they showcase their work at a unique venue. “The poets that perform at the Ravalli County Fair come from a variety of backgrounds and writing levels,” Farrenkopf said. “They are all united on the stage and very supportive of each other. Even though it is a contest, the poets all maintain a very good atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement of each other. The poems presented at the contest are all very good and are always MICHELLE MCCONNAHA - Ravalli Republic enjoyed by the audience. Last year Montana poet laureate Tami Haaland (left) visited the Ravalli County Fair Poetry Contest presentations.
