064 LIAO Chi-chun, "Canal", 1974, oil on canvas, 72.5 x 91 cm, Ravenel Spring Auction 2006 Taipei, lot 064

Since its inception in 1999, Ravenel Auction has had local roots and global vision. Ravenel’s professional art investment consultancy service and outstanding auction record earned it a place in the top three leading auction companies on both sides of the strait. Established in Beijing in 2006, Ravenel was awarded “Art China, Annual Influence” and named of the most influential auction houses in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Since then, Ravenel has been more active in pioneering the business landscape. Since then, Ravenel has been aggressively expanded its business, holding the first Modern and Contemporary Art Auction in Hong Kong in 2008. A Hong Kong branch was established the following year to serve as the first Chinese auction company to enter Hong Kong, and a Shanghai office was established in 2012. The year 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of Ravenel’s founding. Ravenel has always had an eye for fine art, a team of professional judges, and a commitment to introduce Chinese and Western cultural works of art to collectors. In 2002, Ravenel held the "Art in China - Impressionism and Modern Art" exhibition, which introduced originals by Monnet, Renoir, Picardo, Chagall, and other masters. It later held the 2009 "Andy Warhol Night" exhibition, which introduced originals by Western masters including Damien Hirst, Jean Dubuffet, and Anish Kapoor. In the same year, Ravenel also cooperated with the Louvre to organize the "Le Louvre – Sculpture in Movement Exhibition", which toured in Asia. In addition, by observing the trends of the global art market over the long term and interacting closely with the art industry, Ravenal Art Group keeps up-to-date on the latest art market dynamics globally. In 2002, Ravenal launched Taiwan's first professional magazine dealing with art collections from an investment perspective, Art and Investing quarterly journal. In 2012, Ravenel launched the Ravenel Enterprise Journal for global VIP customers, which featured columns by an Art & Investing senior expert analyzing art markets and future trends. With its specialization in the collecting of 20th and 21st century Chinese art, Ravenal has set the standard for auctioning in the Chinese art area. In 2004, Chu The-chun's works achieved a record high when “Temps d’hiver” sold for NT$16.45 million. In 2006, Liao Chi-chun’s “Canal” sold for NT$80.85 million, a new global record for the artist. In 2007, Wang Huaiqing’s “Gold Stone” broke global auction records for a Wang painting at a final price of NT$87.96 million. In 2010, Ju Ming’s "Taichi Series – Single Whip" sold for NT$82.24 million, setting a new auction record for the artist and also becoming the highest-auctioning individual work by a contemporary Taiwanese sculptor. In 2011, Sanyu’s “Five Nudes” set the highest auction record for Chinese oil paintings with a final price of NT$475.25 million. In 2013, Shiy De-Jinn’s “Self-Portrait” sold for NT$22.8 million, the world auction record for Shiy De-jinn’s paintings. "Special Auction of Works by Shiy De-jinn – His Close Friend's Collection of 30 Years" was a record-setting 100% “white glove” sell-out, reinforcing the value of Taiwanese artists. In the same year, Tzu-Chi Yeh’s “ Mountain by Lao River, Hualian”" sold for NT$10.2 million, breaking the artist's previous auction record. In 2014, Zao Wu-ki’s “Plantes tortillées” set the record for highest-priced oil painting in Taiwan's auction history at a price of NT$243.36 million. In 2015, Chinese-American artist Walasse Ting's “Miss World” sold for NT$56.32 million, setting records at home and abroad, as well as setting a new record for the artist. Sanyu set another record in 2017, when “Vase of Chrysanthemums with Red Ground” sold for NT$282.56 billion, the highest-priced oil painting in Taiwan’s history and a 10-year high for the artist.

Besides Chinese artworks, Ravenel stands out from Asia art market. Lots of Japanese artworks were sold more than double price at Ravenel. In Spring 2017, Yayoi KUSANA "Amour pour Toujours" was sold three times of estimate price for NTD 5,040,000; furthermore, in Autumn auction, Ravenel sold Yayoi KUSANA "Key-Chan" twice of high estimate price, NTD 10,200,000. Additionally, Yoshitomo Nara "Nara Little Pilgrim (Night Walking)" sold 1.57 times of high estimate price, achieving NTD 6,600,000. It is worth mentioning that in recent years Walasse Ting’s abstract paintings have performed well at auction houses, seeing huge increases in price. With a sharp surge in 2018, the price of his large-scale abstract works has transferred to “Miss World”. In June 2019, Ravenal’s "Modern and Contemporary Art in Asia" will feature a rare large-scale work by Walasse Ting, "Pink Roses Biggling". This abstract masterpiece from 1973 is a vivid demonstration of Ting's talent and his passion for life. Exquisitely colorful apricot flowers sway and dance in the spring breeze. The profusion and vitality of the colors treats the viewer to a visual feast of the interplay between static and dynamic. The brushwork bursts with emotion, while blank space brings forth Oriental aesthetics. The elegant green background is like the earth from which all things sprout; peach-pink dots brighten the canvas like a rouge, filling the spring breeze with color. Just like the free-spirited apricot blossom, which blooms while other spring flowers are still hiding from the frost, the artist’s freehanded brushstrokes reveal lust for life and delicate tension. With his unique feeling of life and artistry, Walasse Ting gave the viewer more room for imagination and also opened a new chapter for Walasse Ting art collection at the same time. "Pink Roses Biggling", to be auctioned in the spring of 2019, is a key indicator of this trend.

Ravenel’s department of Chinese Work of Art was established in 2013. At the first edition of “The Imperial Treasures" auction, a Large Imperial Gilt-Bronze Archaistic Ritual Chime was sold at the price of NT$45,538,462. This first auction was largely affirmed by local collectors and was successfully sold at a turnover rate of 90%. In 2015, Ravenel launched “The Literati Sale” with curatorial concepts that blended ancient and modern 4

artefacts and masterpieces. With the literati's aesthetic, the multi-item structure presents a new auction experience for the vast number of collectors. Combining the spirit of the Tang and Song dynasties, “The Literati Sale” gathers the famous kiln porcelain from the South and the North during the Song and Yuan Dynasties. In the autumn auction of 2017, a Southern Song Longquan Celadon Tripod Censor, as a rare treasure with outstanding background, was sold for NT$2,880,000. In additional, another representative lot of Song Ding Black-Glazed Tea Bowl

was

especially precious compared to the large number of white Ding ware, and was eventually purchased by a collector at NT$3,120,000. As a well-known Asian auction house with a history of 20 years, Ravenel is honored to bring together art lovers from all walks of life to meet in 2019 to witness the 5

past and to to march towards the future. "The Literati Sales" will adhere to the theme of beauty and precision, and hopes to continue to bring more fun and meaning to collectors.

Looking back to the past 20 years of establishment of Ravenel, one of the major milestones is undoubtedly the creation of a new category, the Fine Chinese Paintings. This category was previously included as part of the Literati Sale. In Spring 2018, the first Chinese Paintings auction was launched, followed by two curated auctions in Autumn. In the past two years, Chinese Paintings Sale has created more than NT$150 million, showing Ravenel’s keen commitment to meeting new challenges and creating new achievements. Fine Chinese Paintings Department was founded during a tumultuous period in the Chinese Paintings market. Compared with the market performance in 2017, the growth rate of China's overall calligraphy market slowed down significantly in 2018. Faced with a shrinking market, Ravenel strategically capitalized on Taiwan's geographical advantage. Based on the principle of "Quality over Quantity", the artistic and collectible value of the auctioned lots was enhanced to meet the needs of collectors and to cater to their refined taste in arts and cultural heritage. Works came from top Chinese Painting masters, including Zhang Da-Chien, Pu Hsin-Yu, Huang Chun-Pi, Taiwan's great academics Chiang Chao-Shen, Yu Youren, Tai Jingnong, and Au Ho-Nien, Lee Yih-Hong, and Yu Chung-Lin, who were well-acclaimed ink masters of combining Chinese and Western artistic styles. Fine Chinese Paintings Department manager Masa Chen expresses gratitude to our collectors for their unanimous support, “Following our previous success, we are committed to pursue greater goals in upcoming sales, bringing to collectors a continuous supply of unique ink art pieces.”

Andy

Lonesome Cowboy),

digging in his heels and running the art circuits in America and Europe for 20, 30 years, driven by the dream of letting the world see the greatness and ambition of Japan. At the same time he established the Modern Kano School and held over 20 Geisai festivals, as well as establishing the KaiKai Kiki Studio and Gallery, an art complex supporting and cooperating with young artists. “Takashi Murakami” is run as a global brand. He also pushed the concept of Superflat in the Western art world, which was a new concept that completely changed the common perception of Japanese art.

Considered one of the most active and powerful modern Japanese artists, he has held solo exhibitions at prestigious international galleries including Galerie Perrotin, Gagosian Gallery and Plum & Poe. Additionally he has exhibited in major museums around the world including a 2010 retrospective at Château de Versailles in France, “500 Arhats” at Mori Art Museum in 2015, and has collections held at MoMA and other museums around the world, a testament to his spirit and vigorous ambition.

OPENING THE DOORS ON THE PAST REVEALS THE FUTURE

Takashi Murakami was born on February 1st, 1962 in Tokyo, Japan. Both parents were from Kyushu, and all his family

members were artistically gifted. His younger brother Yuji later became a prestigious Japanese painter. His father Fukujuro Murakami joined the self-defense force during World War II. After the war, for the sake of the family, he moved to Tokyo and took on the role of taxi driver to support the family while drawing and sculpting in the evenings, finally had a chance to fulfill his wish. Itsuko, the mother, was a homemaker. Under her strict tiger parenting, from the age of 8 or 9 Murakami was brought to many art exhibitions and forced to write reviews and reflections. Despite their destitute financials, with the heavy emphasis on art placed by his father and mother, as well as support from relatives Murakami was able to exhibit and draw until the age of 28. The road of illustration tutelage was a bumpy one. Forcing himself to create art that would make money, make a name for himself and create a legacy that would last even after death, like the great artist Hokusai. Even til the age of 36, he was still economically unviable, begging for expired bento from supermarkets to get by. Like many children, Murakami loved watching cartoons as a child. Originally he dreamed of becoming an anime artist when he grew up. He held the works of director Hayao Miyazaki as his goal, and the drawings of the artist Koki Tanaka for their technique and dynamic. The animation master Tezuka Osamu was another subject of his admiration. However, Murakami knew that illustration itself was not enough. In order to improve his technique he hoped to study at art school. After 2 years of taking and retaking exams, he was accepted to Tokyo University of the Arts and studied the creation of Nihonga, Japanese painting. Nihonga is an amalgamation of traditional Japanese subjects and European style. In 1986 in his fourth year he endured 5 months of 15 hour work days working day and night on his graduation piece “Side Self Portrait” acquiring tendonitis in his right hand through his exertions. He seriously thought he would graduate in first place but unfortunately garnered only fourth. In the second year of his masters program he used an even more complicated method to create his paintings and again endured tendonitis. Still, he garnered only second place, pushing him to tears. At 28 he blew a three million yen award on supplies but was again thwarted. In 1993 he finally attained a PhD in Nihonga, becoming the student to achieve a PhD in art.

In 1994 he received the ACC scholarship from the Rockefeller foundation and went to the PS1 International Studio for one year. Once, as he was walking in the street, he saw a group of mice fighting for food -- actually, it was most advantageous to be a fat mouse in order to push aside the other mice and get the food. A previously unsure Murakami suddenly realized how to survive as an artist in this world. First, he had to make a name for himself in New York, because only by being successful could he make money. He couldn’t use the Westernderived Nihonga to compete in the world, he had to use the strongest and more unique characteristic of Japan, leading him to think of anime and manga, beloved by the culture of otaku. He viewed himself as a translator, a bridge, repackaging Japanese culture and turning it into something that people of the world could easily understand and not something loaded down with details or over complicated with nuance. Inspired by the the Disney icon Mickey Mouse, the adorable character “Mr. DOB”, who symbolizes self-projection, was born. From here this visual became Murakami’s logo and signature. DOB comes from a Japanese dialect meaning ‘why’? Through continual self-examination the road to artistic creation is discovered.

THE THREE WEAPONS OF JAPANESE CULTURE: SUPERFLAT, NURI-E, AND LITTLE BOY

In 1996, Murakami participated in the 2nd Queensland Asia-Pacific Triennial. He exhibited “Mr. DOB” for the first time,

using it as a platform to debut his “Superflat” theory. He stated “In the future, our society, style, art, and culture, will be like Japan, they will become two-dimensional [...] today, Japanese games and cartoons all exemplify this quality, and these products hold enormous weight in our global culture.” Murakami delved deep into Japanese art history, discovering that pictures from Tang Dynasty China and Korea exhibited this flat style, which is different from Chinese multi-point viewpoint style and Western onepoint perspective. He even went so far as to theorize that all of Japan was “Superflat”. After losing World War II, an inferiority complex prevailed in defeated countries. Major sources of societal pressure including the economic bubble and sarin gas incident of the 1980’s and 1990’s pushed the depressed people to turn to the cute and two dimensional cartoons to heal their hearts. Murakami’s manifesto contested Western art history; cartoon art gradually became an important art movement in the global arena. In 2001 he planned an Ultra-Flat museum tour in America. The first stop was the MoCA in Los Angeles. On the first day over 8000 people showed up, breaking the record for visitors in a day for a single exhibition. Through communicating culture, Murakami exhibited the attraction of Japan. Repetitive smiling flowers and images upon a background of the cultural image of a sun and a tribute to pop art idol Andy Warhol. The press went wild. New York Times called Murakami the Leader of Neo-Pop -“Superflat” may displace pop art.

38

Following “Superflat", in 2003, Murakami proposed the concept of "Kinderid" (Kawaii, 2003) and "Little Boy" (2005) through exhibition planning. Takashi Murakami stated: "The commonality of modern Japanese society is "childlike" and "cute". "The aesthetic experience of anime is unique. It will impress your unspoken childlike heart and arouse your memories of childhood." Post-war trauma has caused Japanese society to have a long-lasting mentality. “Little Boy” exists in their inner worlds, unwilling to be an adult to face the cruel outer world, instead, they would rather be otaku, hiding in their own little universe, observing the world with cold eyes. “Little Boy’ also invokes the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The mushroom cloud from the explosion and skull appear often in his words - behind the cuteness there is darkness and death.

EROTIC LIFE-SIZE DOLLS, CUTE MONSTER STATUES

In the 90’s, in order to attend an exhibition in America Murakami collaborated with the toy company Kaiyodo and

expended quite a bit of energy to create the sexy large-breasted female figure “Miss Ko²”. “Miss Ko²” was Murakami’s first doll figure, exhibiting his originality. At the time figurines were becoming a trend as well. He continued on, following with “Hiropon”, the child-faced giant figure (huge breasted woman) and the sexy Dragonball inspired “My Lonesome Cowboy”. These two lifesized naked figurines, entwined in breast milk and seminal fluid, infuriated both the Japanese art world and the otaku who were upset at his wanton selling out of their culture. However, “Hiropon” was well received in the U.S. and sold soon after publication. “My Lonesome Cowboy” debuted in Los Angeles on the West Bank with limited editions immediately sold out. Murakami is full of vigor and continues to create three-dimensional works in addition to painting, including Mr. Pointy, Revered Double Helix, Panda, Inochi, Kaikai and Kiki, Flower Matango, Doraemon and other strange and monstrous creations. To be a creative in the Euro-American market the artist’s subjectivity must be a part of the creative process. Murakami compiled and returned to Japanese culture. The most well-known aspects of Japanese art are “cute” and “otaku”. Through Murakami these two identities found audience on the pedestals of Western museums. Considering the art figurines on modern day auction stands, Murakami is without a doubt a leader. In 1997 he planted the seeds of this concept and also created the example cooperation between toy-maker and fine artists. In 1997 there were three versions of Miss Ko² which in 2003 commanded 567,500 US dollars at Christie’s in New York. In 2010 Philips of New York auctioned a piece for 6.8 million US dollars, and in 2010 in Hong Kong brought in nearly 3 million US dollars. Furthermore, the highest priced work by Murakami is currently the lifesize “My Lonesome Cowboy” created in 1998, which sold for 15.16 million US dollars (nearly 500 million NTD), bought by Larry Gagosian, owner of the powerful Gagosian gallery. As of March 2013, 3-dimensional works comprised half of Murakami’s top 20 works, showing that doll art plays a very important role in his creative process.

MODERN EDO FREAKSHOW: THE MONSTER PAINTING AND 500 ARHATS

Aside from cute style, Murakami continually searches for

roots within traditional culture, carrying on geek style of Edo art, and integrates the decorative gold leaf of the Rinpai and Kano schools, and even later era traditional illustration

ukiyo-e as sources of inspiration. In 2009, he started a dialogue on Japanese with Nobuo Tsuji, a famous art historian on subject such as “Dragon in Clouds”. Feeling the

damage caused by the 311 earthquake as well as the shortness of life brought on by his father’s passing, Murakami created a series of paintings featuring religious redemption and ukiyo-e. His “500 Arhats” was displayed in 2012 in Duha, Qatar, and again in 2015, at the Mori Art Museum to critical acclaim. The works were inspired by the Kano Masters, exploring the limits of life and the infinity of the universe. The “500 Arhats” is presented in four parts, named in the manner of traditional Chinese mythology: Blue Dragon, White Tiger, Red Bird, and Black Turtle. The 500 Arhats are presented in different ways, and the entire painting spans 100 meters -- the longest painting in the world. Murakami exhibited his leadership and charm, working with 200 students from the Academy of Fine Arts to complete the project. He firmly believes that the more people that participates, the greater the word will be. In the spring of 2019, The GYATEI² Exhibition was held at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, which drew from incantations used in Buddhist scripture that have the meaning of rebirth. As he has aged Murakami’s works has likewise broadened in scope. No wonder! Since meeting Emmanuel Perrotin in 1993 the two have continued to collaborate on exhibitions since 1995, including even an interdisciplinary collaboration with Louis Vuitton.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION WITH LV BOUTIQUE AND STAYING RELATIVE

In 2003 Murakami had a chance to attend the Venice Biennale due to Galerie Perrotin. Louis Vuitton is a sponsor of the Venice Biennale, which

in turn became an opportunity for collaboration. In 2003 despite the economic downturn throughout all of Europe, Vuitton was the only brand turning a profit. The Murakami Monogram, or Murakami Totem, replete with panda, sakura, and camouflage patterns, accounted for over 10% of sales. The decorative packaging of Murakami and designer Marc Jacob drove celebrity ladies crazy, and the cooperation between them has continued for 12 years. Aside from Louis Vuitton, the business-minded Murakami has also collaborated with Shu Uemura Cosmetics, Co. Ltd, as well as branded with Vans, Kawakubo, Visvim, Off-White, Uniqlo, and the sake label NEXT5, as well as musicians including Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Drake etc. In 2014 he co-created the film trilogy Jellyfish Eyes with Pharrell Williams, a black comedy set against the backdrop of the 311 earthquake. The film features dark cartoons, high-profile sex, and exploratory networks. Exuberant combat power, timely -- despite that he is nearing 60 years of age, the work remains very relevant.

40

THE COMPLICATED SLASHIE LIFE OF THE GODFATHER OF ART

Murakami’s brilliant strategy, caused great controversy regarding his unmasked capitalistic tendency, however he has spared no effort in

grooming succeeding generations. Since 2002 Geisai has been held every year, selecting the best of new blood, including Hiroyuki Matsuura and Ayako Rokkaku, both of whom came out of Geisai. In order to put on this activity Murakami has taken on a million Japanese yuan in debt. Geisai has been held 20 times, ended in 2014; in 2009 it even expanded to Taiwan. If he didn’t truly have enthusiasm and concern, then it would be unnecessary to hold such an artistic competition and establish this studio, to search for collaborators, or have representative artists for KaiKai Kiki. He hopes to create a modern Kano, to find way for Japanese contemporary art. He is an artist, and also a gallery owner; as an art dealer he is a strict boss because only with anger can good art be created. His standards for auditing are quite clear: how to create value, how to generate high prices in the resale market, only when the art inspires the wealthy who are willing to spend money on it, will it be considered successful. In the New York art market his works command millions of dollars, even tens of millions. In 2018 at least 26 million US dollars were traded, about half in New York, followed by London. He has a lot of room for growth in Asia. Over the years as he has been tirelessly promoting his ideas, Murakami and his art partners communicate, uncovering the hidden potential of artists. He has published at least 3 books, The Art Entrepreneurship Theory (2007), Art Combat Theory (2010) and Creativity (2014). These works are like personal biographies, analyzing the artistic territory he has so painfully carved out. In addition to opening art galleries, running cafes and bars, and creating and selling art wares, Murakami is also a collector. As a student he began to hoard photographs and prints. His first piece of collected art was by the German artist Horst Janssen, “Self Portrait with Skull”. He worked hard making and saving money, paying for the piece in installments. He has collected at least a thousand pieces of art so far, from Andy Warhol to David Shrigley’s “Life Model”; from the ink paintings of 18th century Japanese artist Soga Shohaku to the acclaimed “Merkaba” by German artist Anselm Kiefer, exhibiting his characteristic enthusiasm and persistence. The eccentric and multi-variant lifestyle of artist Takashi Murakami serves as an example for future generations to aspire to.

FROM HALLUCINATION TO AVANT-GARDE

YAYOI KUSAMA'S EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Amour pour Toujours (a set of 10), Yayoi Kusama, 2000, Screenprint, 28/60 38 x 45.5 cm (each), Ravenel Spring Auction 2017 Taipei

[ THE ARTIST ]

(Price Index)

With her fiery red wig, exaggerated eye makeup, and self-designed polkadotted clothes, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is both an unforgettable character and a national treasure. Kusama’s unique artistic language is the result of her extraordinary life. Hailing from the traditional and restrained culture of Japan, Kusama went on to live in the U.S. where she produced series of avant-garde works that appear rebellious and highly controversial. From the 1960s to the 1970s, her work was completely alien to Japanese art; nonetheless, she is now considered to be the greatest living artist in Japan. Kusama has multiple identities. She is not only a painter and sculptor, but also a performance artist, fashion designer, poet, and novelist. Suffering from hallucinations, she is also a survivor of mental illness. Kusama’s life was not easy. She was born on March 22, 1929, in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, to a wealthy merchant family with business and political backgrounds. Her mother's family was upper-class and operated a plant nursery and seed farm. Her father was a womanizer who had many affairs. Her mother, a strong character, was furious about these problems in her family, but was powerless to change them. Yayoi Kusama lived her childhood and adolescence under the shadow of her mother’s strict control - a shadow that haunted her for her entire life. Her father's philandering made her afraid of men and extremely aversive toward sex. Although virtually asexual herself, Kusama was an outspoken supporter of homosexuality and sexual liberation.

46

Kusama’s artistic talent was apparent from childhood. During her youth in Japan, she studied nihonga painting, pastel, and other traditional Japanese arts. Inspired by American artist Georgia O' Keeffe, Kusama went to New York in 1957 to experience creative freedom. The works she produced in the U.S. are diverse, including paintings, soft sculpture, performance art, installation, film, and other media. Her artistic styles and philosophies were similarly varied, including Popular Art, Feminism, Surrealism, Art Brut, Abstract Expressionism, and Happening, among others. Kusama’s works show personal spirituality and autobiographical elements. As she works, she connects to the mysterious world through spontaneous and unexpected urges, inner physical forces, and subconscious thoughts, creating her own expansive aesthetic universe. Her boundless passion for painting and her nearly religious reverence for art sustains her in her long battle against mental illness. Kusama’s primary artistic inspiration and aesthetic element is the polka dot, which was also an important symbol of the hippie era. Kusama was active in the international art scene in the 1960s, during the hippie era of sexual liberation and the anti-war movement. Known at the time as "Queen of the Dots", "Queen of the Hippies" or "Queen of the Avant-Garde", Kusama’s was almost as famous and influential as pop art icon Andy Warhol. The polka dot motif that appeared again and again in Kusama’s works also influenced the younger generation of contemporary artists including Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami. The pumpkin and flower motif is another life-long love of Kusama’s, hearkening back to the plants and seedlings in her family’s nursery. When she was 17 or 18, she made a Japanese traditional painting of several rows of pumpkins which won praise and awards. Explaining why she loves the pumpkin so much, she says it has a lovely shape, and its fat round belly gives her a deep sense of security. From 1967 to the early 1970s, Kusama became an environmental sculptor combining her work with "surprise" performance, creating works such as painting dots on naked human performers. To Kusama, by constantly painting the things that she feared and turning them into repetitive images that slowly envelops oneself, one can dissolve the self and the environment and return to the natural state of the universe. After living in New York for 17 years, Kusama returned to Japan in 1973 to settle down. In 1975 she began to make collages, and in 1979 began creating prints, then devoted herself to writing. In 1983, her novel The Hustler’s Grotto of Christopher Street won the Yasei Jidai Magazine 10th Literary Award for New Writers. Her life was full of incredible happenings. A few years after returning to Japan, she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital, but still maintained her routine of painting every day in the studio opposite the hospital, immersing herself in creation for at least eight hours a day. To this day, she still receives constant invitations to international exhibitions. Yayoi Kusama's popularity has steadily increased in the auction market since 2000. According to data provided by Artprice, a French art-market company, Yayoi Kusama’s Price Index has shown an upward trend since 2011. Rising prices have made it clear that collectors of Yayoi Kusama's early works can enjoy the value appreciation. In particular, limited-edition prints are highly sought-after, with over 2,500 transactions between 2000 and 2019. At an auction in London in January, the complete portfolio of ten screenprints Amour pour toujours sold for a record NT$8.1 million (about 200,000 pounds), nearly three times the estimated price, setting a record high for the artist's printwork.

THE DECISIVE MOMENT 等待,追求瞬間極致的永恆 Text/范國晃、唐維怡Eva Tang Photo/Ravenel International Art Group、Leica Store Taipei

48

Rag &

The Macallan Masters of Photography Series Annie Leibovitz Edition

FIFTY-TWO WEEKS OF TEMPERING, A CLASSIC THAT LASTS FOREVER

Mobile phones have brought the modern photo shooting to a

new era. While smart phones can take, browse and upload photos to social media at ease, it has becoming the mainstream of photography, replacing the old-fashioned cameras. However, there are still some people pursuing the ultra-image filming and, at the same time, there are another group of people responding to the needs. The Leica earns the nickname “the Rolls Royce of cameras” by its focus on the most meticulous detail to provide the ultimate photo-shooting experience for photography geeks. Leica plays a divine role in cameras. It represents not only the superb German mechanism and optics, but also the entire history of

Leica M9-P “Edition Hermès”

camera craftsmanship. Leica even changed the history of photography, and laid the foundation of current mainstream photography. The legend began in 1914, while Oskar Barnack (1879-1936), one of Leica’s technicians, invented the first ever camera that uses 35mm (24x36mm) films. Cameras before that were extremely bulky and used giant and brittle glass films, which restricted the themes of photography to stationary scenes and objects. The invention of the 35mm film makes cameras portable. Photographers can use Leica 35mm to capture the exact moments. The new era of photography thus began. . Henri Cartier-Bresson (19082004), one of the greatest photographers of 20th century, was known for using only one camera, a Leica rangefinder, and one lens, a 50mm, for almost all of his life’s work. With its lightweight and excellent durability, the Leica is used by military and war correspondents during World War II. Ernest Miller Hemingway (18991961) was also a fan of Leica cameras.

However, Leica’s sublime position comes not only from its innovation and technology, but its precision and rigorous attitude. It takes fifty-two weeks to craft a Leica lens from the making formulas of different types of lenses, firing and cooling manually with years of experience, cutting and polishing of glass, crafting and electroplating lens tube before finally assembled by hands. This manufacturing process, although time-consuming, has been followed for one hundred years and is the key to Leica’s highquality lenses with nearly perfect light transmittance and refractive index. With Leica’s dedication toward details, old lenses from seventy or even eighty years ago still perform amazingly outstanding today. Every innovation of Leica cameras redefines photography.

In 1954, the birth of Leica’s first M-series mechanical camera, M3, brought another revolution. Its bayonet mount makes it easier and more convenient to switch lenses. Its framing chart is merged into the viewing window with automatic parallax correction. New features include quick release lever, new shutter dial, film number display, auto zero, synchronized flash, and self-timer. The camera is precisely assembled with more than 1348 metallic components that makes it durable after decades of usage under harsh climates, and has become photographers’ most credible partner. The design of Leica M-series is highly admired that they soon became dream collection of photographers. One of the earliest built M3 model received a hammer price of nine-hundred thousand Euros at WestLicht Photographica auction in 2012. A 1956 LEICAVIT MP (M Perfect) with fast filming device was sold for 2.12 million HKD at L&H Autumn Auction in 2015. Leica’s M-series is an absolute classic, majestic collection among all

Photographers adore Leica, and some of them even believe that each Leica camera has its own spirit that will bring its owner to an unseen decisive moment. That is why some people use only one Leica camera for their entire professional lives. Leica has an unreplaceable historical position for camera collectors. Each Leica camera has a distinct serial number, and each model has earned themselves spectacular positions in the history of photography. Other than that, Leica also releases limited editions on brand anniversaries, such as the 100th anniversary Leica M edition in 2014. They also raise crossindustry cooperation with big brands such as Leica M9-P Hermès Edition in 2012 and the neon-green-painted Leica M-Monochrom special “Stealth Edition” designed by the co-founder of the fashion brand Rag & Bone, Marcus Wainwright. Every Leica camera is a dream collectables for Leica fans all over the world.

with a special angle before being placed under natural sun and rain for more than two years. The long air-drying process eases the tannins and odor. Then the wooden plates are taken to the factories for shaping with water and fire. The hard-working carpenters use mild fire to bend the wooden plates, and bring a charming chocolate and nutty aroma to the wood. The quality of the oak barrels is the foundation of the Macallan’s definition of whisky. In 2009, the Macallan decided to film the process for their customers, and that was the birth of the Macallan Masters of Photography series. The Macallan’s first Master of Photography was directed by Scottish photographer Rankin. He used polaroid and captured a thousand moments of the Macallan’s distillery and superb craftsmanship. The Macallan’s next Master of Photography was featured by Scottish legendary photographer Albert Watson. He used black and white photos of Oaks forest in northern Spain, the traditional barrel factory of Jerez, the hometown of Shirley, and the Macallan’s iconic Easter Elchies house to create The Macallan’s Great Adventure. The third imagery set of the series was directed by the most influential female photographer of the 21st century, Annie Leibovitz. She uses different camera angles to present the different impressions of each oak barrel. The forth photo set of the series was directed by Elliott Erwitt, who is best known for his ability of capturing “The Decisive Moment”. He used his sensitive camera to show the world the land where splendid whisky is made by capturing the stunning scenery and culture of Scotland. The fifth, the sixth, the seventh… etc. The journey of Oak goes on after hundreds of years under the lenses of photograph masters.

In 2016, the Englandbased Daily Mail published a report, full of British-style caricature but also lingered with admiration. The narrative is about how a self-proclaimed « ordinary woman » walked somewhat blatantly into the boutique of Hermès in London, with the intention to buy a Birkin or a Kelly, and received a polite yet fully expected decline by the sales assistant. In the same article, other women with the same ambition have explained their passing to the author. It was as if every customer has heard the rumors of a secret VIP waiting list, but still budging in to try her hand; and although the rarity of these precious objets essentially made them meet with a rejection, the women are speaking of these experiences with glee. As the author, she was of course rather enjoyed the delicate reception service, but undoubtedly disapointed by the refusal of her wish to order a bag with specifications. According to Hermès toward the medias, it is the director of each boutique who makes the decision of the orders for the next season. The order would be fulfilled 6-12 months later. Hermès holds dear the tradition of the artisan making his or her’s own craft without division of work, and therefore every bag is unique or even perculiar in it’s own right. However, it’s quite a pity that the author’s passion did not support her to ask a bit further. As the matter of fact, there IS an atelier established solely for customization purposes. Just on the floors of the famous flagship boutique on the Rue Faubourg Saint Honoré. So much peculiar as these series of Hermès’ bags, ego-centric celebrities around the world can only grasp on every opportunities to eventually express themselves with these luxuries. The enthusiasts in the Kardashian family continuously exhibit their Hermès bags with all kinds of modifications or sketches; Lady Gaga invited her japanese « little monsters » to sign with her on a white Birkins; Francesca Eastwood, daughter of Clint Eastwood, even gave her crocodile skin Birkin worthy of $100,000 to be destroyed by her boyfriend in a performance of art.

Fine Chinese Paintings Ravenel’s Chinese painting and calligraphy section are pleased to present two special auctions. Among them, a total of more than 80 pieces of modern calligraphy and paintings were produced from the “Three Crossers of the Sea” Zhang Daqian, Pu Hsinyu, and Huang Chun-Pi, as well as famous Taiwanese ink masterpieces. The highlight of this auction’s “Refined Brushwork: Fine Chinese Paintings” include Peonies – the collaborated work by Zhang Daqian and Pu Hsinyu. The pale ink sketch depicts a natural blooming elegance, while the lightly inked butterfly in the upper left corner seems to come to life, fluttering with the connotation of beckoning wealth. The work was previously owned by Taiwanese senior art and literature reporter Zhang Li-Geng. The painting confirms the friendship between the two masters and Zhang, who sends his blessing. This auction also includes Zhu Qizhan’s Landscape under Misty Rain , Pu Hsinyu

Horses in the Forest , and Huang Chun-Pi’s Tiers of Cloudy Peaks . All sources are sequenced and well-documented, adding to the collection value of the paintings.

For the first time this year, “Paintings and Calligraphy by Chiang ChaoShen, Lee Yih-Hong, and Zhou Cheng” auction features selected works by Chiang Chao-Shen, Lee Yih-Hong, and Zhou Cheng, many of which are appearing in an art auction for the first time and have come from important Taiwanese painting and calligraphy collectors. Key lots include Ciang Chao-Shen's Landscape in

Four Seasons and Autumn Scenery , as well as Lee Yih-Hong’s Scholars along the River.
