mary School

Holly Snyder’s teaching goes outside the classroom – and beyond the school year. The third grade teacher at Corvallis Primary School spends the first three weeks of summer vacation running an educational camp along with her teaching partner and a handful of teaching assistants. And those TA’s are all former students of Snyder. That says something when your students want to come back to school to help in the summer. “She’s so awesome and she makes the best treats ever,” soon-to-be seventh grader Catherine Hart said of Snyder while at the 36-student camp featuring math and scientist training with rocket launches and robots. Snyder, who has taught for 16 years and run the camp for 14, has a unique outlook on school and her responsibility as a teacher. It may very well be that outlook that had her selected as Bitteroot’s Best. “...I love what I do. Super passionate about helping kids find out what they love. School isn’t necessarily for every kid, but school can be a place where a kid can find out what they love,” Snyder said. “A big part of my job is helping them build relationships with each other. I really work hard at building a solid relationship with my students. “If my kids came home happy and excited about what they’re doing in school, it was a good day. They know that their teacher cares about them and that’s what it’s all about.”

Annual Festival/Event: Daly Days

bitterroot’s best annual event: daly days

When an event can edge a brewfest for best yearly festival, you know it’s doing something right. Daly Days, celebrating its 25th anniversary in downtown Hamilton, is fun for the whole family with two days of street vendors, a car show a weiner dog race and activities for all ages. Hamilton Downtown Association executive director Claire Kemp said this year’s Daly Days, slated for July 26-27, will have even more fun and games for the community to enjoy. “We have a lot more child and family games that are free,” Kemp said. We’ve really encouraged people to set up booths that have a fun game to play.” Daly Days is essentially a founder’s day festival that celebrates the town’s heritage and allows local small business owners to offer great sales. It also shows off Hamilton’s unique and vibrant downtown. “Particularly in small towns, downtowns really can be sad. We don’t have that,” Kemp said “We have a very cherished downtown. We’re Hamilton, we’re bridge to bridge, every business is important to us, but our downtown is a place we can gather.”

Clothing Store: Ford’s Department Store Community Involved Business: Massa Home Center

The family-owned Massa Home Center actively demonstrates why it’s so important to buy locally. And they put their money where their mouth is. “We have always been huge proponents of shopping locally. When people do that we are able to help out in the community,” owner Deana Wolfe said. “People have a choice where they get to shop and when they shop with us we want them to know that we value it by putting it back into the community.” The projects are numerous. From giving materials at cost to the construction of Hamilton’s track and field throwing pits to fundraisers for local families to have presents under the tree and their continued involvement with the Linda Massa Youth Homes – named for Deana’s mom, it’s no wonder Massa Home Center was named the Bitteroot’s Best Community Involved Business. “We like to be involved with a myriad of projects. From sports to things that are certainly geared toward educational experiences,” Wolfe said.

New Biz Opened Within Year: Maria’s Restaurant

What the community is saying… “I think they opened within the last year. They are feeding kids this summer because school is out and she doesn’t want kids going hungry.” Maria Chavez, owner and namesake of Hamilton’s best new business, may have earned the community’s love with a counterintuitive business strategy. Her restaurant, which opened on July 27, 2018, runs a summer program for kids where anybody that needs a place to eat can stop by from 1-5 p.m., Monday through Saturday for a free meal. Yes, free. “I’m very flattered and actually kind of shocked at the community support,” Chavez said. “I think what touched a lot of people was for our first year being open we offered a free Thanksgiving dinner for the community and we give free lunches for the kids.” The Mexican-style food is downright tasty, too at the second-story restaurant in downtown Hamilton.

New Car Dealer: Mildenberger Motors Non-Profit: Emma’s House Office Supplies: The Paper Clip Pawn Shop: Bitterroot Trading Post Pest Control: Bug Off

What the community is saying… “Love the folks over at Bug Off! They use natural bug spray and I have a home that’s safe and free of spiders and other Montana bugs. Also used their mouse bait rocks made of plastic, a bear can’t break it! Put all around our house and barn and they feed the mice out in the field, they die and don’t transfer poison to dogs and pets.” bitterroot’s best non-profit: emma’s house
