Public to get first look at MDMH new ICU Friday By PERRY BACKUS Ravalli Republic

The difference between Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital’s old and soon-to-be unveiled Intensive Care Unit is like night and day. The old 492-square-foot ICU consists of three beds separated by curtains in a relatively small room with only a single window to the outside. It’s changed little since it was first commissioned in 1975. In the near future, patients requiring intensive care will have a totally different experience in the hospital’s new 9,470-square-foot intensive care unit that features five separate rooms equipped

with state-of-the-art technology. Each room has its own large window that floods the space with natural light. The patient will be able to choose to lower light diffusing or blackout shades from their bed. Outside the rooms that are lined a row, there is a nurses station that runs the length of the ICU. It too is filled with natural light from a large bank of windows that run along the edge of the high ceilings. The space’s architect, Marty Noyd, providing natural lighting was a key component in the building’s design. “Studies show that patients exposed to natural light heal faster,

Noyd said. “It’s also important for the medical professionals who work in the space. It helps them be more attentive. Everyone likes to be able to see what the weather is doing outside.” The design of the $3.2 million addition was the result of an 18-month-long planning process that included input from the physicians and nurses who will work in the new facility. “We used a process similar to what we used to design the ER,” Noyd said. “The design was done in collaboration with the administrative staff, physicians and nurses. We worked to incorporate their suggestions into the architectural design. We wanted to ensure the space was designed in a way that worked best for both medical staff and patients.”

The process for designing the new ICU was done in collaboration with the administrative staff, physicians and nurses, similar to the way the ER was designed.

For instance, Noyd said there are low level lights installed in each of the rooms so medical staff can find their way after dark after patients turn off the overhead lights. Another example is the space allowed between the nurse’s station and the bank of rooms that are closed off by glass doors. “We wanted to ensure there was enough adequate room for emergencies,” Noyd said. “When a code happens, it’s important that there is enough space for those emergencies to be addressed without being congested.” Hospital CEO John Bartos said the new ICU rooms are about 25 percent larger than other rooms in the hospital to provide space needed to bring in any medical equipment necessary to treat the patient. The additional space in the rooms will also be important when family and others come to visit patients in the ICU. The technology built into each room will make it possible for the patient to be monitored by staff in the ICU and at the main desk in another part of the hospital. “That dual coverage will be important at times when ICU nurses are working in one room and have patients in another rooms,” Bartos said. “Those other patients will be monitored continuously.” The new ICU has an isolation room where it’s possible to have both negative and positive air pressure and a bariatric room to treat large people. The new facility also includes a waiting room that is divided into two separate pods and a consultation room where physicians and family can meet privately. Both rooms can be accessed by the public without entering the new ICU. Construction started on the new ICU in December 2013. On Friday, Jan. 23, the hospital will host a grand opening cer-

emony for the new ICU starting at 1 p.m. There will be a keynote address at 1:15 p.m., followed by tours of the new facility through 3:30 p.m. Visitors are asked to enter through the hospital’s main entrance. The ICU is the second to the last project that was outlined in a facility master plan completed almost 20 years ago. “This was an important project for us to address the needs of our patients here at the hospital,” Bartos said. Dr. Mitchell Marzo has worked under the difficult conditions found in the old ICU. “This will mark a major in care for our patients and their families,” Marzo said. “In the old ICU, it wasn’t easy for family members to come for a visit. There was no privacy for any kind of discussion. “Mental wellness plays a large role in medicine,” Marzo said. “I think this will be a major advancement for this community.”
