2015 Ravalli County Fair coming to Hamilton September 2-5 PERRY BACKUS Ravalli Republic
Ravalli County’s harbinger of fall is almost here. Every year, when nights start to linger a bit longer and there is a cool bite to the morning air, thousands of Ravalli County residents make those final little tweaks they hope will lead to a grand
champion ribbon at the county fair. “Every year, we have about 8,000 individual exhibits come through the gate,” said Ravalli County Fair manager Deb Rogala. “This is an event of 10,000 details. There’s so much going on during the days leading up to the fair.” On Sunday, Aug. 30, all of the open class still exhibits will start continued on page 5

continued from page 3 filling the fairgrounds’ exhibit halls. On the Monday following, gardeners with their open floral exhibits will set down their vases in hopes of a good return. Wednesday starts three days of judging livestock, when youngsters from Sula to Florence hope their yearlong efforts of training livestock will pay off in the show ring. There will be entertainment and rodeo action (see accompanying stories) to take in too. “It’s a staggering amount of logistics to pull together, and we couldn’t do it without all our volunteers and staff,” Rogala said. There will be a few changes for people to navigate this year. The large paving project that was completed this year required the relocation of two of the food booths, including the Boy Scouts and huckleberry shakes. At the same time, the Corvallis Methodist Church informed the fair they would be giving up their booth last year. “The Corvallis Methodist Church as been serving cream puffs for longer than anyone can remember,” Rogala said. “We were really sorry to see them go.” The Boy Scouts took over the church’s booth and the huckleberry shakes moved to a new food row along the back of the grandstands. And the Soroptimists agreed to add cream puffs to their menu. “We are happy the Boy Scouts will have a new home and people will be able to get their cream puffs,” she said. There were a couple other changes to the fair food scene. The longtime popcorn wagon closed its doors for the final time last year too, after its owners decided to retire. People looking for barbecue will have a couple of new choices, as Moose Creek and Up and Smoking will open booths. For the first time ever, people wanting to remember the fair during the offseason will have a place to buy fair memorabilia. The fair foundation will be selling T-shirts, ball caps and other memorabilia adorned with the new Ravalli County fair and rodeo logo. Another new event for the fair will be the first-ever gladiola and dahlia flower show that will take place on Friday, following the fair’s traditional floral show. The Five Valleys Dahlia and Gladiola Society will co-sponsor the new show. “They have been a dream to work with,” Rogala said. “We’re really excited to have them here.” The plans call for removing all the traditional floral entries from the exhibit hall Thursday night. Starting Friday morn-

ing, those green thumb types will be encouraged to bring in their finest dahlias and gladiolas to be judged later that day. “I hear there will be hundreds and hundreds of entries from people who are very excited about this new opportunity,” she said. “We’ve installed a misting system in that building to help preserve the blooms. We are constantly looking for ways to make the shows better.” People interested in showing off their colorful dahlia and gladiolas don’t have to register early. They just need to bring their entries through the west gate starting at 7 a.m. Friday. Admission fees to the fair this year are $9 a day and $25 for the season for adults. Students, military and seniors over 60 can get in for $7, or $18 for the season. Once you’re inside, all of the events and shows are free. “Every year, our motto is to make this fair the best Perry backus - Ravalli Republic fair ever,” Rogala said. “That’s what we’ve been Seventeen-month-old Nora Freeman gives a cage filled with rabbits some love at the Ravalli County hearing from people over the last five. They tell us: Fairgrounds. She was helping her mother -- the fair’s rabbit house superintendent Katie Freeman -- check in entries. ‘That was the best fair ever.’ ”

Entertainment for all ages at the fair PERRY BACKUS Ravalli Republic
Ravalli County Fair manager Deb Rogala wants to make sure that everyone who comes to the fair has a chance to see something new. “I want people to experience and see things that they’ve never experienced before,” she said. True to her word, this year’s entertainment line-up for the fair offers something new mixed in with several old favorites. For the first time, the Ravalli County Fair will feature shows by the high-flying BMX Pros Trick Riders. The stunt show features some of the world’s most extreme bicycle stunt riders and skateboarders performing in a spectacular non-stop action show that’s entertained millions around the world, according to the company’s website. The company’s owner-operator, Woody Itson, is one of the founders of freestyle BMX and a former BMX Freestyle champion. “These guys are amazing,” Rogala said. “They do some unbelievable stunts.” The BMX group will host three shows daily during the fair at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. by the fair office.
The Cutest Show on Earth will return after a five-year hiatus. Young actors and actresses from the community will have a chance to take their place on stage in the children’s inactive theater that will put on shows at 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in Mandy Park by the goat barn. “They were really well received when they were here last,” Rogala said. “It’s well done and it really is the cutest show on Earth.” But that’s not the only thing that young fair-goers will be able to enjoy. The Kids’ Pedal Tractor Pull returns this year. “It was a huge hit the last time it was here,” Rogala said. “They are very hard to get. It’s just a wild amount of good fun for the whole family.” That show will take place at 2:30, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. on the new pavement by the maintenance shop. The ever-popular hypnotist Michael Mezmer will bring his TranceNosis show to the fair again this year. “Michael is at the top of his game,” Rogala said. “Everyone

He’s just really phenomenal.” Mezmer will kick off his stay in Hamilton in front of the grandstands on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a show just before the music starts for a teen dance sponsored by Tobacco Free Ravalli County. The dance runs from 8 to 11 p.m., and while its focus is for teens, Rogala said older folks are welcome to join in. “If you’re a teenager at heart, go ahead and attend,” she said. This is her third or fourth appearance here.” Quest will perform under the KLYQ tent at 2 p.m. daily. If people can’t make that show, they should keep an eye out for the cowgirl at 4 and 6 p.m., when she’ll be strolling around the fairgrounds and making people smile. All the entertainment is free after the cost of admission to the fair. “I’ve learned so much about the world of entertainment since I’ve taken this job,” Rogala said. “I so appreciate them all. All of these performers who come here are incredible people. Many are on the road upwards of 40 weeks a year. “Their professionalism is amazing,” she said. “The fair really does offer people a chance to see something new.”

New to the rodeo this year: digital replay PERRY BACKUS Ravalli Republic
Ravalli County has some of the most dedicated rodeo fans that you’ll find anywhere. “Our fans are so loyal that they pack the house every single year,” said Ravalli County Fair manager Deb Rogala. “We wanted to show them how much we appreciate that this year.” To that end, the rodeo committee made arrangements to bring

a 48-foot, big-screen digital replay monitor to the Ravalli County rodeo grounds. It will be mounted on the north side of the arena. “Who doesn’t want to see a bull ride done again?” Rogala said. “It’s going to be awesome. Last year, we had elephants. We wanted to bring something big to this year’s fair too.” When the rodeo action starts to slow, Rogala said that’s when the kiss cam will go to work. “There should be something to watch all the time,” she said. “We wanted to give our fans what they are looking for.” This year’s Bull-A-Rama and Cowboy Bronc Riding event is Thursday, Sept. 3. On the next two nights, people will be able to enjoy all the action of a NRA Rodeo. The events begin at 7 p.m. each night. On Friday and Saturday, fans will also have a chance to see the McMillan Family Trick Riders put

their horse and lariats through their paces on the area floor. “We are thrilled to have them back again this year,” Rogala said. “This is homegrown entertainment. Their parents are stock contractors and trick riding was something they did growing up. Trick riding’s history really fits with this fair.” The rodeo committee was happy to learn the Lyman family’s Jacobs Livestock and Rodeo will again be contracting the stock. “They are great people to work with,” Rogala said. The Ravalli County Fair’s rodeo falls on the last weekend of the NRA regular season. For that reason, it draws some of the finest cowboys and cowgirls who are hoping to get enough points together to make it into the finals. “By that time of the year, the athletes – both stock and the contestants – are pretty banged up,” Rogala said. “They’ve been working hard all summer, but they are still giving it their all.” For those folks who want to gain a better understanding of just what it is like to be a rodeo contestant, the Ravalli County Fair offers a limited number of $40 tickets for a behind-the-chutes tour. The tour offers a unique opportunity for people to spend some time with members of the rodeo committee, rodeo royalty, the stock contractor, and the men and women who participate in the different events. “Everyone who has taken the tour has been really impressed,” Rogala said. “This is the third year we’ve offered it. It offers peo-

ple a chance to learn what it is that judges are looking for and to learn some of the nuances of the sport. It certainly makes rodeo more exciting to watch.” The tickets include the behind-the-chutes tour, a dinner in the VIP tent and a seat in the VIP section. Tickets are for sale at the fair office. Saturday night’s performance will include a tribute to the troops with Theresa Manzella and the crowning of this year’s Miss Ravalli County Rodeo Queen.

A tradition of competition DOMINIC FARRENKOPF for the
Ravalli Republic
The Ravalli County Fair is fraught with tradition – tradition that has brought friends and neighbors together as family for well over 100 years. Arena events like the night shows and rodeo offer the opportunity to gather for quality, wholesome entertainment. The specialty foods offer a variety of delicious choices that are not readily available throughout the year. The carnival rides are often the first introduction to amusement park rides Ravalli County kids are exposed to and provide a thrill no swing set can. Many other traditions abound at the fair, uniting our close-knit community, and perhaps the most treasured tradition is competition. For the lifetime of the Ravalli County Fair, competition has brought neighbors toe to toe in a “bout for blue.” Whether it’s with jams, baked goods, livestock, flowers, vegetables, hobbies, photography or artwork, neighbors are competing and loving every minute of it. Five years ago, another category was introduced to the evergrowing list of competitions at the Ravalli County Fair ... poetry. Local and not-so-local poets enter their original poems for a
chance at stardom ... well, limited stardom. The top 10 semi-finalists in all three age groups will perform their poems on the KLYQ Free Stage on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. The top three poets in K-6 and 7-12 will be awarded all-day carnival ride passes. The top three adults will win Chapter One Bookstore gift certificates. Five local and anonymous judges read each entry, rate it with a point value of 1, 2 or 3 and return the score sheets to the superintendent. All scores are tallied and the poets are notified if they are a semi-finalist. At the reading and award ceremony, poets, their families and friends gather to listen and support each other in what is often a very personal moment. The poems submitted over the past five years have covered a wide array of topics and genres; some humorous, some sorrowful, all personal and captivating. As you make plans to enjoy the 2015 Ravalli County Fair, consider taking in the reciting of poems and award ceremony of the RC Fair Poetry Contest to be held on the KLYQ Free Stage, Thursday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. Dominic Farrenkopf writes a weekly poetry column for the Saturday Ravalli Republic. These Poems Need Homes:
I shifted my weight, swallowed, and then tried to speak. But all I could utter was a pathetic squeak.
I was not on trial as you probably guessed. I recited my poem in a friendly contest.
Fright
Now it was the jury’s turn to shift in their seats. My face was burning as I blushed bright as red beets.
The “jury” was the crowd, my “lawyer” the emcee, though not on trial, I was nervous as could be.
I stood before the panel of judge and jury and their cold, hard, icy stares told me to hurry.
Suddenly my attorney came to my rescue. He broke the ice with a joke and that was my cue.
I finished and they said ‘twas better than all right. I think I handled well... my first case of stage fright.
Jumbled in my mouth, my tongue was a tangled mess. Would any words come out? That was anyone’s guess.
Now my words came out they were loud and clear this time and were delivered with perfect rhythm and rhyme.
Dominic “Flominic” Farrenkopf writes a weekly poetry column for the Saturday Ravalli Republic. He can be reached by email at thesepoemsneedhomes@live.com.
My knees were trembly as I stood in the docket. To ease my nerves I shoved my hand in my pocket.
When it was over the “jury” all applauded. I took a deep bow and from the stage I trotted.
