WEATHER Ravalli County weather runs mild to wild, depending on the season and Mother Natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whim. Spring is typically the wettest season in Ravalli County. Rains in May and June, together with melting mountain snow, raise river levels to sometimes dangerous heights. Recreationists should keep careful track of river levels to ensure safety. Springtime temperatures are variable as well, with days peaking in the 40s - or the 60s. Lows are typically in the high 30s to 40s. In Hamilton, precipitation averages about 4.4 inches for the season. Summer weather is drier and warmer than the rest of the year. Precipitation falls to 2.14 inches from July 1 to Aug. 31, according to local weather

experts. Particularly dry years portend forest fires later in the season. Extended day length, with sunset pushed back near 10 p.m., meets highs in the 80s for long, languid days casting for trout on crystal streams, sumptuous hikes to mountain lakes or taking in area cultural events. Nighttime lows in the 40s allow for deep sleep after active days. As summer ends, weather begins to change. Autumn weather can be highly variable, from golden bright days to cold, wet, grey. High temperatures drop back to the 60s and lows fall into the 30s. Mountain snow, melted off in July, begins to accumulate again in October. Autumn precipitation averages 2.34 inches between September 1 and November 15 at Hamilton. Topography and wind, always a factor in mountain weather, play an even more noticeable role in Autumn. Winter brings about 40 inches of snow to

the Bitterroot Valley, with considerably deeper accumulation on slopes and peaks. Lost Trail ski area, at the south end of the county, receives about 300 inches of snow annually. Throughout the valley, daytime highs run from teens to 30s, while nights drop even lower. RAVALLI COUNTY AND GEOGRAPHIC HISTORY Geographic features define Ravalli County. Bordered by the Sapphire Mountains to the east and the Bitterroot range to the west, the county is bisected by the Bitterroot River, which runs its length. The Bitterroot Valley, named for the state flower that once grew plentifully on nearby hillsides, defines the heart of the county. The county seat is Hamilton, located on U.S. Highway 93 about midway through the county. South of Hamilton are the towns of Darby and Sula; north are Stevensville, Victor and Florence. Grantsdale, Pinesdale and Conner are smaller communities within the county. U.S. Highway 93 runs the length of the county. Widened from a dangerous two-lane to four lanes not many years back, the road serves to transport commuting workers as well as visitors to Western Montana. Two national forests, the Lolo and Bitterroot, share management of the county’s vast public land holdings. The Lolo has just 8,884 acres within Ravalli County, but the majority of the Bitterroot National Forest’s 1.6 million acres - 1.1 million acres - lie within county lines. Recreational opportunities, from fishing to camping, hiking and hunting, abound. The county was officially established by the Montana Legislature March 3, 1893, and is named for Father Antony Ravalli, who came to the area in 1845. Father Ravalli worked with the Bitterroot Salish, who requested establishment of St. Mary’s Mission in Stevensville - Montana’s oldest town - in 1841. In 1891, the Salish were removed from the

valley to the Flathead Reservation, about 100 miles north. With white settlement, the Bitterroot’s economy became grounded in agriculture. Apple orchards, grain and hay fields and cattle ranches spread. Copper king Marcus Daly came for logs to supply his Butte mines with needed timber, and built his family a mansion in Hamilton. The mansion still stands, open to the public to discover the splendor of early Bitterroot history. To serve the budding industries, the town of Florence, named for the wife of prominent Missoula businessman A.B. Hammond, was established in the late 1880s as an agricultural rail post. Ravalli County population has grown steadily since 1960, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Currently 40,212 souls call the county home - about 4 percent of the state’s population. The median age of Ravalli County is 46. A quarter of the county’s population is 50-65 years old; 24 percent are over the age of 62. The county is 95.9 percent white, with a statistically equal number of men and women.

In 1850, Major John Owen established the fort as a regional trade center. Period furnishings and artifacts are displayed in the restored barracks. MT-FWP maintains 13 public fishing access sites along the Bitterroot River. Contact the department or check the fwp website for a complete list. • Painted Rocks State Park. 45 miles south of Hamilton. The 293 acres park offers boating, camping and fishing in a pine forest setting. The no-fee park has 25 camping sites, vault toilets and potable water. Pack-in/pack-out is required; there is a 14 day camping limit. Trailers are limited to 25 feet. • Ravalli County Fish and Wildlife Association. P.O. Ravalli County Fish & Wildlife Association began as a sportsmen’s club in 1896 and has worked since that time to sustain the natural resources of Ravalli County and ensure that area sportsmen have a voice in local resource management. The group continues to focus on conservation concerns that impact sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts. • Skalkaho Wildlife Preserve. A MT FWP preserve near Skalkaho Pass. fwp.mt.gov. An isolated, mountainous 23,000 acre wildlife preserve of dense spruce, subalpine fir and lush meadows.

The area is closed to hunting. Birds occupy the area in spring while elk are frequent autumn residents. Black bears are common year round. The preserve is closed to vehicles Oct. 15-Dec. 1. Mountain biking and cross-country skiing are allowed. • The Teller. 1288 Eastside Hwy., Corvallis, MT 59828. 961-3507. www.theteller.org. The Teller is a 1,200 acre non-profit wildlife preserve and conservation organization located in the heart of the Bitterroot Valley that serves as a model of land stewardship practices. The Teller mission is to inspire, educate, and demonstrate conservation by utilizing hunting, fishing, historic preservation, organic farming and land restoration practices. • Threemile Wildlife Management Area. A Montana Department of Fish Wildlife and Parks managed site nine miles east of Florence. The 6,059 acre site is accessible by two-wheel drive vehicles between May 15 and December 1 whenever roads are dry. Motorcycles and ATVs are prohibited at Threemile; mountain bikes are allowed. Threemile was established to provide winter range for elk along with compatible recreational opportunities, such as walk-in hunting. The site is favorable for bird watching. Threemile is closed Dec. 1-May 14. • USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. 1709 N. 1st St., Hamilton, MT 59840. 363-5010. NRCS works with landowners through conservation planning and assistance to benefit the soil, water, air, plants and animals for productive land and healthy ecosystems. The Farm Service Agency administers farm commodity, disaster and conservation programs and provides credit to producers unable to obtain commercial credit, especially beginning, minority and women farmers. The Bitter Root chapter was the third formed and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in a few years.
