Zieba for Student Volunteer of the Year DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic CORVALLIS – From delivering the school mail to operating the hallway lunch program, senior Jess Zieba, with his signature cowboy boots and Western shirts, has become an institution in his four years at Corvallis High School. Academic dean Marilyn Suda has gotten to know Zieba closely in his time at the school, and she said he has become very involved in various areas of the school in the last two years. “He has shown substantial achievement during his high school career by focusing on his strengths,” she said. “Jess has worked as a student assistant in the office for two years. The office staff describes him as one of the most diligent and hardworking student assistants that they have ever had. We all respect him so much.” For his efforts throughout the years, Zieba has been selected as the Student Volunteer of the Year for the senior class. Suda said Zieba is also a gifted painter. “Jess is a very talented artist and has provided artwork for the high school office, the principal’s office and the superintendent’s office,” she said. “In addition to taking art classes at Corvallis High School for four years, Jess has taken art lessons outside of school and is a dedicated artist.” She said that Zieba singlehandedly operated the “grab and go” program, where students can get food to take with them in the hallway at noon every day. “The director of food services said that he is so conscientious about his work and always gives 100 percent,” Suda said. “Now that he is graduating, he has taken it upon himself to train next year’s operator. Another responsibility that Jess has maintained throughout high school is transporting and delivering mail throughout the district.” Jess also spends time in the community with Special Olympics as a peer coach and participant, and he enjoys bowling whenever he can. He spends his free time renovating a 1936 Dodge, and Suda said people will probably see his car in a parade one of these days. “Jess is always on the go and wants to do his best at whatever he is doing,” she said. “He mentors other students and is always happy and courteous to everyone. The staff respects Jess for his determination and hard work. Everyone will miss seeing him in the halls of Corvallis High School next year.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

Darby student inspires community DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic DARBY – Of all the seniors graduating this spring in Ravalli County, the most inspirational story belongs to Katie Bell of Darby High School. She has faced more adversity her senior year than any teenager should ever have to face, and yet she has remained a leader in both her school and the community, a role model for any of her peers to look up to. Two months ago, her father passed away after an eight-year battle with cancer. So while the biggest concern on the minds of most high school seniors in March is buying a prom dress or planning summer vacations, Bell was attending a funeral for her dad. In fact, he was the reason she moved to Montana in the first place. “We lived in California, and about eight years ago my father was diagnosed with cancer,” she said. “They told him he had three years to live. He was a professional photographer, and he also owned an international dental equipment manufacturing company. He said Montana was his favorite place to photograph, so that’s why we moved here.” Instead of letting the sadness of her father’s untimely death distract her from her schoolwork, Bell dug right in. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish club, the Model U.N., the Darby Student Council and the Raising Student Voice and Participation club, to name a few. She is set to graduate second in her class, she was a member of the volleyball team and managed the wrestling squad. She’s also one of the students in charge of the graduation ceremony for her senior class. “I’m super busy getting all the bios done and all the awards for teachers and all the schedules right now,” she said. Dealing with the death of her father was the most difficult thing she’s ever had to do, Bell recalls. “It was very challenging,” she said. “I’ve been missing a lot of school. We just went to California to have another service for my father’s friends and family that live out there. So I’ve been scrambling to get all my stuff done. But I take a big role here at the school. I didn’t use any excuses, I just kept going. Maybe that’s why I pushed myself into extracurriculars.” Bell’s mother and older sister helped her through the grieving process as well. “My sister is 21, and she is in the Army National Guard and based in Missoula,” she said. “She’s been able to be home with us a lot the past few months.” This fall, Bell plans to study business at the University of Montana. She hopes to one day work for her family’s company in California. “The business has been in our family for over 50 years,” she said. “Hopefully, when I’m done with school, I will go down there and get a job.” She said she is aware how rare it is for a person her age to be able to lay out a concise and clear plan for her career path. “I’m the kind of person that’s always organized and knows what I’m doing,” she said. This summer, Bell’s mom is going to take her and a friend to some amusement parks in California so they can unwind a little bit. She’s got orientation coming up in June, and she is hoping to make a trip to Hawaii. Still, no matter what happens, the Darby community is always going to hold a special place in her heart. “I think it’s just how people here are nice,” she said. “A lot nicer than in California. People around town say hello to you, and it’s not crazy. It’s a relaxed kind of living.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

Florence grad plans to pursue music DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic FLORENCE – If you hear the phrase “Beskoon the famous bassoonist” many years from now, don’t be shocked. Florence High School senior Logan Beskoon is dedicating himself to the mastery of the bassoon, a woodwind instrument that typically plays music written in the bass and tenor registers. This fall, he is headed to Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc., to study musical performance. And yes, he is aware of the bizarre coincidence that his instrument of choice happens to sound almost exactly like his last name. “Yeah, I thought that was pretty cool too,” he said. “I started playing the bassoon about four years ago. I was bored in band class, and I just picked it up. I liked it right away. There are tough things about it. It’s a clumsy instrument. But it’s not too tough.” Beskoon, who maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout his high school career, said that

Congratulations Kim Lamar! 2012 HHS Graduate

the Florence-Carlton School District prepared him well for life after high school. “I had some great teachers,” he said. “I learned a lot from each class. I think my time here made me a better student and a better person.” Along with earning high marks in school, Beskoon has been active in the community. He has already completed 200 hours of community service through an AmeriCorps program called the Adult Service Corps., and he will volunteer another 100 hours this summer. He has spent time volunteering as a tutor, and he has helped his band director at Florence High School as a teachers’ assistant. He was also a member of the Florence-Carlton High School student council. This summer, he plans on volunteering at the North Valley Public Library in Stevensville. Hamilton grad to study nursing DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic HAMILTON – Sophie Forslund has always been a sucker for the ocean. So when she got a brochure in the mail for the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, she knew her college search was over. “The picture was absolutely gorgeous,” she said. “The campus is right on the ocean. I knew right off the bat that’s where I wanted to go.” It also didn’t hurt that the school offered the Hamilton High School senior a complete financial aid package, including a merit-based scholarship, loans, grants and a work-study program. Forslund already knows she wants to pursue a master’s degree, and she plans to become a nurse. “I’ve always been interested in health sciences,” she said. “And last summer I decided I want to go into nursing. I went to a program called National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. I had wanted to be an obstetrician, but once I realized you have to go through all those years of training, I chose nursing. I want to do other things with my life as well, like having a family and traveling. Nursing will allow me to do what I want with my life and still pursue a career I’m interested in.” Forslund said the Hamilton School District has created some lasting bonds for her. “I’ve had a pretty successful time here,” she said. “I’ve had some really great teachers that have prepared me for all the challenges I’m going to face, and I’ve made a lot of good friends that I will think about when I’m gone.” Going from Montana to the coast of Maine will be a big change, but Forslund said she has some friends that are also attending prestigious schools on that side of the country. “I’ve got a friend going to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and another friend going to NYU, so we can meet up whenever we don’t have enough money to travel home,” she said. “I’m pretty excited.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com. Student receives scholarship to Vassar DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic STEVENSVILLE - It’s a well-known stereotype that scientists aren’t the most articulate public speakers, which is why so many companies have their own public relations staff to do the talking for them. How much validity there is to that stereotype is up for debate, but what isn’t up for debate is that Cheyene Sundberg, a senior at Stevensville High School, won’t be one of those mumbling scientists in a lab coat who can only recite facts or industry jargon. Sundberg, who will attend Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on a full scholarship this fall to study biology and biochemistry, was the captain of the Yellowjackets’ speech and debate squad. She took second place at state in Class A Lincoln Douglas debate, and she consistently placed high in every meet she competed in during her prep forensics career. In fact, she credits her time with the speech and debate team with preparing her for college. “The skills that I learned with the speech and debate team helped me succeed everywhere in school,” she said. “I was always helping plan out the team, competing at meets and meeting a lot of new friends. It was a great experience.” Sundberg got her tuition to Vassar paid for by the Questbridge Scholars program. She hopes to become a biologist or a biochemist one day. “I’ve always been interested in science, and how things work,” she said. “I visited the school a few weeks ago. I’m really excited.” Along with her duties on the speech team, Sundberg is the treasurer of the Key Club, she’s on the student council and the National Honor Society, and she volunteers her time outside of school. She’s donated an enormous amount of time, over 700 hours the last four summers, to the summer reading program at the North Valley Public Library in Stevensville. “I’m really good friends with someone who is involved in the program, so that’s how I got started,” she said. “And I’ve been really inspired by helping the kids read and get into science, which is the point of the project.” Sundberg said that even though it took a lot of her free time, watching young people develop their reading skills is something that has given her great pride over the years. She also said that Stevensville High School prepared her well for her career goals. “Our school really does have some excellent teachers,” she said. “They offer AP courses, which helped me learn and prepare for college. Those accelerated courses are really what helped.” Besides volunteering this summer and getting ready for college, Sundberg said she is hoping to relax and enjoy a visit from her older sister. Ashley named 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar DAVID ERICKSON Ravalli Republic VICTOR – As far as accolades go, it will be hard for any 2012 graduate in the Bitterroot Valley to top Doug Ashley of Victor. Earlier this month, Ashley was named a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of only 141 high school seniors in the country, out of three million graduates, to be selected for the honor. He will travel to Washington, D.C., for a ceremony on June 16. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “To be named one of the top 141 students in the nation, I’m really excited to receive it.” Ashley also has been accepted to attend Princeton University this fall. There, he will study computer science, something he really started getting into six years ago. “I’ve kind of liked the challenge of getting a computer to do what I want it to do,” he said. “I have programmed some software programs and some video games, and my most ambitious project was the What’s New Victor website for the Business Professionals of America, which I did the core programming on as part of a team.” Ashley’s mother, Jo Dees, raised three boys as a single parent, and Doug is the youngest and the first to attend an Ivy League college. He credits a lot of his success to his mom. Ashley also credits Laurie Wildey at Victor High School as his most influential teacher. As part of the Presidential Scholar package, he is allowed to invite Wildey to the ceremony in D.C., where she will also be recognized. Ashley said he understands Princeton is going to be a drastic change from Victor High School, but he still knows he gained valuable experience from his time learning in the Bitterroot. “A lot of the courses in Victor have helped me learn how to work and study and be prepared,” he said. “College is going to be a completely different experience, though.” Reporter David Erickson can be reached at 363-3300 or david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.
