Newspapers in Education is an international program that promotes and increases our children’s literacy by using the newspaper as a teaching tool. NIE is a unique way for schools, businesses and the local newspaper to work together in a partnership that benefits all of us - now and in the future. Through the use of daily news, editorial, features and even advertising, students at all grade levels can learn math and cost comparison skills, geography and meteorology, history and current events and how they shape our world, all while improving reading and comprehension. The NIE program helps motivate and teach students with a textbook as fresh as each day’s news.

7th grade Editorials Dear, editor My name is Kate Gannon and I have a solution for better grades better attendance and better schooling over all! My idea is that we give students the power to choose their teachers and who teaches what. This way kids will do better in school and want to come to school. This would solve numerous amounts of problems in the schools in the Bitterroot Valley. And this is why you should listen to me because I know that the biggest thing most adults care about are their kids. Most kids hate school and don’t want to go to college or want to drop out of school
and these are the people that will be taking care of you when you get old. This is why you need to help to make this possible and it would also push teachers to do their best because if they don’t, they won’t get payed.so teachers will be trying to do their best always and with a customisable grade, kids will be on the top of their game. And so will the teachers be on top of their game! Kate Gannon Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School School Lockers The Hamilton Middle School
needs new lockers. Many of the lockers are damaged. If you go upstairs and look around you will notice in the sixth grade hall half of the lockers are bigger and half are smaller. There is also a locker with no door. In sixth grade, many of the lockers also don’t open as easily as the others. This causes many students to be late for class, making them frustrated. Most of the students even avoid locking the lockers to cut down on time during passing period. This can sometimes result in other people getting in our lockers and stealing personal property. Some of the lockers don’t even have hooks
to hang coats and backpacks on. So the students that don’t have hooks often don’t have enough space in the lockers. emember many kids arguing because they had a smaller locker than their friends. There is also sharp dents that stick out on the inside. These dents could injure someone. They have caused rips in the coats, backpacks, and other personal property. Thank you for listening to what I have to say. Sincerely, Taylee Conley Taylee Conley Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School

My name is Brooklyn Brown, I go to Hamilton Middle School. Homework has always been a problem with students. If all teachers assigned homework on the same day and it was all assigned on the same day, this would be less of a problem. This would make students less likely to forget if they have homework. Parent would also know if the student have homework, this would cause procrastination to happen less often. This will cause students to be more responsible. Students would also know if they can have plans for a night. This system of homework would have lots of benefits. Kids would know if they have homework or not. This would lead to students going to more school games and activities, This would lead to the school getting more money from concessions and paying to get in. It would also lead to less questions in class leaving time for homework. Students will also be able to balance their homework and sports more knowing when the homework is due. This would also be great if students are confused on there homework. Then they can ask questions the next day instead of on the day the homework is due. Brooklyn Brown Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School
Hello my name is Jorja Aspell. Skate parks are a fun place to be. But with 64,000 kids between the ages of 5-19 injured in The United States, it seems like skateboarding is becoming a dangerous sport. With the recent injuries in our Hamilton skatepark people are already trying to get rid of our skate park. But skate parks can be good for the entire town, even if they don’t skate. So we should have more safety rules enforced at skate parks so hopefully that number drops and people can enjoy our skate park. Most kids now skateboard without helmets, or any protection at all. Even if you are a pro skater you are gonna fall at least once. So a kid who does it on their free time is bound to have a few falls. With many falls they can lead from getting a scratch on your knee to cracking your head open. So there should be more supervision at skate parks so anyone who skates can be safe. With more safety rules enforced at skate parks, people will stop trying to take them down. Jorja Aspell Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School Dear Editor, Hello my name is Alexis Treece and I am a 7th grader at Hamilton Middle School. I feel that
HMS students need a longer lunch than what we have now. When deciding an appropriate lunch period you need to take into consideration the amount of time to gel to our lockers, grab our stuff, get to the cafeteria, get hot lunch if needed and use restrooms. By thalli me we should have approximately 10 to 15 minutes to eat our food. That is how much time we have to do all of that. It has been proven to affect our health negatively by eating to quickly. Since we don’t have a long lunch and we still want to socialize food is being wasted that our school purchases. So then some students take a smaller lunch to finish it all. By doing so they do not get enough to eat and they don’t have enough energy to get through the day. Also when we are eating it gives the teachers a break to eat and prepare for the next class. And a break from us in general. Even if we could just lake off 5 minutes from our recess, it would benefit us all greatly. Alexis Treece Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School Dear editor, I would like to address to you about Cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is online bullying that needs to stop. HMS needs to do a better job of preventing
it. The domain of school stops when the bell rings. Therefore, the school does not have the power to stop it at 3:15. So, kids need to tell a parent or guardian at home about, what is happening or going on. I am not saying HMS doesn’t try to prevent it. I’m saying think before your actions because a suicide is proven to happen with 5% overall population. This is why Cyberbullying attacks need to stop! It is proven that there are 3-10 Cyberbullying attacks per second and 260,000-864,000 attacks per day all around the world. Kids at HMS are hurting because of cyberbullying and bullying. So, someone needs to stand up and put a stop on cyberbullying! If you or one of your friends are being Cyberbullied tell someone. Don’t respond to the message and you need to report it. Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it or, creating a safe zone to discuss it. Sincerely, Madi Nelson Madi Nelson Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School Dear Editor, I would like to present to you the problem at HMS with round tables. I believe that
Ravalli Republic, Wednesday, March 6, 2019 - 5
7th grade Editorials HMS should decide to get rectangular tables instead. The problem is that with the round tables they limit the amount of people to a table. This excludes and leaves people out and here at HMS we don’t do that. Also, rectangular tables help with traffic flow. By this, I mean that with the round tables it makes it harder to move around the cafeteria. With the rectangular tables, there are rows to walk straight through to get around and sit down. Our principal, Mr. Lewis, and our vice principal, Mrs. Dickerson, limits the amount of people to a table. For example, In 6th grade there are only six students aloud
to a table. In 7th grade only seven people to a table and in 8th eight at a table. When adding more people it gets crowded! If we exchange the round tables for rectangular tables, we can be less crowded and have rnore room to eat. Plus, we won’t get in trouble for having to many at a table. Sincerely, Morgan Gurney Morgan Gurney Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School Extend School Sports Dear editor, HMS needs a longer season for football this year, the school only had six games. The basketball season was
longer than the football season. This year the basketball season had ten games. Kids who haven’t played football before would get more practice with a longer season, and when they get into high school they won’t have enough practice to play on the high school team. When there are kids who haven’t played before, the longer season would give them more experience before they wouldn’t play again. And student’s would try harder to get good grades to play in school sports because the school season is short so they will try to participate in school sports. Parents will get angry at the coaches because
Jovielle Jessop, Grade 4, Mrs. BoGan, Corvallis priMary
their son isn’t playing football. The coaches will just have to say that your son isn’t good enough to play in high school football and the student will live the rest of his life thinking he can’t play football. I’m in seventh grade and in order to play in high school you need more practice than what they are teaching in middle school and so HMS needs a longer football season because we need better players for HHS. Sincerely: Andrew Burrows Andrew Burrows Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School Dear Editor, I think we should start school later in the day because of many reasons
6 - Ravalli Republic, Wednesday, March 6, 2019
7th grade Editorials which are, first, kids could be more energetic and ready for school. Secondly, if school wasn’t so early, then more kids might be at school on time and not everyone are early birds. Lastly, the teachers might teach better when it is later in the day. Students can learn better if their brains are wide awake and ready to get taught new things. Also, There might be more activities in, before, and after school, and that can make school more enjoyable. We will still learn what we need to learn, but more kids will be excited to go there. In addition, people might be able to eat their
breakfast on time and they can more than likely to take their time to eat. We can also might be able to take our time getting ready and look decent. Those are the reasons why I think we should start school later in the day. Maryanne Whitman-Darnell Mr. Sparks Hamilton Middle School Dear Editor, Hamilton Middle School needs a better playground. Our current playground is a small cage with concrete surface and metal fencing. There are only basketball hoops. There is no grass, no swings, no games areas or
fields with sports equipment. For growing children, they need exercise and as much activity as possible. Only 8 percent of 12 to 19 year olds reach the recommended hour per day of exercise. Now we also have 5th graders at our school who also need physical activity. Playgrounds are supposed to promote physical activity not limit it. Due to hard surfaces, our playground is dangerous. Many kids get injuries ranging from scrapes to broken arms. Sports like football and soccer are dangerous and boring on concrete. Playgrounds give a break for kids after intense classes. A
better playground provides a better break. Kids have been proven to be more active on grass than on concrete. Grass would be a solution, but that may not be an option because of cost and limited space. Whatever the solution, we need to improve the playground at HMS. Playgrounds are important for developing kids. Playgrounds affect activeness, mental health and safety. Please, don’t sell Hamilton’s kids short. 4th grade Editorials My World The best place in Montana is the Daly Mansion because it is super pretty. It gets the most colorful in Fall. You can go inside if you want to. It has a really good view. It is near Hamilton. In Fall you kids can jump in the leaf piles. I believe that you should visit Montana because it’s my home. JaKay Venema Mrs. Bogan Corvallis Priamry Why I think Montana is the best I think that Montana is the best place to live because Montana has amazing things
to see and do. In Corvallis there is not a lot of traffic and you can just relax. There is a Merc where you can buy food, toys, jewelry, cooking supplies, and many other cool stuff. There isa subway and a carwash, it is easy to start a business. There is also an amazing High School and primary school. If you go down the road you will see Stevensville there is a little more traffic, but it’s bigger than Corvallis. There is an amazing dance studio where you can do Jazz, Tap, Zumba (fitness) and many more. If you go some more there is Victor. In fall they have an activity
called the field of screams it is pretty scar. Then a couple hours away is Missoula. It is way bigger than any of the places that I said. It has many houses and many stores. But there is a LOT of traffic. But it is amazing! There is so much camping room and nature is everywhere. That is why I love Montana. Sierra Lee Mrs. Bogan Corvallis Primary The Bitterroot Valley I think the Bitterroot Valley is a great place to live. One reason why is there is wildlife like deer, elk and moose.
The next reason why is it is peacefu l.lt is peacefu I because there are not too many people. The third reason why is it has seasons. One is Summer. That’s when it gets really hot and you get to go swimming. Then fall when it is chilly but not too cold and the leaves fall down. After that it’s winter when it is cold and there is snow. Last it’s spring when the flowers bloom and everything is pretty. That is why you should live in the Bitterroot Valley Jeremy Davidson Mrs. Healy Corvallis Primary

Why is it Good to Live in the Bitterroot Valley? I am glad I live in the Bitterroot Valley because it is peaceful. I live in California the first eight years of my life and it was very loud! When my brother and I tried sleeping there would be commotions like Mexican parades going down the street in front of our house. So the first reason I think the Bitterroot Valley is a good place to live is that there is only a little bit of traffic. The second reason it’s a great place to is that there are clean rivers and lakes. In the summer you can go swimming when it is hot, or if
you do not have a swimming pool. You could also go camping in the mountains, which I think is fun. The third reason is the schools. I go to Corvallis, and I like it there. The teachers are nice. The hot lunches are ok, I guess. I live in Victor. My class has a pet. His name is Louis, but my class just calls him Loui for short. I am glad that my family moved to the Bitterroot Valley. I love the peacefulness, the nature, and the schools! Solstice Rakitin Corvallis Primary School Miss Jameson
Why you should live in the Bitterroot Valley! My opinion is that it is good to live in the Bitterroot Valley! My name is Justice Jessop, and I’ve lived here for about a decade. I’m 10 years old, and all the years I’ve been living here with my family have been really great! One reason I like living here is because there are beautiful skies and lots of nature. For example, I one morning I saw one of the most beautiful skies I’ve ever seen. I was watching a movie in my living room and looked outside my window. Suddenly, a beautiful pink,
purple, and orange morning sky appeared. It was so beautiful. I went to tell my sister and parents, and then we all sat and watched the sky together. Another reason I think the Bitterroot is so great is because there is a very low crime rate. All my life I have only heard of one crime. It happened at the Eagle’s Lodge. My class at school agrees too! And that is all! That is why I love living in the Bitterroot Valley. Justice Jessop Corvallis Primary School Miss Jameson’s

The Bitterroot Valley is a Good Place to Live I was born in Iowa but I moved around a lot until my family settled down in the Bitterroot Valley. It is a good place to live. There are a lot of reasons to live here, like low crime, small, quiet towns, and many people who were born with differences are accepted here. You can also make friends with other people. Another reason to live here is that in the summer we have good places to go camping. If you, or your children are going to our schools, don’t be worried because we have good schools and teachers for
you. If you are looking for a place to live. Live in the Bitterroot Valley! It is the best place you could live! Come here as soon as possible! David Marston Corvallis Primary School Miss Jameson The Bitterroot Valley I think the Bitterroot Valley is a spectacular place to live .First, the Bitterroot Valley has very low crime. Some people even sleep with their doors unlocked! Next, You could never run out of things to do. You could go huntin g,fishing, hiking, rafting, and very much more!Lastly, the schools in the Bitterroot there
are a lot of good schools. For an example I go to Corvallis Primary and I think it is the best school in the world! Some people say that the Bitterroot Valley is too far away from the ocean But, you can go swimming or to the beach at Flathead Lake or Lake Como! This is why I believe the Bitterroot Valley is a great place to live. William Hart Corvallis Primary School Mrs. Studer The Bitterroot Valley I think the Bitterroot valley is a great place to live. First, there’s lots fo fun sports like snowboarding and skiing or rock climbing. Next there
is lots of good hot springs. Lastly, we are very close to national parks like Glacier National Park or Yellowstone National Park. Some people say it is very cold, but you can put on a jacket. This is why I believe the Bitterroot valley is a great place to live. Olivia Potter Corvallis Primary School Mrs. Studer Bitterroot Valley I think that you should live in the Bitterroot these are some reasons why. First, there’s a lot of animals and sometimes when you’re driving it’s nice to see some animals on the way. Next,

hunting is really good in the Valley because there is a lot of animals and easy to find a deer or an elk. Lastly, there’s a lot of great views in the Bitterroot. Just go outside go on a hike or go bike a mountain or a hill. Some people say there’s a lot of crime in the world but not here really and that makes this place great! This is why I believe the Bitterroot Valley is a wonderful place. Hogan Buhler Corvallis Primary School Mrs. Studer The Bitterroot Valley I think the Bitterroot Valley is a great place to live in. First, the view is amazing. For an example say you would
hike up a mountain and when you look down you will see an amazing view. Then, a lot of people are friendly in the Bitterroot Valley. For an example if you needed to get something they will most likely help you get that thing that you need. Next, there are not a lot of natural disasters around the Bitterroot. For an example there are not tornadoes, floods, tsunami, earthquakes and hurricane. Lastly, the Bitterroot Valley is pretty close to Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. They are both really popular places and there are so much cool things about them. Some people say that there is no ocean in
the Bitterroot Valley but, there are a lot of lakes in the Bitterroot Valley. This is why I believe the Bitterroot Valley is a great place to live in. Beauden Therrien Corvallis Primary Mrs. Studer The Bitterroot Valley is the Best Place to Live I think the Bitterroot Valley is a good place to live because we have nature surrounding us everywhere. I like to watch nature and I like to go hunting. More reasons I like to live here are there aren’t any tornados, there is a small population, we have lots of history, like how the Salish
had their homeland here. Also, there are good doctors, dentists and more. Unfortunately, there are some bad things that happen in the Bitterroot Valley. For example, forest fires burn almost every summer. There have also been earthquakes, but so far they’ve been small and short. Roads can get really slick in the winter, and deer run all over which leads to many car crashes. Although there are some problems in the Bitterroot Valley, I still think it’s a great place to live.
