Corvallis High School senior Brian Healy said school has been a great experience. “CHS has been amazing for me because I’ve found support from teachers at every turn,” Healy said. “I’ve made friends through academics, athletics and extracurriculars. People in Corvallis are nice and it is a great community.” Healy likes to ski, hike, spend time with friends, watch movies and run. “I feel a great sense of community associated with the school and everyone there,” he said. “I’m proud to be a Blue Devil and I’ll be sad to leave because I don’t think any-

Science Olympiad, which I’ve also done since sixth grade, has also been great. We’ve had fun trips and fun people, good stuff. I’ve had a great time in the media classes, I want to be a filmmaker now.” Healey currently works at Rocky Mountain Lab, working with animation and graphic design. He is a National Merit

Corvallis High School senior Brian Healy is a National Merit scholarship recipient who challenged himself academically, and with track and cross country.
Scholarship winner who received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Idaho where he will study virtual technology and design with a minor in broadcasting and film. Corvallis Principal Cammie Knapp said she chose Brian because he challenged himself academically over the past four years to become a National Merit Scholarship recipient. “It has been an honor to work with Brian over the past four years,” Knapp said. “He is a super sharp and motivated student who has
taken the opportunity to participate in both rigorous courses and a competitive addition to our varsity athletics.” Knapp said Healy strives to make a difference to those around him and is not someone who would seek recognition for his accomplishments. “Which makes it more of an honor to recognize him from Corvallis High School,” she said.

Florence - Carlton’s Mamuzich faced challenges to graduate MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Florence-Carlton High School senior Shaela Mamuzich was in a serious car accident last March, resulting in significant injuries. Though not expected to survive the wreck, she did. She wasn’t expected to walk or talk, but she did. And no one expected her to graduate with her class, but she will reach that goal on June 1. Mamuzich attended Florence schools for all of her education. “I like how it is small and there are not a lot of people,” she said. “The teachers are so great and really help.” Before the accident Mamuzich was a quiet, shy, basketball player and barrel racer. After the accident she had a personality change where she is more outgoing, but worries about hitting her head forced her to give up basketball. Mamuzich’s mother, Julie, said her daughter followed the Florence Girls’ basketball team, sat on the bench and cheered on the Florence Falcons. Her doctors said she is not
allowed to barrel race but have recently been given the green light to horseback riding. “But I’m not ready for her to ride,” Julie Mamuzich said. “Her barrel horse is having some leg issues so we’re looking for another horse. Well, we’re not really looking.” Shaela Mamuzich said her favorite subject is English because she loves to read fiction and fantasy and the teacher had expanded the curriculum to prepare her students for the workforce. “She taught us what to do and say in interviews,” Mamuzich said. “It’s like she was getting us ready for what we need when we graduate. I really like that.” After graduation from FCHS, Mamuzich plans to take a Certified Nursing Assistant course from Bitterroot College in the fall. Someday she would like to be a nurse at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula where she received care after the accident. “I just want to help people,” Mamuzich said. “I like how the nurses helped me. I really want to work with patients that have a head injury too, since my experi-

ence with that.” For her senior project, she did a job shadow with a neurologist at St Patrick Hospital and Health Sciences Center. She didn’t break any bones in the accident but it affected the portion of her brain used for math and memory. Julie Mamuzich credits FCHS educator Autumn Bonds with her daughter’s progress. “Mrs. Bonds worked very, very hard with preparing Shaela so she could graduate,” Julie
Mamuzich said. “The teachers have been awesome.” “Shaela is an outstanding person who faces obstacles with determination and a positive attitude,” Bonds said. “I am in awe of her, and her family’s, determination and tenacity. She not only is going to graduate from high school with her class but she wants to go on to become a nurse so she can help others. I have no doubt that she will conquer any challenge life can throw at her.”

Hamilton’s Lauren Ryter Congratulations Bitterroot graduates! From your friends at is “the total package as a student” MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Hamilton High School senior Lauren Ryter has attended Hamilton schools since she started kindergarten in Washington Primary School and has learned to love the environment. “Hamilton schools are awesome, I had a good educational experience,” Ryter said. “Before high school, I wasn’t about school pride but growing up here and being involved in high school I developed a lot of pride in our school. We have amazing art programs and all of our academics. I think I’ve learned to appreciate what we have.” Ryter was busy with Student Council, Key Club, Girls State, music festivals, musical (“Fiddler on the Roof”), Envirothon, National Honor Society, varsity soccer and varsity basketball. Ryter said her favorite class is Advance Placement Environmental Science. “I’ve always enjoyed my science classes,” Ryter said. “I think they are more challenging for me and I enjoy doing labs that are visual. It is there where I found a passion for learning about the environment and I plan to major in environmental science in college.” For her senior project she worked with Ani Mason to develop Bronc Park in the southeast area of the new sports complex at Hamilton High School. “We’re still looking for a junior to take over and do it,” Ryter said. She has been accepted by Rocky Mountain College where she will play basketball for the Battling Bears and study environmental science. HHS Principal Dan Kimzey said Ryter used her high school time wisely and is “the total package as a student.” “Lauren has been involved in a little bit of everything during her time at HHS, from keeping the goal or kicking the long bomb in soccer, to her leadership in basketball, and her participation in all student-leadership organizations and our most demanding academic courses,” he said. “She is an excellent student who has managed her time well in order to be so deeply involved and committed to those extras that are so important to many kids.” Kimzey said he can’t wait to see her in action as a Rocky Mountain College ladies basketball player. “Just as we can’t wait to see the contributions that she will make with her academic prowess over the next four or five years,” he said.

HCA’s Alice Wirick is overcomer who encourages others MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Hamilton Christian Academy senior Alice Wirick was born in the Philippines and went to an orphanage at age 6. She came to America in 2010 was adopted by Wendy Wirick and attended HCA for six years. “It was a gift from the Lord,” Alice Wirick said about being adopted. “There were some challenges with the language and the discipline,” she said. “We had to speak English to understand people and in the orphanage we did what we wanted to do. Even though there was staff taking care of us, we did our own thing.” She said America and Montana are “very different” from the Philippines. “The first time we got snow we were wearing shorts and flip flops,” she said. After moving to Montana, Alice was initially homeschooled, but then attended Grantsdale Elementary School for fifth grade, the same school building that became Hamilton Christian Academy. “It was awesome,” she said. “I was several levels behind but during sixth grade I did an online program so that I could catch up with other kids, which was amazing. Now I’m caught up.” Wirick said that Hamilton Christian Academy is rigorous academically. “The teachers teach everyone plus we get to have one-on-one interaction with them,” she said. “That is what I needed and I loved that. The schooling is challenging and they expand our brain and make us think.” Wirick said values the “wonderful relationships.” “We are all family here,” she said. Her favorite subject is English where she enjoys reading, participating in the class discussions and spelling. “For some reason I really enjoy English even though I struggle with it,” she said. “Spelling has always been one of my favorites.”

Hamilton Christian Academy senior Alice Wirick was born in the Philippines and has been in America seven years. She is pictured here receiving an award from Hamilton Mayor Dominic Farrenkopf.
Wirick plans to take a phlebotomy course through Bitterroot College and work towards her ultimate goal of medical school. She job shadowed at the hospital laboratory and observed in the Emergency Department at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. “It was a wonderful observation and education,” Wirick said. “The medical field is an amazing thing. Other people are doing missions but I’d like to use my nursing experience to be a traveling nurse or use it in a mission field. That would be great as long as it is the Lord’s will for me to do so.” Wirick is president of the HCA “Serve Club” that focuses on serving the community. Service projects include “A PromTastic Evening,” highway cleanup, a food drive and helping anyone who needs help, including people in the school’s neighborhood. She also was a bell ringer for The Salvation Army in December. “PromTastic is for students with special needs to come here and feel blessed, special and loved,” Wirick said. “We do it every year. We decorate, do crafts and mostly dance because they love that. We show them the love of Christ.” HCA Administrator/Principal Stephanie Beck
said Wirick is “a respectful, helpful young person who looks you in the eye and greets you with a smile.” “Although Alice has only lived in the United States for seven years, she depicts what American people are proud of: hard work, giving spirit, respect of authority and grit,” Beck said. “Alice is an overcomer who encourages everyone around her and is a shining example of servant leadership. She earned Superior at Stillwater Music Festival for Women’s trio and Superior with Invitation to Nationals at Fine Arts Festival in Great Falls for worship trio.” Wirick received an Outstanding Student Citizenship award from Hamilton Mayor Dominic Farrenkopf that listed her as helpful, hardworking and caring for the community. “I have personally attended the special-needs prom that she puts on each year at Hamilton Christian Academy,” Farrenkopf said. “Her vast community service also made her a great candidate for the award. Alice is very motivated and I am positive she will go places!” “I’m thankful for the people that have invested in me - my family, church and HCA and helped me grow to who I am supposed to be,” Warick said.

Lots of golf in Stevensville senior Ivan Yazvac’s future following graduation MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Stevensville Senior Ivan Yazvac has attended Stevensville schools since kindergarten and said the best part of school are the friends and teachers. “It has always just been a great environment for me,” Yazvac said. “I think a lot of good people come out of Stevensville. I’ve definitely have enjoyed going here my whole life.” After graduation, Yazvac will have a new experience. “It will be my first time to be a new student as I head off to college,” he said. “I’m going to go to Ohio. We have a lot of family there and my parents are moving with me.” Yazvac will attend Walsh University, a 4-year private non-profit, coeducational, Roman Catholic university in North Canton, Ohio. He plans to play on their golf team and study sports management. “I feel there are more opportunities there than there are here, but I hope to come back because it is really beautiful here,” Yazvac said. “There are a lot more golf courses there than there are here.” He started golfing his freshman year when his dad introduced him to the sport. “I just fell in love,” he said. “It is a challenge physically and mentally. Being a solo sport, there’s no one else to blame but myself when I hit a bad shot. I can’t let it carry over to the next shot. I have to find my own motivation to recover from it.” This past year of playing for the Yellow Jackets golf team Yasvac earned the “All State” designation. “I shot pretty well and our team got third at state,” he said. “I shot an 82 on the first day and a 77 the second day.” Yazvac called playing a sport for hours outside a blessing. “Each course is beautiful in its own way and every course has a new set of challenges,” he said. “The goal is always the same, but there are so many components that make it different each time I play.” Yazvac said he most enjoyed physical education classes and math. “I like numbers and accounting,” he said. “I’m not super into statistics but I do enjoy reading statistics.” He also has played basketball and managed the football and basketball teams. “I definitely like hanging out with my friends,” Yazvac said. “Being involved ties in with sports management. I pretty much like any sport.”
michelle mcconnaha/ravalli republic
Stevensville senior Ivan Yazvac plans to move to Ohio following graduation to study sports management and play on Walsh University’s golf team.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and enjoys the service aspect. “Service is one of our pillars,” he said. “This week we went to Missoula Food Bank and made care packages with canned food. They will ship them off to more rural places in Montana for further distribution from there.” Yazvac is a member of the Knights of Columbus and cooked at their fish fries during the religious season of Lent at St. Mary’s Church. Yazvac was selected as “Teen of the Year” in 2018 by the Stevensville Civic Club. “I’ve always been involved in miscellaneous service project in the community,” he said. “I even helped out with the Methodist Church and Bible studies with those kids.” Yazvac has a school rank of 27. “I’m the second-ranked boy,” he said. “We have a lot of really smart girls in our school. They are outstanding. I’m really going to miss my classmates and Stevensville.” Principal Brian Gum said Yazvac was this year’s Prom King and is an exceptional student. “I selected Ivan because he exemplifies grades, behavior, attitude and a work ethic you don’t see from many students today,” Gum said. “I have been fortunate enough to know Ivan for the last 10 years and I have had the pleasure of coaching Ivan in football, basketball and baseball throughout his time growing up here in Stevensville. You will not find a student who is more deserving than Ivan, for this honor. Ivan truly epitomizes what it means to be a Yellowjacket.”

Victor High School senior Tristin Chavez is all about basketball and being there to encourage others. Victor High School senior Tristin Chavez has attended school at Victor for all his education since kindergarten. Chavez said the best thing about Victor school is that everyone helps each other. “Unlike big schools where they tell you what to do, at Victor they help you,” he said. “If you’re really struggling in something they will come together. The staff really cares about you.” Physical education is his favorite subject. “I’m a basketball fanatic,” Chavez said. “I have averaged 13 points this year as a point guard. I started off pretty rough. I used to be a shooting guard.” He explained that in the past he was heavyset but experienced transformation. “My freshman through sophomore year, I was 260 pounds,” Chavez said. “I played basketball on my own. I was scared to go play because I didn’t want to be judged. I completely changed my life around. Junior year I was 220 and then took basketball seriously and now am at 165. I feel great, there is huge weight gone,

not just physical but also mental.” Motivation to lose weight came from the desire to play varsity basketball for the Victor Pirates. “I wanted to have more playing time and be the best I could be,” he said. “I originally wasn’t fast and couldn’t shoot like I can now. Playing varsity was good, when we came together we played really good. None of us played year-

continued from page 26 round together so we didn’t have the chemistry but there were times when we were unstoppable and no one could do anything against us.” Chavez said he has always loved basketball. Growing up, he would stay and shoot until he made a basket. He would like to play college basketball and plans to study to be a physical trainer or coach. “Basketball is my dream, that is what I want,” he said. “I definitely feel better when I’m playing basketball. I have my school schedule set up to include basketball as much as possible.” Chavez’s favorite teacher is Rick Gulman who teaches English and is the Victor basketball coach. “We have a pretty strong connection,” Chavez said. Victor school has a mentorship program where older kids meet with younger kids regularly and serve as good examples to them. Chavez has seven kids that he mentors in second through eighth grades. “Every day I take a kid and we go play basketball,” he said. “I try to lift them up if something is going on and I teach them how to be good. Looking out for others is important. If I see someone down then can make them smile and change their whole day that just completes it.” Victor Schools Counselor Cynthia DavidsonMartin said Chavez is an outstanding role model and mentor. “He volunteered to mentor several of our students in the younger grades,” she said. “He was only required to mentor one student to be in the Victor Mentor Program and he has continued to take on more and more students. The difference he has made has been phenomenal.” At age 11 Chavez experienced heartache when his oldest brother, age 15, passed away in a car accident. “I was the middle child and it was pretty rough,” he said. “Shortly after that my parents divorced. Throughout my childhood I always felt that I needed something and was by myself. Now I feel that if I can be the person I needed when I was young it will help them.” Chavez is an encourager who focuses on brightening the lives of those around him.
