or many, the Christmas holiday has evolved into nothing more than buying a bunch of gifts for a bunch of people and getting a bunch of gifts that cost a bunch
of people a whole bunch of money. Gifts, gifts, gifts. Is that what this season is all about? There are many reasons to celebrate the Christmas season and many ways in which to celebrate it. Giving gifts is one of those many ways. However, perhaps some of us need to reconsider our motives and expectations in gift giving. Perhaps we can learn from those who have looked more deeply than the names and items on a written-out list and the credit card’s limit. As you ponder this year’s purchases, consider these thoughts and examine your motives: • Rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind. – William Shakespeare • The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention. – Richard Moss • May no gift be too small to give, nor too simple to receive, which is wrapped in thoughtfulness, and tied with love. – L.O. Baird • You may give gifts without caring, but you can’t care without giving. – Frank A. Clark • When I give, I give myself. – Walt Whitman • There is no benefit in the gifts of a bad man. – Euripides • What is a true gift? One for which nothing is expected in return. – Chinese Proverb • The spirit in which a thing is given determines that in which the debt is acknowledged; it’s
the intention, not the face value of the gift, that’s weighed. – Lucius Annaeus Seneca • Give! Give the love you have received to those around you. You must love with your time, your hands, and your hearts. You need to share all that you have. – Mother Teresa When our motives are pure, we may find that the reward in giving is more than just seeing someone smile and hearing a thank you: • You always get back much more than you give. – Jimmy Carter • We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. – Winston Churchill • Generous people are rarely mentally ill. – Karl Menninger • To give without any reward, or any notices, has a special quality of its own. – Ann Morrow Lindbergh • In the sphere of material things, giving means being rich. Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much. – Erich Fromm You can buy things and you can give gifts, but will your present reflect your genuine appreciation for the receiver? Will your gift simply fulfill an obligation or will it show you care? Maybe this is the year to put a little more thought into the gift selection process. Considering the wisdom of those who have gone before, you may find yourself in the midst of a merrier Christmas.

Be Happy
This holiday season, the only thing more important than what lies beneath the bow is the smile it brings when it’s opened
A
dmit it: you’re fun-deprived at the moment. If you’re like most people, you’re a little exhausted from dealing with the ups and downs of the last year. For that reason, many housewares designers and retailers say they’re seeing an upsurge of interest in colorful, whimsical housewares items this holiday season Grim functionality is out, a relic of the high-tech years when housewares designers assumed that consumers wanted their kitchens to look like scientific laboratories. (It went with the whole “I’m too busy with my fabulous career to spend time in the kitchen” ethos of the period.) Instead, how about a salt and pepper set in the form of two ceramic monkeys sitting in a boat shaped like a banana? “People want colorful, playful things right now,” says Paolo Crevedi, North American director of Alessi, the well-known Italian housewares firm and designer of the abovementioned salt and pepper set. “They want to be cheered up.” Indeed they do. And designers are responding with an outpouring of new products,
many in eye-popping colors not seen in many years. “In a year where there was a lot of not-great news, color and whimsy serve as little pick-me-ups,” says Carrie Peterson, Zak Designs. “They make the kitchen a happier place.” “We believe in products that make people smile,” Crevedi says. “They create optimism and a sense of connection, which we all need right now.” Alessi, for example, works with about 200 artists around the world on products that range from basic and utilitarian to far more fanciful items. An example of the latter impulse is the company’s new “Chin Family” line of kitchen items, which are inspired by antiquities in the National Palace Museum in Taiwan as interpreted by artist Stefano Giovannoni. The line includes salt and pepper shakers, a spice grinder, refrigerator magnets, a kitchen timer and a citrus squeezer, all executed in brightly colored plastic and incorporating smiling Asian figurines. Several different color trends are operating in housewares at the moment. One is the overall importance of red. “Housewares used to cycle in and out of red every five years or so but today red is a basic almost like black and white,” Peterson says. Green is also coming on strong, aided by everything from the current interest in eco-friendly “green” design to Hollywood movies. In the past year, for example, the film “Julie & Julia,” which recounted the early days of beloved author and chef Julia Child, ignited a trend for the Emile Henry line of vintage green baking dishes.

Finally, two colors that have been popular in Europe in recent years – yellow and orange – are starting to make their way into the American market. “There’s a big push for yellow right now, Peterson says. “Yellow has traditionally been more of an accent color than a primary color. But it’s very cheerful, so maybe the time is right for yellow. Zak Design manufactures a wide variety of kitchen and tabletop items, which it divides into various collections according to color. The Pop collection, for example, features numerous mixing bowls, colanders, measuring cups, spoons and trays in vibrant colors such as red, orange, yellow and magenta. The recent interest in color and whimsy recalls another period of economic turbulence, namely the 1930s and 40s when colorful, affordable dinnerware lines like Fiestaware and Franciscanware first came on the market. “Traditionally, dinnerware was a stack of identical plates with maybe an ornamental border around the rim, says Tim Samuelson, author and house-
wares historian. “But with Fiestaware, you could pick and choose and have everything be a different color. It was a revolutionary step. Fiestaware originally came in five colors: red, blue, yellow, green and old ivory or cream. Today, however, there are nearly 40 colors, For all the emphasis on color and whimsy, however, functionality remains key. “I still think functionality comes first, Peterson says. “If something doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, it doesn’t matter how cute it is. It goes right into the closet and stays there. Joseph Joseph, the innovative British housewares firm founded by brothers Antony and Richard Joseph, manages to combine both qualities. The company made its name with a line of sleek, Modernistic kitchen items, but it recently introduced a new line of tempered glass food preparation work surfaces that are adorned with witty portraits of celebrities such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Queen Elizabeth as vividly colored raw vegetables. “Function remains key, says Antony Joseph, one half of the brother duo responsible for Joseph Joseph. “Function is where you start. A Tale of Two Gifts Wrap perfect, wrap eco – and do it all stress-free with these expert tips You’ve spent hours stressing, wracking your brain for ideas and picking out gifts. But now that you’ve walked home with your treasures, your gifts are going to need a little bit of your “wrapped” attention. The materials First, find a good place to wrap your gifts. Don’t sit on the ground, says Lisa Gleeson, owner of Lisa’s Gift Wrappers in Royal Oak, Mich., where you’re likely to strain or hurt your neck. Instead, try the island in your kitchen, or get out your ironing board. Next, pull out your wrapping supplies. Gleeson recommends saving up for good-quality scissors like Fiskars. “Dull scissors make cutting ribbon nearly impossible,” she says. If your scissors are covered in goop or tape from another project, use some Goo Gone to get them back to pristine condition. Gleeson recommends double-sided tape or sewing tape, though single-sided tape will work fine as well. Look for wrapping paper sales around Thanksgiving to stock up on good paper that’s
Bitterroot Holiday, Ravalli Republic, November 26, 2009, Page 7
easier to cut and fold. Check out sales for ribbon and bows, too. Going green The greenest way to wrap a present is to just give it as-is, says Jennifer Basye Sander, co-author of “Green Christmas: How to Have a Joyous, Eco-Friendly Holiday Season” (Adams, 2008). “Don’t wrap presents that go in stockings,” Sander says. “Tie small presents to the tree, and use an empty cereal box or a basket for kids toys or books.” If you want to camouflage your presents in an eco-friendly way, cover your gifts in a reusable material like fabric, brown paper bags, or old newspapers. Look for wrapping paper made from recycled materials from specialty wrapping shops or online at www. greeneventshop.com. How to wrap like a pro Place your box lid down near one of the short edges of your wrapping paper, making sure that the box lies square to the paper. To determine how much paper you’ll need on either short side of the box, use your fingers to measure the width of the box. Measure out that length from the box to either side of the long edge of the paper, adding another finger’s length to give you a little
extra. “For instance, if the box width takes three fingers, measure out four fingers worth of paper for each side,” Gleeson says. With the box along one of the short edges of the paper, fold the paper edge nearest to the box up approximately 1-1/2 inches to 2 inches over the box. Tape the paper to the box with single-sided tape. Bring the other end of the paper over to the edge of the box. Using the edge, crease the paper so that it folds under itself, forming a perfectly straight edge. Tape the paper into place. Then place several pieces of doublesided adhesive tape along the paper fold. Bring the taped fold to the edge of your box where the other end of the paper has been taped down. Make sure everything is aligned before pressing the fold to the box. For the sides, fold the paper over the end of the box, creasing the paper where it meets the bottom of the box. Cut off the extra length from your top flap. Place a piece of double-sided tape on either flap so that it sticks to itself. Where the bottom flap makes a triangle, fold over the tip of the triangle to form a straight edge. Bring the flap over to the bottom of the box and tape into place. You should be able to run your finger over the edge of your present and feel that it is even with the box.
To make a bow, wrap your ribbon over, under and back over the long end of the present so that there are two parallel lines of ribbon. Turn the box and twist the ribbon before carrying the loose end under the box and around to the top again. Tuck the loose end over and under the crossed ribbon. Then tie a bow like you would to tie your shoes. Fold your ribbon in half, edge to edge. Angle your scissors and cut the ribbon. Do the other side. This will leave a notch end to your ribbon. Just make sure to leave enough so you can be creative without facing a strict deadline. “You’ve put all that time into picking a perfect gift,” Gleeson says. “You have to leave enough time to wrap it, too.” Green finishing touches Add silk flowers or a sprig of holly from outside. Make gift cards out of scraps of wrapping paper. Fold an index card in half and tape or glue wrapping paper over one side. Ask for friends and family to give you bows or ribbon for next year. To keep presents straight without using tags, wrap each child’s presents in a different kind of wrapping paper. Add flowers or sprigs of holly from outside. © CTW Features

Get Your Gifts Home for the Holidays
With families spread out all over the country, shipping holiday gifts to loved ones is a part of the season’s traditions. And while Santa has done an admirable job of delivering holiday cheer for many seasons, he often gets an assist from helpers like Bill Yelle, a UPS driver for more than 16 years. “I might not have a long white beard and wear a bright red suit, says Yelle, “but it’s always fun to see the smile on a customer’s face when I arrive with packages during the holidays. And I don’t want to brag, but I think the children like the big brown truck as much as Santa’s sleigh. To help your special gifts arrive intact and on time, there are a few simple things you can do. Use the Right Packing Materials. Use what the professionals use – sturdy, corrugated boxes, foam packaging peanuts and bubble pack – to protect your gifts. Leave enough space between items in the box, and wrap individual items with double cushioning if necessary. Allow at least two inches on all sides of the items being packed, including the bottom and the top. Place the item in the center of the box and fill the remaining space with additional packaging material. Check With the Experts. If you have fragile or unusually shaped items to ship, or you just don’t have the time to get your packing and shipping done, it can pay to turn to the pros. “I love this time of year, says The UPS Store owner Mary Hart. “We put so much effort into helping our customers ship their holiday gifts that we share their sense of excitement. We firmly

Bitterroot Holiday, Ravalli Republic, November 26, 2009, Page 9 believe the same care should go into shipping gifts as into selecting them. For the do-it-yourselfers, Hart offers these simple tips: Holiday Shipping DOs and DON’Ts DO include an address label on the inside of the package with both the destination and return addresses. DO use a shipping option which provides a package-tracking number. DO take batteries out of toys, electronics, etc., before shipping. DO ship wrapped presents ahead to your destination, especially if traveling by air. DON’T wrap boxes in brown paper or tie with string. DON’T use materials like newspaper or real popcorn to cushion items. DON’T use old boxes or gift boxes for shipping items. DON’T use duct tape, masking tape or cellophane tape to seal your boxes for shipping. DON’T ship perfume or cologne since they are considered hazardous materials. Hart has had to perform a package intervention or two during her 25 years in the business. “People should never be embarrassed to ask for help, she says. “We’re specially trained and certified packing professionals. We can handle any shipping job. One other essential thing to do – be an early bird. Waiting too long to ship packages can jeopardize their timely arrival and cost you a lot more money. Having to ship items via air takes a lot more out of your wallet, so plan ahead. For more packing tips and to find a The UPS Store near you, visit www. theupsstore.com. The Featured Cut Rib roast, often referred to as “prime rib” or “standing rib roast,” is the grand champion of beef roasts, combining rich flavor, juicy tenderness and spectacular appearance. As with all beef cuts, rib roast is a powerhouse of protein, considered an excellent or good source of 10 nutrients. “A full rib roast contains seven ribs, but is often sold in smaller sizes. To determine how much to buy, estimate 2-1/2 servings per pound,” says Chef Dave Zino, executive director of the Culinary Center for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. “Overall, the secret to success when preparing a beef roast is knowing when the desired degree of doneness is reached. Your best gauge is a reliable ovenproof meat thermometer.”
Rib Roast: Beef 101 Family Features
Three Easy Steps Step 1: Remove beef from refrigerator and rub entire surface with preferred seasonings. Step 2: Place roast in a shallow roasting pan, fat side up, in a preheated 350°F oven. A rack is not needed since the curved rib bones act as a natural rack. Insert ovenproof meat thermometer. Do not add water. Do not cover.
A beautiful beef roast makes an impressive and delicious centerpiece for any special occasion. Best of all, this show-stopping main course is surprisingly easy to make and serve.

Light Up Your Home for the Holidays (Family Features)
Nothing captures the warmth of the holidays quite like the gentle glow of candlelight. This season, set the mood with delicious holiday scents and decorations by making fragrance your centerpiece. Mom and lifestyle expert Amy Clark says, “I love adding candles to my mantle or dining room table to create a cozy atmosphere.” She suggests using the new Glade® Candles Holiday Collection in Apple Cinnamon or limited-edition Bayberry Spice scents. “These seasonal fragrances will transform your home into a haven for you and your guests,” says Clark. “They are an elegant and affordable way to add that extra little touch to your holiday décor.” Clark offers up simple tips to help you light up your home for the holidays with welldesigned displays at an affordable price. Choose a Festive Space Holiday centerpieces on the dining room table are a beautiful tradition. But don’t limit your creativity to just one place. Look around

your house for other areas you can dress up for the season, including the: • Mantle • Inside of the fireplace or on the hearth • Entry table • Bathroom • Kitchen A good rule of thumb is to take up no more than one-third of a table with your display, unless the table won’t be used for anything else. This will leave room for people to set down items without bumping into the display. Cover Your Bases For surfaces that need to be protected from candle oils, heat and wax, choose an interesting base for the display. Trays, beveled mirrors and candle plates are often used. If you are feeling creative, purchase Epsom salts from the local discount store to spread around the mirror, creating a snowscape look.

Bitterroot Holiday, Ravalli Republic, November 26, 2009, Page 17 Candle Groupings Many designers believe that odd-numbered groupings are more pleasing to the eye than even-numbered ones. So gather candles in groups of three, five or seven. If you plan to display a single line of candles, down the center of a table for example, purchase candles of varying heights and widths for a more interesting display. If you don’t have different sized candles, create different levels with cake stands or other household items.
Hostess Gifts on Hand An easy way to ensure that you have a great hostess gift is to keep a gift closet. This will help you easily pull together a thoughtful gift when you are invited to a last minute event. Giving the gift of scent is an excellent way to show a hostess that you appreciate her. Put together a cozy gift bag with Glade Scented Oil Candles in Apple Cinnamon, a homemade scarf, bubble bath or a few of your favorite holiday recipes. Keeping these items at your fingertips ensures you will give a beautiful gift your hostess will love.
Creative Touches You don’t need to buy a lot of extras to make an attractive display. Look through what you already have to get inspired. Some things to look for: • Ornaments • Holiday books • Fabrics and ribbon • Confetti and beads • Old holiday cards • Natural elements, such as pine cones, greenery, interesting branches or stones Dress up candles by placing candy canes or cinnamon sticks around the display at a safe distance from the candle. With a little imagination, you can create holiday displays that make you feel a little merrier all season long.
Scents-able Advice According to the National Candle Association, scent is the most important factor for people when buying candles. Fragrant candles are a great way to add even more holiday cheer to your displays and all throughout the house. The Glade Candles Holiday Collection is an easy way to bring holiday cheer into your home. Just light the candle’s wick to release your favorite seasonal scents into the air, creating a warm holiday atmosphere. Popular holiday fragrances include the new Glade limited-edition Bayberry Spice scent or classic Apple Cinnamon. here are ornaments that go on the tree year after year. You can ask anyone about their favorite, or most meaningful, or oldest ornament and almost always get an interesting story. My Grandmother has Christmas ornaments from the year my father was born. My father is 70. My Mother has ornaments I made when I was a kid. I particularly remember a bell, made out of simple flour, salt and water dough, baked and painted with stripes. I know I made it; I don’t remember when, but it comes out of the box and gets put on the tree every year. I have started my own collection. I started from scratch, so every little bauble I was given on Christmas became an ornament. Now, I have added my children’s handmade offerings to my collection. I hope teachers never stop providing the materials and opportunity for kids to make them. Along with handmade ornaments from the kids, my family always places glass ornaments from my grandmother’s tree, the felt, stuffed ornaments my mom and my aunt made when I was a baby, and all the ornaments we have been given by friends and family over the years. I don’t think there is one ornament without a story, and I hope my tree will be the same when I have grown kids and grandchildren. I’ll take each one out of the storage box and remember when it was new. This year, I think my 5 year old son and I will make some bells and other shapes out of dough and paint them.

BAKER’S CLAY Most “dough art” projects are made from baker’s clay - it can be cut, shaped, stamped, forced through a cookie or garlic press, and it rarely cracks while drying. It is the dough of choice for ornaments. Be prepared for a small amount of puffing and distortion during the baking process; each piece will be slightly different from every other one. By decreasing or increasing baking time, uncolored pieces can range from pale ivory to deep brown. When the baked piece is cool, paint with acrylics as desired. Brush or spray on a finishing coat of polyurethane to seal and protect piece.
Recipe 4 cups white flour 1 cup salt 1 1/2 cups water Paste food coloring (optional) Mix flour and salt in bowl until well blended and smooth. Add 1/2 cup of water and continue to mix for a few minutes. Slowly add remaining water while turning the dough in the bowl. Gather the dough in a ball, working in any dry flour and salt left at the bottom of the bowl. Knead dough for about five minutes. Knead in food coloring if desired. Shape dough, as desired, and place on a foil-covered cookie sheet. Bake in a 250-300 degree F (120-150 degree C) oven until hard (about five minutes for 1”-2” pieces).

get the best tree possible, and manage the forest for years to come: • Taking a tree from an overcrowded area will give the remaining trees more space, moisture and light to grow. • Cutting is not allowed in tree plantations, previously thinned areas, and restricted areas such as developed recreation sites and existing timber sale areas. • Please do not cut out the top of a tree or leave a stump higher than eight inches. • Be sure you are cutting your tree on National Forest Land. Maps of the National Forest may be purchased at any Forest Service office. • Take a vehicle equipped for winter conditions with 4-wheel drive, snow tires or chains and start early since winter days are shorter. Keep a watchful eye for snowmobiles and other recreationists walking, skiing or sledding on back roads. • If the tree won’t be set up right away, store it in a cool area. When you’re ready to bring it indoors, cut at least an inch off the bottom. The tree will be thirsty so make sure there is always plenty of water in the tree stand. This will prolong the life of the tree through the holidays. For more information, call the Bitterroot National Forest at 363-7100.

Families get together during the Holidays. For some it is stressful, for some it is a once a year joy. This year, use that time to catalog your family history. What a perfect time to sit down with your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, even parents, with coffee, wine, cocoa, and a tape recorder and preserve your history. Maybe even bring the recorder to the dinner table, and use the following list of questions as a starting point for a discussion as to how you, and your family, arrived in the places they are now.
