Corvallis’ Jankunas is a high character kid MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic

Esther Jankunas has attended Corvallis Schools since first grade. “I’ve stayed at Corvallis because I’ve kept my first-grade friends and I really enjoy the teachers,” Jankunas said. “Obviously, there are problems at any school but Corvallis students are kind and considerate.” During high school, Jankunas participated in tennis for two years and Interact (sponsored by the Hamilton Rotary Club) for three years. “I really enjoyed Interact, it got me out into the community doing service,” she said. Her volunteering also bolstered her college applications. Jankunas said she has always been good at English and learned immensely from Corvallis educator Art Rzasa. “Advanced Placement junior English with Mr. Rzasa was my favorite class, I feel like my writing skills improved dramatically,” she said. “My plans include going to the University of Montana and my major is English and possibly teaching. I try to keep my mind open so if I take a class and like it I can do that.” Principal Jason Wirt described Jankunas as a “high character kid.” “She works hard, does the right thing, treats people the right way and doesn’t seek the spotlight,” Wirt said. “She is unassuming and it is not all about her. She’s is just a great student.”

Hamilton’s Bosio headed to Notre Dame MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic

Sam Bosio said he has enjoyed his time at Hamilton High School, the different activities that were offered and the challenging courses. “I got to play soccer, and do Science Olympiad and Envirothon,” he said. “In each activity there was a different group of people but it didn’t matter who because I had a fun time with all of them. I appreciate the wide variety of activities and how everyone is supportive of each other.” Bosio said the strong science program is his favorite and he misses retired teacher Anthony Favero. “We have really good science teachers. Mrs. Faris did a good job taking on three classes in one year and Mrs. Antonioli teaches health and anatomy which is really good,” Bosio said. “The teachers make students really think about what they are doing and use good science methods instead of just memorizing stuff.” Bio Tech and Anatomy were his favorite electives. Bosio plans to study Environmental Science at Notre Dame. He feels that HHS prepared him for the challenging program with Advanced Placement classes and challenging electives. “I have lots of homework, which I had to balance with sports which is really good practice for college,” he said. “Especially in the spring when I’m driving and flying places for soccer. It was important for me to do homework

in the car. I was complaining about having to study for four AP tests but my mom said it’s a lot like college finals.” Principal Dan Kimzey called Bosio, “a little bit of a Renaissance Man.” “He’s a talented soccer player with an amazing science mind, a decorated Tae Kwon Do disciple, an Eagle Scout, and is an outstanding student in every academic area,” Kimzey said. “It has been awesome to see him mature into a first-class academic achiever who should be an asset to the Notre Dame campus immediately. Possibly most importantly, Sam Bosio is a kind and respectful young man who is revered by students and staff for his outstanding achievement and character.” Bosio said he appreciates the educational staff at HHS. “The teachers care about what you have to say and you actually have discussions with them,” he said. “They give lots of homework and challenging tests. Honestly, for such photo provided a small school they do a really good job of preparing you for what college is like. No one tells you want to do and you have to adapt and figure things out for yourself.” He is ready to be done with high school but will miss friends and teachers. “I think whether you’re in high school or college it is always the people you miss when you move on,” Bosio said. “I’m ready to be done but will miss the people I met along the way.”

Stevensville’s Bragg an “amazing leader” MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic

Stevensville High School Principal Brian Gum selected Dalton Bragg as the school’s featured senior calling him an “amazing leader both on and off the basketball court.” “The younger student athletes look up to Dalton, as he has a way with people,” Gum said. “He is respectful and courteous to all students and staff at SHS.” Bragg has attended Stevensville Schools since kindergarten and values his education. “It is always interesting and the teachers are super-helpful,” Bragg said. “The administration is really nice and it is really tight-knit.” Bragg has always enjoyed playing basketball and enjoyed the major roles he’s had on the Yellow Jacket team. “It kept me entertained and taught me a good work ethic,” Bragg said. “My favorite coach is Tom Demmons, he retired this year. I have a very good relationship with him and he has been a big influence on me in a positive way.” In classes, he has always enjoyed the discussions in his history classes but will major in Occupational Safety and Health at Montana Tech in Butte. He had planned to play for the Ore Diggers but injuries have sidelined that opportunity. “I was injured but received a scholarship to go there and so I’m going to go with it,” Bragg said.

Congratulations to the Class of 2018 From your friends at

His first injury was in July, with surgery in August. The second injury came the end of March and he’s decided to give up basketball and focus on his studies. “Dalton over the last two years has had to deal with two knee surgeries to repair his ACL,” Gum said. “Throughout this process, he has stayed upbeat and not let it get him down. His perseverance will take him far in life, as I know michelle mcconnaha/ravalli republic he will do big things Stevensville High School’s featured senior Dalton Bragg will major in in this world. Dalton Occupational Safety and Health at Montana Tech in Butte. defines what a student leader is at SHS and I’m proud to have him as our featured senior.” Bragg said he feels prepared for college. “I feel it is up to individuals to prepare themselves,” he said. “Some kids don’t work hard and are not prepared. But if you do what the teachers say they set you up for success.” Bragg will miss family and friends in Stevensville when he moves on. “It is such a close community here and everyone is really nice, so I’ll miss that,” Bragg said. “At the same time I’m ready to move on to a new chapter too. I’m excited.”

Victor High School’s Featured Senior Elijah Rosen is also the valedictorian. He started in Victor in second grade and stayed

because it is a “small school with a good sense of community.” “It is like a family where everybody knows everybody,” Rosen said. “If someone has a problem, continued page 27

people and teachers are there for you. The smaller classes mean more individual attention and you get a very good personal connection with all the teachers.” Rosen said he enjoys knowing all the teachers and seeing them around the small town of Victor. He chose to be in as many activities as he could including Student Council, National Honor Society and three seasons of sports – football, basketball and track. One highlight has been the school’s mentorship program a pairing of older and younger students. “If their teacher thinks they need a mentor – and it could be an elementary or middle school student – they sign them up,” Rosen said. “You meet with them at a minimum of once per week for a half an hour. It doesn’t sound like a lot but for those kids it can make a huge difference.” Rosen said shooting hoops, working on homework or making a comic book were activities with his partner that provided time to talk. “We talked about how the day is, that they are getting their work done and that they feel safe,” he said. “It is big with many high school students involved in it. The program is available to anyone but if you’re in honor society, student council or an athletic program you’re asked to do it.” Rosen has enjoyed all VHS classes, especially math. He’s taken many Advanced Placement classes through the Montana Digital Academy (MTDA). “The schedule is flexible and the MTDA classes are worked into a normal class schedule,” he said. This fall, Rosen will attend Western Washington University in Bellingham. “They have a non-accredited Vehicle Design Program which will be fun,” he said. “It is like industrial design mixed with mechanical engineering. I’ll see where it takes me. There are usually up to 10 graduates in that program each year with a lot of personal time with the teachers.” The Vehicle Design Program uses a mix of computer aided design (CAD), drafting programs, 3-D modeling, 3-D printers and clay modeling. Rosen has always loved art, drawn cars since he was young and enjoys working on cars. Rosen said he is ready for college, life in a big city and new challenges. “Victor has been great to me,” Rosen said. “I was a problem child in elementary school but cleaned up my act and have worked really hard.
