Once a raven,

A GRAD 2014 POEM BY cubone & hawaiian Stand Proud Late nights, early mornings, I know we can all say, We’ve felt that feeling in our gut When you realize it’s another school day. It's boring and tiresome, but Also fun in many ways The lessons we learn here are irreplaceable With experiences to make us more capable, For the long journey ahead of us As dreadful as it seems, continue we must Yesterday we said liar, liar, pants on fire Today we will inspire Graduation, distant as it had once appeared Fast forward, the end is drawing near Suddenly faced with endless decisions The past is but a blur in my vision It seemed like it was just yesterday when we first came At Sea to Sky, around a campfire flame In the future our paths will cross again Back to when we first began We must show the world how much we’ve grown Through discovering the unknown But we will always soar together As our memories will always be forever -1- | Raven Review Summer 2014

always a raven.

Summer Paradise: Maui, Hawaii By Lequanta As the school year winds down, the heads of many students are stuck in the clouds already. A school year is always full of surprises and stresses, and it`s no surprise many of us who have successfully made it through the gauntlet are already at the front office booking one way trips to summer paradise. In this edition of travel, I`ll show you around one of the serene islands of the classic summer retreat- Maui, Hawaii.

One thing many travelers almost immediately find is that it is cheaper to fly from the US than Canada. Now, how long should one stay in Maui? For me, an average sightseer, one week sufficed. It is worth mentioning that much of the fun in Hawaii comes from tours and water activities, so if you plan to play around a lot, book a longer trip. Assuming you gobbled up a great deal and drove down to the States for departureyou`ll probably find yourself on a plane (Allegiant Airlines most likely), heading to the "Valley Isle". For most, the airport you should be arriving at is an aged, charming, airport at Kahului, a city with lots of malls and shops. Almost immediately after getting off the plane, one notices the unique, glowing, humid heat of the Hawaiian Islands.

It is a great idea to rent a car beforehand. Maui is a fairly small island, and so one can explore a good quarter of the island in a day. A car's air-conditioning also helps for when you just need to duck in and escape from the heat outside! A warning beforehand: the roads and infrastructure in Maui can be very challenging at times. On the road to Hana, a little tourist town with great beaches, the road snakes through ten thousand valleys with sudden turns, where many times, you can't even see the car approaching behind the corner ahead. That is not to take away from the beautiful scenery The winding road to Hana. of Maui, with exotic waterfalls and roadside coconut milk vendors- but one should allot an entire day for the slow and bumbling trip to Hana. -3- | Raven Review Summer 2014

The Molokini Crater, a nearby island where snorkeling boats usually dock for great views of coral reefs and fish.

If you haven't already, pick up a tourist guide/map at your hotel. You'll need it. If possible, inquire about tours at the information station. There is an abundance of activities suitable for the whole family. For the average tourist, there are great snorkeling tours exploring the nearby small islands. The tour begins at a port and moves onto a well-equipped cruiser. Before long, you're off to see vivid coral reefs, mesmerizing schools of exotic fish, and sea turtles who float alongside. This activity is a must-do for people of all ages—one isn't required to know how to swim as floatation devices are provided. I highly recommend all tourists to prepare themselves before the boat trip though, as the boats are small and the seas can be extremely choppy.

You're in Maui—it would be a shame if you left without feasting on the local food. Enter the luau, a feast that takes places over the course of an evening with hula-dancing entertainment. At the information booth, one will find a plethora of luau events hosted by a variety of hotels. Just pick one and eat, I say! Besides an enlightening and mystical performance designed to take you back to the times of the tribal warriors, Pig, freshly cooked in an underground oven. the usual centerpiece at a luau includes an entire pig that has been wrapped in banana leaves and buried underground with piping hot rocks for six hours. The pork is simply delectable. The meat is tender, with traces of pork fat, and it

melts in your mouth. In addition to this pig, a variety of grilled meats, salads, snacks, and drinks is also offered.

Popular attractions in Maui include water-based activities. These include surfing, jet-skiing, and parasailing- for the thrill seekers. Swimming and tanning in the hot sun are also great ways to take up a day on the warm Maui beaches. Perhaps it's the relaxed driving speed required on Maui roads. Perhaps it's the tropical Great views when parasailing! coconut trees offering cool shade from the sun. Or maybe it's the soothing crash of waves against the native volcanic rocks that provides you comfort. Whatever it is, and whatever you choose to do, just remember to slow down and enjoy the moments.

It's your summer paradise, right?

A Year to Obliterate: What Now for the Nucks?

ByThe hockeyguy

If you’re wondering why we are still writing a Canucks article, we understand. If you haven’t noticed, the Vancouver Canucks are not in the playoffs this year. In fact, they are miles (fine, kilometers if you’re really pro-metric) away from the 8th and final playoff berth in the west. The declining Canucks team finished 24th in the NHL (36-35-11), which gives them a sweet 6th overall draft pick. But in this situation, it also provided them with a batch full of question marks and embarrassment. It is safe to say that, the Canucks played their worst season in 6 years, dating back to the 2007-08 season. Who would of thought the 2013-14 season will turn into a complete disaster when the season started?

from fans towards Gillis because of the value given back for Luongo. When #FireGillis trended all over social media, and fans started chanting “fire Gillis” in games, that eventually led to his firing. The Aquilini ownership decided to bring back a legendary Canuck, Trevor Linden to occupy the vacant president position, which Gillis also held before his departure. Former Boston Bruins assistant GM Jim Benning, a former Canuck alumni and a great talent evaluator, filled the vacant GM position on May 23rd. He will have to clean up the mess that Gillis have left behind. Good luck, Benning.

Jim Benning, the new boss in town will have a busy off-season, trying to “re-tool” a miserable organization.

Remember this?

Defensive miscommunication results in

The Short Reign

this face-palming own-goal in a 4-1 loss to Montreal.

What’s Up With Management? Management will be a huge issue in the offseason. Mike Gillis, the former GM was under the pressure and fury of Canucks fans. The Roberto Luongo trade unleashed anger

Gillis wasn’t the only notable staff fired in the organization lately. Head coach John Tortorella and assistant Mike Sullivan was also relieved of their duties. Only assistant coach Glen Gulutzan was kept out of the firing. Linden’s firing meant that the players and management staff weren’t -6- | Raven Review Summer 2014

happy with Torts and Sully’s coaching style, which promoted shot-blocking, tiring minutes for top players, and less ice time towards depth players. Linden noticed the issue early heading into the offseason, and so Nucks’ fans waved goodbye to Torts. Offseason Game plan: New Coach In order for the Canucks to get back on track for the 2014-15 season, an efficient bench boss must be introduced. The Canucks are no strangers to the coaching market lately, with catchy names such as Willie Desjardins, John Stevens, and several others. With Pittsburgh’s recent collapse against the NY Rangers in the playoffs, the Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma was under examination by their management, and he was eventually fired on June 6th. Vancouver will be one of the front-runners for his services. Bylsma led the Pens to their Stanley Cup victory in 2009, and has lots of experience coaching the Eastern Conference powerhouse. His free-flowing coaching style is similar to Alain Vigneault, who led the Canucks to its dynasty years during his tenure in Vancity. However, many NHL teams without head a bench boss will definitely looking to hire him, so Benning and company need to act soon. Bylsma has my vote to coach the Nucks next year. Dan Bylsma (left) pictured.

Flourishing in Philly This year’s NHL Entry Draft will be held in Philadelphia, on June 27th. The Canucks currently hold the No. 6 overall pick, their highest pick since the 1999 draft when Daniel and Henrik Sedin went 2nd and 3rd overall. The Nucks will most likely go with a forward for this pick, since the lack of offensive depth this season killed their playoff chances. Some notable names that fit well could be: Jake Virtanen (Calgary, WHL) Brendan Perlini (Niagara, OHL) Lyon Draisaitl (Prince Albert, WHL). William Nylander (Sweden)

Virtanen is surely to be picked in the top-10 at this year’s draft, perhaps by the Canucks.

While Draisaitl is a long shot (since he is a potential top-3 pick), Perlini and Virtanen’s game are very dynamic and they both have good speed. Perlini plays well when he has the puck, similar to the Sedins’ puck-possession game. Virtanen has a scorer’s touch, and he can be an agitator, playing “in your face” hockey. Given that Virtanen is a local kid from Abbotsford, the Canucks will definitely keep an eye on this prospect. The class of 2014 might not be as flashy as previous draft classes, but the Canucks can certainly develop a top-notch NHL-caliber player out of the 6th pick.

-7- | Raven Review Summer 2014

Shake It Up? As for current roster changes, we first turn the focus to the soap opera of Ryan Kesler. Kesler was rumoured to be traded at the trade deadline, but no move was made by then GM Mike Gillis. If the new GM decides to trade him, the return can be humongous. The Anaheim Ducks and the Colorado Avalanche are hot contenders for Kelser’s services via trade.

Will Kesler eventually buy his one-way ticket out of Vancity?

Since the draft is coming up, the Nucks could ask for a 1st round pick, and an elite prospect. They can also move up their 6th pick on draft day, and trade for a higher pick. The Florida Panthers are rumoured to shop their 1st overall pick, and the Canucks might express interest. Goaltending will be a big issue as well, with Luongo out of town for good. Big free agent names such as Jonas Hiller, and Ryan Miller could be good options on July 1st if Lack is deemed not an elite starter. Benning and company can also trade for James Reimer’s negotiating rights from the Maple leafs, as he enters restricted free agency and he intends to leave Toronto.

Ryan Miller can give any team stability in the crease, given his NHL and international experience.

As for offense, the Ottawa Senators are open to shipping their captain, Jason Spezza out of the capital city. There are numerous Western Conference teams that have expressed interest to the Sens for Spezza, including the Vancouver Canucks. Jason Spezza could be a fantastic addition to the Canucks, but only if Kelser is surely on his way out and the cost to acquire him isn’t mile high. A top-six winger is also needed to fill the rugged offense, perhaps younger free agents like Matt Moulson, or Milan Michalek could help. Older and more experienced options could be David Legwand, or even Jarome Iginla. They can surely give the second line a much needed boost.

Legwand (pictured) might be fitting for short-term needs, but the Canucks are ultimately looking to get younger.

Have fun with your clubs and putts on the golf courses, Canucks. We’ll look forward to a better season next year?

Anime Review BY Twin d

h Mahouka Koukou Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School)

Genre: Magic, Fantasy Episodes: 13 Rating: 4.5/5 Summary:

In a future alternate world, set in the year 2095, magic exists in form of CAD's (Casting Assistant Device, which helps the caster of the spell cast it faster instead of chanting and traditional spellcasting) and has been used as an energy for a very long time. Magic schools have been set up, and the students in it are classified into 2 categories: Blooms and Weeds. The Blooms are made up out of people who have scored very high in the practical and written exam, and the Weeds are, the people who have scored very low on the practical and/or the written exam. The story centers around Tatsuya Shiba, a Weed because of his low score on his practical, despite scoring the highest mark in the written exam. His sister, Miyuki, is a Bloom. Despite being a Weed, Tatsuya has a unique ability to read a code for each and every spell starting to form on the CAD's before it is cast, despite the fact that each code has around 30,000 letters and numbers. This ability is very rare, and also very dangerous, because it could be taken advantage of in a wrong way. Soon, Tatsuya's ability starts to come into the spotlight and a battle to destroy the Bloom-Weed barrier is inevitably invoked. Positive: It's one of the most amazing anime I have ever watched. The action in it is just the right amount, and the plot doesn't stray from the story, unlike most of the anime I watch.

-11- | Raven Review Summer 2014

Negative: There are so many cliffhangers that I don't know what to do with my life. It's painful, because I have to wait JUST ANOTHER WEEK for the next episode to come out, urgh.

h Love Live: School Idol Festival Season 2

Genre: Music, Idol, Shoujo, Comedy Episodes: 13 Rating: 5/5 Summary:

As you can see, this is the second season of Love Live: School Idol Project. For those who haven't watched it (I'm sorry, but if you haven't watched it, it was one of THE anime in 2013, other than Attack on Titan, so it's really unlikely that you haven't watched it.) this anime is about a girl named Honoka Kousaka, who starts an idol group to get more students enrolled into her school, which would be closing, because of lack of student registration. This season, the plot is about a second Love Live being held in the year, which is strange because there is only 1 Love Live per year. This enables the Muse to enter in it again, after (*spoiler* they were disqualified because of Honoka having a super-cliche injury the day before of the competition. *spoiler*). Honoka, who is usually the super-cheerful girl that makes everyone participate in things that are fun, but they don't have the guts to, does not want to participate in the 2nd Love Live, to everyone's surprise. Later, Eri points out that it will be Nozumi, Niko and her last time being part of the Muse, because they will be graduation afterwards, because they're in their 3rd year of high school. (For those that don't know, elementary schools in Japan only go to Gr. 6 and their high schools are divided into middle school division and high school division, like the US, so Gr. 7, 8 and 9 are middle school and Gr. 10, 11, and 12 are high school.) This spurs Honoka on and she decides to participate in the Love Live, for the last time with the original Muse. From there on, they meet new rival and go against the top idol group in Japan, A-Rise.

-12- | Raven Review Summer 2014

Positive: Ummm... It's Love Live!? Is that a good reason? Well, if not, it's a good anime, showing perseverance, friendships and good rivalry, basically a perfect slice of life type of anime, with an idol twist. It's not too girly like Aikatsu, and the songs are good. Plus, we get to see more of A-rise in it! *insert random fan-girling* Negative: N/A

h Soredemo, Sekai wa Utsukushi (The World is Still Beautiful/Still World is Beautiful, if you search it up on Pinoy or AnimeFave)

Genre: Shoujo, Magic-ish Episodes: 12-24 Rating: 5/5 Summary:

This anime is about Nike, the 4th and youngest princess of the rain Kingdom, who travels to the Sun Kingdom to marry the King, who, despite many rumours of being an old, bald and perverted man, is a 15-year old child.

The Goddess Test by Wrackspurts Written by AimÊe Carter Positive: The mythology themes Negative: The minor characters were sort of confusing at times Rating: 4/5 Kate's mum is dying. in an attempt to grant her mum's last wish, Kate goes back to her hometown, Eden, Michigan. Once she gets there however she meets Henry. To picture Henry, just think of Nico Di Angelo from Percy Jackson. Later on, Henry claims to be Hades, who is Nico's dad, so I'm assuming that's why they sound very similar. Henry tells Kate that's he's the supreme lord of the Underworld, and he wants her to take a test. Not your average chemistry test that you didn't study for, but like the gods are testing you and it’s slightly more important than chemistry. Now Kate's not stupid, so she doesn't believe him, because if a guy came up to you and told you he was a god, chances are you aren't going to believe him. But after a series of events that must be kept secret, Kate sees Henry bring a dead girl back to life and suddenly this lord of the underworld thing seems slightly more plausible. Once she begins to believe that he is in fact who he claims to be, Henry offers to keep her dying mother alive, if she was to take the test. Kate agrees, because she just can't imagine a life without her mother. The test is to take place in Henry's giant mysterious mansion, and once she gets there all prepped for the tests, Henry decides to mention that all eleven girls who took the test before her were killed halfway through. Cue dramatic music. This was a pretty good book. It was a more romantic version of Percy Jackson. I really enjoyed figuring out who was the killer and who the gods in their human forms were. The myths were sort of mixed up at some point, but if you think about it, this is sort of Greek Mythology fan fiction; and people do all sorts of stuff with their fan fiction. Overall, this was definitely a good read. I would recommend it to people who liked Percy Jackson, because there is a lot of mythology in it, and also to people who enjoy books with a supernatural element.

Have a Great Summer! -16- | Raven Review Summer 2014

TV Review! By Wrackspurts

h Pushing Daisies

Created by Bryan Fuller Length: 2 seasons (22 episodes) Positive: Really funny. Also, the theme of the whole show isn't really that common in the television world. Also Lee Pace. Negative: The pilot episode is sort of boring, which stops some people from continuing. It gets better after though, but the beginning is definitely a weakness. Rating: 4/5

Oh there’s also swearing in it. So don’t watch this with your younger siblings. Pushing Daises is about the pie maker Ned. His days normally consist of baking pies and waking the dead, then killing them again. Wait that sounds wrong. Basically, Ned has a gift. If he touches a dead anything, he brings it back to life. But said, dead anything can only stay alive for one minute, before something else has to die in its place. Oh and if he touches the now alive thing again, they die permanently. Ned's also teamed up with Emerson Cod, a private detective. And they solve crimes together. Well not really solve. They sort of wake the murder victim, ask who killed them, then return them to the realm of the dead.

-17- | Raven Review Summer 2014

In Ned's childhood, he fell in love with the girl across the street. And the girl across the street, named Charlotte, or as she prefers, Chuck, fell in love with the boy across the street. Who was Ned by the way. After a series of unfortunate events that I probably shouldn't talk about because it's pretty important later on, Ned moves away and never sees Chuck again. Until years later, when he finds out she was killed on a cruise. So naturally, he and Emerson get assigned to find her killer. As always, Ned wakes his dead childhood lover. But the problem is he can't really kill her after a minute. Hence, Chuck remains alive and she joins the detective crew, and starts dating Ned again; which is easier said than done, because they can't really touch without killing her. So no hand holding, no kissing, not even high five! The show also includes other minor storylines, such as Olive Snook, the waitress at Ned's pie shop and her struggle to get over her unrequited romantic feelings for the pie maker, which included the occasional song. We also occasionally see Chuck's guardians and their attempt to move on from Chuck's "death. I really really liked this show. As mentioned before, the slightly boring pilot was sort of off putting, but I'm really glad I got past that and watched the rest of the show. One thing I really liked about the show was the humorous twist on detective stories. I also really liked the fact that the main character was shy and would avoid trouble at all costs, unlike most main characters that seem to just thrive in dangerous situations. As well, the narrator has a really nice voice. I would recommend this show for anyone looking for a laugh, or looking for something to pass time as they wait for their favorite show to get of hiatus.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2014 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scorpio: October 23-November 21- It seems that your summer may be boring than what you expect it to be. Why don’t you plan some stuff ahead of time with friends so you won’t get so bored later on? Go see a movie or hang out with friends at the mall! Sagittarius: November 22-December 21- You seem excited for summer, maybe a little too excited. Daydreaming or thinking of summer in general will affect your work habits in class. You'll have to stay on task to avoid being stuck in summer school. Now, THAT would be a complete waste of a great summer, don’t you think? Capricorn: December 22-January 19- Things might change for the better for you. Even if you may or may not have had a hectic year, all your hard work will pay off soon. So, end this year with something that is well worth earning. Aquarius: January 20-February 18- I have a feeling that you’ve got your face in front of a book, computer screen or phone screen. How about going outside for a change? Hang out with some friends or make new ones so you can stay in touch over the summer. 'Cause it sucks to be bored and alone on a beautiful summer day. Pisces: February 19-March 20- Your head's up in the clouds while you daydream about what movies you might watch, beaches you might go to or parties that you might attend over the summer. Well, you can’t just think about it just yet, though. You still have to finish all your hard work, so it can mean something in the future. Otherwise, you'll be waiting for the clock to tick by the hours until summer arrives.
